Rove beetles of the genus Stenus possess a unique adhesive prey-capture apparatus that enables them to catch elusive prey such as springtails over a distance of several millimeters. The prey-capture device combines the hierarchically organized morphology of dry adhesive systems with the properties of wet ones, since an adhesive secretion is released into the contact zone. We hypothesize that this combination enables Stenus species successfully to capture prey possessing a wide range of surface structures and chemistries. We have investigated the influence of both surface energy and roughness of the substrate on the adhesive performance of the prey-capture apparatus in two Stenus species. Force transducers have been used to measure both the compressive and adhesive forces generated during the predatory strike of the beetles on (1) epoxy resin surfaces with defined roughness values (smooth versus rough with asperity diameters ranging from 0.3 to 12 μm) and (2) hydrophobic versus hydrophilic glass surfaces. Our experiments show that neither the surface roughness nor the surface energy significantly influences the attachment ability of the prey-capture apparatus. Thus, in contrast to the performance of locomotory adhesive systems in geckos, beetles, and flies, no critical surface roughness exists that might impede adhesion of the prey-capture apparatus of Stenus beetles. The prey-capture apparatus of Stenus beetles is therefore well adapted to adhere to the various unpredictable surfaces with diverse roughness and surface energy occurring in a wide range of potential prey.  相似文献

Adhesive devices are used by arthropods not only in terrestrial locomotion but also in prey capture and predator defence. We argue that the physical mechanisms involved in both these contexts must mainly be capillarity and the viscosity of an adhesive secretion, whereas other mechanisms, such as friction or intermolecular forces, are of minor importance. Adhesive prey-capture devices might function as passive devices or might be actively extended toward the prey, sometimes in a very rapid manner. Adhesive mechanisms used for predator defence might involve firm adhesion to the substratum or the discharge of a sticky secretion to immobilize the appendages of the opponent. We review the occurrence of adhesive devices as employed in both functional contexts across the Arthropoda and argue that these mechanisms are of particular importance for slow-moving and relatively clumsy life forms. We discuss three case studies in more detail. (1) Loricera larvae (Carabidae) use galeae with an extremely flexible cuticle in combination with an adhesive secretion. (2) Adult Stenus species (Staphylinidae) employ two highly flexible paraglossae that are covered by an adhesive emulsion of lipid droplets dispersed in an aqueous proteinaceous liquid. (3) Springtails often adhere to the mouthparts, the antennae, the legs, or other parts of the integument of Stenus larvae before being captured with the mandibles.  相似文献

Rove beetles of the genus Stenus produce and store bioactive alkaloids like stenusine ( 3 ), 3‐(2‐methylbut‐1‐enyl)pyridine ( 4 ), and cicindeloine ( 5 ) in their pygidial glands to protect themselves from predation and microorganismic infestation. The biosynthesis of stenusine ( 3 ), 3‐(2‐methylbut‐1‐enyl)pyridine ( 4 ), and cicindeloine ( 5 ) was previously investigated in Stenus bimaculatus, Stenus similis, and Stenus solutus, respectively. The piperideine alkaloid cicindeloine ( 5 ) occurs also as a major compound in the pygidial gland secretion of Stenus cicindeloides. The three metabolites follow the same biosynthetic pathway, where the N‐heterocyclic ring is derived from L ‐lysine and the side chain from L ‐isoleucine. The different alkaloids are finally obtained by few modifications of shared precursor molecules, such as 2,3,4,5‐tetrahydro‐5‐(2‐methylbutylidene)pyridine ( 1 ). This piperideine alkaloid was synthesized and detected by GC/MS and GC at a chiral phase in the pygidial glands of Stenus similis, Stenus tarsalis, and Stenus cicindeloides.  相似文献

Habituation to captivity is difficult for some species. Understanding the motivational elements involved in predation may ease this habituation. Seventy‐one Brazilian jararaca snakes (Bothrops jararaca [Wied, 1824], Viperidae, Crotalinae) recently captured and never fed in captivity were tested for predatory behavior on rodents. Lighting was adapted to allow predatory sessions to occur during the first hours of the night when these animals are more active. Up to three prey subjects were presented in a session. In the first experiment, the preference for prey size and color was assessed using albino and dark‐colored rodents. In a second experiment, a group of snakes was submitted to 12 sessions during a period of almost 2 years. The strike strategy was classified in one of two categories: envenomation (E) or seizing (S). Envenomation involved a bite delivered by the snake with prompt retrieval of the head; holding the rodent in the snake’s jaws since the first strike, without retrieving the fangs and holding the prey during venom action, characterized S strike. Trailing and swallowing the dead prey always followed E strike. Results suggest that snakes fed more often on larger subjects. The color of the prey was not a relevant factor. E strike was predominant in the first predatory event in captivity. After habituation, S strike was predominant. Snakes may have a poor perception of the prey objects in captivity and adopt a strike strategy that assures the control of the prey. Biomechanics of morphing structures in the Venus flytrap has attracted the attention of scientists during the last 140 years. The trap closes in a tenth of a second if a prey touches a trigger hair twice. The driving force of the closing process is most likely due to the elastic curvature energy stored and locked in the leaves, which is caused by a pressure differential between the upper and lower layers of the leaf. The trap strikes, holds and compresses the prey. We have developed new methods for measuring all these forces involved in the hunting cycle. We made precise calibration of the piezoelectric sensor and performed direct measurements of the average impact force of the trap closing using a high speed video camera for the determination of time constants. The new equation for the average impact force was derived. The impact average force between rims of two lobes in the Venus flytrap was found equal to 149 mN and the corresponding pressure between the rims was about 41 kPa. Direct measurements of the constriction force in the trap of Dionaea muscipula was performed during gelatin digestion. This force increases in the process of digestion from zero to 450 mN with maximal constriction pressure created by the lobes reaching to 9 kPa. The insects and different small prey have little chance to escape after the snap of the trap. The prey would need to overpower the “escaping” force which is very strong and can reach up to 4 N.  相似文献

The proximate forces that create omnivores out of herbivores and predators have long fascinated ecologists, but the causal reasons for a shift to omnivory are poorly understood. Determining what factors influence changes in trophic position are essential as omnivory plays a central role in theoretical and applied ecology. We used sevenspotted lady beetles (Coccinella septempunctata) to test how prey nutrient content affects beetles’ propensity to engage in herbivory. We show that beetles consuming an all‐prey diet demonstrate normal growth and development, but suffer a complete loss of fitness (spermatogenic failure) that is restored via herbivory and supplementation with phytosterols and cholesterol. Furthermore, we show that lady beetles possess a state‐dependent sterol‐specific appetite and redressed their sterol deficit by feeding on foliage. These results demonstrate that predators balance their nutrient intake via herbivory when prey quality is low, and reveal a selective force (sterol nutrition) that drives predatory taxa to omnivory.  相似文献

Recent studies comparing terrestrial versus aquatic locomotion in animals have shown that changes in kinematics, muscular activation patterns, and performance across media are often dramatic. Surprisingly, however, despite the importance of feeding to the survival of most animals, few studies have compared differences in feeding behaviour between media. The present study compares prey-capture behaviour, strike success, strike velocity and acceleration, and prey-capture kinematics in a semi-aquatic pitviper (Agkistrodon piscivorus) when capturing both terrestrial (mice) and aquatic (fish) prey in a standardized laboratory setting. Strike velocity and acceleration did not differ significantly between media, but instead were positively correlated with initial prey distance. By contrast, the kinematics of terrestrial and aquatic strikes differed significantly in several aspects: max gape angle during the retraction phase, angular velocity of mouth closing during the strike, and the initial head angle before the strike. Terrestrial strikes were associated with higher gape angles during the retraction phase, higher angular velocities of mouth closure, and a more inclined head angle at the onset of the strike. Finally, strike success differed significantly between strike types, with terrestrial strikes being considerably more successful than aquatic strikes. Strike success likely differed due to the relatively slow mouth-closing velocity of aquatic strikes.  相似文献

The evolution of aquatic prey-capture strategies in snakes has been suggested as a model system for the study of convergence. However, hypotheses of correlated evolution of prey-capture strategy with different aspects of foraging niche have never been tested quantitatively. Whereas a considerable amount of data is available for North American species, data for European species are scarce. In this study we combine original data on prey-capture strategies and strike velocities for European natricines with data for North American Natricinae obtained from the literature. We did not find any evidence for correlated evolution between prey-capture strategy and strike velocity with diet, but there was a significant correlation with prey density. Thus, our study suggests that prey density, rather than diet, played an important role in the evolution of the different prey-capture strategies and strike velocities of natricine snakes.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 73–83.  相似文献

Synopsis The behavior of individual, juvenile pink salmon toward novel prey (Artemia salina) under laboratory conditions is described. Two aspects of predatory behavior, namely latency time to initial prey-capture attempt and prey-capture success, are quantified in relation to chronological age and feeding experience. Initially, mean latency time declined slightly with increasing age up to Day 19 (post-emergence from gravel), but increased sharply to an asymptote with further aging. Mean percentage capture success gradually increased from 7.88% on Day 1 to 92.9% on Day 45. Prior feeding experience on the prey resulted in a decline (to a stable level) in mean latency time in experienced fish compared to control fish. Mean percentage capture success was not significantly altered by prior feeding experience on the prey.  相似文献

Large-bodied, top- and apex predators (e.g., crocodilians, sharks, wolves, killer whales) can exert strong top-down effects within ecological communities through their interactions with prey. Due to inherent difficulties while studying the behavior of these often dangerous predatory species, relatively little is known regarding their feeding behaviors and activity patterns, information that is essential to understanding their role in regulating food web dynamics and ecological processes. Here we use animal-borne imaging systems (Crittercam) to study the foraging behavior and activity patterns of a cryptic, large-bodied predator, the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) in two estuaries of coastal Florida, USA. Using retrieved video data we examine the variation in foraging behaviors and activity patterns due to abiotic factors. We found the frequency of prey-attacks (mean = 0.49 prey attacks/hour) as well as the probability of prey-capture success (mean = 0.52 per attack) were significantly affected by time of day. Alligators attempted to capture prey most frequently during the night. Probability of prey-capture success per attack was highest during morning hours and sequentially lower during day, night, and sunset, respectively. Position in the water column also significantly affected prey-capture success, as individuals’ experienced two-fold greater success when attacking prey while submerged. These estimates are the first for wild adult American alligators and one of the few examples for any crocodilian species worldwide. More broadly, these results reveal that our understandings of crocodilian foraging behaviors are biased due to previous studies containing limited observations of cryptic and nocturnal foraging interactions. Our results can be used to inform greater understanding regarding the top-down effects of American alligators in estuarine food webs. Additionally, our results highlight the importance and power of using animal-borne imaging when studying the behavior of elusive large-bodied, apex predators, as it provides critical insights into their trophic and behavioral interactions.  相似文献

Many representatives of the beetle family Chrysomelidae exhibit a distinctive sexual dimorphism in the structure of adhesive tarsal setae. The present study demonstrates the influence of surface roughness on the friction force of Leptinotarsa decemlineata males and females. The maximum friction force of individual beetles was measured on epoxy resin surfaces (smooth and with asperities ranging from 0.3 to 12.0 microm) using a centrifugal force tester. On the smooth surface, no considerable differences between males and females were found, whereas on rough surfaces, females attached significantly (up to two times) stronger than males. Clawless beetles generated lower forces than intact ones, but demonstrated similar differences between males and females. The results indicate that the female adhesive system has its main functional trait in a stronger specialisation to rough plant surfaces whereas the adhesive system of males possess a certain trade-off between attachment to rough plant surfaces during locomotion on vegetation and to the smooth surface of the female elytra, while mating.  相似文献

The effect of microscale contact of rough surfaces on the adhesion and friction under negative normal forces was experimentally investigated. The adhesive force of single point contact - sapphire ball to flat polyurethane did not vary with the normal force. With rough surface contact, which was assumed to be a great number of point contacts, the adhesive force increased logarithmically with the normal force. Under negative normal force adhesive state, the tangential force (more than hundred mN) were much larger than the negative normal force (several mN) and increased with the linear decrease of negative normal force. The results reveal why the gecko's toe must slide slightly on the target surface when it makes contact on a surface and suggest how a biomimetic gecko foot might be designed.  相似文献

We investigated the role of freshwater macrophytes as refuge by testing the hypothesis that predators capture fewer prey in more dense and structurally complex habitats. We also tested the hypothesis that habitat structure not only affects the prey-capture success of a single predator in isolation, but also the effectiveness of two predators combined, particularly if it mediates interactions between the predators. We conducted a fully crossed four-factorial laboratory experiment using artificial plants to determine the separate quantitative (density) and qualitative (shape) components of macrophyte structure on the prey-capture success of a predatory damselfly, Ischnura heterosticta tasmanica, and the southern pygmy perch, Nannoperca australis. Contrary to our expectations, macrophyte density had no effect on the prey-capture success of either predator, but both predators were significantly less effective in the structurally complex Myriophyllum analogue than in the structurally simpler Triglochin and Eleocharis analogues. Furthermore, the greater structural complexity of Myriophyllum amplified the impact of the negative interaction between the predators on prey numbers; the habitat use by damselfly larvae in response to the presence of southern pygmy perch meant they captured less prey in Myriophyllum. These results demonstrate habitat structure can influence multiple predator effects, and support the mechanism of increased prey refuge in more structurally complex macrophytes.  相似文献

The attachment system on the ladybird beetle Harmonia axyridis is composed of a pair of pretarsal claws and adhesive pads at the tarsal segments. The claws, which are connected to the pretarsal segment, are mainly used to hold the rough substrates by their apical diverged hooks. In contrast, the adhesive pads have an adhesive function when landing on smooth surfaces. They are interspersed at the ventral adhesive pad of each tarsomere, and are composed of two kinds of hairy setae. The discoid tip seta (DtS) is located at the central region of each adhesive pad. The DtS has a spoon‐shaped endplate with a long and narrow shaft. In contrast, the pointed tip seta (PtS) is interspersed along the marginal regions of each adhesive pad, and has a hook‐shaped spine near the tip. In the present study, we found numerous fine cuticular pores beneath the setae, which seem to be related to the secretion of some adhesive fluids. It may be deduced that ladybird beetles can attach to smooth surfaces more effectively by employing adhesive fluids filling in surface crevices to overcome problems cause by their larger size endplates.  相似文献

Insects show a large variety in prey capture strategies, with a correspondingly large diversity in predatory adaptations. We studied a specific type of predatory claws, these can for example be found in praying mantis species. The claw is closeable over its entire length and the prey is fixed between the femur (upper arm) and the tibia (lower arm) of the insect leg. The morphology of these predatory claws is diverse. Some species have straight claws covered with spines, while other species have smooth, curved claws. We have studied the mechanics of this femur-tibia type of predatory insect claws, by making a physical model, eventually trying to explain why in some insect species the claws are curved instead of straight. The main results are (1) when comparing curved claws to straight claws, curvature leads to a strong reduction of forces driving the prey away from the pivoting point, thereby reducing the need for friction generating structures. (2) In the curved claw model a position exists where the resulting force on the prey is exactly zero. This is because the normal forces on the femur and tibia are opposed, and in line. At this position the prey is perfectly clamped and not driven out of the claw. This feature does not exist in straight claws. (3) In the curved claw, the prey cannot be placed at a position further than a certain maximum distance from the pivoting point. Near this maximum position, the resulting force on the prey reaches high values because moment arms are near zero. (4) Between the zero position and the maximum position the resulting force is directed toward the pivoting point, which stabilizes prey fixation.  相似文献

At all developmental stages, Diplonychus indicus Venk. & Rao (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) bugs make predatory attempts and catch prey both from ambush and while foraging actively. The distribution of predatory movements between these two foraging modes does not vary significantly during development, although a bug generally performs more predatory attempts from ambush than during active search. Both modes were subdivided and six different predatory movement types were recorded. These different predatory types are not all performed at the same frequency at all developmental stages. The proportion of predatory attempts including a preliminary lunge decreases with age whereas the proportion of simple predatory attempts (strike) increases with age. There is a significant effect of developmental stage and of predatory mode on capture success. General capture success rate increases with age and success rates vary with predatory type. Capture success of predatory attempts made while swimming is always lower than capture success of simple predatory attempts (strike). These rates do not vary during development. On the contrary, success rates for the predatory types dive and lunge increase with developmental stage. For some predatory categories, capture success varies with predator-prey distance. The data then suggest that the bugs are undershooting.  相似文献

SEM studies show that the differentiation among Stenus species with respect to the formation of the tarsi (wide bilobed vs. slender tarsomeres) takes place with a considerable augmentation of tarsal ventral setae in wide bilobed tarsomeres. The structural diversity of ventral tarsal setae among and within species is discussed with respect to 1) their different roles as mechanosensilla and tenent setae, respectively, and 2) the different selection pressures in terms of adhesive requirements along the longitudinal tarsus axis. The tarsi are provided with four groups of tarsal mechanosensilla, comprising hair and bristle sensilla, campaniform sensilla, and scolopidia. The tarsus wall is supported by an epidermis, which forms three different types of glands pouring their secretion via different exit paths onto the outer cuticle. The organization and ultrastructure of each of these glands is described. Only one (unicellular) gland is directly associated with the ventral tenent setae and is thus considered to form the main part of the adhesive secretion. The beetles appear to release the tarsal secretion through mediation of the tenent setae, which contains a lipid and a proteinaceous fraction. I propose that the secretion is discharged to the outside via a system of very fine pore canals in the wall of the setal shaft. Gas chromatography and infrared spectroscopy revealed that the lipid fraction of the secretion is a mixture of unsaturated fatty acid glycerides and aliphatic hydrocarbons whose spectra are similar to those of extractions of the superficial lipid coating of the body surface.  相似文献

To investigate the potential non-target impacts of transgenic pest-resistant plants, prey-mediated impacts of a protease inhibitor (PI) on the predatory carabid, Nebria brevicollis, were investigated. The PI used was aprotinin, a serine PI of mammalian origin with insecticidal properties when incorporated in artificial diet or expressed in transgenic plants. Field-collected N. brevicollis adults, kept at 23 °C, 16:8 L:D, were fed, over their pre-aestivation activity period of 24 days, with Helicoverpa armigera larvae reared on an artificial diet containing 0.5% (w:w, fresh mass) aprotinin. These larvae contained 22.62 μg aprotinin/g insect. Control prey was reared on diet without aprotinin. Beetle survival and body mass were unaffected by prey type. Beetles consuming PI-fed prey lost significantly more mass than the control beetles during two periods of mass loss, but gained significantly more mass during the final period of mass gain. This was not due to differences in amounts of prey supplied or consumed. The final mass gain coincided with increased consumption of PI-prey. Female beetles were significantly heavier than males, but we found no consistent gender-based differences in response to PI-prey. At the end of the experiment, body mass of all beetles was similar to field-collected ones (approximately 55 mg). All experimental beetles had significantly lower activities of digestive cysteine proteases and the serine proteases chymotrypsin and trypsin than field-collected ones. Beetles consuming PI-fed prey had significantly lower levels of trypsin and higher levels of chymotrypsin and elastase than the control beetles.  相似文献

A technique is introduced for simultaneous measurements of the heel pad tissue deformation and the heel–ground contact stresses developing during the stance phase of gait. Subjects walked upon a gait platform integrating the contact pressure display optical method for plantar pressure measurements and a digital radiographic fluoroscopy system for skeletal and soft tissue motion recording. Clear images of the posterior-plantar aspect of the calcaneus and enveloping soft tissues were obtained simultaneously with the pressure distribution under the heel region throughout the stance phase of gait. The heel pad was shown to undergo a rapid compression during initial contact and heel strike, reaching a strain of 0.39±0.05 in about 150 ms. The stress–strain relation of the heel pad was shown to be highly non-linear, with a compression modulus of 105±11 kPa initially and 306±16 kPa at 30% strain. The energy dissipation during heel strike was evaluated to be 17.8±0.8%. The present technique is useful for biomechanical as well as clinical evaluation of the stress–strain and energy absorption characteristics of the heel pad in vivo, during natural gait.  相似文献
