Abstract German wasps (Vespula germanica F.) and common wasps (V. vulgaris L.) both show variations in colour markings in New Zealand. Overlap in the ranges of markings of the head and thorax is limited enough for ready distinction of queens and workers of the two species. Abdominal markings overlap considerably between the species. Colour markings of males were too similar to identify the species, which were completely separated by the shape of their genitalia. The frequency of occurrence of “intermediate” markings in V. germanica populations did not increase in areas where the two species overlap. This suggests there is little or no genetic exchange between the two species. 相似文献

Hymenopterans are an important model for studying the evolution of cooperation in animal societies. Here, we characterize 19 microsatellite loci, isolated from the common wasp Vespula vulgaris, that can be used to study genetic variation in three genera (seven species) within the Vespidae. The number of alleles in V. vulgaris was moderate, varying from 2 to 14, with expected heterozygosity ranging between 0.04 and 0.93. Eleven loci amplified DNA in V. austriaca and Dolichovespula sylvestris, nine in V. germanica, eight in Vespa crabro and V. rufa, seven in D. media and only five loci could be used for D. norwegica. 相似文献

A total of 107 forms of 88 eumenine wasp species occurring in the Far East were used to produce a more comprehensive picture of the geographical pattern of wasps in the Far East. All forms occurring in the Far East were biogeographically classified into 22 types in four larger categories, and a summarized table and discussion are presented. The eumenine wasp fauna of the Far East was characterized as a mixture of a fair number of endemic elements, a moderate number of transpalearctic elements, and some Oriental elements. The endemism of the Far East reached 0.71 at the species/subspecies level when the calculation was based on true Palearctic elements occurring in Far Eastern Russia, the Korean peninsula and Japan proper. The relationship between the Far Eastern fauna and the Central/Western Palearctic faunas was also analyzed and discussed. The species occurring in each treated district was counted, and provides evidence for the importance of the Korean fauna in biodiversity evaluation/estimation of Far Eastern fauna. The similarity index between the Korean Peninsula and Japan proper, the Korean Peninsula and the Russian Far East, and the Russian Far East and Japan proper was calculated to explain possible factors for faunal formation in the Far East. The distributional pattern of each form treated in this study and its relatives is tabulated in Appendix I. 相似文献

We offered prey consisting of the rotifers, cladocerans, copepods, amphipods, dipterans and ephemeropterans to the pre-starved and sorted in three size groups of naiads of Rhionaeschna multicolour (Hagen, 1861) in the presence of the macrophyte Egeria densa Planchon and without it. The naiads consumed up to 25 prey items or in terms of biomass (wet weight) up to 7 mg within 2 h. Biomass intake increased with increasing predator's size. Prey consumption was significantly lower in presence of plants. The cladocerans Ceriodaphnia dubia Rihcard, 1894, Daphnia mendotae (Taylor and Hebert, 1993) and Ilyocryptus sp. were consistently preferred by the dragonfly naiads while Simocephalus vetulus (Müller, 1776), Alona guttata Sars, 1862 and Scapholeberis kingi Sars, 1888 were avoided with and without macrophytes. This study suggests that dragonfly naiads structure the zooplankton community by selective feeding. 相似文献

Abstract Carbohydrates are both a source of food and a potential bait for control of common and German wasps. Carbohydrate preferences of wasps were determined in a series of paired trials by counting the number of wasps caught in traps baited with carbohydrate‐based baits versus a standard protein‐based bait. Factors influencing wasp attraction to carbohydrate‐based baits included bait type, season, weather, and location. A 30% sucrose solution was more attractive than honey, jams, gels, or dry (solid) sugars. The sucrose solution was more attractive in spring and autumn than in summer, probably because rainfall washed away natural carbohydrate supplies. There was a significant relationship between rainfall in the previous week and the proportion of wasps caught in traps baited with sucrose solution versus sardine cat‐food. A higher proportion of German wasps than common wasps was caught in sucrose‐baited traps. This may have been related to seasonal differences in abundance and/or behavioural differences between the two species. In some locations, more wasps were caught in traps baited with sucrose solution than in those baited with sardine cat‐food. The proportion of wasps caught in sucrose‐baited traps was higher in locations without beech scale honeydew than with beech scale honey‐dew. Proportionally more non‐target species (mainly honey bees) and fewer wasps were caught in traps baited with sucrose solution than in those baited with sardine cat‐food. All five bee repellents tested also repelled wasps. These results indicate the importance of determining the bait preferences of wasps (carbohydrate or protein) and the presence of non‐target species before attempting a poison‐baiting operation. They also emphasise the need for a wasp‐specific carbohydrate‐based bait. 相似文献

Females of the social wasp, Belonogaster petiolata, rub the secretion of van der Vecht's gland, located on their terminal gastral sternite, onto the nest pedicel. In bioassays, the secretion was repellent to two species of ants, while shortchain acids were effective releasers of rubbing behavior. Rubbing was associated with pedicel enlargement and departure from the nest in preemergence colonies. Its frequency was high where wasps were often exposed to ants and low where ants were rare or absent. Rubbing also decreased significantly from the pre-to the postemergence stage of the colony cycle. In both stages, subordinate foundresses rubbed more often than queens or workers. These observations support the hypothesis that rubbing behavior and the secretion of van der Vecht's gland function in chemical defense of the nest against ant predation. The general morphology of the gland in B. petiolataresembles that of the four other independent-founding polistine wasp genera. 相似文献

Although they are defending mating territories, territory residents of a wide variety of insect species have been observed to pursue heterospecifics in addition to the conspecifics that intrude on their territories. One species that has such heterospecific pursuits is the Eastern amberwing dragonfly (Perithemis tenera Say) (Anisoptera: Libellulidae). In this study, we tested five alternative hypotheses for the function of heterospecific pursuits in amberwings: competition for resources, prevention of interference while mating, predator deterrence, foraging, and mistaken identity. Resident males pursued both male and female conspecifics, as well as a species of horse fly (Tabanus spp.) and butterfly (Ancyloxypha numitor). Other intruding odonates, including Epitheca princeps, Erythemis simplicicollis, Libellula luctuosa, Pachydiplax longipennis, and Plathemis lydia, were relatively ignored. Because the horse fly and butterfly were similar to amberwings in body size, color, and flight height, and because they are not predators or prey of amberwings, we concluded that the pursuit of these heterospecifics was due to mistaken identity. The characteristics of the horsefly and butterfly likely correspond to the cues that the male amberwings use to identify conspecifics, and the relative rarity of intrusions by these two species (as well as by female amberwings) probably made it more costly to discriminate and pursue only conspecifics than to make some mistaken pursuits. 相似文献

Some myrmecophilous animals show myrmecomorphy, however, its adaptive significance is still controversial. We investigated
a possible benefit of Batesianmimicry between a myrmecophilous staphylinid beetle, Pella comes, and its host ant, Lasius (Dendrolasius) spathepus, by using a common ant predator, the Japanese treefrog, Hyla japonica. In the field, H. japonica were found to feed on numerous ants and other insects, but in laboratory experiments they refused feeding on L. spathepus. L. spathepus was highly repellent to these frogs, while P. comes was potentially palatable. After repeated contacts with L. spathepus which led to its avoidance the treefrogs started to reject P. comes as well . This suggests that myrmecomorphy is beneficial to P. comes, reducing the risk of predation, and that it , may represent a case of Batesian mimicry. may represent a case of Batesian
mimicry.

Summary Female wasps of the tropical primitively eusocial speciesRopalidia marginata are known to discriminate unfamiliar nestmates from unfamiliar non-nestmates outside the context of their nests. Here, we show that when foreign conspecifics are introduced in the context of a nest in laboratory cages, genetic relatives among them are treated by nest inhabitants more tolerantly than non-relatives, but that no foreign conspecifics are accepted into the nests. However, some wasps may leave their nest and join the foreign relatives and non-relatives to found new colonies cooperatively. Very few of the introduced animals are severely attacked or killed; most are allowed to remain in parts of the cage away from the nest. These results suggest that factors other than genetic relatedness may be involved in regulating tolerance and acceptance of foreign conspecifics on a nest and its vicinity. Our results are different from those of similar experiments with ants, which have demonstrated that former nestmates that are removed as pupae and later introduced as adults are either accepted into the nest or attacked and killed. We attribute this difference to the fact that in a primitively eusocial species such asR. marginata, the rules governing tolerance and acceptance of foreign conspecifics must be quite different from those in highly eusocial species. We also attempt to test some predictions of the conspecific acceptance threshold models of Reeve (Am. Nat. 133:407–435, 1989). Our results uphold the predictions of his fitness consequence submodel but do not support those of his interaction frequency sub-model. 相似文献

Functional response type and predatory parameters of Macrolophus pygmaeus and Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae), the two important predators widely used in IPM programmes at tomato greenhouses, were investigated. The predators fed on Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) or Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs. Different densities of prey eggs including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 (latest only for E. kuehniella) were used at laboratory conditions. The results showed that both predatory bugs had type II functional response. Also, predation indices were significantly different between the predators. Although N. tenuis was more efficient against T. absoluta eggs than M. pygmaeus, M. pygmaeus predatory indices showed that this predator was more efficient on E. kuehniella eggs. Thus, minimum and maximum attack rate were observed in N. tenuis fed on E. kuehniella (0.0871 h?1) and T. absoluta (0.2514 h?1) eggs, respectively. Whilst, the minimum and maximum handling time were observed in M. pygmaeus fed on E. kuehniella (1.8695 h) and T. absoluta (2.7415 h) eggs, respectively. 相似文献

The phenology of aculeate Hymenoptera and of syrphids which are believed to mimic them has been investigated at three semi-natural ancient woodland sites in north-west England. It is concluded that the abundance and phenology of most of the hoverflies is consistent with their being Batesian mimics of particular species of bee or wasp. The main exceptions are Eristalis spp., Helophilus spp., Syrphus spp. and Episyrphus balteatus which are often much more abundant than their supposed models. These four taxa may still benefit from mimicry, but further research is needed to confirm this. With the possible exceptions of Eristalis pertinax and E. tenax , there is no strong evidence from north-west England in support of Waldbauer's hypothesis that mimics are rare when fledgling birds are abundant but may be commoner in autumn and spring. The data also indicate that mimics which closely resemble their models (specific mimics) are usually rarer than their models, whereas mimics with a less precise resemblance (non-specific mimics) are often commoner than models. 相似文献

This study was carried out at the Parque Municipal das Araucárias, in the municipality of Guarapuava, state of Paraná, southern Brazil. The aims of the present study were to access the spectrum of wasp species inhabiting trap-nests in three habitats, to record their richness and diversity and elucidate the process responsible for their composition and abundance and to investigate if there is difference in their diversity between Brazilian tropical and subtropical regions. A total of 1097 nests, belonging to 21 species of solitary wasps, were collected. Of these, nine belonged to the family Vespidae (42.86%), six to Pompilidae (28.57%), four to Crabronidae (19.05%) and two to Sphecidae (9.52%). Crabronidae was the most abundant family in the samplings, with a total of 927 collected nests (84.3%). The environment that presented the greatest species diversity, richness and evenness was the grassland areas. Using the Bray–Curtis coefficient (beta diversity), the greatest similarity, in relation to species abundance, occurred between swamp and grasslands. In contrast, the araucaria forest was the habitat with the greatest dissimilarity, a result corroborated by the correspondence analysis. 相似文献

Despite being considered a classical example of protective Batesian mimicry hoverflies (Syrphidae) are known to be preyed
upon by various passerines. The aim of the present study was to examine in detail food brought by reed warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus to their nests to better understand the importance of hoverflies in the diet of small passerines. Using neck collars, 273
food samples containing 8,545 food items delivered to reed warbler and parasitic common cuckoo Cuculus canorus nestlings in warbler nests were recorded. The study was conducted during three breeding seasons in South Moravia, Czech Republic.
An unusually high diversity of hoverflies was found — 27 species, including Mesembrius peregrinus (critically endangered species in the Czech Republic) and Mallota cimbiciformis (endangered species) — a new taxon to the Czech Republic. This indicates that nestling diet analyses may provide not only
information on avian foraging behaviour but also important faunistic data. Thus, without the detailed identification to species
level of material from foraging behaviour studies valuable scientific information may be lost. Overall dominance of Syrphidae
was 3.7%, the most common species being Episyrphus balteatus (55.7%, n = 318). However, this number seriously underestimates the importance of hoverflies in the diet of reed warblers as hoverflies
are one of the largest prey taken by warblers. Both larvae and pupae were rare, imagines strongly dominating (92.7%). Both
specific wasp mimics (e.g., Chrysotoxum verrali) and bee mimics (e.g., Eristalis spp.) were not avoided by foraging reed warblers. The presence of a parasitic cuckoo chick did not affect host foraging behaviour
with respect to overall dominance of hoverflies in the diet (warbler 3.3%, cuckoo 3.8%). 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 Despite apparent directional sexual selection in favour of large body size, males of the anthophorine bee Centris pallida remain highly variable in body size.
- 2 One possible cause of persistent size variation among males is geographic variation in the extent of the large male mating advantage. However, a study of a population in an area not previously investigated revealed that the large male mating advantage was as strong here as it has been elsewhere in other years.
- 3 Although the reproductive benefits of being large were consistent in populations separated spatially and temporally, the intensity of bird predation on mate-searching males varied greatly between locations.
- 4 The bee-killing birds focused exclusively on bees which were digging down to meet emerging females or fighting on the ground, never on flying males. Males which were collected on the ground by hand (to simulate avian predation) were significantly larger on average than flying males collected by sweep netting.
- 5 Therefore, in some location in some years, sexual selection in favour of large body size may be opposed by natural selection exerted by predators, perhaps contributing to the maintenance of size variation in this bee.

The red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta (Buren), are generally considered pests. They have also been viewed as beneficial predators feeding on other insect pests of various agroecosystems. This study documents the foraging habits of fire ants in a sweetpotato field in Mississippi. Fire ant foraging trails connecting outside colonies to a sweetpotato field were exposed and foraging ants moving out of the field toward the direction of the colony were collected along with the solid food particles they were carrying. The food material was classified as arthropod or plant in origin. The arthropod particles were identified to orders. Fire ant foragers carried more arthropods than plant material. Coleoptera and Homoptera were the most abundant groups preyed upon. These insect orders contain various economically important pests of sweetpotato. Other major hexapod groups included the orders Hemiptera, Diptera and Collembola. The quantity of foraged material varied over the season. No damage to sweetpotato roots could be attributed to fire ant feeding. Imported fire ant foraging may reduce the number of insect pests in sweetpotato fields. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments were performed to determine the potential of dominant spider species in winter wheat in Germany,Erigone atra (Blackwall),Lepthyphantes tenuis (Blackwall) andPardosa agrestis (Westring) adults and youngs, in suppressing the population ofRhopalosiphum padi (L.) on wheat plants and their functional response to different aphid densities. The presence of spiders significantly caused between 34 and 58% reduction in aphid population development on wheat plants compared to the aphid population in the absence of spiders. The functional response curves for these spiders as predators ofR. padi seem to descrive a typical type II functional response with the prey consumed increasing to a plateau as aphid densities increased. Prey killed without eating was linear on prey density. 相似文献

Nest surface hydrocarbons facilitate nestmate recognition for the social wasp,Polistes metricus Say (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Nestmate recognition was observed inPolistes metricus Say workers only if the workers were exposed to their nest surface hydrocarbons after eclosion. If the newly emerged workers were never exposed to the nest hydrocarbons as adults, they showed no discrimination between nestmates and nonnestmates. Furthermore, the newly emerged workers were accepted more readily by their experienced nestmates than by experienced nonnestmates only if the newly emerged wasps had been exposed to the nest surface hydrocarbons. This reciprocal recognition implies that the nest recognition cues are nest surface hydrocarbons that are learned and that may be acquired byP. metricus workers as adults on the natal nest. 相似文献
