Asian shore crabs (Hemigrapsus sanguineus De Haan) are a dominant invasive species in the northwest Atlantic, where recent evidence suggests that they have been introduced multiple times from their native range of Japan and Korea. Despite favorable environmental conditions and a high level of shipping traffic across the Pacific, this crab has not become established in the northeast Pacific. This may be due to interactions with the native shore crab assemblage, which previous studies have found to outcompete juvenile H. sanguineus for shelter. The present study used a combination of feeding and behavioral experiments to quantify the feeding behavior of native crabs (Pachygrapsus crassipes, Hemigrapsus nudus, Hemigrapsus oregonensis) with and without the presence of H. sanguineus. H. sanguineus ate more than the native crabs combined at both 7 and 13 °C. Crabs in the mixed treatment which included all four species ate less than expected, indicating that at least one species reduced its feeding rate. However, time-lapse photography revealed similar amounts of time feeding in both treatments for all 4 species, suggesting that there were changes in feeding intensity when all crabs were together. The high feeding rates but lack of a competitive advantage for H. sanguineus make it an unlikely but potentially impactful invader in the northeast Pacific.  相似文献

Biochemical genetics was applied to elucidate the taxonomic position of the spider crab Pisoides bidentatus. Two morphologically similar spider crabs, P. bidentatus and Pugettia quadridens, were compared with four sympatric brachyuran species, Eriocheir japonicus, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, Hemigrapsus penicillatus (Varunidae), and Cancer amphioetus (Cancridae), using 20 allozyme loci. High genetic identity-value between P. bidentatus and P. quadridens (I = 0.758 ± 0.092) suggests that they should evidently be placed to one genus. This conclusion is supported by the similar identity-value between two species of the genus Hemigrapsus (I = 0.821 ± 0.078) and the low genetic similarity (I = 0.125 ± 0.05) between different genera, Hemigrapsus and Eriocheir, within the family Varunidae.  相似文献

In Vostok Bay (Sea of Japan), the parasitic rhizocephalan barnacle Polyascus polygenea (Cirripedia: Sacculinidae) was found for the first time on a coastal crab Hemigrapsus longitarsis (Decapoda: Grapsidae). P. polygenea is a common parasite of H. sanguineus, a species very close to H. longitarsis in taxonomic position and biology.  相似文献

Based on morphological evidence and preliminary physicochemical data, we report the first picornavirus from crustacean hosts. The viral particles are widespread in the tissues of an isopodan parasitic castrator, Portunion conformis, and its shore crab host, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, collected in San Francisco Bay, California. Less frequently, infected cells of the parasitic isopod also contain larger viral particles.  相似文献

The topography and dynamics of the activity of the enzymes of the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the brain of the shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus after 1, 6, and 12 h of anoxia was studied histochemically and immunocytochemically. Changes in the activity and number of NO- and CBS-immune-positive cells that take place due to anoxia and the intensity of which depends on the duration of the influence were revealed. The fact that the balance between the nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide systems in the brain of the crabs H. sanguineus is preserved indicates the joint participation of those systems in the central regulation of adaptive mechanisms under the influence of anoxia and, apparently, plays an important role in the adaptation of these hydrobionts to oxygen deficit.  相似文献

The Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, is one of the most abundant invasive crabs along the east coast of the United States. Larval stages are generally planktonic, but the megalopa stage settles to the substratum near the time of metamorphosis. Reducing the time to metamorphosis may result in higher recruitment and survival. Previous work has shown that a water-soluble cue produced by adult H. sanguineus can induce metamorphosis of conspecific megalopae. Here we report the results of experiments in which megalopae were exposed to cues produced by different life stages of H. sanguineus. We also provide data from experiments that investigated the temporal stability, detection threshold, and chemical classification of the cue. Our results indicate that an active cue is produced by juveniles as well as adults. The cue is proteinaceous and begins to degrade within 2 days of production. The threshold for detection of the cue by megalopae lies between 0.1 and 0.01 µg of protein per ml.  相似文献

The phospholipid composition of organs and tissues was investigated in representatives of five phyla of marine invertebrates: Annelida (Chaetopterus variopedatus, Serpula vermicularis), Echiuroidea (Urechis unicinctus), Sipunculoidea (Phascolosoma japonicum), Mollusca (Gastropoda: Tectonatica janthostoma, Neptunea polycostata; Bivalvia: Mactra sulcataria, Peronidia venuloza, Patinopecten yessoensis, Crenomytilus grayanus; Cephalopoda: Octopus conispadiceus, Todarodes pacificus), and Arthropoda (Paralythodes camtschatica, Erimacrus isenbekii, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, Pinixa rathbunii). The specificity of phospholipid distribution was shown to be related to the taxonomic position of marine invertebrates and functional properties of their organs and tissues. In Echiuroidea, Sipunculoidea, and Arthropoda, ceramide aminoethylphosphonate was found only in the digestive organs. This suggests an exogenous origin of this phospholipid.  相似文献

Profilicollis chasmagnathi Holcman-Spector, Mañé-Garzón & Dei-Cas, 1977 (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) has been reported to parasitise different grapsid species as intermediate hosts along the South Atlantic shores, i.e. Cyrtograpsus angulatus (Dana) and Neohelice granulata (Dana) in Uruguay and Cyrtograpsus altimanus (Rathbun) in Argentina. Larvae of a similar acanthocephalan described as Profilicollis antarcticus Zdzitowiecki, 1985 were recorded in the crab Hemigrapsus crenulatus (Milne-Edwards) from an estuarine habitat on the Southeast Pacific shore in Chile. Earlier studies have questioned the specific assignation of the Chilean estuarine populations of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931. The aim of this study was to re-examine the identification of these acanthocephalans by means of morphological and molecular analyses of cystacanths of Profilicollis spp. gathered from C. angulatus, N. granulata, C. altimanus and H. crenulatus. Our analyses showed that a single species of Profilicollis, P. chasmagnathi, parasitises these four crab species. The assessment of specimens from the South Shetlands Islands, the type-locality of P. antarcticus, is needed before formally proposing that P. antarcticus is a junior subjective synonym of P. chasmagnathi.  相似文献

Inducible defenses are important in the life strategies of many taxa. In some species of marine gastropods, water-borne chemical cues from potential predators induce defensive changes in shell form and differences in growth rate. We examined such phenotypic plasticity in the direct-developing snail, Littorina subrotundata (Carpenter, 1864). Among experimental field populations of L. subrotundata exposed to differing intensities of predation by the purple shore crab, Hemigrapsus nudus (Dana, 1851), snails collected from predation-intense environments often had more massive shells than closely related snails from adjacent environments where predation was negligible. Snails collected from both environments were raised in tanks containing cages of H. nudus that were feeding on conspecific snails and compared to a control group raised in the absence of this stimulus. Most snails developed significantly more massive shells in the presence of the crabs suggesting that adaptive phenotypic plasticity may account for some of the variation we observed in the field. In one case, snails from a predation-intense environment did not exhibit a statistically significant amount of plasticity, but instead grew a more massive shell irrespective of the laboratory stimulus. We interpret this as evidence for a genetic difference in the plasticity of shell form among experimental populations, caused by intense selection by H. nudus. There was no statistical difference in the growth rates of snails among treatments.  相似文献

Interactions between anthropogenic disturbances and introduced and native species can shift ecological communities, potentially leading to the successful establishment of additional invaders. Since its discovery in New Jersey in 1988, the Asian shore crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) has continued to expand its range, invading estuarine and coastal habitats in eastern North America. In estuarine environments, H. sanguineus occupies similar habitats to native, panopeid mud crabs. These crabs, and a variety of fouling organisms (both NIS and native), often inhabit man-made substrates (like piers and riprap) and anthropogenic debris. In a series of in situ experiments at a closed dock in southwestern Long Island (New York, USA), we documented the impacts of these native and introduced crabs on hard-substrate fouling communities. We found that while the presence of native mud crabs did not significantly influence the succession of fouling communities compared to caged and uncaged controls, the presence of introduced H. sanguineus reduced the biomass of native tunicates (particularly Molgula manhattensis), relative to caged controls. Moreover, the presence of H. sanguineus favored fouling communities dominated by introduced tunicates (especially Botrylloides violaceous and Diplosoma listerianum). Altogether, our results suggest that H. sanguineus could help facilitate introduced fouling tunicates in the region, particularly in locations where additional solid substrates have created novel habitats.  相似文献

Populations of invading Asian shore crabs (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) and resident crabs (European green crab Carcinus maenas or species in the family Panopeidae) were monitored for up to 12 years along a south to north orientation on the open coast of Massachusetts and within the Narragansett Bay estuary, Rhode Island. At all sites, densities of resident crabs declined as H. sanguineus increased in abundance. Population dynamics were divided into 3 stages of the invasion (early, mid, late) based on statistically different densities of invading and resident crabs. Early in the invasion on the open coast, the relatively few H. sanguineus present had a wide range of individual sizes. By late in the invasion, relatively small crabs [<10 mm carapace width (CW)] constituted half of the population. Few seasonal differences occurred. Carcinus maenas, dominant at the coastal sites early in the invasion, showed strong recruitment of small individuals in the fall early in the invasion. Overall numbers of C. maenas declined as the H. sanguineus invasion progressed, and very few crabs >10 mm CW were present late in the invasion. In Narragansett Bay, a recruitment peak of H. sanguineus occurred shortly before it surged in population size, and large crabs were abundant late in the invasion. Geographic comparisons of H. sanguineus populations in southern New England showed similar growth trajectories. Monitoring populations of resident and invading species at multiple locations from early invasion through clear establishment of the invader allows a more complete understanding of the population dynamics of marine species invasions.  相似文献

The larval development of three crabs of the Varunidae family, (Hemigrapsus sanguineus, H. penicillatus, and H. longitarsis), widely spread in Russian waters of the Sea of Japan, were studied under laboratory conditions. At a temperature of 20–22°C and a salinity of 32‰ about 30% of larvae a complete developmental cycle, including five zoeal stages and megalopa, took from 22 to 30 days. All larval stages are illustrated and described in detail. Zoea I and zoea II of the studied crabs are not distinguishable. Zoea III–V of these species differ in the number of dorsomedial setae on the abdominal somite I and in the number of setae on the posterodorsal arch. The megalopae of three Hemigrapsus species possess a different number of segments, aesthetascs and setae on the antennular exopod. In spite of the great similarity of larvae of genera Hemigrapsus and Eriocheir, the latter possesses a number of distinctive features in all developmental stages, supporting the separation of these genera.  相似文献

Hemigrapsus sanguineus, the Asian shore crab, has rapidly replaced Carcinus maenas, the green crab, as the most abundant crab on rocky shores in the northwest Atlantic since its introduction to the United States (USA) in 1988. The northern edge of this progressing invasion is the Gulf of Maine, where Asian shore crabs are only abundant in the south. We compared H. sanguineus population densities to those from published 2005 surveys and quantified genetic variation using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. We found that the range of H. sanguineus had extended northward since 2005, that population density had increased substantially (at least 10-fold at all sites), and that Asian shore crabs had become the dominant intertidal crab species in New Hampshire and southern Maine. Despite the significant increase in population density of H. sanguineus, populations only increased by a factor of 14 in Maine compared to 70 in southern New England, possibly due to cooler temperatures in the Gulf of Maine. Genetically, populations were predominantly composed of a single haplotype of Japanese, Korean, or Taiwanese origin, although an additional seven haplotypes were found. Six of these haplotypes were of Asian origin, while two are newly described. Large increases in population sizes of genetically diverse individuals in Maine will likely have a large ecological impact, causing a reduction in populations of mussels, barnacles, snails, and other crabs, similar to what has occurred at southern sites with large populations of this invasive crab species.  相似文献

Summary Isolated flexor muscles of the shore crab,Hemigrapsus edwardsi were maintained in saline solutions for periods of 2–12 h.In hypotonic saline solutions containing less than 400 mM sodium chloride, the fibres rapidly died. In 400 mM sodium chloride saline the fibres showed partial volume readjustment associated with reduction in the amount of intracellular ninhydrin-positive substances (NPS).In saline (460 mM sodium chloride) containing ouabain (2–5 mM) the fibres lost water and potassium, gained sodium and chloride, but the amount of NPS was not significantly changed. In hypertonic saline (550 mM sodium chloride) the fibres showed a partial recovery of volume during the 8 h experimental period. Associated with this was a rise in the amount of intracellular NPS.It was concluded that the ability of the muscle fibres ofHemigrapsus edwardsi to respond to a hyperosmotic challenge in an amino acid free medium, by an increase in intracellular amino acid levels, must represent a synthesis of these compounds from an intracellular source. This may be an adaptive feature of osmotic readjustment in this rather permeable crab.  相似文献

The Asian brush-clawed shore crab Hemigrapsus takanoi is a non-indigenous species along the Northern European coast. Although the history of range expansion of European H. takanoi has been well-documented, little is known about the genetic compositions of either the introduced European populations or the native Asian ones. We therefore collected H. takanoi broadly from their native Asian sites and introduced European ranges, and genotyped them by sequencing the mitochondrial 16S RNA gene and by analyzing nuclear microsatellite loci. Our results revealed that the H. takanoi Bay of Seine (France) populations consisted of a genetic admixture between populations in Japan and those in the Yellow Sea region. These French populations should be carefully monitored in the future, since the genetic admixture of multiple source populations may accelerate range expansion in non-indigenous organisms. Our results also suggested that shipping lines from East Asia were more probable vectors than historical juvenile oyster transportations from Japan for the foundation of present European H. takanoi populations. Interestingly, gene flow between populations in Japan and those in the Yellow Sea region (i.e., domestic invasion) was not observed despite the higher potential for artificial translocations via shipping lines in the native Asian range compared with those from Asia to Europe. The lack of domestic invasions implied that intra-specific priority effects of the resident H. takanoi populations played an important role in preventing the successful colonization of artificially-transferred individuals.  相似文献

Hemigrapsus sanguineus is an invasive species of crab (family: Grapsidae) in the north Atlantic basin. The species has spread rapidly since it was first discovered in North America in the late 1980s; however, the mechanisms of this range expansion remain unclear. This study attempts to predict the vertical distribution and, thus, ultimate transport of H. sanguineus larvae by examining larval responses to gravity and pressure. Geotaxis was determined by measuring the response of individual larvae to gravity in the absence of other tactic stimuli. Barokinesis was determined by measuring changes in swimming speed of larvae upon step-wise changes in pressure. Geotactic response of the larvae changes ontogenetically; early stage larvae are negatively geotactic (orienting towards the surface), while late stage larvae are positively geotactic (orienting towards the bottom). Larvae show a response to pressure that would aid in depth regulation. Early-stage larvae increase activity upon a change in pressure and orient their movement to gravity. However, the larvae show a relatively low sensitivity to pressure change. The evidence predicts an export-and-return model of larval transport, similar to that of Uca spp. in the Middle Atlantic Bight. This model supports the hypothesis that H. sanguineus larvae have the potential for high dispersal and will continue to invade new regions through larval transport.  相似文献

It is now widely accepted that a shift towards renewable energy production is needed in order to avoid further anthropogenically induced climate change. The ocean provides a largely untapped source of renewable energy. As a result, harvesting electrical power from the wind and tides has sparked immense government and commercial interest but with relatively little detailed understanding of the potential environmental impacts. This study investigated how the sound emitted from an underwater tidal turbine and an offshore wind turbine would influence the settlement and metamorphosis of the pelagic larvae of estuarine brachyuran crabs which are ubiquitous in most coastal habitats. In a laboratory experiment the median time to metamorphosis (TTM) for the megalopae of the crabs Austrohelice crassa and Hemigrapsus crenulatus was significantly increased by at least 18 h when exposed to either tidal turbine or sea-based wind turbine sound, compared to silent control treatments. Contrastingly, when either species were subjected to natural habitat sound, observed median TTM decreased by approximately 21–31% compared to silent control treatments, 38–47% compared to tidal turbine sound treatments, and 46–60% compared to wind turbine sound treatments. A lack of difference in median TTM in A. crassa between two different source levels of tidal turbine sound suggests the frequency composition of turbine sound is more relevant in explaining such responses rather than sound intensity. These results show that estuarine mudflat sound mediates natural metamorphosis behaviour in two common species of estuarine crabs, and that exposure to continuous turbine sound interferes with this natural process. These results raise concerns about the potential ecological impacts of sound generated by renewable energy generation systems placed in the nearshore environment.  相似文献

Approximately 1,000 volunteers assessed the presence of invasive (Carcinus maenas and Hemigrapsus sanguineus) and native crabs within the intertidal zone of seven coastal states of the US, from New Jersey to Maine. Identification of crab species and determination of the gender of the observed crabs was documented at all 52 sites across a 725-km coastal transect. Using quantitative measures of accuracy of data collected by citizen scientists, a significant predictor of a volunteer’s ability was determined and eligibility criteria were set. Students in grade three and seven had the ability to differentiate between species of crabs with over 80% and 95% accuracy, respectively. Determination of gender of the crabs was more challenging and accuracy exceeded 80% for seventh grade students, while 95% accuracy was found for students with at least 2 years of university education. We used the data collected by citizen scientists to create a large-scale standardized database of the distribution and abundance of the native and invasive crabs. Hemigrapsus sanguineus dominated the rocky intertidal zone from Sandy Hook, New Jersey to Boston Harbor, Massachusetts while C. maenas dominated the northern extent of the sampled coastline. A citizen scientist of this monitoring network detected a range expansion of H. sanguineus. We identified obstacles to creating a national monitoring network and proposed recommendations that addressed these issues.  相似文献

A crab previously unknown in the European fauna was discovered in La Rochelle (France) in 1994. This shore crab was identified as Hemigrapsus penicillatus, a North-West Pacific species. It appears to be spreading rapidly. It has now been detected from Laredo, Spain (43 °25′N, 03 °20′W) to Fromentine, France (46°53′N, 02°09′W) in sheltered areas of the mid-littoral zone. It is locally abundant, with a density of up to 10–20 individuals per square metre. In its native area, its distribution ranges from a cold (northern Japan, south of the Pacific coast of Russia) to a tropical (Taiwan, Hong-Kong) habitat. Being tolerant to both high and low temperatures (even at freezing point), it will probably colonize most of the European and North-African coasts within a short period of time.  相似文献
