Objective: To determine whether Stunkard's Figure Rating Scale (FRS) is a valid and reliable index of weight status when an unbiased observer assigns the figure ratings of adult women viewed on videotape. Research Methods and Procedures: Seventy‐two women drawn from a community sample participated in a videotaped study in which height and weight were measured. The FRS is a rating scale displaying 9 silhouettes ranging from very thin to very obese. Women were assigned a figure rating “in‐person” by a research assistant (FRS used as a 17‐point scale) and by additional research assistants viewing women only on videotape (FRS used as both a 17‐ and 9‐point scale). Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated for in‐person figure ratings, mean videotape figure ratings, and BMI. Results: BMI and in‐person figure ratings were highly correlated (r = 0.91), as were BMI and both mean 17‐point videotape figure ratings and mean 9‐point videotape figure ratings (r = 0.89 and 0.87, respectively). Inter‐rater agreement for in‐person figure ratings and mean 17‐point videotape figure ratings was 0.86, and agreement between in‐person figure ratings and mean 9‐point videotape figure ratings was 0.82. Discussion: The FRS can be used as an index of women's weight status by an unbiased observer, with subjects viewed in‐person or on videotape.  相似文献

It has been proposed that host castration is a parasite strategy to reallocate host resources from reproductive to vegetative functions to increase parasite fitness. Since resource partitioning between reproduction and vegetative growth can affect host life-history traits, parasite effects on resource allocation can affect both plant fitness and host-parasite coevolution. Field and greenhouse experiments were used to investigate the effects of host castration by the fungus Atkinsonella hypoxylon on the resource allocation and architecture of the grass Danthonia spicata. The results indicate that non-infected D. spicata can reallocate resources from reproduction to vegetative growth when resource allocation to reproduction is prevented. However, I found no evidence that fungal castration causes reallocation of resources from host reproduction to vegetative growth. Instead, infection reduces host biomass and the fungus directly utilizes resources that would have been used for host reproduction for its own reproduction. We investigated sexual reproduction patterns of a ubiquitous littoral cladoceran Alonella nana (Anomopoda, Chydoridae), using ecological and paleoecological approaches to clarify the forcing mechanisms behind its sexual reproduction. Contemporary sampling of A. nana populations in two environmentally different lakes showed abundant sexual reproduction in the lake with eutrophic, oxygen-deficient conditions and scarce gamogenesis in the oligotrophic, well-oxygenated lake. Sediment core studies from the same lakes indicated that comparable sexual reproduction patterns had prevailed for many centuries. However, in eutrophic Lake Hamptr?sk, A. nana increased its sexual reproduction from 1700 ad onward, consistently with decreasing trend in chironomid-inferred oxygen. The core samples, together with a surface sediment dataset of 25 lakes from southern and central Finland, showed a negative correlation between ephippia of A. nana and winter oxygen, although the surface sediment data per se did not show any significant correlation. When the dataset was scaled locally to include lakes in close proximity in southern Finland, the correlation became clearer. The results imply that the spatial and temporal variations in sexual reproduction of A. nana populations may partly be explained by differences in oxygen levels.  相似文献

Quercus crispula var. horikawae, a stunted shrub oak, occurs on mountains with deep snow on the Sea of Japan side of Japan. This oak generates patches of multiple creeping stems. It is unclear whether these patches are the result of asexual or sexual reproduction, or both. We therefore aimed to describe the clonal structure and gene flow in Q . crispula var. horikawae on Mount Nasu in central Japan by using nuclear microsatellites. Genotypes of 331 stems with no distinct connection with roots and creeping stems above the ground were determined using nine loci in two study plots, and 64 acorns from three mother genets in a plot were determined using eight loci. The results of the clonal identification indicated that the patches consisted of 51 genets; at least 85% of the stems may have been derived from asexual reproduction through sprouting and layering. The prominence of asexual reproduction may be a result of adaptation to the snowy environment. In contrast, 15% of the ramets in the study plots probably originate via sexual reproduction by seedling regeneration. Analyses of the spatial genetic structure and paternity showed that limited ability of the pollen and seeds to disperse might result in the spatial aggregations of closely related offspring at a relatively short distance (<10 m), and inbreeding, a factor that might reduce sexual reproduction, was not observed. Thus, sexual reproduction could be reduced by ecological rather than genetic factors, namely the hindrance of seedling regeneration by the dense coverage of dwarf bamboo (Sasa) on the forest floor.  相似文献

Reproduction is an energetically costly biological process. Among the freshwater zooplankton, rotifers and cladocerans reproduce parthenogenetically and the cost of reproduction can be estimated using the life table data from demographic studies. Reduced probability of future survival or future reproduction as a result of current investment in offspring production (trade-off) is the central theme of the cost hypothesis. Correlations using present reproduction vs. future reproduction (called the reproductive costs) or future survival (called the survival costs) can be used to evaluate the cost hypothesis. In this work sets of correlations were made: (1) between present reproduction (m x) vs. future survival (l x+1, l x+2, l x+3 etc. for the entire lifespan) (survival costs), and (2) present reproduction (m x) vs. future reproduction (m x+1, m x+2, m x+3 etc. for the entire reproductive span) (reproductive costs). These correlations were plotted against the cohort age-classes in order to quantify survival and reproductive costs in rotifers (Asplanchna girodi, Brachionus macracanthus, B. variabilis and Platyias quadricornis) and cladocerans (Ceriodaphnia cornuta – one strain maintained on Chlorella and another strain adapted to Microcystis), Daphnia carinata, D. laevis, Moina macrocopa, Pleuroxus aduncus, Scapholeberis kingi and Simocephalus vetulus). All the tested rotifer species showed negative tendency in correlation coefficients (when the data of current reproduction vs. future reproduction and future survival were plotted) for both reproductive and survival costs. However, from the total survival and reproductive costs derived, 84% of the former and 42% of the latter were statistically significant. In cladocerans about 80% of the costs (correlations between current reproduction vs. future survival or future reproduction) were negative suggesting that present reproduction had negatively affected both the further survival and reproduction of test populations. In terms of statistically significant survival costs, the cladocerans showed a trend slightly lower (72%) but comparable to rotifers. The reproductive costs were significant in 45% cases. In our study, the simple statistical correlations detected the trade-offs between reproduction and survival. Thus, in more than 60% cases of both survival and reproductive costs in zooplankton were negative, and our data supported the cost hypothesis, in the majority of cases where reproduction by zooplankton of a given age class caused reduced survival and reproduction of the next age class.  相似文献

Three different cultures of dimorphic bug,Pyrrhocoris apterus, were analyzed concerning diapause and its relation to wing morph pattern. The proportion of macropterous bugs was considerably higher (36%) in the Mediterranean culture from Israel than that (1.3%) in the temperate culture from the Czech Republic. The macropterous morph- and brachypterous morphrelated types of reproduction arrest, differing by the length of pre-oviposition period, were distinguished in cultures analyzed. The reproduction arrest with an average pre-oviposition period of 38.2 days in Mediterranean macropters and 18.5 days in macropters from selected macropterous strain, was found to be typical for macropterous morph. Two different photoperiodic conditions induced macropterous morph-related reproduction arrest, the long-day (18 h light-6 h dark) photoperiod in macropterous strain macropters and the short-day (12 h light-12 h dark) photoperiod in Mediterranean macropters. The brachypterous morph-related reproduction arrest, characterized by pre-oviposition period longer than 90 days, occurred predominantly in diapausing brachypterous bugs. While the hibernal diapause of brachypterous bugs was characterized by a very high level of the 78- and 82-kDa proteins in haemolymph, their content in haemolymph of macropters during macropterous morph-related reproduction arrest was almost as low as in the reproductive adults. The variation of reproduction arrest in relation to wing dimorphism represents an important feature in the life strategy ofP. apterus.  相似文献

Spore productivities and establishment probabilities of eumycetozoans were estimated and compared with quantitative data obtained from field surveys, using series of cultures of a given substrate. Spore numbers per spore case were found to increase from one to four in protostelids to up to 105–106 in myxomycetes, whereas average spore size decreased slightly from 14.8 μm for protostelids to 10.3 μm in myxomycetes. Spore numbers of fructifications calculated from dimensions of spores and fruit bodies were in good agreement with direct counts carried out for six species of myxomycetes. A colonisation model is presented that estimates frequencies (as a percent of successfully colonized habitat islands), which is independent of a given density of spore rain and the sexual system of the species being considered. Whereas asexual species need a minimum spore rain of ca 0.7 spores per habitat island to reach a frequency of 50 %, this figure is at least 2.4-fold higher for sexual species, depending from the incompatibility system assumed. Data from cultures indicate that the maximum potential spore rain is usually three orders of magnitude higher than the minimum figure required to create the observed frequencies. Eumycetozoans seem to follow the evolutionary trends predicted by the model. Species with sexual reproductive systems produce often more spores than asexual ones; many morphospecies have sexual and asexual strains; and back-conversion from sexual to asexual reproduction occurs occasionally.  相似文献

We have investigated stem turnover strategy for Lindera umbellata, an understory shrub that sprouts from its rootstock under natural conditions to replace constituent stems, on the basis of the hypothesis that the multiple-stemmed form of woody species is an adaptation enabling efficient reproduction in high-stress environments. We tested the hypothesis that the timing of stem replacement maximizes sexual reproduction for the shrub. We developed a model for the time of optimum replacement of a stem by a daughter stem which maximizes the sexual reproduction of a shrub and tested the model using L. umbellata growing in the field. From the model, the optimum time of replacement of a stem with a daughter stem is when cumulative sexual reproduction per unit time for the stem is maximum. In practice, this will be the last age (t opt) at which annual sexual reproduction in a stem can potentially exceed cumulative sexual reproduction per unit time for the stem. Half of the stems died at almost t opt and had sexually mature daughter stems at that time. Other stems, however, died at times more remote from t opt when daughter stems were sexually immature. It is thought that normal replacement of the latter stems was prevented by accidents such as breakage. We conclude that clumps of L. umbellata achieve efficient sexual reproduction by stem replacement at the optimum time, although accidents can, to some extent, determine when the stem actually dies.  相似文献

Recent interest in breeding strategies for Hypericum perforatum L. requires a better understanding of the floral biology of this medicinal plant. The aim of the present study was to check, whether RAPD fingerprinting may be a useful tool for research on the mode of reproduction of this species. Progenies from three defined single plants of two accessions, as well as progenies from a random sample of seeds of a wild population, of H. perforatum were characterized by RAPD analyses using six primers. The results obtained by DNA fingerprints indicate the predominance of an identical mode of reproduction for this species, obviously due to apomixis. Nevertheless, non-identical reproduction was evident as a minor effect in H. perforatum, as could be demonstrated by significant deviations in the RAPD fingerprints of progenies from one single plant. It is concluded that RAPD fingerprint analysis is a suitable technique to discover identity or non-identity in H. perforatum populations. Therefore, RAPDs may be used in addition to cytological studies to confirm the mode of reproduction by apomixis versus self-pollination, haploid parthenogenesis or cross-fertilization. Received: 12. Summary

Stichopus chloronotus (Brandt, 1835) is one among nine aspidochirotide holothurian species known to reproduce both sexually by broadcast spawning and asexually by transverse fission. New data on the sexual cycle of this species in La Réunion are presented here and information available on sexual and asexual reproduction in this species is summarised. Sexual reproduction on La Réunion shows a distinct seasonality with a main spawning period in the warm season (November-February). The spawning period the Great Barrier Reef appears to be at the same time. Some intriguing deviations from unity in sex-ratio, usually biased towards more male individuals, have been observed in both geographic regions (sex ratio at La Reunion 31:1). New data on the asexual reproduction of this species in La Réunion confirm the high rates of fission. The peak of asexual reproduction in both the Indian and Pacific Ocean was observed in winter (June-July). Thus, asexual reproduction in this species occurs outside the season for sexual reproduction. The rate of asexual reproduction appears to vary between sample locations. However, results of population genetic studies on S. chloronotus (Uthicke et al., 1999; Uthicke et al., 2001) indicated that in most populations investigated a maximum of about 60% of all individuals may be derived from sexual recruitment. Cluster analyses on genetic distances between populations grouped populations within Oceans together, with the exception of one sample from a nearshore reef of the GBR. Although genetic differences between the two regions exist, these are relatively small regarding the large geographic distance. We conclude that asexual reproduction in S. chloronotus is important to maintain local population sizes, but that larval exchange between populations mediated by sexual reproduction is important for colonisation of new areas and to provide connectivity between populations. Here, we present the first synthesis of these phenomena for a holothurian species.  相似文献

Clonality is a widespread life history trait in flowering plants that may be essential for population persistence, especially in environments where sexual reproduction is unpredictable. Frequent clonal reproduction, however, could hinder sexual reproduction by spatially aggregating ramets that compete with seedlings and reduce inter‐genet pollination. Nevertheless, the role of clonality in relation to variable sexual reproduction in population dynamics is often overlooked. We combined population matrix models and pollination experiments to compare the demographic contributions of clonal and sexual reproduction in three Dicentra canadensis populations, one in a well‐forested landscape and two in isolated forest remnants. We constructed stage‐based transition matrices from 3 years of census data to evaluate annual population growth rates, λ. We used loop analysis to evaluate the relative contribution of different reproductive pathways to λ. Despite strong temporal and spatial variation in seed set, populations generally showed stable growth rates. Although we detected some pollen limitation of seed set, manipulative pollination treatments did not affect population growth rates. Clonal reproduction contributed significantly more than sexual reproduction to population growth in the forest remnants. Only at the well‐forested site did sexual reproduction contribute as much as clonal reproduction to population growth. Flowering plants were more likely to transition to a smaller size class with reduced reproductive potential in the following year than similarly sized nonflowering plants, suggesting energy trade‐offs between sexual and clonal reproduction at the individual level. Seed production had negligible effects on growth and tuber production of individual plants. Our results demonstrate that clonal reproduction is vital for population persistence in a system where sexual reproduction is unpredictable. The bias toward clonality may be driven by low fitness returns for resource investment in sexual reproduction at the individual level. However, chronic failure in sexual reproduction may exacerbate the imbalance between sexual and clonal reproduction and eventually lead to irreversible loss of sex in the population.  相似文献

Survival data, in addition to data on growth and reproduction rate, are necessary to estimate rotifer productivity under various thermal conditions. A method of individual culturing of Philodina roseola helped the authors to obtain data concerning length of life span and realisation of reproduction potential at different temperatures, ranging from 9 to 35 °C. The method also was helpful in revealing the causes of individual deaths. It is shown that at a temperature of 20 °C net reproduction rate (R0) of Ph. roseola is maximum and is equal to reproduction potential of the individual. The peculiarity of Philodina ontogenetic reaction to temperature beyond optimum is the impairment of reproduction process.  相似文献

The purpose of this article was to study the trade-offs among vegetative growth, clonal, and sexual reproduction in an aquatic invasive weed Spartina alterniflora that experienced different inundation depths and clonal integration. Here, the rhizome connections between mother and daughter ramets were either severed or left intact. Subsequently, these clones were flooded with water levels of 0, 9, and 18 cm above the soil surface. Severing rhizomes decreased growth and clonal reproduction of daughter ramets, and increased those of mother ramets grown in shallow and deep water. The daughter ramets disconnected from mother ramets did not flower, while sexual reproduction of mother ramets was not affected by severing. Clonal integration only benefited the total rhizome length, rhizome biomass, and number of rhizomes of the whole clones in non-inundation conditions. Furthermore, growth and clonal reproduction of mother, daughter ramets, and the whole clone decreased with inundation depth, whereas sexual reproduction of mother ramets and the whole clones increased. We concluded that the trade-offs among growth, clonal, and sexual reproduction of S. alterniflora would be affected by inundation depth, but not by clonal integration.  相似文献

To clarify the life history of Clintonia udensis, we investigated its reproductive systems and spatio‐temporal population structure. Pollination experiments and the observation of floral visitors revealed that C. udensis was compatible with both self‐ and outcross‐pollen, and it potentially produces seeds by insect‐mediated outcrossing in natural conditions. In addition, propagation by clonal reproduction from rhizomes was evident. In this study, it was clarified that C. udensis potentially propagates by sexual and asexual reproduction and maintains its population through a stable frequency of flowering. The differences in the dependence on each reproduction mode could be one of the contributing factors for creating a variety of population sizes and distribution patterns of ramets in populations.  相似文献

1. We investigated the effect of refractory dissolved organic matter (refractory DOM: fulvic acids (FAs) and ultrafiltrates (UFs)), isolated from five different sources, on the reproduction of the bacterivorous nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Nematodes were exposed to DOM (0.5–64 mg L?1 dissolved organic carbon) during a whole life cycle (72 h). At the end of the test, the number of offspring per worm was determined.
2. We also studied the effect of refractory DOM on abundance, cell size, and activity of the bacteria (Escherichia coli) that were used as a food source for the nematodes, to assess possible indirect effects of DOM via the food organisms.
3. The effects of DOM on the reproduction of C. elegans varied, depending on the origin and concentration of DOM. FAs isolated from a soil leachate and from the effluent of a waste water plant, as well as UFs from a humic lake and from a marsh, stimulated the reproduction of C. elegans. FAs from ground water had no effect, while FAs from a humic lake inhibited the reproduction of the nematodes. All effects occurred at ecologically relevant DOM concentrations and showed clear dose–response relationships.
4. Neither bacterial abundance nor cell size were influenced by refractory DOM. Bacterial activity was unaffected by four types of DOM. Only FAs from the humic lake caused a significant decrease in bacterial activity over 72 h.
5. The negative effect of FAs from the humic lake on nematode reproduction may be a consequence of a lower bacterial activity in this treatment. The positive effects of refractory DOM, however, could not be related to bacterial parameters. Therefore, we assume that the DOM directly influenced the reproduction of C. elegans. We speculate that refractory DOM can potentially be an additional carbon source or a source of trace nutrients influencing the reproduction of C. elegans. Adsorption of refractory DOM on bacterial cells, serving as food for the nematodes, may have been an important factor for the availability of DOM for C. elegans.  相似文献

Summary Morphological and cytological investigations conducted onCyanoiheca longipes Pascher, revealed the presence of a nucleus, and the asexual and sexual reproduction of the organism is described. It was found that the asexual reproduction is either a modified binary fission or by means of formation of numerous endospores. The sexual reproduction consists of pedogamy which takes place in the stalk. These observations excludeCyanotheca from the division of Cyanophyta. Some speculations about the systematic position of this microorganism are discussed without giving a definite answer about its correct place in the plant kingdom.  相似文献

Summary Apomixis, asexual reproduction through seed, is an obligate mode of reproduction in several species from the genus Pennisetum. Transfer of apomixis to sexual, cultivated pearl millet (P. glaucum) from a wild species P. squamulatum has resulted in an obligate apomictic backcross line with a low, but unknown number, of chromosomes from the wild species. Molecular markers (restriction fragment length polymorphisms and random amplified polymorphic DNAs) have been identified that unequivocally demonstrate the presence of P. squamulatum DNA in BC3. Three of the informative RFLP clones have been sequenced and converted to sequence-tagged sites that can be amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. Molecular genetic analysis of more advanced back-cross individuals, using the two types of polymerase chain reaction-based molecular markers, has demonstrated co-inheritance of apomictic reproduction and two of the molecular markers. The remaining five molecular markers generally co-segregate with each other but are not linked with the mode of reproduction. These results suggest that genes for apomixis apparently can be transmitted by a single chromosome. Chromosome-specific markers will provide a starting point for the mapping of this genetically intractable reproductive trait.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction may be cryptic or facultative in fungi and therefore difficult to detect. Magnaporthe oryzae, which causes blast, the most damaging fungal disease of rice, is thought to originate from southeast Asia. It reproduces asexually in all rice‐growing regions. Sexual reproduction has been suspected in limited areas of southeast Asia, but has never been demonstrated in contemporary populations. We characterized several M. oryzae populations worldwide both biologically and genetically, to identify candidate populations for sexual reproduction. The sexual cycle of M. oryzae requires two strains of opposite mating types, at least one of which is female‐fertile, to come into contact. In one Chinese population, the two mating types were found to be present at similar frequencies and almost all strains were female‐fertile. Compatible strains from this population completed the sexual cycle in vitro and produced viable progenies. Genotypic richness and linkage disequilibrium data also supported the existence of sexual reproduction in this population. We resampled this population the following year, and the data obtained confirmed the presence of all the biological and genetic characteristics of sexual reproduction. In particular, a considerable genetic reshuffling of alleles was observed between the 2 years. Computer simulations confirmed that the observed genetic characteristics were unlikely to have arisen in the absence of recombination. We therefore concluded that a contemporary population of M. oryzae, pathogenic on rice, reproduces sexually in natura in southeast Asia. Our findings provide evidence for the loss of sexual reproduction by a fungal plant pathogen outside its centre of origin.  相似文献

The phenology of germination, vegetative growth and sexual reproduction in the annual Chamaesyce maculata (L.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) were investigated in a natural population in western Japan. Seedlings emerged from mid-June to early October, with three peaks: mid-June, late July and late August. Plants that emerged in June commenced sexual reproduction from late July, and thereafter both vegetative growth and sexual reproduction occurred together until early November, the plants showing no switching from vegetative growth to sexual reproduction. Seedlings that emerged in June and July suffered high mortality, but most seedlings that emerged from August onward survived until the reproductive stage. The minimum size for reproduction was largest for plants that emerged early in the season, and it decreased with a delay in seedling emergence. The late emergence of seedlings that resulted in low reproductive output may be to some extent compensated for by the increased probability of survival in the seedling stage. A transplant experiment clarified that C. maculata can repeat a maximum of three overlapping generations within a year. Multiple generations per year were attained by non-dormant seeds produced in the first and second generations and clearly resulted in an increased reproductive output per year. The life cycle with multiple overlapping generations may have been acquired in habitats where unpredictable disturbance results in temporally unsuitable conditions for germination, vegetative growth and sexual reproduction of annual plants, but where suitable conditions frequently continue over a period longer than the single generation time of annual plants.  相似文献

Most investigations dealing with rotifer reproduction have been performed with populations and not with individuals. At the same time the variations in the growth and reproduction rates of rotifers are of considerable interest. This paper presents the results of investigations carried out by culturing individuals of Philodina roseola during the lifespan of an individual under different temperature conditions ranging from 9 to 35 °C. The paper presents curves showing the growth in length and weight, the periods of maximum growth rate and the maximum sizes of Philodina as affected by temperature conditions. The reproduction rate is investigated at the same time. The variation in egg evolution duration, in duration of the reproductive period and in the egg laying rate are shown under all the conditions investigated. The data serve as a basis for estimating the effect of temperature on the productivity of Philodina roseola.  相似文献
