Female newts of the genus Triturus deposit and wrap their eggs individually in the submerged leaves of aquatic macrophytes. Although this behaviour has previously been described, the different elements of the oviposition process have not been fully characterized nor any attempt made to quantify the behavioural elements. The study examined the oviposition behaviour of the two similarly sized species, Triturus helveticus and T. vulgaris on a standardized substrate macrophyte, Rorippa nasturtium–aquaticum. Continuous focal sampling was used to develop a baseline of discrete behavioural elements enabling quantification and comparison of oviposition behaviour between the two species. The results showed that the same pattern of elements was followed for each egg laid and the same key elements of the process were present in each newt species. Although these are broadly similar in size, there were striking differences in certain aspects of the oviposition sequence between the two species. Key findings were that leaf sniffing and leaf flexing and a measure of the duration of ovipositing were all significantly greater in females of T. helveticus and females of T. vulgaris laid significantly more eggs than those of T. helveticus in a standard observation period. The work presented here defines a baseline ethogram and shows how it can be used to reveal quantifiable differences in closely related species. This demonstrates its value in furthering our understanding of oviposition – a key aspect of female behaviour currently understudied in Triturus behavioural ecology, despite its intrinsic interest and value in understanding recruitment and maintenance of populations.  相似文献

We tested the hybrid superiority hypothesis in the zone of overlap and hybridization of the newts Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus. To do so, we compared size, age, and growth-related parameters in F1 hybrids and both parental species in Mayenne, France. We found significant differences in snout-vent length (SVL), body mass and average lifespan between the parental species and hybrids, increasing from T. cristatus – T. marmoratus – hybrids. The relation between age and SVL fitted von Bertalanffy's growth model and showed that SVLmax was significantly larger in hybrids than in the parental species, while the growth coefficient was lower in hybrids and T. marmoratus than in T. cristatus. Triturus cristatus appears to be the better competitor, since it attains sexual maturity faster and thus achieves more annual breeding opportunities. At the evolutionary level, the observed heterosis appears not to have further consequences as the hybrids are largely infertile. Our results support the hypothesis raised for the genus Triturus, that infertile hybrids allocate resources to growth.  相似文献

We studied spatial niche metrics of large-bodied newts (Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus) in three breeding ponds in western France. Adults and larvae were sampled with underwater funnel traps. Larvae were identified to the species with diagnostic microsatellite DNA markers. The distribution of adult T. cristatus and T. marmoratus across pond regions differed in one out of six cases, no differences were observed between larvae (two ponds studied). Niche overlap and niche breadth indices across resource states defined as pond regions or individual traps were high (Schoener's C: pond regions 0.60–0.98, traps 0.35–0.71; Levins' B: pond regions 0.71–0.98, traps 0.35–0.76). Adults of large-bodied newts significantly differed in resource use from small-bodied newts (T. helveticus). The results are discussed in view of the occurrence of interspecific breeding attempts, and the unpredictable ecological characteristics of newt breeding ponds.  相似文献

Chromosome banding in amphibia   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
The distribution of constitutive heterochromatin on the chromosomes of Triturus a. alpestris, T. v. vulgaris and T. h. helveticus (Amphibia, Urodela) was investigated. Sex-specific chromosomes were determined in the karyotypes of T. a. alpestris (chromosomes 4) and T. v. vulgaris (chromosomes 5). The male animals have one heteromorphic chromosome pair, of which only one homologue displays heterochromatic telomeres in the long arms; the telomeres of the other homologue are euchromatic. This chromosome pair is always homomorphic and without telomeric heterochromatin in the female animals. There is a highly reduced crossing-over frequency between the heteromorphic chromosome arms in the male meiosis of T. a. alpestris; in T. v. vulgaris no crossing-over at all occurs between the heteromorphic chromosome arms. No heteromorphisms between the homologues exist on the corresponding lampbrush chromosomes of the female meiosis. In T. h. helveticus no sex-specific heteromorphism of the constitutive heterochromatin could be determined. The male animals of this species, however, already possess a chromosome pair with a greatly reduced frequency of chiasma-formation in the long arms. The C-band patterns and the pairing configurations of the sex-specific chromosomes in the male meiosis indicate an XX/XY-type of sex-determination for the three species. A revision of the literature about experimental interspecies hybridizations, gonadic structure of haploid and polyploid animals, and sex-linked genes yielded further evidence in favor of male heterogamety. The results moreover suggest that the heterochromatinization of the Y-chromosome was the primary step in the evolution of the sex chromosomes.  相似文献

Length‐weight and length‐length relationships were investigated for 13 freshwater fish species from the lower Jinsha River, southwest China (from 101°32′49.63″E; 26°35′38.27″N to 104°37′48.14″E; 28°45′59.55″N). Fish were sampled from five sites during 2014 and 2016, using trap‐nets, gillnets (major mesh size: 2–6 cm), longline and electrofishing. Length‐weight relationships for six and length‐length relationships for 12 species are the first report to FishBase, respectively. Moreover, new maximum length for 11 species are also presented to FishBase in this study. All regressions were highly significant (< .001), with the coefficient of determination r> .950. These information will be helpful for management and conservation in local fishes and fisheries.  相似文献

Length–weight relationship (LWR) was estimated for 12 elasmobranch species; five shark species, four species of rays and three species of guitar fishes from north‐eastern Arabian Sea, India. Five major landing centres of Maharashtra were selected; Satpati (Lat. 19°43′15″N, Long. 72°42′00″E), Naigaon (Lat. 19°19′32″N, Long. 72°48′54″E), Versova (Lat. 19°08′33″N, Long. 72°48′11″E), New ferry Wharf (Lat. 18°57′29″N Long. 72°51′01″E) and Sassoon dock (Lat. 18°54′42″N, Long. 72°49′33″E). Samples were collected fortnightly during August 2016 to October 2017 from various gears; drift gill nets (Hung length 114–143 m and #100–270 mm) off Satpati coast at 35–50 m depth, dol nets (length 50–65 m and cod end # 30–69 mm) in Naigaon at 38–50 m depth and trawl (length 33–72 m and cod end # 17–32 mm) in Versova, New ferry Wharf and Sassoon dock operated at 20–50 m depth. Multiday fishing was carried out with 2–3 fishing trips in a month, each trip with duration of 7–13 days. Soaking time of gill net and dol net varied from 4 to 8 hr while each trawl haul lasted for 3–4 hr. Length–weight/Disc‐width‐weight relationship showed good fit with r2 values varying from 0.818 to 0.999. In addition to information on LWR, new maximum size for three species of elasmobranchs is reported in this paper.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) of three fish species: Scomberomorus commerson, Alepes vari, and A. kleinii were estimated from Kerala waters, south‐west coast of India. Fish were captured between June 2016 and June 2017 by various gears such as ring seine (8–26 mm mesh size), trawl (30–40 mm cod end mesh size), hook and line (hook number VI–XII), smaller mesh sized drift gill net (26–90 mm) and larger one (120–170 mm) for bigger size fishes. Fish were collected on weekly basis from Cochin Fisheries Harbour (Lat. 09°56′327″N, Long. 76°15′764″E), Munambam Fisheries Harbour (Lat. 10°10′965″N, Long. 76°10′258″E), Kalamukku (Lat. 09°59′924″N, Long. 76°14′564″E) and Chellanam (Lat. 09°47′950″N, Long. 76°16′551″E). All LWRs were significant with r2 values ranged from 0.944 to 0.996 and b values ranged from 2.722 to 3.021 (< .001). In addition, this study provides the information on LWRs and new maximum size for Alepes vari and A. kleinii.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationships (LWRs) for four fish species from the River Ganga (India) is presented. Sampling was conducted in the lower stretch of the river (Buxar: 25°33′43.90″N and 83°56′3.10″E to Freserganj: 21°35′40.58″N and 88°15′28.92″E) on tri‐monthly basis from September 2016 to December 2017. Specimens were caught in gill nets (mesh, 18–68 mm), cast nets (mesh, 12–14 mm), seine nets (mesh, 12–14 mm) and various traditional traps those were put over night and lifted in early morning. Total length and wet body weight of fish were measured to the nearest 0.1 cm and 0.01 g by a digital caliper and electronic balance respectively. From LWRs, the estimated b values were found to be 2.88 (Pisodonophis boro) to 3.17 (Gagata sexualis) whereas a value ranged from 0.001 (Pisodonophis boro) to 0.009 (Botia lohachata). As per FishBase, the species Gagata sexualis and Botia lohachata had new TLmax reported for LWR estimation.  相似文献

The MspI family of highly repeated sequences is a centromeric satellite DNA representing about 1% of the genome of the Italian smooth newt, Triturus vulgaris meridionalis. We have studied the structure, genomic organization, chromosomal localization and conservation across species of this family. MspI sequences are around 197 bp long, as shown by sequencing of three cloned units. The family is organized in large clusters of tandemly arrayed units, present at almost all the centromeres of T.v. meridionalis, and is well conserved in the T.v. vulgaris subspecies. Conserved MspI sequences are also present in the related species T. helveticus, where they appear to be clustered at the centromeres of only a few chromosomes. MspI sequences are not found in other Triturus species analysed. The correlation of these sequences with the overall distribution pattern of heterochromatin and the extent of their conservation within the genus Triturus, are discussed.  相似文献

The behaviour in groups of both sexes of marbled newts (Triturus marmoratus) from Sintra, Portugal, kept for a few weeks in a large aquarium, is described. Behaviour patterns described for this species and for other species in this genus were recognised. The following behaviours are described for the first time: Walk-over, Land-over, Stand-on, Show, Erect-body, Yawn, Circle, and Dig. Females seem to have a more active role in courtship than is usually considered. The behaviour frequencies for each sex were analysed using simulation statistics. Some elements usually classified as male sexual behaviours occur in both sexes and are likely to play other social roles. Received in revised form: 31 May 2001 Electronic Publication  相似文献

We developed a set of di‐ and tetranucleotide microsatellite markers for the Alpine newt, Triturus alpestris. Polymorphism as detected in 39 individuals ranged from 3 to 32 alleles at a locus. Cross‐priming with samples of five other Triturus species showed extremely poor levels of cross‐species utility. Still, these markers are suitable for studies of inter‐ and intrapopulation genetic diversity in the focal species.  相似文献

A karyological analysis was carried out on two populations ofTriturus montandoni, one from Poland and another from Rumania. For both samples, morphometric characteristics and C-banding pattern of mitotic chromosomes are provided. Only slight differences between specimens from two geographic localities were found. Data on chiasma frequency and distribution are presented for male meiosis. No sex-related heteromorphism was found and for none of the chromosomal arms was a consistent absence of chiasmata recorded. There was a relatively high proportion of spermatocyte metaphases I with chiasmata on both arms of all chromosomes in all specimens studied. It is concluded that there are no well-defined sex chromosomes in the chromosomal complement of the maleT. montandoni. The findings are compared with previous studies on chromosome morphology, C-banding pattern, and meiosis in closely related species,T. vulgaris andT. helveticus.  相似文献

Abstract: We examined the density of 2 endangered amphibians, natterjack toads (Bufo calamita) and yellow-bellied toads (Bombina variegata), in 150 breeding pools at each of 2 military training areas in the German state of Bavaria. We selected pools to ensure a wide range of observable ground disturbance resulting from military vehicular traffic during cross-country maneuvers. Both species exhibited significant affinity for pools with high levels of ground disturbance. Natterjack toads preferred pools with 80–100% ground disturbance; yellow-bellied toads preferentially occupied pools with 40–100% ground disturbance. Pools occupied by the target species were characterized by higher levels of bare ground and minimal vegetation. Among other observed amphibians, European edible frogs (Rana esculenta) preferred pools with ≤60% ground disturbance, less bare ground, more vegetative cover, and disturbance >2 years old. Common tree frogs (Hyla arborea), smooth newts (Triturus vulgaris), and alpine newts (T. alpestris) showed no preference for level of disturbance; densities were correlated to parameters apparently unrelated to disturbance. The habitat mosaic created by the heterogeneous nature of military training disturbance may help explain the high biodiversity that often characterizes military training areas. Preservation of native biodiversity is dependent on maintaining an appropriate disturbance regime that, in turn, maintains a habitat mosaic conducive to the presence of native species adapted to a broad disturbance—succession continuum. Length–weight (LWR) and length–length (LLR) relationships were estimated for specimens of two gobiid species collected from the Anzali Wetland and its related streams in the southern Caspian Sea basin, in August 2017. These represent the first reports of LWR and LLR data for Rhinogobius cf. similis Gill, 1859 (37°28′13″N, 49°20′33″E; 50 individuals) and Proterorhinus nasalis (De Filippi, 1863) (36°54′10.89″N, 53°48′48.33″E; 30 individuals) from the Wetland. A new maximum length is reported for P. nasalis. The length–weight parameter b for these species ranged a minimum of 2.99 for Rhinogobius cf. similis to a maximum of 3.04 for P. nasalis with regression coefficients (r2) ranging from .95 to .97. All LLRs were highly significant (r2>.96).  相似文献

The development of microsatellite loci has become more efficient using next‐generation sequencing (NGS) approaches, and many studies imply that the amount of applicable loci is large. However, few studies have sought to quantify the number of loci that are retained for use out of the thousands of sequence reads initially obtained. We analyzed the success rate of microsatellite loci development for three amphibian species using a 454 NGS approach on tetra‐nucleotide motif‐enriched species‐specific libraries. The number of sequence reads obtained differed strongly between species and ranged from 19,562 for Triturus cristatus to 55,626 for Lissotriton helveticus, with 52,075 reads obtained for Calotriton asper. PHOBOS was used to identify sequences with tetra‐nucleotide repeat motifs with a minimum repeat number of ten and high quality primer binding sites. Of 107 sequences for T. cristatus, 316 for C. asper and 319 for L. helveticus, we tested the amplification success, polymorphism, and degree of heterozygosity for 41 primer combinations each for C. asper and T. cristatus, and 22 for L. helveticus. We found 11 polymorphic loci for T. cristatus, 20 loci for C. asper, and 15 loci for L. helveticus. Extrapolated, the number of potentially amplifiable loci (PALs) resulted in estimated species‐specific success rates of 0.15% (T. cristatus), 0.30% (C. asper), and 0.39% (L. helveticus). Compared with representative Illumina NGS approaches, our applied 454‐sequencing approach on specifically enriched sublibraries proved to be quite competitive in terms of success rates and number of finally applicable loci.  相似文献

Triturus vulgaris (smooth newt), Triturus helveticus or T. vulgaris (palmate or smooth newt), Triturus sp. (newt), Pelobates fuscus (common spadefoot), Bufo bufo (common toad), Bufo calamita (natterjack toad), Bufo sp. (toad), Rana arvalis (moor frog), Rana temporaria (common frog), Rana sp. (frog), Anguis fragilis (slow worm), Lacerta cf. L. vivipara (common lizard), Natrix natrix (grass snake), and Natrix sp. (grass, viperine, or dice snake) were identified at the Middle Pleistocene Boxgrove Site, West Sussex, England. This is the first British fossil record of Pelobates fuscus and the earliest fossil record in Britain for the endangered species Bufo calamita. All of these herpetological species are extant and all of them occur in Britain today with the exception of Pelobates fuscus and Rana arvalis that presently live on the European continent.

The Boxgrove, Westbury, and West Runton British pre‐Anglian Middle Pleistocene herpetofaunas show no apparent differences among themselves in patterns of species composition, diversity, or number of exotics. But these three herpetofaunas together have [1] less species diversity and [2] fewer exotic continental species than in the Cudmore Grove British post‐Anglian Middle Pleistocene herpetofauna.

Only the Terrestral Sequence Unit at Boxgrove yielded enough herpetological species for paleoecological interpretation. These taxa indicate a quiet pool surrounded by a somewhat humid vegetated area that gave way to a more xerophytic sandy area, and a paleoclimate at least as warm and perhaps somewhat warmer than occurs in the area today.  相似文献

This study investigates length‐weight and length‐length relationships of two species of the tropical shads, Tenualosa macrura (Bleeker, 1852) and Tenualosa toli (Valenciennes, 1847) collected from the coastal waters of Sadong (1°30′59.4”N and 110°44′46.4”E) and Sebuyau (1°31′26.8”N and 110°58′05.8”E), Sarawak, Malaysia. The fish were captured using gill nets (mesh size range 5–12 cm) operated by mechanized boat along the coast of Sadong and Sebuyau, Sarawak. Relative growth coefficient (b) was 2.942 and 3.408 for males and females of T. macrura while 2.909 and 3.178 for males and females of T. toli. All LWRs were significant (p < .05) between sexes for both species with the coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from .85 to .99. This report provides the reference of length weight relationship (LWR) models for the two species in their range of distribution.  相似文献

Length‐weight relationship parameters were calculated for six fish species from São Marcos Bay, in Northeast Brazil (the segment between 02°35′55″S and 44°20′58″W; 02°34′53″S and 44°21′48″W; 02º42′25″S and 44º26′46″W). The specimens were caught quarterly from April 2010 to February 2013, using monofilament gillnets (2, 4 and 6 cm between knots) from 100 m to 3,000 m long and 4 m to 6 m high. The present study covers a much wider size range for four species and adds new information for the maximum length of Notarius bonillai.  相似文献
