Motalaotte, S. & Bouwman, H. 2000. Pesticide levels in stork and spoonbill eggs from the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Ostrich 71 (1&2):344.

Ecotourism in the Okavango Delta is one of the major sources of foreign revenue for the Republic of Botswana. Promoting this region is therefore vital to sustainable development. One of the concerns was the past use of organochlorine pesticides to combat tsetse fly. This study looked at the levels and possible risk this use poses to Marabou storks and African Spoonbills, as well as some other birds, from this region. One particular breeding colony also experienced a decline in breeding success, the cause of which is unknown. DDE was present in almost all the eggs and blood sampled, while DDD, DDT and Dieldrin were also found in many. These pesticides are therefore present in the food chain and should be closely monitored to determine any temporal trends.  相似文献

Anderson, M.D. 2000. Raptor conservation in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Ostrich 71 (1 & 2): 25–32.

The semi-arid Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province in South Africa. One of the main economic activities is sheep farming, and the properties are generally very large (>5 000 ha). A heterogeneous environment results in many habitats for a wide diversity of raptors. Fifty-one different species have been recorded, of which 37 are resident, 21 are common, and eight species are listed in the South African Red Data Book—Birds. As habitat degradation is limited, besides the areas immediately adjacent to the perennial rivers, raptors are still commonly encountered in many areas. Conflict with small-stock farming, however, results in some birds being inadvertently or directly persecuted each year. Two farmer questionnaire postal surveys (1976 and 1992) indicated a decrease in range and abundance of certain scavenging species, such as the Tawny Eagle. The more recent survey also indicated that most stock mortalities occurred in the mountainous areas, with the Black Eagle being the apparent culprit. In the Northern Cape there are both positive and negative anthropogenic effects on raptors. For example, 14 species have been recorded breeding on man-made structures, while 18 species have been documented to drown in farm reservoirs. Through the activities of the Raptor Conservation Group, the Northern Cape Nature Conservation Service and the Northern Cape Raptor Conservation Forum various threats are being addressed. Raptor conservation activities include: monitoring of raptor breeding populations, road censuses, farmer extension, establishment of raptor conservancies, rehabilitation of injured raptors, issuing of certificates to land-owners who have breeding raptors on their properties, presentation of the annual Gariep Raptor Conservationist Award, production and distribution of raptor pamphlets and booklets, modification of farm reservoirs to prevent raptor drownings, modification of powerlines to prevent electrocutions, and establishment of “vulture restaurants”. Through these efforts, the status of many raptor species is improving and species such as the Bateleur and Lappet-faced Vulture are becoming increasingly common.  相似文献

Gaschromatography was used to establish the presence of quantifiable residues of 14 persistent chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutants in whole blood, clotted blood, heart, kidney, liver and muscle samples obtained from individual African whitebacked (Pseudogyps africanus), Cape griffon (Gyps coprotheres) and Lappetfaced (Torgos tracheliotos) vultures from different localities in South Africa. The levels of pesticides measured in whole blood samples of live specimens were compared between nestlings from two natural breeding colonies, adults from a wildlife area and birds held in captivity. Statistically significant (P<0.05) differences between populations were detected in geometric means calculated for γ-BHC (lindane), α(cis)-chlordane and α-endosulfan. Five of the organochlorine contaminants displayed significant variations between concentrations detected in the clotted blood, organs and muscles excised from vulture carcasses. This includes residues of γ-BHC, α-chlordane, dieldrin, β-endosulfan and heptachlor epoxide. Values of the respective biocides measured in vulture samples were generally low in comparison to results documented for a number of avian species. Although no threat is posed by any of the organochloride pesticides, continual monitoring of especially breeding colonies is recommended. Furthermore, the suitability of African whitebacked vulture nestlings as basic bioindicators is highly advocated.  相似文献

Four species of the genus Amphibiophilus Skrjabin, 1916 from pyxycephalid frogs in southern and central Africa are currently recognised as valid. Several specimens of Amphibiophilus were found in material from the common river frog, Amietia delalandii (Duméril & Bibron) (Amphibia: Pyxicephalidae), collected in Potchefstroom (North-West Province, South Africa). These specimens clearly differ from all previously known species by the shape of the distal end of the spicule, the shape of the gubernaculum and the structure of the synlophe. They are, thus, considered as a new species, Amphibiophilus mooiensis. As all other species in the family Amphibiophilidae Durette-Desset & Chabaud, 1981, A. mooiensis n. sp. possesses a number of archaic characters, such as a buccal capsule with a well-developed dorsal oesophageal tooth, six inner labial papillae, six outer labial papillae and four cephalic papillae. Molecular data (cox1 and ITS-28S rDNA sequences) are provided and host and geographical specificity are discussed.  相似文献

Human molars from travertine deposits of Witkrans Cave (Gaap Escarpment, northern Cape Province, South Africa) are described. The Witkrans molars were discovered in direct association with later Pleistocene faunal remains and a sample of Middle Stone Age artifacts (Peabody, 1954; Clark, 1971; Sampson, 1974; Klein, 1984; Volman, 1984). The morphology and dimensions of the Witkrans molars resemble remains from other localities of similar age in southern Africa (Singer & Wymer, 1982; Grine & Klein, 1985; Grine et al., 1991; Rightmire & Deacon 1991) but exhibit differences from later Pleistocene occurrences in northern Africa (McBurney et al. 1953; Vallois & Roche, 1958; Ennouchi, 1969; Hublin & Tillier, 1981). These results offer further support for the existence of later Pleistocene human populations south of the Sahara which were distinct from contemporaneous peoples of Mediterranean Africa (Howell, 1978; Brauer, 1984; Rightmire, 1984; Klein 1992).  相似文献

Crawford, R.J.M., Dyer, B.M. & Upfold, L. 1999. Seasonal pattern of breeding by Cape and Crowned Cormorants off western South Africa. Ostrich 70(3&4): 193–195.

At Bird Island, Lambert's Bay, and Malgas Island, South Africa, small numbers of Cape Cormorants Phalacrocorax capensis may breed at any time of the year, but the main breeding season is from September to February. At Malgas Island, Crowned Cormorants P. coronatus may also breed throughout the year, but mostly from December to March. Counts of the breeding population of Cape Cormorants should be undertaken between October and December, and of Crowned Cormorants in January or February.  相似文献

Cooper, J., Brooke, R.K., Cyrus, D.P., Martin, A.P., Taylor, R.H. & Williams, A.J. 1992. Distribution, population size and conservation of the Caspian Tern Sterna caspia in southern Africa. Ostrich 63: 58–67.

The Caspian Tern Sterna caspia occurs along the whole southern African coastline and on large river systems and water bodies away from the coast. A total of 28 definite breeding localities has been recorded in southern Africa. Breeding has occurred recently at at least 14 coastal localities between Swakopmund, Namibia, and Lake St Lucia, Natal, South Africa. Inland breeding has been recorded in recent years at Sua Pan, Botswana and Kalkfonteindam, Orange Free State, South Africa. Based on censuses conducted between 1980 and 1991, the southern African breeding population is estimated to be of the order of 500 pairs, 91% of which breed coastally and 89% breed on islands. Up to 290 pairs (58%) bred at Lake St Lucia. Seventyone per cent of the 1980–1991 breeding population falls within eight nature reserves. Conservation of the Caspian Tern in southern Africa requires protection at breeding localities, including commercial salt and soda ash extraction works, against the effects of changing water levels, human disturbance and predation. Pesticide levels of addled and abandoned eggs should be measured at selected breeding localities.  相似文献

Steele, W.K. & Hockey, P.A.R. 1990. Population size, distribution and dispersal of Kelp Gulls in the southwestern Cape, South Africa. Ostrich 61:97-106.

There are indications that the Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus population of the southwestern Cape Province, South Africa, is increasing. It is proposed that decreased post-fledging mortality due to supplementary food from man's activities, at sites such as fishing harbours and refuse dumps, is likely to be the main cause of this population increase. Kelp Gulls aggregate, and juveniles (first-year birds) are disproportionately abundant, at sites where supplementary food is available. Juvenile dispersal from the two largest breeding colonies, 38 km apart, is in opposite directions.  相似文献

Pine voles (Microtus pinetorum) were collected from pesticide-treated orchards in New York (USA) and fed to three captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius) for 60 days to evaluate potential hazards from soil-borne persistent insecticides. Three control kestrels were fed uncontaminated laboratory mice (Mus musculus). The pine voles contained an average of 38 ppm lead, 48 ppm DDE and 1.2 ppm dieldrin (wet weight). The kestrels accumulated sublethal amounts of lead (1 ppm lead wet weight) in their livers. In contrast, DDE and dieldrin accumulated in the tissues and brains of kestrels to toxicologically significant concentrations. Control kestrels remained healthy and accumulated insignificant concentrations of the contaminants. The results indicated raptors may not be significantly at risk from lead residues in soil and biota following field applications of lead arsenate. However, sublethal effects may be expected from the level of contamination by organochlorine pesticides.  相似文献

Sediment from 9 lakes and lagoons in 3 North African countries was analysed for a suite of organochlorine insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Residues of -HCH and pp-DDE were detected in most cores, and radiometric dating of the sediment enabled time profiles to be constructed which are indicative of recent use of the insecticide lindane and previous use of the insecticide DDT in the region. Absolute concentrations of these pesticides were relatively low compared to reported values for other world-wide locations, but exceeded recommended Canadian and Dutch environmental quality standards at several sites. Maximum fluxes of -HCH and pp-DDE (190 and 95 g m–2 yr–1, respectively) were relatively high and comparable to some sediments in North America and the United Kingdom. Other organochlorine pesticides including dieldrin were detected at low levels in some samples. Selected PCB congeners were detected at trace levels at 2 sites only, indicating low levels of industrial contamination at the sampling locations. Tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world have been suggested to be contemporary sources of globally distributed organochlorine contaminants. These data are discussed with respect to this hypothesis.  相似文献

BackgroundHigh rates of patient attrition from care between HIV testing and antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation have been documented in sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to persistently low CD4 cell counts at treatment initiation. One reason for this is that starting ART in many countries is a lengthy and burdensome process, imposing long waits and multiple clinic visits on patients. We estimated the effect on uptake of ART and viral suppression of an accelerated initiation algorithm that allowed treatment-eligible patients to be dispensed their first supply of antiretroviral medications on the day of their first HIV-related clinic visit.ConclusionsOffering single-visit ART initiation to adult patients in South Africa increased uptake of ART by 36% and viral suppression by 26%. This intervention should be considered for adoption in the public sector in Africa.

Bennun, L. & Nasirwa, O. 2000. Trends in waterbird numbers in the southern Rift Valley of Kenya. Ostrich 71 (1 & 2): 220–226.

Each January since 1991, volunteer teams have counted waterbirds at major wetlands in the southern Kenyan Rift Valley. There has been consistent coverage at Lakes Naivasha, Elmenteita, Nakuru and (since 1992) Bogoria. These lakes are shallow and, except for Bogoria, fluctuate greatly in extent; all but Naivasha are saline. Lake levels were moderately high in 1991–1993 but have been generally low since. Flamingo totals for the three saline lakes combined were more than one million from 1992–1994, but roughly halved each year since then. Greater Flamingos Phoenicopterus ruber made up between 0.7 and 4.1% of total flamingo numbers; other waterbirds made up between 2.7 and 10.2% of the overall total. Lakes Naivasha, Elmenteita and Nakuru together hold most of the non-flamingo waterbirds in the southern Rift; to compare trends for other species, we pooled totals for these sites. Significant, or near-significant, declines were evident for grebes, pelicans, cormorants, storks, gulls, rallids, kingfishers, terns and raptors. No group showed an overall increasing trend. At Dandora, a smaller site with stable water levels, these groups showed large annual fluctuations but no obvious declines. In most waterbird groups where numbers decreased, the probable cause was sustained low lake levels at Lake Nakuru; numbers at Lake Naivasha remained stable. Exceptions were rallids, kingfishers and raptors, where numbers steadily declined at Naivasha. There is a need to investigate local environmental causes of these changes for kingfishers and raptors, and to assess possible loss of breeding sites for rallids.  相似文献

This article focusses on the geographical distribution and habitats of Bulinus natalensis, as reflected by the samples taken from 244 collection sites on record in the database of the National Freshwater Snail Collection (NFSC) at the Potchefstroom campus of the North-West University. This snail species is experimentally susceptible to Schistosoma haematobium and is incriminated in the natural transmission of S. margrebowiei, S. bovis and Calicophoron microbothrium elsewhere in Africa. The 78 different loci (1/16 degree squares) on record reflect a geographical distribution that is largely limited to the KwaZulu-Natal Province. Details of each habitat as described by collectors during surveys, as well as altitude and mean annual air temperature and rainfall for each locality, were processed and chi-squared and effect size values calculated. A decision tree constructed from all the available data indicated that temperature and altitude, followed by the type of water body, seemed to be the more important factors that significantly influenced the distribution of this species in South Africa. The possible role of this species as intermediate host of economically important helminth species is briefly examined. The need to clarify its relationships with B. tropicus and B. depressus, and to update the geographical distribution in South Africa, is also emphasised.  相似文献

During 2006 to 2008, the water, sediment and fish in Albasini Dam, used as a reference site outside a DDT-sprayed area, had been found to be as affected as those in the nearby DDT-sprayed area were. Accordingly, the aim of the current study, conducted in 2014, was to determine the health status of fish from Albasini Dam by means of a histology-based fish health assessment protocol. High levels of nitrates, as well as the organochlorine pesticides aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane and methoxychlor, were found in the water. Fish muscle tissue contained pesticides, including methoxychlor. A semi-quantitative histological assessment on Clarias gariepinus, Coptodon rendalli and Oreochromis mossambicus showed diverse histopathology in selected target organs, with the gills being most affected. Notably, the testis tissue of one C. rendalli was filled with eosinophilic liquid, characteristic of necrosis. Microscopic intersex was found in two of the nine O. mossambicus sampled. This is the second time that intersex as microscopic testicular oocytes has been reported in O. mossambicus in South Africa. This finding perhaps indicates that reproduction may be compromised and this will be investigated further. The presence of intersex and other histopathology in organs could be early warning signs of the declining water quality in this dam.  相似文献

Unlike smaller raptors, which can readily use flapping flight, large raptors are mainly restricted to soaring flight due to energetic constraints. Soaring comprises of two main strategies: thermal and orographic soaring. These soaring strategies are driven by discrete uplift sources determined by the underlying topography and meteorological conditions in an area. High‐resolution GPS tracking of raptor flight allows the identification of these flight strategies and interpretation of the spatiotemporal occurrence of thermal and orographic soaring. In this study, we develop methods to identify soaring flight behaviors from high‐resolution GPS tracking data of Verreaux’s eagle Aquila verreauxii and analyze these data to understand the conditions that promote the use of thermal and orographic soaring. We use these findings to predict the use of soaring flight both spatially (across the landscape) and temporally (throughout the year) in two topographically contrasting regions in South Africa. We found that topography is important in determining the occurrence of soaring flight and that thermal soaring occurs in relatively flat areas which are likely to have good thermal uplift availability. The predicted use of orographic soaring was predominately determined by terrain slope. Contrary to our expectations, the topography and meteorology of eagle territories in the Sandveld promoted the use of soaring flight to a greater extent than in territories in the more mountainous Cederberg region. Spatiotemporal mapping of predicted flight behaviors can broaden our understanding of how large raptors like the Verreaux’s eagle use their habitat and how that links to energetics (as the preferential use of areas that maximize net energy gain is expected), reproductive success, and ultimately population dynamics. Understanding the fine‐scale landscape use and environmental drivers of raptor flight can also help to predict and mitigate potential detrimental effects of anthropogenic developments, such as mortality via collision with wind turbines.  相似文献

An absolute dating technique based on the build-up and decay of 26Al and 10Be in the mineral quartz provides crucial evidence regarding early Acheulean hominid distribution in South Africa. Cosmogenic nuclide burial dating of an ancient alluvial deposit of the Vaal River (Rietputs Formation) in the western interior of South Africa shows that coarse gravel and sand aggradation there occurred ca 1.57 ± 0.22 Ma, with individual ages of samples ranging from 1.89 ± 0.19 to 1.34 ± 0.22 Ma. This was followed by aggradation of laminated and cross-bedded fine alluvium at ca 1.26 ± 0.10 Ma. The Rietputs Formation provides an ideal situation for the use of the cosmogenic nuclide burial dating method, as samples could be obtained from deep mining pits at depths ranging from 7 to 16 meters. Individual dates provide only a minimum age for the stone tool technology preserved within the deposits. Each assemblage represents a time averaged collection. Bifacial tools distributed throughout the coarse gravel and sand unit can be assigned to an early phase of the Acheulean. This is the first absolute radiometric dated evidence for early Acheulean artefacts in South Africa that have been found outside of the early hominid sites of the Gauteng Province. These absolute dates also indicate that handaxe-using hominids inhabited southern Africa as early as their counterparts in East Africa. The simultaneous appearance of the Acheulean in different parts of the continent implies relatively rapid technology development and the widespread use of large cutting tools in the African continent by ca 1.6 Ma.  相似文献

Williams, A. J., Steele, W. K., Cooper, J. & Crawford, R. J. M. 1990. Distribution, population size and conservation of Hartlaub's Gull Lorus hurtlaubii. Ostrich 61: 66–76.

Hartlaub's Gull Larus hartlaubii is endemic to southern Africa, where it breeds between Swakopmund, Namibia and Dyer Island, southwestern Cape Province, South Africa. The species has been re breeding at 48 localities within this range. Between 1984 and 1989 an estimated 12000 pain brered at 31 localities. Twenty-eet percent of the population breeds at Robben Island off the Cape Peninsula, sQuth Africa. Hartlaub's Gull frequently has low breeding success and is considered endangered in Narmbia, where 12% of the poulation occurs. However, the population is increaslng around the urbanmd Cape Peninsula where HartLub's Gull has the potential to become a pest species.  相似文献

Whittington, P.A., Hofmeyr, J.H. & Cooper, J. 1996. Establishment, growth and conservation of a mainland colony of Jackass Penguins Spheniscus demersus at Stony Point, Betty's Bay, South Africa. Ostrich 67: 144–150.

Following the discovery of a single pair of Jackass Penguins Spheniscus demersus nesting on the mainland at Stony Point, Western Cape Province, South Africa (34 22S 18 53E) in 1982, a colony developed and has since been regularly monitored. Numbers of nests increased to 35 in 1986, until a leopard Panthera pardus severely reduced the size of the colony. Numbers subsequently rose again to a total of 139 nests in 1990, but fell to 57 in 1993. This decrease was probably due to predation by mammals. Following the use of a trap and translocation of the animals caught, the colony increased again in 1995 and 1996. Productivity of the colony was insufficient for it to be self-sustaining, and it therefore presently represents a population sink.  相似文献
