The muscles of the male genitalia were studied for the first time in two species endemic to the Oriental zoogeographical region, namely Curetis bulis from the subfamily Curetinae (Lycaenidae) and Paralaxita damajanti from the tribe Abisarini (Riodinidae). Both taxa possess a common plan of musculature reflected in the positions of muscles m1, m2(10), m5(7), m7(6), m21, and m28. Two new autapomorphies of Curetis bulis were discovered: the splitting of m4 into two muscles and a shift of the attachment site of one of these muscles onto the dorsal area of the anellus. Apomorphic differences in the position of the genital muscles were found between Paralaxita damajanti and the previously studied Polycaena tamerlana from the family Riodinidae. A new synapomorphy between the latter two species, namely splitting of the aedeagus protractors m6(5), was also found.  相似文献

The tea green leafhopper, Empoasca vitis, is the most serious pest in plantations of tea, Camellia sinensis. Beyond physical damage to the leaves, tea yields may be affected if feeding stress causes physiological and biochemical changes in the tea plant, which affected the quality and flavor of the tea. Yet the effect of feeding stress, induced by E. vitis, is largely unknown. We measured the injury index and the physiological and biochemical responses of C. sinensis to stress by E. vitis feeding in a series of laboratory trials. Using 2-year-old C. sinensis plants, we tested the effects of leafhopper feeding at different densities—0, 5, 10, and 20 leafhoppers—and different durations of exposure—1, 4, 7, and 10 days—on potential changes in chlorophyll, tea polyphenols, nutrient content, activities of protective enzymes (peroxidase, POD; superoxide dismutase, SOD; and catalase, CAT), and the lipid peroxidation (MDA). We found that the injury indices for tea leaves increased continuously as the density of E. vitis increased in the same day, and simultaneously, as the time of leafhoppers damage increased, the injury indices for tea leaves also increased. Our results also indicated that feeding by E. vitis caused a considerable decline in chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll in tea leaves and soluble carbohydrate content, and an increase in tea polyphenols. Soluble protein content showed a direct increasing relationship with the increasing leafhopper density and the duration of exposure. Throughout the period of E. vitis exposure, there was highly significant difference in the activities of protective enzymes and MDA content. Additionally, POD, SOD, and CAT activities in tea leaves were elevated significantly with the increase of leafhopper density. Lipid peroxidation (MDA) content also increased after the exposure to leafhopper feeding. Overall, our results indicate that although C. sinensis displays a certain level of tolerance to E. vitis feeding stress, higher density of leafhoppers, and longer exposure duration, can cause severe damage to tea leaves and also a decline in plant defense of tea, so as to affect the tea quality.  相似文献

Within Anseriformes, waterfowl (ducks, geese, and swans) exhibit three specialized feeding modes that are distinctive among Aves: filter-feeding with fine and dense keratinous lamellae on a flat, mediolaterally expanded bill; cropping or grazing vegetation with large and robust lamellae with a dorsoventrally expanded bill; and sharp lamellae associated with a narrow bill used in acquiring mixed invertebrates and fish underwater mainly by grasping. Here we assess morphometric variation in cranial and hyolingual structures as well as hyolingual myology in a diverse sample of Anatidae to explore the relationship of tongue variation and feeding mode. Phylogenetically informed principal component analysis (phyl.PCA) of cranial-lingual measurements for 67 extant and two extinct anatids recovers grazers and filter-feeding taxa in largely distinct areas of morphospace, while underwater graspers and other mixed feeders show less distinct clustering. The relationship between morphometric differences in skeletal features and muscular variation was further explored through a reassessment of hyolingual musculature enabled by contrast-enhanced X-ray computed tomography (CT) imagery acquired from three exemplar species (Branta canadensis, Chen caerulescens, and Aythya americana) with distinctive ecologies and morphologies of the bony hyoid. Data for these duck and geese exemplars reveal further significant, and previously unstudied, morphological differences between filter-feeding and grazing species. Grazers have a larger hyolingual apparatus with highly-developed extrinsic hyoid muscles; while filter-feeding species are characterized by relatively more diminutive extrinsic hyoid muscles and larger intrinsic hyoid muscles. The feeding modes of two extinct taxa (i.e., Presbyornis and Thambetochen) were also estimated from morphometric data. The results indicate a derived terrestrial browsing or grazing ecology for Thambetochen but do not unequivocally support a specialized filter-feeding ecology for Presbyornis, which is recovered with mixed feeders including swans. The combination of detailed, CT-mediated acquisition of fine muscular anatomy with morphometric approaches shows promise for illuminating form–function relationships in extant taxa more generally.  相似文献

The structure of the ovipositor sclerites and muscles was studied in the tephritid fly Oxyna parietina (Linnaeus, 1758) inducing galls on the stems of Artemisia vulgaris. Adaptations of the ovipositor structure associated with changes of the oviposition substrate due to new larval habits are analyzed. The ovipositor muscles of Oxyna parietina are compared to those of Campiglossa. The genera Oxyna Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 and Campiglossa Rondani, 1870 belong to the same genus-group of Tephritini, but differ in their host associations and oviposition habits: the larvae of Campiglossa plantaginis (Haliday, 1833) develop in the capitula of Aster tripolium and other asters (Asteraceae). The ovipositor sclerites and muscles are similar in the two genera. Progression of hemolymph into the membranous sheath of the ovipositor and protraction of the aculeus are necessary conditions for laying eggs into the capitula of Asteraceae (Campiglossa plantaginis), as well as for insertion of eggs into the axils of Artemisia leaves (Oxyna parietina). The most significant characters of Oxyna and Campiglossa include the presence of the hyaline apodeme and associated muscles MVM 6 and MVM 7 (instead of the median apodeme in Urophora). Thus, in other tephritid flies similarity in the structure of the ovipositor muscles may reflect similar morphofunctional adaptations to laying eggs into similar substrates, but similarity of Campiglossa and Oxyna in the structure of the ovipositor muscles is due to their close relations.  相似文献

The structure of the abdominal and pregenital segments and genitalia of males was studied in Pyrellia rapax (Harris, 1780) and Musca autumnalis De Geer, 1776 (Muscidae, Muscini). The musculature of these species is compared with that in Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 (Muscidae) and Scathophaga stercoraria (Linnaeus, 1758) (Scathophagidae), previously investigated by O.G. Ovtshinnikova. Morphological analysis of sclerites and muscles of abdominal and pregenital segments and genitalia of males in Pyrellia rapax, Musca autumnalis, and M. domestica demonstrates processes of reduction in Musca as compared with P. rapax and S. stercoraria.  相似文献

Many bees collect pollen by grasping the anthers of a flower and vibrating their flight muscles at high frequencies—a behavior termed sonication, or buzz-pollination. Here we compare buzz-pollination on Solanum lycopersicum (cherry tomatoes) by two bees that fill similar niches on different continents—in Australia, Amegilla murrayensis (blue-banded bee), and in North America, Bombus impatiens (bumblebee). We collected audio recordings of buzz-pollination and quantified the frequency and length of buzzes, as well as the total time spent per flower. We found that A. murrayensis buzzes at significantly higher frequencies (~350 Hz) than B. impatiens (~240 Hz) and flaps its wings at higher frequencies during flight. There was no difference in the length of a single buzz, but A. murrayensis spent less time on each flower, as B. impatiens buzzed the flower several times before departing, whereas A. murrayensis typically buzzed the flower only once. High-speed videos of A. murrayensis during buzz-pollination revealed that its physical interaction with the flower differs markedly from the mechanism described for Bombus and other bees previously examined. Rather than grasping the anther cone with its mandibles and shaking, A. murrayensis taps the anther cone with its head at the high buzzing frequencies generated by its flight muscles. This unique behavior, combined with its higher buzzing frequency and reduced flower visit duration, suggests that A. murrayensis may be able to extract pollen more quickly than B. impatiens, and points to the need for further studies directly comparing the pollination effectiveness of these species.  相似文献

A rust fungus was found on the leaves of Euphorbia helioscopia during a field study in Pakistan. Previously, Melampsora euphorbiae, M. euphorbiae-gerardianae and M. helioscopiae have been reported on E. helioscopia, the first two of which are also known from Pakistan. Morphological observations of the newly collected rust samples detected some differences from the previously described Melampsora species on E. helioscopia. The molecular analysis of the ITS and LSU sequences also detected that the rust is different from the previously reported rusts described from E. helioscopia. Based on both morphological comparisons and sequence analysis, the rust is described here as M. pakistanica sp. nov. This species could have potential as a bio-control agent against its host plant—E. helioscopia—which is a weed of wheat fields in Pakistan and elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

The muscles of the male abdomen and genitalia of Micropezidae were studied for the first time by the example of Neria commutata (Czerny, 1930). Based on analysis of the sclerites and musculature of the male genitalia of Micropezidae as compared to those of the previously studied Acalyptratae and Aschiza, we revealed several apomorphies of this group. The hypandrial complex is characterized by the presence of the phallic retractors and protractors M1 and M2, and the epandrial complex, by the presence of muscles M3 of the subepandrial sclerite, muscles M4 of the surstyli, muscles M7 of the cerci, and also the tergosternal muscles M5; all these muscles correspond to the ground plan of Cyclorrhapha. The following characters are considered apomorphic: the splitting of intersegmental sternal muscles ISM5–6 into 4 pairs that ensure the functioning of the forcipate appendages of sternite V; development of syntergosternite VII and reduction of muscles ISM6–7; the splitting of muscles M3 of the subepandrial sclerite into 4 pairs, enhancing the function of this sclerite; the appearance of pregonites with the associated muscles M42, which probably occurred independently several times in the evolution of different groups of Cyclorrhapha; asymmetry of syntergosternites VII and VIII and their muscles. The sclerites and muscles of the epandrium and hypandrium are characterized by complete symmetry.  相似文献

The results of the studies on feeding of zander (Sander lucioperca) underyearlings in the Rybinsk Reservoir in 2008-2010 and 2012 are presented. The study revealed that, at feeding on plankton, the assemblage of the organisms consumed by juvenile zander has not been changed compared to 1950. The underyearlings prefer to feed on large zooplankters—Daphnia longispina, Leptodora kindtii, and Bythotrephes longimanus—along with copepods. At some sampling stations, the species of macrozoobenthos were included in the young zander food. The piscine component of zander food was dominated by underyearlings of Azov-Black sea tyulka (Clupeonella cultriventris); the fries of perch (Perca fluviatilis) and cyprinids (Cyprinidae) were less important. The feeding strategy of zander underyearlings was unchanged in various years. At turning to predatory feeding, not only the ratio of sizes of predator versus prey but also the proportion of the densities of their populations plays an important role.  相似文献

Intertidal mudflats are unique, highly productive ecosystems. Boleophthalmus pectinirostris and Periophthalmus magnuspinnatus are common fish species that are distributed in the intertidal mudflats of the Yangtze Estuary in China. They perform important ecological functions and have different feeding strategies. Herein, we studied the intestinal microbial diversity and structure of wild B. pectinirostris and P. magnuspinnatus with different sexes and feeding strategies during their breeding season. Gut samples of B. pectinirostris and P. magnuspinnatus individuals (female:male ratio?=?1:1) were collected and subjected to high-throughput DNA sequencing. The results showed Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylum in all the four sample groups: 73.5% in the males and 52.6% in the females of B. pectinirostris and 40.2% in the males and 40.9% in the females of P. magnuspinnatus. Aeromonas, Shewanella, Halomonas, and Acinetobacter of the phylum Proteobacteria were dominant genera in all the sample groups and accounted for 62.13% of the ten dominant genera. The diversity of the intestinal microflora in the omnivorous P. magnuspinnatus was significantly higher (P?<?0.05) than that in the herbivorous B. pectinirostris. Beta diversity, including PCoA and UPGMA of unweighted UniFrac distances, showed that B. pectinirostris samples were clustered together, and P. magnuspinnatus samples were clustered together, implying the effect of the feeding habits on the microbial community structure is more considerable than that of sex.  相似文献

The structures of cell wall anionic carbohydrate-containing polymers in Streptomyces melanosporofaciens VKM Ac-1864T and phylogenetically close organisms—S. hygroscopicus subsp. hygroscopicus VKM Ac-831T, S. violaceusniger VKM Ac-583T, S. endus VKM Ac-1331T, S. endus VKM Ac-129, and S. rutgersensis subsp. castelarensis VKM Ac-832T—have been comparatively studied by chemical and NMR spectroscopic methods. The natural polymer of a new, previously unknown structure, Kdn (3-deoxy-D-glycero-D-galacto-non-2-ulopyranosonic acid) with β-galactose residues at C-9, has been found in the cell walls of all the strains under study. The cell walls of all the studied organisms contain three teichoic acids (TA): a predominant TA (1,3-poly(glycerol phosphate) with N-acetylated α-glucosaminyl substitutes by C-2 of glycerol, and minor TAs, 1,3-and 2,3-poly(glycerol phosphate) polymers without substitution. Their chains have O-acetyl and O-lysyl groups. Microorganisms of the above-mentioned species differ in the number of α-glucosaminyl substitutes and in the degree of their acetylation in the predominant teichoic acid.  相似文献

Tobacco smoke contains various toxic heavy metals that individuals are exposed to when they smoke. Despite the presence of heavy metals in tobacco smoke, the relationship between smoking and the accumulation of toxic metals in pregnant women after long-term exposure remains under discussion. We examined the association between long-term exposure to tobacco smoke and the accumulation of toxic metals in the hair of female participants. Our study recruited 252 women from the Shanxi and Hebei provinces of Northern China; these participants were self-reported non-active smokers, and had previously delivered healthy babies without birth defects. Scalp hair was collected and analyzed for nicotine and cotinine and five potentially toxic metals (specifically, silver, chromium, cadmium, mercury, and lead). Our results showed significant positive correlations between cotinine and four metals, including silver (r?=?0.369, p?<?0.001), cadmium (r?=?0.185, p?<?0.01), mercury (r?=?0.161, p?<?0.05), and lead (r?=?0.243, p?<?0.001). Significant positive correlations were also found between nicotine and three metals—specifically silver (r?=?0.331, p?<?0.001), cadmium (r?=?0.176, p?<?0.01), and lead (r?=?0.316, p?<?0.001). A logistic regression model showed significant associations between cotinine and potentially toxic metals including mercury, silver, and lead (with or without adjusting for potential confounders). We thus conclude that long-term passive smoking could potentially increase the exposure level of toxic metals including lead, silver, and mercury in our study, which are especially harmful for pregnant women and their unborn fetus.  相似文献

Chagas disease, which manifests as cardiomyopathy and severe gastrointestinal dysfunction, is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a vector-borne parasite. In California, the vector Triatoma protracta frequently colonizes woodrat (Neotoma spp.) lodges, but may also invade nearby residences, feeding upon humans and creating the dual risk of bite-induced anaphylaxis and T. cruzi transmission. Our research aimed to assess T. cruzi presence in woodrats in a previously unstudied northern California area, statistically evaluate woodrat microhabitat use with respect to vegetation parameters, and provide guidance for habitat modifications to mitigate public health risks associated with Tr. protracta exposure. Blood samples from big-eared woodrats (N. macrotis) trapped on rural private properties yielded a T. cruzi prevalence of 14.3%. Microhabitat analyses suggest that modifying vegetation to reduce understory density within a 40 meter radius of human residences might minimize woodrat lodge construction within this buffer area, potentially decreasing human exposure to Tr. protracta.  相似文献

Morphological and quantitative characteristics of the growth variability of two Parvancorina species were analyzed based on new abundant material from the Vendian of the White Sea. Growth variability in this problematic taxon appears to be wider than previously suggested. We found allometric growth in the White Sea population of P. minchami Glaessner, 1958, in contrast to isometric growth in Australian representatives of the species. Another White Sea species, P. sagitta Ivantsov, 2004, shows gradual formation of anchor-shaped structure in juveniles. Based on Australian material, it was previously believed that this structure did not change during ontogeny. These two distinctive features together with a strong variability of age-related measurements distinguish Parvancorina from other early arthropods (Scania, Primicaris), and cast doubt on the growth pattern as an argument in favor of the arthropodan nature of Parvancorina.  相似文献

Results of comparative analysis of specific features of morphology of larval lanternfishes of the Indo-Pacific genus Triphoturus based on materials from the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean, northwestern Pacific, South China Sea, and the western part of the Indian Ocean, as well as on published data, are provided. Noticeable differences are shown in specific features of pigmentation of larval T. nigrescens (sensu Hulley, 1986) from different parts of the vast range of this species, that may be accounted for by its individual and/or geographic variation and by the collective pattern of this taxon. It is stated that it is necessary to use genetic data for the verification of the taxonomic status of the representatives of the genus. Morphological evidence in favor of the species isolation of T. oculeum and T. microchir based on larval materials is presented. The presence of three morphologically different forms of larval Triphoturus from the eastern Pacific differing in the pattern of body pigmentation that are identified with three nominal species of the genus Triphoturus—T. nigrescens, T. mexicanus, and T. oculeum—is confirmed. The study of specific features of distribution of larvae of these species in southeastern waters of the Pacific Ocean based on our own and published materials revealed the presence of larval T. mexicanus and T. oculeum off Peru, which is supported by data on the presence of adult individuals of both species here.  相似文献

The mirid bug Apolygus lucorum (Meyer-Dür) (Heteroptera: Miridae) is a severe pest of cotton and other crops in China. The feeding preferences of this pest are unclear due to its frequent movement among different host plants and the inconspicuous signs of its feeding. Here, we present results of a field trial that used direct observation of bug densities and a PCR-based molecular detection assay to detect plant DNA in bugs to explore relationships between A. lucorum population abundance and its feeding preference between two host plants, Humulus scandens (Loureiro) Merrill and Medicago sativa L. The field-plot samples showed that A. lucorum adults generally prefer flowering host plants. Its density was significantly higher on flowering H. scandens than on seedlings of M. sativa, and a similarly higher bug density was observed on flowering M. sativa than on seedlings of H. scandens. In the laboratory, we designed two pairs of species-specific primers targeting the trnL-F region for H. scandens and M. sativa, respectively. The detectability of plant DNA generally decreased with time post-feeding, and the half-life of plant DNA detection (DS50) in the gut was estimated as 6.26 h for H. scandens and 3.79 h for M. sativa with significant differences between each other. In mirid bugs exposed to seedlings of H. scandens and flowering M. sativa, the detection rate of M. sativa DNA was significantly higher than that of H. scandens. Meanwhile, in mirid bugs exposed to seedlings of M. sativa and flowering H. scandens, a significantly higher detection rate of H. scandens DNA was found. We developed a useful tool to detect the remaining plant food species specifically from the gut of A. lucorum in the current study. We provided direct evidence of its feeding preference between H. scandens and M. sativa at different growth stages, which strongly supported a positive correlation between population abundance and feeding preference of A. lucorum on different plants under field conditions. The findings provide new insights into the understanding of A. lucorum’s feeding preference, and are helpful for developing the strategies to control this pest.  相似文献

The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley) and Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV), serious threats to economic crops and garden plants, have invaded southern China and widely infected Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Whether an inter-species connection has facilitated the invasion process is unclear. In this study the interaction between P. solenopsis and H. rosa-sinensis infected with CLCuMV was investigated in the laboratory. We observed that 1st and 2nd instar nymphs of P. solenopsis preferred to feed on healthy H. rosa-sinensis leaves, whereas 3rd instar nymphs and female adults had no preference between healthy and virus-infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves. The developmental time of each P. solenopsis developmental stage increased significantly after feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves (p < 0.05). In particular, the development time for 2nd instar female and male nymphs and 3rd instar female nymphs increased by approximately twofold. The generation time of female mealybugs increased from 25.84 d on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 32.12 d when feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis, and the survival rate decreased from 71.04 % on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 5.80 % on infected plants. Nymph survival was most affected by feeding on infected plants. Additionally, the fecundity of female mealybugs feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis decreased by 47.8 %. Thus, feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis significantly decreased the biological fitness and invading and colonizing abilities of P. solenopsis.  相似文献

In this study, the localization of fluorescent protein (FP) was characterized in the muscles of four species and two subspecies of eels Anguilla anguilla, A. australis, A. bicolor bicolor (b.), A. bicolor pacifica (p.) and A. mossambica in addition to the previously reported A. japonica. The open reading frame of each eel FP was 417 bp encoding 139 amino acid residues. The deduced amino acid sequences among the four species and two subspecies exhibited 91.4–100% identity, and belonged to the fatty-acid-binding protein (FABP) family. The gene structure of eel FPs in A. japonica, A. anguilla, A. australis, A. bicolor b., A. bicolor p. and A. mossambica have four exons and three introns, and were common to that of FABP family. The apo eel FPs expressed by Escherichia coli with recombinant eel FP genes were analysed for the fluorescent properties in the presence of bilirubin. The excitation and emission spectra of holo eel FPs had the maximum wavelengths of 490–496 and 527–530 nm, respectively. The holo eel FPs indicated that the fluorescent intensities were stronger in A. japonica and A. bicolor than in A. mossambica, A. australis and A. anguilla. The comparison of amino acid sequences revealed two common substitutions in A. mossambica, A. australis and A. anguilla with weak fluorescent intensity.  相似文献
