The objective of the present investigation was to determine if cyclic variations in human performance recorded during a 30 min continuous performance task would parallel cyclic variations in right-hemisphere beta-wave activity. A fast fourier transformation was performed on the quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and the performance record of each participant (N = 62), producing an individual periodogram for each outcome measure. An average periodogram was then produced for both qEEG and performance by combining (averaging) the amplitudes associated with each periodicity in the 62 original periodograms. Periodicities ranging from 1.00 to 2.00 min and from 4.70 to 5.70 min with amplitudes greater than would be expected due to chance were retained (Smith et al. 2003). The results of the present investigation validate the existence of cyclic variations in human performance that have been identified previously (Smith et al. 2003) and extend those findings by implicating right-hemisphere mediated arousal in the process (Arruda et al. 1996, 1999, 2007). Significant cyclic variations in left-hemisphere beta-wave activity were not observed. Taken together, the findings of the present investigation support a model of sustained attention that predicts cyclic changes in human performance that are the result of cyclic changes in right-hemisphere arousal.

Recent works on the response of barrel neurons to periodic deflections of the rat vibrissae have shown that the stimulus velocity is encoded in the corti cal spike rate (Pinto et al., Journal of Neurophysiology, 83(3), 1158–1166, 2000; Arabzadeh et al., Journal of Neuroscience, 23(27), 9146–9154, 2003). Other studies have reported that repetitive pulse stimulation produces band-pass filtering of the barrel response rate centered around 7–10 Hz (Garabedian et al., Journal of Neurophysiology, 90, 1379–1391, 2003) whereas sinusoidal stimulation gives an increasing rate up to 350 Hz (Arabzadeh et al., Journal of Neuroscience, 23(27), 9146–9154, 2003). To explore the mechanisms underlying these results we propose a simple computational model consisting in an ensemble of cells in the ventro-posterior medial thalamic nucleus (VPm) encoding the stimulus velocity in the temporal profile of their response, connected to a single barrel cell through synapses showing short-term depression. With sinusoidal stimulation, encoding the velocity in VPm facilitates the response as the stimulus frequency increases and it causes the velocity to be encoded in the cortical rate in the frequency range 20–100 Hz. Synaptic depression does not suppress the response with sinusoidal stimulation but it produces a band-pass behavior using repetitive pulses. We also found that the passive properties of the cell membrane eventually suppress the response to sinusoidal stimulation at high frequencies, something not observed experimentally. We argue that network effects not included here must be important in sustaining the response at those frequencies.

Density functional theory calculations have been carried out to elucidate the mechanism of cyclohexane hydroxylation by three possible isomers of [FeIV(O)(N-R-N,N′,N′-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine)]2+ (R is methyl or benzyl) (Klinker et al. in Angew Chem Int Ed 44:3690–3694, 2005). The calculations offer a mechanistic view and reveal the following features: (a) all the three isomers possess triplet ground states and low-lying quintet excited states, (b) the relative stability follows the order isomer A > isomer B > isomer C, in agreement with the conclusions of Klinker et al., (c) the theoretical investigations provide a rationale to explain the interconversion of the three isomers, (d) the reaction pathways of the C–H hydroxylation are initiated by a hydrogen-abstraction step, and (e) the three isomers react with cyclohexane via two-state-reactivity patterns on competing triplet and quintet spin-state surfaces. As such, in the gas phase, the relative reactivity exhibits the trend isomer B > isomer A, while at the highest level, B2//B1 with zero point energy and solvation corrections, the relative reactivity follows the order isomer B > isomer A > isomer C. Thus, the calculated reaction pathway shows that pyridine rings perpendicular to the Fe–O axis result in more reactive species, and a pyridine ring coordinated trans to the oxygen atom leads to the least reactive isomer. Saccocoelium Looss, 1902 is revised and a key to its recognised species is presented. S. obesum Looss, 1902 (type-species) and S. tensum Looss, 1902 are redescribed based on material from Liza spp. (Pisces: Mugilidae) in Spanish Mediterranean and, in the case of the former, Bulgarian Black Sea waters. Two new species, S. cephali n. sp. and S. currani n. sp., are described from Mugil cephalus L. in Spanish Mediterranean waters. S. gohari Ramadan, Saoud, Ashour & Mansour, 1989b is recognised and commented upon. Lecithobotrys helmymohamedi Ramadan, Saoud, Ashour & Mansour, 1989a, S. portsaidensis El-Shahawi, El-Gindy, Imam & Al-Bassel, 1992, S. saoudi El-Shahawi, El-Gindy, Imam & Al-Bassel, 1992, Neosaccocoelium aegyptiacus El-Shahawi, El-Gindy, Imam & Al-Bassel, 1992 are considered to be synonyms of S. tensum and Neosaccocoelium El-Shahawi, El-Gindy, Imam & Al-Bassel, 1992 a synonym of Saccocoelium. S. obesum, S. tensum and the two new species are compared morphometrically and distinguished by univariate and multivariate analyses. Lecithobotrys mugilis Rekharani & Madhavi, 1985 is transferred to Unisaccus Martin, 1973 as U. mugilis (Rekharani & Madhavi, 1985) n. comb., and Lecithobotrys sprenti Martin, 1973 [=  Saccocoelium sprenti (Martin, 1973) Overstreet & Curran, 2005] is transferred to Unisaccus as U. sprenti (Martin, 1973) n. comb. S. megasacculum Liu, Wang, Peng, Yu & Yang, 2004 is transferred to Elliptobursa Wu, Lu & Zhu, 1996 as E. megasacculum (Liu, Wang, Peng, Yu & Yang, 2004) n. comb. S. tripathi Dutta, 1995 (syn. Saccocoelium tripathi Datta & Manna, 1998) is considered to be a species inquirenda.

The lumpy distribution of species along a continuous one-dimensional niche axis recently found by Scheffer and van Nes (Scheffer and van Ness 2006) is explained mathematically. We show that it emerges simply from the eigenvalue and eigenvectors of the community matrix. Both the transient patterns—lumps and gaps between them—as well as the asymptotic equilibrium are explained. If the species are evenly distributed along the niche axis, the emergence of these patterns can be demonstrated analytically. The more general case, of randomly distributed species, shows only slight deviations and is illustrated by numerical simulation. This is a robust result whenever the finiteness of the niche is taken into account: it can be extended to different analytic dependence of the interaction coefficients with the distance on the niche axis (i.e., different kernel interactions), different boundary conditions, etc. We also found that there is a critical value both for the width of the species distribution σ and the number of species n below which the clusterization disappears.

The provision of flood safety is of paramount importance in densely populated deltaic regions. The Dutch rely on flood defences to protect their lives and livelihoods from large-scale floods. The paper “Changing estuaries, changing views” (Smits et al., Hydrobiologica 565:339–355, 2006) criticizes this strategy and presents an alternative that could be summarized as a proposal to leave deltas untouched and to rely on natural sedimentation to reduce the impact of floods. It seems questionable, however, whether such a strategy will often be compatible with population pressures and efforts to stimulate economic growth. Moreover, it presupposes morphological conditions that seem highly unrealistic, not just in the Netherlands but also in many other sediment-starved coastal systems. Other than recommending countries not to implement the Dutch flood protection strategy and to leave deltas untouched, it should be recommended that solutions be tailored to local circumstances. The choice of a flood protection strategy should be based on a balanced evaluation of alternatives, including a realistic assessment of physical conditions.

Neotetraonchus Bravo-Hollis, 1968 is revised and reassigned to the Dactylogyridae Bychowsky, 1933 based on examinations of specimens representing four species from the gill lamellae of sea catfishes (Ariidae). The monotypic Neotetraonchidae Bravo-Hollis, 1968 is placed in synonymy with the Dactylogyridae. Neotetraonchus bychowskyi Bravo-Hollis, 1968 (type-species), is redescribed from the tete sea catfish Ariopsis seemanni (Günther) (type-host) in the eastern Pacific Ocean off Panama (new geographical record). Neotetraonchus vegrandis n. sp. is described from the blue sea catfish A. guatemalensis (Günther) off the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Neotetraonchus bravohollisae Paperna, 1977 is redescribed from the hardhead sea catfish A. felis (L.) in the Gulf of Mexico off the Yucatan Peninsula. Neotetraonchus felis (Hargis, 1955) Paperna, 1977 is redescribed from A. felis in the Gulf of Mexico off Mississippi and the Yucatan Peninsula (new geographical record). Morphological similarities between species of Neotetraonchus suggest the likely presence of geminate species pairs flanking the Isthmus of Panama.

With group sizes sometimes >300 individuals, the Angolan black-and-white colobus (Colobus angolensis ruwenzorii) population in Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda is an intriguing exception to the tendency for folivores to live in smaller groups than expected relative to body size. Researchers have hypothesized that the unusually high quality of foliage at Nyungwe allows colobus there to avoid intragroup feeding competition, releasing constraints on the formation of large groups (Fimbel et al., 2001). We collected data on the activity and ranging patterns of a >300-member Nyungwe colobus group and compared our results to those from smaller groups in other black-and-white colobus (Colobus spp.) populations. Colobus at Nyungwe spent far more time feeding and moving (62%) and far less time resting (32%) than black-and-white colobus at any other site. The annual home range of the Nyungwe colobus was also many times larger (95% minimum convex polygon: 20.7 km 2 ; 95% fixed kernel: 24.4 km 2 ) than those for other populations. We terminated our research after the group engaged in an unprecedented migration among black-and-white colobus by moving 13 km south of their former range. Our results suggest that intragroup scramble competition may be more intense than originally believed within the large colobus groups at Nyungwe and that long periods of resource renewal may be necessary after a large colobus group passes through an area, thereby potentially helping to explain their wide ranging patterns. We discuss the socioecological convergence between the Nyungwe colobus and Chinese snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus spp.) and suggest directions for future research on the unique black-and-white colobus population at Nyungwe.

Two new haploporine genera are established for parasites of mullets. Ragaia n. g. is erected for R. lizae n. sp. from Liza ramado in the Ebro Delta on the Mediterranean Coast of Spain. This new genus is distinguished by the unique combination of the following characters: a strongly muscular ventral sucker which is twice as large as the oral sucker; a large, muscular hermaphroditic sac similar in length to the ventral sucker; a saccular, thick-walled internal seminal vesicle which is larger than the external seminal vesicle; and the ovary and vitellarium located rather close to the posterior extremity. Pseudodicrogaster n. g. is erected to accommodate Dicrogaster japonica Machida, 1996, as P. japonica (Machida, 1996) n. comb., a parasite of Mugil cephalus L. off Fukaura, Japan. This genus is recognised on the basis of: the tubular condition of both the internal and external seminal vesicles, the latter being much shorter than the former; the sucker ratio; the massive pyriform hermaphroditic sac; the location of the testis; and the presence of two eye-spots in developed miracidia. A key to the nine recognised genera of the Haploporinae is presented.

Sub-Antarctic Marion Island has had a permanent research station for 50 years and the islands Wandering Albatrosses have been intensively studied for 20 years. The reactions of breeding birds to approaches by a human on foot were recorded. Three response variables were calculated: intensity of vocal reaction (IVR), intensity of non-vocal reaction (INR) and overall response index (ORI). At 5 m from the nest, twice as many birds stood and/or vocalised as at 15 m. Nearest neighbour distance, age and gender did not explain individual variability of responses. Study colony birds had higher IVR scores than non-study colony birds; birds at colonies closest to the station had the highest ORI scores. A better breeding record was associated with lower IVR and ORI scores, but a causative relationship remains to be demonstrated. A minimum viewing distance of 25 m is recommended for breeding Wandering Albatrosses.

In 1921 the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs (OIA) attempted to suppress ritual public performances in the Southwestern Pueblos. Several reams of documenting text were used to support this authorizing text. These documenting texts were affidavits purporting to describe “degrading tendencies” and “immoral relations” in the Puebloan habitus. The OIA used these sensationalized representations of the habitus of Native Americans’ communities to promote and justify the policy of forced acculturation in the waning days of its implementation. What is perplexing is that these supporting texts were trotted out so late, decades after the major thrusts of the forced acculturation program had first been put into play. My purpose is to analyze the place of these texts in the forced acculturation program. I suggest, following Anne McClintock (1995) that the obsessive fascination that the public performances seem to have held for those who reported on and condemned them, represent a layered and complex intertwining of ambivalence about domestic social relations and gender with confusion about culture and labor. Examining a slice of the U.S. Government’s policy of forced acculturation in a corner of the Native American world reveals a potentially implosive anxiety of reconciling the imposition of a desired mode of production with the persistence of a habitus perceived as celebrating the violation of appropriate domesticity.

Formation of membrane microdomain is critical for cell migration (epiboly) during gastrulation of medaka fish [Adachi et al. (Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 358:848–853, 2007)]. In this study, we characterized membrane microdomain from gastrula embryos to understand its roles in epiboly. A cell adhesion molecule (E-cadherin), its associated protein (β-catenin), transducer proteins (PLCγ, cSrc), and a cytoskeleton protein (β-actin) were enriched in the membrane microdomain. LeX-containing glycolipids and glycoproteins (LeX-gp) were exclusively enriched in the membrane microdomain. Interestingly, the isolated membrane microdomain had the ability to bind to each other in the presence of Ca2+. This membrane microdomain binding was achieved through the E-cadherin homophilic and the LeX-glycan-mediated interactions. E-cadherin and LeX-gp were co-localized on the same membrane microdomain, suggesting that these two interactions are operative at the same time. Thus, the membrane microdomain functions as a platform of the E-cadherin- and LeX-glycan-mediated cell adhesion and signal transduction.

Godfrey-Smith (2001) has distinguished three types of adaptationism. This article builds on his analysis, and revises it in places, by distinguishing seven varieties of adaptationism. This taxonomy allows us to clarify what is at stake in debates over adaptationism, and it also helps to cement the importance of Gould and Lewontin’s ‘Spandrels’ essay. Some adaptationists have suggested that their essay does not offer any coherent alternative to the adaptationist programme: it consists only in an exhortation to test adaptationist hypotheses more thoroughly than was usual in the 1970s. Here it is argued that the ‘Spandrels’ paper points towards a genuinely non-adaptationist methodology implicit in much evolutionary developmental biology. This conclusion helps to expose the links between older debates over adaptationism and more recent questions about the property of evolvability.

Large-scale scientific computing applications frequently make use of closely-coupled distributed parallel components. The performance of such applications is therefore dependent on the component parts and their interaction at run-time. This paper describes a methodology for predictive performance modelling and evaluation of parallel applications composed of multiple interacting components. In this paper, the fundamental steps and required operations involved in the modelling and evaluation process are identified—including component decomposition, component model combination, M×N communication modelling, dataflow analysis and overall performance evaluation. A case study is presented to illustrate the modelling process and the methodology is verified through experimental analysis.

This article explores the nightmares of Cambodian refugees in a cultural context, and the role of nightmares in the trauma ontology of this population, including their role in generating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Among Cambodian refugees attending a psychiatric clinic, we found that having a nightmare was strongly associated with having PTSD (χ2 = 61.7, P < 0.001, odds ratio = 126); that nightmares caused much distress upon awakening, including panic attacks, fear of bodily dysfunction, flashbacks and difficulty returning to sleep; that nightmare content was frequently related to traumatic events; that nightmares resulted in a decrease in the sense of “concentric ontology security” (i.e., in an increased sense of physical and spiritual vulnerability in a culture that conceives of the self in terms of concentric, protective layers), including fears of being attacked by ghosts; and that nightmares frequently led to the performance of specific practices and rituals aiming to extrude and repel attacking forces and to create “protective layers.” Cases are presented to illustrate these findings. The Discussion considers some treatment implications of the study.

Applications are faced with several network-related problems on current grids: heterogeneous networks, firewalls, NAT, private IP addresses, non-routed networks, performance problems on WAN. Moreover, the requirements concerning communications are varied and the acceptable tradeoffs highly depends on the applications. A solution to reach the flexibility regarding communication on grids is the use of a component-based communication framework. The users then compose their own protocol stacks by assembling building blocks in the way they want. However, a truly flexible and dynamic component-based communication framework needs a meta-communication channel for its out-of-band communications required by dynamic component assembly in a consistent way on multiple nodes. The meta-communication channel is useful for some “brokered” communication methods, too, and in particular those designed to cross firewalls. The meta-communication channel has often been the “weakest link” of component-based communication frameworks: bottleneck for the performance, back-door from the security point of view, and limited connectivity. In this article, we present an architecture for a meta-communication channel that suffers from none of the aforementioned limitations. It exhibits good properties regarding connectivity, security and performance. Thus, the gain in flexibility brought by software components may be fully exploited without trading anything against flexibility.

Both written and graphic accounts of history can be biased by the perspective of the historian. O’Hara (Biol Philos 7:135–160, 1992) has demonstrated that this also applies to evolutionary history and its historians, and identified four narrative devices that introduce anthropocentricisms into accounts of phylogeny. In the current paper, I identify a fifth such narrative device, viz. the left–right ordering of the taxa at the tips of cladograms. I define two measures that make it possible to quantify the degree of anthropocentricism of cladograms, the human attention score and human rightness score. I then carry out an analysis of the presence of the different distorting mechanisms in phylogenetic textbooks. I deliberately chose two textbooks that adopted a cladistic perspective, since their authors can be assumed to be more conscious about the aim of avoiding anthropocentricisms. Three of the narrative devices are thus absent from cladistic works. However, there is a weak tendency that the resolution of cladogram branches is biased in favour of Homo sapiens. Furthermore, the human perspective is clear and highly significant in the positioning of taxa along the left–right axis of cladograms. I discuss the reasons for and implications of these biased presentations.
