Ultrastructural examination of grooved-peg (GP) sensilla on the antenna of fifth instar Triatoma infestans nymphs by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy reveal that they are 8–18 μm long with a diameter of about 2–2.8 μm at the non-articulated base. Some pegs have a terminal pore. These double-walled wall-pore (dw-wp) sensilla have an outer cuticular wall with 13–18 longitudinal grooves at the distal part of the peg. Groove channels are present at the bottom of the grooves from which radial spoke channels lead into the inner sensillum-lymph cavity. A dendrite sheath connects the tip of the thecogen cell to the inner cuticular wall thus forming separated outer and inner sensillum-lymph cavities. Four or five bipolar receptor cells are ensheathed successively within the GP sensilla by the thecogen cell, trichogen and tormogen cells. The inner dendritic segments of each sensory cell give rise at the ciliary constriction to an unbranched outer dendritic segment which can reach the tip of the sensillum.Electrophysiological recordings from the GP sensilla indicate that they house NH3, short-chain carboxylic acid and short-chain aliphatic amine receptor cells and can be divided into three functional sub-types (GP 1–3). All GP sensilla carry a receptor cell excited by aliphatic amines, such as isobutylamine, a compound associated with vertebrate odour. GP type 1 and 2 sensilla house, in addition, an NH3-excited cell whereas the type 2 sensilla also contains a short-chain carboxylic acid receptor. No cell particularly sensitive to either NH3 or carboxylic acids was found in the grooved-peg type 3 sensilla. GP types 1, 2 and 3 represent ca. 36, 10 and 43% of the GP sensilla, respectively, whereas the remaining 11% contain receptor cells that manifest normal spontaneous activity but do not respond to any of the afore mentioned stimuli. 相似文献

The ultrastructure of the early stages of carposporophyte development in the marine red algaChondria tenuissima has been studied. The diploid carposporophyte grows on the gametophyte. Apical gonimoblast cells develop into diploid carpospores.
The basal gonimoblast cells cease to divide and undergo considerable cytoplasmic changes before they become incorporated into
the expanding fusion cell. Nucleus and plastids degenerate gradually, while mitochondria remain intact. The smooth endoplasmic
reticulum becomes prominent, it seems to produce small vesicles with electron dense contents. Simultaneously, numerous mucilage
sacs are formed, presumably from dilating ER cisternae. The contents of the mucilage sacs are secreted by exocytosis. The
pit connections between gonimoblast cells flare out. They remain as isolated bodies without connection to a wall after fusion.
Secondary pit connections occur between vegetative gametophyte cells and sterile carposporophyte cells. There are three different
morphological types of pit connections. 相似文献

Summary The turnip moth Agrotis segetum possesses seven different types of sensilla: four single-walled (SW), one double-walled (DW), one terminal-pore (TP), and one poreless sensilla (NP).The SW 1 and SW 2 sensilla have the same external appearance, being long and slender, but differ in the branching pattern of the sensory processes: unbranched and branched in SW 1 and SW 2, respectively. The SW 3 sensilla are shorter, sickle-shaped, and contain a large number of branches from the sensory processes. These three sensillar types are innervated by 2–3 sensory cells. The SW 4 sensilla are raisin-shaped and possess three profusely branched sensory processes. The DW sensilla are short and have apical slit-like pores. This sensillar type has 5–6 sensory processes. The TP sensilla possess five sensory processes, one of them terminates basally in a tubular body, the others in the apical part of the long cuticular bristle. The NP sensilla are stout and have apical conelike structures. Two of the sensory processes terminate in the apical part, the third proximally. The third sensory process has a lamellar pattern. The fine structure indicates the following functions: SW and DW sensilla: chemoreception; TP sensillum: chemoreception and mechanoreception; NP sensillum: thermoreception and hygroreception.Supported by joint grants from the Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Research, the Swedish Natural Science Research Council, and the Swedish Council for Forestry and Agricultural Research 相似文献

The antennae of Lepidoptera Neopseustidae were examined with the scanning electron microscope. The studied species, Nematocentropus cfr. omeiensis, Neopseustis meyricki, Synempora andesae, Apoplania valdiviana and Apoplania penai possess nine types of antennal flagellum sensilla: multiporous large sensilla basiconica, multiporous thin sensilla basiconica, multiporous small sensilla basiconica, multiporous sensilla trichodea, multiporous sensilla coeloconica; uniporous sensilla chaetica; aporous sensilla chaetica, aporous stylus-shaped sensilla chaetica, aporous sensilla styloconica. The multiporous sensillum type here termed “multiporous large sensillum basiconicum” is unknown from other Lepidoptera and probably constitutes an autapomorphy of the family Neopseustidae. This sensillum type is remarkable by having a single base in female Apoplania and Synempora while in male Apoplania it has a bifid or trifid base, and in male Synempora it is composed of two or three incompletely separated hairs. This may be the first recorded example of a sexually dimorphic lepidopteran sensillum type. The stylus-shaped sensillum chaeticum is a primitive type which occurs only in some lower Lepidoptera. 相似文献

Summary There is a considerable sexual dimorphism as regards the development of the antenna inNeodiprion sertifer. In the male this is manifested in a larger antennal surface area and the possession of a great number of long single-walled sensilla (SW 1), which are located on the antennal branches. In the female the antennal branches are vestigial, and the single-walled sensilla, of a second type (SW 2), are shorter and present in lower numbers. Both sexes have in addition four types of sensilla in common:viz. a third type of single-walled sensilla (SW 3), terminal pore sensilla, double-walled sensilla, and poreless sensilla. These four sensillar types are characterized not only by their external appearance but also by their internal morphology. Especially the cells enveloping the sensory cells vary in number and appearance.Supported by joint grants from the Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Research, the Swedish Natural Science Research Council, and the Swedish Council for Forestry and Agricultural Research. 相似文献

The distribution, fine structure and function of the sensilla present on the antennal club of Rhynchophorus palmarum were studied. No sex dimorphism was observed. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy showed five types of hair-like structures, four of which were evenly distributed on the antennal club. Two types of hair (IV and V) showed wall pores, a characteristic of olfactory sensilla. The antenna numbers 11,190 +/- 3040 type IV and 7360 +/- 1500 type V hairs. Using single sensillum recording, we identified 17 types of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) on the basis of their responses to pheromone and host plant odors, triggering synergic behavioral responses. We characterized highly specific and sensitive ORNs tuned to the aggregation pheromone (18% ORNs; 0.01-1 ng response threshold) and to host plant odors such as ethyl acetate, ethanol, acetoin and guaiacol (10% ORNs; 1-10 ng response threshold). Eleven percent of the ORNs were more generalist, responding to several odors with low sensitivity. Nine percent of the ORNs showed a complex pattern of responses, being co-activated by the pheromone and plant odors. This suggests an interaction at the sensory neuron level between pheromone and plant odors, triggering synergic behavioral responses. 相似文献

The external and internal structures of adult Neomysis integer mandibles were studied using light and electron microscopy with special reference to the lacinia mobilis, a highly specialized appendage on the gnathal edge of many crustaceans. The right and left lacinia mobilis are equipped with ciliary primary sensory cells revealing that both laciniae are also mechanosensory organs in addition to their mechanical function during mastication. A detailed character analyses indicated that the right lacinia is probably a highly derived sensory seta, whereas two alternative interpretations are considered for the left lacinia; it could be a sensillar appendage equipped with two mechanosensory units, or it could be a movable appendage of the incisor process containing two sensilla deprived of external appendages. The ecdysis of the lacinia mobilis corresponds very well to type I sensillar ecdysis, suggesting classification as a sensillar appendage. These features support a possible homology of the right lacinia mobilis in Peracarida and Decapoda, tracing them to an origin as a member of the setal row. Whether the left lacinia mobilis is a sensillum or an appendage with sensilla cannot be resolved presently. 相似文献

Two types of nerve cell could be distinguished ultrastructurally in the central nervous system of Geocentrophora baltica (Prorhynchida, Lecithoepitheliata). Both show invaginations in the plasma membrane, but they differ in the character of the cytoplasm (light or densely stained) and the distribution of the neuronal vesicles (evenly or in groups). Different kinds of vesicles and neuronal release sites are observed. Special features of the synapses are pronounced local thickenings of the presynaptic membrane connected to paramembranous densities. In G. baltica and five endemic Geocentrophora spp. from Lake Baikal six types of surface sensillum were observed at the epidermal surface: 1. those with a long thin rootlet; 2. a short, balloon-shaped cilium with an aberrant axoneme and a reduced rootlet; 3. a rootlet branching into many striated bundles; 4. a thick rootlet; 5. a reduced rootlet and numerous neurotubules;and 6. collared sensilla each with one cilium in a deep pit surrounded by a collar of 11 to 12 microvilli. The variable number of microvilli in the collared sensillum is considered plesiomorphic relative to the stable number of eight microvilli known in sensilla of the Prolecithophora, Proseriata, and Rhabdocoela. The ultrastructure of the collar sensillum indicates that the Lecithoepitheliata is only distantly related to the Prolecithophora and higher turbellarians. 相似文献

Ricinuleids are one of the least investigated groups of Arachnida. In particular, knowledge of their ultrastructure is poor. Observations of the distal tarsomeres of ricinuleids show differences in their shape and equipment of surface structures. Legs I and II are used by the Ricinulei to explore their surroundings with tentative movements. The tarsomeres of these legs show similarities in shape and surface structures that distinguish them from those of legs III and IV. In this study, 11 different structures of the tarsomere surfaces of two cave-dwelling species, Pseudocellus pearsei and P. boneti from México, were investigated for the first time with scanning and transmission electron microscopy and discussed regarding their possible function: 1) a single treelike ramifying seta resembles a no pore single-walled (np-sw) sensillum; 2) setae occurring in a small number and possessing a bipartite shaft represent terminal pore single-walled (tp-sw) sensilla. The surface of the proximal half of the shaft shows small branches. The distal half has a smooth surface; 3) long setae with conspicuous longitudinal lamellae show characteristics of chemoreceptive wall pore single-walled (wp-sw) sensilla; 4) frequent small wp-sw sensilla with flat and irregular lamellae; 5) very short wp-sw sensilla occurring solitary or in groups; 6) a few short setae with smooth surface correspond to wp-sw sensilla; 7) a single short clubbed seta articulating in a flat pit is considered to be a np-sw sensillum; 8) common long setae with a pointed tip show characteristics of mechanoreceptive np-sw sensilla; 9) ventral setae with adhesive and mechanosensory function are accompanied by multicellular "class III" glands; 10) slit organs with mechanoreceptive function; and 11) dome-like tubercles with no indication of sensorial function. Several of these sensilla form a sensory field on the dorsofrontal surface which is particularly pronounced on the distal tarsomeres of legs I and II. 相似文献

The effect of insect age on the neural responsiveness of gustatory sensilla was investigated. Electrophysiological recordings
were obtained from type A and type D sensilla on the pro- and meso-thoracic tarsi, and from sensilla on the labellum of the
turnip root fly,Delia floralis (Fallen) in response to potassium chloride, sucrose and sinigrin. The age of the fly did have an effect on the numbers of
sensilla responding to the test stimuli and on the magnitude of the response, but there was no consistent pattern in these
effects among sensilla. The labellar sensilla were more responsive to sucrose than the tarsal sensilla and the proportion
of flies whose labellar sensilla responded to sucrose was initially low, but increased after day 2 of adult life. In contrast,
the number of flies whose tarsal sensilla responded to stimulation with sucrose was initially high and decreased as the flies
aged. There was a similar decline in the proportion of tarsal sensilla responding to potassium chloride. Neither the proportion
of flies whose tarsal sensilla responded to sinigrin nor the magnitude of the response was influenced by the age of the fly.
These finding are discussed in relation to the feeding and host selection behaviour of the fly. 相似文献

The neurophysiology and antennal lobe projections of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) within sexually isomorphic short trichoid sensilla of male Heliothis virescens (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) were investigated using cut-sensillum recording and cobalt-lysine staining. A total of 202 sensilla were sorted into 14 possible sensillar categories based on odor responses and physiology of ORNs within. Seventy-two percent of the sensilla identified contained ORNs stimulated by conspecific odors. In addition, a large number of ORNs were specifically sensitive to ß-caryophyllene, a plant-derived volatile (N = 41). Axons originating from ORNs associated with individual sensilla were stained with cobalt lysine (N = 67) and traced to individual glomeruli in the antennal lobe. ORNs with responses to female sex pheromone components exhibited similar axonal projections as those previously described from ORNs in long sensilla trichodea in male H. virescens. Antennal lobe axonal arborizations of ORNs sensitive to hairpencil components were also located in glomeruli near the base of the antennal nerve, whilst those sensitive to plant odorants projected to more medial glomeruli. Comparisons with ORNs described from female H. virescens supports the notion that glomeruli at the base of the antennal nerve are associated with conspecific and interspecific odorants, whereas those located medially are associated with plant volatiles. 相似文献

One pair of gustatory sensilla was found on the epipharynx ofBombyx mori larvae, and some morphological and electrophysiological characteristics of the epipharyngeal sensilla were investigated.
They are sensilla coeloconica composed of a small papilla with a pore at the tip and a swelling of cuticle encircling the
papilla. Three bipolar neurons innervate each sensillum. One neuron is an inositol receptor which responds to inositol only.
Another cell responds with action potentials of relatively large amplitude to some feeding deterrent substances, such as strychnine
nitrate. The thresholds of these cells for inositol and strychnine nitrate are approximately 10−4 M and 10−7 M, respectively. At least two kinds of spikes can be observed when these sensilla are stimulated with some salts and acids.
Dose-response relationships and time courses of responses to inositol and strychnine nitrate were also examined in this study. 相似文献

The sensilla type, number and distribution in male and female adults of Carabus elysii Thomson, 1856 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that there are seven categories and 12 types of sensilla in C. elysii adults: three types of S.Ch, three types of S.T, two types of S.B and one each of B.B, S.Co, S.Ca and S.Cam. There is no difference between male and female in the types of sensilla. Apart from the significant difference in the number and distribution of S.B.2, S.Co and S.Ca between male dorsal and ventral surfaces, there are no significant differences between male and female antennae. In general, the number of sensilla in females is larger than that in males. The results provide a basic reference for future ultrastructure, electrophysiological, and comparative behavioral studies of Carabus species. 相似文献

The distribution of odorant-binding proteins among olfactory sensilla of three moth species was studied by immuno-electron microscopy. Two polyclonal antisera were used in a post-embedding labelling protocol on sections of cryo-substituted antennae. The first was directed against the pheromone-binding protein (PBP) of Antheraea polyphemus, the second against the general odorant-binding protein (GOBP) of the same species. Immunoblots showed that these antisera were highly specific; both antisera did, however, cross-react with related proteins in the related species A. pernyi, and in the bombycid moth B. mori. PBP and GOBP were localized only in olfactory sensilla trichodea and sensilla basiconica, the principal site being the sensillum lymph surrounding the sensory dendrites. In the males of all three species, the pheromone-sensitive long sensilla trichodea exclusively contained PBP. the majority of the sensilla basiconica in both sexes in these species contained GOBP; these sensilla are known to respond to plant and other general odours. Some sensilla were not labelled by either antiserum; presumably, these held an odorantbinding protein of a different subfamily. Never were PBP and GOBP co-localized in the same sensillum. Two observations deserve special attention: (1) PBP was also found in a few sensilla in females, and (2) in B. mori, where the long sensilla trichodea have a different functional specificity in males (pheromone) and females (plant odours), the expression of the odorant-binding protein (males: PBP; females: GOBP) is similarly different. The distinct and complex distribution pattern of odorant-binding proteins supports the notion that these proteins participate in stimulus recognition.Dedicated to Professor Ya.A. Vinnikov on the occasion of his 85. birthdayThis work was partly supported by DFG grant ste 501/3-1. 相似文献

Sensilla lining the inner walls of the sacculus on the third antennal segment of Drosophila melanogaster were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. The sacculus consists of three chambers: I, II and III. Inside each chamber morphologically distinct groups of sensilla having inflexible sockets were observed. Chamber I contains no-pore sensilla basiconica (np-SB). The lumen of all np-SB are innervated by two neurons, both resembling hygroreceptors. However, a few np-SB contain one additional neuron, presumed to be thermoreceptive. Chamber II houses no-pore sensilla coeloconica (np-SC). All np-SC are innervated by three neurons. The outer dendritic segments of two of these neurons fit tightly to the wall of the lumen and resemble hygroreceptor neurons. A third, more electron-dense sensory neuron, terminates at the base of the sensillum and resembles a thermoreceptor cell. Chamber III of the sacculus is divided into ventral and dorsal compartments, each housing morphologically distinct grooved sensilla (GS). The ventral compartment contains thick GS1, and the dorsal compartment has slender sensilla GS2. Ultrastructurally, both GS1 and GS2 are doublewalled sensilla with a longitudinal slit-channel system and are innervated by two neurons. The dendritic outer segment of one ofthe two neurons innervates the lumen of the GS and branches. On morphological criteria, we infer this neuron to be olfactory. The other sensory neuron is probably thermoreceptive. Thus, the sacculus in Drosophila has sensilla that are predominantly involved in hygroreception, thermoreception, and olfaction. We have traced the sensory projections of the neurons innervating the sacculus sensilla of chamber III using cobaltous lysine or ethanolic cobalt (II) chloride. The fibres project to the antennal lobes, and at least four glomeruli (VM3, DA3 and DL2-3) are projection areas of sensory neurons from these sensilla. glomerulus DL2 is a common target for the afferent fibres of the surface sensilla coeloconica and GS, whereas the VM3, DA3 and DL3 glomeruli receive sensory fibres only from the GS. 相似文献

Sensillae on the antennae of the Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata are described using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy and compared with SEM observations of antennal
sensilla inL. haldemani andL. texana. In all the three species, 13 distinct sensillar types were identified with a higher density of sensilla in the more polyphagous
species,L. decemlineata than in the moderately host specificL. haldemani and the highly host specificL. texana. Cuticular specializations and the predominance of olfactory sensilla are discussed in relation to host specificity in the
three species. 相似文献
