Female preference for male song in acoustic insects is primarily influenced by call energy or power, but nonenergy features such as the relative timing of male calls may also be critical in preference. Preferences for leading calls, which may be a type of precedence effect, are an example of the latter factor. In various species, females preferentially orient toward the leading of two or more spatially separated calls presented in controlled playback experiments, however the importance of this effect on mate choice in actual choruses and natural populations is generally unknown. We studied the determinants of mate choice in reenacted choruses of the tettigoniid Ephippiger ephippiger, a species in which females prefer leading calls in two-choice experiments, and neighboring males adjust their relative call timing in a way that reduces the incidence of following calls. We found that mate choice, as indicated by the pattern of female settlement, largely reflects call rate and call constancy. But, we also found suggestions that female choice is influenced by the acoustic neighborhood in which a male sings, males in neighborhoods with more overall singing being preferred, and by a males incidence of leading calls relative to his neighbors. Although statistically inconclusive owing to few relevant samples, we note that the level of preference for leading calls observed in E. ephippiger choruses is comparable to that found in controlled playback experiments.  相似文献

Female grasshoppers of acoustically communicating species assume series of reproductive states that are associated with particular behaviours. Studies on laboratory populations of Chorthippus biguttulus (L.) revealed that females of this species lack the period of ‘passive copulatory readiness’, increase their attractiveness to males by sound production and mate multiple times before their first oviposition. In particular, female Ch. biguttulus display a period of ‘primary rejection’ after their imaginal moult during which they reject male mating attempts followed by a period of ‘active copulatory readiness’ in which they produce acoustic signals and may copulate with courting males. Female stridulation generally stimulated male mating activity and stridulating females attracted more male mating attempts than mute females in the same cage, indicating that males preferentially court females that signal ‘active copulatory readiness’. After receipt of a spermatophore, Ch. biguttulus females displayed periods of ‘secondary rejection’ followed by re-establishment of ‘active copulatory readiness’. Acoustic responses of females to male songs, an indicator of reproductive readiness, were significantly reduced until 2 days after mating and remained slightly reduced in comparison to pre-mating levels. Some females mated multiple times before their first oviposition and cycled between ‘secondary rejection’ and ‘active copulatory readiness’.  相似文献

In the present study, we tested the effect of song amplitude on intersexual relationships. To evaluate preferences and predispositions of female canaries for amplitude levels of male song, we conducted two experiments using both females raised in acoustic isolation and females raised in an aviary under 'normal' acoustic conditions. The songs used in both experiments followed the same pattern: one reactive phrase surrounded by two nonreactive phrases. The first experiment consisted of testing female preferences for weak, normal, or loud amplitudes of the reactive phrase (i.e. these reactive phrases provoke sexual stimulation in females). In a second experiment, we tested female preferences for weak, normal, or loud amplitudes of the nonreactive phrases. These two experiments allowed us to evaluate female preferences for intensity levels of reactive and nonreactive phrases. In the first experiment, all females significantly prefered loud and normal reactive phrases, whereas the second experiment showed that loud nonreactive phrases do not necessarily provoke more responses than other nonreactive phrases. Female canaries were, thus, more stimulated by the intensity level of a particular part of the song. Both females raised in acoustic isolation and in normal acoustic conditions responded in the same way. I tested predictions from ultimate hypotheses of why femalegreat snipe Gallinago media give loud calls when visiting leks,using observational data and playback experiments. One hypothesisis that calls might be used in female—female competitionfor popular males, either (1) in an aggressive context towarda specific female, or (2) toward females in general to defendthe male. It has also been suggested that female calls (3) may not have an adaptive function, the capability of vocalizingbeing explained as a correlated response to selection on malesinging. Further, calls might function as (4) a copulationsolicitation toward a specific male. Finally, calls might havea function in mate choice, either (5) in indirect mate choiceas a fertility advertisement to incite male fighting, or (6)in direct mate choice as a mate-sampling aid to provoke quality-revealing responses from males. Disproportionately many female calls wereuttered when no other females were present on a male's territoryand in territories of males without mating success, contradictinghypotheses 1 and 2. Female calls were not associated with copulation;calls generally occurred several days before copulations, contradictinghypotheses 4 and 5. Playback of female calls attracted malesand increased fighting among males, even if females were presentnearby, contradicting hypothesis 3. Males changed their ownsongs in response to playback, and the response was relatedto their mating success. Taken together, the results are onlyconsistent with one of the hypotheses considered—femalecalls may function as a mate-sampling aid used in direct matechoice.  相似文献

We report experimental results consistent with the hypothesis that constraints on the expression of male mating preferences affect breeder fitness, offspring viability and performance. If constraints on the expression of mating preferences are common, tests of fitness variation associated with mate preferences must eliminate as many constraints on mate preferences as possible. We tested whether male mate preferences influenced breeder fitness, offspring performance and viability in typically polygynous house mice, Mus domesticus, from a feral source population. Our ‘free mate choice’ trials not only eliminated female preferences, male-male and female-female competition, but also our best guesses of the traits mediating choosers' preferences. Males mated with their preferred (P) females sired more litters than males mated with their nonpreferred (NP) females. Offspring viability was significantly lower when males' reproduced with females they did not prefer compared with females they did prefer. Adult sons of males that mated with their P females were socially dominant to sons of males that mated with their NP females. Adult offspring from P pairings built better nests than offspring from NP pairings. The slope of the survivorship curve for P offspring was significantly higher than for NP offspring. These results showed (1) males' mate preferences affected their fitness, (2) males that mated with females they preferred produced more litters than males that mated with females they did not prefer, and (3) their offspring were significantly more viable and performed significantly better on standardized performance tests. This is the first demonstration of fitness benefits of male choice behaviour in a mammal species with typical paternal investment. Copyright 2003 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Mate selection can be stressful; time spent searching for mates can increase predation risk and/or decrease food consumption, resulting in elevated stress hormone levels. Both high predation risk and low food availability are often associated with increased variation in mate choice by females, but it is not clear whether stress hormone levels contribute to such variation in female behavior. We examined how the stress hormone corticosterone (CORT) affects female preferences for acoustic signals in the green treefrog, Hyla cinerea. Specifically, we assessed whether CORT administration affects female preferences for call rate — an acoustic feature that is typically under directional selection via mate choice by females in most anurans and other species that communicate using acoustic signals. Using a dual speaker playback paradigm, we show that females that were administered higher doses of CORT were less likely to choose male advertisement calls broadcast at high rates. Neither CORT dose nor level was related to the latency of female phonotactic responses, suggesting that elevated CORT does not influence the motivation to mate. Results were also not related to circulating sex steroids (i.e., progesterone, androgens or estradiol) that have traditionally been the focus of studies examining the hormonal basis for variation in female mate choice. Our results thus indicate that elevated CORT levels decrease the strength of female preferences for acoustic signals.  相似文献

While the presence of predators can influence female mate choice, few studies have investigated how females respond to quantitative variation in predation risk. In addition, we know little of how females respond to multiple, independent cues of risk. In this study, we investigated the effects of simulated predation risk on mate choice in túngara frogs, Physalaemus pustulosus, using the advertisement calls of predatory frogs, variation in ambient light, and simulated distance. Females showed aversion to conspecific calls associated with the calls of predators, and females were significantly less likely to travel perceived longer distances while the calls of predatory frogs were broadcast. In both the laboratory and field, females chose among potential mates significantly faster under higher light levels. Female responses to acoustic cues of predation risk were significantly influenced by light level, but decisions about travel distances were not. These results demonstrate that female choice is strongly influenced by perceived predation risk and that females can simultaneously evaluate quantitative variation in different cues of predation risk. The changes in search behavior and mate evaluation we demonstrate indicate that predation plays a strong role in limiting signal evolution and possibly reproductive isolation.  相似文献

A satisfactory understanding of the process of mate choice in many species of anurans requires that we know how sensitive females are to the variation in male calls under natural conditions and what is the timescale or ‘window’ over which females compare potential mates. In natural choruses, grey treefrog females may sit near calling males for many minutes before approaching a particular individual to mate, whereas in laboratory-based phonotaxis tests, they may approach a speaker within 30 s of exposure to broadcast calls. Females prefer long versus short calls. To estimate ‘assessment time’ of females in nature, we broadcast calls from four pairs of 360-degree speakers suspended within screen cages at four locations at the edge of a pond. One speaker per pair presented calls of constant duration while the other speaker shifted between broadcasts of calls that were longer or shorter than the constant duration call. The time period over which this change in call duration occurred differed between the four venues. Laboratory-based choice tests indicated that females preferred call sources with variable numbers of pulses to those with constant numbers of pulses when the former had more total pulses per time window. Accordingly, we assigned the probabilities of field captures at the different speakers based on the summed pulses from the constant and cycling speakers within the possible assessment windows. These probabilities, together with the numbers of females captured at the speaker array over the breeding season, indicated that the most likely assessment time is close to 2 min.  相似文献

Playback experiments using synthetic sounds indicatethat gravid females of the gray treefrogs (Hyla versicolor andH. chrysoscelis) and the green treefrog (H. cinerea) selectivelyrespond to sounds on the basis of physical properties that showinter-individual variation in the calls of conspecific males.Although the specificity is adequate to differentiate amongthe signals of many males, this potential for mate choice maynot be fully realized in acoustically complex situations suchas natural breeding aggregations. Female selectivity in H. cinereawas less precise in four-speaker experiments than in two-speakerexperiments. An analysis of female preferences with respectto a call property correlated with body size was only partiallysuccessful in predicting the size distribution of successfulmales in a natural population. Signals used for mate choice and receiver preferences are often assumed to coevolve in a lock-step fashion. However, sender-receiver coevolution can also be nonparallel: even if species differences in signals are mainly quantitative, females of some closely related species have qualitatively different preferences and underlying mechanisms. Two-alternative playback experiments using synthetic calls that differed in fine-scale temporal properties identified the receiver criteria in females of the treefrog Hyla chrysoscelis for comparison with female criteria in a cryptic tetraploid species (H. versicolor); detailed preference functions were also generated for both species based on natural patterns of variation in temporal properties. The species were similar in three respects: (1) pulses of constant frequency were as attractive as the frequency-modulated pulses typical of conspecific calls; (2) changes in preferences with temperature paralleled temperature-dependent changes in male calls; and (3) preference functions were unimodal, with weakly defined peaks estimated at values slightly higher than the estimated means in conspecific calls. There were also species differences: (1) preference function slopes were steeper in H. chrysoscelis than in H. versicolor; (2) preferences were more intensity independent in H. chrysoscelis than in H. versicolor; (3) a synergistic effect of differences in pulse rate and shape on preference strength occurred in H. versicolor but not in H. chrysoscelis; and (4) a preference for the pulse shape typical of conspecific calls was expressed at the species-typical pulse duration in H. versicolor but not in H. chrysoscelis. However, females of H. chrysoscelis did express a preference based on pulse shape when tested with longer-than-average pulses, suggesting a hypothesis that could account for some examples of nonparallel coevolution. Namely, preferences can be hidden or revealed depending on the direction of quantitative change in a signal property relative to the threshold for resolving differences in that property. The results of the experiments reported here also predict patterns of mate choice within and between contemporary populations. First, intraspecific mate choice in both species is expected to be strongly influenced by variation in temperature among calling males. Second, simultaneous differences in pulse rate and pulse shape are required for effective species discrimination by females of H. versicolor but not by females of H. chrysoscelis. Third, there is greater potential for sexual selection within populations and for discrimination against calls produced by males in other geographically remote populations in H. chrysoscelis than in H. versicolor.  相似文献

Male rhesus macaques sometimes give loud calls while thrusting or dismounting during multi-mount copulations.Hauser (1993) has proposed that these calls (1) impose a cost (increased risk of aggression) on calling males, and (2) increase callers' copulation frequencies, supporting the hypothesis that calls function as honest signals (handicaps) that females use to evaluate male quality during mate choice. This hypothesis was re-examined using data collected at Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico on 40 focal females and their 56 observed copulatory partners. Although attacks by males against copulating pairs were frequent, they were usually directed only against the female of the pair. Males that called were no more likely than silent males to suffer male escalated attack during or immediately following mount series. Male-female dyads in which the male called during copulation were significantly more likely than non-calling dyads to complete the most copulations observed for any given female. Males that called at least once were significantly more likely than non-calling males to complete at least one copulation with a peri-ovulatory female. A log-linear model revealed that male rank and calling were both associated with likelihood of experiencing at least one peri-ovulatory copulation. However, calling was not associated with reception of demonstrated female mate choice behaviors. Controlling for dominance rank, callers did not experience more female proximity maintenance than non-callers. Nor were callers' hip-grasps refused less frequently than non-callers' hip-grasps. These results cast doubt on the hypothesis that rhesus macaque copulation calls are costly, honest indicators of intrinsic male quality. A contrasting alternative hypothesis, that a male's copulatory calls advertise relative immunity from attacks against his copulatory partners, was not supported either. Thus, the function of rhesus macaque copulatory calls remains unknown. The unusually high rate of copulations amongHauser's (1993) subjects may explain the discrepancy in results, but it is unclear how high copulation rates would increase the cost of copulatory calling to males.  相似文献

The effect of stimulus call complexity and calling rate on the vocal responses of males and female mate choice was studied in Hyla microcephala in Panama. Males increased the number of notes in their calls in response to increases in stimulus call complexity during both playback of 1 to 8-note advertisement calls and during natural interactions. However, precise matching of the number of notes in stimuli and responses did not occur consistently. Males also increased calling rates if stimuli were presented above prestimulus rates. Two-stimulus choice experiments demonstrated that females prefer both higher calling rates and greater call complexity, indicating that the ways males change their vocal behavior during interactions increases their attractiveness to potential mates. Tests in which the relative intensity of a high and low rate stimulus was varied indicated that females prefer stimuli with higher total sound energy. In a natural chorus, it is likely that females simply approach males giving the most conspicuous calls.  相似文献

The potential for ornament evolution in response to sexual selection rests on the interaction between the permissive-ness or selectivity of female preferences and the constraints on male development of signaling related traits. We investigate the former by determining how latent female preferences either exaggerate the magnitude of current traits (I.e. Elaborations) or favor novel traits (I.e. Innovations). In tungara frogs, females prefer complex mating calls (whine-chucks) to simple calls (whine only). The whine is critical for mate recognition while the chuck further enhances the attractiveness of the call. Here we use a combina-tion of synthetic and natural stimuli to examine latent female preferences. Our results show that a diversity of stimuli, including conspecific and heterospecific calls as well as predator-produced and human-made sounds, increase the attractiveness of a call when added to a whine. These stimuli do not make simple calls more attractive than a whine-chuck, however. In rare cases we found stimuli that added to the whine decrease the attractiveness of the call. Overall, females show strong preferences for both elaborations and innovations of the chuck. We argue that the emancipation of these acoustic adornments from mate recognition allows such female permissiveness, and that male constraints on signal evolution are probably more important in explaining why males evolved their specific adornment. Experimentally probing latent female preferences for stimuli out of the species' range is a useful means to gain insights about the potential of female choice to influence signal evolution and thus the astounding diversity in male sexually-selected traits.  相似文献

Female mate-choice copying is a social learning phenomenon whereby a female's observation of a successful sexual interaction between a male and another female increases her likelihood of subsequently preferring that male. Although mate-choice copying has been documented in several vertebrate species, to our knowledge it has not yet been investigated in insects. Here, we investigated whether female mate-choice copying occurs in the fruit fly Drosophila serrata, a model system for the study of mate preferences and the sexual selection they generate. We used two complementary experiments in which focal females were given a choice between two males that differed in either their apparent (as determined visually by the focal female) or actual recent mating success. Mate-choice copying was evaluated by testing whether focal females mated more frequently with the ‘preferred’ male as opposed to the other male. In both experiments, however, we found no evidence for mate-choice copying. We discuss possible reasons for the apparent absence of mate-choice copying in this species.  相似文献

Sexual selection for divergent female preferences has been proposed to stimulate speciation. We tested this basic model by selecting for divergence in the courtship repertoire of the house fly Musca domestica L. Specifically, we subjected replicate strains to artificial selection for differentiation along the first two principal components of the phenotypic intercorrelation structure of five courtship traits. Highly significant differentiation in courtship repertoire resulted, and the magnitude of the selection response was highest along the first principal component (representing the ‘size’, or general intensity, of courtship). Videotaped matings of the crosses between divergent lines (i.e. males of one strain mating with females from a different line) showed that the selection responses in the intensities of male performances were due to shifts in female preferences. In particular, the males were able to accommodate the demands of ‘foreign’ females (as well as their own) in the no-choice situation (i.e. only one male and one female per mating chamber). In contrast to this plasticity of the males, the females were consistent in their differential resistance responses, regardless of the type of male involved in the courtship. Multiple-choice mate choice tests revealed significant reproductive isolation among some lines, although the effect was asymmetrical. The patterns of nonrandom mating were largely due to females from more genetically healthy lines (i.e. with overall high mating propensity) discriminating against males from populations with more inbreeding depression. We suggest that the inability to achieve true (symmetrical) reproductive isolation could have been due to low evolutionary potential in the ‘shape’ of courtship, as defined by the second principal component. Playback experiments were conducted to investigate interspecific discrimination of male loud calls in Sulawesi macaques. Loud calls of four macaque species living in Sulawesi (Macaca tonkeana, M. maurus, M. hecki, andM. nigrescens) and a control stimulus (an 8-sec frequency modulated sound) were played back to semi-free-ranging Tonkean macaques (M. tonkeana). A preliminary acoustic analysis indicated that the calls of these four species differ in some spectral and temporal features. In the playback experiments, Tonkean macaques responded in a similar manner to conspecific calls and calls of two other species,M. maurus andM. hecki. In contrast, animals responded more weakly to the call ofM. nigrescens and the control stimulus. Males responded more strongly than females to all stimuli, while females appeared to be more discriminating for species differences than males. Analyses on the acoustic features of loud calls suggested that high frequency, wide frequency range, and repetition of sound units at a high rate elicit quick responses from animals.  相似文献

In tree-hole frogs, Metaphrynella sundana, the fundamental call frequency varies widely between males. In field playback experiments, females strongly preferred calls from the lower range of frequencies found in the population. There was no correlation, however, between male size and call frequency, as is normally the case for anurans, so large males were not necessarily more attractive to females. Presence or absence of upper harmonics in the call had no effect on female choice. Tree holes with shallow air columns were more often used by calling frogs, and were presumably more common, than deep holes. Since male M. sundana actively exploit the resonant properties of tree holes for mate attraction, and high frequencies match comparatively shallow holes, the benefits of attaining acoustic matching probably select for high-frequency calls. In addition, males with high-frequency calls may be heard from a greater distance in the vicinity of torrent streams. Since the level of such noise in the forest varies in time and space, different frequencies may prove optimal in different contexts, thereby preserving the observed variation within the population. Having an ‘unattractive’ high-frequency call should be potentially beneficial only when calling males do not congregate, a condition that our data suggest is fulfilled in this system.  相似文献

Female sexual strategies affect male strategies and can play an important role in shaping mating systems. We investigated female sexual behaviour within five groups of grey-cheeked mangabeys in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and tested the hypothesis that females exhibit mate choice using as indications the prevalence of (1) females soliciting matings by presenting to males and (2) females refusing to mate with approaching males. In addition, we describe how these behaviours as well as grooming and copulation calls are distributed over high-ranking, low-ranking and migrating males and discuss these patterns with regard to trade-offs that could play a roll in female mate choice in multi-male groups. Females were promiscuous and initiated almost half of the matings, with both resident and migrating males. More than half of male mating approaches were refused by peak females. Female mate choice in this species may depend on individual female preferences, oestrus phase and male tactic.  相似文献

A fundamental goal of biology is to understand how new species arise and are maintained. Female mate choice is potentially critical to the speciation process: mate choice can prevent hybridization and thereby generate reproductive isolation between potentially interbreeding groups. Yet, in systems where hybridization occurs, mate choice by hybrid females might also play a key role in reproductive isolation by affecting hybrid fitness and contributing to patterns of gene flow between species. We evaluated whether hybrid mate choice behaviour could serve as such an isolating mechanism using spadefoot toad hybrids of Spea multiplicata and Spea bombifrons. We assessed the mate preferences of female hybrid spadefoot toads for sterile hybrid males vs. pure‐species males in two alternative habitat types in which spadefoots breed: deep or shallow water. We found that, in deep water, hybrid females preferred the calls of sterile hybrid males to those of S. multiplicata males. Thus, maladaptive hybrid mate preferences could serve as an isolating mechanism. However, in shallow water, the preference for hybrid male calls was not expressed. Moreover, hybrid females did not prefer hybrid calls to those of S. bombifrons in either environment. Because hybrid female mate choice was context‐dependent, its efficacy as a reproductive isolating mechanism will depend on both the environment in which females choose their mates as well as the relative frequencies of males in a given population. Thus, reproductive isolation between species, as well as habitat specific patterns of gene flow between species, might depend critically on the nature of hybrid mate preferences and the way in which they vary across environments.  相似文献
