The gas exchange characteristics are reported for Amaranthus tricolor, a C4 vegetable amaranth of southeastern Asia. Maximum photosynthetic capacity was 48.3±1.0μmol CO2 m?2s?1 and the temperature optimum was 35°C. The calculated intercellular CO2 concentration at this leaf temperature and an incident photon flux (400–700 mm) of 2 mmol m?2s?1 averaged 208±14 μl l?1, abnormally high for a C4 species. The photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 concentration, and leaf conductance all decreased with an increase in water vapor pressure deficit. However, the decrease in leaf conductance which resulted in a decrease in intercellular CO2 concentration accounted for only one fourth of the observed decrease in photosynthetic rate as water vapor pressure deficit was increased. Subsequent measurements indicated that the depence of net photosynthesis on intercellular CO2 concetration changed with water vapor pressure deficit.  相似文献

Aquaporins seem essential for the regulation of plant water status and expenses. Richter-110 is a Vitis hybrid (Vitis berlandieri × rupestris) reputed to be strongly drought-tolerant. Three irrigation treatments were established in Richter-110 plants growing outdoors defined by the resulting maximum stomatal conductance (g s), and ensuring water stress situations not severe enough as to stop photosynthesis and growth: well-watered plants (g s about 250 mmol H2O m−2 s−1), moderate water stress (g s about 150 mmol H2O m−2 s−1) and severe water stress (g s about 50 mmol H2O m−2 s−1). Plants under water stress were kept at constant water availability for 7 days to check for possible acclimation. Finally, plants were re-watered, and allowed to recover, for 3 days. Stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, xylem abscisic acid (ABA) content and root and stem hydraulic conductivity were determined. The relative amounts of expression of mRNA encoding seven putative aquaporins were determined in roots and leaves by RT-PCR. The decrease in stomatal conductance with moderate and severe water stress was associated with increasing ABA contents, but not with the leaf water potential and hydraulic conductivities, which remained unchanged during the entire experiment. Aquaporin gene expression varied depending on which aquaporin, water stress level and the plant organ. We suggest that aquaporin expression was responsive to water stress as part of the homeostasis, which resulted in constant leaf water potential and hydraulic conductivity.  相似文献

Summary Kudzu occurs in a variety of habitats in the southeastern United States. It is most common in exposed, forest edge sites and road cuts where it forms an extensive ground canopy as well as a canopy overtopping nearby trees, but it can also be found in completely open fields and deeply shaded sites within a forest. Microclimate, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential and photosynthetic responses to light, temperature and humidity were measured in two contrasting microhabitats on Pueraria lobata, kudzu. Midsummer leaf temperatures and leaf-to-air water vapor deficits for plants growing in an exposed site were significantly greater than for those in a shaded site, exceeding 35° C and 50 mmol mol-1, respectively. Maximum stomatal conductance exceeded 400 mmol m-2 s-1 in exposed leaves during peak vegetative growth. Stomatal conductance in shaded leaves was approximately half the value measured in exposed leaves on any particular dya. Maximum photosynthetic carbon uptake was also higher in leaves growing in exposed sites compared to leaves in shaded sites, exceeding 18.7 and 14.0 mol m-2 s-1, respectively. Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and intercellular CO2 concentration decreased dramatically in response to increasing water vapor deficit for leaves from both sites. However, transpiration showed an initial increase at intermediate water vapor deficits, leveling off or even decreasing at higher values. Leaf water potential demonstrated marked diurnal variation, but remained constant over a wide range of transpirational water fluxes. This latter feature, combined with microenvironmental modification through rapid leaf orientation and pronounced stomatal responses to water vapor deficits may represent important adaptive responses in the exploitation of a diverse array of habitats by kudzu.  相似文献

Ghost crabs Ocypode ceratophthalmus were exercised in air and water to measure CO2 and O2 exchange rates using the method of instantaneous measurements of oxygen consumption rate (MO2) where applicable. Average heart rate increased from 100 to nearly 400 pulses per minute after five minutes of exercise on a treadmill at a run rate of 0.133 m s?1. It took less than a minute for oxygen taken up through the lung epithelium from the air inside the branchial cavity to reach the maximal oxygen consumption rate of 26.1 mmol O2 kg?1 h?1. Resting MO2 was 4.06 mmol O2 kg?1 h?1 in air, but decreased to 3.37 mmol O2 kg?1 h?1 in seawater. Radioactive CO2 from injected l-lactate is released linearly by the lung. The percent accumulated 14-CO2 in exhaled air, plotted against time, intersects zero time on the x -axis, indicating rapid gas exchange at the lung surface. The P 50 values for native haemocyanin of 4.89 mm Hg before exercise, and 8.99 mm Hg after exercise, are typical of a high-affinity haemocyanin usually associated with terrestrial crabs. The current notion that Ocypode ceratophthalmus drown when submerged in seawater was not substantiated by our experiments. MO2 in seawater increased from 3.37 mmol O2 kg?1 h?1 for resting crabs to 5.72 mmol O2 kg?1 h?1 during exercise. When submerged by wave-seawater in the natural environment and during exercise in respirometer-seawater O. ceratophthalmus do not swim but, having a specific density of 1.044, float nearly weightless with a minimum of body movements.  相似文献

Dew formation, a common meteorological phenomenon, is expected to intensify in the future. Dew can influence the H218O and HDO isotopic compositions of leaf water (δL), but the phenomenon has been neglected in many experimental and modelling studies. In this study, the dew effect on δL was investigated with a dark plant chamber in which dew formation was introduced. The H218O and HDO compositions of water vapour, dew water and leaf water of five species were measured for up to 48 h of dew exposure. Our results show that the exchanges of H218O and HDO in leaf water with the air continued in the darkness when the net H216O flux was zero. Our estimates of the leaf conductance using the isotopic mass balance method ranged from 0.035 to 0.087 mol m?2 s?1, in broad agreement of the night‐time stomatal conductance reported in the literature. In our experiments, the conductance of the C4 species was 0.04 ± 0.01 mol m?2 s?1 and that of the C3 plants was 0.10 ± 0.04 mol m?2 s?1. At the end of 16 h dew exposure, 72 (±17) and 94 (±11)% of the leaf water came from dew according to the 18O and D tracer, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract Pitcairnia integrifolia is endemic to northern Trinidad and the Paria peninsula of Venezuela and is the only member of the bromeliad-subfamily Pitcairnioideae in Trinidad. It is terrestrial with roots fully functional in water and solute uptake, grows on exposed steep rocky cliffs and can occur just above the spill zone of sea waves under continuous sea spray. Thus, it can be subject both to water stress, particularly during the dry season, and to salt stress. Gas exchange of P. integrifolia leaves was measured on a clear day in Trinidad. Uptake of CO2 and leaf conductance to diffusion of water vapour had two peaks during the light period, a larger one in the early morning and a smaller one in the late afternoon, which were separated by an extended midday depression of gas exchange. CO2 partial pressure in the leaf air-spaces increased during the midday depression. Leaf temperatures reached a maximum of 51.6°C and leaf-air water-vapour-concentration differences were also very high during the midday depression, when quantum fluxes were up to 2 mmol m?2 s?1 and higher. The midday depression is considered as a functional adaptation to temporary water stress. Although P. integrifolia is subject to sea-spray, an internal osmotic pressure of only 0.91 MPa indicated that NaCl is not accumulated. Leaf epidermis cells are thick-walled and have a prominent cuticle. The abaxial leaf surface with the trichomes is not wettable, and the trichomes apparently do not function in water and solute uptake. They cover the stomata densely and may create a favourable microenvironment around them. They also have a high reflectance. This does not prevent overheating of the leaves, but does reduce the photosynthetically active radiation penetrating to the mesophyll. The trichomes may thus contribute to the prevention of photoinhibition at high incident quantum flux.  相似文献

Abstract Field measurements of the gas exchange of epiphytic bromeliads were made during the dry season in Trinidad in order to compare carbon assimilation with water use in CAM and C3 photosynthesis. The expression of CAM was found to be directly influenced by habitat and microclimate. The timing of nocturnal CO2 uptake was restricted to the end of the dark period in plants found at drier habitats, and stomatal conductance in two CAM species was found to respond directly to humidity or temperature. Total night-time CO2 uptake, when compared with malic-acid formation (measured as the dawn-dusk difference in acidity, ΔH+), could only account for 10–40% of the total ΔH+ accumulated. The remaining malic acid must have been derived from the refixation of respired CO2 (recycling). Within the genus Aechmea (12 samples from four species), recycling was significantly correlated with night temperature at the six sample sites. Recycling was lowest in A. fendleri (54% of ΔH+ derived from respired CO2), a CAM bromeliad with little water-storage parenchyma that is restricted to wetter, cooler regions of Trinidad. Gas-exchange rates of C3 bromeliads were found to be similar to those of the CAM bromeliads, with CO2 uptake from 1 to 3 μmol m?2 s?1 and stomatal conductances generally up to 100 mmol m?2 s?1. The midday depression of photosynthesis occurred in exposed habitats, although photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) limited photosynthesis in shaded habitats. CO2 uptake of the C3 bromeliad Guzmania lingulata was saturated at around 500 μmol m?2 s?1 PAR, suggesting that epiphytic plants found in the shaded forest understorey are shade-tolerant rather than shade-demanding. Transpiration ratios (TR) during CO2 fixation in CAM (Phase I and IV) and C3 bromeliads were compared at different sites in order to assess the efficiency of water utilization. For the epiphytes displaying marked uptake of CO2, TR were found to be lower than many previously published values. In addition, the average TR values were very similar for dark CO2 uptake in CAM (42 ± 41, n= 12), Phase IV of CAM (69 ± 36, n= 3) and for C3 photosynthesis (99 ± 73, n= 4) in these plants. It appears that recycling of respired CO2 by CAM bromeliads and efficient use of water in all phases of CO2 uptake are physiological adaptations of bromeliads to arid microclimates in the humid tropics.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in minimum leaf conductance to water vapor (gmin), an estimate of cuticular conductance, and photosynthetic gas exchange in two co-occurring oak species in north-east Kansas (USA) were examined to determine if leaf gas exchange characteristics correlated with differences in tree distribution. Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa Michx.) is more abundant in mesic gallery forest sites, whereas chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii Englm.) is more abundant in xeric sites. Early, during leaf expansion, gmin was significantly lower in chinquapin oak than in bur oak, though midday water potentials were similar. After leaves had fully expanded, gmin decreased to seasonal minimum values of 4.57 (±0.274) mmol m-2 s-1 in bur oak, and 2.66 (±0.156) mmol m-2 s-1 in chinquapin oak. Water potentials at these times were significantly higher in chinquapin oak. As leaves were expanding, photosynthesis (Anet) was significantly higher in chinquapin oak than in bur oak. Later in the growing season, Anet and gleaf increased dramatically in both species, and were significantly higher in bur oak relative to chinquapin oak. We concluded that bur and chinquapin oak have a number of leaf gas exchange characteristics that minimize seasonal water loss. These characteristics are distinct from trees from more mesic sites, and are consistent with the distribution patterns of these trees in tall-grass prairie gallery forests.  相似文献

The effects of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), leaf temperature and the leaf-to-air water vapor concentration drop on net CO2 uptake and water vapor conductance were surveyed for 14 species of ferns. Most previous studies indicated that ferns have extremely low maximal rates of net CO2 uptake, below 2 umol m?2 s?1, whereas the average maximal rate observed here at 250 C was 7 umol m?2 s?1. Net CO2 uptake reached 90% of saturation at an average PAR (400 to 700 nm) of only 240 umol m?2 s?1, consistent with the typically shaded habitats of most ferns. Maximal CO2 uptake rates were positively correlated with the PAR for 90% saturation (r2=0.59), the chlorophyII per unit leaf area (r2=0.30), the water vapor conductance (r2=0.65), and the CO2 residual conductance (r2=0.69). A higher water vapor conductance (gwv) was correlated with a greater fractional change in gwv as the leaf-to-air water vapor concentration drop (Δcwv) was raised from 5to20 g m?3 (r2=0.90). Specifically, for species with low gwv of about I mm s?1 the ratio of gwv at Δcwv= 5 g m?3 to that at Δcwv= 20 g m?3 was near 1, but it was near 2 for species with gwv of about 4 mm s?1. Such a relationship, which can prevent excessive transpiration, has apparently not previously been pointed out in surveys of other plant groups.  相似文献

On the basis of measurements or stand transpiration and microclimate, the bulk stomatal or bulk leaf conductance (gL) of a beech forest in northern Germany was calculated for periods in which leaves were fully expanded and the canopy was dry. This conductance depends strongly on light and humidity conditions above the forest. During periods with photosynthetic photon flux densities Q > 1200 μmol m?2s?1, gL was reduced from 1500mmol m?2s?1 at a vapour pressure deficit D= 0.5kPa to 500 mmol m?2s?1 at D= 2kPa. Light saturation of gL was not reached until Q= 1200 μmol m?2s?1 at low D, or until even higher Q at higher D. The dependence of gL, on Q and D was described mathematically by a non-linear equation that requires two empirical parameters. Values for gL as simulated by this equation provided a satisfactory agreement with independent porometer data collected on single leaves and scaled up to the canopy. A comparison of stomatal and aerodynamic conductances showed a strong coupling between the forest canopy and the atmosphere, indicating that transpiration of the beech forest is controlled mainly by the stomata.  相似文献

In Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam.) Urb., photon-saturated photosynthetic capacity (P Nmax) was 13 mol(CO2) m–2 s–1. Average stomatal conductance (g s) and water-use efficiency (WUE) were greater at high irradiance, about 260 mmol(H2O) m–2 s–1 and 2.15 g(C) kg–1(H2O), respectively. In the dark, g s values were about 30% of maximum g s. Leaf nutrient contents on a leaf area basis were 131, 15, 36, 21, and 12 mmol m–2 for N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. Ochroma also accumulated a greater amount of soluble saccharides than starch, 128 versus 90 g kg–1 (DM). The availability of N and Mg, but not P, Ca, or K, may limit photosynthetic rates of Ochroma in this site.  相似文献

Linking measurements of carbonyl sulfide (COS) with those of carbon dioxide (CO2) has a potential in providing a powerful tracer of gross CO2 fluxes between the atmosphere and land plants, a critical element in understanding the response of the land biosphere to global change. A new application of online COS, CO2 and water vapor measurements based on newly designed mid‐infrared (IR) dual quantum cascade laser (QCL) spectrometer measures COS and CO2 (at 2056 cm?1) and water vapor (at 2190 cm?1), with detectors cooled thermoelectrically (at ?43 °C) or with liquid nitrogen (?197 °C) for improved precision. Using the cryogenic detectors with averaging time of 1 s, precision was 50 pmol mol?1, 0.4 μmol mol?1 and 0.01 mmol mol?1 for COS, CO2 and water vapor, respectively (14, 0.2 and 0.003, respectively, for 60 s averaging time). We measured COS concentrations in ambient air, and changes in the rates of COS, CO2 and water vapor exchange of attached leaves in response to changes in light intensity and ambient COS concentrations. The results were consistent with those of nononline gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for COS and IR gas analyzer for CO2 and water vapor, with a high linear correlation for a broad range of concentrations (R2= 0.85 for COS and R2= 1.00 for CO2 and water vapor). The new methodology opens the way for lab and field explorations of COS fluxes as a powerful new tracer for CO2 exchange in the land biosphere.  相似文献

Abstract According to computer energy balance simulations of horizontal thin leaves, the quantitative effects of stomatal distribution patterns (top vs. bottom surfaces) on transpiration (E) were maximal for sunlit leaves with high stomatal conductances (gs) and experiencing low windspeeds (free or mixed convection regimes). E of these leaves decreased at windspeeds > 50 cm s?1, despite increases in the leaf-to-air vapour density deficit. At 50 cm s?1 wind-speed, rapidly transpiring leaves had greater E when one-half of the stomata were on each leaf surface (amphistomaty; 10.16 mmol H2O m?2 s?1) than when all stomata were on either the top (hyperstomaty; 9.34 mmol m?2s?1) or bottom (hypostomaty; 7.02 mmol m?2s?1) surface because water loss occurred in parallel from both surfaces. Hyperstomatous leaves had larger E than hypostomatous leaves because free convection was greater on the top than on the bottom surface. Transpiration of leaves with large g, was greatest at windspeeds near zero when ~60–75% of the stomata were on the top surface, while at high windspeeds E was greatest with, 50% of the stomata on top. For leaves with low gs, stomatal distribution exerted little influence on simulated E values. Laboratory measurements of water loss from simulated hypo-, hyper-, and amphistomatous leaf models qualitatively supported these predictions.  相似文献

Summary Under controlled conditions, CO2 exchange of Tillandsia recurvata showed all characteristics of CAM. During the phase of nocturnal CO2 fixation stomata of the plant responded sensitively to changes in ambient air humidity. Dry air resulted in an increase, moist air in a decrease of diffusion resistance. The evaporative demand of the air affected the level of stomatal resistance during the entire night period. Due to stomatal closure, the total nocturnal water loss of T. recurvata was less at low than at high humidity. It is concluded that stomata respond directly to humidity and not via bulk tissue water conditions of the leaves. Such control of transpiration may optimize water use efficiency for this almost rootless, extreme epiphyte.  相似文献

The median lethal copper (Cu) concentration (96 hr-LC50) values for acute Cu toxicity for Tilapia sparrmanii (live mass: 30 ± 8g) in Mooi River hard water of dolomitic origin at 20 °C, pH 7.9, was 68.1 μmol l?1. At this 96 hr-LC50 value the specific oxygen consumption rate (∈ O2) decreased by 44.2 (± 2.1) % from a non-exposed value of 6.6 (±0.32) mmol O2 kg?1 hr?1 to 3.63 (±0.23) mmol O2 kg ?1 hr?1. At 46.4 μmol Cu l?1, 100% of the exposed T. sparrmanii were still alive after 96 hours, but the ∈ O2 decreased by a mean value of 1.65 (± 0.16) mmol O2 kg?1 fish hr?1 or 25% (± 2.4). Contrary to Pb and Cd, Cu as CuCl2 2H2O was not precipitated in hard water four days after it was dissolved. Thus T. sparrmanii and other cichlids are shown to be more than an order of magnitude more resistant to Cu as a toxicant than most salmonids.  相似文献

Concurrent, independent measurements of stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E) and microenvironmental variables were used to characterize control of crown transpiration in four tree species growing in a moist, lowland tropical forest. Access to the upper forest canopy was provided by a construction crane equipped with a gondola. Estimates of boundary layer conductance (gb) obtained with two independent methods permitted control of E to be partitioned quantitatively between gs and gb using a dimensionless decoupling coefficient (Ω) ranging from zero to 1. A combination of high gs (c. 300–600 mmol m?2 s?1) and low wind speed, and therefore relatively low gb (c. 100–800 mmol m?2 s?1), strongly decoupled E from control by stomata in all four species (Ω= 0.7–0.9). Photosynthetic water-use efficiency was predicted to increase rather than decrease with increasing gs because gb was relatively low and internal conductance to CO2 transfer was relatively high. Responses of gs to humidity were apparent only when the leaf surface, and not the bulk air, was used as the reference point for determination of external vapour pressure. However, independent measurements of crown conductance (gc), a total vapour phase conductance that included stomatal and boundary layer components, revealed a clear decline in gc with increasing leaf-to-bulk air vapour pressure difference (Va because the external reference points for determination of gc and Va were compatible. The relationships between gc and Vc and between gs and Vs appeared to be distinct for each species. However, when gs and gc were normalized by the branch-specific ratio of leaf area to sapwood area (LA/SA), a morphological index of potential transpirational demand relative to water transport capacity, a common relationship between conductance and evaporative demand for all four species emerged. Taken together, these results implied that, at a given combination of LA/SA and evaporative demand scaled to the appropriate reference point, the vapour phase conductance and therefore transpiration rates on a leaf area basis were identical in all four contrasting species studied.  相似文献

Most C3 plant species have partially open stomata during the night especially in the 3–5 h before dawn. This pre‐dawn stomatal opening has been hypothesized to enhance early‐morning photosynthesis (A) by reducing diffusion limitations to CO2 at dawn. We tested this hypothesis in cultivated Helianthus annuus using whole‐shoot gas exchange, leaf level gas exchange and modelling approaches. One hour pre‐dawn low‐humidity treatments were used to reduce pre‐dawn stomatal conductance (g). At the whole‐shoot level, a difference of pre‐dawn g (0.40 versus 0.17 mol m?2 s?1) did not significantly affect A during the first hour after dawn. Shorter term effects were investigated with leaf level gas exchange measurements and a difference of pre‐dawn g (0.10 versus 0.04 mol m?2 s?1) affected g and A for only 5 min after dawn. The potential effects of a wider range of stomatal apertures were explored with an empirical model of the relationship between A and intercellular CO2 concentration during the half‐hour after dawn. Modelling results demonstrated that even extremely low pre‐dawn stomatal conductance values have only a minimal effect on early‐morning A for a few minutes after dawn. Thus, we found no evidence that pre‐dawn stomatal opening enhances A.  相似文献

Environmental and physiological regulation of transpiration were examined in several gap-colonizing shrub and tree species during two consecutive dry seasons in a moist, lowland tropical forest on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Whole plant transpiration, stomatal and total vapor phase (stomatal + boundary layer) conductance, plant water potential and environmental variables were measured concurrently. This allowed control of transpiration (E) to be partitioned quantitatively between stomatal (g s) and boundary layer (g b) conductance and permitted the impact of invividual environmental and physiological variables on stomatal behavior and E to be assessed. Wind speed in treefall gap sites was often below the 0.25 m s–1 stalling speed of the anemometer used and was rarely above 0.5 m s–1, resulting in uniformly low g b (c. 200–300 mmol m–2 s–1) among all species studied regardless of leaf size. Stomatal conductance was typically equal to or somewhat greater than g b. This strongly decoupled E from control by stomata, so that in Miconia argentea a 10% change in g s when g s was near its mean value was predicted to yield only a 2.5% change in E. Porometric estimates of E, obtained as the product of g s and the leaf-bulk air vapor pressure difference (VPD) without taking g b into account, were up to 300% higher than actual E determined from sap flow measurements. Porometry was thus inadequate as a means of assessing the physiological consequences of stomatal behavior in different gap colonizing species. Stomatal responses to humidity strongly limited the increase in E with increasing evaporative demand. Stomata of all species studied appeared to respond to increasing evaporative demand in the same manner when the leaf surface was selected as the reference point for determination of external vapor pressure and when simultaneous variation of light and leaf-air VPD was taken into account. This result suggests that contrasting stomatal responses to similar leaf-bulk air VPD may be governed as much by the external boundary layer as by intrinsic physiological differences among species. Both E and g s initially increased sharply with increasing leaf area-specific total hydraulic conductance of the soil/root/leaf pathway (G t), becoming asymptotic at higher values of G t. For both E and g s a unique relationship appeared to describe the response of all species to variations in G t. The relatively weak correlation observed between g s and midday leaf water potential suggested that stomatal adjustment to variations in water availability coordinated E with water transport efficiency rather than bulk leaf water status.  相似文献

Changes in photon flux can induce stomatal patchiness   总被引:9,自引:2,他引:7
Images of chlorophyll fluorescence were used to detect the occurrence of stomatal patchiness in leaves from eight species under variable photon flux conditions. Pronounced stomatal patchiness was induced within 5–10 min after PFD was changed from intermediate (~450 μmol quanta m?2 s?1) to low (~150 μmol quanta m?2 s?1) levels. This effect was completely reversible by returning PFD to intermediate levels. The pattern of heterogeneous fluorescence for each leaf was usually similar during repeated applications of medium and low PFD. In three species, stomatal patchiness could only be induced in slightly water-stressed plants. Leaves of more severely water-stressed Xanthium strumarium plants in low air humidity exhibited oscillations in fluorescence that corresponded with oscillatory changes in leaf diffusion conductance for water vapour. Stomatal patchiness was also induced by illuminating dark-adapted leaves with low PFD (below 200–300 μmol quanta m?2 s?1). Infiltration of leaves with distilled water showed that heterogeneous chlorophyll fluorescence was caused by changes in stomatal apertures.  相似文献
