The scallop Chlamys hastata frequently carries epibionts such as sponges and barnacles on its shells. Although the scallop-sponge relationship has been characterized as a mutualism, little is known about the scallop-barnacle relationship. This study investigated the effects of sponge and barnacle encrustation on the ability of C. hastata to avoid predation by the sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides. In feeding trials, P. helianthoides caught and consumed significantly more barnacle-encrusted scallops (7.7 ± 0.8 out of 20 scallops) than scallops encrusted by either of the sponges Myxilla incrustans (4.1 ± 0.9) or Mycale adhaerens (3.0 ± 0.5). Epibiont-free scallops (5.7 ± 0.5) formed an intermediate treatment between barnacle-encrusted and sponge-encrusted scallops. Possible mechanisms by which the sponges protected the scallops were investigated in two ways: two feeding trials were videotaped to allow qualitative analysis of sea star and scallop behavior and sea star feeding responses to scallop and sponge homogenates were determined to investigate if sea stars accept scallops and sponges as prey. Sea stars displayed positive feeding responses to scallop puree 97.5% ± 1.6 of the time while only displaying positive responses to Mycale adhaerens homogenate 4.4% ± 2.0 of the time and to Myxilla incrustans homogenate 4.4% ± 2.9 of the time. The videotaped feeding trials indicated that interference with tube feet adhesion by the sponge deterred predation. Observations of both sea stars that were videotaped showed that neither avoided trying to capture sponge-encrusted scallops, and at no time was a captured scallop willingly released by the sea stars. Thus, it appears that sponges provide tactile-mechanical protection and possibly chemical or tactile camouflage in this predator/prey relationship. Finally, the effects of sponge encrustation on barnacle settlement were determined. Field experiments showed that barnacle larvae settled more frequently on epibiont-free scallops than on those with either of the two sponges, potentially protecting the scallops from an epibiont that increases the scallop’s susceptibility to predation. ABSTRACT

Commercial scallops (Pecten fumatus) were collected from Bass Strait, Australia from 41 dredge tows. Of these, four dredges undertaken in February 2016 at 46 m depth returned scallops that were covered by ascidians of the Pyura stolonifera species complex, commonly known as cunjevoi. There were no obvious signs of immediate ill health in the scallops, with meat being assessed as normal quality and all scallops requiring force to separate the shells. Ascidian-encrusted scallops were significantly smaller, and previous tows in the same location ten and eight months earlier returned far fewer scallops with clean shells and no signs of ascidians. This suggests that both both scallop and ascidian recruitment and growth occurred during the period between sampling events. Future research combining laboratory experiments and field observations is recommended to understand this relationship and its potential impacts on scallop populations.  相似文献

The asteroid predator Coscinasterias calamaria (Gray) was caged with the scallops Chlamys asperrima (Lamarck), with and without epizoic sponges, and Chlamys bifrons (Lamarck) which lacks epizoic sponges. The sponges inhibited predation on host C. asperrima apparently by camouflaging the scallop and interfering with adhesion of the predators' tube feet. This enabled the scallops to escape easily. C. bifrons, which is heavily constructed and swims more readily, was not significantly more susceptible to predation than sponge-covered C. asperrima. The sponge clad C. asperrima were less responsive to the presence of Coscinasterias, and made fewer repeated escapes, than both Chlamys asperrima without sponge and C. bifrons. The shells of C. asperrima with sponge were thinner than those without, possibly a result of the latter having to repair damage caused by borers. The growth of sponge-covered scallops was enhanced, their shells were higher, heavier, and contained more soft tissue for their number of growth rings than those without sponge. The scallops appeared to facilitate recruitment of the sponges which were uncommon on other substrata.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of epizooic sponge cover, scallop size, and height of byssal attachment above sea-bed level on the survival of the scallop Chlamys asperrima (Lamarck) and its epizooic sponges. The presence of a sponge on a scallop increased survival in the field and in caging experiments. Mortality of small scallops was greater than that of larger ones, but small sponge-covered scallops suffered less predation than large bare ones. Attachment at the sea-bed level adversely affected both scallops and sponges. Scallops were more susceptible to starfish predation at sea-bed level, while sponges experienced more siltation and abrasion. Potential benefits of a mutualism are discussed.  相似文献

Predators in nature include an array of prey types in their diet, and often select certain types over others. We examined (i) prey selection by sea stars (Asterias vulgaris) and rock crabs (Cancer irroratus) when offered two prey types, juvenile sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) and blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), and (ii) the effect of prey density on predation, prey selection, and component behaviours. We quantified predation rates, behavioural components (proportion of time spent searching for prey, encounter probabilities) and various prey characteristics (shell strength, energy content per prey, handling time per prey) to identify mechanisms underlying predation patterns and to assess the contribution of active and passive prey selection to observed selection of prey. Sea stars strongly selected mussels over scallops, resulting from both active and passive selection. Active selection was associated with the probability of attack upon encounter; it was higher on mussels than on scallops. The probability of capture upon attack, associated with passive selection, was higher for mussels than for scallops, since mussels can not swim to escape predators. Sea stars consumed few scallops when mussels were present, and so did not have a functional response on scallops (the target prey). Rock crabs exhibited prey switching: they selected mussels when scallop density was very low, did not select a certain prey type when scallop density was intermediate, and selected scallops when scallop density was high relative to mussel density. The interplay between encounter rate (associated with passive selection) and probability of consumption upon capture (associated with both active and passive selection) explained observed selection by crabs. Scallops were encountered by crabs relatively more often and/or mussels less often than expected from random movements of animals at all scallop densities. However, the probability of consumption varied with scallop density: it was lower for scallops than mussels at low and intermediate scallop densities, but tended to be higher for scallops than mussels at high scallop densities. When mussels were absent, crabs did not have a functional response on scallops, but rather were at the plateau of the response. When mussels were present with scallops at relatively low density, crabs exhibited a type II functional response on scallops. Our results have implications for the provision of protective refuges for species of interest (i.e., scallops) released onto the sea bed, such as in population enhancement operations and bottom aquaculture.  相似文献

We examined the impact of adding scallop shells (byproduct of the fisheries) to sandy and rocky sea bottoms in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The effect of adding shells was greatest on sandy bottoms where species richness increased 3.7-fold and species diversity 1.9-fold. The increase in most species was due to immigration rather than new settlement. Trials examining the effect of different densities of shells in plots of the same size (4 m2) showed that species diversity increased rapidly with shell abundance and levelled off when shells covered half of the bottom, whereas species richness only levelled off when shells almost completely covered the bottom. Trials examining the effect of the size of the shell patches (shell density being kept constant) showed that species diversity was already maximal in 1-m2 plots, whereas species richness only attained a plateau at 4 m2. Our small-scale trials indicate that the addition of shells would have a positive impact, increasing numerous invertebrates, including commercial species (scallops, whelks and urchins).  相似文献

The marked variability in the natural recruitment of Argopecten purpuratus, a common characteristic for many marine invertebrates with a pelagic larval stages, with important consequences for community functioning, is a problem for the fishery on this species. We ran experiments in the subtidal zone in Tongoy Bay, Chile, to test whether providing a filamentous settlement substratum in the water column and shell litter on the bottom would increase the settlement and post-larval survival of scallops. We placed collectors made of Netlon® 50 cm above the sand and mud bottoms, and three and a half months later there were significantly more scallop spat on the bottom under the collectors (38.5 ind m− 2), than in areas without collectors (0 ind m− 2), or in controls where collectors were installed but a bag around the collector prevented the juveniles from falling to the bottom (4.8 ind m− 2). Also, the addition of either entire or broken scallop shells to the bottom resulted in increased settlement of juveniles on the bottom (33.7 ind m− 2 with entire shells and 48.1 ind m− 2 with broken shells), compared to plots where no shell debris was added (0 ind m− 2). The 2 week survival rate of juveniles (< 3 mm shell height) added to plots covered with entire scallop shells (12.4%) and to plots covered with broken shells (15.1%) was greater than in plots where we did not add shells (3.5%). These results suggest that substrate availability explains spatial variability of recruitment for this species, while temporal variability (between years) is mainly the consequence of larval supply. The manipulation of substrates can locally increase settlement, but will not remove the temporal variability. Whereas our experiments provide useful insights into strategies for managing or establishing local scallop populations, experiments over a longer term and at a large scale are needed to further understand the community functioning in order to develop a strategy for managing this fishery resource.  相似文献

An approach is developed to estimate size of Iceland scallop shells from AUV photos. A small-scale camera based AUV survey of Iceland scallops was conducted at a defined site off West Iceland. Prior to height estimation of the identified shells, the distortions introduced by the vehicle orientation and the camera lens were corrected. The average AUV pitch and roll was and deg that resulted in error in ground distance rendering these effects negligible. A quadratic polynomial model was identified for lens distortion correction. This model successfully predicted a theoretical grid from a frame photographed underwater, representing the inherent lens distortion. The predicted shell heights were scaled for the distance from the bottom at which the photos were taken. This approach was validated by height estimation of scallops of known sizes. An underestimation of approximately cm was seen, which could be attributed to pixel error, where each pixel represented cm. After correcting for this difference the estimated heights ranged from cm. A comparison of the height-distribution from a small-scale dredge survey carried out in the vicinity showed non-overlapping peaks in size distribution, with scallops of a broader size range visible in the AUV survey. Further investigations are necessary to evaluate any underlying bias and to validate how representative these surveys are of the true population. The low resolution images made identification of smaller scallops difficult. Overall, the observations of very few small scallops in both surveys could be attributed to low recruitment levels in the recent years due to the known scallop parasite outbreak in the region.  相似文献

The association of the sponges Myxilla incrustans (Esper) and Mycale adhaerens (Lambe) with the scallops Chlamys hastata hericia Gould and C. rubida (Hines) is shown to be a mutualism, which protects the sponges from predatory sponge-rasping dorid nudibranchs and the scallops from predatory starfish. The sponge is protected by scallop motility (also shown for the Suberites ficus-hermit crab association). The sponge helps to protect the scallops by altering the surface texture of the shell so increasing the efficacy of the swimming escape response by decreasing the adhesive abilities of asteroid tube-feet. The sponge also provides tactile camouflage against certain predatory starfish. There was no evidence that either component chemically deceived or repelled the predators of the other component. Predation pressure on both components of the association appears to be the major force leading to the mutualism.  相似文献

The importance of epibiosis in Antarctic benthic communities is highlighted here considering the specific diversity of sponges living on shells of the scallop Adamussium colbecki and on spines of the cidaroid urchin Ctenocidaris perrieri. Scallops are from three different areas along the Victoria Land [Tethys Bay (TB), New Harbour (NH), Dunlop Island (DI)], while cidaroid urchins are from NH but not present in the two other stations. Homaxinella balfourensis is the commonest species both on the scallops and cidaroid urchins. Other common species on scallops are Myxilla (Myxilla) asigmata, Lissodendoryx (Ectyodoryx) nobilis and Iophon unicorne at NH, Iophon unicorne at DI, and Iophon radiatum, Haliclona sp. 1, Iophon unicorne and Lissodendoryx (Ectyodoryx) nobilis at TB. The highest number of sponge species we found on a single scallop was ten and the sample was collected at NH. On the spines of C. perrieri, Isodictya erinacea, Iophon unicorne and Haliclona (Rhizoniera) dancoi are present too. A. colbecki and C. perrieri, generally living on soft bottoms, represent important substrata for several sponge species. In this way, sponges may increase their dispersal exploiting valves and spines as stepping stones.  相似文献

Habitat characteristics greatly influence the patterns of distribution and abundance in scallops, providing structure for the settlement of spat and influencing predation risk and rates of survival. Establishing scallop-habitat relationships is relevant to understanding the ecological processes that regulate scallop populations and to managing critical habitats. This information is particularly relevant for the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, south-eastern Tasmania (147.335 W, 43.220 S), a region that has supported significant but highly variable scallop production over many years, including protracted periods of stock collapse. Three species of scallops are present in the region; the commercial scallop Pecten fumatus, the queen scallop Equichlamys bifrons, and the doughboy scallop Mimachlamys asperrima. We used dive surveys and Generalized Additive Modelling to examine the relationship between the distribution and abundance patterns of each species and associated habitat characteristics. The aggregated distribution of each species could be predicted as a function of sediment type and species-specific habitat structural components. While P. fumatus was strongly associated with finer sediments and E. bifrons with coarse grain sediments, M. asperrima had a less selective association, possibly related to its ability to attach on a wide range of substrates. Other habitat characteristics explaining P. fumatus abundance were depth, Asterias amurensis abundance, shell and macroalgae cover. Equichlamys bifrons was strongly associated with macroalgae and seagrass cover, whereas M. asperrima abundance was greatly explained by sponge cover. The models define a set of relationships from which plausible hypotheses can be developed. We propose that these relationships are mediated by predation pressure as well as the specific behavioural characteristics of each species. The findings also highlight the specific habitat characteristics that are relevant for spatial management and habitat restoration plans.  相似文献

Scallops (Patinopecten yessoensis) are extensively cultured and landed in Japan. During the processing of scallops, large amounts of internal organs and shells are discharged as industrial wastes. To reduce the burden on the environment, effective utilization and disposal methods of the wastes are required. Therefore, we have screened for useful materials in scallop internal organs, and found ultraviolet (UV) absorbing compounds from scallop ovaries. Based on UV absorption, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), ESI-MS/MS, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, three UV absorbing compounds were identified as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs): shinorine, porphyra-334 (P-334), and mycosporine-glycine. To investigate whether MAAs can act as a UV protector for human cells, we examined the protective effects of the three MAAs on human fibroblast cells from UV irradiation. All of the three examined MAAs protected the cells from UV-induced cell death. In particular, mycosporine-glycine had the strongest effect. Further, we found a promotion effect of MAAs on the proliferation of human skin fibroblast cells. From these results, it was found that the three MAAs isolated from scallop ovaries have a protective effect on human cells against UV light. MAAs have potential applications in cosmetics and toiletries as a UV protectors and activators of cell proliferation.  相似文献

Increase in oxidative damage and decrease in cellular maintenance is often associated with aging, but, in marine ectotherms, both processes are also strongly influenced by somatic growth, maturation and reproduction. In this study, we used a single cohort of the short-lived catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus, to investigate the effects of somatic growth, reproduction and aging on oxidative damage parameters (protein carbonyls, TBARS and lipofuscin) and cellular maintenance mechanisms (antioxidant activity and apoptosis) in scallops, caged in their natural environment. The concentrations of protein carbonyls and TBARS increased steeply during the early period of fast growth and during reproduction in one-year-old scallops. However, oxidative damage was transient, and apoptotic cell death played a pivotal role in eliminating damage in gill, mantle and muscle tissues of young scallops. Animals were able to reproduce again in the second year, but the reduced intensity of apoptosis impaired subsequent removal of damaged cells. In late survivors low antioxidant capacity and apoptotic activity together with a fast accumulation of the age pigment lipofuscin was observed. Rates of oxygen consumption and oxidative stress markers were strongly dependent on somatic growth and reproductive state but not on temperature. Compared to longer-lived bivalves, A. ventricosus seems more susceptible to oxidative stress with higher tissue-specific protein carbonyl levels and fast accumulation of lipofuscin in animals surviving the second spawning. Superoxide dismutase activity and apoptotic cell death intensity were however higher in this short-lived scallop than in longer-lived bivalves. The life strategy of this short-lived and intensely predated scallop supports rapid somatic growth and fitness as well as early maturation at young age at the cost of fast cellular degradation in second year scallops.  相似文献

Comparison of 18S ribosomal RNA gene sequences between diverse bivalve species, including eight scallop species, allowed the design of an 18S rRNA targeted oligonucleotide probe (BS-1364) that was specific for scallops belonging to the genus Argopecten (bay and calico scallops). The high sequence similarity of the 18S rRNA gene between Argopecten irradians and Argopecten gibbus (98.8%) prevented the design of an A. irradians species-specific probe. Hybridization studies using amplified 18S rDNA from a diverse collection of bivalve species demonstrated that the specificity of the digoxygenin-labeled probe was consistent with the predicted specificity indicated by sequence comparison. Hybridization studies using laboratory-spawned bay scallop veligers indicated that a single veliger could be detected by probe hybridization in a blot format, and that probe hybridization signal was proportional (r 2= .99) to the abundance of veligers. Methods for rRNA extraction and blotting were developed that allowed bay scallop veligers to be specifically and quantitatively identified in natural plankton samples. Preliminary studies conducted in Tampa Bay, Florida, suggest that introduced scallops can successfully spawn and produce veligers under in situ conditions. The Argopecten-specific probe and methods developed in this study provide the means to study the production and fate of bay scallop larvae in nature and provide evidence that scallops introduced into Tampa Bay have the potential for successful reproduction and enhancement of scallop stocks. The shell color polymorphism widely exists in economic shellfish, which not only results in a better visual perception but also shows great value as an economic trait for breeding. Small numbers of reddish-orange shell Yesso scallops, Patinopecten yessoensis, were found in cultured populations compared to the brown majority. In this study, a genome-wide association study was conducted to understand the genetic basis of shell color. Sixty-six 2b-RAD libraries with equal numbers of reddish-orange and brown shell individuals were constructed and sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq 2000 platform. A total of 322,332,684 high-quality reads were obtained, and the average sequencing depth was 18.4×. One genomic region on chromosome 11 that included 239 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was identified as significantly associated with shell color. After verification by high-resolution melting in another population, two SNPs were selected as specific loci for reddish-orange shell color. These two SNPs could be used to improve the selective breeding progress of true-breeding strains with complete reddish-orange scallops. In addition, within the significantly associated genomic region, candidate genes were identified using marker sequences to search the draft genome of Yesso scallop. Three genes (LDLR, FRIS, and FRIY) with known functions in carotenoid metabolism were identified. Further study using high-performance liquid chromatography proved that the relative level of carotenoids in the reddish-orange shells was 40 times higher than that in the brown shells. These results suggested that the accumulation of carotenoids contributes to the formation of reddish-orange shells.  相似文献

Semimytilus algosus is a small mussel species that fouls artificial culture systems of the scallop Argopecten purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819) in the north of Chile. Since biofouling organisms are a serious problem in culture, competing with the scallops for food and oxygen, environmentally-friendly methods are required to mitigate the effects of this fouling in the culture systems. The present study reports the evaluation of the inhibitory effect of biofilms and extracellular products (EP) of the bacterium Alteromonas strain Ni1-LEM on the byssal formation of S. algosus juveniles. Laboratory bioassays were carried out to determine the reattachment, exploratory behaviour and/or byssal thread production of the mussel in plastic Petri dishes containing bacterial biofilms, different dilutions of EP, and EP incorporated in a test substratum. It was concluded from the results that culture supernatants of the Alteromonas tested had an inhibitory effect on reattachment by S. algosus.  相似文献

The bioerosion of shells of the Japanese scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis by endolithic organisms over the last few decades and millenia in areas close to the main sources of organic pollution in Peter the Great Bay was studied. It was established that the occurrence of Japanese scallop shells damaged by borers increased over 2500 years practically from 0 up to 96% in the northern part of the bay at Mys Peschany Cape, which is subject to the impact of the Pazdol'naya River drain. The bioerosion of the Japanese scallop shells has increased considerably over the last two decades in the coastal zone, near the center of the city of Vladivostok, at one of the main sources of the city's wastewater discharge. Thus, in 4-year old individuals 33.0 ± 2.9% of upper valves were eroded on average in 1982; in 1998 it was already 68.3 ± 6.4%. In Reinike strait, that is, at some distance from the mouth of Razdol'naya River and from the main discharge sources of polluted waters of Vladivostok, the shells of the Japanese scallop were eroded to a lesser extent than in the population from the coastal region near the city. However, a significant increase in the degree of bioerosion of the scallop shells was observed over one-and-a-half decades: in 1987 in 4-year scallops 2.3 ± 0.3% of the area of the upper valve was eroded on average, and in 1999 that parameter increased and became 32.6 ± 3.4%. In the western part of Peter the Great Bay near Furugelm Island, which is located 20 km away from the mouth of the Tumannaya River, the degree of bioerosion of scallop shells had also increased significantly over the last 30 years. The increase in the degree of bioerosion of the shell is connected to a gradual increase in the content of organic substances in the bottom sediments. This is a factor favorable for the development of bacteria and phytoplankton, which is a food source for polychaetes—the basic shell boring symbionts of the Japanese scallop.  相似文献

Although some external coloration and pigmentation patterns in molluscan shells may be attributable to environmental factors, most variation in these phenotypic characters depends on uncomplicated genetic mechanisms. Genetic research on inheritance of color variations in the north-Chilean scallop (Argopecten purpuratus) has now been expanded to analyze color segregation in juvenile scallops produced under controlled conditions employing self- and cross-fertilization. Calculations from the results were used for comparison with different numerical models based on Mendelian inheritance, and results were also obtained on the inheritance of a dorsoventral white line often observed on the left (upper) valve in this species. The results confirmed the hereditary basis for color variation in the shell of this scallop, suggesting a simple, dominant model of epistasis to explain the distribution of the different color variants observed (purple, brown, orange, yellow, and white). The presence of the white line may be controlled by a recessive allele with simple Mendelian traits on a locus distinct from those that control color variation.  相似文献

In primate teeth, the dentino-enamel junction (DEJ) exhibits a scalloped appearance, the functional importance of which has been the subject of various suggestions and speculations. Simplified finite-element (FE) models of DEJ microanatomy were created, both in 2D and 3D, and their biomechanical behavior was tested and compared. Consistently, the models with the scalloped DEJ, although having higher maximum tensile stresses than the straight DEJ models, showed discontinuous concentrations of stress. In straight DEJ models, tensile stresses act at the DEJ over continuous areas in a direction, which would push the two tissues apart, thus leading to delamination of the DEJ. Perhaps even more important, in the scallop model, the net-compression towards the DEJ was consistently higher than net-tension away from it. As a consequence, dentine and enamel would be pushed towards each other during loading (i.e., during mastication). These findings suggest that the scalloped nature of the DEJ confers a biomechanical advantage to the integrity of the tooth during mastication. Furthermore, there exists a correlation between pronounced prism decussation and scallop magnitude, suggesting that scallops may have been selected for in response to high bite forces. However, given the equivocal relationship between scallops and presumed bite force across mammalian taxa, we propose that scallops could in fact be exaptations.  相似文献
