Methods to provide accurate accumulation rates for lake models are discussed. Cores were taken in 1979 in two basins of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, and accumulation rates were calculated by using Pb-210 dating and by a natural landslide marker of 1795 in one basin (Weggis). In the other basin (Horw Bay) the sediment accumulation rates based on the lead method were compared with yearly sedimentation rates measured by sediment traps in 1969/70. At the Weggis station, the core dating yielded sediment accumulation rates of about 400 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the lead method, averaged over a sediment depth of 4–20 cm; accumulation was about 700 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 with the marker method, averaged over 0–33 cm. In Horw Bay, the trap method yielded about 1300 g dry wt. M–2 y–1 compared with 400–1000 g dry wt. m–2 y–1 obtained with the lead method and related to various depth intervals. The characteristic sources of error of the three methods as well as several hypotheses for these discrepancies are discussed.  相似文献

Three concentrations of the herbicide simazine were added to in situ macrophyte-free enclosures with and without sediment contact. Changes in the concentrations of total ammonia, total reactive phosphorus, and silicon were monitored, and net sediment flux was calculated from the difference in nutrient concentration between bottomed and unbottomed enclosures. Rates of sediment release for all three nutrients were unaltered by 0.1 mg · l–1 simazine in relation to a control, whereas rates were increased proportionally at 1.0 and 5.0 mg · l–1. These results suggest that increases in dissolved nutrients commonly observed following herbicide treatment of shallow waters may not be attributable solely to macrophyte decay, byt may also involve a complex interaction of biotic and abiotic sediment nutrient exchange processes.Contribution Number 103 from the University of Manitoba Field Station, Delta Marsh, Canada  相似文献

Caesium-137 and lead-210 dating of recent sediments from Mondsee (Austria)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Mean annual sedimentation rates over the last 20–30 years were determined in the pre-alpine Mondsee (Upper Austria) using Cs-137 and Pb(Po)-210 profiles for sediment core dating and two natural sediment markers. Lower sedimentation rates of about 2–3 mm yr–1 were observed in the central part of the lake near the shore at 18–20 m and in the southern part at 30 m depth. Higher sedimentation rates of 4–7 mm yr–1 were found in the central part of the lake at 47 and 65 m and in the northern bay at 18 and 41 m depth. At both these sites the Pb-210 profiles were strongly disturbed in the upper zone of the sediment cores, whereas the Cs-137 pattern remained intact. The higher annual sediment accumulation rates can be explained only partly by deposition of allochthonous material discharged by the streams, enhanced eutrophication in these parts of the lake, erosion and sediment focusing by turbidity currents being also probable.  相似文献

Boundary layer flow characteristics and sediment permeability control pathways and magnitude of material exchange in the surface layer of aquatic sediments. In fine-grained cohesive beds, bottom currents and sediment microtopography shape the diffusive boundary layer and locally produce areas where the interfacial solute fluxes are increased or reduced. Where sediment permeabilities exceed 10–12 m2, advective pore water flows driven by boundary flow–topography interaction dominate the sediment–water exchange of matter, with transport rates that exceed those of molecular diffusion by two orders of magnitude and more. The curved paths of the advective pore flows through the surface layers of such sandy beds generate complex three-dimensional biogeochemical patterns with extreme spatial and temporal variability ranging from millimeters to decimeters and seconds to seasons. High filtration rates, a bacterial community firmly attached to the mineral grains, rapidly changing biogeochemical zonations and winnowing of the sediment surface layers by frequent resuspension convert these beds into effective biocatalytical filter systems.  相似文献

Short experiments (14–21 days) were carried out during autumn 1998 and spring 1999 at one selected site of the Venice Lagoon to measure bioturbation activities and mixing rates, as well as to obtain quantitative information on benthos functionality. Fluorescent sediment particles (luminophores, 63–350 m) were introduced as pulse inputs at the sediment surface. The concentration–depth profiles of the tracer were simulated with a new advection–diffusion–non local model applied under non-steady state conditions. This allowed the quantification of the mixing parameters associated with different mechanisms: biodiffusion (D b), bioadvection (W) and non-local mixing (Ke, z1, z2). A parameter RS (removed sediment) was also calculated to account for the flux of sediment due to non-local transport. Results show that bioturbation was dominated by biodiffusion in autumn and by bioadvection in spring. Mean mixing parameters Db, W, and RS changed from 3.09 to 0.87 cm2 y–1, from 0.93 to 15.50 y–1 and from 5.85 to 7.79 g cm–2 y–1, respectively.  相似文献

In 1859, the level of Lake Höytiäinen was lowered accidentally by 9.5 m and 157 km2 new land was formed. The event is marked by a 2–3 cm inwash horizon of clay and fine silt in deep-water sediments. In the sediment profile, the dry weights of 2 cm thick subsamples increase from 51 mg g–1 in the clay horizon and decrease back to 117–127 mg g–1 below the clay horizon. Below the pale clay horizon the sediment is muddy and rich in organic substances.Loss on ignition, amount of Tot.P, Tot.N and BOD7 are the highest below the clay horizon. The clay horizon has prevented mixing of the old sediment as well as aerobic decomposition of organic compounds. The high loss on ignition and the large proportion of biologically degradable organic substances in the old sediment resembles the new upper sediment of a typical central Finnish lake.The finding of a 133 year old well preserved top sediment sows that before the impact of waste waters and fertilizers, the upper sediment of the lake was rich in organic substances and nutrients. In spite of cultivation of new land later on, the new top sediment above the clay horizon is not as rich in organic substances and nutrients as the old one below it. This suggests that part of the organic substances may be mobile within the sediment and move to the uppermost sediment layer in the course of time in undisturbed lake sediments.  相似文献

Depth profiles of oxygen concentration and the redox status of acid-extractable iron were measured in littoral sediment cores of Lake Constance after mechanical removal of surface sediment, mixing, and re-deposition. In undisturbed sediment cores, oxygen penetrated down to 2.9±0.4 mm or 4.6±0.4 mm depth, respectively, after 12 h of incubation in the dark or light; causing a net diffusive flux of 108±20 nmol cm−2 h−1 oxygen into or 152±35 nmol cm−2 h−1 out of the sediment. The uppermost 20 mm layer of the undisturbed sediment cores contained 10.2± 0.7 μmol cm−3 ferrous and 3.8±1.1 μmol cm−3 ferric iron. After erosion, the oxic–anoxic interface in the newly exposed sediment was shifted to about 2 mm depth within 30 min, causing an oxygen flow into the sediment. During the following 12 h, oxygen penetrated deeper into the sediment, and in the light oxygen was produced photosynthetically. Ferrous iron was largely oxidized within two days after erosion. The oxidation rates were higher in oxic than in anoxic sediment layers, and decreased with time. This oxidation process took the longer and was confined closer to the surface the more reduced the exposed sediment had been before. Resuspension of eroded sediment in aerated lake water did not cause a significant oxidation or reduction of iron. After re-deposition, the oxic–anoxic interface in the re-sedimented material shifted to about 2 mm depth within 30 min, causing an oxygen flow into the sediment. During the following 12 h, the oxygen penetration depth and the oxygen flow rate into the re-deposited sediment did not change any further, and no oxygen was produced in the light. Ferric iron was reduced during the first day after re-deposition, and partly re-oxidized during the second day. The extent of reduction was stronger and the extent of oxidation weaker the more reduced the resuspended sediment was before. Oxic conditions in the sediment surface were established faster and ferrous iron was oxidized to a larger extent after erosion of sediment than after resuspension and sedimentation.  相似文献

为探究延河流域在开展水土保持工程前后极端降水条件下水沙特征变化情况,采用统计学方法对比分析了延河流域1977年和2013年7月两次极端降水条件下的水沙特征变化情况。结果表明:1977年7月极端暴雨具有降雨强度大和降雨量峰值大、降雨强度空间分布极不均匀的特征;2013年7月极端暴雨具有降雨总量和时段降雨量大、暴雨频率高、降雨强度空间分布较均匀的特征。2013年7月洪水洪峰流量、洪水总径流量、洪峰含沙量等特征值较1977年7月显著减小,输沙量随径流量的减小而显著减小。1977年7月洪水表现为陡涨陡落,洪水历时较短;2013年7月洪水表现为缓涨缓落,洪水历时明显延长。与1977年相比,2013年泥沙颗粒明显细化。该研究表明1990年代以来水土保持高水平的规模化治理改变了流域产、汇流的下垫面条件,是导致1977年和2013年7月极端降水条件下的水沙特征表现迥异的主要原因。该研究为应对极端降水引发的洪灾和防治水土流失提供可靠的科学理论依据。  相似文献

Linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS) was detected in a 0–30 cm deep sediment column collected in Lake Teganuma (one of the most polluted lakes in Japan). The range of the LAS concentration in sediments was between 0.1 and 500 µg g–1 (C11-C14 homologs per dry solid) and its vertical profile showed a seasonal variation. A mathematical model, which includes a diffusion term and a biodegradation term, was used to simulate the temporal variation of LAS in the sediment column and to calculate the diffusive flux rate of LAS across the sediment/water interface. An averaged diffusion coefficient of 2.4 × 10–5 cm2 s–1 for the sediment interstitial water was obtained from sediment core samples located in Lake Teganuma. The biodegradation rate constant (0.002 d–1) of LAS in the sediment obtained from the model analysis was considerably less than that reported for LAS in anaerobic waters. These results confirm that a model describing diffusive transport and biodegradation of LAS in the sediments can simulate the temporal variation of LAS in near surface sediments. The diffusive flux rate from overlying water to bottom sediment was calculated to be between –0.20 and 0.52 (C11-C14 LAS) mg m–2 h–1 and the annual net flux rate was 0.7 g m–2 y–1.  相似文献

The rates of sedimentation of fallout nuclides were determined by means of sediment traps during 28 months after the Chernobyl accident in southern Lake Päijänne, Finland. The spatial distribution of the radionuclide content of the lake bottom was studied on 35 sediment cores in winters 1987/88 and 1988/89. The results were compared with simultaneous observations of the radionuclide content of the water and seston. The role of different transfer mechanisms in the elimination of radionuclides from the water column is discussed.The values recorded for the flux to the lake sediments were on average of the same order of magnitude as the initial deposition on the lake surface (Cs-137 65 kBqm–2). The radionuclide flux to the sediments was rapid during the first months after the accident. After that the elimination of dissolved nuclides from the water mass became significantly slower. The highest flux rate was that of Ce-144 and the lowest that of Rh-106 (Ru-106). Of the radiocesium, about half of the initial inventory was transferred to the sediments after the first observation year.The content of radionuclides showed considerable spatial variation on the lake bottom (Cs-137 7–280 kBqm–2). Direct adsorption of radiocesium explains unexpectedly high concentrations on shallow erosion bottoms. There was a clear tendency for the concentrations to increase with depth, as a result of the focusing effect. Sediment resuspension had a significant impact on the total flux of radionuclides to deepwater sediments. Estimates were made of the resuspended flux of radionuclides.  相似文献

研究不同放牧制度草场水土流失过程,对草原生态环境保护和治理具有重要的理论意义。以内蒙古呼伦贝尔草原不同放牧草场为研究对象,设置选取三种放牧制度草场(自由放牧、轮牧、休牧),采用人工模拟降雨的方法进行0.74mm/min和1.5mm/min雨强的降雨模拟试验,测定径流量,含沙量,径流和泥沙中总氮,总磷浓度,并探讨植被截留对径流的影响规律。结果表明:植被截留对减少降雨径流具有明显的作用,休牧草场径流系数减小最多,自由放牧草场减小最少,产沙量显示为自由放牧草场轮牧草场休牧草场。降雨强度对径流中的氮磷浓度影响显著,自由放牧草场总氮浓度和休牧草场总磷浓度受雨强影响最大,氮磷流失过程浓度变化曲线更符合幂函数分布。休牧草场泥沙氮含量和泥沙磷含量均为最高,自由放牧草场与休牧草场的总氮富集率基本相等且均大于轮牧草场,总磷富集率为自由放牧休牧轮牧,三种放牧草场氮磷和泥沙流失主要影响因素为径流量和含沙量。因此,适当的将呼伦贝尔草原自由放牧草场向休牧和轮牧草场转变,将有利于减少草场水土营养元素流失及草原生态可持续发展。  相似文献

Sedimentation of organic particles plays a decisive role in streams in relation to pelagic loss as well as retention of nutrients and other substances. The plate sediment trap allows for the direct measurement of these net fluxes. Biweekly measurements were undertaken in the eutrophic lowland River Spree (MQ 14 m3 s–1) 10 km upstream of Berlin in 1999 and 2000. Trapping rates between 0.5 and 25 g DW m–2 day–1 were found near the bank. The variance of seston sedimentation is controlled by the seston concentration, the settling velocity of the particles and the flow velocity. The sinking velocity exhibits significant seasonal fluctuations with highest values in summer. It is shown that the critical flow velocity for sedimentation is another important parameter. This controls the distribution of sedimentation over the width of the river and thus the effective average sedimentation rate for the entire river segment. This average rate ranged between 0.9 and 6.6 g DW m–2 day–1.  相似文献

Sediment and seston oxygen consumption rates below the sharp halocline in the south-eastern part of the shallow Kattegat were measured and compared to calculated rates of carbon addition through the halocline. The mean rate of decrease in deep-water oxygen concentrations between March and September 1988 was 1.0 ml O2 M–3 h–1. Measurements of benthic oxygen uptake using laboratory-incubated sediment cores from depths 30 m gave a mean value of 7.8 ml O2 m–2 h–1. Below-halocline water (from 20 m, 30 m and 1 m above bottom) incubated in bottles showed oxygen consumption rates varying from 0.5 ml O2 m –3 h–1 in March to 2.8 ml O2 M–3 h-1 in late August. The sum of benthic and deep-water oxygen consumption was equivalent to a mean oxygen decrease rate of 1.7 ml O2 m–3 h–1 below the halocline. Of the total oxygen consumption below the halocline 65% was due to oxygen up-take in the water and 35% was due to benthic oxygen consumption. The sum of oxygen consumption measured in sediment cores and in bottles corresponds to a carbon utilisation of 80.1 g C m–2 (respiratory quotient (RQ), assumed 1.0 and 1.4 for water and sediment, respectively), while the decrease in deep-water oxygen concentration was equivalent to 43.0 g C m–2 (RQ assumed = 1.0). Using published values for the external N loading (including deep-water supply), 15NO3-uptake, 14CO2-uptake in combination with % 15NO3-uptake of total 15N-uptake (nitrate, ammonia and urea) and a Redfield C/N ratio of 6.6, rates of carbon addition (new or export production) through the halocline were calculated to 31.9, 46.7 and 36.3 g C m–2, respectively, with a mean value of 38.3 g C m–2 for the 8 month period March–September. This is somewhat less than the value (50.5 g C m–2) calculated from a published empirical relationship between total and export production. The fact that the calculated carbon addition through the halocline was appreciably less than the carbon equivalent of the measured below-halocline respiration may be an effect of sediment focusing (horizontal transport of sedimenting material to deeper areas), since the bottom area below the halocline is much smaller than the total area of the Kattegat. A lower observed decrease in the oxygen concentration below the halocline compared to the sum of measured sediment and deep-water oxygen consumption on the other hand indicates oxygen supply to below-halocline waters through advection and/or vertical entrainment.  相似文献

The contribution of erosion of bed sediment to the load of metals leaving Lake Ketelmeer, a shallow lake in the Netherlands fed by the IJssel branch of the River Rhine, is reported. Transport of suspended matter and associated trace metals was measured using both centrifuges and sediment traps at several locations in the lake. Mass balances of suspended matter and heavy metals were calculated using data from these field measurements.Metal/scandium-ratios were used to identify the source of the suspended matter in the lake. Since the bed sediment is more polluted than the suspended sediment entering the lake, higher metal/scandium-ratios were found for bottom sediment in the lake compared with those for suspended matter entering the lake from the River IJssel. Using the metal/scadium-ratio in suspended matter from the lake, it was calculated that bottom sediments made up 43% of the suspended matter leaving the lake. This implies an erosion flux of bottom sediment of 16 g m–2 d–1. For cadmium, mercury, chromium and zinc, this erosion process accounts for more than 50% of the pollutant load leaving Lake Ketelmeer and entering Lake IJsselmeer.  相似文献

A three-year (1991–1993) field investigation was conducted to quantify the hydrodynamics of intertidal marshes adjacent to tidal channels and shallow bays within two Louisiana coastal regions: (1) the sediment-rich Atchafalaya Basin, and, (2) the sediment-poor Terrebonne Basin with relatively minor riverine inflow. The Terrebonne Basin marsh is regularly inundated and flooding is characterized by sporadic draining interspersed by prolonged flooding events. The maximum water depth on the marsh surface exceeds 50 cm, the flow velocity across marsh surface reaches 10 cm sec–1, and the sediment deposition rate varies from 10 to 90 g m–2 per tidal cycle. This rather high sediment deposition rate occurs during winter storms with strong southerly winds. In contrast, the marsh site within the sediment-rich Atchafalaya Basin is irregularly inundated and characterized by sporadic flooding interspersed by prolonged draining. There the marsh flooding depth rarely exceeds 25 cm, the over-marsh flow velocity barely reaches 2.5 cm sec–1, and the sediment deposition rate ranges from 5 to 50 g m–2 per tidal cycle. The surprisingly low rate of sediment deposition in a marsh within a sediment-rich region is largely due to the man-made canals that alter the hydrologic regime in the upper reaches of the tidal channel.  相似文献

The ion recombination times, the energy balance characteristics, and the time behavior of the radiation intensity of lead and gallium laser plasmas are determined by analyzing the trailing edges of the waveforms of various spectral lines. Reasons for different decay rates of the spectral lines are analyzed. Experiments on laser erosion of lead and gallium targets under the action of repetitive neodymium laser radiation with a pulse duration of 20 ns, wavelength of 1.06 μm, repetition rate of 12 Hz, and peak intensity on the target surface of 108–109 W/cm2 were carried out at a residual air pressure of 3–12 Pa.  相似文献

Denitrification is a major mechanism for nitrogen removal from nitrogen-rich waters, but it requires oxygen-poor conditions. We assessed denitrification rates in nitrate-rich but also oxygen-rich river water during its stay in a floodplain. We measured diurnal oxygen fluctuations in floodwater along the river Rhine, and carried out an experiment to assess denitrification rates during day, evening and night. Denitrification in floodwater and flooded sediment were measured, comparing activity of periphyton and sediment from agricultural grasslands and reedbeds. Floodwater along the river Rhine was oxygen-saturated (> 10 mg O2/L) during the day, but oxygen largely disappeared during the night (0.4–0.8 mg O2/L). Independent of oxygen concentrations, denitrification in surface water alone hardly occurred. In flooded sediments, however, denitrification rates were much higher (1.1–1.5 mg N m–2 h–1), particularly at dark and oxygen-poor conditions (nighttime). In the experimental jars, reedbed-periphyton bacteria achieved similar denitrification rates as bacteria in sediment, but overall periphyton denitrification was of minor importance when calculated per square meter. Apart from oxygen levels, maximum denitrification appeared to be regulated by nitrate diffusion from water into the sediment, as the maximum quantity of N denitrified in the sediment equalled the quantity of N lossed from the surface water. Assessed 24-hr denitrification rates in the flooded floodplains (c. 15 mg N m–2 d–1) were similar in grasslands and reedbeds, and were rather low compared to rates in other floodplains.  相似文献

Groundwater is a major influence on the hydrological, chemical and thermal regime of chalk streams in the southern U.K. However, little is currently known about the nature of the sediment delivery system within these chalk stream systems, even though sediment-related problems have been increasingly cited as a cause of habitat degradation and of declining salmonid stocks. To address this knowledge gap, suspended sediment fluxes were monitored at 4 sites within the Hampshire Avon catchment between February 1999 and August 2000. Maximum suspended sediment concentrations ranged from nearly 45 mg l–1 to 260 mg l–1. Over the study period, annual suspended sediment loads ranged from 644 to 6215 t yr–1 and annual specific sediment yields ranged from 1.4 to 12.5 t km–2 yr–1. The results show that, relative to other U.K. rivers, the study chalk streams are characterised by low suspended sediment concentrations and loads and less episodic behaviour.  相似文献

The concentrations of copper, zinc, lead and cadmium in the surface sediment (upper 5 mm) were generally higher in the silt fraction than in the bulk sediment. No significant geographical trend in the metal concentrations of the surface sediments was found, nor a correlation between concentrations in bulk sediment as well as in the silt fraction and the % silt could be established. In general, the metal concentrations in both bulk sediment and silt are lower, when compared to marine environments in other climatological regions.In zooplankton, the metal concentrations were relatively high: expressed in µg g–1 on a dry weight (D.W.) basis, they ranged from 15–90 for copper, 70–580 for zinc, 12–55 for lead and 4–10 for cadmium.In epibenthic invertebrate species, both in crustaceans and bivalve molluscs, the concentrations of copper, zinc, and lead were in the same order of magnitude as compared to corresponding species from other geographical latitudes. Cadmium concentrations were relatively low, ranging from 0.13–0.42 µg g–1 D.W. in the bivalve molluscs Pitaria tumens and from 0.04–0.27 µg g–1 D.W. in the shrimp Processa elegantula. Also in the crab species Ilia spinosa, Inachus sp. and Pagurus sp., the cadmium concentrations were low, varying between 0.1 and 0.2 µg g–1 D.W.No significant relation between the metal concentration in whole-body samples and sediment (either bulk or silt) was present. Also no gradient was apparent in concentrations in organisms sampled at different depths (5 to 200 m) along two off-shore transects perpendicular to the Banc d'Arguin. Data indicated lower metal concentration in epibenthic organisms from sampling stations along a northern transect (southwest of Cap Blanc) than in organisms from the southern transect, off Cap Timiris.Evidence was obtained for a considerable atmospheric input of heavy metals, in particular zinc and lead, in a certain area along the continental slope of the Banc d'Arguin.  相似文献
