Many studies have reported strength gains in older adults following high-intensity resistance training. However, the muscle
contraction types examined have been primarily isometric (static) or concentric (CONC; shortening). Less is known about how
eccentric (ECC) strength in older adults responds to training or about the efficacy of ECC contractions as training stimuli
in these subjects, even though muscle contractions of this type are performed in most training regimens and daily physical
activities. In this study, 15 physically active, healthy older women [68 (5) years; mean (SD)] completed an 8-week resistance
training program of two sessions per week. Training consisted of three sets of eight repetitions of CONC ankle plantar flexion
(PF) and ECC dorsiflexion (DF), at greater than 80% of the initial peak torque, in a standing position only. Subjects were
tested in standing and supine positions for: (1) strength over a range of 10° DF to 20° PF for both CONC and ECC; DF and PF
(2) passive resistive torque of the plantar flexors at 6°/s; and (3) DF and PF rate of torque development. All strength testing
and training was done at 30°/s. Significant increases (P < 0.01) were found for both CONC DF (↑30%) and ECC DF (↑17%) peak torque in the standing position. No significant changes
occurred for DF strength as measured with the subjects in the supine position, PF strength in either position, passive resistive
torque, or rate of torque development. In summary, strength gains occurred only in the dorsiflexors, which were trained using
ECC contractions. Improvements in DF strength were specific to the position of training, which has implications for the transferability
of strength gains to functional tasks such as maintaining gait.

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of two different training protocols, which differ in the duration of the eccentric phase, on the one-repetition maximum (1RM), thickness and contractile properties of elbow flexors. Twenty untrained college students were randomly divided into two experimental groups, based on the training tempo: FEG (Faster Eccentric Group: 1/0/1/0) and SEG (Slower Eccentric Group: 4/0/1/0). Training intervention was a biceps bending exercise, conducted twice a week for 7 weeks. The intensity (60–70% RM), sets (3–4) and rest intervals (120 s) were held constant, while repetitions were performed until it was not possible to maintain a set duration. In the initial and final measurements, 1RM, muscle thickness and tensiomyography parameters – contraction time (Tc) and radial deformation (Dm) – were evaluated. An ANCOVA model (using baseline outcomes as covariates) was applied to determine between-group differences at post-test, while Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient was used to investigate the relationship between absolute changes in muscle thickness and Dm. Muscle strength increase was greater for SEG than for FEG (6.0 ± 1.76 vs. 3.30 ± 2.26 kg, p < 0.01). In both groups muscle thickness increased equally (FEG: 3.24 ± 2.01 vs. SEG: 3.57 ± 1.17 mm, p < 0.01), while an overall reduction in Dm was observed (FEG: 1.99 ± 1.20 vs. SEG: 2.26 ± 1.03 mm, p < 0.01). Values of Tc remained unchanged. A significant negative relationship was observed between changes in muscle thickness and Dm (r = -0.763, Adj.R² = 0.560, p < 0.01). These results indicate that the duration of the eccentric phase has no effect on muscle hypertrophy in untrained subjects, but that slower eccentric movement significantly increases 1RM. 相似文献

Maximal eccentric loading has been associated with higher levels of spindle afferent activity but lower levels of integrated EMG as compared to maximal concentric loading. Elbow flexor EMG was recorded from 17 subjects during concentric (CONC) and eccentric (ECC) elbow flexion at 70° s−1 using a Kin-Com dynamometer. We hypothesized that peak EMG amplitude would be more sensitive to fluctuations in facilitation by the spindle primary afferents via the segmental stretch reflex pathway, and that the mean EMG would be more reflective of the ongoing level of muscle activation. A ratio of peak to mean EMG (P/M EMG ratio) was predicted to be larger during maximal eccentric loading than maximal concentric loading. The peak EMG (P<0.013) and the P/M EMG ratio (P<0.001) were significantly greater during the ECC condition than the CONC condition. In a subgroup of three subjects who underwent 3 weeks of eccentrically biased weight training, EMG, peak torque and torque variability were assessed before and after training. P/M EMG ratio decreased, while peak torque and torque variability increased following the training. Differences in the P/M EMG ratio appear to reflect differences in the way eccentric and concentric muscle actions are controlled and do not simply represent less control during the eccentric task. 相似文献

Neurodegenerative diseases and sarcopenia become more prevalent as individuals age and, therefore, represent a serious issue for the healthcare system. Several studies have reported the relationship between physical activity and reduced incidence of dementia or cognitive deterioration. Thus, exercise and strength training are most recommended treatments, but it is proving difficult to engage individuals to initiate exercise and strength training. Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) may provide an alternative and more efficient solution. Although EMS has undergone a decline in use, mainly because of stimulation discomfort, new technologies allow painless application of strong contractions. Such activation can be applied in higher exercise dosages and more efficiently than people are likely to achieve with exercise. Unlike orderly recruitment of motor units (MUs) during low intensity voluntary exercise, EMS activates large fast-twitch MUs with glycolytic fibers preferentially and this could have benefit for prevention and treatment of diabetes and chronic diseases associated with muscle atrophy that ultimately lead to bed-ridden conditions. Recent evidence highlights the potential for EMS to make a major impact on these and other lifestyle related diseases and its role as a useful modality for orthopedic and cardiac rehabilitation. This paper will discuss the potential for EMS to break new ground in effective interventions in these frontiers of medical science. 相似文献

Women (age 20.0 ± 0.5 yr) randomly assigned to Con training (CTG;n = 16), Ecc training (ETG;n = 19), and control (CG;n = 19) groups were tested before andafter 10 wk of unilateral Con or Ecc knee-extension training. Averagetorque measured during Con and Ecc maximal voluntary knee extensions increased 18.4 and 12.8% for CTG, 6.8 and 36.2% for ETG, and 4.7 and1.7% for CG, respectively. Increases by CTG and ETG were greater than for CG (P < 0.05). ForCTG, the increase was greater when measured with Con than with Ecctesting. For ETG, the increase was greater when measured with Ecc thanwith Con testing. The increase by ETG with Ecc testing was greater thanthe increase by CTG with Con testing. Corresponding changes in theintegrated voltage from an electromyogram measured during strengthtesting were 21.7 and 20.0% for CTG, 7.1 and 16.7% for ETG, and8.0 and 9.1% for CG. Quadriceps cross-sectional areameasured by magnetic resonance imaging (sum of 7 slices) increased morein ETG (6.6%) than in CTG (5.0%) (P < 0.05). We conclude that Ecc is more effective than Con isokinetictraining for developing strength in Ecc isokinetic muscle actions andthat Con is more effective than Ecc isokinetic training for developingstrength in Con isokinetic muscle actions. Gains in strength consequentto Con and Ecc training are highly dependent on the muscle action usedfor training and testing. The effects of concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) contractions on Delta plasma volume (PV), heart rate (HR), and lactate in responses to protocols in different body positions were investigated. CON or ECC contractions were performed in either a single-exercise (6 sets of 12 repetitions of leg extensions completed at 80% of 12 repetition maximum [12RM] with 3-minute rest periods) or multiexercise (4 sets of 10 repetitions for both CON and ECC trials of bench press, leg extension, military press, and leg curl at 80% of 10RM with 90-second rest periods) protocols. HR and lactate increased significantly for both protocols from pre- to postexercise for CON but not ECC trials. DeltaPV was greater following both CON single-exercise (-11.48 +/- 1.38%) and multiexercise (-4.64 +/- 0.33%) trials vs. ECC single-exercise (-1.62 +/- 1.69%) and multiexercise (-1.26 +/- 1.20) trials. Data demonstrate ECC exercise in response to single and multiexercise protocols at the same absolute workload as CON exercise produces less cardiovascular stress. 相似文献

Eight men (20-23 years) weight trained 3 days.week-1 for 19 weeks. Training sessions consisted of six sets of a leg press exercise (simultaneous hip and knee extension and ankle plantar flexion) on a weight machine, the last three sets with the heaviest weight that could be used for 7-20 repetitions. In comparison to a control group (n = 6) only the trained group increased (P less than 0.01) weight lifting performance (heaviest weight lifted for one repetition, 29%), and left and right knee extensor cross-sectional area (CAT scanning and computerized planimetry, 11%, P less than 0.05). In contrast, training caused no increase in maximal voluntary isometric knee extension strength, electrically evoked knee extensor peak twitch torque, and knee extensor motor unit activation (interpolated twitch method). These data indicate that a moderate but significant amount of hypertrophy induced by weight training does not necessarily increase performance in an isometric strength task different from the training task but involving the same muscle group. The failure of evoked twitch torque to increase despite hypertrophy may further indicate that moderate hypertrophy in the early stage of strength training may not necessarily cause an increase in intrinsic muscle force generating capacity. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare different normalization methods of electromyographic (EMG) activity of antagonists during isokinetic eccentric and concentric knee movements. Twelve women performed three maximum knee extensions and flexions isometrically and at isokinetic concentric and eccentric angular velocities of 30 °·s−1, 90 °·s−1, 120 °·s−1 and 150 °·s−1. The EMG activity of the vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, vastus medialis and hamstrings was recorded. The antagonist integrated IEMG values were normalized relative to the EMG of the same muscle during an isometric maximal action (static method). The values were also expressed as a percentage of the EMG activity of the same muscle, at the same angle, angular velocity and muscle action (dynamic method) when the muscle was acting as an agonist. Three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) designs indicated significantly greater IEMG normalized with the dynamic method compared to the EMG derived using the static method (P < 0.05). These differences were more evident at concentric angular velocities and at the first and last 20 ° of the movement. The present findings demonstrate that the method of normalization significantly influences the conclusions on antagonistic activity during isokinetic maximum voluntary efforts. The dynamic method of normalization is more appropriate because it considers the effects of muscle action, muscle length and angular velocity on antagonist IEMG. 相似文献

Effects of electromyostimulation versus voluntary isometric training on elbow flexor muscle strength
The purpose of this study was to determine whether 7 weeks of standardized (same number and duration of repetitions, sets and rest strictly identical) electromyostimulation training of the elbow flexor muscles would induce strength gains equivalent to those of voluntary isometric training in isometric, eccentric and concentric contractions. Twenty-five males were randomly assigned to an electromyostimulated group (EMS, n = 9), a voluntary isometric group (VOL, n = 8), or a control group (CON, n = 8). Maximal voluntary isometric, eccentric and concentric strength, electromyographic (EMG) activity of the biceps and triceps brachii muscles, elbow flexor muscle activation (twitch interpolation technique) and contractile properties were assessed before and after the training period. The main findings were that the isometric torque gains of EMS were greater than those of VOL after the training period (P < 0.01) and that the eccentric and concentric torque gains were equivalent. In both groups, we observed that the mechanical twitch (Pt) was increased (P < 0.05) and that torque improvements were not mediated by neural adaptations. Considering the respective intensities of the training programs (i.e., submaximal contractions for EMS versus maximal for VOL), it can be concluded that electromyostimulation training would be more efficient than voluntary isometric training to improve both isometric and dynamic strength. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the force-producing characteristics of boys aged 13 years in relation to fatigue of elbow flexor muscles. Maximal voluntary force in elbow flexion was measured before and after a muscle endurance test (MET) by using an isokinetic dynamometer isometrically, concentrically and eccentrically at three velocities, i.e. 0.21, 0.52, and 1.05 rad · s–1. The MET consisted of maximal concentric and eccentric muscle actions performed alternately at 0.52 rad · s–1 for 50 consecutive trials. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) of elbow flexor muscles (biceps brachii and brachialis) was measured by a B-mode ultrasound apparatus. Although eccentric force showed significantly higher values than concentric force during MET, there was no significant difference in the rate of decline in force between the two actions. There was no significant difference in the rate of decline in force after MET for each velocity and muscle action. Isometric, concentric and eccentric force before MET was significantly related to muscle CSA whereas, after MET, concentric force significantly correlated with muscle CSA but there was no significant correlation between muscle CSA and isometric or eccentric force. From our study, it is therefore suggested that in development to maturity, isometric, concentric and eccentric force decrease at the same rate with advancing muscle fatigue; however, there might be differences among muscle actions in facors affecting force development. 相似文献

Four male subjects aged 23-34 years were studied during 60 days of unilateral strength training and 40 days of detraining. Training was carried out four times a week and consisted of six series of ten maximal isokinetic knee extensions at an angular velocity of 2.09 rad.s-1. At the start and at every 20th day of training and detraining, isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), integrated electromyographic activity (iEMG) and quadriceps muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) assessed at seven fractions of femur length (Lf), by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, were measured on both trained (T) and untrained (UT) legs. Isokinetic torques at 30 degrees before full knee extension were measured before and at the end of training at: 0, 1.05, 2.09, 3.14, 4.19, 5.24 rad.s-1. After 60 days T leg CSA had increased by 8.5% +/- 1.4% (mean +/- SEM, n = 4, p less than 0.001), iEMG by 42.4% +/- 16.5% (p less than 0.01) and MVC by 20.8% +/- 5.4% (p less than 0.01). Changes during detraining had a similar time course to those of training. No changes in UT leg CSA were observed while iEMG and MVC increased by 24.8% +/- 10% (N.S.) and 8.7% +/- 4.3% (N.S.), respectively. The increase in quadriceps muscle CSA was maximal at 2/10 Lf (12.0% +/- 1.5%, p less than 0.01) and minimal, proximally to the knee, at 8/10 Lf (3.5% +/- 1.2%, N.S.). Objective:This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of an 8-week training protocol, based on neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the quadriceps, which was superimposed onto voluntary exercise (NMES+), in comparison to a traditional heavy slow resistance training (HSRT), in individuals with patellar tendinopathy.Methods:Thirty-two physically active participants, aged: 33.6±10.2 years, were divided into two groups: NMES+ or HSRT. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of knee extensor and flexor muscles, power during a countermovement jump (CMJ), and VISA-p questionnaire scores were recorded at the start(T0), 2-weeks(T1), 4-weeks(T2), 6-weeks(T3), 8-weeks(T4) and 4-months post-training (T5). Knee pain and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded at each training session with a 0-10 scale.Results:Knee pain was significantly lower in NMES+ compared to HSRT during all training sessions. No significant between-group differences were found for VISA-p scores and forces recorded during MVICs at T0,T1,T2,T3,T4 and T5. A significant increase of VISA-p and peak forces during MVIC was recorded across-time in both groups. No significant between-group or across-time differences were found for RPE and CMJ parameters.Conclusions:NMES+ and HSRT were equally effective in decreasing tendinopathy symptoms and increasing strength, with NMES+ having the advantage to be a pain-free resistance training modality. 相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of contraction velocity on the eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) torque production of the biceps brachii. After performing warm-up procedures, each male subject (n = 11) completed 3 sets of 5 maximal bilateral CON and ECC isokinetic contractions of the biceps at speeds of 90, 180, and 300 degrees x s(-1) on a Biodex System 3 dynamometer. The men received a 3-minute rest between sets and the order of exercises was randomized. Peak torque (Nm) values were obtained for CON and ECC contractions at each speed. Peak torque scores (ECC vs. CON) were compared using a t-test at each speed. A repeated measures analysis of variance was used to determine differences between speeds. ECC peak torque scores were greater than CON peak torque scores at each given speed: 90 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001; 180 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001; and 300 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001. No differences were found between the ECC peak torque scores (p = 0.62) at any of the speeds. Differences were found among the CON scores (p = 0.004). Post hoc analysis revealed differences between 90 degrees x s(-1) (114.61 +/- 23) and 300 degrees x s(-1) (94.17 +/- 18). These data suggest that ECC contractions of the biceps brachii were somewhat resistant to a force decrement as the result of an increase in velocity, whereas CON muscular actions of the biceps brachii were unable to maintain force as velocity increased. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of resistance training to muscle failure (RT-F) and non-failure (RT-NF) on muscle mass, strength and activation of trained individuals. We also compared the effects of these protocols on muscle architecture parameters. A within-subjects design was used in which 14 participants had one leg randomly assigned to RT-F and the other to RT-NF. Each leg was trained 2 days per week for 10 weeks. Vastus lateralis (VL) muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), pennation angle (PA), fascicle length (FL) and 1-repetition maximum (1-RM) were assessed at baseline (Pre) and after 20 sessions (Post). The electromyographic signal (EMG) was assessed after the training period. RT-F and RT-NF protocols showed significant and similar increases in CSA (RT-F: 13.5% and RT-NF: 18.1%; P < 0.0001), PA (RT-F: 13.7% and RT-NF: 14.4%; P < 0.0001) and FL (RT-F: 11.8% and RT-NF: 8.6%; P < 0.0001). All protocols showed significant and similar increases in leg press (RT-F: 22.3% and RT-NF: 26.7%; P < 0.0001) and leg extension (RT-F: 33.3%, P < 0.0001 and RT-NF: 33.7%; P < 0.0001) 1-RM loads. No significant differences in EMG amplitude were detected between protocols (P > 0.05). In conclusion, RT-F and RT-NF are similarly effective in promoting increases in muscle mass, PA, FL, strength and activation. 相似文献

A human therapeutic that specifically modulates skeletal muscle growth would potentially provide a benefit for a variety of conditions including sarcopenia, cachexia, and muscular dystrophy. Myostatin, a member of the TGF-beta family of growth factors, is a known negative regulator of muscle mass, as mice lacking the myostatin gene have increased muscle mass. Thus, an inhibitor of myostatin may be useful therapeutically as an anabolic agent for muscle. However, since myostatin is expressed in both developing and adult muscles, it is not clear whether it regulates muscle mass during development or in adults. In order to test the hypothesis that myostatin regulates muscle mass in adults, we generated an inhibitory antibody to myostatin and administered it to adult mice. Here we show that mice treated pharmacologically with an antibody to myostatin have increased skeletal muscle mass and increased grip strength. These data show for the first time that myostatin acts postnatally as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth and suggest that myostatin inhibitors could provide a therapeutic benefit in diseases for which muscle mass is limiting. 相似文献

The purpose ofthis study was to determine the effects of concentric (Con) andeccentric (Ecc) muscle actions on leg muscle sympathetic nerve activity(MSNA). Two protocols were utilized. In protocol1, eight subjects performed Con and Ecc arm curls for 2 min, with a resistance representing 50% of one-repetition maximum forCon curls. Heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) weregreater (P < 0.05) during Con thanduring Ecc curls. Similarly, the MSNA was greater(P < 0.05) during Con than during Ecc curls. In protocol 2, eightdifferent subjects performed Con and Ecc arm curls to fatigue, followedby postexercise muscle ischemia, by using the same resistanceas in protocol 1. Endurance time wassignificantly greater for Ecc than for Con curls. The increase in HR,MAP, and MSNA was greater (P < 0.05)during Con than during Ecc curls. However, when the data werenormalized as a function of endurance time, the differences in HR, MAP,and MSNA between Con and Ecc curls were no longer present. HR, MAP, andMSNA responses during postexercise muscle ischemia were similar for Con and Ecc curls. Con curls elicited greater increase(P < 0.05) in blood lactateconcentration than did Ecc curls. In summary, Con actions contributesignificantly more to the increase in cardiovascular and MSNA responsesduring brief, submaximal exercise than do Ecc actions. However, whenperformed to a similar level of effort (i.e., fatigue), Con and Eccmuscle actions elicit similar cardiovascular and MSNA responses. Theseresults indicate that the increase in MSNA during a typical bout ofsubmaximal dynamic exercise is primarily mediated by the musclemetaboreflex, which is stimulated by metabolites produced predominantlyduring Con muscle action. 相似文献

The effects of a short-term strength training programme on resting lymphocyte subsets and stress hormone concentrations were analysed in 32 elderly sedentary subjects. Out of these 32 subjects, 8 women and 8 men [mean age 70.1 (SEM 1.0) years] were randomly assigned to a 8-week strength training programme which consisted of three sets of eight repetitions at 80% of one repetition maximum, for leg press, bilateral leg extension and seated chest press, 3 days a week. The remaining 8 women and 8 men [mean age 70.5 (SEM 0.9) years] served as controls. Absolute counts of lymphocyte subsets (CD20+, CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+, CD3-CD56+CD16+) were measured with a new technique combining fluorescent microspheres and flow cytometry. In the trained subjects, substantial increases in strength took place in one repetition maximum during the 8-week training period for leg press [from means of 20.7 (SEM 1.0) to 23.6 (SEM 1.0) N x kg(-1) LBM (lean body mass)], chest press [from means of 5.4 (SEM 0.3) to 6.2 (SEM 0.3) N x kg(-1) LBM] and bilateral leg extension [from means of 6.3 (SEM 0.2) to 7.4 (SEM 0.3) N x kg(-1) LBM] movements. Baseline cortisol concentration (P < 0.01), CD20+ cell count (P < 0.05), CD3+ cell count (P < 0.05), and CD4+ cell count (P < 0.01) decreased in both groups secondary to circannual variations between winter and summer. No significant effect of strength training on resting adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol concentrations or distributions of lymphocyte subsets at rest was observed. The main finding of this study was to demonstrate that 8-week is too short a duration for a strength training programme to modify counts of lymphocyte subsets at rest in elderly sedentary adults. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of muscle temperature and fatigue during stretch (eccentric) and shortening (concentric) contractions of the maximally electrically activated human adductor pollicis muscle. After immersion of the lower arm in water baths of four different temperatures, the calculated muscle temperatures were 36.8, 31.6, 26.6, and 22.3 degrees C. Normalized (isometric force = 100%) eccentric force increased with stretch velocity to maximal values of 136.4 +/- 1.6 and 162.1 +/- 2.0% at 36.8 and 22.3 degrees C, respectively. After repetitive ischemic concentric contractions, fatigue was less at the lower temperatures, and at all temperatures the loss of eccentric force was smaller than the loss of isometric and concentric force. Consequently, normalized eccentric forces increased during fatigue to 159.7 +/- 4.6 and 185.7 +/- 7.3% at 36.8 and 22.3 degrees C, respectively. Maximal normalized eccentric force increased exponentially (r2 = 0.95) when Vmax was reduced by cooling and/or fatiguing contractions. This may indicate that a reduction in cross-bridge cycling rate could underlie the significant increases in normalized eccentric force found with cooling and fatigue. 相似文献

The effects were investigated in ten women of intensive heavy resistance strength training lasting for 3 weeks on electromyographic (EMG) activity, muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and voluntary force production characteristics of leg extensor muscles. Blood samples for the determinations of serum hormones were taken from five of the subjects. Significant increases occurred in the higher force portions of the isometric force-time curve with an increase of 9.7 (SD 8.4)% (P less than 0.01) in maximal peak force. An increase of 15.8 (SD 20.9)% (P less than 0.05) took place also in the maximal neural activation (integrated EMG) of the trained muscles, while an enlargement of 4.6 (SD 7.4)% (P less than 0.05) occurred in the CSA of the quadriceps femoris muscle. Maximal force per muscle CSA increased significantly (P less than 0.05). No statistically significant changes were observed during the training in the mean concentrations of serum testosterone, free testosterone, cortisol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). The individual concentrations of serum testosterone:SHBG ratio correlated with the individual changes obtained during the training in the muscle CSA (r = 0.99; P less than 0.01). The present findings in women indicated that the increases in maximal strength during short-term but intensive strength training were primarily due to the increased voluntary activation of the trained muscles, while muscle hypertrophy remained limited in magnitude. Large interindividual differences in women in serum testosterone concentrations could indicate corresponding differences in muscle hypertrophy and strength development even during a short-term but intensive strength training period. 相似文献
