We studied the effect of seed size on dispersal by comparing dispersal distances in five rodent-dispersed fagaceous species (Lithocarpus harlandii, Quercus variabilis, Q. serrata, Cyclobalanopsis glauca, Castanopsis fargesii) with different seed size. We tracked individual seeds with coded tin-tags in two stands over 3 years in a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest in the Dujiangyan Region of Sichuan Province, Southwest China. Our seed tracking data indicate that dispersal distances (including mean, maximum and distribution range) of seeds in primary caches and of seeds eaten after dispersal significantly increased with seed size, for both stands and all years. In addition, larger seeds (L. harlandii and Q. variabilis) were re-cached more often than smaller ones, which further reduced the relative density among caches and extended dispersal distances. Our findings indicate that greater dispersal distances for larger seeds might benefit the evolution of differences in seed size, and that scatter-hoarding might be advantageous for rodent-dispersed tree species.  相似文献

Few data are available on gibbon populations in peat-swamp forest. In order to assess the importance of this habitat for gibbon conservation, a population of Hylobates agilis albibarbis was surveyed in the Sabangau peat-swamp forest, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. This is an area of about 5,500 km2 of selectively logged peat-swamp forest, which was formally gazetted as a national park during 2005. The study was conducted during June and July 2004 using auditory sampling methods. Five sample areas were selected and each was surveyed for four consecutive days by three teams of researchers at designated listening posts. Researchers recorded compass bearings of, and estimated distances to, singing groups. Nineteen groups were located. Population density is estimated to be 2.16 (±0.46) groups/km2. Sightings occurring either at the listening posts or that were obtained by tracking in on calling groups yielded a mean group size of 3.4 individuals, hence individual gibbon density is estimated to be 7.4 (±1.59) individuals/km2. The density estimates fall at the mid-range of those calculated for other gibbon populations, thus suggesting that peat-swamp forest is an important habitat for gibbon conservation in Borneo. A tentative extrapolation of results suggests a potential gibbon population size of 19,000 individuals within the mixed-swamp forest habitat sub-type in the Sabangau. This represents one of the largest remaining continuous populations of Bornean agile gibbons. The designation of the Sabangau forest as a national park will hopefully address the problem of illegal logging and hunting in the region. We studied the vegetation and population density of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the Petit Loango Reserve, Gabon. The study site consists mainly of primary and secondary forest, and it also includes patches of savanna, inundated forest, and coastal scrub. The density of herbaceous plants of Marantaceae and Zingiberaceae, which serve as important foods for great apes at other study sites, is extremely low. It was very difficult to distinguish between the nests of chimpanzees and gorillas because most gorilla nests were made in trees. We developed a new method to identify the builder of nests via a combination of field observation of nests and fecal samples, and examination of hair samples under a scanning electron microscope. Nests of chimpanzees were mainly in primary forest, and the estimated density (0.78 individual per km 2 ) is higher than the average density in Gabon and comparable to the nest density in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon. Nests of gorillas were mainly in secondary forest, and their estimated density (0.21) is similar to the average next density in Gabon but lower than the gorilla nest density in the Lopé Reserve. The low density of herbaceous foods seemed to influence the density of gorillas but not the density of chimpanzees.  相似文献

In the present study, developmental stability of leaf traits was examined in three natural populations of Plantago major L. (ssp. major), representing two polluted environments (Karaburma and Zemun) and an unpolluted area (Crni Lug). Developmental stability was assessed as fluctuating asymmetry (FA). The magnitude of FA is believed to reflect differences in the ability of individuals to buffer their development in natural populations. We hypothesized that there are differences within characters and among characters in response to environmental conditions. Significant patterns of asymmetry correlations and asymmetry changes were detected both within characters and between characters. The manova results revealed a significant effect of individual and a significant individual × environment interaction on actual asymmetry (logLi ? logRi) and on the amount of asymmetry |(logLi ? logRi)| for leaf width and vein distances within a leaf. Over time, statistically significant and positive correlations of the FA values were detected for each trait separately per sample (population). For both leaf traits, there were differences for (logLi ? logRi) and |(logLi ? logRi)| asymmetry values among individuals within samples in response to yearly variations. Statistically significant and negative correlations for (logLi ? logRi) versus |(logLi ? logRi)| asymmetries were detected for both leaf traits. In summary, our results highlight the importance of differences in the ability of individuals to buffer their development under different environmental conditions and point to the concept that developmental stability is character specific.  相似文献

Questions: What is the effect of the 19th century (pre‐industrialization) landscape pattern on the recovery of climax forests in cool‐temperate mountain areas dominated by Fagus crenata (Japanese beech)? Location: Secondary forests on Mt. Daisen, western Japan. Methods: Vegetation patterns before and after industrialization were obtained from maps drawn in 1898 and 1979. Tree measurements were made in 12 plots in 1997. Correlation between current Fagus crenata dominance and forest edge in the 19th century was analysed using an S‐shaped regression curve. Fagus juvenile density was counted in the plots, and distances from each plot to the five nearest mother trees were measured to determine the dispersal kernel. Results: Secondary grassland covered a substantial area in 1898, whereas forest covered most of the area in 1997. Fagus was dominant in places in the interior forest 100 years ago, and mature Fagus trees were absent in secondary forests that had been grasslands in 1898. The expected number of juveniles decreased to one individual per 100 m2 at 43.5 m from the mother tree. Conclusions: The pre‐industrialization landscape greatly affected recovery of Fagus forest. Forests found on the 1898 vegetation map might have acted as refugia for Fagus. The limited dispersal ability of Fagus suggests that it would take many generations (several hundred years) for Fagus forests to recover at the centre of what had been grasslands in the 19th century.  相似文献

Studies addressing the variation of mating system between plant populations rarely account for the variability of these parameters between individuals within populations, although this variability is often non‐negligible. Here, we propose a new direct method based on paternity analyses (Mixed Effect Mating Model) to estimate individual migration (mi) and selfing rates (si) together with the pollen dispersal kernel. Using this method and the KINDIST approach, we investigated the variation of mating system parameters within and between three populations of Fagus sylvatica along an elevational gradient. Among the mother trees, si varied from 0% to 48%, mi varied from 12% to 86% and the effective number of pollen donors (Nepi) varied from 2 to 364. The mating patterns differed along the gradient, the top population showing higher m and lower s, and a trend to higher Nep than the bottom populations. The phenological lag shaped long‐distance pollen flow both within population (by increasing mi at mother‐tree level) and between populations (by increasing m at high elevation). Rather than the mate density, the canopy density was detected as a major mating system determinant within population; it acted as a barrier to pollen flow, decreasing the proportion of long‐distance pollen flow and increasing si. Overall, the effects of ecological factors on mating system were not the same within vs. between populations across the gradient, and these factors also differed from those traditionally found to shape variation at range‐wide scale, highlighting the interest of multiscale approaches.  相似文献

2007年4月至7月,2007年12月至2008年1月,分别在北京市门头沟区小龙门森林公园、百花山自然保护区以及延庆县松山自然保护区,对同域分布的普通(Sitta europaea)和黑头(Sitta villosa)两种同域分布的类种群密度进行了调查。普通在小龙门森林公园、百花山自然保护区和松山自然保护区的种群密度分别是40.92、96.67只/km2和16.67只/km2。而黑头在上述3个调查区域的种群密度分别是2.03、16.67只/km2和23.33只/km2。普通的总体平均密度(51.4只/km2)高于黑头(20.68只/km2)。两种类分布的海拔和林型存在着差异。普通在海拔高度1070—1350 m的分布比较多。在海拔段1070—1250 m区间,普通的数量随海拔高度的增加呈递增的趋势。而黑头在海拔600—800 m分布较多,随着海拔高度的增加,种群数量呈递减趋势。普通主要分布在阔叶林和针阔混交林中,而黑头主要分布在针叶林中。  相似文献

Recognition that tree recruitment depends on the balance between seed arrival and seedling survival has led to a surge of interest in seed‐dispersal limitation and seedling‐establishment limitation in primary forests. Virtually unaddressed are comparisons of this balance in mature and early successional habitats. We assessed seed rain and seedling recruitment dynamics of tree species in primary forest, secondary forest and pasture released from grazing in a tropical agricultural landscape. Seed to seedling ratios (seed effectiveness; Φi) for 43 species in southern Mexico determined differences in the extent to which seeds produced seedlings by habitat, life history, and dispersal mode. Reproductive potential as estimated by the transition from seed rain to seedling recruitment, differed by habitats, and varied dramatically by life history and dispersal mode. Expected recruit densities (Eit) were higher for animal‐dispersed than wind‐dispersed species, and for non‐pioneer than pioneer species. Non‐pioneers and animal‐dispersed species had higher expected relative recruit abundance (εit) in primary forest (median of 4 seeds recruit?1) whereas in secondary forest wind‐dispersed pioneers had the highest expected relative recruit abundance (median of 16 seeds per recruit). In pastures, wind‐dispersed pioneer species were most successful with many more seeds per recruit (median of 291) than both forest habitats. Seeds per recruit (Φi) appeared to decrease with increase in seed mass for 43 species for which data were available (r = –0.55, P < 0.001). This was associated with a negative correlation of Φi with seed size in primary forest (r = –0.50, P = 0.08 for 13 species); Φi was not correlated with seed size in secondary forest (n = 16) or pasture (n = 14). Metrics of seeds per recruit, expected recruit density and expected relative recruit abundance dramatically illustrate differences in barriers to recruitment in successional habitats.  相似文献

以无脊椎动物为主体的土壤动物是影响凋落物分解的重要生物因素,对维持陆地生态系统物质循环和能量流动具有重要作用。高山林线交错带是高山植被垂直带谱中重要的过渡区域,拥有比相邻生态系统更高的生境复杂性和物种多样性。林线上温度波动和冻融循环频率显著高于针叶林,为了了解林线交错带上环境差异对凋落物分解过程中的土壤动物群落结构和多样性的影响,采用凋落物分解袋的方法,于高山生态系统的两个主要时期,即雪被末期和生长季末期,研究了林线主要代表性灌木——高山柳(Salix cupularis)、高山杜鹃(Rhododendron lapponicum)和红毛花楸(Sorbus rufopilosa)凋落叶分解的土壤动物多样性特征。结果表明:凋落物中的无脊椎动物群落多样性及个体、类群密度随物种、海拔梯度和季节而变化,且季节差异对无脊椎动物多样性的影响比物种和海拔梯度更显著。3个因子的交互作用不仅影响土壤动物群落多样性和均匀度,而且影响群落个体密度和类群密度。雪被末期,凋落物中的无脊椎动物多样性指数H、均匀度指数J及丰富度指数D以针叶林最高,优势度指数C以林线最高;生长季节末期的无脊椎动物类群密度和个体密度显著高于雪被末期。总体上,凋落物中的无脊椎动物群落丰富度以生长季末期最高,林线较针叶林丰富。这意味着,未来气候变暖情景下,灌丛密度增加,凋落物输入量增大,可能导致无脊椎动物多样性增加。  相似文献

Summary Tissue capillarity and diffusion distances were determined for red and white skeletal muscles of adult birds ranging in mass from 10.8 to 6200 g. In addition, literature values for capillarity and diffusion distances in skeletal muscles of mammals were incorporated into the data set. Muscle mass was closely coupled to body mass. However, no significant allometric relations were found for any of the other variables measured. Number of capillaries per fiber was not correlated with cross sectional area of individual muscle fibers. Thus, capillary density decreased in a hyperbolic manner against fiber area and diffusion distance decreased in a hyperbolic manner against the number of capillaries per muscle fiber. Red muscles had significantly higher numbers of capillaries per fiber and significantly shorter diffusion distances than did white muscles. The patterns for tissue capillarity and diffusion distances in avian muscle reported here are similar to values reported previously for mammalian muscles. In both taxanomic groups capillarity and diffusion distances are independent of body mass. The attraction range of a human bait for Aedes albopictus (Diptera, Culicidae) adults and its absolute density in the range were estimated by a new removal method which is applicable to populations with immigrants. In this model, the number of mosquitoes removed during the kth collection unit yk, is expressed as where x0 is the initial number of mosquitoes in the attraction range, a is an index directly proportional to collection efficiency, b is the number of immgirants per collection unit and s(=e−a) is the survival rate of mosquitoes in the attraction range per collection unit. From the result of successive two collections with various interval distances, it was considered that Aedes albopictus adults are attracted to a human bait from the distance of 4–5 m in the bamboo forest on the calm day. The applicability of this method for the population census of forest mosquitoes was discussed.  相似文献

Though there are many problems on the usefulness of the logistic curve, it may be necessary to examine before discussing these problems whether or not the actual data fit to the theoretical values. It has been clarified in this paper that the relation between the population density and its rate of increase per individual described by the differential equation (1) is represented by a straight line on a finite difference diagram on which Ni+1−Ni/Ni values are plotted against Ni+1. Utilizing this linear relation we may examine the fittness of the logistic curve to the actual data and when it is fitted we may estimate the parameters of the logistic equation by (5) and (6). The result of the application of this method to the experimental populations of azuki bean weevil indicates that the relation between parent and progeny densities fits well to the logistic type as has been proved byFujita andUtida (1953) who utilized the linear reltion between 1/R+2σ and parent density where R is the apparent rate of reproduction and σ is a constant dependent primarily upon the length of adult life (0≦σ≦1).  相似文献

A combined experimental and computational study is performed for arginine side chain stacking with the protein α‐helix. Theremostability measurements of Aristaless homeodomain, a helical protein, suggest that mutating the arginine residue R106, R137 or R141, which has the guanidino side chain stacking with the peptide plane, to alanine, destabilizes the protein. The R‐PP stacking has an energy of ~0.2‐0.4 kcal/mol. This stacking interaction mainly comes from dispersion and electrostatics, based on MP2 calculations with the energy decomposition analysis. The calculations also suggest that the stacking stabilizes 2 backbone‐backbone h‐bonds (ii‐4 and i‐3→i‐7) in a cooperative way. Desolvation and electrostatic polarization are responsible for cooperativity with the ii‐4 and i‐3→i‐7 h‐bonds, respectively. This cooperativity is supported by a protein α‐helices h‐bond survey in the pdb databank where stacking shortens the corresponding h‐bond distances.  相似文献

土壤呼吸是森林生态系统碳循环的关键过程,土壤动物可通过自身代谢及影响微生物活动调控土壤呼吸,因此研究土壤动物与土壤呼吸的相互关系对进一步揭示生态系统碳循环的规律和机理具有重要意义。通过野外定点,以帽儿山3种森林生态系统的土壤呼吸及土壤动物为研究对象,探讨不同森林生态系统的土壤呼吸、土壤动物个体密度和生物量的时间变化规律及二者相互关系。结果表明:(1)3种森林生态系统土壤总呼吸速率与土壤异养呼吸速率均呈现先增强后减弱的时间动态变化(P<0.05),且不同森林生态系统土壤异养呼吸速率差异显著(P<0.05),表现为硬阔叶林最高,红松人工林最低;(2)3种森林生态系统土壤动物生物量也具有显著的时间动态变化(P<0.05),均在9月份达到最大,且不同森林生态系统土壤动物个体密度显著不同(P<0.05),蒙古栎林土壤动物个体密度显著小于红松人工林与硬阔叶林;(3)通过回归分析可得,土壤动物数量及生物量的增加抑制了土壤呼吸速率,尤其在生长季初期、末期。研究表明土壤动物可通过抑制微生物生命活动和降低根系呼吸从而对土壤总呼吸及异养呼吸产生负反馈作用,三者是不可分割的整体,与土壤温度、水分等环境因子共同调控着土壤呼吸。  相似文献

Two different, theoretical studies of intramolecular proton-proton distances in polypeptide chains are described. Firstly, the distances between amide, Cα and Cβ protons of neighbouring residues in the amino acid sequence, which correspond to the sterically allowed values for the dihedral angles φi, ψi and χi1, were computed. Secondly, the frequency with which short distances occur between amide, Cα and Cβ protons of neighbouring and distant residues in the amino acid sequence were statistically evaluated in a representative sample of globular protein crystal structures. Both approaches imply that semi-quantitative measurements of short, non-bonding proton-proton distances, e.g. by nuclear Overhauser experiments, should present a reliable and generally applicable method for sequential, individual resonance assignments in protein 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Similar calculations imply that corresponding distance measurements can be used for resonance assignments in the side-chains of the aromatic amino acid residues, asparagine and glutamine, where the complete spin systems cannot usually be identified from through-bond spin-spin coupling connectivities.  相似文献

1 Attack density and breeding success of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) and the abundance of their predators were studied at forest-clearcut edges in southern Finland on Norway spruce, Picea abies, bolts placed at different distances from a forest-clearcut edge. 2 Attack densities of two species, Hylurgops palliatus and H. glabratus, increased markedly towards the forest interior. The breeding success of H. palliatus was increased with increasing distance from the stand edge. None of the recorded 10 bark beetle species was distinctly abundant near the edge, but Pityogenes chalcographus appeared to prefer this zone. 3 There were no significant differences in numbers of bark beetle predators between the forest interior and the edge. Forest-clearcut edge had a significant effect on the desiccation of sample bolts. 4 Thus, forest edge is likely to affect the colonization behaviour and breeding success of bark beetles via host material properties.  相似文献

Wind dispersal of seeds of Metrosideros polymorpha, the dominant tree of rain forests and the main pioneer of volcanic substrates in Hawaii, was measured on a 20-yr-old lava flow downwind of a M. polymorpha forest. Seed rain was concentrated in December and January, when 74.5% of the annual total was dispersed. Annual seed rain at the forest edge was 63,893 seeds/m2, of which 5,580 (8.7%) contained embryos and were potentially viable. Beyond the forest edge, the density of embryo-containing seed decreased to 363, 137, 37, 25, and 20/m2 at distances of 25, 50, 100, 150, and 250 m, respectively. In contrast, the density of established M. polymorpha seedlings remained relatively constant beyond 25 m, a fact suggesting that the density of safe sites for germination and establishment was also constant over the same distance. It was concluded that colonization of the lava flow was limited by the density of safe sites, i.e., conditions for establishment, rather than by seed rain, i.e., dispersal, which was more than sufficient to saturate the available safe sites.  相似文献

Summary Phytomyza ilicicola is a specialist herbivore, the larvae of which mine, and the adults of which feed and oviposit on the developing leaves of American Holly, Ilex opaca. Adult Phytomyza have been shown to discriminate among host plants on the basis of several host and habitat factors. Such discrimination may explain, in part, the observed density variation of larval Phytomyza among individual trees and between forest and suburban habitats. In order for discrimination to influence density, adult Phytomyza must be sufficiently vagile to move among habitats and to encounter many hosts. We experimentally monitored the movement of adults to ask if this were so. In addition we asked whether inter-host movements were altered by resource concentration, and whether vagility offered an escape from parasitism. To answer these questions, three isolated holly trees to serve as colonization sources were selected in early spring, prior to adult emergence. Potted target trees were then placed singly and in groups of four at 3 compass directions around and at 3 different distances (10, 25, and 50 m) from each of the source trees. Six weeks after exposure to adult Phytomyza, the number of feeding punctures and first instar larvae were counted. Clones were then overwintered in cold frames and in early spring, just prior to adult emergence, all pupae were examined for parasitism by the dominant parasitoid Opius striatriventris. Feeding and parasitism were similar at all 3 distances from the source trees, indicating that Opius was at least as vagile as Phytomyza. However, first instar larvae decreased with distance. There was no evidence that resource concentration affected adult movement. Our results suggest that Phytomyza are sufficiently vagile to choose among hosts within and between habitats. However, movement does not translate into equally high oviposition at all distances from a source, nor does it provide an escape from parasitism by Opius.  相似文献
