Ulva cf. lactuca has been a disturbing competitor of experimental Gracilaria conferta outdoor cultures in Israel. The effect of environmental conditions on the competitive ability of Ulva versus Gracilaria, and the main limiting factors for which these seaweeds compete, were studied here. Single and biculture experiments of both seaweeds showed that Ulva outgrew and damaged Gracilaria under all irradiance and temperature combinations. The higher competitive ability of Ulva cf. lactuca in bicultures was not a result of responses to shading or nitrogen shortage, but rather to a shortage of available inorganic carbon, an increase in pH and apparent excretions of Ulva which inhibited the growth of Gracilaria.  相似文献

Several species of algae have been commercially harvested in New Zealand, mainly for extraction of agar and alginates. In the past, the harvest was comprised mostly of shore-cast plants. There has been more recent interest, however, in harvesting attached plants of Pterocladia spp., Porphyra spp., Gracilaria sordida, Durvillaea spp., Macrocystis pyrifera, and Ecklonia radiata. The ecological effects of harvesting attached algae depend largely on the sizes of plants, the season of removal, the patch size of clearances, and the proximity and identity of mature plants. These have not been well-studied for seaweeds in New Zealand, but population and life history studies indicate that harvesting methods affect the continuity of algal resources, at least on a local scale, and are crucial factors in their management.  相似文献

Three gracilarioid species, Gracilariopsis bailiniae and Gracilaria tenuistipitata from Vietnam and Gracilaria gracilis from Russia, were studied in order to determine whether Gracilaria gracilis might be a superior species for cultivation in brackish-water ponds for agar production compared with the Vietnamese species. The effects of different salinity levels on the growth rate and agar production as well as agar properties of three gracilarioid species were compared in controlled laboratory experiments. Gracilaria tenuistipitata and G. gracilis were tolerant to low salinity (∼10‰), whereas Gp. bailiniae died under these conditions. G. tenuistipitata showed superior growth among the three species examined. Gracilaria gracilis had the highest agar content [36.8–46.6% dry weight (dw)]. Agar yield from Vietnamese gracilarioids did not exceed 30% dw. Gel strength of native agar from Gracilaria gracilis was two-fold higher that from Vietnamese species (278 g cm−2 vs 130 g cm−2). Alkali pretreatment increased gel strength significantly for Gracilaria gracilis (1.4-fold), and G. tenuistipitata and Gp. bailiniae (2.3-fold) compared with native agar. The results suggest that Gracilaria gracilis may be a suitable species for production of reasonably good quality agar.  相似文献

Of the 1500 km coast of Namibia, only 80 km is predominantly rocky, the remaining 1420 km being sandy with only minor rocky outcrops. At present two species are utilized, Gracilaria verrucosa for agar and Laminaria schinzii for human consumption. Other potentially utilizable seaweeds occurring on the coast are Ecklonia maxima for alginates, Suhria vittata for agar, Gigartina radula, G. stiriata and Aeodes orbitosa for carrageenans and Porphyra capensis for human consumption. Laminaria schinzii also can be used for alginate production. Due to the diamond-mining areas around the 80 km rocky area at Luderitz (26° 39 S), only 20 km are accessible; hence, at present the seaweeds are being exploited almost to their full potential. The species currently not being utilized could be used, however, to support the industry that already exists at Luderitz. To increase production, access to the diamond areas would have to be gained or a cultivation program initiated.  相似文献

Agar properties of two potentially commercial important seaweeds from the Gulf of California were studied. Maximum yield in Gracilaria vermiculophylla (45.7%) occurred during the summer months, coinciding with high water temperatures (31°C) whereas minimum yields (11.6%) were obtained during the coldest months of the year when populations of this species diminish in the bay. Gracilariopsis longissima showed two yield peaks, one in spring and another in fall, before the maximum and minimum seawater temperatures. Gel strength in native agar from the two species was low (<22.5 g cm−2) for most of the year. G. vermiculophylla native agar showed a slight increase in gel strength from June to August, which were the hottest months. Maximum value was 85 g cm−1 in August. Maximum gel strength in G. longissima was observed in October (91 g cm−1), and an unusual native agar with no detectable gel strength was observed in March and April samples. Gelling temperatures range from 27.7 to 36.5°C in G. vermiculophyla and from 26.6 to 34.9°C in G. longissima, meanwhile melting points were 73.9 – 53.5°C and 75.5 – 56.6°C, respectively. Sulfate content was high, 6.3–13.9% in G. vermiculophylla and 1.9–11.9% in G. longissima, and on the other hand 3,6 anhydrogalactose content was low 12.1–26.7% and 9.1–23%, respectively compared to other species. Results obtained showed that mean native agar yields of Gracilaria vermiculophylla and Gracilariopsis longissima from the Gulf of California are comparable to other tropical Gracilaria. However, the low gel strength, high sulfate content and low 3,6 anhydrogalactose content observed in the native agar extracted from these species make this an agaroid, thus alternative methods of extraction should be used to evaluate the possibility of commercial utilization of both species.  相似文献

Palmaria palmata and Gracilaria verrucosa are edible red seaweeds and potential protein sources for human or animal nutrition, so studies were conducted on their in vitro protein digestibility. After 30 min predigestion by pepsin followed by 6 h digestion into a cell dialysis containing porcine pancreatin, the in vitro protein digestibility of P. palmata and G. verrucosa, expressed in regard to casein digestibility, was 4.9% and 42.1%, respectively. The level of protein digestibility seems to be related to the amount of soluble fibre, which was 45.3% and 30.5%, respectively.  相似文献

Four flattened Gracilaria species have been reported from Taiwan: G. spinulosa, G. vieillardii, G. textorii and G. punctata, identified based on branching pattern, the presence or absence of spines, and characters that often vary seasonally. Gracilaria spinulosa was originally described from the type locality, Tainan. Species with toothed margins are usually referred to G. “vieillardii”; those with smooth margins to G. “textorii”, and those with smooth margins and dark spots scattered over the blade to G. “punctata”. Molecular analyses show that specimens with marginal teeth cluster in three different groups: a G. “vieillardii” clade, a G. spinulosa clade, and a clade sister to G. spinulosa. An undescribed species comprises the third clade, which is distinguished by its relatively large gonimoblast cells and weakly developed tubular nutritive cells. The three clades can be separated by the character of the tubular nutritive cells, the size of gonimoblast cells and certain vegetative features. Plants with entire margins form a single clade characterized by cystocarps with basal tubular nutritive cells and their absence in the cystocarp cavity. They are nested in the Hydropuntia complex and are referred to as Gracilaria “punctata” here. The records of G. textorii and G. punctata from Taiwan require reinvestigation in comparison with the Japanese species.  相似文献

Six gracilarioid strains originating from different climatical environments were cultured in two cultivation systems: a short-term indoor one with a cross gradiant table, and a long-term outdoor one. Seasonal growth performances of the different strains were determined. The growth results in the two culture systems showed similar trends. The tropical species.Gracilaria cornea andG. cornea mutant, showed highest growth rates during summer and no growth at all during winter. The temperate species,Gracilaria verrucosa andGracilariopsis lemaneiformis, showed best growth performances during winter with small fluctuations between seasons. The subtropical speciesGracilaria conferta (local) showed seasonal growth fluctuations all over the year. The foreign species definitely did not acclimate under local conditions, but successfully preserved their original response to temperature. Regression equations confirmed that temperature was the dominant environmental variable in most of the gracilarioid strains. The growth rate results obtained showed encouraging prospects for high algal productivity as compared to other cultivation systems. Seasonal cultivation strategy ofGracilaria spp. in Israel is discussed.  相似文献

The local species Gracilaria conferta and the foreign G. verrucosa were grown together under a wide range of photon flux density and temperature conditions. Gracilaria verrucosa showed a higher growth rate, especially under low temperatures, and higher photosynthetic performances as well as higher ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity as compared with G. conferta. Gracilaria verrucosa also showed a better quality and yield of agar, suggesting that this species could be more suitable than G. conferta for outdoor cultivation in Israel and may improve winter growth in ponds. Growth rate and agar quality (gel strength) were rated as the most suitable characteristics influencing the preference of strains for outdoor cultivation.  相似文献

A newly abundant Gracilaria species in the sounds of southeastern North Carolina has become a problem for commercial fishing and industries drawing water from the lower Cape Fear River. DNA sequence analyses have shown that this species is Gracilaria vermiculophylla, a taxon originally described from East Asia. Surveys for G. vermiculophylla have shown that it has a discontinuous distribution in the sounds of southeastern North Carolina, and suggest that it is spreading. Gracilaria vermiculophylla meets 6 of the 10 criteria used to help identify invasive species in that it has only recently appeared in southeastern North Carolina; is associated with human mechanisms of dispersal; has a restricted distribution; has disjunct populations in isolated oceans; no means of active dispersal, and an exotic evolutionary origin. The species may also meet two additional criteria as its local range is believed to be expanding, and it is filling a previously unoccupied seasonal niche. These factors taken together strongly suggest that G. vermiculophylla is an invasive species in southeastern North Carolina.  相似文献

There are about 15 species of Gracilaria reported in Vietnam. Of these, Gracilaria asiatica Zhang et Xia is being cultivated on a large scale in Northern Vietnam, which has a subtropical climate. During the rainy season, from May to October, the growth of G. asiatica is drastically reduced or even ceases due to very low salinity and high temperature. Therefore, it is important to improve the tolerance of G. asiatica to a wide range of salinity and temperatures. This paper presents the results of research on strain improvement of G. asiatica using irradiation and selection media. Three irradiation doses of 20, 60, and 100 krad were tested against the control (with no irradiation). Afterward, the seaweed biomass was cultivated on a selected medium, ESS-1, containing NaCl in concentrations of 23‰ (C1) and 0‰ (C2). The results showed that a higher survival rate of G. asiatica was observed with the 20- and 60-krad doses. The protein content and composition of selected seaweeds were analyzed and compared with the control. SDS-PAGE showed no remarkable difference in the protein composition between the control and irradiated samples. However, the 67-kDa protein band of seaweed treated with 20 and 60 krad, then grown on ESS-1 medium with 23% NaCl, had a higher density than other samples. This protein was reported to play an important role in G. asiatica, by enhancing its tolerance to variable salinity and temperature. Although the organic and inorganic content of all samples remained almost the same, the content and quality of agar extracted from irradiated seaweeds were higher than those of the controls. Due to the high amount of 3.6 anhydro-α-L-galactose combined with low amounts of sulfate found in irradiated seaweeds, the freezing and melting points of extracted agar were lower. Eventually, this resulted in higher condensation and better quality of agar, such as in its gel-forming ability. The quality of fluid agar extracted from selected seaweeds improved as shown in the remarkable decrease in Ca2+, Mg2+, and total Fe ion content, thus lowering its melting point compared with the control. The community structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in the roots of drought-resistant trees, Moringa spp., was examined in semiarid regions in Madagascar and Uganda. Root samples were collected from 8 individuals of M. hildebrandtii and 2 individuals of M. drouhardii in Madagascar and from 21 individuals of M. oleifera in Uganda. Total DNA was extracted from the root samples, and partial nSSU rDNA of AM fungi was amplified using a universal eukaryotic primer NS31 and an AM fungalspecific primer AM1. The PCR products were cloned and divided by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with HinfI and RsaI. Some representatives in each RFLP types were sequenced, and a neighbor-joining phylogenetic analysis was conducted for the obtained sequences with analogous sequences of AM fungi. The RFLP and phylogenetic analyses showed that AM fungi closely related to Glomus intraradices or G. sinuosum were detected in many samples. The AM fungal groups frequently detected in the Moringa spp. might be widely distributed species in semiarid environments.  相似文献

Bacterial diversity in the rhizosphere of beach morning glory (Calystegia soldanella) and wild rye (Elymus mollis), two of the major plant species inhabiting the coastal sane dune in Tae-An, Korea, was studied by the analysis of community 16S rRNA gene clones. The amplified rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) of the clones using HaeIII exhibited significant differences in the community composition between the two plant species as well as regional differences, but also identified a specific ARDRA pattern that was most common among the clones regardless of plant species. Subsequent sequence analysis indicated that the pattern was that of Lysobacter spp., which is a member of the family Xanthomonadaceae, class Gamma proteobacteria. The Lysobacter clones comprised 50.6% of the clones derived from C. soldanella and 62.5% of those from E. mollis. Other minor patterns included those of Pseudomonas spp., species of Rhizobium, Chryseobacterium spp. and Pantoea spp. among C. soldanella clones, and Pseudomonas sp. and Aeromonas hydrophila among E. mollis clones. It is not yet clear what kind of roles Lysobacter plays in association with sand dune plants, but its universal presence in the rhizosphere, together with the potential of this taxon for antagonistic activity against plant pathogens, suggests that Lysobacter might form a symbiotic relationship with its host plants.  相似文献

Commercial seaweeds in Spain are harvested on the north and northwest coasts. They are mainly agarophytes and carrageenophytes (Gelidium spp. and some Irish moss-like species, respectively), although some Phaeophyceae species (Fucus spp. and Laminaria spp.) are also exploited for alginates. No industrial seaweed cultivation is carried out in Spain at present. Spain's total commercial seaweed harvest can be estimated at 6,528 ± 2,076 t dry wt year–1. Gelidium spp. are by far the most harvested, attaining 5,135 ± 1,761 t dry wt y–1. To date, Spain's commercial seaweed harvest is low compared with that of other countries, but data on field standing crops and productivities of commercial taxa suggest that harvesting could be increased greatly.  相似文献

The red seaweeds Gelidiella acerosa and Gracilaria mammillaris growing along the coast of Venezuela were investigated as potential economic sources of agar. Agar extracted from Gracilaria mammillaris accounted for 27% of the algal dry weight but had quite a poor gelling ability because of the presence of alkali-stable sulphate groups on the D-galactose residue. However, the gel strength of its aqueous solutions was considerably enhanced by the addition of potassium, sodium and calcium ions (up to 1N). On the contrary, the galactan from Gelidiella acerosa (yield of about 20% w/w) exhibited quite good properties. In particular, the gel strength was comparable to that of commercial agaroses. Sulphate esters were not detectable by chemical methods and NMR spectroscopy revealed an agarose backbone with a high degree of methylation on both D and L-galactose residues.  相似文献

Herbivory on marine macroalgae (seaweeds) in temperate areas is often dominated by relatively small gastropods and crustaceans (mesoherbivores). The effects of these herbivores on the performance of adult seaweeds have so far been almost exclusively investigated under artificial laboratory conditions. Furthermore, several recent laboratory studies with mesoherbivores indicate that inducible chemical resistance may be as common in seaweeds as in vascular plants. However, in order to further explore and test the possible ecological significance of induced chemical resistance in temperate seaweeds, data are needed that address this issue in natural populations. We investigated the effect of grazing by littorinid herbivorous snails (Littorina spp.) on the individual net growth of the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum in natural field populations. Furthermore, the capacity for induced resistance in the seaweeds was assessed by removing herbivores and assaying for relaxation of defences. We found that ambient densities of gastropod herbivores significantly reduced net growth by 45% in natural field populations of A. nodosum. Seaweeds previously exposed to grazing in the field were less consumed by gastropod herbivores in feeding bioassays. Furthermore, the concentration of phlorotannins (polyphenolics), which have been shown to deter gastropod herbivores, was higher in the seaweeds that were exposed to gastropod herbivores in the field. This field study corroborates earlier laboratory experiments and demonstrates that it is important to make sure that the lack of experimental field data on marine mesoherbivory does not lead to rash conclusions about the lack of significant effects of these herbivores on seaweed performance. The results strongly suggest that gastropods exert a significant selection pressure on the evolution of defensive traits in the seaweeds, and that brown seaweeds can respond to attacks by natural densities of these herbivores through increased chemical resistance to further grazing.  相似文献

Effects of temperature and salinity on the growth of the two agarophytes, Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss and Gracilaria chorda Holmes were examined in Korea. Both species grew over a wide range of temperatures (10–30 C) and salinities (5–35‰), and grew well at 17–30 C and a salinity of 15–30‰. In culture, G. verrucosa grew faster than G. chorda and their maximum growth rates were 4.95% day−1 (30 C, 25‰) and 4.47% day−1 (at 25 C, 25‰), respectively. In the field population the maximum growth and fertility of G. chorda were observed in summer. The growth rate of G. verrucosa was slightly higher than that of G. chorda for 2 weeks on the cultivation rope and in culture but it was much lower after being contaminated with epiphytes. The biomass of the epiphytes was 0.82 g dry wt. per host plant in G. verrucosa and 0.001 g in G. chorda. G. chorda exhibited resistance to epiphytism and grew 7 times in length and the dry weight increased 15 times after 55 days. In conclusion, G. chorda appears to be a good agarophyte with a fast growth rate and resistance to epiphytesm, and compared with G. verrucosa, has good potential for commercial cultivation.  相似文献

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco, EC 4.1.1.39) and its subunits (large subunits = LSU, small subunits = SSU) were isolated from threeCapsella spp. by gel electrophoresis and polypeptide composition was analyzed by isoelectric focusing (IEF) in the presence of 8M urea. The described techniques are recommended for large scale systematic studies. Multiple IEF banding patterns of the SSU are probably the outcome of a heterogenous multigene family. The two diploid speciesC. rubella andC. grandiflora show an identical IEF pattern and could be differentiated from the putative allotetraploidC. bursa-pastoris only by the SSU banding pattern. Uniqueness of some SSU bands in the tetraploid and in the two diploid species, respectively, may indicate an ancient alloploid origin of tetraploidC. bursa-pastoris followed by events leading to divergences in the genomes of the allotetraploid and its presumed diploid progenitors after the hybridization event (SSU gene elimination, acquisition of new SSU genes).  相似文献

Thirty-nine subgeneric taxa of macroalgae have been collected from 83 sites in Georgian Bay, the North Channel and their drainage basin. There were 15 species in the Bay and Channel and 32 species in streams, rivers and impoundments in the basin. Only 8 of the Bay and Channel species were also found in the watershed. Cladophora glomerata was the most important species in Georgian Bay and the North Channel, having an estimated 640 × 103 m2 cover and 19 × 104 kg fresh weight standing crop. However, this species was largely concentrated on the southwestern shorelines of these water bodies. Its distribution along the northeastern shoreline appears to be limited by total ion and phosphorus levels. Chara globularis/vulgaris was the subdominant taxon in Georgian Bay and the North Channel with an estimated 70 × 103 m2 cover and 15 × 103 kg fresh weight biomass. This species was more widely distributed than C. glomerata. No other taxon contributed significantly to the standing crop including the frequently occurring Ulothrix zonata, Zygnema spp. and Spirogyra spp. The maximum benthic macroalgal biomass was estimated to be approximately 10% of the phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Chile is an important producer of brown seaweeds representing 10% of world supply. Landings of Chilean kelp fluctuated between 40,000 t.year−1 in the early ‘80s to 250,000 t.year−1 more recently. Commercialized algae come from natural populations and no mass-cultures of involved species have been established. Four species of brown algae are commercially collected in the country: Lessonia trabeculata, L. nigrescens, Macrocystis pyrifera and M. integrifolia. Since 2000, the demand of alginate sources and food for cultivated abalones dramatically raised the harvesting of these species. Direct evaluations of Lessonia spp. and Macrocystis standing-stocks were made along 700 km of coast in northern Chile. Lessonia spp. estimated populations exceed 900,000 t, whereas M. integrifolia does not exceed 300 t. The insights provided indicate that sustainability of Chilean kelp subjected to intense harvesting would require management programs including the following bio-ecological recommendations: (1) to harvest the entire plant including the holdfast; (2) to harvest plants larger than 20 cm in diameter; (3) to harvest plants sparsely, selecting mayor specimens; (4) rotation of harvesting areas; and (5) for Macrocystis, to cut the canopy 1–2 m from the surface. They must be implemented in a National Program of Kelp Management, elaborated by government, scientists, fisherman, and industry.  相似文献
