Mosquito density, biting rate and cage size effects on repellent tests   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Mosquito biting rates and the mean duration of protection (in hours) from bites (MDPB) of Aedes aegypti and Anopheles quadrimaculatus , using the repellent 'deet' ( N , N -diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) on a 50 cm2 area of healthy human skin, were observed in small (27 l), medium (≈65 l) and large (125 l) cages containing low, medium or high densities of mosquitoes: respectively, 640, 128 or 49 cm3 of cage volume per female. At the initial treatment rate of ≈ 0.4 μl/cm2 (1 ml of 25% deet in ethanol on 650 cm2 of skin), the MDPB for deet against Ae. aegypti ranged from 4.5 to 6.5 h and was significantly less (5.0 ± 0.8 h) in large cages compared with medium (6.2 ± 0.9 h) and small (6.2 ± 0.8 h) cages, regardless of the density. Against An. quadrimaculatus the MDPB for deet 0.4 μl/cm2 was 1.5–8.0 h, less in small (3.7 ± 2.3 h) and large (2.2 ± 1.1 h) cages at medium (3.7 ± 2.3 h) and high (2.5 ± 1.7 h) mosquito densities, and was longest in medium cages (6.2 ± 2.6 h) at low mosquito densities (5.8 ± 2.8 h). With equinoxial photoperiodicity (light on 06.00–18.00 hours) the biting rate was influenced by the time of observation (08.00, 12.00, 16.00 hours) for Ae. aegypti but not for An. quadrimaculatus. For both species, the biting rate was inversely proportional to mosquito density and the MDPB. The shortest MDPBs were obtained in large cages with high densities of mosquitoes and longest protection times occurred in medium sized cages with low mosquito densities.  相似文献

The Cape golden mole, Chrysochloris asiatica is an insectivore which excavates superficial foraging burrows as it searches for its food. It has a mean (±S.D.) resting metabolic rate (RMR) when newly captured of 1–17±0.17 cm3 O2g-1 h-1 ( n = 14), within the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of 30–32°C.
The body temperature (Tb) of the mole in the TNZ is low 32.9 ± 0.36 ( n = 14) and remains stable at ambient temperatures (Tas) from 28–32°C. Above 32°C (range 34–37°C), Tb increases albeit slightly to 36 ± 1.75°C ( n = 14). The conductance is high 0.27 ± 006cm3 O2g-1 h-l°C-1 ( n = 46) at the lower limit of thermoneutrality. The mean RMR at 9°C (the lowest Ta tested) was 4.82±11 cm3 O2g-1h-1, which is 4.1 times that of the RMR in the TNZ.
At an ambient temperature of 9°C, three of the golden moles entered a state of torpor where the RMR was reduced from 5.9±0.56 to 10 1.0 ± 0.69cm3O2g-1h-1.  相似文献

When acclaimated for two months at 26 C the social Mashona mole-rat Cryptomys hottentotus darlingi (±S.D.) resting metabolic rate (RMR) of 0·98±0.·14cm2O2g -1 h-1 ( n =21), within a thermal neutral zone (TNZ) of 28 31·5 C ambient temperature (Ta). The body temperature (Tb) of the mole-rat is very low. 33·3±0·5 C, and remained stable between 25 31·5 C ( n =28). Above 33 C. Tb increased to a mean of 34·±0· C (n=28) (Ta range 33 39 C). Below Ta 25 C. Tb showed strong poikilothermic tendencies, with Tb dropping to a mean of 26·8±1·16 C. whereas above Ta25 C. Tb varied in a typically endothermic pattern. The conductance is high 0·19±0·03 cm2 O2g1 C 1 (n=28) at the lower limit of thermoneutrality. The mean RMR at 18 C (the lowest Ta tested) was 2·63 ± 0·55 cm3 O2g 1 h 1 (n=7) which is 2·6 times that of the resting metabolic rate in the TNZ.  相似文献

Abstract Inclusion bodies (IB) synthesized during sporulation and enterotoxin formation by Clostridium perfringens were isolated. Sporulating cells were lysed by sonication in the presence of protease inhibitors. IB were isolated by centrifugation in linear gradients of sucrose, sodium bromide or sodium diatrizoate and banded at buoyant densities of 1.33–1.36 g/cm3, 1.30–1.34 g/cm3 and 1.33 g/cm3, respectively. Isolated IB were treated with detergent to remove attached cell membrane. They ranged in size from 0.5–1.4 μm long and from 0.2–0.5 μm wide. They were found to be serologically related to purified enterotoxin.  相似文献

The electrical membrane properties and the swimming behaviour of the freshwater ciliate Bursaridium difficile were studied by current clamp recordings and video analysis. The resting membrane potential was –45 ± 6 mV (mean ± SD, n = 80), and the input resistance and membrane capacitance were 109 ± 42 megaohms (MΩ) (n = 63) and 457 ± 150 picofarads (pF) (n = 42), respectively. Based on an estimated surface area of 6.8 × 10-4 cm2, the corresponding specific membrane resistance and capacitance are 7.4 × 104Ω× cm2 and 0.7 μF/cm2. Bursaridium difficile generates spontaneous, all-or-nothing action potentials with a well-defined threshold in normal medium. The spontaneous firing frequency was 0.22 ± 0.06 Hz (n = 80). The maximum rate of rise of the action potentials was less than 1 V/s, and they displayed a prolonged plateau phase (0.5–1 s). The action potentials were abolished in nominal Ca2+-free solution and are thus Ca2+-spikes. The swimming pattern of Bursaridium in homogeneous surroundings is composed of forward swimming periods interrupted by regular, short periods of backward swimming followed by a change in the forward swimming direction. The turning frequency corresponded to the spontaneous firing frequency, and only forward swimming was observed in nominal Ca2+-free solution. The periods of backward swimming activity are thus linked to the spontaneous action potentials.  相似文献

A survey has been made of the bacterial and fungal populations carried at three different sites on the feet of 60 individuals. The bacteria found at the three sites were quantitatively similar and Micrococcaceae and aerobic coryneform bacteria predominated. The carriage of other bacterial groups was generally low. There was a quantitative variation between sites—mean total counts were 1.04 ± 107 cfu/cm2 skin in the fourth toe cleft, 4.08 ± 105 cfu/cm2 skin on the sole and 1.21 ± 103 cfu/cm2 skin on the dorsal surface. Staphylococci were most often dominant on the sole and dorsal surface whereas aerobic coryneforms predominated in the majority of fourth toe clefts. The higher the total count at a given site the more likely it was that aerobic coryneform bacteria predominated. The skin surface pH was significantly higher on the sole (mean value 6.25) than on the dorsal surface (mean value 5.23). Factors controlling the microbial ecology of the foot are discussed.  相似文献

A population of Tubifex tubifex in an organically rich stream was found to have an annual life-cycle with a prolonged period of reproductive activity throughout the winter and spring. Cocoons were produced mainly during the late winter and early spring. No cocoons were found during August and September, and there were few mature worms at this time.
The population density ranged between 5420 m−2 in mid-September and 613000 m −2 in mid-May. The maximum population biomass (Bmax) recorded was 106 g dry wt m−2 (March) and the minimum was 10 g dry wt m−2 (September). Total annual production (P) was 139 g dry wt m−2 and the average annual biomass ( B ) was 46 g dry wt m−2 giving an annual P/ B ratio of 3.0, and a P/Bmax ratio of 1.3.  相似文献

Preliminary experiments were performed to determine the diurnal variation in cortisol, using trout which had been cannulated three days previously. These results indicated that cortisol levels were reasonably stable between 10.00 and 18.00 hours, thus permitting experimentation during this period without diurnal fluctuations masking the cortisol response. Uncannulated fish were exercised in a flume for 2 h at 1, 2.6 and 5 bl s-1 and plasma samples taken from groups of five animals at 15, 30, 60 and 120 min after the start of exercise and at 1½, 12 and 24 h after the exercise ceased. The cortisol levels in all cases were elevated after 15 min, but the magnitude of the elevation increased with swimming speed. At 1 bl s-1 the cortisol levels increased from 76.4 (± 20.4) to 129.2 (± 20.4) ng ml-1 [mean (± s.d. )]. At 2.6 bl s-1 the increase was from 72.4 (± 17.1) to 254.4 (± 34.4) ng ml-1 and at 5 bl s-1 the increase was from 69.5 (± 27.5) to 326.4 (± 39.0) ng ml-1. The cortisol levels were stable over the exercise period and all groups recovered to baseline levels after 24 h, though the sample taken 12 h after the termination of exercise was elevated due to regular nocturnal increases in cortisol levels. There were no dramatic changes in blood sugar levels during and after exercise at 1 and 3.2 bl s-1.  相似文献

The population structure, age, growth, mortality and harvest intensity of the oyster Crassostrea madrasensis were examined in the Moheskhali Channel, Bangladesh between June 2003 and May 2004. The channel is a representative habitat for the area. C. madrasensis monthly length frequency data were analyzed using FiSAT software for estimating population parameters, including asymptotic length ( L ), growth co-efficient ( K ) and recruitment pattern to assess the status of the stock. Asymptotic length ( L∝ ) and growth co-efficient ( K ) were 20.88 cm and 0.35 year−1, respectively. The growth performance index (φ') was calculated with 2.18. The growth pattern showed negative allometric growth ( b  < 3), with an asymptotic weight ( W ) of about 1124.6 g. The oyster attained an average length of 6.17 cm at the end of 1 year. Total mortality ( Z ) by length-converted catch curve was estimated at 1.78 year−1, fishing mortality ( F ) at 0.77 year−1, and natural mortality ( M ) at 1.01 year−1. The exploitation level ( E ) of C. madrasensis was 0.43, while the maximum allowable limit of exploitation ( E max) was 0.45 for the highest yield. The recruitment pattern was continuous, displaying a single major peak event per year. Habitat temperatures were 25.5–31.0°C (mean ± SD, 29 ± 1.62°C); salinity range was from 12.36 to 26.0 ppt (mean ± SD, 19.6 ± 4.7 ppt). The exploitation level (0.43) indicated that the oyster stock was exploited at almost maximum yield in this channel.  相似文献

Acetylcholine in plants was identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Acetylcholine was found in the following species from 13 families: Betula pendula, Codiaeum variegatum, Ilex opaca, Liquidambar styraciflua, Lonicera japonica, Phaseolus aureus, Phaseolus vulgaris, Pisum sativum, Plantago rugelli, Populus grandidentata, Prunus serotina, Rhus copallina, Smilax hispida, Viburnum dilatatum , and Zea mays . Levels of acetylcholine in leaves ranged from a low of 0.14 ± 0.05 (mean ± SEM) nmol (g fresh weight)−1 in I. opaca to a high of 53 ± 6.6 nmol (g fresh weight)−1 in P. aureus . Acetylcholine was found in all tissues examined regardless of the organ (leaves, stems, or roots) or developmental stage (seedlings, mature plants, or seeds). For P. aureus , continuous light exposure increased acetylcholine levels of leaves, and decreased levels in stem when compared to dark controls. Levels of choline, a precursor of acetylcholine, found in leaves ranged from a low of 84 ± 7.0 nmol (g fresh weight)−1 in L. styraciflua to a high of 3700 ± 200 nmol (g fresh weight)−1 in P. aureus . With these findings, three out of the four components of the cholinergic system have now been identified in plants.  相似文献

Samples of the thymus and head-kidney of domestic carp ( Cyprinus carpio ) were studied in order to evaluate the process of functional and cytological change during ageing. We examined larvae from 6 days post-fertilization, 1- to 10-year-old fish from fishponds, and experimentally stunted 15-year-old fish that had attained no more than 100–120 mm total length (TL) and 18–20 g weight. The primordium of the thymus appears 6 days after fertilization as a group of non-specialized cells 0.8 mm3 in volume. Differentiation of cell types, especially thymocytes, starts in fry of 6 mm TL, and the thymus continues to enlarge, attaining 200 mm3 (±3.4 mm3) in 8-year-old fish of 550 mm TL. Throughout its development the thymus remains active, containing various forms of reticulocytes and thymocytes. The head-kidney appears in pre-hatching embryos on either side of the pharynx as renal units, each with a single glomerulus and a short renal tubule. During development the protonephridia pass through three functional stages: (1) excretory, as the primordial kidney, (2) in a mixed renal and glandular function, producing blood cells and adrenergic cells, and (3) in young fish of 80 mm TL and above, they continue to function as blood producing and endocrine organs. At this last stage the renal elements become degraded. The largest head-kidney measured had a volume of 8 cm3 (±0.8 cm3) in an 8-year-old fish weighing 6.5 kg. Retention of thymal cytological integrity in reproductive older carp and other fish would indicate that ageing in fish, and possibly also in other exothermic vertebrates, is not simply a time-related phenomenon, thereby differing greatly from similar processes in endothermic vertebrate.  相似文献

Morphometric measurements were carried out on some of the structural parameters affecting oxygen diffusing capacity in red muscle of 15 specimens of O. niloticus body weight (b.w.) 0.65–812.3 g. Total capillary length and surface area and total morphometric oxygen diffusing capacity in body trunk red muscle had average values of 4792·7 (± 1740.7 s.e.) m, 415·4 (± 157·3 s.e.) cm2 and 0·0213 (± 0·0075 s.e.) ml−1 min−1 cm−2 mmHg respectively. When expressed as functions of b.w. these parameters had scaling values of 1·02, 1·07 and 0·993 respectively. These figures show a slight increase or almost no change in these structural parameters (which affect diffusion of oxygen to mitochondria in red muscle) per unit weight of fish. This should be important as the role of sustained swimming (by red muscle) becomes more important in larger tilapia. Oxygen diffusion distances were short [3·11 (±0·16 s.e.) μm] which facilitates diffusion of oxygen to mitochondria. The scaling value for oxygen diffusion distances of 0·067 (with respect to body weight) shows a slight increase in this parameter with development. The lungs of five female domestic Muscovy ducks, mean body weight 1.627 kg, total lung volume 48.07 cm3, were analysed by standard morphometric methods. Principal results obtained are: lung volume per unit body weight, 30.17 cm3/g; volume densities of exchange tissue relative to lung volume, 49.24%, blood capillaries relative to exchange tissue, 29.63%, tissue of the blood gas (tissue) barrier relative to exchange tissue, 5.88%; surface area of the blood-gas (tissue) barrier per unit body weight, 30.04 cm2/g; ratios of the surface area of the blood-gas (tissue) barrier per unit volume of the lung and per unit volume of exchange area, 979 cm2/cm3 and 200.06 mm2/mm3, respectively; harmonic and arithmetic mean thicknesses of the tissue barrier, 0.199 μm and 0.303 μm, respectively. The anatomical diffusing capacity of the tissue barrier for oxygen ( DtO2 ) and the total pulmonary diffusing capacity ( DLO2 ), 49.58 ml O2/min/mmHg/kg and 4.55 ml O2/min/mm Hg/kg, respectively. The lungs of the domestic Muscovy duck appear to be about as well adapted anatomically for gas exchange as the lungs of wild anatid species, and there is no clear evidence that domestication has been associated with any deterioration in the anatomical capacity for oxygen uptake. The weight-specific anatomical diffusing capacity of the lung for oxygen ( DLO2/W ) was about 3.6 times greater than the weight-specific physiological value, a factor which falls within the expected range.  相似文献

In an artificial stream channel, wild 1 year old brown trout Salmo trutta were exposed to fluctuations in flow and water level to simulate hydro-peaking conditions downstream of a hydropower installation. Blood plasma cortisol concentrations reached a maximum of 59·4 ± 35·3 ng ml−1 (mean ± 95% CL) 2h after the end of down-ramping. Return to the pre-exposure cortisol level was achieved within 6 h. When subjected to daily cyclical fluctuations over 7 days, plasma cortisol levels were significantly elevated (61·3 ± 26·8 ng ml−1) on the first day compared to undisturbed fish (4·9 ± 3·7 ng ml−1). On the fourth and seventh day, no elevation in plasma cortisol above control levels was observed. No changes in blood glucose that could be attributed to the stressor were found. There was no correlation between plasma cortisol and blood glucose levels. The short-lived cortisol response to daily fluctuations indicates a rapid habituation to this Stressor.  相似文献

Eriophorum vaginatum tillers were collected at Eagle Creek, Alaska and cultivated in aerated solutions under controlled environmental conditions. The nutrient solutions contained traces, 1.05 and 21 mg l−1 N (nitrate) and traces, 0.15 and 3.10 mg l−1 P (phosphate), pH was maintained at 5.5. The high N, 21 mg l−1, and P, 3.18 mg l−1, nutrient solution produced significant biomass increases. Functional leaf areas were significantly enhanced by high N and P doses in the solutions. Root surface areas varied considerably between treatments; however, significant differences were not found. The mean root surface area of a tiller reached 126 cm2 (range 35–290 cm2), whereas the functional leaf area was 6.8 cm2 (range 3.3–20.3 cm2). Tillers growing in the highest N + P solutions produced twice the number of daughter tillers as tillers growing in solutions with trace amounts of N and P.  相似文献

Abstract. The distal inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) is critical in the urinary concentrating process, in part because it is the site of vasopressin (AVP)-regulated permeability to urea. The purpose of these experiments was to develop a cell culture model of the IMCD on permeable structure and to characterize the responsiveness to AVP. Rat IMCD cells were grown to confluence on collagen-coated Millipore filters glued onto plastic rings. To assess the time required to achieve confluence, the transepithelial resistance was measured periodically and was found to be stable after 2 weeks, at a maximal value of 595 ± 22 ω cm2. In separate monolayers the effect of AVP on inulin and urea permeability was determined. While inulin permeability was unchanged after AVP, urea permeability increased from 6.0 ± 0–4 to peak values of 16.0 ± 3–8(10nM),23.1 ± 3–9(1 μM)and28 1 ± 4–9(10μM) X 10-6cms-1 ( n = 24). In 10 other monolayers, after the addition of 1 mM 8-Br-cAMP, urea permeability increased from 5.1 ±0–3 to 8.1 ± 1–6 times 10-6 cm s-1 and, after 8-Br-cAMP +3-isobutyl-l-methylxanthine, to 12.2 ± 0–7 times 10-6 cms-1. We conclude that rat IMCD cells grown in culture exhibit the characteristics of a 'tight' epithelium. Inulin and urea permeability are not different in the absence of AVP, consistent with high resistance junctional complexes. Furthermore, IMCD cells retain the capacity for AVP-regulated urea permeability, a characteristic feature of this nephron segment in vivo.  相似文献

Standard metabolic rate ( R s) at 2°C of eight East Siberian cod Arctogadus borisovi , caught in West Greenland, body mass of 601.5 ± 147.6 g (mean ± s.D.), was 40.9 ± 5.9 mg O2 kg-1 h-1 and 59.0 ± 6.6mg O2 kg-1 h-1 when extrapolated to a standardized 100 g fish. R s was compared with three other Gadidae, to test the theory of metabolic cold adaptation (MCA). There was no evidence of MCA in the family.  相似文献

This study aimed to measure protein synthesis using a stable isotope method, investigate protein-nitrogen flux in a flatfish Pleuronectes flesus , and use the data to test the hypothesis that individual differences in growth efficiency were related to individual differences in protein-nitrogen flux mediated through differences in protein synthesis and degradation. Three measurements of protein-nitrogen flux via consumption, protein synthesis and nitrogenous excretion were made for individual flounder during a 212-day period and fractional rates of protein-nitrogen flux were scaled for a 50–g flounder to provide mean values for protein consumption (2·11 ± 0·21% day−1), protein synthesis (2·08±0·23% day−1), protein growth (0·71±0·06% day−1) and protein degradation (1·37±0·24% day−1). Mean rates of nitrogenous excretion were 0·142 mg N g−1 day−1 and 0·047 mg N g−1 day−1 for ammonia and urea, respectively. Individual flounder had different protein growth efficiencies and this was correlated negatively and significantly with mean rates of protein synthesis ( r - 0·70; P <0·05) and degradation ( r - 0·67; P < 0·05) and correlated positively and significantly with the efficiency of retaining synthesized protein ( r +0·63, P <0·05). This supported the proposed hypothesis that flounder which grow more efficiently achieve this through adopting a low protein turnover strategy.  相似文献

The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for common wolf–fish Anarhichas lupus in the North Sea were: male: L ∞=111·2 cm, t 0=–0·43 and K =0·12; and female: L ∞=115·1 cm, t 0=–0·39 and K =0·11, making this the fastest growing stock reported. Resting metabolic rates (RMR±S.E.) and maximum metabolic rates (MMR±S.E.) for six adult common wolf–fish (mean weight, 1·39 kg) at 5° C were 12·18±1·6 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 and 70·65±7·63 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 respectively, and at 10° C were 25·43±1·31 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 and 113·84±16·26 mg O2 kg–1 h–1. Absolute metabolic scope was 53% greater at 10° C than at 5° C. The diet was dominated by Decapoda (39% overall by relative occurrence), Bivalvia (20%) and Gastropoda (12%). Sea urchins, typically of low energy value, occupied only 7% of the diet. The fast growth probably resulted from summer temperatures approximating to the optimum for food processing and growth, but may have been influenced by diet, and reduced competition following high fishing intensity.  相似文献

The acaricide hexythiazox (Acorit® SC, 100 g a.i.l–1), the fungicide triadimefon (Bayleton spezial® WG, 52 g a.i.kg–1) and the insecticide heptenophos (Hostaquick® EC, 550 g a.i.l–1), were tested in the laboratory for their side-effects on the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis A.H. The pesticides were either applied separately at a range of concentrations or in admixture to detached bean leaves using a Potter Tower to deposit 2 mg spray solution per cm2. No significant differences in the mean mortality rate of the phytoseiid or in the mean reproduction per female was found between the different treatments. Total effect values ranged from 5.4 to 38.7% after separate application of the test products and from 8.9 to 25.5% after treatment with the various pesticide mixtures.  相似文献
