A morphological study was carried out on hairs of the Japanese monkey. The shapes in cross-section were circles or ellipses. The diameters of the hairs ranged from 13.5 to 92 μ, and the mean value in each monkey was between about 30 and 40 μ. The average value of the fibre index was approximately 90 in each monkey. The arrangement of the medulla was considered to be of the narrow medulla lattice type. Medullae were developed poorly or disappeared in hairs with a diameter of less than 30 μ. A correlation was noted between the hair thickness and presence of medulla: medullated hairs were thicker than non-medullated hairs. A tendency was found for thicker hairs to be of greater length. The hairs of the Japanese monkey could be divided broadly into two types: medullated hair and non-medullated hair. The medullated hairs could be regarded as guard hair-like hairs since they were thick and long, and the non-medullated hairs as underhair-like hairs since they were thin and short.

The thickness of hairs from Japanese monkeys was measured by enclosing the hairs on slide glasses with balsam. Nine monkeys were used for the study. Forty to 69 hairs from the back were examined per head. High correlations between the thickness of the enclosed hairs and the diameter of cross-sections were obtained in all monkeys. In the Japanese monkey, therefore, it is considered possible to utilize enclosed hairs for measuring the thickness without preparing cross-sections. Moreover, the medullae of which the air layers are strongly related to thermoregulation, were readily observed in the enclosed hairs.

The hair length of Japanese monkeys was investigated for a period of one year and the molting phenomenon was clarified. Nine monkeys were employed in the study. The molting of the Japanese monkey was found to be of a seasonal type and occurred once during the year. The molting continued for one to four months in each monkey. The hair of the Japanese monkeys was wholly replaced during the period from April to August. The hair length was thus short in summer, and long in winter. Hair replacement in pregnant females began after parturition and was generally later than that in other individuals. During molting, both new and old hairs could be observed simultaneously in the same region of the body. The hair replacement ended around summer when the hair became the shortest. The new hairs continued to grow after molting and became the longest towards autumn or winter. Thus, the summer coat and the winter coat were essentially the same in the Japanese monkey. Such annual changes in the hair of the Japanese monkey were considered to be suitable for the climate of Japan.

The hair length of Japanese monkeys was investigated. The hair of the Japanese monkey is long on the back and the lateral side of the upper arm and short on the back of the hand. There was variation in the length of hairs in the same region of the body. The distribution of hair length approximated to a normal curve and did not display any marked bias or skewness. The increase in length of hairs was remarkable from 0 to 1 year of age, and then continued at a constant rate. Sex differences in hair length were not so remarkable at any age.

The hair density of free-ranging Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata fuscata) living in three different areas was investigated. The Japanese monkeys had thicker hair than other macaques. The hair density in the Japanese monkeys varied with locality: the northern monkeys had thicker hair than the southern ones. The density did not vary markedly with age up to 3 years of age, but then decreased gradually up to adult age (≧7 years old). The remarkable growth of the trunk suggested that the total number of hairs increased with age, especially during the period as a juvenile.

Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) is used as an indicator of long-term stress or pathologies in humans and increasingly in animals. Although the main mechanism for the incorporation of cortisol into the hair shaft is by diffusion from blood, cortisol may also be incorporated from external sources by contamination of the hair surface. In farm animals under conventional husbandry conditions and trapped animals, contamination of hair with cortisol-containing body fluids, especially with urine, was shown to be a considerable confounding factor when studying HCCs. We recently found that cattle and pigs exhibit elevated HCCs in distal hair segments and assume that the incorporation of external cortisol is facilitated in these older hair segments. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of urine contamination on HCC in different hair segments of pigs and cattle, and to determine whether different cleaning protocols can prevent contamination effects. In an in vivo experiment in pigs (n = 18) and an in vitro experiment in cattle (n = 12), hairs were repeatedly contaminated with urine of the respective species and then shaved or cut in segments. Cortisol concentrations in hair segments were analysed by enzyme immunoassay after washing with isopropanol and extraction with methanol. Results were compared with HCCs in untreated hairs or hairs treated with water. Moreover, additional bovine hair samples contaminated with urine were subjected to two further cleaning procedures. Contamination with urine generally increased HCCs, and it was demonstrated for the first time that this effect is more pronounced in distal compared to proximal hair segments in both species. The immersion of bovine hair in vitro in water caused a washout of cortisol, which was also more pronounced in distal hair segments. In general, the different cleaning protocols for cattle hair did not prevent contamination effects, so we assume that external cortisol not only adheres but is incorporated into the hair shaft. Structural damage of older, distal hair segments may facilitate permeability of the hair matrix and diffusion of cortisol from and into aqueous solutions. Thus, the validity of HCC as a marker of stress is compromised in animals where soiling of hair with body fluids is a risk factor. Therefore, hair samples should be collected from clean body regions and, if possible, using proximal hair segments.

Measurements of various parts of the head and body and weighing the body were carried out on about 170 adult Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) and the results are noted with separate statistics for respective local groups. Intraspecific comparisons in the Japanese monkey and interspecific comparisons in macaques are discussed from the somatometrical point of view. Among macaques, the Japanese monkey has a comparatively large body, a very short tail, relatively wide biacromial and biiliac breadths, and markedly la ge intermembral and intercrural indices. The Japanese monkey itself shows various local variations. The most conspicuous difference is to be found between the so-called Yaku monkey living on Yaku islet (Yakushima), south of Kyushu, and the monkeys living in other parts of Japan, and, therefore, it is understandable that the Yaku monkey has been distinguished as a subspecies (M. f. yakui) of the Japanese monkey. The Yaku monkey has a somewhat small body, a relatively large head, wide hips, and slender hands and feet.

Axial patterning is a recurrent theme during embryonic development. To elucidate its fundamental principles, the hair follicle is an attractive model due to its easy accessibility and dispensability. Hair follicle asymmetry is evident from its angling and the localization of associated structures. However, axial patterning is not restricted to the follicle itself but also generates rotational hair shaft asymmetry which, for zigzag hairs, generates 3-4 bends that alternately point into opposite directions. Here we show by analyzing mutant and transgenic mice that WNT and ectodysplasin signaling are involved in the control of the molecular and morphological asymmetry of the follicle and the associated hair shaft, respectively. Asymmetry is affected by polarized WNT and ectodysplasin signaling in mature hair follicles. When endogenous signaling is impaired, molecular asymmetry is lost and mice no longer form zigzag hairs. Both signaling pathways affect the polarized expression of Shh which likely functions as a directional reference for hair shaft production in all follicles. We propose that this regulatory pathway also establishes follicular asymmetry during morphogenesis. Moreover, the identified molecular hierarchy offers a model for the periodic patterning of zigzag hairs mechanistically similar to mesodermal segmentation.

We examined the exact shapes of the thread-like wind-receptor hairs in the cricket and cockroach. The diameters of hairs at various distances from the hair tip as measured by scanning electron microscopy revealed unexpected hair shapes. We had expected, a priori, that the shape of the hair would be a slender linearly tapered cone, but the measurements revealed hairs in the form of extremely elongated paraboloids. The diameter of the wind-receptor hairs varies with the square root of the distance from the hair tip, i.e., the diameter rapidly increases with the distance from the tip and is asymptotic to the base diameter. Both the cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, and the cockroach, Periplaneta americana, showed the same hair shape. In both insects, the formation of the wind-receptor hair during metamorphosis seems to be controlled by a common cytological program. The shape of the hair constrains the mobility of the wind-receptor hair, because both the drag force caused by moving air and the moment of inertia of motion dynamics are functions of shaft diameter. The shape of the hair is a biological trait which affects the sensory information transmitted to the central nervous system.

The murine hair coat consists of four different hair types that are characterised by hair length, the number of medulla columns, and the presence and number of bends. The molecular mechanisms underlying the establishment and maintenance of distinct hair follicle fates are unknown. We identify Igfbp5 as the first molecular marker that distinguishes among different hair follicle types. High-resolution expression analysis revealed that its expression in the medulla of hair shafts is associated with the bend-forming zones of zigzag hairs. To directly examine the functional importance of segmental gene expression in the hair follicle, we have generated transgenic mice expressing Igfbp5 in differentiating keratinocytes of the medulla and inner root sheath. Ectopic expression of Igfbp5 resulted in the appearance of remarkable curvatures and thinning of hair shafts, two hallmarks of hair bends. Both effects and the natural bending process are under negative control of IGF signalling. Thus, our data identify Igfbp5 as a central regulator of hair shaft differentiation and hair type determination.

To investigate the internal structure changes in virgin black human hair keratin fibers due to aging, the structure of cross-sections at various depths of virgin black human hair (sections of new growth hair: 2 mm from the scalp) from a group of eight Japanese females in their twenties and another group of eight Japanese females in their fifties were analyzed using Raman spectroscopy. For the first time, we have succeeded in recording the Raman spectra of virgin black human hair, which had been impossible due to high melanin granule content. The key points of this method are to cross-section hair samples to a thickness of 1.50-microm, to select points at various depths of the cortex with the fewest possible melanin granules, and to optimize laser power, cross slit width as well as total acquisition time. The reproducibility of the Raman bands, namely the alpha-helix (alpha) content, the beta-sheet and/or random coil (beta/R) content, the disulfide (--SS--) content, and random coil content of two adjoining cross-sections of a single hair keratin fiber was clearly good. The --SS-- content of virgin black human hair from the Japanese females in their fifties for the cortex region decreased compared with that of the Japanese females in their twenties. On the other hand, the beta/R and alpha contents of the cortex region did not change.

Human scalp hairs are often examined microscopically to study the variation and diversity among a range of visible morphological traits. In this study, we focused on the ultrastructure of human scalp hair within its keratinized matrix, emphasizing, the density and distribution of melanosomes, variation in cuticle thickness within populations, and the relationship of hair fiber ultrastructure with biogeographic ancestry. We used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to visualize hair cross-sections and generate micron-scale resolution images for analysis of particle morphology and the layered hair matrix. Our results revealed considerable variation in all parameters examined, including the relationship of ultrastructure to biogeographic ancestry. Among the three metapopulations studied (European, African, and East Asian), we identified hair cross-sectional shape, cuticle dimensions, and melanosome distribution as traits that reveal statistically significant ancestry-related patterns. This study establishes trait patterns in hair morphology and ultrastructure among three biogeographically defined metapopulations to improve the current understanding of human variation in hair form and establish a foundation for future studies on the genetic and developmental bases of phenotypic variation in hair ultrastructure related to genotype.

1.  Filiform hairs of various lengths on the cerci of adult crickets vibrate in a sound field. These movements were measured with a photodetector for sound frequencies from 10 Hz to 200 Hz in the species Acheta domestica, Gryllus bimaculatus and Phaeophilacris spectrum.
2.  With low air-particle velocities, the hair shafts were deflected sinusoidally from their resting position, without bending or secondary oscillations (Figs. 2 A, 3 A). At higher velocities (from ca. 80 mm/s peak velocity, depending on the properties of the individual hairs), the shaft struck the cuticular rim of the socket in which the base of the hair is seated (Fig. 2B). This contact was made at an average angular displacement from the resting position of 5.16°±1.0°.
3.  The best frequencies of the hairs were found to be between 40 Hz and 100 Hz (Fig. 5A). The slope of the amplitude curve for constant peak air-particle velocity at frequencies below the best frequencies was between 0 and 6 dB/octave. Long hairs had smaller slope values than short hairs (Fig. 5C).
4.  At its best frequency the ratio of maximal tip displacement of a hair to the displacement of the air particles in the sound field was between 0.2 and 2. Only a small number of hairs (2 out of 36) showed tip displacements exceeding twice the air-particle displacement. The values of maximal angular displacement were not correlated to hair length (Fig. 5 B).
5.  The angular displacement of the hairs was phase shifted with respect to the air-particle velocity by 0° to +45° (phase lead) at sound frequencies around 10 Hz and by -45° to -120° (phase lag) at 200 Hz (Figs. 3C, 4B). At a particular frequency long hairs tended to have larger phase lags than shorter hairs (Fig. 5D).

A histological study was undertaken to clarify seasonal changes in the spermatogenic epithelium of Japanese macaques. Testicular tissue samples were excised by biopsies from five adult laboratory-maintained males in mating and non-mating seasons. The samples were fixed with Bouin's solution, embedded in paraffin, and stained with PAS and hematoxylin. Microscopic observations on cross-sections of seminiferous tubules revealed that the seminiferous epithelium in the mating season was thicker than in the non-mating season. PAS-stained granules were found in some of the dark A-type spermatogonia, which significantly increased in the non-mating season. Spermatids of the steps preceding the appearance of the acrosomic cap in stages I to III were observed significantly more often than those in the step coinciding with the formation of the acrosomic cap in stage IV. In stage I, the ratio of mature spermatids or spermatozoa to immature spermatids in the mating season was higher than that in the non-mating season. These findings suggest that spermiogenesis, as well as spermatocytogenesis, is inhibited in the non-mating season.

Treatment of excessive hair growth is an important issue in both dermatological and cosmetic practice. In contrast to treatments with medication, most physical methods are treatments that focus on the hair follicle. To obtain insight in the failure behavior of the anchorage of hairs, hairs were extracted (in vitro) from pig skin at a speed of 0.1mm/s, one at a time. The pulling force and tweezers displacement were recorded. The extracted hairs were classified with respect to the phase in the growing cycle: anagen (growing phase), telogen (resting phase) or other (catagen phase or unable to determine). The anagen hairs showed a different relation between the tweezers displacement and the pulling force than the telogen hairs. Moreover, the maximum force that could be applied before a hair was extracted proved to be lower for anagen hairs than for telogen hairs (0.36N, 1.8N, respectively). The extracted hair length, defined as the part of the hair that had been embedded in the skin which was extracted, was higher for anagen hairs than for telogen hairs (4.8mm, 3.0mm, respectively). Removing proximal skin tissue and the embedded parts of the anagen hair (root) resulted in a change of the extraction curves. The results indicate that two phenomena play a role in the anchorage of anagen hairs. We have proposed a model for the extraction of an anagen hair that has been based on these results: first the interface between hair and skin that is located around the inner root sheath (IRS) starts to fail, followed by failing of the hair itself in the region where the hair keratinizes.

Since 1962 clinical examinations have been performed on all 466 Japanese monkeys from the troops of the western part of Japan.During the external inspection we found a few cases of malformation of the hand and foot in some troops, but except for these they were in good physical condition, negative in tuberculin test and in Shigella and Salmonella infection. In all troops a high rate of helminthic infection was detected and there was a difference in the rate of occurrence of certain helminths betweenMacaca fuscata fuscata andM. fuscata yakui. No single case with the antibody to the B Virus was encountered, and it seems that no infection of the B Virus is present among the Japanese monkey. The free-ranging condition under which the Japanese monkey inhabits in troops seems to be satisfactory and they seem to have no serious problem of any kind at present.
