Abstract. 1. The relationship between responses of the insect parasitoid Cotesia rubecula (Marshall) to kairomones produced by the feeding activities of its host, Pieris rapae (L.), and patterns of parasitism were investigated under field conditions.
2. Parasitoid adults aggregated in patches with the highest densities of host larvae but there was no commensurate increase in the rate of attack in these patches.
3. The rate of attack was not limited by the availability of eggs.
4. The rate of parasitoid attack was highest where feeding damage by the host was highest, irrespective of current host density.
5. The rate of parasitoid attack was further influenced by host age distribution. Late instar larvae were less susceptible to parasitism than were early instar larvae. The rate of attack on early instar larvae occupying the same plants as late instar larvae was reduced. This reduction in rate of attack was due to limitations on parasitoid search time imposed by the increased feeding damage associated with large host larvae and by the increased time the parasitoid required to recover from an attack on these large host larvae.  相似文献

About 2,000 panicles (60,000 spikelets) of known bursting date from small plots of oats were dissected in detail. It is noted that spraying young oat plants with DDT against first generation attack also reduces panicle attack. The spraying causes physical differences between the sprayed and the unsprayed areas — namely spraying gives a higher plant density and uniformity of panicle bursting date. The liability of main grain rather than a bosom grain to be attacked is noted at different levels of overall attack.Blindness of oats is discussed, and data are given to support the theory that one type of blindness is due to early frit fly attack on the immature grain.
Zusammenfassung Ungefähr 2000 Rispen (60000 Ährchen) von kleinen Haferparzellen bekannter Blühdaten wurden genau seziert. Es wurde festgestellt, daß DDT-Spritzungen junger Haferpflanzen gegen die erste Generation der Fritfliege auch den Rispenbefall vermindert. Die Spritzung verursacht physikalische Unterschiede zwischen gespritzten und unbehandelten Flächen—Spritzen ergibt nämlich eine höhere Bestandsdichte und Gleichförmigkeit der Daten des Ährenschiebens. Die größere Befallsgefährdung der Hauptkörner gegenüber den Innenkörner wird auf erschiedenen Stufen des Gesamtbefalls festgestellt.Die Taubheit des Hafers wird diskutiert und es werden Befunde mitgeteilt, welche die Theorie stützen, daß eine Art der Taubheit auf frühem Fritfliegenbefall der unreifen Körner beruht.

The spatial distribution of larval and adult thrips (Thysanoptera) was studied on mango panicles, Mangifera indica L., on Penang Island, Malaysia, during two consecutive mango flowering seasons from December 2008 to March 2009 and from August to September 2009. Larval and adult thrips were sampled from mango panicles using the carbon dioxide (CO2) collection technique weekly in treated and untreated orchards. Seasonal abundance and dispersion pattern of thrips were investigated on weed host plants in the treated orchard between June 2008 and March 2009. Spatiotemporal dynamics of larvae and adults was analyzed using Taylor’s Power Law (TPL), Lloyd’s Index (LI), and Green’s Index (GI). Thrips hawaiiensis (Morgan) was the dominant thrips species recovered from mango panicles and weeds in the treated orchard, whereas Scirtothrips dorsalis (Hood) was the most abundant species captured in the untreated orchard. Thrips adults and larvae analyzed via dispersion indices were found to be aggregated in mango panicles in both orchards. The value of the aggregation index (b) of TPL for the total number of adult thrips was significantly higher in the treated orchard than in the untreated orchard, whereas slopes of TPL for the total number of larval thrips did not differ significantly between treated and untreated orchards. All adult thrips species were distributed regularly on the weed plants; however, their larvae were aggregated. It is concluded that pesticide treatment caused adult thrips to become more aggregated on mango panicles, hiding in flower parts that were less exposed to the chemicals.  相似文献

Amaranthus are worldwide attacked mainly by leaf chewers and sucker insects. Stem borers and leaf miners follow in importance, while minor herbivores are leaf rollers, folders, and rasping-sucking insects. The herbivorous community observed on Amaranthus spp. in Argentina was consistent with the information reported worldwide both in guild composition and order proportion. Amaranth plants had a higher number of phytophagous species in their native rather than in its introduced range. Occurrence of insect guilds differed in space and time. The highest density of leaf chewers was observed shortly after the emergence of plants, while higher density of borer and sucker insects coincided with reproductive stages of the crop. The sucking guild was observed mainly at panicles, while the insects within the leaf chewer group were registered in both leaves (92.6%, n?=?746 adults) and inflorescences (7.4%). The borer guild was also recorded in stems and inflorescences; however, the density of larvae in stems was about four times as high as the density observed in panicles (n?=?137 larvae).  相似文献

【目的】明确本地优势天敌黄玛草蛉Mallada basalis对入侵我国的重大农业害虫草地贪夜蛾Spodoptera frugiperda卵及低龄幼虫的捕食能力和生防潜力。【方法】在实验室条件下采用功能反应模型评价了黄玛草蛉2和3龄幼虫对草地贪夜蛾卵及1和2龄幼虫的捕食能力。【结果】黄玛草蛉幼虫对草地贪夜蛾卵和低龄幼虫的捕食量均随猎物密度的升高而增加,最后趋于捕食饱和状态,而其捕食率随猎物密度的升高而逐步下降,对不同发育阶段的草地贪夜蛾均表现为Ⅱ型功能反应。黄玛草蛉2龄幼虫对草地贪夜蛾卵及1和2龄幼虫的瞬时攻击率a分别为0.150, 0.084和0.094,处理时间Th分别为0.282, 0.333和0.519 h,理论日最大捕食量T/Th分别为85106粒、72072头和46.242头;黄玛草蛉3龄幼虫对草地贪夜蛾卵及1和2龄幼虫的瞬时攻击率分别为2.018, 0.288和0.259,处理时间分别为0.102, 0.311和0.375 h,理论日最大捕食量分别为235294粒、77170头和64000头。【结论】黄玛草蛉2和3龄幼虫对草地贪夜蛾卵和低龄幼虫均具较强的捕食能力,其中黄玛草蛉3龄幼虫比2龄幼虫具有更强的捕食效率。  相似文献

The larvae of the ground beetle Notiophilus biguttatus F. (Coleoptera, Carabidae) feed mainly on hemiedaphic Collembola (springtails). The level of humidity required by the larvae lies between that of their prey and that of the adult beetles, and leads them to places where Collembola are abundant. The larvae are able to detect aggregations of Collembola by means of chemical cues. Visual orientation is of no importance in predatory behaviour: the attack is triggered and directed by contact with a springtail. This contact, by the trichobothria of the head, is too gentle to provoke the Collembola to jump.  相似文献

Induced resistance to biotic attackers is thought to be mediated by responses elicited by jasmonic acid (JA), a subset of which are lipoxygenase 3 (LOX3) dependent. To understand the importance of LOX3-mediated insect resistance, we analysed the performance of Manduca sexta larvae on wild-type (WT) and on isogenic Nicotiana attenuata plants silenced in NaLOX3 expression and JA signalling, and we used Waldbauer nutritional indices to measure the pre- and post-ingestive effects. LOX3-mediated defenses reduced larval growth, consumption and frass production. These defenses reduced how efficiently late-instar larvae converted digested food to body mass (ECD). In contrast, LOX3-mediated defenses decreased approximate digestibility (AD) in early instar larvae without affecting the ECD and total food consumption. Larvae of all instars feeding on defended WT plants behaviourally compensate for their reduced body mass by consuming more food per unit of body mass gain. We suggest that larvae feeding on plants silenced in NaLOX3 expression (as-lox) initially increase their AD, which in turn enables them to consume more food in the later stages and consequently, to increase their ECD and efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI). We conclude that N. attenuata's oxylipin-mediated defenses are important for resisting attack from M. sexta larvae, and that Waldbauer nutritional assays reveal behavioural and physiological counter responses of insects to these plant defenses.  相似文献

Direct measurements of phenotypic selection by parasitoids on quantitative traits in herbivorous insects have been rare. I analysed episodes of phenotypic selection on the timing of life-history events in a multivoltine leafmining moth, Phyllonorycter mespilella, and assessed the importance of hymenopterous parasitoids as selective influences. Phyllonorycter mespilella has two consecutive stages of larval development, the sap-feeding (SF) and tissue-feeding (TF) stages. Adult parasitoids host feed predominantly on SF larvae, and oviposit predominantly on TF larvae. Oviposition attack on TF larvae caused positive directional selection on the date of transition to the the TF stage (TF date) in the third generation of P. mespilella in one population in 1991. Overwinter mortality caused negative directional selection on TF date in the third generation in a second population in 1993. No directional or variance selection on TF date was detected in the second population in the second generation of 1993. Parasitoid females accepted SF larvae for oviposition more often in the fall generation than in summer generations in both populations. The relative frequencies of SF and TF larvae may alter the pattern of oviposition attack by parasitoids, and thus the form of phenotypic selection on TF date.  相似文献

The effects of attack by the three predaceous mite speciesPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot,Phytoseius finitimus Ribaga andAmblyseius gossipi Elbadry on the development, reproduction and mortality of the two-spotted spider miteTetranyschus urticae Koch were evaluated after the prey larvae being exposed to attack by these predators for limited periods. Development of the surviving prey immatures was significantly prolonged; this influence was more distinctive when prey larvae were exposed to the predators for a longer period. The number of prey adults which died early was positively correlated with the length of the feeding period allowed to the predators. A substantial reduction in the number of eggs deposited by the prey females was noted, although the oviposition by the prey females was noted, although the oviposition period and adult longivity were not significantly affected.  相似文献

Abstract: Species composition and impact of larval parasitoids during an endemic density phase of a pine forest pest, the common pine sawfly Diprion pini (L.), were investigated by exposure of laboratory-reared larvae of the sawfly to parasitoid attack in natural habitats. Colony-associated host larvae of different instars were exposed continuously from early June until end of September of the years 1994 and 1995 in two pine stands with a different history of pine sawfly outbreaks. Host larvae were exchanged after a defined time interval and those collected up were examined in the laboratory for parasitism. Parasitoid assemblages were shown to be very species poor at both pine stands. The dominant species were the ichneumonid Olesicampe macellator and the tachinid Drino gilva , which reached attack rates on the collected host larvae of 60 and 94%, respectively, during peak activity. The patterns of temporal attack, of multiparasitism, and of superparasitism of these dominant species were studied. In an additional experiment, the response of these species to different host-patch sizes (number of host larvae per colony) were investigated. No aggregative response to higher host-patch densities could be detected. The role and function of these larval parasitoids in the population dynamics of D. pini are discussed.  相似文献

The host-handling behavior of individual female waspsDiglyphys minoeus which attack the larvae of the honeysuckle leaf-miner,Phytomyza lonicerae, include 4 types of behavior: probing, ovipositor insertion, host-feeding, and resting. Ovipositor insertion may either be injection of venom, probing of the host by the sensilla on the ovipositor's tip or egg laying. Three types of attacks were distinguished: oviposition attack for unparasitized larvae, host-feeding attack for unparasitized host larvae and host rejection for previously parasitized host larvae. Oviposition attack was characterized by frequent alternation between probing and ovipositor insertion, long duration of ovipositor insertion and resting, and the long duration of host-handling. Resting behavior is thought to protect the progeny against superparasitism, host-feeding by other wasps or hosts' recovery from paralysis. Host-feeding attack was characterized by frequent alternation between host-feeding and ovipositor insertion and long duration of host-feeding. Host rejection was composed mainly of probing and ovipositor insertion and short handling time.   相似文献

Abstract Helicoverpa armigera oviposition preference for, and larval development on sorghum hybrids with differing resistance to sorghum midge, Stenodiplosis sorghicola , were investigated. When H. armigera larvae were fed seed of resistant and susceptible hybrids in the laboratory there were no differences in larval and pupal sizes or the rate of development. The same result was recorded when larvae fed on panicles on plants in a glasshouse. On some sampling occasions, significantly more eggs were laid on panicles of resistant hybrids in the field. This occurred when plants were in plots and also in a mixed planting. Midge-resistance status did not affect levels of egg parasitism. In a field study using recombinant inbred lines between a midge-resistant and a midge-susceptible line, no relationship was found between level of resistance and oviposition of H. armigera . We conclude that, although midge-resistant hybrids are sometimes preferred for oviposition by H. armigera, the resistance per se does not determine this preference. Egg survival, larval survival, development and resultant damage are not significantly affected by the midge-resistance status of the host.  相似文献

Light plays a key role in the development of biological rhythms in fish. Recent research in Senegal sole has revealed that spawning and hatching rhythms, larval development, and growth performance are strongly influenced by lighting conditions. However, the effect of light on the daily patterns of behavior remains unexplored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different photoperiod regimes and white, blue, and red light on the activity rhythms and foraging behavior of Solea senegalensis larvae up to 40 days posthatching (DPH). To this end, eggs were collected immediately after spawning during the night and exposed to continuous white light (LL), continuous darkness (DD), or light-dark (LD) 12L:12D cycles of white (LD(W)), blue (LD(B), λ(peak) = 463 nm), or red light (LD(R), λ(peak) = 685 nm). A filming scenario was designed to video record activity rhythms during day and night times using infrared lights. The results revealed that activity rhythms in LD(B) and LD(W) changed from diurnal to nocturnal on days 9 to 10 DPH, coinciding with the onset of metamorphosis. In LD(R), sole larvae remained nocturnal throughout the experimental period, while under LL and DD, larvae failed to show any rhythm. In addition, larvae exposed to LD(B) and LD(W) had the highest prey capture success rate (LD(B) = 82.6% ± 2.0%; LD(W) = 75.1% ± 1.3%) and attack rate (LD(B) = 54.3% ± 1.9%; LD(W) = 46.9% ± 3.0%) during the light phase (ML) until 9 DPH. During metamorphosis, the attack and capture success rates in these light conditions were higher during the dark phase (MD), when they showed the same nocturnal behavioral pattern as under LD(R) conditions. These results revealed that the development of sole larvae is tightly controlled by light characteristics, underlining the importance of the natural underwater photoenvironment (LD cycles of blue wavelengths) for the normal onset of the rhythmic behavior of fish larvae during early ontogenesis.  相似文献

Organic lettuce, Lactuca sativa L., growers on the Central Coast of California rely on conservation biological control to manage Nasonovia ribisnigri Mosley (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and other aphid pests of lettuce. In 2006, we carried out five replicated field trials to determine the importance of syrphid larvae in the suppression of N. ribisnigri and other aphids infesting organic romaine lettuce. We used Entrust, a spinosad-based insecticide approved for use on organic farms, to suppress syrphid larvae in aphid-infested romaine. Romaine treated with Entrust was unmarketable at harvest because of aphid infestation, whereas insecticide-free romaine was marketable. Syrphid larvae composed 85% or more of total predators in most trials, and they were the only predators consistently recovered from romaine that was infested with aphids early and largely aphid-free by harvest. The species mix of nonsyrphid predators varied from site to site. Applications of Entrust suppressed nonsyrphid predators in two trials, and so was an imperfect tool for selectively suppressing syrphid larvae. The relative importance of syrphid larvae and other predators in the conservation biological control of aphids in organic romaine is discussed. We conclude that syrphid larvae are primarily responsible for the suppression of aphids in organic romaine on California's Central Coast.  相似文献

The life history of Corymbites cupreus F. is described, and its economic importance is assessed from field observations and laboratory experiments. The females are on the wing in May and June, egg-laying takes place in June and the incubation period is about 34 days. The larval stage probably occupies 5 years under field conditions and pupation occurs towards the end of July or beginning of August. The imagines emerge in about 21 days, but they do not always remain in their earthen pupal cells until the following spring as do several other Elaterid species. The larvae feed principally on the roots and underground stems of plants, but they can exist on decayed organic matter in the soil. Individually they are far more injurious to potatoes, wheat, oats, barley and other cultivated crops than those of either Agriotes spp. or Athous niger, but because they are restricted to comparatively high altitudes, they are seldom pests of major importance. Birds and cara-bid larvae readily feed on them and they are also subject to attack by a hymeno-pteran parasite and the fungi, Metarrhizium anisopliae (Metsch) Sor. and Synglio-cladium cleoni (Wize) Petch. All attempts to obtain control of the larvae by the use of these fungi failed.  相似文献

Abstract  In south-eastern Queensland, Australia, sorghum planted in early spring usually escapes sorghum midge, Stenodiplosis sorghicola , attack. Experiments were conducted to better understand the role of winter diapause in the population dynamics of this pest. Emergence patterns of adult midge from diapausing larvae on the soil surface and at various depths were investigated during spring to autumn of 1987/88–1989/90. From 1987/88 to 1989/90, 89%, 65% and 98% of adult emergence, respectively, occurred during November and December. Adult emergence from larvae diapausing on the soil surface was severely reduced due to high mortality attributed to surface soil temperatures in excess of 40°C, with much of this mortality occurring between mid-September and mid-October. Emergence of adults from the soil surface was considerably delayed in the 1988/89 season compared with larvae buried at 5 or 10 cm which had similar emergence patterns for all three seasons. In 1989/90, when a 1-cm-deep treatment was included, there was a 392% increase in adult emergence from this treatment compared with deeper treatments. Some diapausing larvae on the surface did not emerge at the end of summer in only 1 year (1989/90), when 28.0% of the larvae on the surface remained in diapause, whereas only 0.8% of the buried larvae remained in diapause. We conclude that the pattern of emergence explains why spring plantings of sorghum in south-eastern Queensland usually escape sorghum midge attack.  相似文献

The potential impact of the larval feeding by Alagoasa extrema Jacoby (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Alticinae) on potted plants of its host Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae), a weed of major importance in South Africa, was examined. Under quarantine laboratory conditions, 2-month old plants of L. camara variety 029 White Pink were exposed to different larval feeding densities for a period of 18 days (completion of the larval stage). The above-ground dry mass of plants was significantly reduced following attack by larvae at densities of 5 larvae per plant (20% reduction) and 10 larvae per plant (28% reduction), when compared to unattacked plants. Attack by larvae over this short period had no significant impact on root growth. This demonstrates that A. extrema, once established in climatically favourable areas, could well augment other established agents in defoliating L. camara stands, reducing the accumulation of reserves and the competitiveness of the weed.  相似文献

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease, whose main biological vector is Aedes aegypti. This mosquito colonizes tropical areas where the disease is endemic. The most obvious action against dengue is attacking its vector. Biological control appears to be an alternative approach, using natural enemies of the mosquitoes, such as predatory copepods. Thus, the morphological study of the damage caused by copepods is important to understand its predatory capacity. Twenty-five A. aegypti larvae were exposed to the copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides and the damage caused by the copepods was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The larvae showed damage mainly at the anal segment, the siphon and the abdomen; only three attacks to the head were observed. The size of the siphon might be of importance in determining whether or not a copepod will attack a mosquito larva.  相似文献

The fate of vicilins ingested by Callosobruchus maculatus and the physiological importance of these proteins in larvae and adults were investigated. Vicilins were quantified by ELISA in the haemolymph and fat body during larval development (2nd to 4th instars), in pupae and adults, as well as in ovaries and eggs. Western blot analysis demonstrated that the majority of absorbed vicilins were degraded in the fat body. Tracing the fate of vicilins using FITC revealed that the FITC-vicilin complex was present inside cells of the fat body of the larvae and in the fat bodies of both male and female adult C. maculatus. Labelled vicilin was also detected in ovocytes and eggs. Based on the results presented here, we propose that following absorption, vicilins accumulate in the fat body, where they are partially degraded. These peptides are retained throughout the development of the insects and eventually are sequestered by the eggs. It is possible that accumulation in the eggs is a defensive strategy against pathogen attack as these peptides are known to have antimicrobial activity. Quantifications performed on internal organs from larvae of C. maculatus exposed to extremely dry seeds demonstrated that the vicilin concentration in the haemolymph and fat body was significantly higher when compared to larvae fed on control seeds. These results suggest that absorbed vicilins may also be involved in the survival of larvae in dry environments.  相似文献
