Investigation of the genetic system of six species ofPlantago has revealed striking differences in their breeding and meiotic systems.Plantago patagonica is an inbreeder on account of preanthesis cleistogamy, whereasP. lanceolata is an obligate outbreeder, as it is self-incompatible.Plantago drummondii, P. lagopus, P. ovata, andP. major show mixed mating but in varying proportions. In terms of their energy budgets, outbreeding species invest more in floral advertisement and male function, while inbreeders invest more in female function. The contribution of the meiotic system to genetic variability, as revealed through recombination index, is more important in the inbreeding species.  相似文献

Background and Aims The organization of rRNA genes incultivated Plantago ovata Forsk. and several of its wild allieswas analysed to gain insight into the phylogenetic relationshipsof these species in the genus which includes some 200 species. • Methods Specific primers were designed to amplify theinternal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) regions from sevenPlantago species and the resulting fragments were cloned andsequenced. Similarly, using specific primers, the 5S rRNA genesfrom these species were amplified and subsequently cloned. Fluorescencein-situ hybridization (FISH) was used for physical mapping of5S and 45S ribosomal RNA genes. • Results The ITS1 region is 19–29 bp longer thanthe ITS2 in different Plantago species. The 5S rRNA gene-repeatingunit varies in length from 289 to 581 bp. Coding regions arehighly conserved across species, but the non-transcribed spacers(NTS) do not match any database sequences. The clone from thecultivated species P. ovata was used for physical mapping ofthese genes by FISH. Four species have one FISH site while threehave two FISH sites. In P. lanceolata and P. rhodosperma, the5S and 45S (18S-5·8S-25S) sites are coupled. • Conclusions Characterization of 5S and 45S rRNA geneshas indicated a possible origin of P. ovata, the only cultivatedspecies of the genus and also the only species with x = 4, froma species belonging to subgenus Psyllium. Based on the studiesreported here, P. ovata is closest to P. arenaria, althoughon the basis of other data the two species have been placedin different subgenera. FISH mapping can be used as an efficienttool to help determine phylogenetic relationships in the genusPlantago and show the interrelationship between P. lanceolataand P. lagopus.  相似文献

Cinematographic, stereophotographic, and visual observations have revealed that the zygomorphic, nectarless flower of Pedicularis lanceolata Michx. is pollinated in northeastern Ohio by pollen-foraging workers of three Bombus species. Foragers hang inverted from the asymmetrical corolla and remove pollen with their front and middle legs from anthers concealed by the galea. The stigma contacts pollen deposited especially on the median portion of the forager's first abdominal sterilite. Insect exclosures and pollinator collections demonstrated the obligate pollination dependence of the flower on Bombus workers. Of 152 corbicular pollen loads from workers foraging on P. lanceolata, Gentiana andrewsii, Prunella vulgaris and five composite species in the same habitat, 84.2% contained P. lanceolata pollen; 75.8% of the latter contained P. lanceolata pollen exclusively. Possible coadaptive relationships of Pedicularis flowers and pollinators are discussed.  相似文献

Pollen-ovule ratios (P/O) were measured for 79 species of Caryophylloideae (Agrostemma, Dianthus, Saponaria, Silene, and Vaccaria). We analyzed if these features are best correlated with (1) the breeding system (outcrossing or selfing), (2) diurnal or nocturnal pollination, (3) life form (annual versus perennial), (4) style number, (5) the sexual system (hermaphroditism, gynodioecism, dioecism), or (6) the taxonomy of species. According to the classification of Cruden [(1977) Evolution 31:32-46] most species in the subfamily Caryophylloideae are facultative autogamous or facultative xenogamous. Autogamous or cleistogamous species showed significantly lower P/Os than outcrossing species. We found no differences between night- and day-flowering species; thus from our data diurnal and nocturnal flower visitors may be considered as equally efficient in transferring pollen. However, other factors are also important for the interpretation of P/Os. Pollen grain numbers and ovule numbers were found to correlate with style number, life form, and breeding system. The low P/Os of some dioecious, and therefore obligate outcrossing, species are discussed in relation to morphological traits that improve pollen deposition by pollinators on the stigma, and in relation to different flower numbers of male and female plants.  相似文献

P.patagonica, P.drummondii and P.ovata, ensure self-pollination either through bud pollination or by synchronizing anther dehiscence with stigma receptivity. Pollen histochemistry and pollen : ovule ratios in Zingiberaceae   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pollen grains of 37 species from 11 genera in the family Zingiberaceae were examined to assess qualitatively starch or lipid contents; the pollen grain and ovule numbers per flower and pollen : ovule ratios were also counted and calculated. Pollen : ovule ratios were studied to reveal patterns of variation in the Zingiberaceae. METHODS: Freshly open flowers with dehiscing anthers were collected at random from plants growing in natural habitats or in botanical gardens. Presence of lipids or starch in pollen grains was tested by Sudan solution and IKI solution, respectively, and examined under a microscope. To estimate the pollen and ovule numbers per flower, one anther from each bud was carefully dissected and all pollen grains were counted; ovaries were carefully dissected out of each flower and counted. Whenever possible, at least 10-15 buds were used in the determination. KEY RESULTS: Thirty-three of all the 37 species examined had starchy pollen. Starch was not found in only four species and lipid was not found in only one species; among the four tribes in subfamily Zingiberoideae, all species of Zingibereae and Globbeae had pollen with no starch, Alpineae and Hedychieae had pollen with and without starch, whereas, all species of subfamily Costoideae had starchy pollen with abundant lipids. The mean pollen : ovule ratios in the members of the Zingiberaceae investigated range from 3.25 +/- 1.56 to 616.52 +/- 117.83. CONCLUSIONS: The pollen nutrition types seemed not related to mating systems. The pollen : ovule ratios in members of the Zingiberaceae with the same breeding system are noticeably lower than those recorded by previous authors. The lower pollen : ovule ratios in this family are presumed to be related to the highly efficient pollination systems, mediated by pollen which can be quite glutinous and the relatively large stigma area. In most of the Alpinia species the anaflexistylous flowers have much larger numbers of pollen grains and higher pollen : ovule ratios than the cataflexistylous flowers. There are significant differences in mean pollen grain numbers and pollen : ovule ratios between different life forms but ovule numbers are approximately the same.  相似文献

This study concerns 39 different grass species occurring in the wetland regions of Godavari delta in the west Godavari district (16°15′–17°30′N and 80°50′–81°55′E) of Andhra Pradesh, southern India. In each species, the sexual status of lemmas, the period of stigma receptivity, pollen/ovule ratio, pollen longevity and daily pollen release were examined. The functional sexual systems were determined after performing controlled pollinations and testing seed quality by weight and germination potential. The florets of 35 species are morphologically hermaphroditic. Among the other four species, Chionachne koenigii and Iseilema laxum are monoecious; Chrysopogon aciculatus and Pennisetum pedicellatum are andromonoecious. Examination of the sequential opening of florets and controlled pollinations revealed that C. koenigii and I. laxum are obligate outcrossers with incompatibility to geitonogamous pollen; C. aciculatus and P.pedicellatum have a high level of compatibility to xenopollen. These and another nine species were treated as predominantly outcrossing species. Yet another five species were predominantly self‐fertilized, while the remaining 21 species displayed a mixed breeding system. In a majority of the species the P/O ratios are not high and thus do not conform to the expected large P/O ratios in wind‐pollinated plants and postulated breeding systems except in a few species. The majority of these grasses shed pollen over a short period spreading from 2 am to 8 am, when usually low turbulent conditions exist, thus allowing short distance transport and restricted pollen shadows with higher concentration of pollen near the source. This appears to be the appropriate strategy for maximization of pollination in view of the short lifespan of pollen that extends mostly over 1–3 h period, and the patchy distribution of the grasses under study. The restricted pollen shadows facilitate the low levels of pollen production in the grass species under study to fertilize most or all the available ovules.  相似文献

Heteromorphic characters and structural features of the pollen tube pathway are described in tristylous Pontederia sagittata to assess their influence on the pollination process and in mediating self-incompatibility behavior. Heteromorphic characters that distinguish the floral morphs include style length, stigma depth, stigmatic papillae length, stylar parenchyma cell length, area of the stylar canal, stamen height, anther size, and pollen size. Unlike several distylous species that have been investigated, the exine of pollen in P. sagittata was not strongly differentiated among the pollen types, and no differences in stigma cytochemistry were apparent. Features common to the floral morphs were a wet stigma, a hollow trilobed stylar canal separating into two sterile and one fertile canal, and a single anatropous ovule with a highly elaborated integumentary obturator. The similarity in structural features of the pollen tube pathway of P. sagittata to those found in monocotyledonous taxa with gametophytic self-incompatibility suggests that phylogenetic constraints may have influenced the evolution of trimorphic incompatibility in the Pontederiaceae.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to discover if the respiratory metabolismof the roots of Plantago lanceolata L. differed from that ofthe roots of Plantago major L. Measurements of oxygen uptakeand dry weight of excised root systems during growth of seedlingsprovided evidence that the two species differed in the amountof respiration needed to support a given increase in dry weight.Excised root systems were given a 6-h pulse in [U-14C]sucrosefollowed by a 16.5-h chase in sucrose. The detailed distributionof 14C amongst the major components of the roots at the endof the pulse and the chase revealed no significant differencebetween the two species. Patterns of 14CO2 production from [1-14C],[2-14C], [3,4-14C], and [6-14C]glucose of excised root systemsfrom plants of three ages were similar for the two species.It is suggested that there is no conclusive evidence for anysignificant inherent difference in the respiratory metabolismof the roots of the two species. 二型花柱植物通常具有自交不亲和性,在不同植物中所表现的可育性不同。欧报春(Primula vulgaris)是典型的二型花柱植物,为了探究欧报春的繁育特性,通过温室栽培,对欧报春的长花柱和短花柱的花部特征、花粉和花柱形态、花粉活力、柱头可授性、花粉/胚珠比、杂交指数、杂交亲和性、花粉管观察进行研究。结果表明,(1)长花柱和短花柱的花冠直径、花冠筒长度、柱头高度、花药高度和花筒中部直径均表现出两型性;(2)花粉和柱头观察发现花粉极轴长、花粉赤道轴长、花柱直径、柱头乳突细胞和花粉数量均有差异;(3)长花柱的花粉/胚珠比为384.20,短花柱为369.70,属于兼性异交类型;长花柱和短花柱的花粉活力和柱头可授性能在较长时间内维持较高活力;(4)长花柱杂交指数值为5,短花柱为4,表明繁育系统类型为异交,部分自交亲和,需要传粉者;6种授粉组合均能结实,异型花间授粉的结实数明显高于同型自花授粉和异株同型授粉;短花柱为母本的异型花间授粉组合亲和性优于其他组合;欧报春存在自交不亲和性,长花柱的自交不亲和性低于短花柱。  相似文献

In this study, we investigated how neighbors (i.e., competitors) altered resistance phenotypes, namely plant size and levels of secondary compounds (iridoid glycosides), of individual plants and specifically tested whether neighbor identity mattered. We conducted a greenhouse experiment with Plantago lanceolata and Plantago major (Plantaginaceae) in which each species served as focal plants as well as neighbors in a factorial design. In addition, we harvested plants six and nine weeks after transplantation to test whether effects changed as plants grew. In both species, competition reduced plant size, and this effect increased over time. Plantago lanceolata neighbors suppressed growth of both focal plant species more than P. major neighbors. Effects of competition on levels of secondary compounds were more complex. Concentrations of iridoid glycosides were increased by competition in both species at harvest one. By the second harvest, an effect of competition on iridoid glycosides was found only in P. major. Neighbor identity influenced levels of iridoid glycosides in P. lanceolata at harvest one; concentrations were higher in plants grown with P. lanceolata neighbors than in plants grown with P. major neighbors. We also tested whether there was a trade-off between growth (biomass) and defense (levels of iridoid glycosides). Biomass and iridoid glycoside content were significantly correlated only in plants grown with competition and harvested at nine weeks, and this relationship was positive in both species, indicating that there was no trade-off between growth and defense. This study suggests that neighbor identity could play an important role in interspecific interactions, including the interactions of plants with other trophic levels.  相似文献

Mercurialis annua L. is a dioecious anemophilous species thatflowers all year round in central and southern Italy. The flowersof both sexes are dimorphic: the female flower has a vestigialcalyx; the male flower consists only of a calyx that opens atanthesis. The anthers always dehisce after anthesis. The anthesisof male flowers seems to be temperature dependent, whereas antherdehiscence is related to relative humidity. The pollen grainsvary in volume according to the season: they are smaller whenrelative humidity is low and vice versa. They always decreasein volume after anther dehiscence and have the capacity to varyin volume and reach equilibrium with a changing environment.Viability is high, but may drop suddenly during heavy rain orhail that damage the exposed male flowers. The number of pollengrains per stigma varies from 0 to 300. 甘新念珠芥(Neotorularia korolkovii)和宽翅菘蓝(Isatis violascens)是两种广泛分布于新疆准噶尔荒漠的十字花科早春短命植物。对其物候与性表达特征研究结果表明:(1) 二者种子均在3月下旬萌发,5月下旬和6月上旬果实完全成熟,生活周期分别为62d和71d,其中营养生长期约占1/3、生殖生长期约占2/3。(2) 花均为两性,四强雄蕊,单花开放时间较短,长雄蕊的花药开裂早于短雄蕊,但短雄蕊花药中的花粉数较长雄蕊的多。(3) 长、短雄蕊花药中花粉可育率均达90%以上,花粉活力的变化曲线基本相同,柱头可授期分别为9.0h和4.5h,花粉寿命及柱头可授期均短于单花花期,花粉活力最高的时期正是其柱头的最佳授粉期。柱头可授期与花粉活力及寿命在时间上的高度吻合,增加了在不可预测环境中授粉的机会与效率,从而保障生殖成功。(4) 二者的P/O(花粉/胚珠)值分别为108.07±17.17、992.10±272.16,属于自交繁育系统;对其传粉过程、套袋实验及荧光显微观察的结果也证明它们主要以自花传粉的方式来进行交配。(5) 两种植物从物候、花部性表达以及交配式样上均存在与其严酷荒漠环境相适应的特点,是长期适应准噶尔荒漠特殊生态环境的结果,对于保证繁殖成功并扩大种群具有重要的意义。  相似文献

Germination of Planlago lanceolata seeds buried in a chalk grasslandwas higher in bare soil than in vegetated soil, and measurementof soil nitrate concentrations showed that they were high enoughto account for this stimulation. When seeds of P. lanceolatawere sown in pots of soil with or without plants, and wateredwith nutrient solution containing either no nitrate, or 14 mMnitrate (sufficiently high that not all nitrate was absorbedby the plants), the presence of plants inhibited germinationonly when the nutrient solution contained no nitrate.  Little is known about the breeding systems of tropical perennial ginger species. In this paper, we provide information about the breeding system of Alpinia kwangsiensis in Yunnan, Southwest China, specifically self-compatibility, mechanisms promoting outcrossing, and the visitation characteristics of pollinators. Populations of A. kwangsiensis have two specific phenotypes that differ in flowering behaviour: 1) “cataflexistyle” individuals in which the stigma is held erect above the dehiscent anther when anthesis begins in the morning and becomes decurved under the anther at noon and 2) “anaflexistyle” individuals in which the receptive stigma is decurved under the indehiscent anther first and moves into a reflexed superior position above the anther as it begins to shed pollen at mid-day. The stigmatic movements in the two floral phenotypes, which occur in a ratio of 1:1 in natural populations, are synchronous and correlate with the foraging behaviour of floral visitors; pollination is effected only between floral forms. Field experiments indicate that A. kwangsiensis is self-compatible and dependent upon insects for fertilization. This newly reported floral mechanism, which we have named “flexistyly,” adds to the repertoire of devices that have evolved in flowering plants to insure outcrossing. Dichogamy in Salicornieae species is not clearly described in literature, and its efficiency remains untested. In this work we aim to establish the pathway for flower development, the degree of interaction between the two sexes, and the efficiency in overcoming selfing. Flower development was studied in six populations of four Salicornieae species at the Odiel Marsh Natural Park (Huelva, SW Spain) by calculating the percentage of different floral phases established in accordance with the position of their stamens and stigmas. To study the sexual functionality of each phase, the lengths of the perianth, stigma, and ovule were measured, and the number of germinated pollen grains on the stigmas was counted. In the Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and Salicornia ramosissima populations, the stigma protrudes from the perianth when the anthers have shed their pollen. In the Sarcocornia fruticosa and Sarcocornia perennis populations, anthesis starts with the extrusion of one anther, but in the most common pattern the stigma protrudes from the perianth while the anthers are shedding their pollen. All species studied were morphologically protandrous, but only in one population of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum was the number of germinated pollen grains on the stigma significantly greater when the stigma was exserted than in the previous phases.  相似文献

Summary The production of nitrate in an old established dune grassland soil and its uptake by plants was studied by comparing amounts of mineral nitrogen and numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere on the one hand, and on the other accumulated nitrate and levels of nitrate reductase (NaR) of individual plants of three Plantago species,i. e., P. major, P. lanceolata andP. coronopus. For these three Plantago species andP. media basal levels of NaR in the absence of nitrate were determined in plants grown in culture solutions. The basal NaR levels ofP. major andP. media (species occurring on nutrient-rich soils) were significantly higher than those ofP. lanceolata andP. coronopus (species found on nutrient-poor soils). NaR activity increased in the presence of nitrate and was suppressed by ammonium.From the numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere and NaR activity in the leaves it was concluded that nitrate was produced in the root environments of the three Plantago species and that the compound was taken up by the plants. NaR activities and numbers of nitrifying bacteria were higher for individuals ofP. major than for those ofP. lanceolata andP. coronopus. No correlation was found between the ammonium levels and the numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the soil, and no indications of inhibition of nitrifying bacteria in the rhizosphere were obtained. For individuals ofP. lanceolata a correlation was found between the numbers of nitrifying bacteria in the soil and NaR activity in the leaves. Downy mildew (Peronospora plantaginis) caused two different types of infection in the floral parts of isabgol (Plantago ovata). Systemic infection resulted in long spikes bearing weak and sterile florets, which later turned black due to saprophytic growth. Localised infection produced various symptoms ranging between normal flower opening and failure to bloom. Different parts of infected flowers such as sepal, petal, filament and anther were reduced in size compared to healthy flowers. However, gynoecium was elongated in localised infection. P. plantaginis induced gradual sterility of isabgol flowers. Androecium was affected more than the gynoecium was. Pollen number, pollen viability and germination reduced drastically due to localised infection. On the contrary, there were no significant differences between healthy and locally infected flowers in terms of stigma receptivity. In systemically infected spikes, bud development was arrested leading to sterility. When localised disease severity was high, secondary systemic infection caused similar symptoms. Microscopic observations showed presence of the pathogen in different parts of the flowers. Downy mildew adversely affected seed yield and quality; producing seeds, which were smaller and lighter than the healthy ones and later, became black. Seed yield was reduced by as much as 73.45 percent. Husk content per unit seed mass increased relatively as the total surface area of infected seeds increased.  相似文献

The relationship between germinability and fluorochromasia (FCR)has been studied in pollen of eight genera, Secale, Iris, Carex,Eleocharis, Cytisus, Digitalis, Plantago and Lonicera. The FCRtests two properties of the pollen, (a) the integrity of theplasmalemma of the vegetative cell and (b) the presence of anesterase capable of cleaving the fluorogenic ester, fluoresceindiacetate. In general, the correlations between FCR and germinabilitywere found to be very highly significant. This is interpretedas meaning that the primary determinant of pollen viabilityin short-term storage is the state of the vegetative cell membranes.It is suggested that in the partly dehydrated grain at the timeof dispersal the membranes are largely dissociated and do notform an osmotic barrier, but that normal properties are recoveredduring controlled hydration which would normally take placeon the stigma. According to this view, the decay of apparentviability is related to the progressive loss of the capacityof the vegetative cell membranes to regain a normal structureon rehydration. The genera investigated varied in their longevityin storage in low and high humidity conditions. After low-humiditystorage, most showed some enhancement of germination with 1h exposure to a humid atmosphere before transfer to the germinationmedium.
