The abundance, biomass, and life history traits of Mysis relicta were evaluated in the spring, summer, and autumn of 2000 at 8 nearshore (45 m) and 8 offshore (75–110 m) stations throughout central and southern Lake Michigan. Abundance was also evaluated on a smaller scale during June 2000 at 4 nearshore and 4 offshore stations in southeastern Lake Michigan. For large-scale sampling, the abundance of M. relicta did not differ among locations in the spring. In the summer and autumn the abundance of M. relicta was similar among offshore stations with the exception of one station each season; for nearshore stations, abundance was generally highest off Pentwater, Michigan. The abundance of mysids was not consistently high for central or southern basin sites, although overall biomass was higher in the southern basin each season. Abundance of Mysis was positively correlated with bottom depth, but not with bottom water temperature, surface water temperature, or mean chlorophyll concentration. Within the smaller region in southeast Lake Michigan, the abundance of M. relicta differed among locations for both nearshore and offshore stations. Brood size and size of reproductive females did not differ among lake wide locations, but the proportion of females with broods and the size distribution of M. relicta did.  相似文献

Vagile large juvenile and adult fishes are often under-represented in traditional sampling of Sargassum–associated fishes in the open ocean. We used underwater video recordings from free-floating camcorders and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to assess the relative abundance of large mobile fishes under large Sargassum mats (> 10 m diameter), under dispersed clumps of Sargassum (< 1 m diameter), and in open water without Sargassum as a reference. In addition, we conducted dipnet sampling in each Sargassum treatment for a comparison to traditional methods. All samples were obtained in September 1992 along the western wall of the Gulf Stream off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. A total of 31 fish taxa were identified from both video and dipnet collections. Only 8 taxa were identified in both video and dipnet collections, while 11 taxa were seen only in video and 10 were only found in dipnet collections. Dipnet collections were dominated by juvenile balistids and other small, cryptic fishes, while the video observations were mainly of larger, rapidly-moving carangids. Fish diversity increased with the amount of continuous Sargassum habitat: four taxa were observed when no Sargassum was present, 12 under clumps, and 19 under mats. Our results indicated that mat morphology significantly affects the Sargassum–associated fishes, and that both video and traditional capture methods are complementary and should be used together to accurately census this community.  相似文献

We used electrophoretically identified material to assess the geographical distributions, life cycles and interspecific hybridization of two sibling species of the Mysis relicta species group (sp. I and sp. II) in the northern Baltic region. In the Gulf of Finland, sp. I prevails in inshore waters and sp. II in the open sea; the distributions overlap in the outer archipelago zone. In the Gulf of Bothnia, only sp. II was found in the southern part (Bothnian Sea), whereas the two species coexist throughout the northerly Bothnian Bay. Both the local and large-scale distributions are salinity-related, but salinity alone does not explain the differences. The two species exhibit different patterns of geographical variation in their life histories. In strict sympatry in the north they have identical two-year life cycles with winter breeding. Further south (Gulf of Finland), sp. I exhibits a predominantly one-year winter-breeding cycle, whereas sp. II breeds throughout the year. The patterns comply with the concept of a great phenotypic flexibility and environmental control of life history characteristics in the Mysis relicta group, and make a contrast to the stable life cycle of the congeneric M. mixta. F1 hybrids between the two M. relicta group species were found at a low frequency (0.6%) in the Bothnian Bay, but not in other areas of sympatry. To determine whether the current classification of the flathead trout Salmo (Platysalmo) platycephalus , endemic to the upper reaches of the Zamanti River system, Turkey, based solely on morphology, is in congruence with molecular phylogeny, the nucleotide sequence variation in mitochondrial (control region and cytochrome b gene) and nuclear (internal transcribed spacer of rRNA genes) DNA for the flathead trout and various representatives of the genus Salmo was studied. On the basis of pair‐wise genetic distance estimates, the highest differences were found to exist between the flathead trout and S. salar , S. ohridana and S. obtusirostris , whereas the differences between the flathead trout and S. trutta were minimal. All the analyses performed firmly positioned the flathead trout within the Adriatic phylogeographic lineage of S. trutta ; however, the exact position of the flathead trout within the Adriatic cluster was irresolvable. Accordingly, classifying the flathead trout as a subgenus of Salmo is unjustifiable and its reclassification in a lower taxonomic category is suggested by the present study.  相似文献

Mysis relicta was sampled intensively along a depth profilein Lake Snåsavatnet using benthic trawls and verticalnet hauls. Samples were made around 12.00 and 24.00 h in May,June, August and September 1984. The light regime and temperaturewere also recorded. Mysis relicta showed a size-dependent diurnalvertical migration and seasonal benthic horizontal migrationbetween shallow and deep areas. The young individuals left themarsupium in spring while the adults were staying benthic inshallow areas. As they grew in size the young individuals changedhabitat, migrating into the pelagic zone and the deeper benthicareas. Mysis showed a bimodal vertical distribution patternon our deepwater station, with one density peak in the watercolumn and another along the bottom both day and night betweenMay and September. The bimodal distribution pattern is discussedin relation to the light regime and an asynchronic verticalmigration model. The density of Mysis was low in the pelagiczone compared to the shallow benthic area throughout the samplingperiod. Together with the difference in distribution patternin the pelagic and benthic zones, this may influence the distributionpattern of salinonids which seek Mysis as a food item in LakeSnåsavatnet.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 Biomass, production and life history of Mysis relicta were studied in the large Lake Mjøsa during the years 1976–80. Biomass fluctuations were large, but biomass averaged about 1 g wet wt m?2 or 200 ind. m?2. Cumulative net production during summer ranged from 1.6 to 2.1 g wet wt m?2. Mean population P/B-ratio was close to 2.
  • 2 Neither production or biomass of Mysis were correlated with the biomass of phytoplankton or the main Zooplankton prey species (Daphnia and Bosmina), suggesting a predominant ‘top down’ control of Mysis in this lake.
  • 3 The life cycle was well synchronized with development of food items, but predation pressure also affected life-history patterns. The proportion of juveniles apparently increased in years with strong fish predation pressure, producing a predominantly 1-year life-cycle pattern the following year.
  • 4 Mysis had a predominant 2-year life history, but a traction of the population may reproduce after 1 or 3 years. Reproduction occurred exclusively during winter. Even in such a large and stable system, where Mysis has coexisted with its main food items and predators for 8–10 000 years, a flexible life history is maintained and is probably an important buffer against year-to-year fluctuations in food and predator abundance.

We examined the sub-ice algal community in the Chukchi Sea during June 1998 using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Ice algae were observed on the under-ice surface at all ten stations (from 70°29′N to 72°26′N; 162°00′W to 153°56′W) and varied in abundance and distribution from small aggregations limited to depressions in the ice to nets, curtains and strands of Melosira. There was no relationship between percent cover of sub-ice algae and physical factors at the kilometer scale, but at the scale of individual ice floes the percent cover of sub-ice algae was positively correlated with distance from the floe edge and negatively correlated with snow depth. A significant positive relationship between the concentration of sediment pigments and percent cover of sub-ice could indicate a coupling between ice algal and benthic systems. Pieces of ice algae that appeared to be Melosira were observed on the seafloor to a depth of over 100 m and cells or spores of obligate ice algal taxa were collected from sediments from 44-m to 1,000-m deep. The large biomass of sub-ice algae observed at many stations in the Chukchi Sea and the presence of ice algae on the seafloor indicates that the distribution and abundance of sub-ice algae needs to be understood if we are to evaluate the role of ice algae in the Arctic marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Conventional methods for measuring zooplankton distributionsare too laborious and time consuming to permit sufficient temporaland spatial resolution in many instances. An ability to makemore efficient and precise measurements would be useful. Weevaluated the potential for using the video system of a commerciallyavailable remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to measure the distributionand abundance of zooplankton by calibrating ROV counts withcounts based on a conventional sampling procedure (a Schindlertrap), and by using an ROV to measure the density of zooplanktonin a small lake. As configured here, this particular ROV wassuitable for measuring the density of the cladocerans Daphniaand Holopedium. It was also suitable for assessing the distribution,but not absolute densities, of Chaoborus and Leptodora. Imagequality was inadequate for quantitative estimates of copepod(Diaptomus minutus) abundance, and prevented us from studyingbehavioral responses of copepods to the vehicle. We concludethat the ROV has at least three useful features: it can be usedto locate patches of those species that are imaged effectively;a large number of samples (videotapes) can be collected almostsynoptically with high spatial resolution; the ROV enables insitu observation of zooplankton. The ROV also has three importantlimitations: the small image volume makes it difficult to studyrare organisms; inadequate image resolution precludes studiesof relatively small organisms (e.g. the calanoid copepod D.minutus);zooplankton respond to the presence of the ROV.  相似文献

As part of the SERPENT Project, five observations of apparently healthy oarfish Regalecus glesne by remotely operated vehicles are reported from the northern Gulf of Mexico. Regalecus glesne were observed between 2008 and 2011 at depths from within the epipelagic and mesopelagic zones. These observations include the deepest verified record of R. glesne (463–492 m) and the first record of an arthropod ectoparasite (isopod).  相似文献

1. Life history, fecundity and energy ingestion were compared for non-native Mysis relicta in Flathead Lake, Montana, and in Waterton Lake, Montana/Alberta, where the mysid is native. 2. Based on estimates from stomach contents, M. relicta in Flathead Lake consumed three to four times more energy per hour while foraging than M. relicta from Waterton Lake. The primary prey of M. relicta in Flathead Lake was Daphnia thorata. Diaptomus sicilis was the primary prey for M. relicta in Waterton Lake. 3. Mysis relicta in Flathead Lake had a 1-year life history. It took 2 years for M. relicta in Waterton Lake to complete a generation. Mysis relicta from Flathead Lake produced significantly (P < 0.05) more eggs per female (19.9 ± 4.7) compared to M. relicta in Waterton Lake (13.7 ± 3.6). The lipid content in eggs from M. relicta in Flathead Lake was also significantly (P < 0.05) higher than eggs from M. relicta in Waterton Lake. 4. In Flathead Lake, M. relicta is able effectively to exploit Daphnia thorata, consuming greater biomass than M. relicta in Waterton Lake. Mysis relicta efficiently assimilates the greater biomass, which reduces generation time, increases fecundity, and increases lipid reserves of offspring. These results provide evidence of energetic mechanisms that enable M. relicta to colonize and affect foodwebs when introduced into lakes.  相似文献

Underwater sound and video observations were made at noon, sunset, and midnight in sand, gravel, and boulder habitat in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, Gulf of Maine, USA in October 2001 using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Seventeen species of fish and squid were observed with clear habitat and time differences. Observations of feeding behavior, disturbance behavior, and both interspecific and intraspecific interactions provided numerous opportunities for potential sound production; however, sounds were recorded only during a single dive. Although high noise levels generated by the ROV and support ship may have masked some sounds, we conclude that fish sound production in the Gulf of Maine during the fall is uncommon. The recorded fish sounds are tentatively attributed to the cusk Brosme brosme. Cusk sounds consisted variously of isolated thumps, widely spaced thump trains, drumrolls, and their combinations. Frequency peaks were observed at 188, 539, and 1195 Hz. Use of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) as a passive acoustic observation platform was problematic due to high ROV self-noise and the ROV's inability to maintain a fixed position on the bottom without thruster power. Some fishes were clearly also disturbed by ROV noise, indicating a potential ROV sampling bias. Based on our observations, we suggest that new instruments incorporating both optic and passive acoustic technologies are needed to provide better tools for in situ behavioral studies of cusk and other fishes [Current Zoology 56 (1): 90-99 2010].  相似文献

Mysis introductions to the lakes of western North America have shown they are important predators on zooplankton, especially daphnids, and intercept energy flows that would otherwise be available to pelagic fishes. However, understanding of the ecological roles of Mysis within invaded communities following their establishment remains weak. We analyzed zooplankton and phytoplankton data collected from Okanagan Lake, British Columbia, within a time-series framework to evaluate the strength of ecological interactions between Mysis and the other dominant plankton. Top-down effects of Mysis in the plankton community were only detected on cyclopoid copepods and cyanophytes. Mysis dynamics were mostly driven by bottom-up effects from diatoms and from small cladocerans whose dynamics were driven primarily by the abundance of edible phytoplankton. This result supports the growing appreciation of the importance of omnivory in mysids and was consistent between the two main basins of the lake. We also analyzed published stable C and N isotope data from the plankton of Okanagan Lake with an isotope mixing model to estimate the relative importance of various potential energy sources to Mysis. This analysis supported the time-series results suggesting the importance of diatoms and small zooplankton to Mysis. However, the isotopes also suggested important resource flows from Daphnia to Mysis, an interaction not detected in the time-series analysis. Taken together, these results suggest that Mysis is a strong interactor in the Okanagan Lake food web, relying in part on energy flow through Daphnia. However, subsidies from diatoms likely decouple seasonal Mysis population dynamics from the seasonal population dynamics of Daphnia.  相似文献

The role of compensatory mechanisms in the population dynamics of lake trout in the Michigan waters of Lake Superior was explored during three time periods: the pre-sea lamprey period, prior to 1950 when lake trout were at a relatively high abundance and the fishery was the primary source of lake trout mortality; the sea lamprey dominant period, from 1951 to 1961 when lake trout were at a very low abundance due to sea lamprey predation and overexploitation; and currently, from 1985 to 1993 when wild lake trout abundance was at a moderate level. The role of compensatory changes in growth and fecundity rates of lake trout in the Michigan waters of Lake Superior was evaluated using a life table approach. Individual growth and fecundity rates were calculated and compared between time periods. These rates were used to determine age-specific fecundity which, along with age-specific survival, were incorporated into a Leslie projection matrix to calculate the finite rate of population increase (λ). Individual growth rates and age-specific fecundity rates changed in response to the different levels of lake trout abundance during each of the study periods. Lake trout during the sea lamprey dominant period, which experienced the lowest abundance and highest mortality levels, exhibited the fastest individual growth rates and the highest age-specific fecundity. These high rates contributed to the relatively large compensatory scope exhibited by lake trout during the sea lamprey dominant period as compared to lake trout during the pre-sea lamprey or the current periods which are associated with higher levels of abundance.  相似文献

1. Oligotrophic lakes are generally dominated by calanoid copepods because of their competitive advantage over cladocerans at low prey densities. Planktivory also can alter zooplankton community structure. We sought to understand the role of planktivory in driving recent changes to the zooplankton community of Lake Huron, a large oligotrophic lake on the border of Canada and the United States. We tested the hypothesis that excessive predation by fish (rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax, bloater Coregonus hoyi) and invertebrates (Mysis relicta, Bythotrephes longimanus) had driven observed declines in cladoceran and cyclopoid copepod biomass between 2002 and 2007. 2. We used a field sampling and bioenergetics modelling approach to generate estimates of daily consumption by planktivores at two 91‐m depth sites in northern Lake Huron, U.S.A., for each month, May–October 2007. Daily consumption was compared to daily zooplankton production. 3. Bythotrephes was the dominant planktivore and estimated to have eaten 78% of all zooplankton consumed. Bythotrephes consumption exceeded total zooplankton production between July and October. Mysis consumed 19% of all the zooplankton consumed and exceeded zooplankton production in October. Consumption by fish was relatively unimportant – eating only 3% of all zooplankton consumed. 4. Because Bythotrephes was so important, we explored other consumption estimation methods that predict lower Bythotrephes consumption. Under this scenario, Mysis was the most important planktivore, and Bythotrephes consumption exceeded zooplankton production only in August. 5. Our results provide no support for the hypothesis that excessive fish consumption directly contributed to the decline of cladocerans and cyclopoid copepods in Lake Huron. Rather, they highlight the importance of invertebrate planktivores in structuring zooplankton communities, especially for those foods webs that have both Bythotrephes and Mysis. Together, these species occupy the epi‐, meta‐ and hypolimnion, leaving limited refuge for zooplankton prey.  相似文献

Retinal visual and screening pigments of two populations (one marine and the other freshwater) of the opossum shrimp Mysis relicta Lovén (Crustacea, Mysidacea), which have different ocular tolerance to light, was investigated. Visual pigments were extracted by detergent and their bleaching difference spectra were determined. The difference between the visual pigment absorption maximum of the two populations correlated with their difference in spectral sensitivity. Using buffer or neutral methanol, a yellow pigment was extracted which had absorption maxima at 440 nm and 325 nm and bright blue fluorescence (λmax 415 nm). A screening pigment (ommochrome) with maximum at 525 nm was extracted by acid methanol, and was probably related to the group of ommines. The eyes of the lake population had 1.8–2.7 times less of this pigment than the eyes of the sea population. The sea population is more resistant to photo-induced accumulation of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in eye tissues. This resistance may be due to the higher ommochrome content. The restoration and rehabilitation of the native fish communities is a long-term goal for the Laurentian Great Lakes. In Lake Superior, the ongoing restoration of the native lake trout populations is now regarded as one of the major success stories in fisheries management. However, populations of the deepwater morphotype (siscowet lake trout) have increased much more substantially than those of the nearshore morphotype (lean lake trout), and the ecosystem now contains an assemblage of exotic species such as sea lamprey, rainbow smelt, and Pacific salmon (chinook, coho, and steelhead). Those species play an important role in defining the constraints and opportunities for ecosystem management. We combined an equilibrium mass balance model (Ecopath) with a dynamic food web model (Ecosim) to evaluate the ecological consequences of future alternative management strategies and the interaction of two different sets of life history characteristics for fishes at the top of the food web. Relatively rapid turnover rates occur among the exotic forage fish, rainbow smelt, and its primary predators, exotic Pacific salmonids. Slower turnover rates occur among the native lake trout and burbot and their primary prey—lake herring, smelt, deepwater cisco, and sculpins. The abundance of forage fish is a key constraint for all salmonids in Lake Superior. Smelt and Mysis play a prominent role in sustaining the current trophic structure. Competition between the native lake trout and the exotic salmonids is asymmetric. Reductions in the salmon population yield only a modest benefit for the stocks of lake trout, whereas increased fishing of lake trout produces substantial potential increases in the yields of Pacific salmon to recreational fisheries. The deepwater or siscowet morphotype of lake trout has become very abundant. Although it plays a major role in the structure of the food web it offers little potential for the restoration of a valuable commercial or recreational fishery. Even if a combination of strong management actions is implemented, the populations of lean (nearshore) lake trout cannot be restored to pre-fishery and pre-lamprey levels. Thus, management strategy must accept the ecological constraints due in part to the presence of exotics and choose alternatives that sustain public interest in the resources while continuing the gradual progress toward restoration. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratio analyses were used to characterize the primary energy sources and trophic positions of 16 common Lake Superior wave zone invertebrate species. Isotope data from six tributary species that were taxonomically and ecologically matched with common wave zone species revealed broad energetic separation between these similarly structured benthic food webs. Previously published stable isotope data for Lake Superior wetland and pelagic food webs were used to assess the relative importance of inter-habitat energy flow within the Lake Superior ecosystem. The results of these comparisons indicate that the Lake Superior wave zone is energetically distinct from its tributaries, wetlands, and to a lesser extent from its vast pelagic realm. This information and approach should prove useful in future studies on the bioenergetics of inter-zonal migrants and other species that forage in multiple habitats within the lake and also in revealing energetic connections among terrestrial, riverine, littoral, and pelagic food webs in the coastal ecosystems of Lake Superior.  相似文献

The highly endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is extremely difficult to study in the wild, and its numbers correspondingly difficult to estimate. Disturbance to the animals caused by trapping and radio-tracking may not only constitute an excessive risk to the population's viability, but may also yield biased data. The results of a pilot study are presented, which clearly show noninvasive genotyping to be a highly feasible and reliable alternative censusing method for L. krefftii. The protocol can identify individual wombats from single hairs collected remotely at burrow entrances, using: (i) a panel of microsatellite markers giving individual-specific genotypes; and (ii) a Y-linked sexing marker in combination with a single-copy X-linked amplification control. Using just the eight most variable microsatellites (of 20 available), only one in 200 pairs of full-sibs are predicted to share the same genotype. From 12 wombat hair samples collected on tape suspended over burrow entrances, three known female, two known male and an unknown wombat of each sex were identified. The approach will allow censusing of individuals that evade capture, and will also reveal some otherwise problematic aspects of the behaviour of this elusive animal.  相似文献
