We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of a unique positive equilibrium point and a set of sufficient conditions on the existence of periodic solutions for a 3-dimensional system which arises from a model of competition between plasmid-bearing and plasmid-free organisms in a chemostat with an inhibitor. The classical two-species competition system is modified to include coefficients which are time-periodic with the same period. We show first that all (nonnegative) solutions converge to a periodic one, having the same period, thus excluding subharmonics. The global structure of the set of all periodic solutions is then investigated. This is accomplished by developing a geometric theory of the discrete dynamical system defined by the iterates of the period map T. It turns out, in particular, that periodic solutions appear which have no counterpart in the corresponding time-averaged system: thus oscillations in the environment may cause the two species to coexist in an oscillatory regime even if the corresponding averaged system would force either of the two species to extinction.  相似文献

 During their first year of life sheep acquire parasites through grazing, and simultaneously build up an immunity to infection. At the beginning of each year non-immune lambs are introduced onto contaminated pasture. We represent this process by differential equations describing the within-year dynamics, and defining a difference equation that describes the between-year dynamics. An example with two system parameters is analysed in detail. It is shown that regions exist in parameter space where periodic (between-year) or aperiodic solutions occur. Lingyang Qingfei Wan produced by Beijing TongRenTang is a long-standing and popular medicine in China and international pharmaceutical markets. Concerns continue to be raised about the legality of usage of saiga antelope, which was defined as endangered species by Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora legislation and internal legislation in China. Therefore, the alternative pill in which substitutes saiga antelope with goat in the formula of Lingyang Qingfei Wan was developed. In order to authenticate the origin of animal contents in Lingyang Qingfei Wan and its alternative pill, molecular diagnostic assay was utilized by mtDNA polymorphism analysis. Four universal primer pairs containing mtDNA 12SrRNA, 16SrRNA, cytochrome b gene and cytochrome oxidase I were employed to obtain species-specific sequences of saiga antelope and goat, and multiple species-specific primer pairs for saiga antelope and goat were used to identify the animal origin in patent pills according to nucleotide polymorphisms between the two species. In additions, alternative techniques were attempted surrounding dilemmas of low concentration of target DNAs and presence of PCR-inhibitory substances in organic ingredients within complex pill. Results revealed that all species-specific primers could be successfully used for authentication of animal origin within complex pill, and sample preprocessing was critical during experimental manipulation. Internal positive control was an efficient and cost-effective way to assist in monitoring the potential interference from inhibitory substances which existed in the highly processed pills.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a model of the biotic pyrite iron cycle catalyzed by bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, in mining activity sites waste dumps. Chemical reactions, reaction rates and the population growth model are mostly taken from the existing literature. Analysis of the corresponding dynamical system shows the existence of up to four non-trivial steady state solutions. The stability of the equilibria solutions is determined, finding up to two coexisting stable solutions. Two Hopf bifurcations and a region of parameter space in which there are stable periodic solutions are found. In addition, we find a homoclinic bifurcation which gives rise to a stable periodic orbit of large period. The existence of these stable oscillatory solutions gives a possible explanation for the oscillations of bacteria concentration and pH for the iron cycle, described in Jaynes et al. (Water Resour Res 20:233–242, 1984).  相似文献

Our aim in this paper is to investigate the boundedness, the extreme stability, and the periodicity of positive solutions of the periodically forced Sigmoid Beverton-Holt model: [Formula: see text] where {a ( n )} is a positive periodic sequence with period p and δ>0.  Reaction-diffusion equations are ubiquitous as models of biological pattern formation. In a recent paper [4] we have shown that incorporation of domain growth in a reaction-diffusion model generates a sequence of quasi-steady patterns and can provide a mechanism for increased reliability of pattern selection. In this paper we analyse the model to examine the transitions between patterns in the sequence. Introducing a piecewise linear approximation we find closed form approximate solutions for steady-state patterns by exploiting a small parameter, the ratio of diffusivities, in a singular perturbation expansion. We consider the existence of these steady-state solutions as a parameter related to the domain length is varied and predict the point at which the solution ceases to exist, which we identify with the onset of transition between patterns for the sequence generated on the growing domain. Applying these results to the model in one spatial dimension we are able to predict the mechanism and timing of transitions between quasi-steady patterns in the sequence. We also highlight a novel sequence behaviour, mode-tripling, which is a consequence of a symmetry in the reaction term of the reaction-diffusion system. Summary For a general multiple loop feedback inhibition system in which the end product can inhibit any or all of the intermediate reactions it is shown that biologically significant behaviour is always confined to a bounded region of reaction space containing a unique equilibrium. By explicit construction of a Liapunov function for the general n dimensional differential equation it is shown that some values of reaction parameters cause the concentration vector to approach the equilibrium asymptotically for all physically realizable initial conditions. As the parameter values change, periodic solutions can appear within the bounded region. Some information about these periodic solutions can be obtained from the Hopf bifurcation theorem. Alternatively, if specific parameter values are known a numerical method can be used to find periodic solutions and determine their stability by locating a zero of the displacement map. The single loop Goodwin oscillator is analysed in detail. The methods are then used to treat an oscillator with two feedback loops and it is found that oscillations are possible even if both Hill coefficients are equal to one.  相似文献

Summary A delay-integral equation, proposed by Cooke and Kaplan in [1] as a model of epidemics, is studied. The focus of this work is on the qualitative behavior of solutions as a certain parameter is allowed to vary. It is shown that if a certain threshold is not exceeded then solutions tend to zero exponentially while if this threshold is exceeded, periodic solutions exist. We present the analysis of a phase-shift sequence obtained from random transitions between periodic solutions of a biochemical dynamical model, formed by a system of three differential equations and which represent an instability-generating multienzymatic mechanism. The phase-shift series was studied in terms of Hurst’s rescaled range analysis. We found that the data were characterized by a Hurst exponent H = 0.69, which was clearly indicative of long-term trends. This result had a high significance level, as was confirmed through Monte Carlo simulations in which the data were scrambled in the series, destroying its original ordering. For these series we obtained a Hurst exponent which was consistent with the expectation of H = 0.5 for a random independent process. This clearly showed that, although the transitions between the periodic solutions were provoked randomly, the stochastic process obtained exhibited long-term persistence. The fractal dimension was also estimated and found to be consistent with the value of the Hurst exponent.  相似文献

A state-dependent impulsive model is proposed for integrated pest management (IPM). IPM involves combining biological, mechanical, and chemical tactics to reduce pest numbers to tolerable levels after a pest population has reached its economic threshold (ET). The complete expression of an orbitally asymptotically stable periodic solution to the model with a maximum value no larger than the given ET is presented, the existence of which implies that pests can be controlled at or below their ET levels. We also prove that there is no periodic solution with order larger than or equal to three, except for one special case, by using the properties of the LambertW function and Poincare map. Moreover, we show that the existence of an order two periodic solution implies the existence of an order one periodic solution. Various positive invariant sets and attractors of this impulsive semi-dynamical system are described and discussed. In particular, several horseshoe-like attractors, whose interiors can simultaneously contain stable order 1 periodic solutions and order 2 periodic solutions, are found and the interior structure of the horseshoe-like attractors is discussed. Finally, the largest invariant set and the sufficient conditions which guarantee the global orbital and asymptotic stability of the order 1 periodic solution in the meaningful domain for the system are given using the Lyapunov function. Our results show that, in theory, a pest can be controlled such that its population size is no larger than its ET by applying effects impulsively once, twice, or at most, a finite number of times, or according to a periodic regime. Moreover, our theoretical work suggests how IPM strategies could be used to alter the levels of the ET in the farmers' favour.  相似文献

The linear noise approximation is a useful method for stochastic noise evaluations in genetic regulatory networks, where the covariance equation described as a Lyapunov equation plays a central role. We discuss the linear noise approximation method for evaluations of an intrinsic noise in autonomously oscillatory genetic networks; in such oscillatory networks, the covariance equation becomes a periodic differential equation that provides generally an unbounded covariance matrix, so that the standard method of noise evaluation based on the covariance matrix cannot be adopted directly. In this paper, we develop a new method of noise evaluation in oscillatory genetic networks; first, we investigate structural properties, e.g., orbital stability and periodicity, of the solutions to the covariance equation given as a periodic Lyapunov differential equation by using the Floquet-Lyapunov theory, and propose a global measure for evaluating stochastic amplitude fluctuations on the periodic trajectory; we also derive an evaluation formula for the period fluctuation. Finally, we apply our method to a model of circadian oscillations based on negative auto-regulation of gene expression, and show validity of our method by comparing the evaluation results with stochastic simulations.  相似文献
