The efficiency of pitfall trapping for polyphagous predatory Carabidae   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
ABSTRACT.
  • 1 The efficiency of pitfall trapping was investigated for seven carabid species, using time-lapse video recording equipment, in the laboratory.
  • 2 The effects of differing substrates, trap designs and seasons of collection on the capture rates of the carabids was also investigated.
  • 3 Capture rate differed significantly between the species studied. The differences in capture rates between the species were unrelated to beetle size, speed of movement and diurnal behaviour.
  • 4 Few differences arose in the capture rates when type of substrate or trap or season of capture were changed.

The relationship between number of holes in a grain probe trap body and capture of stored-grain pests was determined in laboratory tests using adults of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), and the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). Polyvinylchloride (PVC) probe bodies were attached to electronic sensor heads, and insect captures were recorded electronically using an Electronic Grain Probe Insect Counter (EGPIC) system. In comparisons among PVC probe trap bodies with 60-492 holes, tested at 71 insects per kg in 2.8 kg of soft wheat in cylindrical mini-silos, sawtoothed grain beetle and rice weevil captures were directly related to number of holes in the probe trap body, but there was no relationship for red flour beetle capture. Subsequent tests were conducted comparing sawtoothed grain beetle and rice weevil captures in a PVC probe body with 210 holes over a 40-cm long trapping surface with two commercially available probe traps, a polycarbonate (Lexan) probe trap with 180 holes over a 14-cm long trapping surface and a polyethylene (WBII) probe trap with 750 holes over a 34-cm long trapping surface. The highest percentage capture of both species was in the WBII probe trap, but the 210-hole PVC probe body was as effective as the Lexan probe body for rice weevils and sawtoothed grain beetles at 71 and 17 insects per kg of wheat, respectively.  相似文献

  1. Anisandrus maiche (Stark) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is a non-native ambrosia beetle recently detected in northwestern Indiana. There is a critical need for advanced methods to detect and manage this potentially destructive beetle. Identifying semiochemicals that function as attractants or repellents can inform management practices to protect high-value plantings of hardwood trees.
  2. We evaluated the extent to which (S)-(−)-verbenone, (E)-(±)-conophthorin and ethanol influence trap capture of A. maiche using two trap types and heights. We also investigated the effect of ethanol release rate on trap capture.
  3. Traps baited with ethanol alone captured the most beetles, while traps baited with (S)-(−)-verbenone or (E)-(±)-conophthorin alone captured few A. maiche, and each compound decreased capture when paired with ethanol lures.
  4. There was no difference in mean capture of A. maiche between trap types across treatments, and the height of ethanol-baited traps did not influence the capture rate suggesting this species is widely distributed throughout the canopy.
  5. Our results suggest that (S)-(−)-verbenone and (E)-(±)-conophthorin are effective repellents for A. maiche and a release rate of at least 3 g/day of ethanol enhances trap to capture.

The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is an important insect pest in food processing facilities. Pheromone trapping is frequently used to monitor red flour beetle populations in structures; however, the optimal trap density and the relationship between trap captures and beetle density is not known. Two experiments were performed concurrently in environmentally controlled 30‐m2 walk‐in chambers to determine the relationship between aggregation pheromone trap captures of red flour beetles and beetle and trap number. In one experiment, beetle density was kept constant at 200 individuals per chamber while trap number was varied from 1 to 8, and in the other experiment trap number remained constant at one per chamber while beetle density varied from 20 to 800 individuals. Results indicated that approximately one out of 23 red flour beetles were captured in a trap. Number of beetles captured in traps increased significantly as beetle density increased; however, the proportion of beetles captured remained consistent across beetle densities with a mean of 4.7 ± 0.6% of individuals captured. Trap captures varied significantly with trap placement within experimental chambers, indicating that subtle differences in the trapping environment can influence trap captures. Data suggested that trap densities of 0.07–0.10 m?2 (2–3 traps per chamber) would maximize trap capture, whereas a trap density of 0.13 m?2 (four traps per chamber) would maximize the predictive ability of a trapping equation estimating beetle density from trap captures. Results provide information needed to more thoroughly explore how environmental factors might influence red flour beetle trap capture in the absence of changes in beetle density. Further understanding of these relationships will allow for more accurate assessments of absolute beetle density from pheromone trap capture data.  相似文献

Spruce beetle populations (Dendroctonus rufipennis) (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) in Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) stands were monitored at twelve sites for 6 years in northern Colorado using pheromone‐baited Lindgren funnel traps. During the trapping period, over 30,000 beetles were captured, and beetle abundance data were used to construct empirical models of trap capture phenology based on day of year, accumulation of thermal units and thermal day thresholds, with the goal of informing future regional trapping efforts and producing a simple model for use by forest managers. Ordinal day models outperformed thermal accumulation and thermal threshold models in both predictive power and parsimony. Mean date of earliest capture was Day 153 (June 2) and ranged from Day 126 to Day 161 (May 6–June 10), and mean date of final capture was Day 243 (August 31) and ranged from Day 220 to Day 286 (August 8–October 13). A two‐parameter logistic function was the most parsimonious of several ordinal day models, accounting for 81% of the variance in cumulative trap capture across all sites and dates. The model predicts 50% of trap captures to occur by Day 181 (June 30). This model has application as a decision support tool for forest ecosystem managers concerned with the timing of trap deployment or D. rufipennis mitigation treatments.  相似文献

We used an enclosure trap with a lifting net to capture Alpine chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). The trap was activated by remote radio-controlled electromagnets powered by photovoltaic modules. The up-net trap had considerable advantages over mechanical methods described in the literature for the capture of chamois. During 36 capture sessions, we captured 50 chamois, or 1.39 animals per session. Capture success was 96.2% of the average of 1.4 animals that entered the trap during a capture session. Mortality was 2%, and another 2% of the captured chamois was injured. There were no known postrelease capture-induced pathologies, and the capture effort was 1.7 man-days per chamois. The trap allowed to select specific target animals and to capture sex–age classes (particularly kids and their mothers) that are normally difficult or impossible to capture. It could be set off from a distance; it only required about 4 h to assemble and could be operated by as few as two people.  相似文献

Anagrus atomus L. is an important egg parasitoid of the green leafhopper Empoasca decipiens Paoli. In this study the ability of the parasitoid to locate and parasitize its host was investigated on four host plants, i.e., broad beans (Vicia faba L.), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), and French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). For each plant species, the behavior of the parasitoid was observed on E. decipiens infested and noninfested plants. Searching and oviposition behavior were characterized by drumming, probing, and resting. Parasitoids spent significantly less time on non-infested than infested plants, 274.5 and 875.7 s, respectively, and no probing behavior was observed on non-infested plants. Frequency of resting behavior was significantly greater on non-infested than on infested plants. Total foraging time was significantly longer on infested than on non-infested plants, indicating that A. atomus females can efficiently discriminate between leaves with and without infestation. Parasitism of A. atomus was influenced by parasitoid density, with the highest parasitism rate (64.0%) obtained at a density of 10 A. atomus females/0.1356 m2 but the number of parasitized eggs per female and the searching efficiency decreased with increasing parasitoid density.  相似文献

This was the first study to have surveyed the spatial and temporal structure of Apocrita wasps in lowbush blueberry fields, a unique native agricultural landscape in Maine and eastern Canada. The relative abundances of wasps associated with lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) were investigated in 33 blueberry fields throughout Washington County, Maine, USA. Native wasps were captured during the springs and summers of 1997 and 1998 in Malaise traps erected along a transect in each field. Vegetation sampling was also conducted along these transects to quantify available floral resources. Data indicate the abundance of the total wasp community was positively associated with the abundance of sheep laurel (Kalmia angustifolia L.). Relationships between trap capture of 13 wasp morphospecies and other flowering weeds were also investigated. Most taxa in 1998 were positively associated with one or more of the following flowering plants: bunchberry (Cornus canadensis L.), bush honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera P. Mill.), dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium L.), sheep laurel, and witherod (Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides L.). Similar results were not evident in 1997 because the method used to sample vegetation was not as extensive as that used in 1998. However, sheep laurel was positively associated with the wasp genera Microplitis spp. and Phanerotoma spp. during both years.  相似文献

The trap crop strategy is based on host plant discrimination by pests and their parasitoids, which may respond differently to various host plant cues, thus affecting their respective population distributions. We conducted a three-year study to compare the responses of the most damaging pest of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), the pollen beetle (Meligethes aeneus Fab.), and its hymenopteran parasitoids to various potential trap crops: Brassica nigra L., Raphanus sativus var. olifera Pers. and Eruca sativa Mill. with that to B. napus. We recorded their abundance, oviposition preferences and the species composition of the parasitoids. Our results show that oviposition rates of the pollen beetle and its parasitoids as well the species composition of the parasitoids varies with plant species. We discuss the potential of these plant species, especially B. nigra, to enhance the natural control of the beetle by fostering several parasitoid species. The species composition of the parasitoids on different host plants compared with on B. napus is presented for the first time. In addition to trapping pests, the trap crops could also act as parasitoid banks, enhancing natural control of the pest through providing suitable hosts for natural enemies, without increasing the population growth of the next generation of pests.  相似文献

Changes in permeability of cell membranes (judged from electrolyte leakage) were examined on leaves of 7- to 11-day-old seedlings of maize (Zea mays L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), and on etiolated shoots of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) immediately after cooling plants for 1–24 h at 2°C and one day after a 24-h chilling treatment. A gradually increasing leakage of ions from the cells was observed upon prolongation of chilling exposure, with the maximum attained by the end of 24-h chilling treatment. The leakage of electrolyte was slightly reduced in the post-treatment period but it was still higher than the electrolyte leakage from the control samples (untreated plants). The cold treatment of chilling-sensitive plants (but not of potato) revealed a positive correlation between the rates of lipid peroxidation, indicative of chilling injury, and the electrolyte efflux (r = 0.61–0.96). The evaluation of plant susceptibility to injury showed that millet and potato plants recovered from the chilling damage in 24 h after the treatment, whereas maize and cucumber plants did not show such a recovery.  相似文献

Abstract

This research was aimed to assess the photosynthetic activities of barley (Hordeum valgare L.), clover (Trifolium repens L.), and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) under different saline conditions with two strains of Pseudomonas putida (UW3 and UW4) treatments. An exceptional observation was revealed on barley biomass ratio (288.8%) that irrigated with brackish saline water (10,000?mg/L) with the presence of P. putida UW4 strain. In general, P. putida UW3 strain was significantly increased crops biomass ratio (249.4%, 202.1%, and 212.5%) for barley, pearl millet, and clover, respectively, which were irrigated with 10,000?mg/L brackish saline water. Plant root and shoot systems were significantly increased in their length and weight reflecting the improvement of plants’ photosynthetic activities under salt stress conditions with the presence of P. putida strains. The results from pulse amplitude modulation fluorometry showed that the plants were recovered from the saline stress effect once P. putida strains were applied. The outcome of this research was highly recommended to apply P. putida strains (UW3 and UW4) with field crops for phytoremediation, in particular, where salinity (soil and/or brackish water) was environmentally challenging.  相似文献

Changes in the levels of superoxide anion radical and total peroxides were studied immediately after the chilling of 7–11-day-old seedlings of maize (Zea mays L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), and etiolated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) shoots at 2°C for 1–24 h and one day after 24-h chilling. A short-term (1 h) chilling of chilling-sensitive plants resulted in the 2.4–7.5-fold acceleration of the O 2 generation. A longer chilling period reduced somewhat the rate of O 2 generation, but this rate did not achieve the control level. The highest level of H2O2 was observed after 2-h chilling with its subsequent lowering. In the cold-tolerant potato, the levels of O 2 and peroxides reduced after chilling. The rate of lipid peroxidation (an index characterizing cold-induced membrane damage) increased gradually with the lengthening of the chilling period. Reactive oxygen species are supposed to be involved in the induction of the oxidative stress during chilling of chilling-sensitive plants and in the triggering of cold-induced damage.  相似文献

The perilla seed bugs, Nysius plebeius Distant and Nysius hidakai Nakatani, are emerging pests of perilla crop in Korea. Here, we investigated the life-history variables of N. plebeius and N. hidakai on five commonly grown crop seeds: perilla [Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt.], sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.)], proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and foxtail millet (Setaria italic L.). Bug oviposition, total developmental period, adult emergence, adult longevity and adult weight of both Nysius species were determined in both choice and no-choice tests. The oviposition and development periods of N. plebeius and N. hidakai varied significantly among seed species. The most preferred seed species for oviposition were perilla seeds, followed by sesame, sorghum and foxtail millet, whereas proso millet seeds were the least preferred. The bugs development period was faster in perilla seeds, with higher adult emergence, greater adult longevity and heavier adult weight. The higher oviposition preference and faster development with longer longevity of both Nysius species on perilla seeds is probably due to the physicochemical and nutritional attributes of the seeds. This information may enable the exploration of resistant genetic materials and chemical traits associated with seeds for breeding programme. Further, the outcomes of this study are discussed in terms of bug's behavioural response to crop seeds and management strategy of Nysius species as alternative to chemical management.  相似文献

Buschini, M.L.T. and Fajardo, S. 2009. Biology of the solitary wasp Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) agamemnon Richards 1934 (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) in trap‐nests. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91 : 426–432. Some Trypoxylon species build their nests in preexisting tubular cavities like hollow stems and beetle borings in branches. Study of the biology of these insects is relatively easy because the females of these wasps nest with enormous success in trap‐nests. The aim of this study was to investigate the abundance, seasonality and life‐history of Trypoxylon agamemnon. For capture of these insects, trap‐nests were installed in the Parque Municipal das Araucárias in araucaria forest, grassland and swamp, from December, 2001 to December, 2005. Two hundred and ninety seven nests were obtained. They were constructed more often during the summer (from December to April). The nests were built only in araucaria forest and consisted of a linear series of cells, divided by mud partitions, whose number varied from 1 to 7. Normally they have only one vestibular cell. The inner cells had been provisioned, usually with spiders of Anyphaenidae family. Sex‐ratio was strongly female biased. Its main natural enemies included Chrysididae, Ichneumonidae and Tachinidae.  相似文献

1 Conjoint comparisons were made between trap captures of male diamondback moths, Plutella xylostella (L.), and gas chromatographic measures of sex pheromone emissions from grey and red rubber septa. The objective was to correlate trap captures with emissions. 2 Irrespective of their composition, all mixtures that were released from grey septa effected the capture of more males than the same mixtures released from red septa. There was no difference between captures by any of the mixtures when emitted from grey septa. However, when emitted from red septa, a nominal 50 : 50 ratio of (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11–16:Al) and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11–16:Ac) effected the capture of more males than either nominal 70 : 30 or 67 : 23 ratios. Generally, the emitted ratios of Z11–16:Al and Z11–16:Ac from both types of septa were variable, ranging between 6 : 10 to about 40 : 10. 3 No statistical correlation was found between the emissions and trap captures by any single component, group or ratio of components. These results suggest that the environment substantially affects the emission of sex pheromone components from rubber septa. As a result, the demonstration of geographical biotypes of diamondback moths and other insects may be difficult.  相似文献

1 The dispersal of Ips typographus L. (Col., Scolytidae) was studied using a mark–release–recapture approach in a grid of traps equipped with pheromone lures of release rates of about 8.4 mg/day of 2‐methyl‐3‐buten‐2‐ol (MB) and 0.29 mg/day of (S)‐cis‐verbenol (cV) in experiment 1, and 1.2 mg/day of MB and 0.04 mg/day of cV in experiment 2. 2 We investigated whether beetle dispersal reflected the simple diffusion pattern observed in previous I. typographus experiments, for which attractant release rates generally approached 50 mg/day of MB and 1 mg/day of cV. We also examined how environmental parameters (wind) and human activities (felling) could influence the beetles' flight. 3 The recapture percentage was higher in experiment 1 than in experiment 2: respectively, 7.0% (with 64 traps) and 2.3% (with 100 traps) of the beetles that took off were caught in the traps. 4 With the higher release rate (experiment 1), trap catches decreased with increased distance, whereas with the lower release rate (experiment 2), trap catches rose between 50 and 100 m then decreased with increasing distance. 5 Flight was little orientated by prevailing wind directions, a feature probably explained by the low wind speeds (0–1.2 m/s) observed throughout the study. 6 High trap catches of unmarked beetles close to areas undergoing thinning activities suggest that the presence of freshly cut spruce and larch material could have an influence on dispersal, attracting the beetles into the felling area. Spatial analyses show that capture patterns were autocorrelated up to distances of about 250 m.  相似文献

The ability of three commercially available trap types to catch Lucilia (Diptera: Calliphoridae) blowflies was assessed on three sheep farms in southwest England in 2008. The aim was to evaluate their relative value for the control of ovine cutaneous myiasis (sheep blowfly strike) on farms. There was a highly significant difference between the total number of female Lucilia caught per day by the traps, with an Agrilure Trap (Agrimin Ltd, Brigg, U.K.) catching more than the other trap types (Rescue Disposable Fly Trap, Sterling International, Spokane, U.S.A.; Redtop Trap, Miller Methods, Johannesburg, South Africa). However, there was no significant difference between the traps in the numbers of female Lucilia sericata (Meigen) caught. Nevertheless, consideration of the rate at which female L. sericata were caught over time showed that the Agrilure trap did not begin catching until about 30 days after its initial deployment. It subsequently caught L. sericata at a faster rate than the other two traps. The data suggest that the freeze‐dried liver bait used in the Agrilure trap required a period of about 30 days to become fully rehydrated and decompose to the degree required to attract and catch L. sericata. Once the bait was attractive, however, the trap outperformed the other two traps in terms of the rate of L. sericata capture. The Agrilure trap would appear to be the most effective of the designs tested for use against sheep blowfly and blowfly strike in the U.K., but care would be needed to ensure that the traps were deployed in advance of the blowfly season so that the bait was suitably aged when trapping was required.  相似文献

The effects of differential soil crusting, as achieved by varying the raindrop size, and depth of sowing on seedling emergence of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.) and pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides L.) were investigated. Three drop diameters: 2.75, 1.65 and 0.93 mm and four depths of sowing: 2, 4, 6, and 8 cm were studied. Mean time of emergence increased with increase in raindrop size and depth of sowing. Crops differed in their emergence capacity under adverse soil conditions from delay in the emergence of chickpea to complete failure in the case of pigeonpea. Pearl millet was not significantly affected by drop size but was found to be sensitive to depths beyond 4 cm. Within the chickpea crop, the variety H 208 was observed to have better emergence qualities than Pusa 209. Other parameters like epicotyl diameter, swelling index, and the area of crust broken by the emerging seedling were measured.  相似文献
