In species where parents repeatedly provide their offspring with food, the offspring often communicate their need to the parents. Burying beetles, which breed on a wide size range of carcasses of small vertebrates, are interesting model systems to test theories on begging, because the larvae show partial begging, that is, they obtain food through both signalling to their parents (begging) and feeding directly from the carcass. We manipulated resource availability inNicrophorus vespilloides by providing parents with mouse carcasses spanning a wide size range, and allowing them to rear the larvae that hatched, so that both the amount of resources and the number of siblings varied. Time spent begging by each larva was strongly influenced by the time parents spent near the larvae. Brood size had a nonlinear effect on larval begging, with begging increasing with brood size for relatively smaller broods and decreasing again for larger broods. Carcass size and number of parents present had no effect on begging. Time spent provisioning the larvae by the parents was strongly associated with the time spent begging by each larva. Parents spent more time provisioning under biparental care than under uniparental care, while brood size and carcass size had no significant effect. These findings suggest that the larvae adjust their begging to the behaviour of their parents and the number of siblings, but not to the amount of resources. Furthermore, parents adjust the time spent provisioning to the average amount of begging by each larva in the brood, and not to the availability of resources. 相似文献

Filial cannibalism (the eating of one's own offspring) occurs in a variety of taxa, but is especially prevalent in fishes with parental care. Recent research supports a central tenet of parental-investment theory; that is, parents consume their offspring when it maximizes their lifetime reproductive success. This review outlines the theoretical framework used to explain the adaptive significance of filial cannibalism, evaluates experimental studies to test some predictions of this theory and discusses how the occurrence of filial cannibalism affects other aspects of a species' reproductive ecology. 相似文献

Recent studies on birds have shown that offspring begging and parental provisioning covary at the phenotypic level, which is thought to reflect genetic correlations. However, prenatal maternal factors, like yolk testosterone, may also facilitate parent-offspring coadaptation via their effects on offspring begging and development. In fact, maternal effects are thought to adjust offspring phenotype to the environmental conditions they will experience after birth, which are in turn strongly dependent on the levels of parental provisioning. Using cross-fostering experiments in canaries, we tested the role of maternal effects on parent-offspring coadaptation from two different approaches. First, we analyzed whether females deposit yolk testosterone in relation to their own or their partner's prospective parental provisioning, measured as the rate of parental feeding to foster nestlings. Second, we investigated whether females deposit yolk testosterone in relation to costs they incurred when raising a previous brood, as this likely impinges on their capacity to provide parental care in the near future. However, from the results of both experiments we have no evidence that canary females deposit yolk testosterone in order to match offspring begging to the levels of care they and/or their partners provide. We therefore found no evidence that yolk testosterone facilitates parent-offspring coadaptation. In addition, our results suggest that the functional consequences of yolk testosterone deposition may relate to hatching asynchrony since it primarily varied with egg laying order. 相似文献

Throughout the animal kingdom, distinctive behaviour by offspring commonly precedes and accompanies their provisioning by parents. Here, we assess empirical support for the recent theory that begging advertises offspring need, that parents provision young in relation to begging intensity, and that the apparently costly nature of begging ensures the reliability of the signal. While there is some support for the predictions of honest signalling models, empirical work has also revealed a host of complexities (such as the use of multiple signals) that existing theoretical analyses have only begun to address. 相似文献

Mutation induction in directly exposed cells is currently regarded as the main component of the genetic risk of ionising radiation for humans. However, recent studies showing that exposure to ionising radiation results in elevated mutation rates detectable in the non-irradiated progeny of exposed cells challenge the existing paradigm in radiation biology. This review describes some recent data on radiation-induced genomic instability in vitro and mainly focuses on the in vivo phenomenon of transgenerational instability, where elevated mutation rates are detected in the non-exposed offspring of irradiated parents. The possible mechanisms and implications of transgenerational instability are also discussed. 相似文献

Superparasitism refers to the oviposition behavior of parasitoid females who lay their eggs in an already parasitized host. This often yields intense competition among larvae that are sharing the same host. Why would a female oviposit in such hostile habitat instead of looking for a better quality, unparasitized host? Here we present a continuous-time model of host-parasitoid interaction and discuss alternative scenarios. This model is first used to analyze the evolution of the superparasitism behavior of a solitary proovigenic parasitoid under both time and egg limitation. Then, following the recent discovery by Varaldi et al., we allow the parasitoid to be infected by a virus that alters the superparasitism behavior of its host to enhance its own horizontal transmission. The analysis of the coevolution of this manipulative behavior with the oviposition behavior of uninfected females clarifies and quantifies the conflict that emerges between the parasitoid and its virus. The model also yields new testable predictions. For example, we expect that uninfected parasitoids should superparasite less after coevolving with the manipulative virus. More generally, this model provides a theoretical framework for analyzing the evolution of the manipulation of parasitoid life-history traits by microparasites. 相似文献

There is a remarkable similarity in the appearance of groups of animal species during periods of their embryonic development. This classic observation has long been viewed as an emphatic realization of the principle of common descent. Despite the importance of embryonic conservation as a unifying concept, models seeking to predict and explain different patterns of conservation have remained in contention. Here, we focus on early embryonic development and discuss several lines of evidence, from recent molecular data, through developmental networks to life-history strategies, that indicate that early animal embryos are not highly conserved. Bringing this evidence together, we argue that the nature of early development often reflects adaptation to diverse ecological niches. Finally, we synthesize old and new ideas to propose a model that accounts for the evolutionary process by which embryos have come to be conserved. 相似文献

'Parentally biased favouritism' occurs when the two parents differentially care for individual offspring or kinds of offspring. Examples in birds include brood division and differential investment by the two parents in relation to the size or sex of the offspring. This paper uses mathematical models to investigate which ideas can, in theory, explain parentally biased favouritism. One previous explanation is that the parents differ in their cost of reproduction and that the parent who consequently invests least concentrates its care on the more valuable offspring. However, a mathematical model predicts the total care given by each parent and received by each offspring, not how much each parent cares for each offspring, and hence does not explain parentally biased favouritism. Parentally biased favouritism towards particular types of offspring can be explained by a difference between the parents in the benefits of caring for a given type of offspring or in the effort incurred in providing care to a given type of offspring, but then it is extreme, with at least one of the parents providing care to only one type of offspring. Parentally biased favouritism towards particular individual offspring (brood division) can be explained by parent-offspring conflict or sexual conflict. 相似文献

Dermatophytes are causing superficial mycosis in animals and humans. Depending on the geophilic, zoophilic or anthropophilic origin of the fungus but also on the immunological status of the patient, symptomatology can widely differ. Nevertheless, each species is currently associated with typical clinical manifestations, even if atypical localizations and/or clinical pictures are sometimes also reported. Diagnostic tools applied to species identification have been changing since the last two decades with the more frequent use of molecular methods currently considered nowadays as reference methods for species identification. It becomes obvious that the algorithm used for the distinction of closely related species needs to combine phenotypic and genomic methods. All these different points are discussed, and the most recent novel species causing or involved in human dermatophytosis are reported. 相似文献

Parasite-induced change in host behavior of a freshwater snail: parasitic manipulation or byproduct of infection? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Host behavioral changes due to parasitism are often assumedto be
adaptations of the parasite. However, behavioral effectsof parasites may be a
generalized response to parasitism andonly coincidentally beneficial for
parasite transmission. Forthis reason, alternatives to the manipulation
hypothesis shouldbe tested. Previous work demonstrated that the trematode
parasiteMicrophallus sp. influences the behavior of the snail
Potamopyrgusantipodarum in a way that may increase the probability
of transmission. Here I report work conducted to test alternatives to the
manipulationhypothesis. In a field study, the effect of Microphallus
onbehavior was compared to that of two other castrating parasitegroups to
determine if the behavioral change is simply a byproductof parasitism. Also,
the foraging behaviors of infected anduninfected snails were examined in the
presence and absenceof food resources to determine if the hunger level of
Microphallus-infectedsnails could account for the parasite-induced
behavioral change.First, Microphallus-infected snails were found on
top of rocksduring the day less often than the two other parasite groups.
Thisevidence suggests that the behavioral change caused by
Microphallusis specific to Microphallus-infected snails.
Second, Microphallus-infectedsnails responded to the lack of food
differently from uninfectedsnails. Uninfected snails retreated to safer
positions underrocks when the food source was removed from the top of the
rocks, while Microphallus-infected snails remained on top of the
rockswhere the risk of consumption by the final host is greater.Taken
together with previous studies, these results suggestthat infection by
Microphallus results in behavior that enhancesparasite
transmission. 相似文献

It is still unclear whether the paradoxical arteriovenous carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) difference found in critical illness is due to increased COHb production by the lung, or whether this gradient is caused by technical artifacts using spectrophotometry. In healthy and matched endotoxemic sheep, blood gases were analyzed with a standard ABL 625 and the updated version, an ABL 725. The latter one was accurately calibrated for COHb wavelengths (SAT 100) to eliminate the FCOHb dependency on oxygen tension. All endotoxemic sheep exhibited a hypotensive-hyperdynamic circulation and a pulmonary hypertension. Interestingly, arteriovenous COHb difference occurred in both healthy and endotoxemic sheep (P<0.001 each). Arterial and central venous COHb concentrations determined with the ABL 625 were significantly lower than those measured with the ABL 725 (P<0.001 each). We conclude that (a) arteriovenous COHb difference per se does not reflect critical illness and (b) measurements with an ABL 625 underestimate COHb concentrations. 相似文献

Species persistence in northerly glacial refugia of Europe: a matter of chance or biogeographical traits? 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:3
Aim The southern European peninsulas (Iberian, Italian and Balkan) are considered to have been refugia for many European species of plants and animals during the climatic extremes of the Pleistocene ice ages. A number of recent studies (fossil and genetic), however, have provided evidence for full‐glacial survival of some species beyond these peninsulas. Here we explore the biogeographical traits of these species, and ask whether they possessed certain characteristics that enabled them to persist in more northerly refugia. Location Europe. Methods Fossil and genetic evidence for refugial localities of species that survived in Europe during the last full‐glacial was obtained from the literature (totalling 90 species: 34 woody plants and 56 vertebrates). Forty‐seven of these species (23 woody plants and 24 vertebrates) had fossil evidence, whereas the remaining 43 species (11 woody plants and 32 vertebrates) had only genetic evidence. All species were scored according to their present geographical distribution, habitat preference and life‐history traits. The species were classified on the basis of these traits using hierarchical cluster analysis. Analysis of similarities was used to examine differences in vertebrate and woody plant species groups that survived only in southerly refugia and those that also persisted in more northerly locations. Non‐metric multi‐dimensional scaling was used to examine patterns observed between and within groups. Results Results from our analysis of species with fossil and genetic evidence for survival in refugia reveal that species that survived only in southerly refugia were large‐seeded trees or thermophilous vertebrates. In contrast, species that had a full‐glacial distribution, including more northerly locations, were wind‐dispersed, habitat‐generalist trees with the ability to reproduce vegetatively, and habitat‐generalist mammals with present‐day northerly distributions. Main conclusions Analysis of the geographical distribution, habitat preference and life‐history traits of the species studied suggests that underlying biogeographical traits may have determined their response to Pleistocene glaciation. The traits most commonly found in present populations with a northerly distribution in Europe enabled the same species to exist much farther north than the southern European peninsulas during the full‐glacial. It is possible that many of these species are now in restricted populations, within the ‘warm‐stage’ refugia of the current interglacial. The northerly full‐glacial survival of a number of woody plants and vertebrate species has significant implications for understanding migration rates of these species in response to climate change. It also has important implications for understanding current patterns of genetic diversity of European species. We suggest that both fossil and genetic evidence should be used to identify and prioritize for conservation of refugial localities in southern and northern Europe. 相似文献

Mapping adaptive trait loci (ATL) underlying ecological divergence is an essential step towards understanding the processes that generate phenotypic diversity. Technological advances have made it possible to sequence exomes in nonmodel systems, providing an efficient means of analysing functional genetic variants. Divergence scans of genetic markers for outlier loci, or ‘divergence mapping’, have been used to map locally adapted genes, but this approach is likely to be underpowered when background divergence is elevated. Genotype–phenotype association tests in admixed populations, or ‘admixture mapping’, may provide a useful approach for mapping locally adapted loci when neutral divergence is high. To determine the power and limits of divergence mapping, we simulated exomes containing a single ATL across two parental populations of varying neutral divergence, estimated divergence and quantified the power to identify the ATL. We found that divergence mapping had very high power when background FST is <0.2, but decreased dramatically above this level. To evaluate the utility of admixture mapping, we simulated exomes from admixed populations, then simulated phenotypes, conducted genotype–phenotype association tests and found that even two generations of random mating after admixture could provide high mapping power in scenarios where pure divergence mapping was ineffective (FST = 0.35). Moreover, admixture mapping had high power across all levels of divergence after 20 generations since admixture. Together with high‐throughput exome sequencing, admixture mapping could be used to map ATL in systems such as Heliconius butterflies or Gryllus crickets when experimental design and analytical approach are chosen accordingly. 相似文献

Breeding success in Blue Tits: good territories or good parents? 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Territorial quality and parental quality are usually assumed to be the main sources of variation in the reproductive success of passerine birds. To evaluate their relative importance for variation in breeding time (itself an important factor for breeding success), clutch size and offspring condition at fledging, we analysed six years of data from a Blue Tit Parus caeruleus population breeding on the island of Gotland, Sweden. Hatching dates and the condition of offspring were consistent for territories between years and accounted for 30% and 33% of the variation in these variables, respectively. After removing the effect of territory quality, none of the breeding parameters were significantly repeatable for individual females, but offspring condition was repeatable for males, accounting for 28% of variation. For females breeding on the same territory in subsequent seasons (combined effect of individual and territory quality) only hatching date was repeatable (45% of variation accounted for). In males, the combined effect of individual and territory quality was repeatable for offspring condition and accounted for 33% of variation, but this result was only marginally significant. Consistency of the peak frass-fall date for individual frass collectors over the study period suggests that repeatable hatching dates on territories may be related to the relationship between timing of breeding and timing of peak food availability on territories. Our results suggest that territory quality is more important than parental quality for breeding success in the Blue Tit, and that male (but not female) quality makes a considerable contribution to reproductive success. 相似文献

Summary Two species ofEuphydryas butterflies were studied in California, USA, and showed considerable diet overlap at the species level. They utilize many of the same plant genera for oviposition. However,E. editha is less likely to use woody perennials than isE. chalcedona. Both butterfly species are known to specialize on different host plants in different populations, so species level divergence may not be a good predictor of community level divergence. Within five communities,E. editha andE. chalcedona showed no dietary overlap. A major component of the niche ofE. editha in one community was occupied byE. chalcedona in a second community, even though both butterfly species occupied both communities. These resource use patterns indicate that community level interactions may affect diet divergence. The degree to which divergence within communities is greater (or less) than expected from a species level comparison may be used to provide a measure of community organization. Equations are given in the Appendix for calculating overlap probabilities from presence/absence types of data; in this study, presence is oviposition on a particular plant species, absence is no oviposition on that plant species. Given the various assumptions of the model,E. editha andE. chalcedona show significant community level components of their dietary divergence in the areas studied. However, in some other communitiesE. editha andE. chalcedona do share host plant species. Therefore, we could not demonstrate community level divergence conclusively, nor has this been demonstrated for any other pair of insect herbivore species. We do not know whether this is because the phenomenon is truly rare or just very hard to demonstrate. 相似文献

Previous investigations suggest that the infection of the cyprinid roach, Rutilus rutilus, with the larval plerocercoid forms of the cestode, Ligula intestinalis, creates behavioural and morphological changes in the fish host, potentially of adaptive significance to the parasite in promoting transmission to definitive avian hosts. Here we consider whether these behavioural changes are important in shaping the distribution of parasite individuals across the fish population. An examination of field data illustrates that fish infected with a single parasite were more scarce than expected under the negative binomial distribution, and in many months were more scarce than burdens of two, three or more, leading to a bimodal distribution of worm counts (peaks at 0 and >1). This scarcity of single-larval worm infections could be accounted for a priori by a predominance of multiple infection. However, experimental infections of roach gave no evidence for the establishment of multiple worms, even when the host was challenged with multiple intermediate crustacean hosts, each multiply infected. A second hypothesis assumes that host manipulation following an initial single infection leads to an increased probability of subsequent infection (thus creating a contagious distribution). If manipulated fish are more likely to encounter infected first-intermediate hosts (through microhabitat change, increased ingestion, or both), then host manipulation could act as a powerful cause of aggregation. A number of scenarios based on contagious distribution models of aggregation are explored, contrasted with alternative compound Poisson models, and compared with the empirical data on L. intestinalis aggregation in their roach intermediate hosts. Our results indicate that parasite-induced host manipulation in this system can function simultaneously as both a consequence and a cause of parasite aggregation. This mutual interaction between host manipulation and parasite aggregation points to a set of ecological interactions that are easily missed in most experimental studies of either phenomenon. 相似文献
