Egg maturation and oosorption in Gonatocerus ashmeadi were investigated in the laboratory and the relationship between hind tibia length (HTL) and <12 h egg load, and wing wear and parasitoid age were determined. G. ashmeadi given access to honey-water and hosts, on average, matured 77 eggs in excess of those they were born with. The number of mature eggs in female G. ashmeadi provided honey-water with no hosts significantly declined after 163 degree-days eggs, while the number of ‘dissolved’ eggs (partially disintegrated mature eggs) increased by nine eggs after 163 degree-days. These results are consistent with oosorption. There was a significant positive correlation between HTL and <12 h egg load. The ovigeny index (the number of mature eggs at female emergence divided by potential lifetime fecundity) for G. ashmeadi was calculated as 0.22 indicating that this parasitoid is a syn-ovigenic species when studied under laboratory conditions. There was a significant positive correlation between wing wear (measured as the number of broken setae per wing) and parasitoid age in the laboratory. The practical implications of these results for G. ashmeadi on the biological control of Homalodisca vitripennis are discussed.  相似文献

The ability of two species of aphelinid parasitoids to find and attack Bemisia argentifolii was determined. Experiments were conducted with whitefly patches on single leaf poinsettia plants randomly distributed in canopies of four commercially grown poinsettia crops at an early and late stage of plant growth. Eretmocerus eremicus found experimental patches in canopies of small and large plants more quickly and frequently, and killed more nymphs following patch discovery than Encarsia formosa (Beltsville strain). E. eremicus exhibited a Type I functional response in small and large canopies while E. formosa (Beltsville strain) showed a Type II functional response in small canopies and a weak linear response in large canopies. In greenhouses treated with E. eremicus, canopy size increased 4.6× and nymphs per plant increased 14.2× between small and large canopy experiments. Consequently, area of search for this parasitoid increased 83%, number of wasps counted on patches decreased 74%, and proportion of nymphs killed in artificial patches decreased 47% between small and large canopies. In greenhouses treated with E. formosa Beltsville strain, canopy size increased 7.3× and nymphs per plant increased 25.4× between small and large canopy experiments. Consequently for E. formosa Beltsville strain, area of search increased 11%, number of wasps counted on patches decreased 86%, and proportion of nymphs killed in artificial patches decreased 47% between small and large canopies.  相似文献

Of 198 deermice (Peromyscus spp) collected from various localities in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, 106 (54%) had eimerian oocysts in their feces when examined. These included 50 of 106 (47%) Peromyscus truei, 34 of 54 (63%) Peromyscus maniculatus, 4 of 17 (24%) Peromyscus leucopus, and 18 of 21 (86%) Peromyscus eremicus. The following Eimeria were identified from infected mice: Eimeria arizonensis and Eimeria langebarteli from P. truei; E. arizonensis, Eimeria peromysci, and Eimeria delicata from P. maniculatus; E. arizonensis and Eimeria lachrymalis n. sp. from P. eremicus; and E. langebarteli from P. leucopus. Of the 106 Peromyscus found positive for Eimeria, 97 (91.5%) harbored only a single eimerian species at the time of examination. Sporulated oocysts of E. lachrymalis n. sp. were ellipsoid, 27-35 X 17-21 (30.8 +/- 1.7 X 19.1-0.9) micron, possessed a smooth wall and one polar granule, but lacked a micropyle and an oocyst residuum. Sporocysts were teardrop-shaped, 9-13 X 6-10 (10.9 +/- 0.9 X 7.9 +/- 0.5) micron, and had a Stieda body and sporocyst residuum, but no substieda body. Prepatent periods in experimental infections were 3-6 days after inoculation (DAI) for E. arizonensis (hosts: P. eremicus, P. maniculatus, P. truei); 4-5 DAI for E. peromysci (host: P. maniculatus); 6-9 DAI for E. langebarteli (hosts: P. truei, P. leucopus); and 8-10 DAI for E. lachrymalis (host: P. eremicus). Patency in these infections lasted 6-11 days for E. arizonensis, 5-10 days for E. peromysci, 14-40+ days for E. langebarteli, and 19-50+ days for E. lachrymalis. Eimeria lachrymalis appears to produce occult infections in P. eremicus that can be reactivated upon inoculation of the host with E. arizonensis.  相似文献

With a view to improving the establishment of Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead, a potential natural enemy for suppression of aphids on vegetables, the effects of host deprivation and honey feeding before release on the parasitoid’s egg load and reproduction were studied under laboratory conditions. Host deprivation significantly affected mummy production and survival rate of female parasitoids. A. gifuensis produced more mummies when exposed to a short period (1 and 2 days) of host deprivation, but when host deprivation lasted for 3 days, their mummy production sharply decreased. Offspring produced by parasitoids that had been deprived of hosts for 2 days were much heavier than those produced by parasitoids deprived of hosts for 1 and 3 days. However, host deprivation did not affect emergence rate or offspring sex ratio; the emergence rate was always above 80%, and the offspring sex ratio was always female biased irrespective of whether the host-deprivation period was 1, 2, or 3 days. Honey feeding greatly increased egg load, longevity and decelerated oosorption of A. gifuensis when hosts were absent, and significantly increased parasitoid mummy production in late age. We discuss the results in the context of augmentative biological control, with the view to understanding how to increase parasitoid performance after they are released.  相似文献

Encarsia transvena is an 'autoparasitoid' in the hymenopteran family Aphelinidae. In this species, female eggs are laid in whitefly nymphs. Male eggs are laid externally on immature parasitoids enclosed within the whitefly integument, either their own species, or other primary parasitoids. We explored parasitism by E. transvena of conspecific female immatures and those of a native primary parasitoid, Eretmocerus eremicus, in laboratory experiments. In the first experiment, female E. transvena were offered different combinations of two stages of E. transvena (late larvae – prepupae (ET2), and early pupae (ET3)), and one stage of E. eremicus (prepupae – early pupae (EE2)) in paired choice tests. The results indicated very little parasitism of ET3 relative to the host it was paired with, either EE2 or ET2. However, when EE2 was offered with ET2, there was no statistically significant difference in parasitism. In a no-choice experiment in which oviposition patterns and male progeny development were examined in four stages of both species of wasp, clear differences were observed between the host species. Only one stage of E. transvena (ET2) was parasitized and supported development of male E. transvena to any significant degree. In contrast, in E. eremicus, EE2, EE3 (red-eyed pupae), and EE4 (late pupae) were all parasitized, and male E. transvena emerged from all three stages, although fewer males emerged from EE4. In both species, wasp larvae that were still enclosed within the wet whitefly remains (ET1 and EE1) were parasitized at a very low rate. Lastly, an experiment that determined the length of the later developmental stages of E. transvena and E. eremicus suggested that the duration of the period in which E. transvena is susceptible to parasitism by conspecific females is less than half the period of susceptibility of E. eremicus. These results taken together suggest the potential for interference of E. eremicus by E. transvena, but other factors not examined here may also influence the outcome of interactions in the field.  相似文献

Life history variation can be genetically based, or it may be due to environmental effects on the phenotype. In this paper we examine life history variation in relation to differences in habitat in the parasitoid Asobara tabida. Differences in the spatial distribution of host patches, the length of the season, host suitability, and competition between parasitoids all contribute to the selection for differences in life history between strains from northern and southern Europe. Strains were compared with respect to the allocation between reproduction and survival in experimental environments that varied with regard to the availability of food or to the number of hosts offered per day. Upon emergence parasitoids originating from southern Europe have higher egg loads and smaller fat reserves than parasitoids originating from northern Europe. Parasitoids from both southern and northern Europe show plasticity in allocation: food shortage causes a decrease in egg production, and rich breeding opportunities an increase in egg production. This plasticity is greater in the northern strain. Fat reserves play a central role in the physiology of this allocation. Fat can be used for both reproduction and survival. There is no oosorption, so once fat is allocated to reproduction it can no longer be used for survival. Differences in plasticity in allocation can therefore be considered as differences in the timing of egg production.  相似文献

Sperm-egg interaction was investigated in mouse eggs freed from the zona pellucida and injected with Clostridium difficile toxin B, the inhibitor of Rho family small G proteins. Toxin B reduced in a dose-dependent manner the percentage of eggs associated with sperm fusion on the surface or sperm nucleus decondensation in the ooplasm, examined by injection of a DNA-staining dye into the egg and transfer of the dye to the fused sperm head after recording intracellular Ca(2+) responses for 100 min postinsemination. The mean number of decondensed sperm nuclei per egg was remarkably decreased by approximately 1 microg/ml toxin B in the ooplasm. This was because spermatozoa were arrested at the fusion state without developing to sperm incorporation and tended to lose cytoplasmic continuity to the egg. The fusion-arrested spermatozoa caused transient small Ca(2+) oscillations in most of eggs, while an injected spermatozoon produced repetitive large Ca(2+) spikes unaffected by toxin B. A decrease in the rate of fused spermatozoa and decondensed sperm nuclei was also caused by 20-40 microM cytochalasin D, the inhibitor of actin polymerization. Immunostaining of Rho proteins showed that Rac1 and RhoB are present in the cortical ooplasm, but Cdc42 is absent. Actin filaments in the cortex appeared to be reduced in toxin B-injected eggs. This study suggests that Rho protein(s) regulating actin-based cytoskeletal reorganization is involved in the process leading to sperm incorporation.  相似文献

Outbreaks of locust plagues result from the long-term accumulation of high-density egg production. The migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, displays dramatic differences in the egg-laid number with dependence on population density, while solitarious locusts lay more eggs compared to gregarious ones. However, the regulatory mechanism for the egg-laid number difference is unclear. Herein, we confirm that oosorption plays a crucial role in the regulation of egg number through the comparison of physiological and molecular biological profiles in gregarious and solitarious locusts. We find that gregarious oocytes display a 15% higher oosorption ratio than solitarious ones. Activinβ (Actβ) is the most highly upregulated gene in the gregarious terminal oocyte (GTO) compared to solitarious terminal oocyte (STO). Meanwhile, Actβ increases sharply from the normal oocyte (N) to resorption body 1 (RB1) stage during oosorption. The knockdown of Actβ significantly reduces the oosorption ratio by 13% in gregarious locusts, resulting in an increase in the egg-laid number. Based on bioinformatic prediction and experimental verification, microRNA-34 with three isoforms can target Actβ. The microRNAs display higher expression levels in STO than those in GTO and contrasting expression patterns of Actβ from the N to RB1 transition. Overexpression of each miR-34 isoform leads to decreased Actβ levels and significantly reduces the oosorption ratio in gregarious locusts. In contrast, inhibition of the miR-34 isoforms results in increased Actβ levels and eventually elevates the oosorption ratio of solitarious locusts. Our study reports an undescribed mechanism of oosorption through miRNA targeting of a TGFβ ligand and provides new insights into the mechanism of density-dependent reproductive adaption in insects.  相似文献

To clarify the role of Juvenile hormone (JH) in the induction of oosorption in females of the stink bug Plautia stali Scott (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), the effects of extirpation and implantation of the corpus cardiac‐corpus allatum complex (CC‐CA) are examined in fed and starved adults, respectively. Removal of CC‐CA induces oosorption in fed females, whereas CC‐CA implantation stimulates ovary development in starved females. Transection of the nervous connections between the brain and CC‐CA also exerts a stimulatory effect on ovary development. Uptake of yolk protein by the oocytes, assessed in terms of incorporation of a fluorescence dye, occurs on the day after food deprivation but ceases within 1 day after allatectomy. When females are deprived of food, beginning on day 3 of adult life, and treated with JH III skipped bisepoxide (JHSB3) on the same day, their ovaries develop in a dose‐dependent fashion. Approximately half of the starved females that received JHSB3 application on day 5 undergo oosorption in the terminal oocytes. This indicates that the critical starvation period for oosorption induction is approximately 2 days, and the earlier half of this period may reflect the time required for the brain to detect poor nutritional condition. During the latter half, in response to food deprivation, the brain inhibits JH biosynthesis by the corpus allatum through nervous connections, resulting in a low JH titre, which in turn induces oosorption.  相似文献

The fertilized eggs of Tetrodontophora bielanensis start to cleave 6 to 8 days after oviposition and initially only karyokineses occur. The cytokinesis begins after two karyokineses, when four nuclei are observed in the ooplasm. Two cleavage furrows, perpendicular to each other, appear simultaneously at the egg poles where polar bodies are located and gradually the furrows encompass the whole egg diameter. The furrow formation is initiated by the bundle of microfilaments that contract and pull superficial fragments of the oolemma into the yolk and subsequently new membranes, separating the daughter cells, start to form. However, they do not grow towards the egg centre but bifurcate, leaving the central part of the ooplasm outside of the newly formed blastomeres. Starting from the fourth or fifth cleavage division, the bifurcations permanently occur and multiple cleavage furrows are formed on the embryo surface. Moreover, fragments of the ooplasm, enclosed within the cell membrane but devoid of cell nucleus are observed. During further development such cell fragments become reincorporated into the embryo. This mode of cleavage leads eventually to the formation of cellular blastoderm on the embryo surface. The results presented in the paper suggest that the control of cleavage in T. bielanensis acts not at the level of cytoplasmic determinants but rather at the level of positional information of blastomeres.  相似文献

1. The relationships between parasitoid egg load, size, and age (3–72 h) for Trichogramma minutum, T. platneri, and T. pretiosum, reared from two factitious hosts, Ephestia kuehniella and Sitotroga cerealella, were evaluated to test the hypothesis that 24‐h egg load can be used to estimate the fecundity of Trichogramma parasitoids. 2. Egg load increased in relation to female age over the first 3 days of adult life for all three Trichogramma species to a mean egg storage capacity of 46.7 eggs for T. minutum, 41.1 for T. pretiosum, and 35.7 for T. platneri. At 24 h of age, T. minutum had matured enough eggs to fill 67% of its storage capacity, in comparison with 74% for T. pretiosum and 91% for T. platneri. There was a positive relationship between egg load and parasitoid size for all ages of the three Trichogramma species reared from both hosts (with the exception of T. platneri at 3 h post emergence), accounting for 14–69% of the variance in egg load. 3. The potential fecundity, realised (3 day cumulative) fecundity, and oviposition rate (potential fecundity/longevity) of T. platneri were all related linearly to size‐dependent variation in 24‐h egg load, but only the realised fecundity of T. pretiosum, and none of the reproductive characteristics of T. minutum. It is suggested that 24‐h egg load may not be an accurate measure of egg storage capacity in parasitoids and should be used cautiously to represent fecundity. 4. The potential fecundity of seven Trichogramma species reared from E. kuehniella varied from 55 to 150, but neither potential fecundity nor oviposition rate was related significantly to egg load (represented by eggs laid during first 24 h). Selection to avoid egg depletion in the attack of gregarious hosts appears most likely to account for the variation in potential fecundity among Trichogramma species.  相似文献

Injections of cytochalasin D (CD) or DNase I under the surface of fertilized loach egg result in local disorganization of microfilamentous cortex (MC) as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. This effect correlates with the loss of the cortex ability to contract in vitro. The disorganization of MC in the vegetal hemisphere of the egg does not affect the ooplasm segregation or blastodisk cleavage. Injection under the animal pole suppresses blastodisk formation and results in the autonomous separation of ooplasm in the central part of the egg. The experiments suggest that (1) autonomous separation of ooplasm from the yolk granules can proceed in the central part of the egg without the participation of MC; (2) normal segregation of ooplasm at the animal pole requires that the structures of microfilaments in the animal hemisphere (but not in the vegetal one) be preserved.  相似文献

The giant panda skeletal muscle cells, uterus epithelial cells and mammary gland cells from an adult individual were cultured and used as nucleus donor for the construction of interspecies embryos by transferring them into enucleated rabbit eggs. All the three kinds of somatic cells were able to reprogram in rabbit ooplasm and support early embryo development, of which mammary gland cells were proven to be the best, followed by uterus epithelial cells and skeletal muscle cells. The experiments showed that direct injection of mammary gland cell into enucleated rabbit ooplasm, combined with in vivo development in ligated rabbit oviduct, achieved higher blastoeyst development than in vitro culture after the somatic cell was injected into the perivitelline space and fused with the enucleated egg by electrical stimulation. The chromosome analysis demonstrated that the genetic materials in reconstructed blastocyst cells were the same as that in panda somatic cells. In addition, giant panda mitochondrial DNA (  相似文献

Plasticity in reproductive physiology is one avenue by which environmental signals, such as poor quality food, can be coordinated with adaptive responses. Insects have the ability to resorb oocytes that are not oviposited. Oosorption is proposed to be an adaptive mechanism to optimize fitness in hostile environments, recouping resources that might otherwise be lost, and reinvesting them into future reproductive potential. We tested the hypothesis that oosorption is an evolved mechanism by which females can reallocate resources from current reproductive effort to survival and future reproduction, when conditions for reproduction are poor, by examining the reproductive physiology and life-history outcome under poor quality food in populations of the milkweed bug (Oncopeltus fasciatus) that have adapted to live on sunflower seed. Females fed a diet of pumpkin seeds, known to be a poor host food, had higher levels of ovarian apoptosis (oosorption), lower reproductive output, but no reduction in life span under poor nutrition, as predicted under the oosorption hypothesis. However, the schedule of reproduction was surprising given the "wait to reproduce" assumption of oosorption as early fecundity was unaffected.  相似文献

The data suggest that (i) the ability of ooplasm to dedifferentiate somatic cells is not speciesspecific; (ii) there is compatibility between intenpecies somatic nucleus and ooplasm during early development of the reconstructed egg.  相似文献

Previous studies suggest that a number of factors in relation to mating may reduce female longevity and stimulate egg production and oviposition. However, it is still not clear whether these factors act on these parameters independently or in a collective way. Here we carried out a series of experiments including mating trials and seminal fluid injection to determine the factors responsible for reducing female longevity and stimulating egg production and oviposition in relation to mating in the moth Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Results show that seminal fluid and sperm work collectively to allow females to achieve maximum realized fecundity (number of eggs laid) in E. kuehniella but these factors play different roles in the process and their actions are independent. Seminal fluid signals females to allocate resources to ova, resulting in shorter longevity and greater egg production while eupyrene (not apyrene) sperm in the spermatheca trigger females to lay maximum number of eggs. We suggest that the receptors for seminal fluid signal may be located in the female reproductive tract and haemolymph, and those for sperm signal may be in the spermatheca. Hypotheses that females prolong their longevity by oosorption, physical injuries by males reduce female longevity, and mechanical stimulation by males triggers oviposition, are not substantiated in the present study.  相似文献

Summary In egg vesicles ofGalleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) electron microprobe analysis reveals calcium in concentrations of 9 and 3 mmoles per 1,000 g tissue wet weight in oocytes and accompanying trophic cells, respectively. This high average level of calcium characterizes both pre- and postvitellogenic oocytes, but the distribution of calcium is not uniform. In postvitellogenic vesicles the central area of the ooplasm shows a higher content of Ca than peripheral one, what may be correlated with the distribution of mature yolk platelets within the ooplasm.  相似文献

Anaphes iole Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is a solitary egg parasitoid of Lygus bugs (Heteroptera: Miridae) in North America. This research considered factors that might impact the egg load of lab-cultured A .iole females, reared from Lygus hesperus Knight egg patches. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) egg load was related to body size and not affected by female age, and (2) egg load depletion was not affected by mate presence and time (in days) that females were exposed to host patches. Initial egg load averaged 48 mature eggs and no immature eggs were detected in the ovarioles of dissected females. Egg load was neither related to body size (hind tibia or forewing length) nor affected significantly by age (0, 1 or 2days old honey-fed females). Mate presence (females with or without males) and exposure time (1, 3 or 5days on the same host patch) had no effect on egg load depletion. Females usually depleted most of their egg load within 24h. From 86 to 92% of females contained less than six mature eggs and no immature eggs after 1, 3 or 5days of exposure to host patches. The results of this study suggest that A. iole females are certainly pro-ovigenic and initial egg load does not correlate with body size or age. Since mated and unmated females deplete most of their egg load in 24h, time-efficient production of progeny may result when ovipositing parasitoids are exposed to suitable hosts for just a few days. The United States Government has the right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty-free license in and to any copyright of this article.
