  • 1 Spatial and temporal variation in the distribution and feeding of non‐predatory macroinvertebrates was investigated in a first‐order, acid stream in the Ashdown Forest, southern England.
  • 2 Stonefly (Nemouridae) and chironomid (Orthocladiinae) larvae were abundant on the upper surfaces of mineral substrata of three sizes (small stones, large stones, bedrock). The density of larvae in each taxonomic group did not vary among substrata of different sizes, although strong seasonal variation existed.
  • 3 Nemourids and chironomids (H. marcidus) collected from the upper surfaces of substrata exhibited generalist feeding habits, consuming algae (diatoms, coccoid and filamentous green algae), detritus (biofilm matrix material and fine particulate organic matter (FPOM)) and inorganic debris.
  • 4 There was spatial variation in the gut contents of nemourids. The proportion of algae in the guts of larvae often increased with the size of the substratum from which they were collected. Strong temporal variation in the composition of the diet also existed. Nemourids ingested a large quantity of attached algae and biofilm matrix from the biofilm in spring and winter, but consumed loose FPOM and associated microflora in summer and autumn.
  • 5 We conclude that, in this acid stream, the trophic linkage between algae and grazers is maintained by ‘detritivorous’ stonefly and chironomid species. The relationship between the feeding habits of these larvae and other life‐history attributes, such as mouthpart morphology and mobility, is discussed.

A quantitative comparison of the grazing behaviour of young Oreochromis niloticus feeding on the planktonic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa and a periphytic community dominated by the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria sp., determined that biomass ingestion rates of fish filter-feeding on planktonic cyanobacteria were significantly lower than those surface-grazing on periphyton. Comparisons of published laboratory data on filter-feeding with field data on algal ingestion rates suggest that filter-feeding may be a relatively unimportant method of ingesting algae.  相似文献

1. Many amphibious plant species grow in the transition between terrestrial and submerged vegetation in small lowland streams. We determined biomass development, leaf turnover rate and invertebrate herbivory during summer in terrestrial and aquatic populations of three amphibious species to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of aerial and submerged life.
2. Terrestrial populations had higher area shoot density, biomass and leaf production than aquatic populations, while leaf turnover rate and longevity were the same. Terrestrial populations experienced lower percentage grazing loss of leaf production (average 1.2–5.1%) than aquatic populations (2.9–17.3%), while the same plant dry mass was consumed per unit ground area.
3. Grazing loss increased linearly with leaf age apart from the youngest leaf stages. Grazing loss during the lifetime of leaves was therefore 2.4–3.1 times higher than mean apparent loss to standing leaves of all ages. The results imply that variation in density of grazers relative to plant production can account for differences in grazing impact between terrestrial and aquatic populations, and that fast leaf turnover keeps apparent grazing damage down.
4. We conclude that the ability of amphibious plants to grow submerged permits them to expand their niche and escape intense competition on land, but the stream does not provide a refugium against grazing and constrains plant production compared with the terrestrial habitat.  相似文献

Herbivory rates are generally thought to be higher in tropical than in temperate forests. Nevertheless, tests of this biogeographic prediction by comparing a single plant species across a tropical-temperate range are scarce. Here, we compare herbivore damage between subtropical and temperate populations of the evergreen tree Aextoxicon punctatum (Olivillo), distributed between 30° and 43° S along the Pacific margin of Chile. To assess the impact of herbivory on Olivillo seedlings, we set up 29 experimental plots, 1.5 × 3 m: 16 in forests of Fray Jorge National Park (subtropical latitude), and 13 in Guabún, Chiloé Island (temperate latitude). Half of each plot was fenced around with chicken wire, to exclude small mammals, and the other half was left unfenced. In each half of the plots we planted 16 seedlings of Olivillo in December 2003, with a total of 928 plants. Seedling survival, leaf production and herbivory by invertebrates were monitored over the next 16 mo. Small mammal herbivores killed ca 30 percent of seedlings in both sites. Nevertheless, invertebrate herbivory was greater in the temperate forest, thus contradicting the expected trend of increasing herbivore impact toward the tropics. Seedling growth was greater in subtropical forest suggesting better conditions for tree growth or that higher invertebrate herbivory depressed seedling growth in the temperate forest. Invertebrate herbivory increased toward temperate latitudes while small mammal herbivory was similar in both sites. We suggest that comparison of single species can be useful to test generalizations about latitudinal patterns and allow disentangling factors controlling herbivory patterns across communities.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of litter cover on herbivory and performance (annual survival and relative growth rate in height and leaf number) for established seedlings (≥9 cm tall, and ≥4 mo old), of four shade-tolerant, large-seeded, co-occurring Sapotaceae species. Seedlings were divided into three litter treatments: (1) litter addition, (2) control, and (3) continuous litter removal. The mean survival for all treatments in descending order were: Chrysophyllum pomiferum (89%), Pouteria pemviemis (84%), P. caimito (75%), and Micropholis venulosa (40%). For all variables, species differed significantly within litter treatments. In M. venulosa, survival and relative growth rate in leaf number significantly decreased with the removal of litter, whereas herbivory increased. Relative growth rate in height of P. peruviensis decreased significantly with litter removal, while the levels of herbivory were higher with the addition of litter. Conversely, litter quantity had no effect on the performance of C. pomiferum, but herbivory was lower in the removal treatment. Finally, in P. caimito, litter treatment did not affect performance or herbivory. Results suggest that differences in litter quantity differentially affect tree species with similar biology (i.e., large-seeds, shade tolerance) in life stages other than germination and early establishment. The variability in species' responses to litter might be an important factor in determining species richness, abundance, and distribution of tropical rain forest tree species at the seedling level.  相似文献

Summary The species combinations of myrmecophytic plants were compared in three different, neighboring local central Amazon forest sites. The proportional contribution of myrmecophytes in each setting varied significantly, withMaieta guainensis being the most abundant in each locality. This pattern resulted in low site similarity values. Other recorded species wereHirtella physophora, Tachigalia myrmecophila, Duroia sp.,Tococa sp., andCordia nodosa. Little variability was found with respect to associated ants that inhabited the myrmecophytes, and mutual entropies indicated a high degree of mutualistic interactions. However, for the majority of myrmecophytes, no differences in herbivore damage levels could be attributed to the presence of ants, with onlyM. guianensis andT. myrmecophila demonstrating significantly lower damages when inhabited by ants. Their respective ant associates,Pheidole minitula andPseudomyrmex concolor, were thus the only plant-ants with a demonstrable ability to reduce the levels of herbivory in their host plant.  相似文献

Many island plants are characterized by unique morphology. For example, the high branching angles and small leaves of divaricate plants are a common feature of the New Zealand flora. The divaricate growth form may be an adaptation to deter browsing by extinct avian herbivores (moa); alternatively aspects of the insular climate may be responsible. However, our understanding of the selective pressures responsible for the high branching angles and small leaves of divaricate plants is incomplete. Here, I tested for differences in traits associated with the divaricate growth form between plants from Chatham Island and the New Zealand mainland. Moa never reached the Chatham Islands and its flora is derived from plants on mainland New Zealand. Therefore, I predicted Chatham Island plants to have lost morphological adaptations that may have deterred moa herbivory. Traits were quantified on 316 individuals in the field, allowing for 12 island‐mainland taxonomic comparisons. Chatham Island plants consistently produced smaller branching angles, larger leaves, shorter internodes and larger stems than related mainland plants. Results are therefore consistent with the hypothesis that selection for small leaves and high angled branching may be relaxed on the Chatham Islands due to an absence of moa. Smaller branching angles and larger leaves may offer a competitive advantage to Chatham Island plants.  相似文献

Insect herbivory of ovules and seeds is known to have a negative impact on individual plant reproductive success by reducing overall seed set. Although this seed set reduction has been well documented in plant populations found in native habitats, little work has been done on populations found in restored habitats. In a 4-year study (2001–2004), I investigated the herbivory of the Gelechiid moth ( Coleotechnites eryngiella ) of Eryngium yuccifolium populations in native and restored prairies. Data were collected from 20 E. yuccifolium populations (10 native prairies/10 restored prairies) in Illinois. Percent herbivory and percent seed set were determined for each population. From 2001 to 2004, percent herbivory in prairie restorations ranged from 0 to 93 and percent seed set ranged from 2 to 82. In native prairies, percent herbivory ranged from 0 to 98 and percent seed set ranged from 0 to 71. No differences were found between native and restored prairies for percent herbivory or percent seed set. However, significant differences were found among years for percent seed set. This study shows that the antagonistic effects of insect herbivory can reach similar levels in restored and native prairies.  相似文献

Tropical monodominant forests in which one tree species dominates the canopy occur in all three major tropical regions, but few studies have focused on the mechanisms responsible for dominance. This study tests the hypothesis that relative to other species in the community, dominant species are well defended and escape herbivore and pathogen damage. We surveyed the rate of damage on young expanding leaves of seedlings and saplings belonging to eight species within both monodominant Gilbertiodendron dewevrei forests and adjacent mixed–species forests in eastern Congo. Results showed that escape from herbivore and pathogen damage is not a mechanism by which Gilbertiodendron achieves dominance, as it suffered the highest damage level of any species surveyed. Similarly, other sub–dominant common species also suffered high rates of damage. These results are discussed in relation to the phenolic, fiber, and nitrogen content of leaves, and in the context of current theories pertaining to plant–herbivore interactions.  相似文献

Many higher plants have shoot apical meristems that possess discrete cell layers, only one of which normally gives rise to gametes following the transition from vegetative meristem to floral meristem. Consequently, when mutations occur in the meristems of sexually reproducing plants, they may or may not have an evolutionary impact, depending on the apical layer in which they reside. In order to determine whether developmentally sequestered mutations could be released by herbivory (i.e., meristem destruction), a characterized genetic mosaic was subjected to simulated herbivory. Many plants develop two shoot meristems in the leaf axils of some nodes, here referred to as the primary and secondary axillary meristems. Destruction of the terminal and primary axillary meristems led to the outgrowth of secondary axillary meristems. Seed derived from secondary axillary meristems was not always descended from the second apical cell layer of the terminal shoot meristem as is expected for terminal and primary shoot meristems. Vegetative and reproductive analysis indicated that secondary meristems did not maintain the same order of cell layers present in the terminal shoot meristem. In secondary meristems reproductively sequestered cell layers possessing mutant cells can be repositioned into gamete-forming cell layers, thereby adding mutant genes into the gene pool. Herbivores feeding on shoot tips may influence plant evolution by causing the outgrowth of secondary axillary meristems.  相似文献

Does Mangrove Leaf Chemistry Help Explain Crab Herbivory Patterns?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We examined feeding by the mangrove tree crab Aratus pisonii in Tampa Bay, Florida, in relation to the percent dry weight of carbohydrate, protein, phenolics, condensed tannins, ash, carbon, nitrogen, carbonmitrogen ratio, water content, and sclerophylly for leaves of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle. Comparisons of leaf chemistry were made among leaves that experienced variable levels of crab damage. Because R. mangle is the crab's preferred food source based on damage patterns in the field, comparisons of R. mangle leaf chemistry were made in relation to that of the black mangrove Avicennia germinans and the white mangrove Laguncularia racemosa. We observed a negative relationship between level of leaf damage and percent dry weight of nitrogen, carbohydrates, condensed tannins, and sclerophylly. In contrast, a positive relationship was found between leaf damage and the carbon:nitrogen ratio. The chemical constituents that provided the best explanation for differences in damage among the three mangrove species include condensed tannins, nitrogen, carbon:nitrogen ratio, carbohydrates, phenolics, water content, and ash. The results from this study suggest that chemistry only partially explains food preference by A. pisonii. It appears that A. pisonii feeding behavior and preference may be influenced by a more complex series of factors and interactions, which may include reproduction by, predation on, and interspecific competition with A. pisonii.  相似文献

1. Although leaf morphology and chemistry show profound changes as trees age, the consequences of such changes to herbivory have received little attention, particularly late in the ontogeny of canopy trees. 2. Using a mobile aerial lift for canopy access, patterns of leaf damage were evaluated in canopy‐dominant mature sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh) trees ranging from ~20 to 70 cm in diameter, corresponding to an age range of ~40–180 years. 3. Herbivore damage patterns varied in relation to both vertical canopy position (among upper‐, mid‐, and lower‐canopy positions) and with tree size. Damage types attributable to herbivores active on leaf surfaces, including leaf skeletonizers and leaf cutters (both principally Lepidoptera), and leaf stippling inducers (Hemiptera) showed decreases with tree size, and with increasing height in the canopy. In contrast, leaf damage from the most abundant gall‐forming arthropod in the system, the eriophyid mite Vasates aceriscrumena, increased markedly with tree size. 4. The results indicate that herbivory patterns vary with both canopy stratum and with tree size in sugar maple, and that the relative strength of vertical stratification and tree ontogeny effects are similar in magnitude. The predominant patterns are of a decrease in herbivory with increasing height in the canopy and with tree size, but certain galling arthropods exhibit the reverse trends.  相似文献
