Candle burning is regarded as an important source of airborne pollutants in indoor environments. Indoor concentrations of aldehydes, benzo(a)pyrene, sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) produced from the burning of scented candles and raw materials with different melting point/oil content (50/1, 55/9, and 65/6) were predicted using a single compartment mass balance model and compared to regulatory or guideline limits. Scented candles may be responsible for indoor acrolein concentrations that could become relevant to health only in the case of chronic exposure. Indoor concentrations of fine PM and SO2 emitted from 65/6 wax burning under worst-case environmental and behavioral conditions were greater than their respective acute guideline limits. However, other waxes had levels of PM and SO2 well below the recommended values. Indoor concentrations of nitrogen dioxide emitted from raw wax burning should be further investigated. The degree of pureness of raw waxes significantly affected the predicted indoor concentrations of PM and SO2. In particular, 65/6 wax was criticized for its high content of impurities.  相似文献

Foliar elements were analysed in Scots pine, Sitka spruce and Norway spruce over a 6 year period before and during continuous exposure to SO2 and O3 in an open-air fumigation experiment. Sulphur dioxide treatment elevated foliar sulphur concentration in all species, and there were increases in foliar nitrogen in the two spruce species but not in pine. The concentrations of cations were frequently increased by SO2 treatment, but there was no correlation between the sulphur concentration of needles and their total cation charge. SO2-related elevations of foliar magnesium were correlated with the concentration of this element in soil solution, but the mechanism by which other cations were enhanced remains unclear. The only consistent effects on nutrient ratios were for SO2 treatments to increase sulphur/cation ratios.  相似文献

The proportion of total sulphur lost during combustion (600 °C) of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) foliage is reduced from> 90% to 65–70% as the SO4-S concentration increases from 10% to 45–50% of the total S content. Foliar SO4-S content is decreased by improvement of plant nitrogen status, suggesting that alterations to soil N availability may influence S transfer to the atmosphere during biomass burning.  相似文献

A set of compounds incorporating carbon-based zinc-binding groups (ZBGs), of the type PhX (X?=?COOH, CONH2, CONHNH2, CONHOH, CONHOMe), and the corresponding derivatives with sulphur(VI)-based ZBGs (X?=?SO3H, SO2NH2, SO2NHNH2, SO2NHOH, SO2NHOMe) were tested as inhibitors of all mammalian isoforms of carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1), CA I–XV. Three factors connected with the ZBG influenced the efficacy as CA inhibitor (CAI) of the investigated compounds: (i) the pKa of the ZBG; (ii) its geometry (tetrahedral, i.e. sulphur-based, versus trigonal, i.e. carbon-based ZBGs), and (iii) orientation of the organic scaffold induced by the nature of the ZBG. Benzenesulphonamide was the best inhibitor of all isoforms, but other ZBGs led to interesting inhibition profiles, although with an efficacy generally reduced when compared to the sulphonamide. The nature of the ZBG also influenced the CA inhibition mechanism. Most of these derivatives were zinc binders, but some of them (sulfonates, carboxylates) may interact with the enzyme by anchoring to the zinc-coordinated water molecule or by other inhibition mechanisms (occlusion of the active site entrance, out of the active site binding, etc.). Exploring structurally diverse ZBGs may lead to interesting new developments in the field of CAIs.  相似文献

Pollution by inorganic and organic sulphur compounds is increasing and, because of the many environmental hazards associated with these compounds (e.g. toxicity, acidification of rain and freshwater, increase of COD, the greenhouse effect), must be taken seriously. There is a wide variety of sulphur oxidizing bacteria available in nature, and these can be used for the effective control of such pollution. The best way to break the sulphur cycle is to stop it at sulphur which, being insoluble, can be easily recovered (e.g.SO4 2- S2- S0). (Eco)physiological knowledge about the sulphur oxidizing bacteria has proved very useful in the prediction of the performance of sulphur oxidizing communities in actual wastewater treatment systems. Appropriate reactor design, based on this type of study, is essential if such bacterial communities are to function efficiently, especially when toxic sulphides must be treated. This paper reviews the natural and anthropogenic sources of sulphur pollution, its consequences and possible solutions.  相似文献

The impact of SO2 on the ionic balance of plants and its implications for intracellular pH regulation was studied to find explanations for long-term effects of SO2. When sulphur, taken up as SO2 by the shoots of plants, is not assimilated in organic compounds, but stored as sulphate, an equivalent amount of H+ is produced. These H+ ions are not buffered chemically, but removed by metabolic processes.On the basis of knowledge on metabolic buffering mechanisms a conceptual model is proposed for the removal of shoot-generated H+ by (i) OH- ions, produced in the leaves when sulphate and nitrate are assimilated in organic compounds and/or by (ii) OH- ions produced by decarboxylation of organic anions (a biochemical pH stat mechanism). The form in which nitrogen is supplied largely determines the potential of the plant to neutralize H+ in the leaves during SO2 uptake by the proposed mechanisms.In field experiments with N2 fixing Vicia faba L. crops, the increase of sulphate in the shoots of SO2-exposed plants was equivalent in charge to the decrease of organic anion content, calculated as the difference between inorganic cation content (C) and inorganic anion content (A), indicating that H+ ions produced in the leaves following SO2 uptake were partly removed by OH- from sulphate reduction and partly by decarboxylation of organic anions.The appearance of chronic SO2 injury (leaf damage) in the field experiment at the end of the growing period is discussed in relation to the impact of SO2 on the processes involved in regulation of intracellular pH. It is proposed that the metabolic buffering capacity of leaf cells is related to the rates of sulphate and nitrate reduction and the import rate of organic anions, rather than to the organic anion content in the vacuoles of the leaf cells.  相似文献

Ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase and glycollate oxidase were partially purified from jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) needles. Preincubation of RuBP carboxylase with HCO3? and Mg2+ markedly stimulated its activity. RuBP carboxylase showed hyperbolic reaction kinetics with respect to HCO3?, Mg2+, and RuBP. Both SO32- and SO42- inhibited RuBP carboxylase, but SO32- was more inhibitory than SO42-. The SO32- inhibition was competitive with respect to HCO3? (whether SO32- was present during activation or was added to the activated enzyme), while the SO42- inhibition was non-competitive with respect to HCO3?. Glycollate oxidase was inhibited more severely by low concentrations of SO32- than by SO42-. Fumigation of jack pine seedlings with 0.34 ppm sulphur dioxide for 24 and 48 hr produced a considerable decline in the activities of these enzymes, but 1 hr of fumigation produced no effect. During the longer exposures the sulphur content of the needles increased considerably, although the needles showed no visible injury. It is suggested that the accumulation of SO32- and SO42- in the needles following sulphur dioxide exposure influenced the enzyme activities.  相似文献

The changes in flax straw structure when treated with sulphur dioxide (SO2) and consequent effect on dew-retting of the treated straw were investigated. The active oxoanions released by sulfurous acid degraded phenolics bound to the polysaccharides and lipids leading to an increase in water-soluble carbohydrates and polyphenols. As a result, proportions of hemicellulose, nitrogen, sulphur, ash and caustic weight loss were higher in treated straw while lipid was reduced. The coarseness of treated fibre was possibly caused by in situ dryback of the hydrolysed polysaccharides. The deposition of salts containing high concentrations of sulphur, calcium and potassium in the vicinity of the fibre bundles and epidermal layer was observed and investigated. In a dew-retting trial comprising SO2-treated and untreated samples, the SO2 treatment delayed microbial colonisation and, consequently, retting by nearly 2 wk compared to the controls. The changes in pH, fungal population and polysaccharide degrading enzymes were monitored. The differences in fibre yield, fineness and strength are presented.  相似文献

Sulphur compounds present in coal impose severe limitations on its utilization since sulphur-containing gases emitted into the atmosphere upon direct combustion of coal cause serious environmental pollution problems. Removal of sulphur compounds from coal by microbial action has many advantages over physical and chemical desulphurization methods. The potential use of various microorganisms for the removal of sulphur compounds from coal is presented. Environmental conditions and major process variables affecting the process performance are identified and their possible effects are discussed. Various process schemes for microbial desulphurization (MDS) of coal are suggested. It is concluded that microbial methods have a high potential in removing sulphur compounds from coal. However, more research and development work is needed in this field to overcome present technological problems.  相似文献

In leaves of birch (Betula pendula Roth), changes in the content of total sulphur and its inorganic and organic forms were determined in relation to the decreasing air-pollution load (SO2) in the air-polluted Krusne hory mountains and the Decin sandstone highlands in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2004. Results have shown that birch is able to use considerable amounts of sulphur taken through leaves from air-pollution load. Birch responds fast to changes in air-pollution load by fall in the content of total and inorganic forms of sulphur in leaves.  相似文献

 The mesophyll structure of current and second year needles of mature Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.), growing on a survey line from the Karelian Isthmus (N.W. Leningrad region, Russia) to S.E. Finland, was studied at the light microscopic level in 1992 and 1994. The area is affected by sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from Russia (200  000–285 000 ton/year SO2 and about 100  000 ton/year NOX), Estonia (140  000–320  000 ton/year SO2 and 30  000–50  000 ton/year NOX) and Finland (6000–9000 ton/year SO2 and 23 000–25 000 ton/year NOX) and by unknown amounts of neutralizing compounds from Estonia. Mean concentrations of SO2 were between 1.0 and 1.5 μg m–3 and those of ozone between 52 and 61 μg m–3 during growing seasons of 1991–1994. The concentrations tended to be lower in 1993/94 than in 1991/92. The results showed cellular changes related to exposure to sulphur dioxide, ozone and acid wet deposition. The percentage of cells with injuries related to acid deposition was higher in 1994 than in 1992, possibly due to higher reduction of neutralizing than of acidifying compounds in the main emission areas, while the percentage of cells with injuries related to sulphur dioxide correlated positively with needle sulphur concentrations and showed a declining trend between Karelian Isthmus and S.E. Finland in the needles sampled in 1992. These changes and those related to ozone were considerably less numerous in 1994 than in 1992, possibly on account of the lower concentrations of SO2 and ozone in 1993/94 than in 1991/92, especially in early summer, the time of the most sensitive phase of needle growth. In addition, periods of lower wet deposition in summer 1992, and considerably lower temperatures in autumn/winter 1992 than in 1994 may have enhanced the injuries in the needles collected in October/December 1992, relative to those collected in 1994. The results of the microscopic work agreed well with the simultaneous chemical measurements, pointing to the usefulness of cellular analysis for diagnostic work in the field. In order to assess the environmental risks associated with the emission of fly-ash into the atmosphere and its storage on waste heaps, the trace element contents of fly-ashes from burning Polish hard coal were determined by a newly developed INAA method. Leaching of trace elements from the fly-ash by water and H2SO4 solution (pH≈2.5) simulating acid rain, respectively, was studied using AAS and spectrophotometric methods. Analogous experiments were done with neutron-irradiated fly-ash, following the composition of the eluate gamma-spectrometrically. The new fine fly-ash (CTA-FFA-1) candidate reference material was prepared, and the certification was undertaken on the basis of an international intercomparison run. Preliminary evaluation of results shows that at least 38 elements will be certified and, in addition, the “information values” for at least 12 elements will be given.  相似文献

Summary Using 35S-sulphate, the specific activity of various sulphur fractions in some diverse North Queensland soils has been followed for up to 185 days in a glasshouse experiment. The sulphur extracted with 0.01 M calcium phosphate was from the same pool as that used by the test plants, and since near full recovery of added 35SO4 was obtained initially, this fraction is comparable to the L-value. On the other hand, 0.5 M NaHCO3 removed some soil sulphur that was not available to the plants.Liming caused an initial increase in the phosphate extractable fraction, the sulphur seemingly being released from the NaHCO3 extractable fraction, but decreased sulphate sorption also contributed to the increase in S uptake by the plants upon liming. re]19750507  相似文献

国家“十二五”规划确定将在内蒙古锡林郭勒盟建设国家重点大型煤电基地.煤电一体化开发将大大地推动锡盟的区域经济发展,但也可能会对这一典型草原地区和重要生态屏障地区的生态环境造成不利影响.采用物料平衡法和指数增长模型对2001-2009年锡林郭勒盟SO2排放量与人均GDP做了相关性分析,发现二者关系基本符合环境库兹涅茨曲线,呈较缓和倒U型曲线,拐点在人均GDP35000-40000元,目前已过曲线拐点,SO2排放量缓步下降.对锡盟煤电一体化开发情景下(2012-2020)的SO2排放及人均GDP进行预测,结果显示SO2排放量将随经济发展呈上升趋势,表明煤电一体化开发会使环境库兹涅茨曲线的拐点后延,虽然到2020年SO2排放量仍然没有超出区域大气环境容量,但将接近环境容量极限,会给当地环境带来明显压力;基于以上判断,进而从制度、技术、市场三方面出发,探讨了促进锡盟煤电一体化产业建设与环境保护协调发展的对策.  相似文献

The Triassic–Jurassic boundary (Tr–J; ∼201 Ma) is marked by a doubling in the concentration of atmospheric CO2, rising temperatures, and ecosystem instability. This appears to have been driven by a major perturbation in the global carbon cycle due to massive volcanism in the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province. It is hypothesized that this volcanism also likely delivered sulphur dioxide (SO2) to the atmosphere. The role that SO2 may have played in leading to ecosystem instability at the time has not received much attention. To date, little direct evidence has been presented from the fossil record capable of implicating SO2 as a cause of plant extinctions at this time. In order to address this, we performed a physiognomic leaf analysis on well-preserved fossil leaves, including Ginkgoales, bennettites, and conifers from nine plant beds that span the Tr–J boundary at Astartekløft, East Greenland. The physiognomic responses of fossil taxa were compared to the leaf size and shape variations observed in nearest living equivalent taxa exposed to simulated palaeoatmospheric treatments in controlled environment chambers. The modern taxa showed a statistically significant increase in leaf roundness when fumigated with SO2. A similar increase in leaf roundness was also observed in the Tr–J fossil taxa immediately prior to a sudden decrease in their relative abundances at Astartekløft. This research reveals that increases in atmospheric SO2 can likely be traced in the fossil record by analyzing physiognomic changes in fossil leaves. A pattern of relative abundance decline following increased leaf roundness for all six fossil taxa investigated supports the hypothesis that SO2 had a significant role in Tr–J plant extinctions. This finding highlights that the role of SO2 in plant biodiversity declines across other major geological boundaries coinciding with global scale volcanism should be further explored using leaf physiognomy.  相似文献

Serum Clara cell protein (CC16) and surfactant-associated protein D (SP-D) were measured in 161 workers exposed to sulphur dioxide (SO2) in a non-ferrous smelter. Seventy workers from a blanket manufacture served as referents. Exposure to SO2 and tobacco smoking were associated with a decrease of CC16 and an increase of SP-D in serum. Tobacco smoking and exposure SO2 interacted synergistically to decrease serum CC16 but not to increase serum SP-D. While further illustrating the potential of serum CC16 and SP-D, our study confirms that SO2 can cause airways damage at exposure levels below current occupational exposure limits.  相似文献

Recent control of atmospheric SO2 pollution is leading to important soil sulphur impoverishment. Plasticity could be a mechanism allowing species to adapt to this rapid global change. Trifolium repens L. is a key grassland species whose performances in community are strongly linked to nitrogen availability. Plasticity of three white clover lines contrasting in their ability to use atmospheric N2 or soil N was assessed by analysing a set of functional traits along a gradient of nitrogen and sulphur fertilisation applied on a poor soil. White clover traits showed high morphological and physiological plasticity. Nitrogen appeared to be the most limiting factor for the VLF (Very Low Fixation) line. S was the element that modulated the most traits for the nitrogen fixing lines NNU (Normal Nitrate Uptake) and LNU (Low Nitrate Uptake). As expected, N fertilisation inhibited white clover fixation, but we also observed that N2 fixation was enhanced when S was added. S fertilisation increased nodule length as well as the proportion of nodules containing leghaemoglobin. S fertilisation, with a direct effect and an indirect effect through N2 fixation, increases white clover performances particularly with regards to photosynthesis and potential vegetative reproduction. The important plasticity in response to S availability should allow it to adapt to a large range of abiotic conditions, but its sensitivity to S nutrition would be a disadvantage for competition in a situation of soil sulphur impoverishment. In contrast, S fertilisation could help maintain this species when nitrogen status is against it.  相似文献

The expansion of coal-fired power stations in South Africa has resulted in growing environmental concerns as they are the largest emitters of sulphur dioxide (SO2). Sulphur dioxide emissions from power plants pose a potential threat to avian populations. However, the effect of SO2 pollution on bird communities is poorly understood. Using point counts we investigated the relationships of bird species richness and species-specific density with SO2 concentrations around Matimba power station. Environmental parameters were derived from remotely sensed data and data reduction was performed using principal component analysis. Generalised linear mixed models were then used to infer the relationships of bird species richness and species-specific densities with SO2 concentrations and the environmental variables. Our results revealed that SO2-polluted air had no influence on bird species richness and densities in our study sites, but SO2 levels were below annual national ambient air quality standards. Vegetation productivity was found to have a greater influence on species densities than SO2 pollution. Monitoring of bird population changes around Matimba power station once neighbouring Medupi power station is fully operational is recommended, as SO2 content of the air will increase significantly, and species may be sensitive to this increase in SO2 levels.  相似文献

In tobacco plants the net uptake of sulphate and its transport to the shoot were determined after cultivation with low, normal, and high sulphate supply. The relative amount of the sulphate taken up that was transported to the shoot was used as a measure of xylem loading. Net uptake of sulphate and its transport to the shoot were low in tobacco plants grown with low sulphate, and high in plants cultivated with high sulphate. Xylem loading, however, was relatively low in tobacco plants grown with high sulphate and relatively high in tobacco plants grown with low sulphate supply. Pre-culture in low sulphate containing nutrient solution also resulted in a high proportion of the absorbed sulphate being transported into the xylem if normal sulphateconcentration was supplied afterwards. Fumigation with H2S or SO2 reduced net uptake of sulphate in tobacco plants grown with normal, but not with high sulphate supply. Sulphate transport to the shoots was diminished by H2S or SO2 fumigation in tobacco plants grown with normal and high sulphate supply. Also the relative amount of the sulphate taken up that was transported to the shoot was lowered by fumigation with H2S or SO2 in tobacco plants grown with normal sulphate supply. Apparently, the diminished sulphate transport to the shoot upon H2S or SO2 fumigation can only partially be explained by a smaller sulphate uptake. Sulphur nutrition of tobacco plants also seems to be controlled by xylem loading of sulphate. The possible role of glutathione as a signal regulating sulphur nutrition of tobacco plants upon fumigation with H2S and SO2 is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of exposure to sulphur dioxide (0 or 96 µgm–3 SO2) on the growth and sulphur content of lucerne(Medicago sativa L.) was examined in a period of 135 d duringwhich the plants were harvested four times. The lucerne wasgrown in pots of soil with and without the addition of sulphateand of nitrate. Evidence of sulphur deficiency, including areduction in the weight, the number and the sulphur contentof shoots, was found in plants grown without added sulphate.Deficiency was alleviated through exposure of plants to SO2.Apart from reducing shoot weight at one harvest and generallyincreasimg the concentration of sulphur in the shoots, exposureto SO2 had no significant effect on plants grown with addedsulphate. The yield of shoots was greater, and was reduced toa lesser extent with sulphur deficiency, in plants grown withadded nitrate than in those dependent on rhizobia. Whilst thetranspiration coefficient increased greatly in sulphur-deficientplants, it was reduced where otherwise similarly treated plantswere exposed to SO2; this treatment did not alter the coefficientin plants with an adequate supply of sulphur from the soil.  相似文献
