Aims

To evaluate the impact of the amount and distribution of soil water on xylem anatomy and xylem hydraulics of current-year shoots, plant water status and stomatal conductance of mature ‘Manzanilla’ olive trees.

Methods

Measurements of water potential, stomatal conductance, hydraulic conductivity, vulnerability to embolism, vessel diameter distribution and vessel density were made in trees under full irrigation with non-limiting soil water conditions, localized irrigation, and rain-fed conditions.

Results

All trees showed lower stomatal conductance values in the afternoon than in the morning. The irrigated trees showed water potential values around ?1.4 and ?1.6 MPa whereas the rain-fed trees reached lower values. All trees showed similar specific hydraulic conductivity (K s) and loss of conductivity values during the morning. In the afternoon, K s of rain-fed trees tended to be lower than of irrigated trees. No differences in vulnerability to embolism, vessel-diameter distribution and vessel density were observed between treatments.

Conclusions

A tight control of stomatal conductance was observed in olive which allowed irrigated trees to avoid critical water potential values and keep them in a safe range to avoid embolism. The applied water treatments did not influence the xylem anatomy and vulnerability to embolism of current-year shoots of mature olive trees.  相似文献

The first objective of the present study was to quantify the effects of tree age and stem position on specific conductivity (ks), vulnerability to embolism and water storage capacity (capacitance) in trunks of young, mature and old‐growth ponderosa pine. The second objective was to determine relationships between hydraulic characteristics and radial and height growth rates to increase the understanding of possible tradeoffs. Within sapwood at all heights and in all ages of trees, outer sapwood had 25–60% higher ks than inner sapwood. The water potential at which embolism started (air entry point) was 1.3 MPa lower in inner sapwood than outer sapwood within the mature trees, but there was no difference in the other trees. There was no significant difference in capacitances between the tops of the old growth trees, the mature trees and the young trees. Taking all data together, the capacitances increased sharply with an increase in ks and an increase in vulnerability to embolism. The hydraulic characteristics of the three age classes were correlated with the height growth rate but not with the diameter growth rate. Within these age classes, high ks was associated with the slowest yearly increase in sapwood area and with a low percentage of latewood, whereas high vulnerability to embolism and high capacitance were more closely associated with high height growth rates.  相似文献

The main stems of three young Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii (Mirbel) Franco) trees were dissected to obtain samples of secondary xylem from internodes axially along the trunk and radially within each internode. From these samples, measurements were obtained of tracheid diameter, length, the number of inter-tracheid pits per tracheid, and the diameter of the pit membranes. In addition, samples were obtained along the trunks of three old growth trees and also a small sample of roots for measurement of tracheid diameter. A gradient was apparent in all measured anatomical characters vertically along a sequence among the outer growth rings. These gradients arose not because of a gradient vertically along the internodes, but because of the strong gradients present at each internode among growth rings out from the pith. Tracheid characteristics were correlated: wider and longer tracheids had more numerous pits and wider pits, such that total pit area was about 6% of tracheid wall area independent of tracheid size. A stem model combining growth rings in parallel and internodes in series allowed for estimates of whole trunk conductance as a function of tree age. Conductance of the stem (xylem area specific conductivity) declined during the early growth of the trees, but appeared to approach a stable value as the trees aged.  相似文献

Ponderosa pine has very wide sapwood, and yet the spatial and temporal use of that sapwood for water transport is poorly understood. Moreover, there have been few comparisons of function in tips of old-growth trees in comparison with young trees. In the present study, axial and radial specific conductivity (ks), leaf specific conductivity (LSC), leaf specific conductance (kl), native embolism and the compartmentalization of sapwood water storage were characterized in trunks of young and old-growth trees. Trunks of young trees had lower ks, lower LSC and lower native embolism [corresponding to 5% loss of conductivity (PLC)] than trunks of old-growth trees. However, kl in young trees was 3.5 times higher than in old-growth trees, supporting the hypothesis that tall trees have a reduced ability to transport water to their leaves. Water storage (capacitance) of young trees was not significantly different than at the base of old-growth trees. Although the top of the old-growth trees had similar ks, LSC and kl to the young trees for a given cambial age, they had higher native embolism and lower capacitance. There was no trade-off between ks and native embolism at any height. In the tree crown, outer sapwood had 35–50% higher ks than the inner sapwood and 17–25 PLC lower native embolism. At the base of the old trees, there was no significant difference in native embolism between the outer, middle and inner sapwood, showing that refilling of embolisms was complete despite the 130-year difference in wood age among these radial positions. Although during the dry season the inner sapwood tended to be more saturated than the outer sapwood, the outer part of the sapwood contributed up to 60% of the overall stored water. Safer xylem, higher capacitance and higher kl would appear adaptive in the young trees for regulating their water resource, which is likely to be less reliable than the water availability of older trees with their more developed root system.  相似文献

Xylem embolism is one of the main processes involved in drought‐related plant mortality. Although its consequences for plant physiology are already well described, embolism formation and spread are poorly evaluated and modelled, especially for tracheid‐based species. The aim of this study was to assess the embolism formation and spread in Pinus sylvestris as a case study using X‐ray microtomography and hydraulics methods. We also evaluated the potential effects of cavitation fatigue on vulnerability to embolism and the micro‐morphology of the bordered pits using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to test for possible links between xylem anatomy and embolism spread. Finally, a novel model was developed to simulate the spread of embolism in a 2D anisotropic cellular structure. Results showed a large variability in the formation and spread of embolism within a ring despite no differences being observed in intertracheid pit membrane anatomical traits. Simulations from the model showed a highly anisotropic tracheid‐to‐tracheid embolism spreading pattern, which confirms the major role of tracheid‐to‐tracheid air seeding to explain how embolism spreads in Scots pine. The results also showed that prior embolism removal from the samples reduced the resistance to embolism of the xylem and could result in overestimates of vulnerability to embolism.  相似文献

Compression wood is formed at the underside of conifer twigs to keep branches at their equilibrium position. It differs from opposite wood anatomically and subsequently in its mechanical and hydraulic properties. The specific hydraulic conductivity (ks) and vulnerability to drought‐induced embolism (loss of conductivity versus water potential ψ) in twigs of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were studied via cryo‐scanning electron microscope observations, dye experiments and a newly developed ‘Micro‐Sperry’ apparatus. This new technique enabled conductivity measurements in small xylem areas by insertion of syringe cannulas into twig samples. The hydraulic properties were related to anatomical parameters (tracheid diameter, wall thickness). Compression wood exhibited 79% lower ks than opposite wood corresponding to smaller tracheid diameters. Vulnerability was higher in compression wood despite its narrower tracheids and thicker cell walls. The P50 (ψ at 50% loss of conductivity) was ?3.6 MPa in opposite but only ?3.2 MPa in compression wood. Low hydraulic efficiency and low hydraulic safety indicate that compression wood has primarily a mechanical function.  相似文献

We investigated the hydraulic consequences of a major decrease in root‐to‐leaf area ratio (AR:AL) caused by nutrient amendments to 15‐year‐old Pinus taeda L. stands on sandy soil. In theory, such a reduction in AR:AL should compromise the trees’ ability to extract water from drying sand. Under equally high soil moisture, canopy stomatal conductance (GS) of fertilized trees (F) was 50% that of irrigated/fertilized trees (IF), irrigated trees (I), and untreated control trees (C). As predicted from theory, F trees also decreased their stomatal sensitivity to vapour pressure deficit by 50%. The lower GS in F was associated with 50% reduction in leaf‐specific hydraulic conductance (KL) compared with other treatments. The lower KL in F was in turn a result of a higher leaf area per sapwood area and a lower specific conductivity (conducting efficiency) of the plant and its root xylem. The root xylem of F trees was also 50% more resistant to cavitation than the other treatments. A transport model predicted that the lower AR:AL in IF trees resulted in a considerably restricted ability to extract water during drought. However, this deficiency was not exposed because irrigation minimized drought. In contrast, the lower AR:AL in F trees caused only a limited restriction in water extraction during drought owing to the more cavitation resistant root xylem in this treatment. In both fertilized treatments, approximate safety margins from predicted hydraulic failure were minimal suggesting increased vulnerability to drought‐induced dieback compared with non‐fertilized trees. However, IF trees are likely to be so affected even under a mild drought if irrigation is withheld.  相似文献

Specific conductivity (ks, m2s-1MPa-1) describes the permeability of xylem and is determined by all aspects of xylem anatomy that create resistance to the flow of water. Here we test the hypothesis that ks is a function of radial and vertical position within the stem, rather than solely a function of cambial age (ring number from the pith), by measuring ks on samples excised from 35-year-old Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] trees at six heights and two or three radial positions. Sapwood ks decreased from the cambium to the heartwood boundary, and the difference between outer and inner sapwood increased with height in the tree. Beneath the live crown, inner sapwood had 80-90% the ks of outer sapwood, but only 55% just 10 m higher in the stem (about 10 nodes down from the tree top). Outer sapwood ks peaked near the base of the crown and declined toward both the base and top of the stem. These patterns can be explained by two superimposed effects: the effect of cambial age on the dimensions of tracheids as they are produced, and the effect of xylem aging, which may include accumulation of emboli and aspiration of bordered pits. Tracheid lumen diameter and earlywood and latewood density and width, all factors known to vary with cambial age, were measured on different trees of the same age and from the same stand. Lumen diameter increased with cambial age, whereas the proportion of latewood and growth ring density increased after an initial decrease in the first 5 years. Our results suggest that the effect of cambial age on xylem anatomy is not sufficient to explain variation in ks. Instead, physical position (both vertical and radial) in the stem and cambial age must be considered as determinants of conductivity.  相似文献

Effects of salinity and nutrients on carbon gain in relation to water use were studied in the grey mangrove, Avicennia marina, growing along a natural salinity gradient in south‐eastern Australia. Tall trees characterized areas of seawater salinities (fringe zone) and stunted trees dominated landward hypersaline areas (scrub zone). Trees were fertilized with nitrogen (+N) or phosphorus (+P) or unfertilized. There was no significant effect of +P on shoot growth, whereas +N enhanced canopy development, particularly in scrub trees. Scrub trees maintained greater CO2 assimilation per unit water transpired (water‐use efficiency, WUE) and had lower nitrogen‐use efficiency (NUE; CO2 assimilation rate per unit leaf nitrogen) than fringe trees. The CO2 assimilation rates of +N trees were similar to those in other treatments, but were achieved at lower transpiration rates, stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentrations. Maintaining comparable assimilation rates at lower stomatal conductance requires greater ribulose 1·5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity, consistent with greater N content per unit leaf area in +N trees. Hence, +N enhanced WUE at the expense of NUE. Instantaneous WUE estimates were supported by less negative foliar δ13C values for +N trees and scrub control trees. Thus, nutrient enrichment may alter the structure and function of mangrove forests along salinity gradients.  相似文献

Inhibition of photosynthesis was followed during autumn and early winter in current-year sun and shade needles of unfertilized and fertilized Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] by simultaneous measurements of photosynthetic O2 evolution and chlorophyll a fluorescence at 20 °C. The CO2-saturated rate of O2 evolution was generally higher in sun needles of fertilized trees than in those of unfertilized trees over a wide range of incident photon flux densities (PFDs). Furthermore, the maximum photo-chemical efficiency of photosystem (PS) II, as indicated by the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (FV/FM) was generally higher for sun needles of fertilized trees. The depression of fv/fm during frost periods was more pronounced in sun needles than in shade needles, indicating that winter inhibition in Norway spruce is strongly light-dependent. However, the inhibition of the rate of O2 evolution at high PFDs in needles of fertilized trees during early winter was partly independent of the light regime experienced by those needles in the field, which appeared to result in a pronounced decrease in the proportion of oxidized PS II reaction centres in shade needles. A nearly identical linear relationship between the quantum yield of PS II electron transport determined by chlorophyll fluorescence and the quantum yield of O2 evolution (gross rate of O2 evolution/PFD) was obtained for the investigated types of needles during autumn and early winter. Except for shade needles of fertilized trees, this appeared to be largely achieved by adjustments in thermal energy dissipation within PS II.  相似文献

Biochemical and kinetic characteristics of the Na+-K+ exchange were studied in Paracentrotus lividus eggs. Measurement of the 86Rb uptake shows that ouabain-sensitive 86Rb uptake is dramatically stimulated within the first minute following fertilization. The Na+-K+ pump-mediated K+ entry presents a maximal rate at 8 min postfertilization and then decreases to reach a plateau within 30 min. We assess that the steep rise in cell K+ occurring at fertilization (J.P. Girard, P. Payan, C. Sardet, Exp. Cell. Res. 142:215–221, 1982) does not originate from a net entry of external K+. Measured 30 min postfertilization, the half-maximal activation by K+ of the ouabain-sensitive Na+-K+ exchange is 5–6 mM and the ouabain lC50 is 5.10?5 M. Egg cortices from unfertilized and fertilized eggs show comparable Na+-K+ ATPase activity with a 50% ouabain-sensitive fraction. Vm and Km for Na+ and K+ of the enzyme are of the same order of magnitude in cortices of unfertilized and fertilized eggs. Cortical Na+-K+ ATPase from unfertilized eggs shows a ten fold increase of activity between pH 6.7 and pH 7.7. The results strongly suggest that the plasma membrane of unfertilized eggs contains a preexisting Na+-K+ transporting system which is obligatorily stimulated at fertilization.  相似文献

Three-year-old cloned trees of Cryptomeria japonica D. Don growing in a growth cabinet, in which the temperature, relative humidity and light conditions could be controlled automatically, were irrigated every day or every 3 days. The xylem pressure potential of the leaves was measured using a pressure chamber. The tangential strain of each stem was monitored with a strain gauge. After about 1 month the trees were cut, and the anatomical features of tracheids and cambial cells were observed. In trees irrigated every day, the tangential strain of the stems increased gradually with a regular diurnal pattern. On the other hand, in trees irrigated every 3 days, both the maximum and the minimum tangential strains within a stem increased every 3 days. In both irrigation conditions, the tangential strain showed a minimum value immediately before irrigation, and a maximum value around the onset of light within a day. The fluctuation of xylem pressure potential was similar to that of the tangential strain in both irrigation conditions. Stems of trees irrigated every 3 days shrank and swelled more than those irrigated every day with the same water potential change. The diameter of tracheids produced during the experimental period was larger in trees irrigated every day and smaller in trees irrigated every 3 days than that before the experiment. The number of cell layers of cells in the cell expanding zone and the cambial zone, and the tracheid diameter in the cell expanding zone were smaller in trees irrigated every 3 days than in trees irrigated every day. Trinexapacethyl (TriEt), an acylcyclohexanedionetype inhibitor of gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis, was applied to 3-year-old Eucalyptus globules saplings by localised injection near the base of each stem. The objective was to alter cambial region GA levels and to study the effects on secondary xylem fibre development. Seven weeks later wood samples, with bark and cambial region intact, were removed 10 and 30 cm above the point of injection. Fusiform cambial cell dimensions were compared with those of fibre-tracheids in the most recently formed 100 um of secondary xylem. Increasing TriEt applications from 5 to 5 000 mg active ingredient significantly reduced average fibre length, and to a lesser extent average fusiform cambial cell length. Also reduced was the number of cells in the cambial zone and the number of differentiating fibres with primary walls. However, no trends were evident for changes in fibre diameter, the proportion of vessel elements or the ratio of cambial ray cells to fusiform cambial cells. Two gibberellins (GA1 and GA20), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) were quantified in cambial region tissues by gas chromatographymass spectrometry using stable isotope labelled internal standards. Increasing TriEt application reduced both GA1 and GA20 levels. Effects on IAA and ABA were not significant, although their levels tended to be lower at the highest TriEt application rate. The elongation of secondary xylem fibres was positively correlated with higher levels of endogenous GA1 (rs= 0.74, P < 0.01) and GA20 (rs= 0.72, P < 0.01). These results support a causal role for GA1 in cambial cell division. They are also consistent with the hypothesis that the elongation of differentiating secondary xylem fibres in woody an–giosperms is dependent on GA1 levels in the cambial region.  相似文献

Effects of Light Intensity on Tracheid Dimensions in Picea sitchensis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
DENNE  M. P. 《Annals of botany》1974,38(2):337-345
In seedlings of Picea sitchensis grown in constant conditions,or within older trees in the field, light intensity had no neteffect on the wall thickness of tracheids produced at the samepoint in time. This appears to be due to a balanced regulatorysystem, effects of light intensity on rate of accumulation ofwall volume per leaf being offset by differences in rate ofxylem increment, and differences in wall material per tracheidbeing nullified in their effects on wall thickness by effectson tracheid diameter. Mean tracheid wall thickness across the growth ring increasedwith light intensity, due to increase in proportion of late-woodassociated with the longer duration of cambial activity at higherlight intensity, duration of wall thickening increasing duringthe season. Duration of wall thickening did not vary with lightintensity. The rate of increase in wall volume was limited by light intensity(and hence possibly by substrate availability) at all lightintensities in the field, but in seedlings in controlled conditionsthe rate of wall production was no greater at 20 000 lx thanat 6700 lx.  相似文献

Dihydrofolate reductase activity in fertilized eggs of the sea urchin, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, was almost the same as in unfertilized eggs. Aminopterin inhibited the enzyme competitively with dihydrofolate (FH2). The apparent Km value for FH2 in the dihydrofolate reductase reaction was about 0.1 μM in the crude homogenate of both unfertilized and fertilized eggs. Dihydrofolate reductase in the eggs was also inhibited by palmitoyl-CoA. The inhibition was canceled by polyamines, especially by spermine, but putrescine failed to prevent the enzyme from the inhibition. The change in long-chain acyl-CoA and polyamine concentrations during fertilization are discussed as possible regulatory factors of the enzyme.  相似文献

Xylem vulnerability to cavitation differs between tree species according to their drought resistance, more xerophilous species being more resistant to xylem cavitation. Variability in xylem vulnerability to cavitation is also found within species, especially between in situ populations. The origin of this variability has not been clearly identified. Here we analyzed the response of xylem hydraulic traits of Populus tremula×Populus alba trees to three different soil water regimes. Stem xylem vulnerability was scored as the xylem water potential causing 12, 50 and 88% loss of conductivity (P12, P50 and P88). Vulnerability to cavitation was found to acclimate to growing conditions under different levels of soil water content, with P50 values of ?1.82, ?2.03 and ?2.45 MPa in well‐watered, moderately water‐stressed and severely water‐stressed poplars, respectively. The value of P12, the xylem tension at which cavitation begins, was correlated with the lowest value of midday leaf water potential (ψm) experienced by each plant, the difference between the two parameters being approximately 0.5 MPa, consistent with the absence of any difference in embolism level between the different water treatments. These results support the hypothesis that vulnerability to cavitation is a critical trait for resistance to drought. The decrease in vulnerability to cavitation under growing conditions of soil drought was correlated with decreased vessel diameter, increased vessel wall thickness and a stronger bordered pit field (t/b)2. The links between these parameters are discussed.  相似文献

Hydraulic redistribution (HR), the passive movement of water via roots from moist to drier portions of the soil, occurs in many ecosystems, influencing both plant and ecosystem-water use. We examined the effects of HR on root hydraulic functioning during drought in young and old-growth Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. Ex Laws) trees growing in four sites. During the 2002 growing season, in situ xylem embolism, water deficit and xylem vulnerability to embolism were measured on medium roots (2–4-mm diameter) collected at 20–30 cm depth. Soil water content and water potentials were monitored concurrently to determine the extent of HR. Additionally, the water potential and stomatal conductance (gs) of upper canopy leaves were measured throughout the growing season. In the site with young Douglas-fir trees, root embolism increased from 20 to 55 percent loss of conductivity (PLC) as the dry season progressed. In young ponderosa pine, root embolism increased from 45 to 75 PLC. In contrast, roots of old-growth Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine trees never experienced more than 30 and 40 PLC, respectively. HR kept soil water potential at 20–30 cm depth above –0.5 MPa in the old-growth Douglas-fir site and –1.8 MPa in the old-growth ponderosa pine site, which significantly reduced loss of shallow root function. In the young ponderosa pine stand, where little HR occurred, the water potential in the upper soil layers fell to about –2.8 MPa, which severely impaired root functioning and limited recovery when the fall rains returned. In both species, daily maximum gs decreased linearly with increasing root PLC, suggesting that root xylem embolism acted in concert with stomata to limit water loss, thereby maintaining minimum leaf water potential above critical values. HR appears to be an important mechanism for maintaining shallow root function during drought and preventing total stomatal closure.  相似文献

The effect of herbivore abundance and nutrients on microborer communities and their rates of bioerosion of Strombus gigas shells was studied using herbivore-exclusion cages and inorganic fertilizers at Glovers Reef, Belize. Microborers colonizing shells in each treatment were identified and their colonization rates were calculated from scanning electron microscopy of the boring casts. In all treatments the dominant microborer was the green alga Phaeophila sp. Cyanobacteria were most abundant within fertilized and fungi in unfertilized treatments. The highest microbioerosion rates and most distinctive microborer community were found on the treatment with both reduced herbivores and fertilization. All fertilized treatments had significantly higher bioerosion rates than unfertilized treatments. Treatments with macrograzer access had microbioerosion rates less than half the fertilized cages. Bioerosion rates in unfertilized treatments were lowest and not different with and without macrograzers. Consequently, increased nutrient concentrations on reefs have the potential to increase rates of microbioerosion and macrograzers can modify the composition and density of the microborer community.  相似文献

The diameter and wall thickness of tracheids produced after indoleacetic acid treatment were not significantly different from those of the intact controls, for the first few weeks after treatment of disbudded shoots of Picea abies Karst. and Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr. However, lateral application of indoleacetic acid (IAA) to intact shoots increased both tracheid diameter and wall thickness; it is suggested that IAA acted synergistically with another endogenous growth regulator, which was also removed by disbudding. Increase in wall thickness after exogenous IAA was associated with increase in duration of the wall thickening phase of tracheid differentiation; this is discussed in relation to the seasonal change from early to latewood. Cambial dormancy was induced by disbudding during active wood production. Since this occurred with or without the presence of current leaves, it is concluded that in Picea continued cambial activity depends upon supply of auxin from the buds, and cannot be supplied from expanded leaves or from the internode itself. Neither indoleacetic acid nor gibberellic acid stimulated renewed cambial activity when applied after the cessation of wood production. With both disbudded and intact shoots, the effectiveness of exogenous IAA declined with time, probably due to decreasing penetration through callus developing at the wounded surface. It is suggested that this apparent change in IAA effectiveness may explain some discrepancies between the results of previous observers.Abbreviations IAA Indoleacetic acid - GA3 Gibberellic acid  相似文献
