Understanding behavioral strategies employed by animals to maximize fitness in the face of environmental heterogeneity, variability, and uncertainty is a central aim of animal ecology. Flexibility in behavior may be key to how animals respond to climate and environmental change. Using a mechanistic modeling framework for simultaneously quantifying the effects of habitat preference and intrinsic movement on space use at the landscape scale, we investigate how movement and habitat selection vary among individuals and years in response to forage quality–quantity tradeoffs, environmental conditions, and variable annual climate. We evaluated the association of dynamic, biotic forage resources and static, abiotic landscape features with large grazer movement decisions in an experimental landscape, where forage resources vary in response to prescribed burning, grazing by a native herbivore, the plains bison (Bison bison bison), and a continental climate. Our goal was to determine how biotic and abiotic factors mediate bison movement decisions in a nutritionally heterogeneous grassland. We integrated spatially explicit relocations of GPS‐collared bison and extensive vegetation surveys to relate movement paths to grassland attributes over a time period spanning a regionwide drought and average weather conditions. Movement decisions were affected by foliar crude content and low stature forage biomass across years with substantial interannual variation in the magnitude of selection for forage quality and quantity. These differences were associated with interannual differences in climate and growing conditions from the previous year. Our results provide experimental evidence for understanding how the forage quality–quantity tradeoff and fine‐scale topography drives fine‐scale movement decisions under varying environmental conditions.  相似文献

Developmental constraints and selective pressures interact to determine the strength of allometric scaling relationships between body size and the size of morphological traits among related species. Different traits are expected to relate to body size with different scaling exponents, depending on how their function changes disproportionately with increasing body size. For trematodes parasitic in vertebrate guts, the risk of being dislodged should increase disproportionately with body size, whereas basic physiological functions are more likely to increase in proportion to changes in body size. Allometric scaling exponents for attachment structures should thus be higher than those for other structures and should be higher for trematode families using endothermic hosts than for those using ectotherms, given the feeding and digestive characteristics of these hosts. These predictions are tested with data on 363 species from 13 trematode families. Sizes of four morphological structures were investigated, two associated with attachment (oral and ventral suckers) and the other two with feeding and reproduction (pharynx and cirrus sac). The scaling exponents obtained were generally low, the majority falling between 0.2 and 0.5. There were no consistent differences within families between the magnitude of scaling exponents for different structures. Also, there was no difference in the values of scaling exponents between families exploiting endothermic hosts and those using ectotherms. There were strong correlations across families between the values of the scaling exponents for the oral sucker, the ventral sucker and the pharynx: in families where the size of one trait increases relatively steeply as a function of body size, the same is generally true of the other traits. These results suggest either that developmental constraints link several morphological features independently of their specific roles or that similar selection pressures operate on different structures, leading to covariation of scaling exponents. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 96 , 533–540.  相似文献

Septins form a cortical scaffold at the yeast mother-bud neck that restricts the diffusion of cortical proteins between the mother and bud and serves as a signaling center that is important for governing various cell functions. After cell cycle commitment in late G(1), septins are assembled into a narrow ring at the future bud site, which spreads to form a mature septin hourglass immediately after bud emergence. Although several septin regulators have been identified, it is unclear how they cooperate to assemble the septin scaffold. We have examined septin localization in isogenic strains containing single or multiple mutations in eight septin organization genes (CDC42, RGA1, RGA2, BEM3, CLA4, GIN4, NAP1, and ELM1). Our results suggest that these regulators act largely in parallel to promote either the initial assembly of the septin ring (CDC42, RGA1, RGA2, BEM3, and CLA4) or the conversion of the ring to a stable hourglass structure at the neck (GIN4, NAP1, and ELM1). Aberrant septin localization patterns in mutant strains could be divided into apparently discrete categories, but individual strains displayed heterogeneous defects, and there was no clear-cut correspondence between the specific mutations and specific categories of defect. These findings suggest that when they are deprived of their normal regulators, septin scaffolds collapse into a limited repertoire of aberrant states in which the nature of the mutant regulators influences the probability of a given aberrant state.  相似文献

Background

Through social interactions, individuals affect one another’s phenotype. In such cases, an individual’s phenotype is affected by the direct (genetic) effect of the individual itself and the indirect (genetic) effects of the group mates. Using data on individual phenotypes, direct and indirect genetic (co)variances can be estimated. Together, they compose the total genetic variance that determines a population’s potential to respond to selection. However, it can be difficult or expensive to obtain individual phenotypes. Phenotypes on traits such as egg production and feed intake are, therefore, often collected on group level. In this study, we investigated whether direct, indirect and total genetic variances, and breeding values can be estimated from pooled data (pooled by group). In addition, we determined the optimal group composition, i.e. the optimal number of families represented in a group to minimise the standard error of the estimates.

Methods

This study was performed in three steps. First, all research questions were answered by theoretical derivations. Second, a simulation study was conducted to investigate the estimation of variance components and optimal group composition. Third, individual and pooled survival records on 12 944 purebred laying hens were analysed to investigate the estimation of breeding values and response to selection.

Results

Through theoretical derivations and simulations, we showed that the total genetic variance can be estimated from pooled data, but the underlying direct and indirect genetic (co)variances cannot. Moreover, we showed that the most accurate estimates are obtained when group members belong to the same family. Additional theoretical derivations and data analyses on survival records showed that the total genetic variance and breeding values can be estimated from pooled data. Moreover, the correlation between the estimated total breeding values obtained from individual and pooled data was surprisingly close to one. This indicates that, for survival in purebred laying hens, loss in response to selection will be small when using pooled instead of individual data.

Conclusions

Using pooled data, the total genetic variance and breeding values can be estimated, but the underlying genetic components cannot. The most accurate estimates are obtained when group members belong to the same family.  相似文献

Myogenic factor 5 plays actively roles in the regulation of myogenesis. The aims of this study are to identify the evolution information of MYF5 protein among 10 domestic and mammalian animals, to uncover the expression patterns of MYF5 gene in calves and adults of Qinchuan cattle, and to expose the genetic variants of the MYF5 gene and explore its effect on cattle growth traits and beef quality traits in Qinchuan cattle. The bioinformatics results showed that the MYF5 proteins highly conserved in different mammalian or domestic animals apart from chicken. The expression level of MYF5 gene in the heart, muscle, lung, large intestine and liver was greater than that of other tissues. PCR amplicons sequencing identified four novel SNPs at g.5738A>G, g.5785C>T and g.5816A>G in the 3rd exon region and g.6535A>G in the 3’ UTR. Genotypic frequencies of g.5785C>T was harshly deviated from the HWE (P < .05). Genetic diversity was low or intermediate for the four SNPs and those SNPs were in the weak linkage disequilibrium. Association analysis results indicated g.5785C>T, g.5816A>G and g.6535A>G significant effect on growth performance and beef quality traits of Qinchuan cattle. H1H3 diplotype had greater body size and better beef quality. All the results implicate that the MYF5 gene might be applied as a promising candidate gene in Qinchuan cattle breeding.  相似文献

? Below-ground microbial communities influence plant diversity, plant productivity, and plant community composition. Given these strong ecological effects, are interactions with below-ground microbes also important for understanding natural selection on plant traits? ? Here, we manipulated below-ground microbial communities and the soil moisture environment on replicated populations of Brassica rapa to examine how microbial community structure influences selection on plant traits and mediates plant responses to abiotic environmental stress. ? In soils with experimentally simplified microbial communities, plants were smaller, had reduced chlorophyll content, produced fewer flowers, and were less fecund when compared with plant populations grown in association with more complex soil microbial communities. Selection on plant growth and phenological traits also was stronger when plants were grown in simplified, less diverse soil microbial communities, and these effects typically were consistent across soil moisture treatments. ? Our results suggest that microbial community structure affects patterns of natural selection on plant traits. Thus, the below-ground microbial community can influence evolutionary processes, just as recent studies have demonstrated that microbial diversity can influence plant community and ecosystem processes.  相似文献

The nutritional traits of maize kernels are important for human and animal nutrition, and these traits have undergone selection to meet the diverse nutritional needs of humans. However, our knowledge of the genetic basis of selecting for kernel nutritional traits is limited. Here, we identified both single and epistatic quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that contributed to the differences of oil and carotenoid traits between maize and teosinte. Over half of teosinte alleles of single QTLs increased the values of the detected oil and carotenoid traits. Based on the pleiotropism or linkage information of the identified single QTLs, we constructed a trait–locus network to help clarify the genetic basis of correlations among oil and carotenoid traits. Furthermore, the selection features and evolutionary trajectories of the genes or loci underlying variations in oil and carotenoid traits revealed that these nutritional traits produced diverse selection events during maize domestication and improvement. To illustrate more, a mutator distance–relative transposable element (TE) in intron 1 of DXS2, which encoded a rate‐limiting enzyme in the methylerythritol phosphate pathway, was identified to increase carotenoid biosynthesis by enhancing DXS2 expression. This TE occurs in the grass teosinte, and has been found to have undergone selection during maize domestication and improvement, and is almost fixed in yellow maize. Our findings not only provide important insights into evolutionary changes in nutritional traits, but also highlight the feasibility of reintroducing back into commercial agricultural germplasm those nutritionally important genes hidden in wild relatives.  相似文献

Many biological processes rely on protein-protein interactions. These processes include signal transduction, cell cycle regulation, gene regulation, and viral assembly and replication. Moreover, many proteins and enzymes manifest their function as oligomers. We describe here an efficient means to sift through large combinatorial libraries and identify molecules that block the interaction of target proteins in vivo. The power of this approach is demonstrated by the identification of nine-residue peptides from a combinatorial library that inhibit the intracellular dimerization of HIV-1 protease. Fewer than 1 in 106 peptides do so. In vitro biochemical analyses of one such peptide demonstrate that it acts by dissociating HIV-1 protease into monomers, which are inactive catalysts. Inhibition is enhanced further by dimerizing the peptide. This approach enables the facile identification of new molecules that control cellular processes.  相似文献

In order to achieve improvements in production efficiency in livestock, herds of high sexual precocity and good fertility are needed. These traits increase the availability of animals in herd, either for sale or selection, allowing both greater selective intensity and greater genetic progress. This study aimed at estimating genetic parameters for reproductive traits measured directly in females in order to verify whether they could be used as selection criteria for genetic improvement in Nellore cows, as well as estimating the genetic relationship among these traits and scrotal circumference (SC), the traditional selection criterion for sexual precocity in cattle. In addition to SC, stayability (STAY), number of calvings at 53 months (NC53) and heifers rebreeding (HR) were studied. The (co)variances and genetic parameters were estimated using Bayesian inference. STAY, NC53 and HR were analyzed assuming a threshold model, whereas SC was analyzed with a linear model. Heritability estimated for NC53 was 0.22, and this trait was strongly and positively correlated with STAY, meaning selection for NC53 would improve productive longevity of Nellore cows. Correlations estimated between HR and STAY (≈0.97) and between HR and NC53 (≈0.99) allow an improvement on HR rates if selection was applied to traits related to longevity. Genetic correlations among SC and female reproductive traits were positive but weak, suggesting the need to use reproductive traits directly measured in females in order to obtain greater improvements in sexual precocity and longevity.  相似文献

The genotypes of merozoite surface protein-1, merozoite surface protein-2 and glutamine rich protein are frequently used to distinguish recrudescence from reinfection when parasitaemia reappears after antimalarial drug treatment. However, none of the previous reports has clearly assessed the change of genetic diversity following drug treatment. In the present study, we have assessed the impact of pyrimethamine/sulfadoxine and chlorproguanil/dapsone on the genetic diversity of isolates and the multiplicity of infection in patient isolates from Kilifi, Kenya. We have analysed the length polymorphism of merozoite surface protein-1, merozoite surface protein-2 and glutamine rich protein and the data clearly show that treatment with pyrimethamine/sulfadoxine and chlorproguanil/dapsone did not change the multiplicity of infection found in patients, in contrast to the selection that these drugs exert on the genes encoded by the target enzymes. In addition, we report that children of less than 2 years tend to have fewer numbers of clones per isolate when compared with older children. Overall, this study shows that the selection for genes that confer drug resistance is not a factor in reducing the genetic diversity of parasite clones in a patient.  相似文献

An unresolved question in sexual selection research is whetherdifferent secondary sexual traits are developmentally independentor instead whether their degree of expression is a manifestationof a general resource pool (i.e., condition) within the organism. If degree of expression of different sexual traits reflectsability to accumulate condition, then covariation should existacross genotypes in the expression of these traits, even ifthey are very different in kind. Here we present evidence forpredicted covariation between morphological (sex comb size)and behavioral (courtship song) sexual traits among geneticlines of Drosophila bipectinata Duda extracted from a naturalpopulation. There is evidence that both these traits in Drosophilaare condition dependent and subject to sexual selection. Wedetected significant body size–independent differencesin comb size among 32 lines. Replicate lines exhibiting relativelyhigh and low values of comb size were then subjected to analysesof courtship song. High sex comb lines exhibited shorter meanburst period and shorter mean burst duration than low sex comblines. These song differences occurred only during the distantpursuit phase of male courtship and existed despite factoringout individual variations in sex comb size, the trait on thebasis of which test lines were originally chosen. The resultsverify the prediction of an association between condition-dependentsecondary sexual traits across genotypes and, therefore, supportthe existence of an overall genetic quality related to conditionacquisition.  相似文献

Thermal stress has been shown to result in decreased egg production, decreased eggshell quality, and ultimately millions of dollars in losses to the industry. Therefore, there are many factors to consider when implementing genetic selection programs aimed at improving egg production under tropical conditions. So, trial is trying to improve the productivity and eggshell quality traits of the Fayoumi chicken under high ambient temperatures via selection programs and gene expression. In the present study, day-old Fayoumi chicks were raised either under normal temperature (control) or conditions of thermal stress (the heated group). At 35 weeks, male and female chickens from the control group were mated randomly and females selected for higher egg production and eggshell strength were mated to male siblings to obtain the progeny of the first generation (F1). F1 birds were further selected and mated to obtain the progeny of the second generation. Our results show that egg production and eggshell strength traits improved over successive generations via selection under conditions of heat stress. Furthermore, the reduction in egg production and eggshell strength as a result of heat stress declined from one generation to the next in birds selected for good heat tolerance, and an inverse relationship was observed between the OC-17 and eggshell strength. Additionally, levels of HSP90 and gene expression increased in the two successive generations, indicating that both productivity and heat tolerance were enhanced due to selection in birds raised under conditions of thermal stress. Moreover, generation exerted an important effect on this trait. Thus, desirable traits such as improved heat tolerance in producing lines were observed in Fayoumi chickens exposed to conditions of thermal stress via selection. Therefore, modern advances in studies of poultry breeding and genetics, such as gene expression studies, should be examined.  相似文献

Although we often focus on the causes of geographic variation, understanding processes that act to reduce geographic variation is also important. Here, we consider a process whereby adaptive foraging across the landscape and directional selection exerted by a conifer seed predator, the common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), potentially act to homogenize geographic variation in the defensive traits of its prey. We measured seed predation and phenotypic selection exerted by crossbills on black pine (Pinus nigra) at two sites in the Pindos Mountains, Greece. Seed predation by crossbills was over an order of magnitude higher at the site where cone scale thickness was significantly thinner, which was also the cone trait that was the target of selection at the high predation site. Additional comparisons of selection differentials demonstrate that crossbills exert selection on black pine that is consistent in form across space and time, and increases in strength with increasing seed predation. If predators distribute themselves in relation to the defensive traits of their prey and the strength of selection predators exert is proportional to the amount of predation, then predators may act to homogenize trait variation among populations of their prey in a process analogous to coevolutionary alternation with escalation.  相似文献

Plants exhibit a great variety of types of clonal growth. Moderate variation in clonal traits often exists even within species. The consequences of these variations for species interaction are of great interests to ecologists. In this paper, I address the small-leaved (phalanx) to large-leaved (guerrilla) variation in white clover ( Trifolium repens ), and discuss its consequences for species and genotype coexistence. I also address the clonal and sexual resource allocation variants within the large-leaved type. Small-leaved and large-leaved genotypes differ in various aspects of clonal growth. The large-leaved genotype displays greater phenotypic plasticity but is less physiologically integrated than the small-leaved genotype. We examined the consequences in a grazed sward, where white clover and zoysia grass coexist. In this sward, white clover is patchily distributed. We first tested the hypothesis that the large-leaved genotype is more advantageous in growth than the small-leaved genotype. Results from both common garden and competition experiments supported the hypothesis. Second, we tested the hypothesis that within large-leaved plants, the clonal subtype (which invests more resources to stolons but less in flower heads than the sexual one) is more advantageous than the sexual one because it is more competitive. This hypothesis was rejected. Both subtypes coexisted in the sward. This is probably because the sexual subtype is superior for interpatch migration than the clonal one. Both subtypes differ in advantages they offer for between-patch and within-patch processes, which promotes their coexistence. Finally, field monitoring of the behavior of a large-leaved clone is described. This monitoring was conducted in a moderately grazed sward, where microenvironmental heterogeneity is extremely high in time and space.  相似文献

Flowering time in Arabidopsis is controlled by a large number of genes, identified by induced mutations. Forty-two double mutants involving 10 of these loci were obtained and analyzed for their flowering behavior under long-day conditions, with and without vernalization, and under short-day conditions. The genetic interactions between the various mutants proved to be complex, although a major epistatic group (called group A) could be identified corresponding to the mutants, which are relatively insensitive to vernalization and daylength. In contrast, the genetic behavior of the mutants much more responsive to these environmental factors (group B) is more complex. The vernalization responsiveness of the group B mutants did not compensate for the lateness of the group A mutants. This indicated that these genes do not control vernalization sensitivity as such, but provide a factor that becomes limiting in short days. The classification of these mutants in different physiological groups is discussed in relation to the detected genetic interactions, and based on these interactions a more detailed model of their role in flowering initiation is proposed.  相似文献

A Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the potential of Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) in a multiple-trait situation. Only additive effects were considered. The base population was assumed to be in linkage equilibrium and, next, the population was managed over 15 discrete generations, 10 males and 50 females were chosen out of the 100 candidates of each sex. Performance for two traits was simulated with an overall heritability of a given trait equal to 0.25 or 0.10 and the overall genetic correlation between traits was generally equal to -0.4 except in one case where it was equal to 0. The model involved one biallelic QTL, accounting for 10 or 20% of the genetic variance of a given trait, plus polygenes. Initial allelic frequencies at the QTL were generally equal to 0.5 but in one case were equal to 0.1 and 0.9. A marker with 120 different alleles in the 60 founder parents was simulated in the vicinity of the QTL. Two values of the recombination rate between these two loci were considered, 0.10 and 0.02. The genetic evaluation was based on a multiple-trait BLUP animal model, accounting (MAS) or not (conventional BLUP) for marker information. Two sets of simulations were run: (1) a "missing data"case, with males having no record for one of the traits, and (2) a "secondary trait"case, with one trait having a weight in the aggregate genotype 4 times less than the other trait and the QTL acting only on this secondary trait. In the first set, evaluation methods were found to mainly affect the accuracy of overall genetic values prediction for the trait with missing data. In comparison with BLUP, MAS led to an extra overall genetic response for the trait with missing data, which was strongly penalised under the conventional BLUP, and to a deficit in response for the other trait. This more balanced evolution of the two traits was obtained, however, at the expense of the long-term overall cumulated response for the aggregate genotype, which was 1 to 2.5% lower than the one obtained under the conventional BLUP. In the second set of simulation, in the case of low initial frequency (0.1) of the QTL allele favourable to the secondary trait, MAS was found to be substantially more efficient to avoid losing this allele than BLUP only when the QTL had a large effect and the marker was close. More benefits should be expected from MAS with more specific applications, such as early selection of animals, or by applying dynamic procedures i.e. letting the respective weights to QTL and polygenic values in the selection criterion vary across generation.  相似文献

RAPD markers and agronomic traits were used to determine the genetic relationships among 32 breeding lines of melon belonging to seven varietal types. Most of the breeding lines were Galia and Piel de Sapo genotypes, which are currently being used in breeding programmes to develop new hybrid combinations. A total of 115 polymorphic reliable bands from 43 primers and 24 agronomic traits were scored for genetic distance calculations and cluster analysis. A high concordance between RAPDs and agronomic traits was observed when genetic relationships among lines were assessed. In addition, RAPD data were highly correlated with the pedigree information already known for the lines and revealed the existence of two clusters for each varietal type that comprised the lines sharing similar agronomic features. These groupings were consistent with the development of breeding programmes trying to generate two separate sets of parental lines for hybrid production. Nevertheless, the performance of certain hybrids indicated that RAPDs were more suitable markers than agronomic traits in predicting genetic distance among the breeding lines analysed. The employment of RAPDs as molecular markers both in germplasm management and improvement, as well as in the selection of parental lines for the development of new hybrid combinations, is discussed. Background

Social interactions often occur among living organisms, including aquatic animals. There is empirical evidence showing that social interactions may genetically affect phenotypes of individuals and their group mates. In this context, the heritable effect of an individual on the phenotype of another individual is known as an Indirect Genetic Effect (IGE). Selection for socially affected traits may increase response to artificial selection, but also affect rate of inbreeding.

Methods

A simulation study was conducted to examine the effect of Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) selection for socially affected traits on the rate of inbreeding. A base scenario without IGE and three alternative scenarios with different magnitudes of IGE were simulated. In each generation, 25 sires and 50 dams were mated, producing eight progeny per dam. The population was selected for 20 generations using BLUP. Individuals were randomly assigned to groups of eight members in each generation, with two families per group, each contributing four individuals. “Heritabilities” (for both direct and indirect genetic effects) were equal to 0.1, 0.3 or 0.5, and direct–indirect genetic correlations were −0.8, −0.4, 0, 0.4, or 0.8. The rate of inbreeding was calculated from generation 10 to 20.

Results

For the base scenario, the rates of inbreeding were 4.09, 2.80 and 1.95% for “heritabilities” of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5, respectively. Overall, rates of inbreeding for the three scenarios with IGE ranged from 2.21 to 5.76% and were greater than for the base scenarios. The results show that social interaction within groups of two families increases the resemblance between estimated breeding values of relatives, which, in turn, increases the rate of inbreeding.

Conclusion

BLUP selection for socially affected traits increased the rate of inbreeding. To maintain inbreeding at an acceptable rate, a selection algorithm that restricts the increase in mean kinship, such as optimum contribution selection, is required.  相似文献

Colonies of Trioxys pallidus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) were collected from California walnut orchards during 1985–86 and screened for variability of responses to azinphosmethyl. Variability was found and laboratory selection was initiated with four colonies. All colonies responded to selection; after seven to 12 selections, three colonies were combined (Select colony) and selection was conducted an additional 27 times. The corresponding base colonies were also combined and maintained for comparisons (Base). Concentration/mortality lines obtained for the Select and Base colonies after five and 27 selections indicated seven‐ and 9.2‐fold differences in LC50 values respectively. Survival of the resistant strain varied with bioassay method and decreased in the order: clip cages on treated foliage > treated plastic cups with untreated mesh tops > treated plastic cups with treated mesh tops> treated cups with treated solid lids. The initial bioassay results with treated plastic cups suggested that the selection response was inadequate to allow the resistant strain to survive field rats of azinphosmethyl. When the resistant strain's survival was evaluated with bioassay methods more closely mimicking field conditions (clip cages on field‐treated foliage), we concluded the selected strain could survive field rates of azinphosmethyl.  相似文献
