Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) accounts for approximately 30% of malignant salivary gland tumors and approximately 30% occur in minor salivary glands. The palate is the most frequent localization for those arising in minor glands. A 33-year-old male patient with MEC of the hard palate was treated as an acute odontogenic infection, which was not cured after tooth endodontic treatments, repeated incisions and antibiotics. On the hard palate ovoid, a hard painless mass, which had not extended over the middle palatal line, was observed. Partial maxillectomy was performed. A review of the literature was performed in order to provide a coherent overview on the differential diagnosis of palatal lesions. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first report in English literature describing palatal MEC misdiagnosed and treated as odontogenic infection. Considering the extensive list of MEC's differential diagnoses on the hard palate, acute odontogenic infection can now be added to that list.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Odontogenic tumors are lesions that are derived from remnants of the components of the developing tooth germ. The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor or calcifying odontogenic cyst is a benign cystic neoplasm of odontogenic origin that is characterized by an ameloblastoma-like epithelium. Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor may be centrally or peripherally located, and its ghost cells may exhibit calcification, as first described by Gorlin in 1962. Most peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors are located in the anterior gingiva of the mandible or maxilla. CASE PRESENTATION: Authors report a rare case of a peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor of the maxillary gingiva. A 39-year-old male patient presented with a fibrous mass on the attached buccal gingiva of the upper left cuspid teeth. It was 0.7-cm-diameter, painless and it was clinically diagnosed as a peripheral ossifying fibroma. After an excisional biopsy, the diagnosis was peripheric calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor. The patient was monitored for five years following the excision, and no recurrence was detected. CONCLUSIONS: All biopsy material must be sent for histological examination. If the histological examination of gingival lesions with innocuous appearance is not performed, the frequency of peripheral calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor and other peripheral odontogenic tumors may be underestimated.  相似文献

The molecular mechanisms underlying the directional neuron-to-epithelial cell transport of herpesvirus particles during infection are poorly understood. To study the role of the viral glycoprotein D (gD) in the directional spread of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and pseudorabies virus (PRV) infection, a culture system consisting of sympathetic neurons or epithelial cells in different compartments was employed. We discovered that PRV infection could spread efficiently from neurons to cells and back to neurons in the absence of gD, the viral ligand required for entry of extracellular particles. Unexpectedly, PRV infection can also spread transneuronally via axo-axonal contacts. We show that this form of interaxonal spread between neurons is gD independent and is not mediated by extracellular virions. We also found that unlike PRV gD, HSV-1 gD is required for neuron-to-cell spread of infection. Neither of the host cell gD receptors (HVEM and nectin-1) is required in target primary fibroblasts for neuron-to-cell spread of HSV-1 or PRV infection.  相似文献

Summary Many crop plants carry VA mycorrhizal infection. The fungi benefit their host principally by increasing the rate of phosphorus uptake from soils low in available phosphorus.Infection of seedling root systems occurs from soil-borne propagules and/or from neighbouring mycorrhizal roots. When, under the right conditions, the propagules germinate, a mycelium is produced which cannot growth extensively until mycorrhizal infection is established. The level of initial (primary) infection is related to propagule density. The relation can be described by a mathematical model which takes account of propagule germination rates, rates of hyphal growth through the soil and rates of root growth.Subsequent spread of secondary infection is by growth, along and between roots, of hyphae originating from established infection units and by the formation of new infection units. This spread can be modelled. If certain simplifying assumptions are made, the effects on the host of developing mycorrhizal infection can also be modelled and satisfactory predictions of infection spread and the mycorrhizal growth response obtained. In conclusion, some implications for agriculture and forestry are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The spread of certain diseases can be promoted, in some cases substantially, by prior infection with another disease. One example is that of HIV, whose immunosuppressant effects significantly increase the chances of infection with other pathogens. Such coinfection processes, when combined with nontrivial structure in the contact networks over which diseases spread, can lead to complex patterns of epidemiological behavior. Here we consider a mathematical model of two diseases spreading through a single population, where infection with one disease is dependent on prior infection with the other. We solve exactly for the sizes of the outbreaks of both diseases in the limit of large population size, along with the complete phase diagram of the system. Among other things, we use our model to demonstrate how diseases can be controlled not only by reducing the rate of their spread, but also by reducing the spread of other infections upon which they depend.  相似文献

The distribution and spread of hop latent viroid (HLVd) in two adjacent plantings of the hop cultivars Omega and Wye Challenger have been studied for three seasons. The planting of cv. Omega was heavily infected at the start of the survey and spread was rapid; the density of infection was lower in the planting of cv. Wye Challenger and spread was much slower. It is not known whether the difference in rate of spread was a varietal effect or because of the higher density of infection in the Omega planting. The distribution of known infections in 1991 suggests that plant-to-adjacent-plant spread, either by contact or on tools, does occur. However, the overall distribution of infection and the occurrence of new infections not adjacent to existing ones, suggests that this is not the only means of transmission; whether a vector is involved is not known.  相似文献

Epidemiological investigations carried out at the foci of Campylobacter infection in Moscow and the Moscow region in 1987-1990 demonstrated that Campylobacter infection was recently registered as sporadic cases in a few foci. The alimentary route of the transmission of this infection was the main factor of its spread. A high role of everyday contacts in the spread of this infection was noted. The possibility for outbreaks and sporadic cases of Campylobacter infection to be masked by very frequently occurring associations of these bacteria is discussed.  相似文献

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are capable of both self-renewal and multilineage differentiation, which play a positive role in dentinogenesis. Studies have shown that tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is involved in the differentiation of DPSCs under pro-inflammatory stimuli, but the mechanism of action of TNF-α is unknown. Rip-like interacting caspase-like apoptosis-regulatory protein kinase (RICK) is a biomarker of an early inflammatory response that plays a key role in modulating cell differentiation, but the role of RICK in DPSCs is still unclear. In this study, we identified that RICK regulates TNF-α-mediated odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs via the ERK signaling pathway. The expression of the biomarkers of odontogenic differentiation dental matrix protein-1 (DMP-1), dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), biomarkers of odontogenic differentiation, increased in low concentration (1–10 ng/ml) of TNF-α and decreased in high concentration (50–100 ng/ml). Odontogenic differentiation increased over time in the odontogenic differentiation medium. In the presence of 10 ng/L TNF-α, the expression of RICK increased gradually over time, along with odontogenic differentiation. Genetic silencing of RICK expression reduced the expression of odontogenic markers DMP-1 and DSPP. The ERK, but not the NF-κB signaling pathway, was activated during the odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs. ERK signaling modulators decreased when RICK expression was inhibited. PD98059, an ERK inhibitor, blocked the odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs induced by TNF-α. These results provide a further theoretical and experimental basis for the potential use of RICK in targeted therapy for dentin regeneration.  相似文献

Little is known about which cell types act as the origin of odontogenic stem cells and how these stem cells differentiate to become functional. In the present study 3-day-old guinea-pigs were injected with tritiated thymidine, killed at intervals and their molars studied. The odontogenic cells were found to originate from the stem cells which by autoradiography were shown to be slow cycling and lightly labelled. As they differentiated they became heavily labelled and were designated transit 'dividing cells'. With further differentiation the cells were unlabelled and were designated 'simple transit cells'. It was concluded from the present study that outer enamel epithelium functioned as the source of all odontogenic epithelium; that primitive mesenchyme around the cervical loop functioned as the source of all odontogenic mesenchyme and that all of the transit cells which differentiated to become functional migrated coronally.  相似文献

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) glycoprotein E (gE) is a type I viral membrane protein that facilitates the anterograde spread of viral infection from the peripheral nervous system to the brain. In animal models, a gE-null mutant infection spreads inefficiently from presynaptic neurons to postsynaptic neurons (anterograde spread of infection). However, the retrograde spread of infection from post- to presynaptic neurons remains unaffected. Here we show that gE is required for wild-type localization of viral structural proteins in axons of infected neurons. During a gE-null PRV infection, a subset of viral glycoproteins, capsids, and tegument proteins enter and localize to the axon inefficiently. This defect is most obvious in the distal axon and growth cones. However, axonal entry and localization of other viral membrane proteins and endogenous cellular proteins remains unaffected. Neurons infected with gE-null mutants produce wild-type levels of viral structural proteins and infectious virions in the cell body. Our results indicate that reduced axonal targeting of viral structural proteins is a compelling explanation for the lack of anterograde spread in neural circuits following infection by a gE-null mutant.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT), or Pindborg's tumor, is a rare, benign, odontogenic neoplasm first described by Pindborg in 1955. It is most commonly seen in the fourth and fifth decades of life, usually arises in the mandibular premolar-molar areas and accounts for approximately 1% of all intraosseous odontogenic tumors. This report describes the cytologic findings in a case of CEOT. CASE: A 62-year-old woman was referred to the ear, nose and throat clinic with a right maxillary mass. The fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears showed numerous calcifications; amorphous, eosinophilic material; and clusters of round epithelial cells embedded in a bloody background. The smears were diagnosed as suspicious for malignancy. Maxillectomy was done. The histologic sections were diagnosed as CEOT. CONCLUSION: FNA findings of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor have been described rarely. The clusters of epithelial cells with prominent nucleoli are mistaken for features of a malignant tumor.  相似文献

The dynamics of the spread of HIV infection in Russia and the CIS countries is presented. The relationship between the spread of HIV infection and an increase in the number of injection drug users is substantiated. The factors inhibiting the spread of the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Russia and the CIS countries are analyzed with due regard to the world experience. Attention is paid to the development of the epidemic situation in HIV infection due to, similarly to Russia and to more than 100 countries of the world, drug addiction. The effectiveness of the activity of the Russian health service organs in controlling this epidemic is emphasized. The prospects of prophylactic measures for controlling HIV infection in Russia and the CIS countries are determined.  相似文献

Naturally occurring transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle are probably transmitted by oral or other peripheral routes of infection. While prion protein (PrP) is required for susceptibility, the mechanism of spread of infection to the brain is not clear. Two prominent possibilities include hematogenous spread by leukocytes and neural spread by axonal transport. In the present experiments, following oral or intraperitoneal infection of transgenic mice with hamster scrapie strain 263K, hamster PrP expression in peripheral nerves was sufficient for successful infection of the brain, and cells of the spleen were not required either as a site of amplification or as transporters of infectivity. The role of tissue-specific PrP expression of foreign PrP in interference with scrapie infection was also studied in these transgenic mice. Peripheral expression of heterologous PrP completely protected the majority of mice from clinical disease after oral or intraperitoneal scrapie infection. Such extensive protection has not been seen in earlier studies on interference, and these results suggested that gene therapy with mutant PrP may be effective in preventing TSE diseases.  相似文献

The authors present two cases of calcifying odontogenic cysts, which were confirmed by histological examination. In the first case the radiographic findings and clinical status did not indicate the presence of a calcifying odontogenic cyst. In the second case, differential diagnosis included COC. The histopathological findings showed that what appeared to be simple cases of bone translucencies was in fact an unusual odontogenic lesion. The two cases point out the possibility of incorrect assessment of deceptively banal cases in daily specialist practice.  相似文献

The cortical actin cytoskeleton beneath the plasma membrane represents a physical barrier that vaccinia virus has to overcome during its exit from an infected cell. Previous observations using overexpression and pharmacological approaches suggest that vaccinia enhances its release by modulating the cortical actin cytoskeleton by inhibiting RhoA signalling using the viral protein F11. We have now examined the role of F11 and its ability to interact with RhoA to inhibit its downstream signalling in the spread of vaccinia infection both in vitro and in vivo. Live cell imaging over 48 hours reveals that loss of F11 or its ability to bind RhoA dramatically reduces the rate of cell-to-cell spread of the virus in a cell monolayer. Cells infected with the ΔF11L virus also maintained their cell-to-cell contacts, and did not undergo virus-induced motility as observed during wild-type infections. The ΔF11L virus is also attenuated in intranasal mouse models of infection, as it is impaired in its ability to spread from the initial sites of infection to the lungs and spleen. Loss of the ability of F11 to bind RhoA also reduces viral spread in vivo. Our results clearly establish that viral-mediated inibition of RhoA signalling can enhance the spread of infection not only in cell monolayers, but also in vivo.  相似文献

Spread of soil-borne fungal plant pathogens is mainly driven by the amount of resources the pathogen is able to capture and exploit should it behave either as a saprotroph or a parasite. Despite their importance in understanding the fungal spread in agricultural ecosystems, experimental data related to exploitation of infected host plants by the pathogen remain scarce. Using Rhizoctonia solani / Raphanus sativus as a model pathosystem, we have obtained evidence on the link between ontogenic resistance of a tuberizing host and (i) its susceptibility to the pathogen and (ii) after infection, the ability of the fungus to spread in soil. Based on a highly replicable experimental system, we first show that infection success strongly depends on the host phenological stage. The nature of the disease symptoms abruptly changes depending on whether infection occurred before or after host tuberization, switching from damping-off to necrosis respectively. Our investigations also demonstrate that fungal spread in soil still depends on the host phenological stage at the moment of infection. High, medium, or low spread occurred when infection was respectively before, during, or after the tuberization process. Implications for crop protection are discussed.  相似文献

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox and shingles. While varicella is likely spread as cell-free virus to susceptible hosts, the virus is transmitted by cell-to-cell spread in the body and in vitro. Since VZV glycoprotein E (gE) is essential for virus infection, we postulated that gE binds to a cellular receptor. We found that insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) interacts with gE through its extracellular domain. Downregulation of IDE by siRNA, or blocking of IDE with antibody, with soluble IDE protein extracted from liver, or with bacitracin inhibited VZV infection. Cell-to-cell spread of virus was also impaired by blocking IDE. Transfection of cell lines impaired for VZV infection with a plasmid expressing human IDE resulted in increased entry and enhanced infection with cell-free and cell-associated virus. These studies indicate that IDE is a cellular receptor for both cell-free and cell-associated VZV.  相似文献

Dental papilla cells (DPCs) belong to precursor cells differentiating to odontoblasts and play an important role in dentin formation and reproduction. This study aimed to explore the changes and and involvement of mitochondrial respiratory function during odontogenic differentiation. Primary DPCs were obtained from first molar dental papilla of neonatal rats and cultured in odontogenic medium for 7, 14, 21 days. DPCs, which expressed mesenchymal surface markers CD29, CD44 and CD90, had the capacity for self-renewal and multipotent differentiation. Odontoblastic induction increased mineralized matrix formation in a time-dependent manner, which was accompanied by elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP), dentin sialophosphoprotein and dentin matrix protein 1 expression at mRNA and protein levels. Notably, odontogenic medium led to an increase in adenosine-5′-triphosphate content and mitochondrial membrane potential, whereas a decrease in intercellular reactive oxygen species production and NAD+/NADH ratio. Furthermore, odontogenic differentiation was significantly suppressed by treatment with rotenone, an inhibitor of mitochondrial respiratory chain. These results demonstrate that enhanced mitochondrial function is crucial for odontogenic differentiation of DPCs.  相似文献
