Egg-to-fry development and survival of brown trout Salmo trutta were compared in two rivers of the Pyrenean piedmont, the Nive d'Arnéguy, with few human activities, and the Nive des Aldudes, with many anthropogenic activities including 11 fish farms and two sewage treatment plants (STPs). Survival was estimated between spawning (early December) and emergence time (early March) by means of capsules, 7 cm3 in volume, filled with green eggs then inserted into the gravel of artificial redds at spawning sites. In the Nive des Aldudes, three sets of conditions were studied: a fish farm near the springs, a fish farm and an STP in a village, and a series of fish farms and an STP in a village. In each situation, two artificial redds were created upstream and two others downstream from the fish farms. In the Nive d'Arnéguy, four sites were equipped: each of the two downstream sites with two artificial redds, and the two upstream sites with one redd. Substratum characteristics (proportion of fine particles) and the quality of surface and interstitial water (oxygen content, ammonia and nitrite nitrogen) were periodically measured. There was no redd substratum difference between sites upstream and downstream of fish farms. Survival to fry emergence was higher in the Nive d'Arnéguy (63·5%) than in the Nive des Aldudes (47·7%). In this latter river, the nitrogen released from the STPs was 0·5% that from fish farms. Fish farming impaired survival close to fish farm effluents (31·6%), as compared to survival upstream (63·6%), and induced a development delay during the yolk-sac fry stage. These differences were mainly linked to a drop in the dissolved oxygen content in interstitial water induced by the nitrogen flow in surface and interstitial waters.  相似文献

In 30-day exposures in artificial soft water medium, survival of brown trout alevins was not affected by low pH (4.5,4.8, 5.4), by low calcium concentration (10.25 μmol l−1) or by manganese (≤20 μmol l−1), but was impaired by aluminium (6–8 μmol l−1) at low calcium concentration (10 μmol l−1) irrespective of pH (4.5 or 5.4). Manganese (6.6, 20 μmol l−1) impaired net calcium uptake and calcium deposition in the skeleton at low calcium concentration (25 μmol l−1) irrespective of pH. Aluminium (2–8 μmol l−1) impaired gross development, net uptake of calcium, potassium and sodium, and calcium deposition in the skeleton, and slightly increased the net loss of magnesium, some of these effects being more severe at calcium concentration 10 μmol l−1 than 50 μmol l−1, and some more severe at pH 5.4 than pH 4.5. Net uptake of calcium and sodium were impaired at low pH (4.5, 4.8), and skeletal calcium deposition was impaired at low calcium concentration (10 μmol l−1), but these effects of low pH and low calcium concentration were slight compared with those of the trace metals. The possible role of trace metals in reports of the deleterious effects on fish of low pH levels is discussed.  相似文献

Salmon embryos, age 48–81 days post-fertilization (dpf), were incubated under three different temperature and photoperiod regimes to test the effects of incubation conditions on otolith ring deposition. Otolith rings were first observed at 50 dpf and certain developmental events were marked by distinct, heavy rings. The rate of ring deposition increased with increasing temperature and exposure to light, ranging from 0·50 to 2·33 rings per day. The possible relation to physiological activity as measured by oxygen consumption is discussed.  相似文献

An improvement in water quality in the estuary of the River Thames in recent years, coupled with the return of adult Atlantic salmon following artificial stocking of the headwaters with parr and of the lower river with smolts, has provided an opportunity to define the dissolved oxygen requirements of adult fish ascending the estuary to reach fresh water. Between July and September 1984 the fish traversed a length of 30 km where the concentration of dissolved oxygen was at its lowest, the 5-percentile and median values being 1.6–2.6 and 3.5–5.9 mg l−1, respectively, depending upon exact location. Within this zone there was a length of about 20 km in which the minimum at any one time during the period was always less than 5mg l−1 and a shorter length of 15 km in which it was always less than 4.7 mg l−1, and it is likely that some fish experienced even lower values during their upstream passage. Over lengths of 1, 10 and 30 km, for example, the 10-percentiles were 2, 2.2 and 2.8 mg l−1, respectively, the medians were 3.6, 3.8 and 4.3 mg l−1, respectively and the 90-percentiles were 4.8, 4.9 and 5.3 mg l, respectively. The water temperature during August, when most of the fish were caught, was never lower than 19°C and there was a length of estuary of at least 20 km where it exceeded 22°C.  相似文献

Summary Survival and body composition of starving gypsy moth larvae initially reared on aspen foliage or artificial diet differeing in nitrogen (N) and carbohydrate concentration were examined under laboratory conditions. Diet nitrogen concentration strongly affected starvation resistance and body composition, but diet carbohydrate content had no effects on these. Within any single diet treatment, greater body mass afforded greater resistance to starvation. However, starving larvae reared on 1.5% N diet survived nearly three days longer than larvae reared on 3.5% N diet. Larvae reared on artificial diet survived longer than larvae reared on aspen. Differences in survival of larvae reared on artificial diet with low and high nitrogen concentrations could not be attributed to variation in respiration rates, but were associated with differences in body composition. Although percentage lipid in larvae was unaffected by diet nitrogen concentration, larvae reared on 1.5% N diet had a higher percentage carbohydrate and lower percentage protein in their bodies prior to starvation than larvae reared on 3.5% N diet. Hence, larger energy reserves of larvae reared on low nitrogen diet may have contributed to their greater starvation resistance. Whereas survival under food stress was lower for larvae reared on high N diets, growth rates and pupal weights were higher, suggesting a tradeoff between rapid growth and survival. Larger body size does not necessarily reflect larger energy reserves, and, in fact, larger body size accured via greater protein accumulation may be at the expense of energy reserves. Large, fast-growing larvae may be more fit when food is abundant, but this advantage may be severely diminished under food stress. The potential ecological and evolutionary implications of a growth/survival tradeoff are discussed.  相似文献

Dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity and alkalinity of surface and subsurface interstitial waters were investigated at Mill Creek (a small, rural, predominantly sandy stream in east Texas).Dissolved oxygen concentration tended to decrease with sediment depth, while conductivity and alkalinity did not significantly change with substrate depth. Surface water pH was significantly higher than interstitial water (p = 0.05).Chemical analyses of subsurface water from a pre- to post-storm event showed a depression in dissolved oxygen concentration in moderate and deep interstitial waters, immediately following the return of stream base flow, with the deeper strata returning to pre-storm oxygen levels four days later.A thermal convective current mechanism is proposed which would serve to transport surface water downward into these deeper interstices.  相似文献

Cohesive sediment deposits in the Three Gorges Reservoir, China, were used to investigate physical and geochemical properties, biofilm mass, and erosion and deposition characteristics. Biofilm cultivation was performed in a recirculating flume for three different periods (5, 10 and 15 days) under ambient temperature and with sufficient nutrients supply. Three groups of size-fractionated sediment were sequentially used, including 0–0.02 mm, 0.02–0.05 mm and 0.05–0.10 mm. Desired conditions for erosion and deposition were designed by managing high bed shear stress at the narrow part of upstream flume and low shear stress at the wide part of downstream flume. Biostabilization and transport characteristics of the biofilm coated sediment (bio-sediment) were strongly influenced by the cultivation period, and the results were compared with clean sediment. The bio-sediment was more resistant to erosion, and the mean shear stress was increased by factors of 2.65, 2.73 and 5.01 for sediment with 5, 10 and 15 days of biofilm growth compared with clean sediment, resulting in less sediment being eroded from the bed. Simultaneously, the settling velocity was smaller for bio-sediment due to higher organic content and porosity (i.e., lower density). Additionally, there was a smaller probability of deposition for sediment with a longer cultivation period after erosion, resulting in more retention time in aquatic systems. About 30% of the total area of Lake Batata (Amazon) was impacted by the disposal of bauxite tailings originated from the process of washing bauxite. This effluent, composed by fine particles of clay and water, settled on top of the natural sediment, originating a new substratum with a different physical and chemical composition. This phenomenon created a new distinct habitat (impacted sediment) influencing the benthic community. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of bioturbation by Campsurus notatus (Ephemeroptera: Polymitarcytidae) on potential gas fluxes in the sediment of natural and impacted areas of the lake. The natural sediment had a significantly higher methane concentration when compared to the impacted one. In incubated sediment cores, the presence of C. notatus nymphs resulted in a significant increase in oxygen consumption and methane and carbon dioxide release to the water column. The effect of the presence of nymphs on methane was ambiguous. The C. notatus nymphs strongly decreased methane concentration in natural sediment samples, probably because of the enhancement of the oxic sediment area. However, this effect was not observed in impacted samples. Finally, the new substratum of Lake Batata decreased methane concentration in sediment and water column. C. notatus nymphs demonstrated to have a significant role on gas flux (methane and CO2) from sediment to water column as well as on oxygen consumption in Lake Batata, consequently influencing the carbon cycle in this lake. Growth, density and production of juvenile Atlantic salmon and brown trout were studied in three different sections of the Kvassheimsåna River in south-western Norway from 1979 to 1983. Section 1. in the upper part of the river, is located above a waterfall impassable for migratory salmonids and is surrounded by grazing land. Sections 2 and 3, in the middle and lower parts of the river, are influenced by agricultural activity. Total nitrogen concentration varied between 250 and 1000 μg l ?1 in section 1 and 1500 and 2500 μg l?1 in sections 2 and 3. Total phosphorus (Tot-P) concentrations also increased with decreasing altitude: 19–46 μg l?1 in section I and 31–101 μg l ?1 in sections 2 and 3. The number of 0 + salmon in sections 2 and 3 varied between 30.1 and 167.8 specimens 100 m ?2, with means 90.2 and 95.2 specimens 100 m ?2:, respectively; the density of 1 + salmon, with mean values of 16.3 and 51.0 specimens 100m?2 was significantly correlated with the original fry density. The growth rate of 0+ salmon was not inversely related to cohort density, but was significantly so for 1 + salmon. Mean annual salmon production in section 2 was 1595 g 100 m?2 year 1, and in section 3 was 841 g 100m?2 year 1. A logarithmic function gave the best curve fit between salmon production and mean annual biomass. Thus, production levelled off for the highest values recorded in section 2, and perhaps approached the carrying capacity of the stream. A multiple regression analysis showed that yearly variation in 1 + salmon density was the single factor accounting for most of the total variability in production (60%). Variation in water temperature and nutrient content were not significantly related to variation in fish production. Densities of brown trout were low in all sections (<20 specimens 100m ?2). Fry density was highest in section 3 and parr density in section 1. All age groups of sympatric brown trout grew significantly faster in sections 2 and 3 compared with allopatric brown trout in section 1.  相似文献

The quality of the surface water of Gotland (Sweden) streams was good, and did not limit sea trout egg-to-fry (ETF) survival. The oxygen concentration of the interstitial water was positively correlated to the permeability of the stream bed, and to the geometric mean diameter of the substratum. When the oxygen at 15 cm inside the stream bed was undiminished from surface values, the permeability of the stream bed was at least 6000 cm h–1 and the geometric mean diameter of the substratum at least 15.0 mm. When the interstitial oxygen concentration increased, the interstitial ammonium concentration decreased, the NO2 concentration remained stable and the NO3 concentration increased. The ETF survival up to hatching was highly dependent upon the oxygen concentration of the interstitial water. For survival from hatching to emergence, the geometric mean diameter of the substratum was the most important factor. ETF survival >50% was observed where the interstitial oxygen concentration averaged at least 10mg I-1, the substratum permeability at least 2000cm h-1 and the substratum geometric mean diameter at least 15 mm. Other factors, such as overdigging and drying out of the spawning grounds could increase the ETF mortality.  相似文献

Sedimentation resulting from storms may have been one of the reasons for the elimination of submersed aquatic vegetation from the tidal Potomac River in the late 1930's. Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the effects of different depths of overlying sediment and composition of sediment on the survival of Vallisneria americana Michx (wildcelery) grown from tubers. Survival of plants grown from tubers decreased significantly with increasing sediment depth. Survival of tubers declined from 90% or more when buried in 10 cm to no survival in greater than 25 cm of sediment. Survival with depth in sand was significantly lower than in silty clay.Field investigation determined that the majority of tubers in Vallisneria beds are distributed between 10 and 20 cm in depth in silty clay and between 5 and 15 cm in depth in sand. Based on the field distribution of tubers and on the percent survival of plants growing from tubers at each depth in the laboratory experiment, we suggest that the deposition of 10 cm or more of sediment by severe storms such as occurred in the 1930s could contribute to the loss of vegetation in the tidal Potomac River.  相似文献

Among 332 parr from the Swedish River Grönån examined by electrophoresis, 44 (13%) were hybrids between Atlantic salmon and brown trout. The hybrid frequencies in three sections of Grönån were significantly different (23. 8 and 2%). The aim of this research was to evaluate the biological behaviour of melonworm at different natural and artificial diets. Squash cultivar jacaré, cucumber, summer squash and an artificial diets developed by Hensley & Hammond for the sugarcane borer were tried. The research was carried out in the Laboratório de Entomologia do Centro de Ciências Agrárias of the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, in climatized room at 25 +/- 1 masculineC, relative humidity of 70 +/- 10% and 14h photofase. The caterpillars fed on each substrate during the whole life cycle. Differences in duration of the larval period, larvae and pupae survival, adult longevity and number of eggs were registered between the substrates. The results show that the best diet for rearing is the artificial one. Between the natural diets the cucumber showed the best results.  相似文献

Growth dynamics of juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., from two sections of the Narcea River and one of the Esva River (Northern Spain) were examined in relation to the development of bimodality in their size–frequency distributions. Size–bimodality was clearer under intermediate growth (section A) than under relatively fast or slow growth. The proportion of fish entering the upper modal group increase with growth intensity. Composition of upper and lower modal groups became fixed prior to December, and at this time both groups separated on the 90–95 mm interval. Fish exhibiting smolt appearance in late March (larger than 130 mm) had already been upper group fish in December, while parr-like fish and those that remained in the river by May (potential 2-year-old smolts) had formed the lower modal group. Anadromous salmon catch in the Narcea River was mostly of previously 1-year-old smolts (97.6%), of which 94% were larger than 100 mm by their first winter. In the Esva River, slow growth of juveniles is consistent with a large proportion of 2-year-old smolts (47.9%) among anadromous salmon. Both juvenile samples and scale analysis of anadromous salmon indicate that 2-year-old smolts were larger than 1-year-olds. Early disappearance of the former (before March) is, at least, partially related to earlier migration of large fish, since sexual maturity of parr does not provide a complete explanation. The Narcea stock have a minimum length at smolting of about 130 mm and an optimum smolt size in the 155–175 mm interval. The dispersion of salmon and trout of 0 +, 1 + and 2 + age classes was examined by electrofishing 12 sections of a stream in Perthshire, Scotland at the end of the growing season in September to October in 1972 and 1976. In 1972 sections ranged in surface area from 21 to 122 m2 and had volumes of 5.0–17.3 m3 and when surveyed in 1976 surface areas were 15–106 m2 and volumes 2.1–6.7 m3. In 1976 widths and areas of sections were 63–87% of the values for 1972, depths were 39–68% and volumes 28–52% of the earlier values. These differences were due to 1976 being drier and warmer. In both years, all sections contained 0 + and 1 + age classes of salmon and trout and some sections contained 2 + age salmon and trout. The total density of fish in a section ranged from 1.9 to 3.9 m−2 in 1972 and from 3.72 to 6.08 m−2 in 1976. There was an inverse relationship, significant in 1972 only, between the density of 0 + salmon and that of 1 + trout in the different sections. Densities of both 0 + and 1 + salmon in the sections were inversely correlated, and those of 0 + and 1 + trout were directly correlated, with area of water deeper than 10 cm.  相似文献

An allopatric cohort of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., introduced to a small previously fishless stream was studied from parr to the smolt stages. In May 3900 0+ parr (mean total length 30mm) were planted at three different densities in habitats with slow, intermediate and fast water velocities. During the first year, high mortality occurred during the first 7 weeks after planting in May, and in September–October. Survival from May 1985 to April 1986, before the smolt emigration, was24.8%. The smolt yield 1 year after planting was 15.5%. It is suggested that the high survival was caused by low competition. Most of the redistribution of the fish took place during the first months. Type of planting habitat affected the timing of redistribution. The parr left slow-flowing, deep habitats with fine substrate soon after planting, while redistribution was slowest in the fastest flowing habitats with coarse substrate. The observed avoidance of slow, deep habitat types in the absence of interspecific competition, suggests that this may be a fixed behavioural response, and not due to competition. Long movements, up to 800 m, were recorded only within the first 7 weeks after planting. The effect of planting densities on population density was most pronounced immediately after planting in the fast and also intermediate habitats. Planting density effects declined and were not detectable after 1 year. The effect of habitat type on fish numbers and biomass was pronounced irrespective of planting densities. Growth was fastest in the intermediate habitat, and at the lower planting densities. Production was 7.2 g m−2 the first summer-autumn. Due to smolt emigration, few fish remained in the stream the second summer-autumn, and the production was 1.0 g m−2.  相似文献

The experiment was made in an attempt to modify the usual relationship in which young trout grow faster than young salmon in streams in which they occur together. A stretch of a trout stream was stocked with advanced salmon eggs, which produced fry earlier than the trout eggs laid naturally. The salmon grew faster than the trout and were longer than the trout at the end of the growing season. The mean length of 77.7 mm attained by the salmon is the largest known size reached by salmon in their first year when feeding on natural food supplies in streams in Scotland. Survival of infective juveniles of Steinernema carpocapsae and Steinernema glaseri gradually declined during 16 weeks of observation as the tested soil pH decreased from pH 8 to pH 4. Survival of both species of Steinernema dropped sharply after 1 week at pH 10. Survival or S. carpocapsae and S. glaseri was similar at pH 4, 6, and 8 during the first 4 weeks, but S. carpocapsae survival was significantly greater than S. glaseri at pH 10 through 16 weeks. Steinernema carpocapsae and S. glaseri that had been stored at pH 4, 6, and 8 for 16 weeks, and at pH 10 for 1 or more weeks were not infective to Galleria mellonella larvae. Steinernema carpocapsae survival was significantly greater than that of S. glaseri at oxygen:nitrogen ratios of 1:99, 5:95, and 10:90 during the first 2 weeks, and survival of both nematode species declined sharply to less than 20% after 4 weeks. Survival of both nematode species significantly decreased after 8 weeks as the tested oxygen concentrations decreased from 20 to 1%, and no nematode survival was recorded after 16 weeks. Steinernema carpocapsae pathogenicity was significantly greater than that of S. glaseri during the first 2 weeks. No nematode pathogenicity was recorded at oxygen concentrations of 1, 5, and 10% after 2 weeks and at 20% after 16 weeks.  相似文献

Microalgal biofilms are associated with considerable variability in the properties of natural sediments, yet little effort has been made to isolate micro-scale spatial and temporal changes in sediment properties caused by the growth of a biofilm. Understanding the changes associated with biofilm growth and quantifying the time scales over which these changes occur is important for developing suitable experimental designs and for understanding how biofilms mediate sediment properties and processes. The development of a microphytobenthic biofilm and associated changes in the sediment was investigated over 45 days in the laboratory. The biogeochemical properties of the sediment: bulk density, water content, chlorophyll a concentration and colloidal carbohydrate concentration were measured on a sub-millimetre scale in the top 2 mm. The erosion threshold was measured with a Cohesive Strength Meter (CSM). Biofilm development was rapid, with changes in the properties occurring after 1 day and a visible film forming after just 3 days. The largest changes in sediment properties tended to occur in the surface 200 μm through time, with some variables also showing a differing response with depth. There were significant changes in water content, chlorophyll a concentration, colloidal carbohydrate concentration and erosion threshold in the surface 2 mm, with a general trend to increase with time. Bulk density was highly variable and did not show a consistent pattern of change with time. Erosion threshold was positively correlated with water content, chlorophyll a and colloidal carbohydrate in the surface 200 μm and these were also positively correlated with each other. Low Temperature Scanning Electron Microscopy (LTSEM) images revealed changes in the surface sediment structure and the formation of a thick multi-layer biofilm. The rapidity of biofilm growth and development and the associated changes to the sediment should be considered when designing experiments that investigate biofilms and properties of sediments and/or that involve biocide treatments or disturbance to the sediment.  相似文献
