Summary Darwin's phrase place in natural economy, andSpencer's term correspondence can be regarded as first attempts to express the organism-environment relationships. The same concept has more recently been approached from the point of view of (1) life-form, (2) external activities, and (3) habitat. Though all these points are interlocking, they have been stressed differently in the writings of American and European ecologists. It is proposed that the term niche would be most useful and rational if applied to the total of relationships between a living organism (population, species) and its complete environment, both biotic and abiotic.  相似文献

The properties of the -2-l-fucosyltransferases in submaxillary gland preparations from blood group ABH secrefors and non-secretors were compared. The level of activity in the non-secretor gland homogenates amounted to about 5% only of that found in the secretor gland preparations. The enzymes from the two sources differed in solubility properties, charge and affinities for donor and acceptor substrates. The enzyme from secretor glands showed a preference for acceptors with Type 1 [d-galactosyl(1–3)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine] structures whereas the enzyme from non-secretor glands had a preference for Type 2 [d-galactosyl(1–4)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine] structures.These results demonstrate that expression of the secretor gene (Se) is associated with a molecular form of the -2-l-fucosyltransferase that is different from the species present in the same tissue when theSe gene is not expressed.  相似文献

Summary A detailed investigation of the embryogeny ofPaeonia mascula, P. humilis, P. officinalis, P. lutea, P. tenuifolia, P. lactiflora, P. peregrina andP. suffruticosa has shown, that the embryo development conforms unequivocally to the true polyembryony type. It was pointed out, that the embryo development ofPaeonia is similar to some other angiosperms, and does not represent a case, which could be compared with certain gymnosperms. The zygote divides to form at first a coenocyte and then an embryonic mass (=VorkeimträgerErnsts). From this group of cells several proembryos arise, one of which generally matures into an embryo proper. Two embryos in a seed originate either by true or by false polyembryony.  相似文献

Summary In three areas of vegetation (dune, mountain heath and salt marsh) the following phytosociological techniques have been tested and compared, using the same data: the Braun-Blanquet method; association and inverse analysis ofWilliams &Lambert; cluster analysis (agglomerative classification) based on different coefficients of similarity; and ordination (principal components analysis performed on matrices of different coefficients).The Braun-Blanquet method is considered to combine several advantages of the other methods and to be most economical in terms of efficiency (ratio of time input to information emerging).
Zusammenfassung Auf drei verschiedenen Vegetationsflächen (Bergheide, Küstendünen und Salzwiesen) sind die folgenden pflanzensoziologischen Methoden geprüft und verglichen worden: die Methode von Braun-Blanquet; association analysis vonWilliams &Lambert (1959, 1961); Ordination (principal components analysis); und cluster analysis (Sokal &Sneath, 1963). Die letzteren beiden wurden mit verschiedenen Ähnlichkeitskoeffizienten geprüft.Auf Grund solchen Erfahrungen, zeigte sich die Braun-Blanquetische Methode leistungsfähiger als die anderen Methoden (d.h. optimale Einsicht in der Vegetation pro Arbeitsstunde). Sie vereinigte viele Vorteile der anderen Methoden.

Paddy levees form networks of narrow linear habitats and play various roles in cultural landscapes. Traditional landscapes on the west side of Lake Biwa consist of paddy field terraces and both stone and soil levees that have been maintained by paddy field management using local resources. Paddy levees in this study site are principally classified into five different types. Our study points out how differences in paddy levee structure as well as in management practices influence the plant species. Seventeen paddy levee transects were split into four habitat types based on their species components by TWINSPAN. Spatial characteristics and physical structures of paddy levees depended on natural conditions and human activities. The species–area curves of each levee type showed a clear distinction: the soil, stone and abandoned curves were steep, while the concrete and consolidated ones were gentle. The vegetation on consolidated levees was utterly different from the vegetation on traditional levee types from the aspect of species richness and species components. Soil type levees contained various woody plant species and included more diverse and indigenous plant species than abandoned type levees.  相似文献

Summary The taste buds of the circumvallate papillae have been examined by electron microscopy in OsO4-fixed, PTA stained material or after KMnO4 fixation. The microvilli of the receptor cells have terminal dilatations which presumably give an increased surface area for transduction. The extracellular spaces at the necks of the receptor cells near the bases of the microvilli are interrupted by closed contacts.The synapses have a well defined synaptic cleft suggesting a chemical rather than an electrical mode of transmission. Synaptic membrane specialisations differ from the membrane thickenings of other types of synapse. Presynaptic dense projections are present but there is no well define postsynaptic thickening. Vesicles occur in both pre- and postsynaptic components, but it is debatable whether or not they should be termed synaptic vesicles. Acknowledgements. We are indebted to Professor J. Z. Young, F. R. Zusammenfassung Die positiven Photomorphosen Öffnung des Hypokotylhakens und Entfaltung der Kotyledonen können ganz ähnlich wie die phytochrominduzierte Anthocyansynthese und andere positive Photomorphosen durch Actinomycin D und Puromycin gehemmt werden. Man kann daraus schließen, daß diese beiden photomorphogenetischen Reaktionen des Senfkeimlings ebenfalls durch eine von P730 über eine Signalkette ausgelöste Aktivierung von potentiell aktiven Genen veranlaßt werden.
The inhibition of phytochrome-mediated photomorphogenesis (positive photoresponses) by actinomycin D and puromycin in the mustard seedling (Sinapis alba L.)
Summary The many photochrome-mediated photoresponses of a seedling (Sinapis alba L., white seeded mustard) can be divided into 3 categories: positive, negative, and complex photoresponses. Positive photoresponses are those which are characterized by an initiation or a promotion of biosynthetic or growth processes (Mohr, 1966b). Phytochrome-mediated anthocyanin synthesis is the prototype of a positive photoresponse. It has been shown in previous papers (e.g. Lange and Mohr, 1965; Mohr et al., 1965) that positive photoresponses can be specifically inhibited by actinomycin D and puromycin. It has been concluded that in the case of positive photoresponses P730 (the active phytochrome) exerts its function through differential gene activation.—In the present paper it has been demonstrated that phytochrome-mediated positive photoresponses of the mustard seedling like opening of the hypocotylar hook and unfolding of the cotyledons can be inhibited by relatively low doses of actinomycin D and puromycin in very much the same way as anthocyanin synthesis or cotyledon enlargement is inhibited. It has been concluded that in these cases too the action of P730 must be attributed to an activation of potentially active genes in the manner postulated on the basis of the data on anthocyanin synthesis.

Zusammenfassung In der Neurohypophyse fetaler und neugeborener Ratten entsteht die Mehrzahl der synaptischen Bläschen aus Erweiterungen der Neurotubuli. Ferner können pinocytotische Bläschen als synaptische Vesikel imponieren. Die Bläschenbildung aus Membranen von Elementargranula (vgl. Herlant, 1967) tritt dagegen in den Hintergrund. Ein Auftreten von Vesikeln im Innern von Elementargranula wurde nicht beobachtet.
The origin of synaptic vesicles in neurosecretory axons
Summary In the neurohypophysis of fetal and newborn rats the majority of synaptic vesicles originate from dilatations of neurotubuli. Moreover, pinocytotic invaginations give rise to synaptic vesicles. Evaginations of elementary granule membranes, as described by Herlant (1967), are seldom to be found and do not seem to play an important role in the formation of synaptic vesicles. The occurrence of vesicles within elementary granules was not observed.

Summary Cells ofMicrasterias denticulata Bréb. at the stage of secondary wall formation have been studied by freeze-etching. It was found that the plasma membrane exhibits oval areas in which arrays of membrane particles occur. These particles form rosettes which are arranged in a hexagonally ordered lattice with a center to center spacing of 25 nm. Nearly the same periodicities can be found between microfibrils. It is concluded that the rosettes probably together with the thickened area of the plasma membrane below them represent the apparatus for the production and orientation of microfibrils. The hypothesis suggesting the incorporation of membrane templates functional in microfibril formation, originally advanced byKiermayer andDobberstein (1973) has received further support.  相似文献

Summary In opposition to the morphological term growth-form the ecological term life-form is defined as the organization of a plant in correspondence with its life conditions. Ten life-forms of mosses are discerned, their part within various plant-formations and moss-associations is explained, and their dependence on ecological conditions is discussed.

Feulgen and silver-stained karyotypes and meiosis of two triploid viviparous onion forms (Allium cepa var.viviparum), the Croatian Ljutika and the Indian Pran, were comparatively analyzed. The results of chromosome measurements show that Ljutika and Pran are karyologically not identical, although significant similarities were found in the morphology of their chromosomes. Five geographically distant clones of Ljutika showed good agreement in the number and gross morphology of the chromosomes and in the number and position of NORs and interphase nucleoli. Heterotrivalents were predominant in meiosis of Ljutika but a relatively high frequency of higher multivalents together with univalents and bivalents were also observed. The relationship between Ljutika and Pran and their possible origin are discussed.  相似文献

Hybridizations ofElymus nutans andE. jacquemontii were carried out with one species ofPseudoroegneria (S genome), and 20Elymus species, each containing either of the SH, SY, SYH, or SYW genomes. Chromosome configurations were analysed at metaphase I of the two target taxa and their interspecific hybrids. It is concluded that (i)E. nutans is an allohexaploid containing the SYH genomes, andE. jacquemontii is an allotetraploid having the SY genomes; (ii) the genomic affinity is associated with the geographic distance between the species studied; (iii) minor genomic structural rearrangements have occurred within the hexaploid taxon ofE. nutans.  相似文献

Neuronic or decision equations, first proposed as a mathematical model of neural activity, have shown, after their exact, compact solution was found, typical behaviours that make them natural tools for General Systems studies. It is shown here that their mathematical investigation is remarkably furthered by generalizing the triangular inequality to polygonal ones. These permit the immediate computation of the tensorial expansion of linearly separable boolean functions, and exhibit clearly the connection between their continuous and discontinuous aspects.  相似文献

Five different strains of wine yeasts were investigated with respect to active uptake of [35S] sulfate and its regulation by methionine. Considerable differences exist between low and high sulfite-producing strains in the initial velocity of sulfate uptake. Further differences were established in repression of sulfate permease by l-methionine, most evident in a total lack of repression in one of the high sulfite producers. The paper offers comments arising from the author's experience as a practising taxonomist on two aspects of what is often called the species problem: the reality of species and species as individuals. Three different meanings of reality are distinguished and discussed in this context: mental reality, biological reality and evolutionary reality. The author holds the view that, on all three definitions, species must be judged to be real. On the argument concerning species as individuals, the opinions ofHull, Ghiselin and others are carefully presented but rejected by the author, who retains the belief that species are classes and not individuals.Dedicated to the memory of JohnS. Summary The seven possible primary trisomics of Petunia (2 n= 14) located in the progenies of triploid, hypertriploid and hypotriploid plants were distinguished from one another and from diploid on the basis of cytological and morphological criteria. They were provisionally named as Oval, Semi, Slender, Pseudonormal, Arrow, Narrow and Giant. In three of the trisomics, the extra chromosome was identified for the first time at pachytene stage. Postpachytene studies revealed no precise relationship between the length of extra chromosome and the frequency of multiple association.  相似文献

An adaptation model having two stages is introduced and its mathematical properties are examined. The two stages are the adaptive process (parameter K b), which has bleaching-type kinetics, and the response function (parameters K r and n), which incorporates response saturation. In order to study the increment threshold functions generated by the adaptation model the concept of a detector is required. It is demonstrated that without an adaptive process the compression hypothesis, in the form of the difference equation, produces increment threshold functions which saturate and do not obey Weber's law. It is then shown that an adaptive process with bleaching-type kinetics can prevent saturation and produce Weber's law behavior provided that the adaptive strength of the system exceeds the detector sensitivity.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridizations were carried out between the two tetraploidsElymus caucasicus andE. longearistatus, and 23 tetraploids and hexaploids ofElymus containing SH, SY, SYH, and SYW genomes and representing various geographical regions. Meiotic pairing was studied in the two target species and their hybrids. It is concluded from this study that (i) interspecific hybridization is fairly easy to perform although strong reproductive barriers exist between the species; (ii)Elymus caucasicus andE. longearistatus are allotetraploids, and share the diverged SY genomes; (iii) the divergence of SY genomes is correlated with the geographic distance between theElymus spp. studied.  相似文献
