Summary Turkey sperm were exposed to 2.45 GHz microwave radiation in a temperature controlled waveguide apparatus. Temperature was maintained at 40.0 ± 0.5° C. The sperm were exposed for 30 min to a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 1, 10, or 50 mW/g. Before and following microwave exposure the following parameters were examined: percentage viability, percentage abnormal sperm, and release of the enzymes lactate hydrogenase (LDH) and glutamic oxalic transaminase (GOT). These parameters were not altered significantly by microwave exposure under the conditions tested.  相似文献

New types of beam-plasma devices generating intense stochastic microwave radiation in the interaction of electron beams with hybrid plasma waveguides were developed and put into operation at the National Science Center Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology (Ukraine). The objective of the paper is to discuss the results of theoretical and experimental studies and numerical simulations of the normal and oblique incidence of linearly polarized electromagnetic waves on an interface between a vacuum and an overcritical plasma. The main results of the reported investigations are as follows: (i) for the parameter values under analysis, the transmission coefficient for microwaves with a stochastically jumping phase is one order of magnitude greater than that for a broadband regular electromagnetic wave with the same spectral density; (ii) the electrons are heated most efficiently by obliquely incident waves with a stochastically jumping phase and, in addition, the electron distribution function has a high-energy tail; and (iii) necessary conditions for gas breakdown and for the initiation of a microwave discharge in stochastic fields in a light source are determined. The anomalously large transmission coefficient for microwaves, the anomalous character of the breakdown conditions, the anomalous behavior of microwave gas discharges, and the anomalous nature of collisionless electron heating, are attributed to stochastic jumps in the phase of microwave radiation.  相似文献

There has been much public interest and controversy about the effects of exposure to low levels of microwave and radiofrequency radiation. Of particular interest are reports of radiation-induced changes in brain tissue and animal behaviour. This review considers the evidence supporting some of these effects. The main conclusions of the review are: The levels of tracer substances in the brain tissue of conscious or anaesthetized animals can be altered by acute exposure to microwave radiation that is sufficient to raise the brain temperature by several degrees Celsius. However, the results of such experiments are difficult to interpret, being in some cases contradictory or influenced by various confounding factors, and the data cannot be considered sufficient to recommend a threshold for human tolerance. The evidence that calcium ion exchange in living nervous tissues is affected by amplitude-modulated radiofrequency and microwave radiation is inconclusive. Exposure sufficient to cause an increase in core temperature of about 1 degree C, corresponding to specific energy absorption rates of about 2-8 W kg-1 may adversely affect animal behaviour.  相似文献

The induction of stress proteins in HeLa and CHO cells was investigated following a 2 h exposure to radiofrequency (RF) or microwave radiation. Cells were exposed or sham exposed in vitro under isothermal (37 ± 0.2 °C) conditions. HeLa cells were exposed to 27- or 2450 MHz continuous wave (CW) radiation at a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 25 W/kg. CHO cells were exposed to CW 27 MHz radiation at a SAR of 100 W/kg. Parallel positive control studies included 2 h exposure of HeLa or CHO cells to 40 °C or to 45 μM cadmium sulfate. Stress protein induction was assayed 24 h after treatment by electrophoresis of whole-cell extracted protein labeled with [35S]-methionine. Both cell types exhibited well-characterized responses to the positive control stresses. Under these exposure conditions, neither microwave nor RF radiation had a detectable effect on stress protein induction as determined by either comparison of RF-exposed cells with sham-exposed cells or comparison with heat-stressed or Cd++ positive control cells. Large unilamellar dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol (DPPG) liposomes loaded with an aqueous chemotherapeutic drug, cytosine arabinofuranoside (ARA-C), were exposed for 30 min to 60 W/kg continuous-wave (CW) 100-MHz or 2.45-GHz radiation in vitro at temperatures between 37 degrees C and 43 degrees C. Liposomes were exposed in HEPES buffer or in HEPES buffer supplemented with 44% by volume fetal calf serum (FCS). Characteristic phase transition responses were detected in the range of 39 degrees C to 40 degrees C with the presence of FCS, increasing maximum % release of 3H-ARA-C by 20% relative to HEPES suspension. Neither frequency of electromagnetic radiation had any detectable effect on liposome permeability or the location of the phase transition in the presence or absence of FCS.  相似文献

For the understanding of radiation action on biological systems like cellular macromolecules (e.g., DNA in its higher structures) a synergistic approach of experiments and quantitative modelling of working hypotheses is necessary. Further on, the influence on calculated results of certain assumptions in such working hypotheses must critically be evaluated. In the present work, this issue is highlighted in two aspects for the case of DNA damage in single cells. First, yields of double-strand breaks and frequency distributions of DNA fragment lengths after ion irradiation were calculated using different assumptions on the DNA target model. Compared to a former target model now a moderate effect due to the inclusion of a spherical chromatin domain model has been found. Second, the influence of assumptions on particular geometric chromosome models on calculated chromosome aberration data is illustrated with two target-modelling approaches for this end point. An international seminar was held June 4-6, 1997, on the biological effects and related health hazards of ambient or environmental static and extremely low frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields (0-300 Hz). It was cosponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), the German, Japanese, and Swiss governments. Speakers provided overviews of the scientific literature that were discussed by participants of the meeting. Subsequently, expert working groups formulated this report, which evaluates possible health effects from exposure to static and ELF electric and magnetic fields and identifies gaps in knowledge requiring more research to improve health risk assessments. The working groups concluded that, although health hazards exist from exposure to ELF fields at high field strengths, the literature does not establish that health hazards are associated with exposure to low-level fields, including environmental levels. Similarly, exposure to static electric fields at levels currently found in the living and working environment or acute exposure to static magnetic fields at flux densities below 2 T, were not found to have demonstrated adverse health consequences. However, reports of biological effects from low-level ELF-field exposure and chronic exposure to static magnetic fields were identified that need replication and further study for WHO to assess any possible health consequences. Ambient static electric fields have not been reported to cause any direct adverse health effects, and so no further research in this area was deemed necessary.  相似文献

Irradiation of the inoculum with 50 Hz frequency electromagnetic field for 3 h practically did not influence the growth of suspension culture of one-celled green algae Dunaliella tertiolecta and Tetraselmis viridis. The irradiation for 4 h led to approximately 30% reduction of growth. After 6-hour irradiation the growth of Dunaliella tertiolecta was reduced by 50% and the growth of Tetraselmis viridis was reduced by 70%. The irradiation of hydras for 3 h showed no visible effect. The irradiation for 4 h stimulated a little the growth and regeneration of injured hydras. The effect of 24 h irradiation resulted in the shortening of lifetime of uninjured and injured hydras. Summary The significance of the enzyme cholinesterase in studies on the biological effects of microwaves is discussed. Experiments were performed on the direct effect of microwave radiation on the enzyme activity in aqueous solution, and in rabbit blood. Microwave radiation was found to have an effect only when the temperature increase was great enough to denature the enzyme.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the plasma effect on the generation of microwave radiation in systems with a virtual cathode. Using a triode with a virtual cathode as an example, it is shown that the cathode and anode plasmas reduce the generation efficiency; in particular, the power of the generated microwave radiation decreases and the radiation frequency and the microwave pulse duration change appreciably. It is demonstrated that, at high microwave powers, the power radiated into free space can be reduced by the plasma generated at the surface of the output window. This plasma appears due to discharges developing on the window surface under the combined action of bremsstrahlung, UV radiation, electrons and ions arriving from the beam formation zone, and the microwave electric field.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the influence of 864 MHz and 935 MHz radiofrequency/microwave (RF/MW) fields on the growth, colony-forming ability, and viability of V79 cells (continuous line). Cell samples with 1 x 10(4) V79 cells each, were exposed to continuous wave frequencies of 864 MHz and 935 MHz for 1, 2 and 3 hours. Exposed samples were matched with unexposed control samples. Specific absorption rate (SAR) was 0.08 W/kg for the 864 MHz or 0.12 W/kg for the 935 MHz field. Cell growth and viability were determined by counting cells every day for five days after exposure. Colony-forming ability was assessed by counting colonies seven days after exposure. The growth of the 864 MHz-irradiated cells was significant after two- and three-hour exposure 72 hours after irradiation (p < 0.05). The similar was observed 72 hours after exposure for cells exposed to 935 MHz microwaves for three hours (p <0.05). Colony-forming ability and cell viability in V79 cells exposed to 864 MHz or 935 MHz microwaves did not significantly differ from control cells. The two applied RF/MW fields showed similar effects on the growth, colony-forming ability and viability of V79 cells. Cell growth impact was time-dependent for both fields.  相似文献

Summary Cultured rat fibroblasts were exposed to 41 cationic fluorescent probes of very varied hydrophilicity/lipophilicity. Outcome of probe-cell interaction fell into one of the following categories: probe failed to enter the cells; probe accumulated on cell surfaces; probe accumulated in mitochondria, and/or in other intracellular regions. The observations were analysed using a Simplistic Chinese Box (SCB) approach, and the following conclusions were reached. It was the hydrophilic probes which failed to enter cells, whilst extremely lipophilic probes were retained on the cell surfaces. Only the slightly lipophilic cationic probes were permeant, and accumulated in mitochondria. Using the probes log P values to model hydrophilicity/lipophilicity, effective cationic mitochondrial stains can be specified numerically so: 0P probe<+5. This SCB model was used to rationalise a variety of earlier observations on the action of mitochondrial probes. The applicability of the SCB approach to integrate image-based and biochemical investigations was demonstrated by using the action of chlorpromazine on mitochondrial action as a case example.  相似文献

This paper traces the history of the development of the Radiofrequency Radiation Dosimetry Handbook and its subsequent impact on radio frequency radiation exposure standards. The author's recollections are used to illustrate the behind the scenes efforts of the individuals involved in this project. The action of doxorubicin, a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, on liposomes of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine obtained by extrusion, with or without cholesterol, and on monolayers of the same composition, was determined by photon correlation spectroscopy, penetration kinetics, and adsorption isotherms. Doxorubicin produced a wider vesicle distribution in both of liposomes, but liposomes containing cholesterol underwent an increase of mean diameter as well as polydispersity. In contrast, films containing cholesterol showed least interaction with the drug. Since both lipids are neutral, any interaction must be primarily hydrophobic.  相似文献

The review is focused on the molecular structure and function of the proteins composing the actin-based cytokeletal cortex, located at the cytoplasmic face of plasma membranes of eucaryotic cells, which stabilizes integral membrane proteins in separate domains of cell membranes. It includes a survey of the molecular properties of teh proteins of the erythrocyte membrane skeleton such as spectrin, ankyrin, protein 4.1, and adducin. The properties of the immunological counterparts of erythroid cortical proteins found in nonerythroid tissues and cells are compared. The structural organization and function of the newly discovered class of calcium-binding proteins, nonerythroid peripheral membrane proteins, calpactins, are also described. Finally, the discussion of some experimental models illustrates that the membrane skeleton of living cells is actively involved in a wide variety of essential biological functions ranging from differentiation, to maintenance of cell polarity and cell shape, and regulation of exocytotic processes.  相似文献
