The social behavior of five species of Zetoborinae cockroaches is compared with respect to inter-individual interactions of nymphs in the laboratory. These species belong to the same Neotropical subfamily and were characterized as gregarious (Lanxoblatta emarginata, Parasphaeria boleiriana, Phortioeca nimbata, Schultesia lampyridiformis) and solitary (Thanatophyllum akinetum) by previous field studies. Our results show that gregarious species accept closer contacts than does the solitary one. The solitary species did not display especially short, infrequent or less diverse behavioral sequences when forced to remain aggregated, but its interactions are characterized by fewer acts promoting contact and more dominance-like acts. The solitary species symmetrically interacts with conspecifics and does not show specific dispersal-promoting behaviors. This suggests that the solitary behavior observed in the field for species of Zetoborinae mainly results from a passive spacing tendency and a lack of attraction for conspecifics. One of the gregarious species, P. boleiriana, was previously described as subsocial with nymphs remaining with the female in a wood chamber after brood birth. This species does not show a peculiar behavioral repertoire but its interactions are characterized by more dominance-like behaviors than are those of the non-subsocial gregarious species. The social behavior of male stumptail macaques was analyzed in terms of behavioral sequences recorded during paired encounters in a large test cage. Recurrent patterns of behavioral sequences were sought and used to hypothesize the structure of motivational systems of social behavior as has been done previously for other species. In addition to traditional statistical analyses to determine which dyadic behavioral sequences were nonrandom, there were several methodological innovations. Instead of analyzing behavior as a single channel of communications, we analyzed three independent channels and considered their inter-correlations: 1) acts and postures; 2) vocalizations; and 3) facial expressions. Also, we analyzed not only within-animal behavioral sequences but between-animal sequences as well. Results were derived from 40 tests, most of which included vigorous agonistic and sexual interactions and a behavioral repertoire similar to that of adult male stumptail macaques observed by previous investigators. There were 30 acts and postures, eight facial expressions, and seven vocalizations that occurred more than five times. Many acts and postures occurred in nonrandom sequences, 43 such sequences within-animal and 40 between-animal. From these sequences and their correlations with specific vocalizations and facial expressions, it was possible to differentiate six categories of social behavior that may correspond to six different motivational systems: offense, defense, submission, groom and contact, male sexual behavior, and display. Both the frequency of behaviors in each category and the nature of the behavioral sequences were affected by the relative dominance of the two animals.  相似文献

We studied agonistic interactions among male Madagascar hissing cockroaches,Gromphadorhina portentosa, in groups of five (low-density) or 10 (high-density) males. Consistent with previous studies of male pairs, we observed aggression (Abdomen Flick, Abdomen Push, Butt, Lunge), submission (Crouch, Retreat), and noncontact behavior (Abdominal Extension, Abdomen Thrash, Agonistic Hiss, Stilt). Males at both densities performed all acts. However, males in the high-density group performed Abdomen Push significantly more often than males at a low density. The rate of each remaining act was unaffected by density. Regardless of density, males within social groups varied in aggression. More aggressive males utilized frontal assaults (Butt and Lunge) during interactions, while males displaying lower levels of aggression preferentially used the abdomen during interactions. More aggressive males performed Abdomen Flick more frequently, while males displaying lower levels of aggression performed Abdomen Push. We also investigated the relationship between male aggression and the four noncontact behaviors. We found that Abdominal Extension, Abdomen Thrash, and Agonistic Hiss were positively correlated with our aggregate measure of male aggression suggesting these are aggressive displays. Stilt was positively correlated with measures of both aggression and submission, leaving its function unclear. None of the behavioral acts examined in this study were highly correlated with male weight. Our results are discussed in light of possible hypotheses addressing the function of specific behavior during male-male competition.  相似文献

Animal display behaviors are used to convey specific messages to other animals, including potential mates, rivals, and predators. However, because these different types of interactions can be mediated by a single behavioral display, or conversely, multiple signals can be used to convey one specific message, interpretation of any particular behavioral display can be difficult. Leiocephalus lizards (i.e., curly tails) provide an excellent opportunity to study the use of display behaviors across multiple contexts. Previous research has demonstrated that the use of tail curling in these lizards is associated with predation risk, but less is known regarding the use of this behavior in social interactions with conspecifics. The goal of this study was to determine the extent to which tail curling display behavior is used to mediate both social and predatory interactions in two species, Leiocephalus barahonensis and L. carinatus. We found that in lizards of both species, tail curling was used in interactions with both conspecifics and potential (human) predators. However, tail curl intensity did not differ between lizards involved in social encounters and solitary lizards, although L. barahonensis lizards performed more headbobs during social than non‐social observations. Further, L. carinatus lizards exhibited greater intensity of tail curling upon fleeing from a human predator than during observations in which individuals interacted with conspecifics, and lizards that exhibited tighter tail curls fled from predators for a longer distance. Finally, tail curl intensity was not correlated with headbob displays in either species, suggesting that these two components of display communicate different information. Our results suggest that tail curling displays, while consistently a component of interactions with potential predators, are not a necessary component of social interactions. These data contribute to a more complete understanding of how and why visual signals evolve for use in communication across multiple contexts.  相似文献

Banksia goodii (rare) and B. gardneri var. gardneri (widespread) are closely related rhizomatous evergreen subshrubs of south western Australian scrub-heath and woodland. B. goodii is restricted to sixteen populations, most of which are remnants on roadsides due to landscape fragmentation from agricultural activities. Bioclimatic profiles indicate that B. gardneri spans a wider range of climates than B. goodii. However, their post-fire survival and resprouting vigour, rates of seedling growth and soil penetration and susceptibility to seedling predators are similar. Both have the potential for geographic range extension, especially B. goodi. Seedlings of both species survived for at least 3 years at sites with 2 (but not 3) months shorter and 1 month longer growing seasons than experienced by natural B. goodii populations. Seedling establishment did not occur in the absence of fire and was low (1.3% of released intact seeds for B. goodii) even following en masse release of seeds after fire. Sowing of intact seeds, especially in cleared areas and with protection from herbivores, increased this to 35%. Fire survival among adults of both species was 100% following two fires. B. goodii, which roots along its rhizomes, produces ramets, while B. gardneri, with a lignotuber instead, does not. Seed production, pre-dispersal granivory and canopy seed storage are low but similar for both species, although B. gardneri has a superior level of germination. The biology of B. gardneri thus provides few insights as to why B. goodii is rare. There were no differences in topo-edaphic attributes, community structure, shading or litter cover between localized sites where either species occurred alone or together. Differences in present or prehistoric fire regimes, clearing (habitat fragmentation), susceptibility to generalist fungal pathogens, or impacts of alien invasives, cannot explain the distribution of B. goodii relative to B. gardneri. The rarity of B. goodii may be a result of its recent origin, habitat specialization (dense woodland), and the impacts of habitat fragmentation within its current range, rather than inferior vegetative, reproductive and/or ecological attributes.  相似文献

Fully subterranean Rhizanthella gardneri (Orchidaceae) is obligately mycoheterotrophic meaning it is nutritionally dependent on the fungus it forms mycorrhizas with. Furthermore, R. gardneri purportedly participates in a nutrient sharing tripartite relationship where its mycorrhizal fungus simultaneously forms ectomycorrhizas with species of Melaleuca uncinata s.l. Although the mycorrhizal fungus of R. gardneri has been morphologically identified as Thanatephorus gardneri (from a single isolate), this identification has been recently questioned. We sought to clarify the identification of the mycorrhizal fungus of R. gardneri, using molecular methods, and to identify how specific its mycorrhizal relationship is. Fungal isolates taken from all sites where R. gardneri is known to occur shared almost identical ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences. The fungal isolate rDNA most closely matched that of other Ceratobasidiales species, particularly within the Ceratobasidium genus. However, interpretation of results was difficult as we found two distinct ITS sequences within all mycorrhizal fungal isolates of R. gardneri that we assessed. All mycorrhizal fungal isolates of R. gardneri readily formed ectomycorrhizas with a range of M. uncinata s.l. species. Consequently, it is likely that R. gardneri can form a nutrient sharing tripartite relationship where R. gardneri is connected to autotrophic M. uncinata s.l. by a common mycorrhizal fungus. These findings have implications for better understanding R. gardneri distribution, evolution and the ecological significance of its mycorrhizal fungus, particularly in relation to nutrient acquisition.  相似文献

A field study revealed that the mating system of the richardiid Setellia sp. meets even the most stringent definition of lek behavior. Males remain on the upper surface of the leaves of Saranthe aff. klotzchiana (Maranthaceae), where they perform ritualized displays related to courtship and territorial behavior. Correlational data support the existence of reproductive dominance hierarchies, which are based on both male vs. male and female vs. female agonistic interactions. Curiously, the behavioral acts performed by Setellia sp. show remarkable similarities to other nonrelated dipteran lekkers. Aspects of evolution and convergence of these behaviors in the Acalyptratae are considered.  相似文献

Ritualized courtship behaviors are used to recognize potential mates and behavioral patterns are inevitably different among populations that demonstrate reproductive incompatibility. We characterized and compared the courtship behaviors of two morphotypes of the cryptic species complex Anastrepha fraterculus: Brazil-1 morphotype and Brazil-3 morphotype. Courtship behaviors were filmed to analyze the behavioral sequences of these two morphotypes during homotypic crossings. The behavioral units Alignment (AL) and Abdominal movements (AB and AB-call) were newly recognized in the courtship ethogram of Anastrepha fraterculus males. The two morphotypes show distinct behavioral sequences leading up to copulation. Some behaviors were repeated frequently during the courtship process, while others were more restricted to the final moments of courtship. The three behavioral units that contributed most to copulation success were Contact, Alignment, and Arrowhead 1 in the Brazil-1 morphotype and Alignment, Arrowhead 1, and Fanning in the Brazil-3 morphotype. Some behavioral routines differed across the two morphotypes. Significant differences were also noted between the frequencies of the behavioral units displayed during courtship in the two morphotypes. The relationships between the pre-zygotic incompatibilities of the Brazil-1 and Brazil-3 morphotypes and the differences between the courtship behaviors of their males are discussed. Our results indicate that behavioral isolation is involved in the process of pre-zygotic reproductive isolation of Brazil-1 and Brazil-3 morphotypes.  相似文献

The effects of different environments on the agonistic behavior of males of the cockroach, Nauphoeta cinerea were investigated. We compared the social interactions between pairs of males that had been reared during the period of sexual maturation, when social behavior develops, under one of four environmental treatments: (1) control (28°C with ad libitum food and water) (2) heat stress (35°C, ad libitum food and water) (3) water deprivation (28°C), or (4) food and water deprivation (28°C). Different environments affected the structure of the interactions between males and the behavior of both dominant and subordinate individuals. The mean number of agonistic acts per minute was similar for all treatment groups except the water-deprived group, which was significantly lower. Water-deprived, food- and water-deprived, and heat-stress rearing conditions reduced the stability of agonistic interactions relative to the control group. When reared under stressful conditions, dominant-scored males decreased the number of aggressive acts and increased the number of submissive acts, and subordinate-scored males decreased the number of submissive acts and increased the number of aggressive acts. Thus, stressful environmental conditions can disrupt agonistic interactions and cause both dominant and subordinate male N. cinerea to adopt different behavioral strategies during male-male competition.  相似文献

Bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas spp. is an important tomato and pepper disease worldwide. Recent outbreaks of bacterial spot disease in Central Brazil and Canada have been attributed to Xanthomonas gardneri, which is also recognized as group D of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria. Carotenoid-like pigments called xanthomonadins, which are diagnostic for yellow Xanthomonas spp., were extracted from X. gardneri. It was shown that the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, member of the Brassicaceae family, can develop disease symptoms in response to different isolates of X. gardneri. Secretion of enzymes has been shown to play an important role in pathogenicity for different pathogens, and to begin to understand the interaction of X. gardneri and A. thaliana, a biochemical analysis of secreted proteins in the presence of A. thaliana leaves was performed. Different enzymatic activities such as for cellulase, α-arabinofuranosidase, pectinase, invertase and xylanase were assayed. In the presence of leaves, cellulase activity was highest after 60 and 72 h of growth and α-arabinofuranosidase activity was detected between 12 and 72 h of growth. Pectinase, invertase and xylanase activities were not detected. Cellulase and α-arabinofuranosidase activities may be important for X. gardneri acquisition of plant nutrients through degradation of cellulose fibers and hemicellulose of the cell wall, respectively, to the invasion of the host tissue and/or may generate signal molecules that are recognized by the plant. This is the first study to address how X. gardneri responds to host plant tissue.  相似文献

Summary Sexual behaviors of the salmon are composed of a stimulus-reaction chain, which ensures synchronous spawning between the sexes and successful fertilization. To characterize the signals involved in such a stimulusreaction chain, the body vibration and electromyographic activity of the trunk muscles during spawning were simultaneously recorded from freely behaving male and female pairs of himé salmon (landlocked red salmon,Oncorhynchus nerkd) and were analyzed in combination with a videographic analysis of behavior sequences. The results showed that the himé salmon have an elaborate communication system in which characteristic vibrational signals are exchanged. These are produced by body vibration due to trunk muscle activity related to spawning and are transmitted between the sexes with an accurate timing through the stimulus-reaction chain. They act as timing cues to synchronize gamete release and are thought to be shared among a wide variety of fishes. It was hypothesized that the lateral line sense is involved in the detection of these vibrational signals. Furthermore, based on the sequence matrix analysis as well as on information theory, intersexual behavioral sequences during spawning were analyzed statistically. The results showed that statistically significant interactions occur between the sexes and statistically significant amounts of information are transmitted through the interactions, supporting the results from recording experiments mentioned above. Characters of the signalling system and possible origins of the vibrational signals are also discussed.  相似文献

The reproductive stages of Dermocarpella gardneri and D. stellata, which have been reported only once, are described. Formation of baeocytes occurs by cellular divisions that are parallel to the substratum, followed by a series of anticlinal radial divisions. In some cases in D. gardneri, the superior cell, resulting from the first division parallel to the substratum, is liberated prior to radial divisions, and these probably represent the ‘macrogonidia’ originally described by Lemmermann for D. hemisphaerica. The baeocytes are released through a circular apical pore, which develops after the formation of a papilla that eventually dissolves to form a pore.  相似文献

Parental care and division of labor in male and female primary reproductives in incipient colonies of the dampwood termite Zootermopsis angusticolliswere studied by recording repertory sizes, behavior frequencies, time budgets, and transition probabilities of acts. Repertory sizes for males and females were identical, and behaviors were performed at similar frequencies. Time budget data also suggested equal participation in parental care by both sexes. Transition probability analysis suggested that males and females did not organize their behavior in roles. We therefore found no indication of sex-based division of labor during colony foundation and the incipient stages of colony growth. The lack of behavioral specialization may be due to the fact that acts might be related and/or have more than one function, and different tasks are not spatially associated. Our observations are consistent with the hypothesis that monogamous mating systems in termites involve mate assistance.  相似文献

In this study, the reproductive behavior of Economidichthys pygmaeus was investigated under laboratory conditions with simultaneous video and acoustic recordings. Males of the freshwater goby E. pygmaeus do not produce sounds either during the courtship/spawning phase or during aggressive interactions. A detailed analysis of the behavioral sequences revealed the absence of any digging and nest-building activities, whereas the other behavioral components of courtship and spawning are similar to those described for other goby species, showing also a similar function. Results were discussed in terms of secondary loss of sound production within the sand gobies, a group of highly soniferous fishes in the family Gobiidae.  相似文献

Founding queens are central to the survival and maintenance of social insect colonies but are often ignored in studies of social insects. We expect the behaviors performed by a newly-mated ant queen to be critical to colony survival and maintenance but what are these behaviors and how do they change over time as colonies grow? The aim of this work was to describe and compare the behavioral repertoire performed by newly mated Atta sexdens queens during both founding and ergonomic stages. Using the Focal Animal Sampling method, 42 behavioral acts were identified and grouped into seven categories, according to their probable biological function. The most frequent behavioral acts were those related to selfgrooming, indicating the potential vulnerability of the colony to parasites at this early stage. Contrary to previous reports, A. sexdens queens feed on the fungus garden when founding new colonies, indicating that, although not exogenous, fungal staphylae, together with trophic eggs, supply the founding queens with a ready energy source they need during the founding stage. The behavioral repertoires of the queens that died during the observational period were compared with those of queens that survived. Before dying, queens performed a behavioral repertoire made almost exclusively of stereotyped behaviors, showing no apparent biological function. Queens that died exhibited lower frequencies of selfgrooming and did not ingest any staphylae, while laying more trophic eggs than the queens that survived. Our results indicate that selfgrooming may be a key behavior for queens to succeed in founding a colony in the absence of worker labor. Further, the behavioral repertoire reported can serve as a foundation for future behavioral work on this important phase in the life of social insects.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that subtle, short-term (birth to 3 months) differences in rearing experiences (peer-peer vs. mother-peer) produce measurable differences in the development and performance of four affinitive and four approach behaviors in late infancy (12 months of age) and in the late juvenile period (42 months of age). Data on 87 monkeys (45 males and 42 females) were obtained by a series of approximately 2,100 focal animal sampling sessions. Significant effects of rearing were found in two affinitive behaviors (Allogroom andHold) with mother-peer reared subjects having a higher mean rate of performance. There were no significant main effects or interactions among any of the approach behaviors. Several suggestions are proposed to account for the resistance of six behaviors (Muzzle-muzzle, Touch, Ear flatten, Follow, Lip smack andSocial approach) to the effects of the experimental procedures: (1) these behaviors may reflect genetically mediated behavioral characteristics of the species that are not modified by environmental conditions; (2) environmental conditions used in the study may have been too subtle and consequently insufficient to produce an effect on relatively resistant behaviors; or (3) effects of the early rearing experience on these behaviors may be observable only during adolescence or adulthood when the proper performance of these behaviors is more crucial to social success, social integration and reproduction. In this study we examined the mating behavior of Dryas iulia and the acceptance and rejection mechanisms of females during courtship activity. An ethogram of mating behavior was organized on the basis of 100 h of observation in an insectarium. Several different behaviors were catalogued and separated into two behavioral repertoires (pre-coupling, post-coupling). The behavioral sequence of mating behavior was also analyzed using a total of 53 pairs of D. iulia. The courtship activities involved interactions between the sexes in three sequential phases—the aerial, air-ground, and ground phases. In 49% of observations the courtship activities led to copulation. The mean time to the occurrence of the first interaction between males and females did not differ between interactions with and without copulation. The behavior of females and males in the two groups were analyzed and differences were found between behavioral activities of both sexes. The results indicate that males’ insistence on courtship does not affect their copulatory success, and that females play a decisive role in copulation occurrence. Analysis of behavioral transitions showed there are many alternative behavioral routines in interactions with and without copulation. The number of behavioral transitions recorded was smaller in the group in which copulation occurred, indicating that males with copulatory success modified their behavior less frequently. Successful males recorded more transitions with a probability of occurrence greater than 0.4, and their behavioral activity was also less reticulated. Analysis using the stereotyping index showed that situations in which copulations occurred were more stereotyped than those in which it did not.  相似文献

Abstract. Settlement is an important process in the biphasic life histories of many marine invertebrates. Little is known regarding the fine-scale behavioral mechanisms for finding and attaching to a suitable substratum, particularly under conditions that may impose a potential challenge, such as flow. In this study, we examined the settlement behavior of cyphonautes larvae of the bryozoan, Membranipora membranacea, in response to two different algal substrata. Larvae showed a strong preference for settling on the kelp Nereocystis luetkeana over the red alga Mazzaella splendens. We then tested whether the behavioral mechanisms used by larvae to attach to these algae differed when presented with the challenge of flowing water during settlement. We found that larvae exhibited different behaviors on the two species of algae in flowing water. Larvae were more often observed in direct contact with the preferred alga (N. luetkeana) exhibiting fine-scale active search behaviors. On the less preferred alga (M. splendens), larvae were less frequently observed in direct contact with the alga, and appeared to be exhibiting broad-scale passive search behaviors along the surface of the blade. Our results suggest that cyphonautes larvae alter their behavior in response to their preferred settlement habitat.  相似文献

A number of social behaviors were observed in a captive troop ofColobus guereza on a regular basis for eight months. These included clasping and related behaviors, forward mounts, rear mounts, presents, troop positions during rest periods, infant transfers and attempted transfers, play, and grooming. During the observation period two significant events occurred: a re-introduction of a mother and her juvenile female, and the birth of an infant to a resident female. These events caused an increase in certain adult behaviors indicating a relationship of them with similar behaviors done between mothers and infants. This similarity seemed to indicate the co-evolution of “maternal” behaviors for use in adult social interactions and the phenomenon of infant transfer or sharing. The maternal and socio-maternal behaviors and their infantile precursors are then discussed in relation to the ontogeny of behavioral forms, the ontogeny of motivation in such behaviors, and the idea of infantile regression during development and in adult life.  相似文献
