The occurrences of harmful algal blooms (HABs), in terms of frequency and area in the Chinese coastal waters, have been increasing since 1980s and caused considerable economic losses. In the present study, we have analyzed spatial and seasonal characteristics of HAB events in the southern Yellow Sea and East China Sea along Chinese coast from 1933 to 2004. With a total 435 HAB records, the most frequent HAB occurrence area (FHA) is off the Yangtze River mouth and another two FHA areas are located south of the Yangtze River estuary along about isobaths of 30–60 m coastal water in the East China Sea. The time of HAB occurrence shifted during our study period: from autumn (August–October) before 1980s to July–August in 1980s, during May–July in 1990s, and May–June for the period of 2000–2004. Causative species were found to be different: Noctiluca scintillans and Skeletonema costatum were dominant causative species prior to 2000; and Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu was dominant from 2000 to 2004 and also caused large blooms in May. Trichodesmium sp. caused many HABs in autumn (August–October) prior to 1980s with only one HAB between 1980 and 2004. The changes of the dominant HAB species may have affected the timings of HAB occurrence, as well as the increasing HAB-affected areas in recent years.  相似文献

We investigated the geographical distribution of genetic variation in 67 individuals of Triglochin maritima from 38 localities across Europe using AFLP markers. Analysis of genetic variation resulted in the recognition of two major genetic groups. Apart from few geographical outliers, these are distributed (1) along the Atlantic coasts of Portugal, Spain and France and (2) in the North Sea area, the Baltic Sea area, at central European inland localities, the northern Adriatic Sea coast and the Mediterranean coast of southwest France. Considering possible range shifts of T. maritima in reaction to Quaternary climatic changes as deduced from the present-day northern temperature limit of the species, Quaternary changes of coastline in the North Sea area and the very recent origin of the Baltic Sea, we conclude that the coastal populations of T. maritima in the North Sea and Baltic Sea areas originated from inland populations.  相似文献

This paper studies the species composition and quantitative distribution of diatoms that belong to the genus Pseudo-nitzschia in the Russian waters of the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk. In total, 11 species of this genus were found in the area, including 7 that are known as being potentially toxic. The highest concentrations of Pseudo-nitzschia microalgae (1.4 × 106–2.7 × 106 cells/L) were found in the summer and autumn in the Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan and the lowest concentrations (2.5 × 102–1 × 104 cells/L) were found in the Sakhalinsky and Akademiya bays of the Sea of Okhotsk. The species diversity of potentially toxic diatoms was greatest (seven species) and the cell concentrations highest (over 6 × 105 cells/L) in the Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan, and in the Aniva Bay, Sea of Okhotsk. The density of potentially toxic species was highest near the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island, in the Amur River estuary, and in adjacent waters. This paper also presents geographical distribution maps of Pseudo-nitzschia species and maps of the density distribution of potentially toxic microalgae over the studied area and identifies potential amnesic shellfish poisoning areas.  相似文献

The gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, represents an important economic resource for Mediterranean aquaculture. In spite of its wide geographic distribution and economic importance, only recently studies have been carried out on the genetic composition of natural populations, which have revealed a picture of a heterogeneous degree of genetic differentiation among S. aurata populations. In this study an allozyme analysis of samples from six different collecting sites along the Italian and Croatian coasts was carried out, covering an area in the Central Mediterranean sea that has yet to be investigated through gene-enzyme systems. Data on 26 gene loci, 10 of which are polymorphic, indicate a slight but significant genetic structure (FST = 0.0167) of the species. A hierarchical analysis of population subdivision made it possible to identify three different assemblages found in the Adriatic Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea and Sardinian Channel, though an isolation by distance model can be rejected. The results are discussed in the light of previous literature and taking conservation into consideration.  相似文献

The distribution and ecology of seagrasses along parts of the Egyptian Red Sea coasts have been investigated. Five of the 10 species ever reported from the Red Sea have been found in this area, i.e. Halodule uninervis (Forssk.) Aschers., Thalassodendron ciliatum (Forssk.) den Hartog, Halophila stipulacea (Forssk.) Aschers., Halophila ovalis (R. Br.) Hook. f. and Halophila ovata Gaud. H. ovata is recorded here for the first time for the west coast of the Red Sea. The finding of Halophila decipiens Ostenfeld represents a new record to the Red Sea; this species has been found at a depth of 30 m, near Ras Ghârib in the Gulf of Suez.  相似文献

Abstract

Some preliminary results of a survey carried out along the Southern Adriatic coasts (Brindisi-S.M. Leuca) are reported in order to contribute to the knowledge of the phytoplankon community of this area. Ten Dinophysis species had been identified, four of them are known to be involved in DSP mussel contamination. Spatio-temporal distribution of Dinophysis spp. is shown.  相似文献

The effects of opening the Suez Canal as a connection between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea were reported for a number of marine species. However, the evolutionary origin of the seagrasses in the Red Sea and the linking population genetics of seagrasses between the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea have not yet been investigated in detail. The invasion of Halophila stipulacea Asch. from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean Sea after the opening of the Suez Canal was already recorded. We hypothesize that Halophila ovalis populations in the Red Sea developed through long-term historical processes such as vicariant evolutionary diversification. Seagrass samples were collected along the Egyptian coastline of the Red Sea and analysed by the molecular marker ITS. The sequences were compared with published ITS sequences from seagrasses collected in the whole area of interest. In this study, we reveal the linking population genetics, phylogeography and phylogenetics of two dominant seagrass species, Halophila stipulacea and Halophila ovalis, among species collected in the Red Sea and worldwide. The results indicate that the Red Sea Halophila ovalis populations do not group to Halophila ovalis worldwide, and Halophila major, Halophila ovalis collected worldwide and Halophila ovalis collected at the Red Sea are sister clades. Hence, vicariant evolutionary diversification for Halophila ovalis may occur in the Red Sea.  相似文献

Actinoptychus splendens is a conspicuous and widely distributed marine diatom. At present it is common in the coastal waters of the southern North Sea, but it appears to be absent in the older Holocene deposits along the Dutch and Belgian coasts. Its first postglacial appearance here can be dated at between 4400 and 4100 BP. By 3800 BP it is well established in the region. Although generally not abundant, it can be found in nearly every sample of younger marine or brackish deposits. The large amount of material investigated from the area, as well as the high preservation potential and easy recognition of the species, preclude any other explanation for its apparent absence along southern North Sea shores prior to ±4100 BP, than a late natural immigration. This appears to be quite exceptional, all the common species which generally occur in association with A. splendens being present from the onset of Holocene sedimentation. A. splendens may become an important marker taxon in the Holocene stratigraphy of the coastal plains along the southern North sea.  相似文献

We studied the vertical structure of the phytoplankton community in two toxic cyanobacterial blooms in the offshore Baltic Sea. In 1994, vertically separated potentially toxic, diazotrophic and mixotrophic species (belonging to Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Prymnesiophyceae) dominated. In 1997, picocyanobacteria, mainly in colonies, made up 40–50% of the total phytoplankton carbon biomass in the top 20 m both day and night. Colony-forming species of picocyanobacteria seem to be occasionally important and hitherto underestimated in the Baltic Sea.We found species-specific depth distribution patterns. Nodularia spumigena and Anabaena spp. were observed mainly above 10 m depth, while Aphanizomenon sp. was mostly found deeper, especially at night. Dinophysis norvegica was only abundant near the seasonal pycnocline and showed very limited diurnal migration. Other flagellates, including small Cryptophyceae and 10 identified Chrysochromulina species, occurred down to 40 m depth. Their vertical migration may help to retrieve nutrients from below the summer pycnocline.We conclude that considerable differences in dominating functional groups may occur between years/bloom stages, and that the vertical distribution pattern of many species is recurring at similar environmental conditions, suggesting species-specific niche-separation.  相似文献

To replenish the exploited native stocks ofOstrea edulis, imports from almost all European coasts have arrived in the North Sea, particularly in the Dutch Oosterschelde estuary. The American oysterCrassostrea virginica and the Portuguese oysterC. angulata have also been imported into the North Sea several times. However, only the introductions of various genetic strains of the Pacific oysterC. gigas have been of lasting success. Spat from British Columbia (Canada) was first imported to the Oosterschelde in 1964. First spatfalls in this area took place in the warm summers of 1975 and 1976. Further larval outbursts occurred in 1982 and 1989, and good settlements took place on culture plots as well as along the dikes of the Oosterschelde. Since 1977 no more cupped oysters have been imported from overseas. The population maintained itself and was able to spread in a northern direction along the Dutch North Sea coast. In Britain, hatchery-producedC. gigas were transferred to several sites, in the 1970s including the British North Sea coast. Here, occurrence in the wild seems to be rather limited up to now. Into the German Wadden Sea,C. gigas larvae and spat from a Scottish hatchery have been introduced since 1971, as were medium-sized oysters from a variety of European sources in the 1980s. Strong spatfalls on intertidal mussel beds in the northern German Wadden Sea occured in 1991 and 1994. For the introductions ofC. gigas along the west European coasts, precautionary measures to minimize unintentional transfers of associated organisms, as recommended by the ICES Code of Practice in 1994, came too late.  相似文献

Recently, aquaculture of Laminaria japonica has expanded to the southern coast of Japan and to China along the East China Sea. The southerly distribution of L. religiosa, compared to that of L. japonica, indicated that the aquaculture of L. religiosa along the southern coasts of Japan might be feasible. Thus, we examined the growth, biomass and productivity of L. religiosa cultivated in the Uwa Sea, in southwestern Japan over a period of two years. The seawater temperature ranged from 12.9 to 27.4°C in 2003/2004 and from 12.2 to 28.3°C in 2004/2005. In 2003/2004, the maximum mean density, maximum mean length, and maximum mean wet weight of L. religiosa was 7.8 ± 5.0 ind. m−1 (mean ± SD), 14.8 ± 4.6 cm, and 1.2 ± 0.8 g wet wt., respectively. In 2004/2005, no germination was confirmed through the study period. The maximum biomass and annual production in 2003/2004 were estimated to be 6.9 ± 5.2 g wet wt. m−1 and 8.9 g wet wt. m−1 year−1, respectively. The present study revealed that L. religiosa cultivated in the Uwa Sea were much smaller compared with those of Hokkaido Island, where the alga is naturally found. For the growth of L. religiosa, a relatively long period of seawater temperatures below 13.5°C is required. In the study area, seawater temperatures were below 13.5°C only 11 days in 2003, and 12 days in 2004. As a result, it is thought that expanding the cultivation of L. religiosa to southern areas including the Uwa Sea will be difficult.  相似文献

During a long-term study in the summer months of the years 1991–2008, 176 megaepifaunal species were recorded through a series of beam trawl surveys on a grid of fixed stations on the Dogger Bank (central North Sea). This paper gives a qualitative overview on species composition throughout the research period, determined from samples collected during 15 cruises. In recent years, a number of species with more oceanic distribution patterns (e.g. species from SW British coasts) has been collected. In spite of these newcomers, there was a slight decrease in total species numbers during the research period.  相似文献

The transition zone between the Mediterranean and Atlantic basins has been extensively addressed in phylogeographical studies of marine species. However, biases exist towards the analysis of highly dispersive species, and there is a higher sampling effort in European coasts compared to North Africa. This may be hindering a detailed understanding of the historical and contemporary processes that shaped patterns of population genetic structure in the region. In the present study, we investigated the phylogeographical and phylogenetic patterns of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences from a species with direct development and low dispersal abilities, Stenosoma nadejda (Rezig, 1989). The study area included 13 localities along the Atlantic and Mediterranean North African coasts, as well as the Alboran Sea. A new Stenosoma species, from the coasts of Algeria and Alboran Island, was discovered. For S. nadejda, phylogeographical analyses revealed three distinct clades: one in the Iberian Atlantic plus the Alboran Sea, one in the western Mediterranean, and another in the Atlantic coast of Africa. Haplotypes from the Alboran Island were more related to those from the western Mediterranean coast (east of the Almeria–Oran Front). The population dynamics of potentially harmful microalgae was investigated in the semi-enclosed shallow Gulf of Kalloni, Greece (Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean), during a 2-year period from August 2004 to March 2006. A total of 21 potentially harmful microalgae (bloom-forming and/or toxic) were identified including 3 diatoms and 18 dinoflagellates. The densities of each species were analyzed in time and space and in relation to environmental parameters. Some species such as Alexandrium insuetum, Heterocapsa circularisquama, Karlodinium veneficum, Scrippsiella trochoidea, and Ceratium spp. developed high cell concentrations, particularly during a Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha winter bloom. Other species such as Dinophysis caudata, Ostreopsis ovata, Prorocentrum minimum, and Protoperidinium crassipes were rare or appeared in small numbers. Densities of the most abundant species were closely associated with freshwater nutrient-rich inputs during winter, being negatively correlated with temperature and salinity and positively correlated with nitrogen. The spatial distribution of the abundant species exhibited a marked increase towards the inner part of the gulf, close to the main freshwater inputs, whereas some species were mainly concentrated in the dilute surface layer (1 m depth). Examination of the abundance–occupancy relationship revealed that the species more prone to bloom are those with wide spatial distribution and frequent presence throughout the year such as the diatom P. calliantha. Although blooms of cyst-forming species are rarer, an increased risk can be foreseen under favorable resource supply and environmental conditions during winter.  相似文献

In April 2004, an expedition to the Caspian Sea discovered the species in the Middle Caspian not previously described in this sea. These species preliminary identified as Oithona similis Claus 1963, Sagitta setosa Muller 1847, and Calanus euxinus (Hulsemann) are the main representatives of edible plankton of the Black Sea; most likely they were introduced into the Caspian Sea with ballast waters of ships passing through the Volga-Don Canal. At present, it is difficult to say if these species will be established in the Caspian Sea; if so, they will clearly become a valuable food resource for planktophagous fish in the Caspian Sea. In addition, we discovered two diatom species typical for the Black Sea phytoplankton, Pseudo-nitzschia seriata (Cleve) H. Peragallo and M. Peragallo and Cerataulina pelagica (Cleve) Hendey which invaded the Caspian Sea in recent years. Pseudo-nitzschia seriata synthesizes a toxin (domoic acid) and can become harmful for the basin in the case of mass bloom. Characteristics of seven Atlantic-Mediterranean fish species are provided. Of them, four (gobies—yellow-headed Gobius xanthocephalus and red-mouthed G. cruentatus, incognito blenny Parablennius incognitus, and greater pipefish Syngnathus acus) were either first found in the Black Sea coastal zone of the Crimea, or their findings were doubted, and three species (thin-lipped grey mullet Liza ramada, European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena, and Black Sea salmon Salmo trutta labrax) are very rare. Over the last decade, the authors recorded 15 fish species; of them, seven Atlantic-Mediterranean species have dispersed along the Crimean coasts by now, one endemic of the far eastern seas (chameleon goby Tridentiger trigonocephalus) has naturalized in Sevastopol Bay, four invading species, freshwater by origin, permanently occur in the estuary zones of the peninsula; the remaining three species are known from single findings and apparently belong to the category of accidental fish. An increase in the species composition of ichthyofauna off the Black Sea coasts of the Crimea results from the on-going process of mediterranization—the invasion in the estuary of freshwater tolerant species at the expense of accidental species that penetrated here either independently or with ballast waters.  相似文献

Data on the qualitative and quantitative composition of resting stages of planktonic microalgae in recent marine sediments of Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) over the period 2000–2007 are presented. A total of sixty one morphological forms of resting stages represented by dinoflagellate and raphidophyte cysts and diatom spores and resting cells were recorded in the sediment samples. This study revealed cysts of the potentially toxic species Alexandrium tamarense, A. cf. minutum, Alexandrium sp., Gymnodinium catenatum (PSP toxin producers), and Protoceratium reticulatum (yessotoxin producer); resting cells of Pseudo-nitzschia sp. (potential producer of domoic acid); and cysts of bloom-forming species Cochlodinium cf. polykrikoides and Heterosigma cf. akashiwo.  相似文献

The false mussel Mytilopsis adamsi, originally described from the Pacific coast of Panama, is reported for the first time as an introduced species in the Urías estuary and an adjacent shrimp farm, on the Pacific coasts of Mexico. In the 19th century, this species was transported from the Pacific coast of Panama, reaching the Indo-Pacific Ocean, but it had not been previously reported in other coasts of the American Pacific. Its recent and irregular presence in this small estuary near shore the Mazatlán harbor and an adjacent shrimp farm suggests that the species was introduced into the area but it cannot still be considered as a harmful invader. The presence of the species in the shrimp farm may indicate that it was introduced along with shrimp stocks from Central America, although its passive transportation to the estuary via ballast water or attached to hulls is not discounted.  相似文献
