Abstract Predation rates of flagellate and ciliate protozoa on the bacterioplankton of Butrón River (Spain) were determined from FLB (fluorescently labelled bacteria) uptake rates. Bacterial and ciliate protozoa counts were higher when higher water temperature was recorded. Flagellate counts did not show this pattern, which suggested predation of flagellates by other organisms, or some other different nutritional mode besides phagotrophy. Average individual ciliate predation rates were up to 40-times higher than those of flagellates. These results were compared with similar data obtained from other authors in several aquatic systems. However, the population predation rates of flagellate protozoa were on average 6-times higher than that of ciliate protozoa, due to the low population numbers of the latter. Thus, flagellate protozoa can be considered as more important bacterial consumers than ciliates in this aquatic system.  相似文献

Participation of nitrilotriacetic acid degrading bacterial strain NTA-1 in the continuous-cultivated mixed culture was studied under different conditions including predation pressure of the ciliate Dexiostoma campyla (STOKES , 1886). From the viewpoint of dispersed/flocculated biomass distribution, significant relationships between NTA-1 and total bacteria ratio, and dispersed and total biomass ratio were proved in the systems without high concentrations of ciliates. The ciliate concentrations reaching 104 ml−1 stabilized flocculated biomass growth without directly affecting NTA-1 portion. Using fluorescently labelled NTA-1 bacteria, filter feeding rates of ciliates were evaluated (maximum individual uptake rate upon NTA-1 bacteria as a number of bacteria per ciliate per hour being 120 h−1 and 260 h−1 under ciliate division rate of 0.3 day−1 and 1 day−1, respectively). Biomass balance showed that dispersed NTA-1 bacteria should not serve as the sole feeding source for these free-swimming ciliates. The role of diversity of mixed bacterial diet in ciliate growth and the role of ciliate predation in stabilizing bacterial assemblage structure was proved.  相似文献

Substrate supply and protist grazing are two of the most important forces that determine the composition and properties of bacterial assemblages. General ecological theory predicts that the relative importance of these factors is changing with the environmental productivity. In the present study, the interplay between bottom-up and top-down control was studied in a productivity gradient simulated in one-stage chemostats containing natural assemblages of freshwater bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates. Bacterial assemblages in the chemostats differed strongly with respect to their morphological, physiological and compositional properties in the presence versus the absence of predators. However, theses differences were modified by the productivity gradient. Whereas in predator-free chemostats the mean abundance and biomass of bacteria increased proportionally with increasing substrate supply, in treatments that included flagellates bacterial production was largely channelled into predator biomass. The bacterial morphological diversity increased along the productivity gradient with increasing substrate input but even more so with predators. Proportional to the increasing substrate supply, predation shifted the remaining bacteria towards morphologically inedible forms. Predation also caused shifts in bacterial substrate-utilization profiles, and in bacterial community composition, as analysed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism of PCR-amplified 16S-rRNA genes. Without predators, bacterial richness increased along the productivity gradient whereas with predators bacterial richness was higher at intermediate substrate levels. In accordance with ecological theory, these results demonstrated that predators influence all of the major characteristics of bacterial assemblages but the magnitude of this effect is modulated by the productivity of the system.  相似文献

Trophic interactions between bacteria, viruses, and protozoan predators play crucial roles in structuring aquatic microbial communities and regulating microbe-mediated ecosystem functions (biogeochemical processes). In this microbial food web, protozoan predators and viruses share bacteria as a common resource, and protozoan predators can kill viruses [intraguild predation (IGP)] and vice versa, even though these latter processes are probably of less importance. However, protozoan predators (IG predator) and viruses (IG prey) generally occur together in various environments, and this cannot be fully explained by the classic IGP models. In addition, controlled experiments have often demonstrated that protozoan predators have apparently positive effects on viral activity. These surprising patterns can be explained by indirect interactions between them via induced trait changes in bacterial assemblages, which can be compared with trait-mediated indirect interactions (TMIIs) in terrestrial plant–insect systems. Here, we review some trait changes in bacterial assemblages that may positively affect the activities and abundance of viruses. It has been suggested that in bacterial assemblages, protozoan predation may enhance growth conditions for individual bacteria and induce both phenotypic trait changes at the individual (e.g., filament-forming bacteria) and group level as a result of changes in bacterial community composition (e.g., species dominance). We discuss the specificities of aquatic microbial systems and attempt find functional similarities between aquatic microbial systems and terrestrial plant–insect systems with regard to TMII function.  相似文献

The planktonic ciliate populations of 30 Florida lakes constituting a broad trophic gradient were examined to determine the response of protozoan community structure to increasing eutrophication. Both ciliate abundance and biomass were strongly related to lake trophic state. Comparison of the Florida data base with a comparable north temperate lake group indicated that subtropical lakes generally possess higher ciliate abundance and biomass at a given trophic state than temperate lakes. However the equations derived for each data base were not significantly different. Community diversity and species richness increased with increasing lake productivity. Highly acidic lakes displayed significantly reduced diversity and numbers of species when contrasted with nonacidic oligotrophic lakes. Small-bodied (< 30 um) ciliates dominated all lakes but were proportionally less important in oligotrophic lakes. Presence-absence data produced three assemblages: an ubiquitous association of primarily small ciliate taxa, a group of large ciliates mainly restricted to eutrophic-hypereutrophic lakes, and a very large ciliate,Stentor niger, which dominated the protozoan communities of acidic oligotrophic lakes.  相似文献

Predation and competition are two main factors that determine the size and composition of aquatic bacterial populations. Using a simplified bacterial community, composed of three strains characterized by different responses to predation, a short-term laboratory experiment was performed to evaluate adaptations and relative success in communities with experimentally controlled levels of predation and nutrient availability. A strain with a short generation time (Pseudomonas putida), one with high plasticity in cell morphology (Flectobacillus sp. GC5), and one that develops microcolonies (Pseudomonas sp. CM10), were selected. The voracious flagellate Ochromonas sp. was chosen as a predator. To describe adaptations against grazing and starvation, abundance, biomass and relative heterogeneity of bacteria were measured. On the whole, the strains in the predation-free cultures exhibited unicellular growth, and P. putida represented the largest group. The presence of Ochromonas strongly reduced bacterial abundance, but not always the total biomass. The activity of grazers changed the morphological composition of the bacterial communities. Under grazing pressure the relative composition of the community depended on the substrate availability. In the presence of predators, P. putida abundance declined in both high and low nutrient treatments, and Pseudomonas CM10 developed colonies. Flectobacillus was only numerically codominant in the nutrient-rich environments.  相似文献

The development of ciliated protozoan biomass in the hypolimnion of Piburger See, a small subalpine lake, was demonstrated to depend mainly on two factors. Firstly, the availability of oxygen or nitrate as electron acceptors determines the depth profiles of ciliates. Large quantities of ciliates and even maximum numbers were found at depths where no oxygen could be detected. If nitrate also disappeared during the summer stagnation period, the biomass of protozoa was strongly reduced. Nitrite peaks generally corresponded with ciliate peaks. An extension of Finlay's findings (dissimilatory nitrate reductase within the inner mitochondrial membrane) to other ciliate groups is hypothesized.Secondly, the biomass development of hypolimnetic ciliates was strongly correlated with the bacterial biomass registered approx. 2 weeks before (r2 = 0.891, n = 14). The biomass of bacteria, on the other hand, was dependent upon the sedimentation rate of organic carbon (r2 = 0.850, n = 15), if a time lag of approx. 2 weeks was taken into account. Therefore a total time lag of approx. 4 weeks was assumed to take place between sedimentation of organic substance and the corresponding increase in ciliate biomass (r2 = 0.853, n = 14). Bacteria were shown to be an important intermediate link in the food chain of the hypolimnion. They appear to represent the principal energy source for pelagic ciliates. Sedimentation of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus is the driving force for the establishment of the hypolimnetic microbial community.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on length of time for digestion of bacteria was evaluated, by using fluorescently labeled bacteria (FLB), for phagotrophic flagellates and ciliates isolated from coastal northwest Mediterranean waters. Accumulation of FLB in protozoan food vacuoles was followed until a plateau of FLB per cell occurred; then after a 1:10 dilution of FLB with unlabeled bacteria, disappearance of FLB in food vacuoles was monitored. For both 3- to 5-μm flagellates and 10- to 40-μm ciliates, the absolute linear slopes of FLB uptake and disappearance were nearly identical in individual experiments over a temperature range of 12 to 22°C. We inferred from these results that the leveling off of the uptake curves resulted when equilibrium between ingestion and digestion of bacteria was attained. The time to leveling off then represented the average time needed for complete digestion of the bacteria ingested at the start of the experiment, and the inverse of this time represented a bacterial digestion rate. The digestion rate increased exponentially from 12 to 22°C for both a mixed flagellate assemblage and the oligotrichous ciliate Strombidium sulcatum, with a Q10 of 2.8 for the flagellates and 2.0 for the ciliate. Although bacterial ingestion rates varied greatly, depending on protozoan cell size, total bacterial abundance, and temperature, digestion times appeared to be significantly influenced only by protozoan cell size (or type of protozoan) and by temperature.  相似文献

To examine the extent of the microbial food web in suboxic waters of a shallow subtropical coastal lagoon, the density and biomass of bacteria and protozooplankton were quantified under different dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. In addition, bottom waters of a stratified site were compared with bottom waters of a homogeneous site under periods of high and low biological oxygen production/consumption in the lagoon. At the stratified site, microbial biomass decreased with oxygen decline, from oxia to suboxia, with a recovery of the initial total biomass after a 20-day period of persistent suboxia. A peak in density and biomass of purple sulfur bacteria (PSB) (90 μg C L(-1)) occurred in the suboxic waters 20 days prior to the peak in biomass of ciliates >50 μm (Loxophyllum sp. of 150 μm) (160 μg C L(-1)), demonstrating a top down biomass control. Ciliates >50 μm were positively correlated with PSB and bacteriochlorophyll a (photosynthetic pigment of PSB). Total protozoan biomass reached 430 μg C L(-1) in the suboxic waters of the stratified site, with ciliates >50 μm accounting for 90% of the total ciliate biomass and of 55 % of biomass of protozoa. At the homogeneous site, total protozoan biomass was only 66 μg C L(-1), where flagellates and ciliates <25 μm were the dominant microorganisms. Therefore, as light is available for primary producers in the bottom waters of shallow stratified coastal lagoons or estuaries, one can expect that high primary production of PSB may favor a specialized microbial food web composed by larger microorganisms, accessible to zooplankton that tolerate low DO levels.  相似文献

Surviving predation is a fitness trait of Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EcO157) that provides ample time for the pathogen to be transported from reservoirs (e.g. dairies and feedlots) to farm produce grown in proximity. Ionophore dietary supplements that inhibit rumen protozoa may provide such a selective advantage for EcO157 to proliferate in lagoons as the pathogen is released along with the undigested supplement as manure washings. This study evaluated the fate of an outbreak strain of EcO157, protozoan and bacterial communities in wastewater treated with monensin. Although total protozoa and native bacteria were unaffected by monensin, the time for 90% decrease in EcO157 increased from 0.8 to 5.1 days. 18S and 16S rRNA gene sequencing of wastewater samples revealed that monensin eliminated almost all colpodean and oligohymenophorean ciliates, probably facilitating the extended survival of EcO157. Total protozoan numbers remained high in treated wastewater as monensin enriched 94% of protozoan sequences undetected with untreated wastewater. Monensin stimulated 30-fold increases in Cyrtohymena citrina, a spirotrichean ciliate, and also biflagellate bicosoecids and cercozoans. Sequences of gram-negative Proteobacteria increased from 1% to 46% with monensin, but gram-positive Firmicutes decreased from 93% to 46%. It is noteworthy that EcO157 numbers increased significantly (P<0.01) in Sonneborn medium containing monensin, probably due to monensin-inhibited growth of Vorticella microstoma (P<0.05), a ciliate isolated from wastewater. We conclude that dietary monensin inhibits ciliate protozoa that feed on EcO157. Feed supplements or other methods that enrich these protozoa in cattle manure could be a novel strategy to control the environmental dissemination of EcO157 from dairies to produce production environments.  相似文献

In a two-stage continuous-flow system, we studied the impacts of different protozoan feeding modes on the morphology and taxonomic structure of mixed bacterial consortia, which were utilizing organic carbon released by a pure culture of a Rhodomonas sp. grown on inorganic medium in the first stage of the system. Two of three second stages operated in parallel were inoculated by a bacterivorous flagellate, Bodo saltans, and an algivorous ciliate, Urotricha furcata, respectively. The third vessel served as a control. In two experiments, where algal and bacterial populations grew at rates and densities typical for eutrophic waters, we compared community changes of bacteria, algae, and protozoa under quasi-steady-state conditions and during the transient stage after the protozoan inoculation. In situ hybridization with fluorescent oligonucleotide probes and cultivation-based approaches were used to tentatively analyze the bacterial community composition. Initially the cell size distribution and community structure of all cultivation vessels showed similar patterns, with a dominance of 1- to 2.5-(mu)m-long rods from the beta subdivision of the phylum Proteobacteria ((beta)-Proteobacteria). Inoculation with the ciliate increased bacterial growth in this substrate-controlled variant, seemingly via a recycling of nutrients and substrate released by grazing on algae, but without any detectable effect on the composition of bacterial assemblage. In contrast, an inoculation with the bacterivore, B. saltans, resulted in a decreased proportion of the (beta)-Proteobacteria. One part of the assemblage (<4% of total bacterial numbers), moreover, produced large grazing-resistant threadlike cells. As B. saltans ingested only cells of <3 (mu)m, this strategy yielded a refuge for (symbl)70% of total bacterial biomass from being grazed. Another consequence of the heavy predation in this variant was a shift to the numerical dominance of the (alpha)-Proteobacteria. The enhanced physiological status of the heavily grazed-upon segment of bacterial community resulted in a much higher proportion of CFU (mean, 88% of total bacterial counts) than with other variants, where CFU accounted for (symbl)30%. However, significant cultivation-dependent shifts of the bacterial community were observed toward (gamma)-Proteobacteria and members of the Cytophaga/Flavobacterium group, which demonstrated the rather poor agreement between cultivation-based approaches and oligonucleotide probing.  相似文献

Trap fluid of aquatic carnivorous plants of the genus Utricularia hosts specific microbiomes consisting of commensal pro‐ and eukaryotes of largely unknown ecology. We examined the characteristics and dynamics of bacteria and the three dominant eukaryotes, i.e. the algae‐bearing ciliate Tetrahymena utriculariae (Ciliophora), a green flagellate Euglena agilis (Euglenophyta), and the alga Scenedesmus alternans (Chlorophyta), associated with the traps of Utricularia reflexa. Our study focused on ecological traits and life strategies of the highly abundant ciliate whose biomass by far exceeds that of other eukaryotes and bacteria independent of the trap age. The ciliate was the only bacterivore in the traps, driving rapid turnover of bacterial standing stock. However, given the large size of the ciliate and the cell‐specific uptake rates of bacteria we estimated that bacterivory alone would likely be insufficient to support its apparent rapid growth in traps. We suggest that mixotrophy based on algal symbionts contributes significantly to the diet and survival strategy of the ciliate in the extreme (anaerobic, low pH) trap‐fluid environment. We propose a revised concept of major microbial interactions in the trap fluid where ciliate bacterivory plays a central role in regeneration of nutrients bound in rapidly growing bacterial biomass.  相似文献

Hydrolysis of an artificial fluorogenic substrate, 4-methylumbelliferyl-beta-N-acetylglucosaminide, has been studied in a monoculture predator-prey system with either a flagellate (Bodo saltans) or a ciliate (Cyclidium sp.) fed upon pure bacterial culture (Aeromonas hydrophila or Alcaligenes xylosoxidans). Aeromonas hydrophila produced a low-affinity beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase-like enzyme (K(m), >100 mumol liter) but Alcaligenes xylosoxidans did not. Inoculation of both bacterial strains with bacterivorous protozoa induced the occurrence of another, high-affinity, beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase-like enzyme (K(m), <0.5 mumol liter). The latter enzyme showed significant, close correlations with total grazing rates of both B. saltans (r = 0.96) and Cyclidium sp. (r = 0.89) estimated by using uptake of fluorescently labelled bacteria. Further significant correlations between several protozoan parameters and kinetic parameters of this enzyme suggest its likely protozoan origin. If both types of enzyme occurred together, they could be satisfactorily distinguished by using kinetic data analysis. Hence, measurements of beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase-like activities might be promising to use to improve estimations of protozoan bacterivory.  相似文献

Abstract The mean annual biomass of planktonic bacteria showed large variations both within and between lakes. The lowest bacterial biomass was found in acidified lakes (7.8–12.1 μg C · 1−1), and tended to increase with increasing water colour (up to 44.1 μg C · 1−1). The highest recorded bacterial biomass was 138 μg C · 1−1. The mean annual bacterial biomass equalled 23–45% of the algal biomass. Zooplankton biomass was high, compared to algal biomass (40–50%). Multiple regression analysis of 10 variables showed a strong positive correlation between bacterial biomass and humic content ( r = 0.74, P < 0.001), while other parameters, except pH, showed no correlation. The observation thus strongly supports the role of humic compounds in aquatic secondary production.  相似文献

Mesocosms (4.5 m3) situated in a closed bay area were used to investigate the effect of protozoan predation on nonindigenous bacteria. Pseudomonas fluorescens strain Agl was released into mesocosms as a single inoculum of 1 × 105 cells ml–1 (final concentration) or as four inocula (same concentration each) at intervals of 3 days. Mesocosms that had received growth media corresponding to the inoculum served as controls. Numbers of P. fluorescens Ag1 decreased rapidly whether released as single or multiple inocula. Direct estimation of protozoan predation using fluorescently labeled P. fluorescens from log phase and starved cultures, respectively, revealed that natural populations of heterotrophic nanoflagellates consumed substantial amounts of the nonindigenous bacterial strain. The volume of fluorescently labeled cells prepared from starved cells was 68% of log phase cell volume, but the individual clearance of the small cells was five to seven times higher than that of the log phase bacteria. The natural populations of nanoflagellates consumed 34–62% of P. fluorescens Ag1 daily if starved bacteria were offered as food, and 3–13% if the cells were in the logarithmic growth phase. This suggests that the effect of protozoan predation on nonindigenous bacterial strains is substantial because cultured bacteria are likely to starve in natural environments. The addition of P. fluorescens Ag1 and the growth medium enhanced the abundance of natural bacteria, chlorophyll a, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, and ciliates, but it did not improve the growth conditions for the released strain. The effects on the indigenous populations were more pronounced after addition of fresh medium than following inoculation with cells, which possibly was due to the lower nutrient content of spent medium. However, these results, based on direct estimation of protozoan predation on log phase and starved nonindigenous bacteria, point to the conclusion that mortality induced by bacterivorous predators is the key factor determining removal of nonindigenous bacteria introduced in natural aquatic systems. The susceptibility of coliform bacteria and bacterial pathogens to free chlorine residuals was determined before and after incubation with amoebae and ciliate protozoa. Viability of bacteria was quantified to determine their resistance to free chlorine residuals when ingested by laboratory strains of Acanthamoeba castellanii and Tetrahymena pyriformis. Cocultures of bacteria and protozoa were incubated to facilitate ingestion of the bacteria and then were chlorinated, neutralized, and sonicated to release intracellular bacteria. Qualitative susceptibility of protozoan strains to free chlorine was also assessed. Protozoa were shown to survive and grow after exposure to levels of free chlorine residuals that killed free-living bacteria. Ingested coliforms Escherichia coli, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter agglomerans, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Klebsiella oxytoca and bacterial pathogens Salmonella typhimurium, Yersinia enterocolitica, Shigella sonnei, Legionella gormanii, and Campylobacter jejuni had increased resistance to free chlorine residuals. Bacteria could be cultured from within treated protozoans well after the time required for 99% inactivation of free-living cells. All bacterial pathogens were greater than 50-fold more resistant to free chlorine when ingested by T. pyriformis. Escherichia coli ingested by a Cyclidium sp., a ciliate isolated from a drinking water reservoir, were also shown to be more resistant to free chlorine. The mechanism that increased resistance appeared to be survival within protozoan cells. This study indicates that bacteria can survive ingestion by protozoa. This bacterium-protozoan association provides bacteria with increased resistance to free chlorine residuals which can lead to persistence of bacteria in chlorine-treated water. We propose that resistance to digestion by predatory protozoa was an evolutionary precursor of pathogenicity in bacteria and that today it is a mechanism for survival of fastidious bacteria in dilute and inhospitable aquatic environments.  相似文献

Bacterial mortality was studied using two complementary methods between 2002 and 2004 in the two main basins (north and south) of Lake Tanganyika. The disappearance of radioactivity from the DNA of natural assemblages of bacteria previously labeled with tritiated thymidine was used to estimate the mortality due to grazing by predators (72%) and due to the cell lysis (28%). Measurements of ingestion rate of bacteria by protozoa using fluorescent micro-particles yielded protozoan grazing rates similar to those provided by the thymidine method, and showed that heterotrophic nano-flagellates were responsible for most of the grazing pressure on the bacterial community of the pelagic zone (92-99%). Bacterial cell lysis was the second process involved in bacterial mortality, ranking before ciliate grazing. Overall, bacterial mortality was balanced with bacterial production. With regard to the assessment of the trophic role of bacteria, it was estimated that c. 5-8% of the organic carbon taken up by bacteria was converted into protozoan biomass and was thus available for metazoans.  相似文献

Batch cultures of aquatic bacteria and dissolved organic matter were used to examine the impact of carbon source concentration on bacterial growth, biomass, growth efficiency, and community composition. An aged concentrate of dissolved organic matter from a humic lake was diluted with organic compound-free artificial lake water to obtain concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) ranging from 0.04 to 2.53 mM. The bacterial biomass produced in the cultures increased linearly with the DOC concentration, indicating that bacterial biomass production was limited by the supply of carbon. The bacterial growth rate in the exponential growth phase exhibited a hyperbolic response to the DOC concentration, suggesting that the maximum growth rate was constrained by the substrate concentration at low DOC concentrations. Likewise, the bacterial growth efficiency calculated from the production of biomass and CO(2) increased asymptotically from 0.4 to 10.4% with increasing DOC concentration. The compositions of the microbial communities that emerged in the cultures were assessed by separation of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA fragments by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling of the gel profiles showed that there was a gradual change in the community composition along the DOC gradient; members of the beta subclass of the class Proteobacteria and members of the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium group were well represented at all concentrations, whereas members of the alpha subclass of the Proteobacteria were found exclusively at the lowest carbon concentration. The shift in community composition along the DOC gradient was similar to the patterns of growth efficiency and growth rate. The results suggest that the bacterial growth efficiencies, the rates of bacterial growth, and the compositions of bacterial communities are not constrained by substrate concentrations in most natural waters, with the possible exception of the most oligotrophic environments.  相似文献

Summary Protozooplankton were sampled in the iceedge zone of the Weddell Sea during the austral spring of 1983 and the austral autumn of 1986. Protozooplankton biomass was dominated by flagellates and ciliates. Other protozoa and micrometazoa contributed a relatively small fraction to the heterotrophic biomass. During both cruises protozoan biomass, chlorophyll a concentrations, phytoplankton production and bacterial biomass and production were low at ice covered stations. During the spring cruise, protozooplankton, phytoplankton, and bacterioplankton reached high concentrations in a welldeveloped ice edge bloom 100 km north of the receding ice edge. During the autumn cruise, the highest concentrations of biomass were in open water well-separated from the ice edge. Integrated protozoan biomass was <12% of the biomass of phytoplankton during the spring cruise and in the autumn the percentages at some stations were >20%. Bacterial biomass exceeded protozooplankton biomass at ice covered stations but in open water stations during the fall cruise, protozooplankton biomass reached twice that of bacteria in the upper 100m of the water column. The biomass of different protozoan groups was positively correlated with primary production, chlorophyll a concentrations and bacterial production and biomass, suggesting that the protozoan abundances were largely controlled by prey availability and productivity. Population grazing rates calculated from clearance rates in the literature indicated that protozooplankton were capable of consuming significant portions of the daily phyto- and bacterioplankton production.  相似文献

In order to assess the factors that determine the dynamics of bacteria with high nucleic acid content in aquatic systems, we (i) conducted 24-h in situ dialysis experiments, involving different fractions of plankton and unfiltered water and (ii) examined empirical relationships between bacteria and both abiotic factors and protists, in boreal humic freshwaters (reservoir and lakes) in the James Bay region (Québec, Canada). Bacteria were subdivided into two subgroups on the basis of their nucleic acid content assessed by flow cytometry. The abundance of bacteria with the highest nucleic acid content and high light scatter (HNA-hs) was significantly correlated, across sites, to bacterial production, whereas bacteria with lower nucleic acid content (LNA) and total bacteria were not. In addition, HNA-hs growth was higher and more variable than LNA growth, indicating that HNA-hs were the most dynamic bacteria. Heterotrophic nanoflagellate and ciliate biomass represented, on average, 5 and 13% of bacterial biomass, respectively. Both in ambient waters and in experiments, ciliates were significantly and negatively correlated with bacteria, whereas heterotrophic nanoflagellates, likely under the grazing pressure from ciliates and metazooplankton, were not. Among ciliates, Cyclidium glaucoma appeared to play an important role. Its growth was significantly and negatively correlated to that of HNA-hs but not to that of LNA. In ambient waters, the abundance of this species explained 56% of the variations in HNA-hs abundance and only 27% of those for LNA. The abundances of total bacteria and LNA significantly increased with chlorophyll a, whereas those of HNA-hs did not. In addition, during the experiments, the estimated potential losses of HNA-hs significantly increased with the initial abundance of C. glaucoma. These results suggest selective removal of the most dynamic bacteria by C. glaucoma and indicate that ciliates may play an important role in the dynamics of active bacteria in natural waters. These findings suggest the existence, within the aquatic microbial food webs, of keystone species that are very important in regulating the activity structure of bacteria.  相似文献
