Sequence data for the rbcL locus were obtained for two of the three species of the Mexican endemicRecchia. Parsimony analyses of the molecular data base indicate that Surianaceae sensu Cronquist are paraphyletic; inclusion ofRecchia rendered the family monophyletic. This placement is corroborated by a suite of morphological characters: an apocarpous (or monocarpic), gynoecium of bi-ovulate carpels with basal-marginal placentation and a ventrobasal style, and the occurrence in all butGuilfoylia of a characteristic 3-layered endocarp. The molecular data support a closer relationship betweenRecchia and the AustralianCadellia than between the latter and any of the other Australian genera. The molecular data suggest that the affinities of Surianaceae lie in a clade comprising at least Polygalaceae, Fabaceae, andQuillaja.  相似文献

The Fabales clade comprises four families: Leguminosae, Polygalaceae, Quillajaceae and Surianaceae. This study presents new information on the pollen morphology of Quillaja, the only genus of Quillajaceae, and Recchia, Guilfoylia, Cadellia, Suriana and Stylobasium, the five genera that comprise Surianaceae. The pollen of 9 of the 11 species currently recognised within the two families was examined using light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and, selectively, with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Pollen of all taxa is isopolar with tri-zonocolporate apertures, lalongate endoapertures with fastigia adjacent to the endoaperture, and long ectoapertures that are nearly equal to the polar length. Apocolpia are correspondingly small. Quillaja pollen is subprolate to prolate, and striate with a granular aperture surface membrane. Ectexine protrudes over the endoapertures. In thin section the foot layer is thicker in mesocolpial areas and thin to discontinuous around the apertures, where the endexine is thicker. Cadellia pollen is prolate spheroidal, and striate with a granular aperture surface membrane. Exine protrudes over the endoapertures. In thin section the endexine is thicker and lamellate around the endoaperture area, and the foot layer is thicker in mesocolpial regions. Guilfoylia pollen is oblate and gemmate-verrucate, with a granular aperture surface membrane. Columellae are short. Recchia pollen is suboblate to oblate spheroidal, and microreticulate-perforate with a granular aperture surface membrane. Exine protrudes over the endoapertures. The foot layer is thin to discontinuous around aperture margins and thick in mesocolpial regions. Stylobasium pollen is suboblate, and finely rugulate-perforate with a granular aperture surface membrane. Columellae are short, the foot layer is thin or absent. Suriana pollen is suboblate, and finely rugulate-perforate with a granular aperture surface membrane. Pollen of Cadellia and Recchia, and Stylobasium and Suriana are morphologically similar. Verrucate surface ornamentation is only present in Guilfoylia. Quillaja, Cadellia and Recchia share the character of protruding exine over the endoaperture area. Striate ornamentation occurs in Quillaja and Cadellia. The pollen morphology of Quillajaceae has more in common with that of Leguminosae and Surianaceae, and with Cadellia in particular, than with Polygalaceae.  相似文献

Echinocereus is a morphologically diverse genus that includes 64 species grouped into eight taxonomic sections based on morphological traits. In previous molecular phylogenetic analyses, the relationships amongst Echinocereus species were not entirely revealed and useful characters to recognize clades were not provided. The inclusion of several sources of evidence in a phylogenetic analysis is likely to produce more supported hypotheses. Therefore, we performed a combined phylogenetic analysis with a set of 44 morphological characters and six chloroplast DNA sequences. Topologies from parsimony and Bayesian analyses were mostly congruent. However, the relationships of E. poselgeri were not consistent between analyses. A second Bayesian analysis using a long-branch extraction test resulted in a topology with the morphological position of E. poselgeri congruent with that in parsimony analysis. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses corroborated the monophyly of Echinocereus, which included eight monophyletic groups. The combined phylogeny integrated into different clades those taxa that were not determined in previous analyses and changed the relationships of some recognized clades. The clades did not recover the recent infrageneric classification. In the present study, a new sectional classification for Echinocereus is proposed based on the eight recovered clades, which is supported by a combination of morphological and molecular characters. An identification key for sections in the genus is included.  相似文献

The genus Ixchela Huber is composed of 20 species distributed from north‐eastern Mexico to Central America, including the five new species described here from Mexico: I xchela azteca sp. nov. , I xchela jalisco sp. nov. , I xchela mendozai sp. nov. , I xchela purepecha sp. nov. and I xchela tlayuda sp. nov. We test the monophyly and investigate the phylogenetic relationships among species of the genus Ixchela using morphological and molecular data. Parsimony (PA) analysis of 24 taxa and 40 morphological characters with equal and implied weights supported the monophyly of Ixchela with eight morphological synapomorphies. The PA analyses with equal and implied weights, and separate Bayesian inference (BI) analyses for the CO1 gene (506 characters), concatenated gene fragments CO1 + 16S (885 characters), morphology + CO1 (546 characters) and the combined evidence data set (morphology + CO1 + 16S) (925 characters) support the monophyly of Ixchela. Our preferred topology shows two large clades; clade 1 has a natural distribution in the Mesoamerican biotic component, whereas clade 2 predominates in the Mexican Montane biotic component. The genus Ixchela diverged in the late Miocene, and the divergence between the internal clades in the genus occurred in the late Pliocene; by contrast, most of the speciation events seem to have occurred mainly during the Pleistocene, where climatic changes brought on by repeated glaciations played an important role in the diversification of the genus. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Nucleotide sequences of the chloroplast gene, rbcL, were obtained for Suriana maritima, Cadellia pentastylis, Guilfoylia monostylis, Stylobasium australe, Quassia amara, Brucea mollis, Cupaniopsis anacardioides, Mangifera indica, Connarus conchocarpus, and Comesperma ericinum. Phylogenetic analyses of these, along with published sequences of representatives of rosid families, support the monophyly of the Surianaceae sensu Cronquist and provide evidence of an affinity with the Polygalaceae and Fabaceae. These conclusions are discussed in the light of available morphological data.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic nematodes of the genus Steinernema are lethal parasites of insects that are used as biological control agents of several lepidopteran, dipteran and coleopteran pests. Phylogenetic relationships among 25 Steinernema species were estimated using nucleotide sequences from three genes and 22 morphological characters. Parsimony analysis of 28S (LSU) sequences yielded a well-resolved phylogenetic hypothesis with reliable bootstrap support for 13 clades. Parsimony analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences (12S rDNA and cox 1 genes) yielded phylogenetic trees with a lower consistency index than for LSU sequences, and with fewer reliably supported clades. Combined phylogenetic analysis of the 3-gene dataset by parsimony and Bayesian methods yielded well-resolved and highly similar trees. Bayesian posterior probabilities were high for most clades; bootstrap (parsimony) support was reliable for approximately half of the internal nodes. Parsimony analysis of the morphological dataset yielded a poorly resolved tree, whereas total evidence analysis (molecular plus morphological data) yielded a phylogenetic hypothesis consistent with, but less resolved than trees inferred from combined molecular data. Parsimony mapping of morphological characters on the 3-gene trees showed that most structural features of steinernematids are highly homoplastic. The distribution of nematode foraging strategies on these trees predicts that S. hermaphroditum, S. diaprepesi and S. longicaudum (US isolate) have cruise forager behaviours.  相似文献

Behavioural traits have been used extensively in recent years as an important character source for making phylogenetic inferences. The phylogenetic positions of the members of the Apini subtribe are increasingly being debated, and new characters must be examined. We analysed the presence and absence of certain behavioural patterns, as well as the sequences of some of these patterns, to generate 79 characters. Eleven species comprised the ingroup, and Xylocopini comprised the outgroup. Parsimony analysis showed that the most parsimonious tree was (Euglossina(Bombina(Apina+Meliponina))). This topology is consistent with most studies that use morphological data and the few that use behavioural data, which suggests that advanced eusociality arose only once in a common ancestor of the clade Apina plus Meliponina; however, this hypothesis is inconsistent with our molecular data. Thus we considered behavioural, molecular, and morphological data and recovered the same topology, in which eusociality has a single origin in corbiculate bees.  相似文献

The Aphnaeinae (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) are a largely African subfamily of 278 described species that exhibit extraordinary life‐history variation. The larvae of these butterflies typically form mutualistic associations with ants, and feed on a wide variety of plants, including 23 families in 19 orders. However, at least one species in each of 9 of the 17 genera is aphytophagous, parasitically feeding on the eggs, brood or regurgitations of ants. This diversity in diet and type of symbiotic association makes the phylogenetic relations of the Aphnaeinae of particular interest. A phylogenetic hypothesis for the Aphnaeinae was inferred from 4.4 kb covering the mitochondrial marker COI and five nuclear markers (wg, H3, CAD, GAPDH and EF1α) for each of 79 ingroup taxa representing 15 of the 17 currently recognized genera, as well as three outgroup taxa. Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses all support Heath's systematic revision of the clade based on morphological characters. Ancestral range inference suggests an African origin for the subfamily with a single dispersal into Asia. The common ancestor of the aphnaeines likely associated with myrmicine ants in the genus Crematogaster and plants of the order Fabales.  相似文献

The Sepsidae is, with approximately 300 described species, a relatively small family of cyclorrhaphan flies whose behaviour, morphology, and development have been extensively studied. However, currently the only available tree for Sepsidae is more than 10 years old and was based entirely on morphological characters. Here, we present the results of parsimony and Bayesian analyses based on 75 species, ten genes, and morphology. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses produce largely congruent and well‐supported topologies regardless of whether indels are coded as 5th character states, as missing values, or all sites with indels are removed. The tree confirms the monophyly of Sepsidae and identifies the Ropalomeridae as its sister group. With regard to higher‐level relationships, we identify widespread conflict between the morphological and the DNA sequence data. The proposed hypothesis based on both partitions largely reflects the signal in the molecular data. Particularly surprising is the rejection of two relationship hypotheses with strong morphological support, namely the sister group relationship between Orygma and the remaining Sepsidae and the monophyly of the Sepsis species group. Our partitioned Bremer support (PBS) analyses imply that indel coding has a stronger effect on the relative performance of individual gene partitions than the exclusion of alignment‐ambiguous sequences or the location of a gene on the mitochondrial or nuclear genome. However, these analyses also reveal unexpectedly strong fluctuations in PBS values given that indel treatment has only a minor effect on tree topology and jacknife support. These unexpected fluctuations highlight the need for a comparative study across multiple data sets that investigates the influence of conflict and indel treatment on PBS values. © The Willi Hennig Society 2008.  相似文献

We assess phylogenetic relationships within the polychaete family Hesionidae from morphological data combined with nucleotide data from 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, 16S rDNA and COI. Parsimony and Bayesian analyses were performed on two data sets; the first was based on a more restricted set of terminals with both morphological and molecular data (17 ingroup terminals), while the second included additional taxa with morphological data only (25 ingroup terminals). The different sets of terminals yielded fully congruent results, as did the parsimony and the Bayesian analyses. Our results indicate high levels of homoplasy in traditionally used morphological characters in the group, and that Hesioninae, Gyptini and Gyptis are nonmonophyletic. Hesionini (mainly Hesione and Leocrates ), Psamathini (mainly Hesiospina , Micropodarke , Nereimyra , Psamathe and Syllidia ), Ophiodrominae (Gyptini and Ophiodromini) and Ophiodromini (mainly Heteropodarke , Ophiodromus and Podarkeopsis ) are monophyletic and agree with previous classifications, and Hesionini is probably the sister to all other hesionids. The placements of the small hesionids capricornia and Lizardia , the hydrothermal vent taxa Hesiodeira and Hesiolyra , and the newly described Hesiobranchia , remain uncertain.  相似文献

Background  

Ants of the genus Lasius are ecologically important and an important system for evolutionary research. Progress in evolutionary research has been hindered by the lack of a well-founded phylogeny of the subgenera, with three previous attempts disagreeing. Here we employed two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 16S ribosomal RNA), comprising 1,265 bp, together with 64 morphological characters, to recover the phylogeny of Lasius by Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony inference after exploration of potential causes of phylogenetic distortion. We use the resulting framework to infer evolutionary pathways for social parasitism and fungiculture.  相似文献

Evolutionary biologists have adopted simple likelihood models for purposes of estimating ancestral states and evaluating character independence on specified phylogenies; however, for purposes of estimating phylogenies by using discrete morphological data, maximum parsimony remains the only option. This paper explores the possibility of using standard, well-behaved Markov models for estimating morphological phylogenies (including branch lengths) under the likelihood criterion. An important modification of standard Markov models involves making the likelihood conditional on characters being variable, because constant characters are absent in morphological data sets. Without this modification, branch lengths are often overestimated, resulting in potentially serious biases in tree topology selection. Several new avenues of research are opened by an explicitly model-based approach to phylogenetic analysis of discrete morphological data, including combined-data likelihood analyses (morphology + sequence data), likelihood ratio tests, and Bayesian analyses.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to delimit the taxa of the Crataegus rosei complex using an integrative approach that incorporates a suite of molecular (cpDNA and nuclear microsatellite markers), morphological, and geometric morphometric characters. One hundred and ten plants from 19 populations that encompass the entire distribution range of the species complex were collected and examined along with herbarium specimens. Parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses were run using morphological, molecular, and both the morphological and molecular data sets combined. Analyses to determine genetic structure based on microsatellite data and multivariate analyses incorporating geometric morphometrics were also done to identify differences in leaf shape. The results supported the recognition of two taxa: C. rosei with high levels of gene flow among its populations, remarkable morphological variation and a wide distribution range and C. rosei var. amoena, composed of a few isolated populations in the high elevation location of Cerro Potosí; a new specific epithet will be decided for the latter in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants.  相似文献

We examined phylogenetic relationships among halobatine water striders (Hemiptera, Gerridae) using molecular and morphological data. The molecular data set was 780 bp DNA sequence data from the 3' half of the mitochondria! gene encoding cytochrome oxidase subunit I from 19 species of sea skaters, Halobates , and one species from each of three related genera, Asclepios annandalei, Austrobates rivularis , and Eurymetra natalensis. The morphological data set was a slightly modified version of a previously published data set. Unweighted parsimony analyses of the molecular data set gave one tree with weak support for most branches. Maximum likelihood analysis of the same data set gave a tree with slightly different topology, but reveiled many of the clades found in parsimony analyses of the morphological data set. Parsimony analyses of the combined molecular + morphology data sets gave a better resolved and better supported tree than did analyses of any single data set. The phytogeny of Halobates presented here allows a more rigorous evaluation of several prior hypotheses about evolutionary processes in marine water striders. In particular, it supports the hypothesis of at least two separate transitions from coastal to oceanic environments.  相似文献

The taxonomy of Lomechusini Fleming has a complex history. Recent studies have shown that this group is polyphyletic; however, little is known about the evolutionary interrelationships among its constituent genera. The goals of the present study are to infer the phylogenetic relationships of Falagonia Sharp and closely related genera; to define the boundaries of those genera based on synapomorphic characters; and to explore the evolution of myrmecophily within the lineage. The phylogenetic analyses are based exclusively on morphological characters of adults. A total of 36 operational taxonomic units were used for the analysis. The best trees were selected based on maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference. During the parsimony reconstruction, different weighting strategies were used to recover the most robust phylogenetic hypothesis. Although minor differences were observed in the results of the different analyses, the topologies were consistent throughout. Several groups of genera proposed by Seevers (1965), such as the ‘Tetradonia’ and ‘Ecitopora’ groups, were not recovered. Thus, these may represent nonmonophyletic groups that were based on nonsynapomorphic diagnostic characters. Our analyses consistently recovered the genera Asheidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Delgadoidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Falagonia, Newtonidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Pseudofalagonia Santiago‐Jiménez, Sharpidium Santiago‐Jiménez, Tetradonia Wasmann and Thayeridium Santiago‐Jiménez, forming a monophyletic group that we have called the ‘Asheidium complex’. Falagonia mexicana Sharp shows seven autapomorphies, none of which were used to establish the genus. Based on the phylogenetic results, myrmecophily has evolved independently at least three times within the lineage. This study, based on morphological characters, is one of the first approaches towards gaining an understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within the polyphyletic tribe Lomechusini.  相似文献
