Leaf shape is one of the most variable plant traits. Previous work has provided much indirect evidence that leaf-shape variation is adaptive and that leaf shape influences thermoregulation, water balance, and resistance to natural enemies. Nevertheless, there is little direct evidence that leaf shape actually affects plant fitness. In this study, we first demonstrate that populations of the ivyleaf morning glory, Ipomoea hederacea, in North and South Carolina are frequently polymorphic at a locus that influences leaf shape. We then employ several field experiments to show that this polymorphism is subject to selection. In two of the experiments, at different sites, heterozygotes enjoyed a fitness advantage over both homozygotes. At a third site, in one year directional selection favored lobed leaves, whereas in a second year the pattern of fitnesses was consistent with similar directional selection or heterozygote superiority. Computer simulations of heterozygote advantage under the high selfing rates of I. hederacea indicate that balancing selection of the magnitude observed can by itself stabilize the polymorphism, although spatially and temporally variable selection may also contribute to its long-term maintenance. 相似文献

Theory predicts that, for taxa that are already substantially postzygotically isolated but for which hybrid mating is still costly, enhanced prezygotic isolation will be favored. Here, we tested this hypothesis by examining the potential contribution of one particular floral trait, herkogamy, to prezygotic isolation between two species of morning glory, Ipomoea hederacea and Ipomoea purpurea. This trait was experimentally manipulated to determine whether it is a likely prezygotic isolating barrier in naturally pollinated arrays in the field. Emasculated I. hederacea flowers set significantly fewer seeds than did control flowers, indicating that clustering of anthers and stigma in I. hederacea enhances prezygotic isolation from I. purpurea. We hypothesize that this occurs through some combination of mechanical protection and increased self-pollination, with the effect of mechanical protection estimated to be 30% greater than the effect of increased selfing. Our results identify stigma-anther proximity as a likely prezygotic isolating barrier and target of selection in the presence of heterospecific pollen flow, and provide motivation for further study of the role of floral morphology in reproductive isolation in this system. 相似文献

Inbreeding depression and selfing rate were investigated in the self-compatible vine Ipomoea hederacea to assess the variability of the breeding system. Inbreeding depression differed between populations and the magnitude varied at germination, growth (as measured by aboveground biomass), and reproductive potential. Plants from Macon County, Alabama, USA, had significant inbreeding depression (31%) at germination, but no significant inbreeding depression for aboveground biomass or number of reproductive structures (buds and flowers) at 45 d post germination in the greenhouse or in the field. Plants from Morgan County, Alabama, however, had significant inbreeding depression (>50%) for all three stages in the greenhouse. In allozyme comparisons, five of the 11 I. hederacea populations surveyed had high selfing rates (66.66-92.53%) and high levels of homozygosity (F(IS) = 0.500-0.861) in 2003, and three of four populations surveyed in 2004 had selfing rates that exceeded 50%. High selfing rates, high levels of homozygosity, and low levels of inbreeding depression suggest that inbreeding depression may not present a significant barrier to the transmission of selfing alleles in some populations of I. hederacea, but does not account for the maintenance of a mixed mating system in other populations. 相似文献

The effects of the cyclic tetrapeptide phytotoxin, tentoxin, on variable chlorophyll fluorescence quenching and the P515 electrochromic absorbance change were examined in tentoxin-sensitive and -resistant species and an interspecies hybrid. Immediately after infiltration of leaf discs, up to 100 μM tentoxin had no effect on the O, I, D, or P portions of the fluoresence transients of either tentoxin-sensitive or -resistant plants. However, the quenching of fluorescence following maximal fluorescence was reduced by approximately fourfold in tentoxin-treated tissues of tentoxin-sensitive plants, but was unaffected in resistant plants. Tentoxin significantly increased the magnitude of the P515 electrochromic absorbance change in all tentoxin sensitive plants by an average of approximately twofold. However, it was unaffected by tentoxin in resistant species. These data suggest that there is a close correlation between interaction of tentoxin with CF1 ATPase in vivo and the ability to cause chlorosis in developing chloroplasts. 相似文献

Several types of evidence indicate that tentoxin-caused reduction of chlorophyll accumulation in greening primary leaves of mung bean [ Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek cv. Berken] is due to both photobleaching and decreased protochlorophyll(ide) synthesis. Greening was greater under dim (2.5 μmol m-2 s-1 ) far-red or white light than under bright (180 to 200 μmol m-2 s-1 ) white light in tentoxin-treated tissues, whereas there was a positive correlation between fluence rate and greening in control tissues. Under continuous white light (100 μmol m-2 s-1 ) chorophyll(ide) accumulation was slower in tentoxin-treated than in control tissues. This was caused by greater photobleaching of newly formed chlorophyll(ide), as well as by decreased protochlorophyll(ide) synthesis. Photobleaching did not affect protochlorophyll(ide) synthesis in control or tentoxin-treated tissues. Chlorophyll(ide) was less stable in tentoxin-treated than in control tissues during a 24 h period of darkness. Plastids of tentoxin-treated tissues had all of the chlorophyll-proteins of control plants. Etioplasts of tentoxin-treated plants contained normal galactolipid contents, but galactolipids in these plants were greatly reduced in white light. Reduced chlorophyll accumulation caused by tentoxin is apparently the result of both photodestruction and of reduced synthesis of chlorophyll. 相似文献

为挖掘番薯(Ipomoea)属EST-SSR资源,从NCBI数据库下载23406条甘薯(Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.)EST和62282条牵牛(Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth)EST,利用生物信息学软件预处理、去冗余、拼接处理后得到12812条无冗余的甘薯EST(6.70 Mb)和28422条牵牛唯一序列(17.19 Mb)。对这些序列进行SSR搜索,在甘薯上获得328个SSR位点,发生频率为2.56%;牵牛上筛选到962个SSR位点,出现频率为3.38%。甘薯和牵牛EST-SSR具有多个共同特征:在SSR位点中,主要是二核苷酸重复类型,其次是三核苷酸重复;在二核苷酸重复中,出现最多的重复基序为AG/CT,其次是AT/AT;在三核苷酸重复中,主要基序是AAG/CCT;SSR位点的长度主要集中在20~22 bp。结果表明,这些搜索出的EST-SSR重复基序类型丰富、多态性潜能高,具有较高的开发和利用价值。 相似文献

福寿螺和五爪金龙是两种危害严重的入侵生物,利用五爪金龙防治稻田福寿螺是以害治害的方法.盆栽条件下研究了五爪金龙乙醇提取物毒杀福寿螺的效果,以及其对水稻苗生长的影响.在砂培条件下五爪金龙乙醇提取物及其分离得到的甲醇相、乙酸乙酯相、乙醚相水溶液不仅对福寿螺起到毒杀作用, 而且对水稻秧苗生长有促进作用, 毒杀和促进作用由强到弱的顺序均为:乙醇提取物>甲醇相>乙酸乙酯相>乙醚相.在实验浓度范围内五爪金龙乙醇提物对福寿螺的毒杀效果及其对水稻苗促进作用强度均随浓度的增大而增强,在水稻土盆栽条件下抑制福寿螺取食水稻苗的效果与密达差异不显著(p>0.05).五爪金龙乙醇提取物能毒杀福寿螺,对水稻苗的生长没有不利的影响.因此, 利用五爪金龙防治稻田福寿螺危害是环境友好的非化学防治措施,具有良好的应用前景. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Chloroplast development is inhibited in Euglena gracilis strain Z, when greened in a medium containing glucose. This inhibition is reflected not only in the pattern of chlorophyll accumulation but also in the chloroplast ultrastructure and activities of the 2 light reactions of photosynthesis. Chloroplasts of cells greening in the presence of glucose are delayed in déveloping certain structures. Photosystem I activity develops at about the same rate as that of the controls during the first 48 h of greening, after which it develops at a slower rate. The rate of development of photosystem II activity in cells greening in a glucose medium lags considerably behind that of the controls until the later hours of greening. There are similarities between glucose inhibition and chloramphenicol inhibition of chloroplast development. Glucose may inhibit a step in chloroplast development ultimately controlled by the chloroplast genome. 相似文献

Ultrastructures of the mature embryo sac of Calystegia hederacea Wall. and its changes after fertilization are described. The positional organization of the egg cell, the two synergids and the central cell, as well as their interrelationships were studied. Some regions of the cell boundaries between the egg cell and the central cell, as well as between the egg cell and the synergids were devoid of typical cell wall before fertilization, displayed a feature quite similar to the characteristic absence of the cell wall in the fertilization target zone occurred in most angiosperms. Besides the genera ultrastructural characteristics of the egg apparatus and the central cell, there were several unusual aspects in C. hederacea, such as the egg nucleus located above the large vacuole near the chalazal end of the cell, many polyribosomes in the cytoplasm of the egg cell and wall ingrowths on both sides of the hooks of the central cell. All these unusual characteristics seemed to be closely associated with the short duration of the fertilization and the absence of antipodal cells in the mature embryo sac. It is concluded that the female germ unit of C. hecleracea is considered to be a topographical and physiological unit to realize their functions for successful double fertilization. 相似文献

Reductants are often used to reduce Cr(VI) in chemical treatments, yet the effects of the reductants on Cr(VI) phytoremediation are not fully understood. This study investigates the effects of different reductants on Cr(VI) phytoremediation by Ipomoea aquatica in simulated solution with 3 mg L?1 of Cr(VI), pH0 of 6, and an incubation time of 5 days. Results indicate that the applications of S2O32?, Fe0, and Fe2+ at low doses notably increased root Cr concentrations, which were obviously higher than that those in the control (Cr6+ alone). However, high reductant concentrations decreased bioaccumulation of Cr in the roots and shoots of the plant.Statistical results indicate that Cr concentrations were significantly and negatively correlated with Fe concentrations in the roots and shoots of the plant (p < 0.05). This suggest that Fe accumulation inhibited Cr accumulation in the plant. A Cr(VI) concentration of 3 mg L?1 caused short, brown lateral roots with tip necrosis, leaf chlorosis, and noticeable shoot wilting. The leaf necrosis and shoot wilting is caused by oxidative damage of lateral roots by Cr(VI) rather than by the reactive oxygen species generated by the oxidative stress. Addition of the reductants effectively reduced these plant injuries. 相似文献

A novel lectin has been isolated and cloned from leaves of Glechoma hederacea (ground ivy), a typical representative of the plant family Lamiaceae. Biochemical analyses indicated that the G. hederacea agglutinin (Gleheda) is a tetrameric protein consisting of four subunits pairwise linked through an interchain disulphide bridge and exhibits a preferential specificity towards N-acetylgalactosamine. Cloning of the corresponding gene and molecular modeling of the deduced sequence demonstrated that Gleheda shares high sequence similarity with the legume lectins and exhibits the same overall fold and three-dimensional structure as the classical legume lectins. The identification of a soluble and active legume lectin ortholog in G. hederacea not only indicates that the yet unclassified Lamiaceae lectins belong to the same lectin family as the legume lectins, but also sheds a new light on the specificity, physiological role and evolution of the classical legume lectins. 相似文献

Synthesis of chlorophyll was initiated in 5- to 6-day-old dark-grown barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Clipper)seedlings by exposing them to light in the presence of 1-14 C glutamic acid supplied via the roots.The plants were then returned to darkness. At the end of light treatment (T) and after 7 or 18 h dark treatment chlorophylls a and b were extracted, quantified (μgleaf1). purified by HPLC to their magnesium-free derivatives (pheophytin a and b) and their molar radioactivities determined. After 2 h exposure to light followed by 6 h illumination in the presence of 1-14 C glutamic acid, seedlings had accumulated 4-7 nmol chlorophyll leaf1 and had incorporated between 900-1 350 Bq (g fresh weight)1 of radioactive label into the chlorophyll pool. When seedlings were transferred to darkness, label continued to be incorporated and after 18 h the radioactivity of the chlorophyll pool had increased by 300-700 Bq (g fresh weight)1. Net chlorophyll content, however, remained constant during dark treatment. The increase in radioactivity of the chlorophyll pool in darkness represented the difference between a net increase of label incorporated into chlorophyll a and a small loss of label from chlorophyll b. The absence of measurable radioactivity in the phytol moiety of labelled chlorophyll a, extracted at the endof dark treatment, demonstrated thatincorporation of label was into the tetrapyrrole moiely of chlorophyll and not into the phytol chain. Light-independent incorporation of 1-14 C glutamic acid into chlorophyll of greening barley seedlings transferred to darkness indicates that chlorophyll synthesis continues when light is withheld. We interpret the net gain in radioactivity of chlorophyll in darkness, in the absence of a net gain in chlorophyll content, to chlorophyll turnover i.e. to simultaneous synthesis and breakdown of chlorophyll when etiolated greening barley seedlings are transferred to darkness. 相似文献

The assignment is presented for the principal phosphorescence bands of protochlorophyll(ide), chlorophyllide and chlorophyll in etiolated and greening bean leaves measured at -196°C using a mechanical phosphoroscope. Protochlorophyll(ide) phosophorescence spectra in etiolated leaves consist of three bands with maxima at 870, 920 and 970 nm. Excitation spectra show that the 870 nm band belongs to the short wavelength protochlorophyll(ide), P627. The latter two bands correspond to the protochlorophyll(ide) forms, P637 and P650. The overall quantum yield for P650 phosphorescence in etiolated leaves is near to that in solutions of monomeric protochlorophyll, indicating a rather high efficiency of the protochlorophyll(ide) triplet state formation in frozen plant material. Short-term (2–20 min) illumination of etiolated leaves at the temperature range from -30 to 20°C leads to the appearance of new phosphorescence bands at about 990–1000 and 940 nm. Judging from excitation and emission spectra, the former band belongs to aggregated chlorophyllide, the latter one, to monomeric chlorophyll or chlorophyllide. This indicates that both monomeric and aggregated pigments are formed at this stage of leaf greening. After preillumination for 1 h at room temperature, chlorophyll phosphorescence predominates. The spectral maximum of this phosphorescence is at 955–960 nm, the lifetime is about 2 ms, and the maximum of the excitation spectrum lies at 668 nm. Further greening leads to a sharp drop of the chlorophyll phosphorescence intensity and to a shift of the phosphorescence maximum to 980 nm, while the phosphorescence lifetime and a maximum of the phosphorescence excitation spectrum remains unaltered. The data suggest that chlorophyll phosphorescence belongs to the short wavelength, newly synthesized chlorophyll, not bound to chloroplast carotenoids. Thus, the phosphorescence measurement can be efficiently used to study newly formed chlorophyll and its precursors in etiolated and greening leaves and to address various problems arising in the analysis of chlorophyll biosynthesis.Abbreviations Pchl

The etioplast/chloroplast transformation in angiosperms is controlled by light; most of the processes are mediated by phytochrome. We have shown that in the primary leaves of etiolated seedlings of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. cv. Kolibri), fire-bean ( Phaseolus multiflorus L. cv. Preisgewinner) and in the cotyledons of etiolated sun flower seedlings ( Helianthus annuus L. cv. macrocarpa) the chlorophyll accumulation in the phase after the end of the lag phase can be greatly stimulated by a cold predarkening period. This effect is not necessarily coupled with a red preirradiation. Furthermore the lag phase can be dramatically shortened by the cold, dark pretreatment, whereas the amount of photoconvertible protochlorophyll(ide) in the darkness remains unaffected by the cold, dark pretreatment. The stimulating effect of a cold, predarkening period on greening is fully reversible by a warm, dark phase that is placed between the cold period and the onset of the continuous white light phase. These findings cannot be generalized: We could demonstrate that in the tropical plant Momordica charantia greening under white light was not affected by different temperature pretreatments during predarkening. Archaeological studies of plant remains have indicated that an increase in seed size is frequently correlated with both intensive
cultivation and domestication of seed crop plants. To test if starch granules of domesticated root crops are significantly
larger than those of wild or less intensively cultivated plants, archaeological and modern specimens of manioc and sweet potato
were sampled for starch granules, and granule size was compared across a temporal sequence. The results indicate that a gross
generalization can be made that modern specimens of both manioc and sweet potato yield larger starch granules than some archaeological
specimens. It does appear, however, that modern domesticated manioc roots produce significantly larger-sized starch granules
than those of its purported wild ancestor. Additionally, there exist two lines of evidence that the coastal Peruvian and lowland
Neotropical regional types of manioc differ from one another and have been separate for several millennia. These findings
indicate that manioc may have been domesticated more than once. 相似文献
