Bristlemouths of the genus Cyclothone are currently regarded as the most abundant vertebrates on Earth. The fossil record seems to suggest that these fishes diversified during the Miocene in the Pacific Ocean, but there is no evidence of their presence in the Miocene of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean basin. A new bristlemouth, Cyclothone gaudanti sp. nov. (Teleostei, Stomiiformes, Gonostomatidae), is described herein based on 16 specimens from the Upper Miocene Makrilia Formation (late Tortonian of Crete, Greece). The small sized species is characterized by light pigmentation, 30–31 (14–15 + 15–16) vertebrae, dorsal fin with 10–13 rays, anal fin with 10–14 rays, premaxilla bearing seven closely spaced teeth, maxilla with 42–55 teeth, epipleurals, and autogenous parhypural. The presence of epipleurals appears to be unique of this Miocene species, and the re-establishment of this ancestral character state may be possibly interpreted as related to a phylogenetic character reversal. Morphological and paleoecological considerations suggest that this species possibly inhabited the upper mesopelagic layer, at depths ranging from 2–300 and 500 meters.  相似文献

A portion of mitochondrially encoded 12S and 16S ribosomal RNA genes were sequenced from 13 currently recognized species of the midwater deep-sea fish genusCyclothone (Stomiiformes: Gonostomatidae) and three gonostomatid outgroup taxa. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods were performed on unambiguously aligned, combined sequences (803 bp) of the two genes. The resultant tree topologies from the two methods were congruent, being robust and supported by various tree statistics, enabling the evolutionary history ofCyclothone to be described in detail. The molecular phylogeny demonstrated striking inconsistencies with previously proposed “natural groups”, although the latter could be confidently refuted by the molecular data. The most significant characteristic of the evolutionary history ofCyclothone was the independent acquisition of an apomorphic depth habitat from the relatively ancestral, lower mesopelagic habitat, by each of three major distinct lineages that had diverged earlier in their evolution. Moreover, such macroevolutionary habitat shifts had been necessarily accompanied by morphological and ecological novelties, presumably originating from paedomorphosis. Repeated evolution of such changes strongly suggests ontogenetic plasticity inCyclothone which could enable these fishes to acquire larval-like, simple organization of body structure. Such a body plan could help them subsist in food-poor surroundings and regulate reproductive variables that take advantage of increasing larval survival toward shallower depths. Recent speciation events, on the contrary, have produced contemporary sister species of allopatric (or microallopatric) distributions, but few morphological and ecological differences. Even if remarkable miniaturization has occurred, such as in the Mediterranean endemicC. pygmaea, it had to have been a simple truncation of ancestral species' ontogeny without attendance of any discernible paedomorphic features. On the basis of the fossil record, geological history of the Mediterranean region, and ectotherm molecular divergence rate, it was estimated thatCyclothone radiation had already started in the early-middle Miocene (17–20 million years ago).  相似文献

New species of the genera Gymnothorax (fam. Muraenidae) and Parapercis (fam. Mugiloididae) are described from coastal waters of central Vietnam. G. emmae sp. n. is a common species all along the coast from the Van Phong Bay to the Phan Thiet Bay and differs from other species of this genus in characters of coloration, dentition, and the vertebral formula. P. bicoloripes sp. n. is common in the Phan Thiet Bay and is also know from one specimen from the Nha Trang Bay; from other species of the genus, it differs in coloration and meristic characters.  相似文献

Feeding habits and trophic levels of Mediterranean fish   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The estimation of fractional trophic levels(TROPHs) is essential for the management offisheries resources as well as for quantifyingthe ecosystem effects of fishing. We gatheredall available information concerning thefeeding habits of 332 fish stocks, belonging to146 species, 59 families and 21 orders,throughout the Mediterranean Sea, and estimatedtheir TROPH values. The latter ranged from 2.0to 4.5 and the following functional trophicgroups were identified: (a) pure herbivores (TROPH = 2.0–2.1, mean = 2.02, SD = 0.03),which were very rare and represented by Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus andSarpa salpa, all of which feed on red,brown, green and blue-green algae; (b)omnivores with a preference for vegetablematerial (2.1 < TROPH < 2.9, mean = 2.5,SD = 0.12), but feeding on other prey, such assponges, hydrozoans, anthozoans, polychaetes,ostracods, isopods, amphipods and copepods. This type of omnivore was very rare among thecases reviewed; (c) omnivores with a preferencefor animal material (2.9 < TROPH < 3.7,mean = 3.4, SD = 0.19) feeding on a wide variety ofprey (e.g., algae, foraminifera, brachyurans,balanoids, ascidians, amphipods,appendicularians, annelids, isopods,gastropods, cnidarians, ophiurids, polychaetes,cladocerans, mysids, euphausids, fish larvae,cephalopods). They were the most numerous andwere mainly represented by species of thefamilies Blenniidae, Bothidae, Centracanthidae,Gobiidae, Labridae, Lotidae, Macrouridae,Mullidae, Ophidiidae, Soleidae, Triglidaeand Engraulidae; and (d) carnivores witha preference for large decapods, cephalopodsand fish (3.7 < TROPH < 4.5). They werethe next most abundant group among the casesreviewed. They were mainly represented byspecies of the families Dalatiidae, Lophiidae,Scombridae, Scyliorhinidae, Synodontidae,Torpedinidae, Merlucciidae, Xiphiidae andZeidae. Synopsis Stomach content data from 32 species of Japanese butterflyfishes of the family Chaetodontidae were used to classify them into feeding groups and to determine their important food resources. Four major feeding groups were distinguished: (1) obligative coral feeders which prey exclusively or mostly on Scleractinian corals, (2) facultative coral feeders that take both corals and other benthic organisms, (3) noncoralline invertebrate feeders which consume benthic invertebrates other than corals, and (4) zooplankton feeders. Ten species representing 31% of the butterflyfishes belong to the first category. The second and third categories include 13 (41%) and 8 (25%) species, respectively. The fourth category is represented by only one species which picks individual zooplankters, especially calanoid copepods, in midwater above the reefs. Facultative coral feeders consumed varying quantities of scleractinians (from 2 to 74% of food volume), along with a variety of benthic organisms including algae, alcyonarians, sea anemones, sedentary polychaetes, sponges, hydroids, etc. Noncoralline invertebrate feeders, on the other hand, tend to have low diversified diets, predominated by one prey item such as sea anemones, zoanthideans, polychaetes, or colonial ascidians. These dietary data suggest that scleractinian corals are the most important food resource for the Japanese butterflyfishes, and next important are sea anemones, sedentary polychaetes, alcyonarians, and algae.  相似文献

根据产自广西南宁盆地渐新世早-中期的鳅科鱼类眼下刺化石建立了鳅属新种:南宁鳅+Cobitis nanningensis sp.nov.。眼下刺长1.8~3.0 mm,粗细适中,刺二分叉,侧后突较中后突短而细,长度约为中后突长的1/3,侧突发育。这些眼下刺与德国晚渐新世的+Cobitis primigenus最为相似,但又以侧突更为发育而与之区别。这是迄今最早的鳅科化石记录,为了解早期鳅科鱼类的分布和眼下刺的形态特征提供了有益证据。南宁鳅及德国晚渐新世的+C.primigenus揭示,渐新世时期鳅科鱼类已广布于欧亚大陆。  相似文献

A new pearleye species of the alepisauroid family Scopelarchidae, Scopelarchoides neamticus sp. nov., is described herein based on two specimens from the Oligocene Lower Dysodilic Shales Formation, cropping out in the Pietricica Mountain, Romanian Eastern Carpathians. The new species described herein exhibits a unique combination of features (including head length about 25% of SL; coracoid remarkably expanded; both preorbital and postorbital lengths larger than orbit diameter; 50 or 51 vertebrae; dorsal fin with nine or ten rays; anal-fin with 28 rays; length of anal fin base about 30% of SL; preanal distance almost 60% of SL; pelvic fin insertion located just under the second dorsal fin ray; pectoral fins only slightly longer than pelvic fins; caudal fin with 19 principal rays plus 14 upper and 13 lower procurrent rays) that justifies its recognition as a new species of the genus Scopelarchoides. Both morphological and meristic features suggest a certain degree of similarity between S. neamticus sp. nov. and the extant species Scopelarchoides signifer. The fossils of the new Oligocene species described herein represent the oldest known skeletal record of Scopelarchidae.  相似文献

The hearts of 29 species of macrourid teleosts were examined in this study. For the one species for which a length range was available ( Coryphaenoides (C.) rupestris ), the heart weight as a percentage of body weight was 0·059. This is similar to values for relatively inactive fish. The atrial myocardium was reduced and had only a sparse trabecular network. In some species it was surrounded by a highly developed epicardium, but in others there was interstitial connective tissue in the myocardium that may serve to strengthen this chamber. The ventricle was entirely spongy, and all species lacked an outer compact layer of myocardium and associated coronary vasculature. All the ventricles were sac-like in form. The bulbus arteriosus was highly complex, and in its proximal portion there was an endothelially-lined, inner tube surrounded by a spongy network of blood-filled spaces, outside which was an outer compact layer of smooth muscle and elastica. These features of the bulbus may prevent backflow of blood after ventricular systole. The endothelial cells lining the bulbus were usually PAS-positive and in some species contained acid mucopolysaccharides.  相似文献

The stomachs of 464 speckled guitarfish Rhinobatos glaucostigma were sampled from the south‐eastern Gulf of California (GC) to determine diet composition. Numerical indices and prey‐specific index of relative importance (%IPSIR) were used to determine the feeding strategy of the species. An analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) was used to determine differences in diet with respect to sex, season (dry or rainy) and maturity stages (immature or mature). The diversity and niche breadth (by sex, season and maturity) and a general trophic level were determined. The overall diet was dominated by shrimps (%IPSIR = 43·47), amphipods (%IPSIR = 18·89) and crabs (%IPSIR = 18·07). ANOSIM demonstrated differences in the diet by maturity and season, but not by sex. Rainy and dry season diets were dominated by shrimps and amphipods, respectively. Immature specimens fed mainly on amphipods, whereas mature fish preferred shrimps and crabs. Rhinobatos glaucostigma showed a narrow niche breadth with an intermediary trophic level (TL = 3·72) and can be considered as a secondary consumer in the soft‐bottom demersal community of the south‐east GC. Understanding the feeding habits and trophic level of R. glaucostigma is vital to help identify the segments of the population vulnerable to overfishing by artisanal and industrial fisheries, and to aid in conservation and management of this elasmobranch.  相似文献

A presumed XY chromosome pair is described fromt estis squashes from the mesopelagic deep-sea fish Bathylagus wesethi, whose 2N chromosome number was determined as 34-XY. Although the metacentric X-chromosome is the largest in the entire compliment, the Y is the smallest and only acrocentric element. The positive heteropycnosis of the sex elements was not easily distinguishable in the nuclei of first meiotic prophase. Tetraploid nuclei were observed in peripheral supporting cells of the testis. The genus Erythrinus belongs to the family Erythrinidae, a neotropical fish group. This genus contains only two described species, Erythrinus erythrinus being the most widely distributed in South America. Six samples of this species from five distinct Brazilian localities and one from Argentina were studied cytogenetically. Four groups were identified on the basis of their chromosomal features. Group A comprises three samples, all with 2n = 54 chromosomes, a very similar karyotypic structure, and the absence of chromosome differentiation between males and females. One sample bears up to four supernumerary microchromosomes, which look like 'double minute chromosomes' in appearance. Groups B-D comprise the three remaining samples, all sharing an X(1)X(1)X(2)X(2)/X(1)X(2)Y sex chromosome system. Group B shows 2n = 54/53 chromosomes in females and males, respectively, and also shows up to three supernumerary microchromosomes. Groups C and D show 2n=52/51 chromosomes in females and males, respectively, but differ in the number of metacentric, subtelocentric, and acrocentric chromosomes. In these three groups (B-D), the Y is a metacentric chromosome clearly identified as the largest in the complement. The present results offer clear evidence that local samples of E. erythrinus retain exclusive and fixed chromosomal features, indicating that this species may represent a species complex.  相似文献

The Magellan region is a unique peri-Antarctic ecosystem due to its geographical position. However, the knowledge about the distribution and feeding ecology of fish larvae is scarce. Since this area is characterized by low phytoplankton biomass, we hypothesize that marine fish larvae display different foraging tactics in order to reduce diet overlap. During austral spring 2009–2010, two oceanographic cruises were carried out along southern Patagonia (50–56°S). Larval fish distribution and feeding of the two most widely distributed species were studied, the smelt Bathylagichthys parini (Bathylagidae) and black southern cod Patagonotothen tessellata (Nototheniidae). Larvae of B. parini showed a lower increase in the mouth gape at size, primarily feeding during daytime (higher feeding incidence during the day) mostly on nonmotile prey (invertebrate and copepod eggs, appendicularian fecal pellets, diatoms). They showed no increase in feeding success (number, total volume of prey per gut and prey width) with increasing larval size, and the niche breadth was independent of larval size. Larvae of P. tessellata showed a large mouth gape at size, which may partially explain the predation on motile prey like large calanoid copepods (C. simillimus) and copepodites. They are nocturnal feeders (higher feeding incidence during night) and are exclusively carnivorous, feeding on larger prey as the larvae grow. Nonetheless, niche breadth was independent of larval size. Diet overlap was important only in individuals with smaller mouth gape (<890 μm) and diminished as larvae (and correspondingly their jaw) grow. In conclusion, in the peri-Antarctic Magellan region, fish larvae of two species display different foraging tactics, reducing their trophic overlap throughout their development.  相似文献

Thirty-one gyrodactylid species from five families of freshwater fish were examined and variable region V4 of the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA gene and ribosomal RNA internal transcribed spacers ITS1 and ITS2 were sequenced. Both the V4 region and spacers ITS1 and ITS2 proved useful for gyrodactylid diagnosis. Sequences of these fragments exhibited interspecific variations and allowed clear determination at the species level. In some cases, the length of the ITS1 PCR fragment provided useful genetic markers. Species that yielded a short ITS1 fragment also showed distinct groupings in ITS2 and V4 sequences that were markedly different to sequences from species that contain a long ITS1. Repetitive sequences located in the ITS1 of Gyrodactylus gobii and Gyrodactylus vimbi accounted for some of the variations in length of PCR products. There was no evidence for intraspecific variation within these regions and short tandem repeats were not found in the other species studied. The number of polymorphic and intraspecific variations in nucleic acid sequences was low, therefore these variations did not affect species determination of gyrodactylids. Minor differences in the sequences between Western and Eastern European populations were detected for Gyrodactylus salaris/Gyrodactylus thymalli, Gyrodactylus teuchis and Gyrodactylus truttae, but these do not affect species diagnosis based on ribosomal DNA sequence. These results confirm the utility of both variable region V4 and the ITS as molecular markers for Gyrodactylus species.  相似文献

Four genera of the teleost family Stomiidae, the loosejaw dragonfishes, possess accessory cephalic photophores (AOs). Species of three genera, Aristostomias, Malacosteus, and Pachystomias, are capable of producing far‐red, long‐wave emissions (>650nm) from their AOs, a character unique among vertebrates. Aristostomias and Malacosteus posses a single far‐red AO, while Pachystomias possesses anterior and posterior far‐red AOs, each with smaller separate photophores positioned in their ventral margins. The purpose of this study was to establish the primary homology of the loosejaw AOs based on topological similarity of cranial nerve innervation, and subject these homology conjectures to tests of congruence under a phylogenetic hypothesis for the loosejaw dragonfishes. On the basis of whole‐mount, triple‐stained specimens, innervation of the loosejaw AOs is described. The AO of Aristostomias and the anterior AO of Pachystomias are innervated by the profundal ramus of the trigeminal (Tpr), while the far‐red AO of Malacosteus and a small ventral AO of Pachystomias are innervated by the maxillary ramus of the trigeminal (Tmx). The largest far‐red AO of Pachystomias, positioned directly below the orbit, and the short‐wave AO of Photostomias are innervated by a branch of the mandibular ramus of the trigeminal nerve. Conjectures of primary homology drawn from these neuroanatomical similarities were subjected to tests of congruence on a phylogeny of the loosejaws inferred from a reanalysis of a previously published morphological dataset. Optimized for accelerated transformation, the AO innervated by the Tpr appears as a single transformation on the new topology, thereby establishing secondary homology. The AOs innervated by the Tmd found in Pachystomias and Photostomias appear as two transformations in a reconstruction on the new topology, a result that rejects secondary homology of this structure. The secondary homology of AOs innervated by the Tmx found in Malacosteus and Pachystomias is rejected on the same grounds. Two short‐wave cephalic photophores present in all four genera, the suborbital (SO) and the postorbital (PO), positioned in the posteroventral margin of the orbit and directly posterior to the orbit, respectively, are innervated by separate divisions of the Tmd. The primary homologies of the loosejaw PO and SO across loosejaw taxa are proposed on the basis of similar innervation patterns. Because of dissimilar innervation of the loosejaw SO and SO of basal stomiiforms, primary homology of these photophores cannot be established. Because of similar function and position, the PO of all other stomiid taxa is likely homologous with the loosejaw PO. Nonhomology of loosejaw long‐wave photophores is corroborated by previously published histological evidence. The totality of evidence suggests that the only known far‐red bioluminescent system in vertebrates has evolved as many as three times in a closely related group of deep‐sea fishes. J.
