Coevolution generally refers to the process of two or more organisms adapting to each other as a result of individual selection. Another possibility, however, is that coevolution may result from selection acting directly at the community level. Certain types of multispecies associations, such as lichens, which are a symbiotic association between an alga and a fungus, are examples of simple two species communities that may be units of selection. The study presented here uses two species communities of Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum in an investigation of selection acting at the community level. Selection at the community level is performed on one trait measured in one species and correlated responses in other traits measured both within species and among species are monitored. I demonstrate that community selection, defined as the differential survival and or reproduction of communities, can result in significant changes in the phenotype of a community. The observed changes in the phenotype of a community as a result of community selection included changes in the trait under selection (direct effects of selection), as well as changes in traits that are not under selection (correlated responses to selection). Furthermore, two types of correlated responses to selection were observed. The first, within-species correlated responses to selection, are changes in a trait measured in one species as a result of community selection acting on another trait measured in the same species. The second, between-species correlated responses to selection, are changes in a trait measured in one species as a result of community selection acting on a trait measured in another species. Between species correlated responses to selection are of particular interest because they cannot be mediated by pathways of gene action that are internal to an individual, rather they can be mediated only through ecological pathways. In other words, between-species correlated responses to selection suggest that genetically based interactions among individuals are contributing to the response to community selection. These among species ecological pathways of gene action cannot contribute to a response to selection at a lower level; thus community selection may be able to bring about a response to selection that is qualitatively different from the response selection that would occur as a result of selection acting at a lower level.  相似文献

We describe an experiment exploring the effects of coexistence and population differentiation on the competitive outcome of two species of Tribolium flour beetles, T. castaneum and T. confusum. The only manipulation was whether the populations used in the competitive phase of the study were raised initially in mixed-species communities, single-species populations, or in the standard culture conditions used to maintain stocks in the laboratory. Any treatment effects observed were due to natural selection acting within populations and genetic drift. In the competitive phase, we examined 10 mixed-species communities and 10 pairs of single-species populations. We replicated each community 15 times to provide an assessment of the distribution of competitive outcome. Statistical analysis demonstrates the lineages within the treatments became highly differentiated for all measures of competitive outcome: the outcome of competition (which species won), time to extinction of one of the competing species, and census history. The fraction of the variance that is among lineages has been referred to as the group or community heritability. All of these measures of competitive outcome had high community level heritabilities indicating that competitive ability would evolve rapidly as a result of group or community level selection. In contrast, competitive outcome was not affected by whether the two species had coexisted prior to the competitive phase. This indicates that the outcome of competition was not systematically changed by processes acting within the two species communities.  相似文献

Although a 5 hour monthly exposure for 16 months to 45.0 ppm O3 at 0.3l/min. reduced the numbers of individuals in single-species populations of T. confusum and T. castaneum, it did not result in elimination or a significant decrease in numbers which would be useful in a control program for these flour beetle species.
  2. During the first 5 months of culture, ozone had a stimulating effect on productivity of T. confusum; a similar effect was not noted for T. castaneum.
  3. Control of flour beetles by ozone in stored-products seems unlikely; however, ozone in an integrated control program with ionizing radiation might prove beneficial.
  4. Biological interpretations are offered to explain the responses of these species to ozone exposures.
  5. Further research is warranted to define ozone modifications in pest control programs and on stored-products per se.

Interspecific mating between two species of Tribolium occurs only between males of T. confusum and females of T. castaneum. The reciprocal mating combination was not observed. This pattern of unidirectional mating resulted in a frequency-independent reduction in the number of inseminated females in mixed populations in comparison with single-species mating groups. The ecological significance in terms of interspecific competition, and the possibility of identifying evolutionarily ancestral and derived species from such data are discussed.

Although plants are generally attacked by a community of several species of herbivores, relatively little is known about the strength of natural selection for resistance in multiple‐herbivore communities—particularly how the strength of selection differs among herbivores that feed on different plant organs or how strongly genetic correlations in resistance affect the evolutionary responses of the plant. Here, we report on a field study measuring natural selection for resistance in a diverse community of herbivores of Solanum carolinense. Using linear phenotypic‐selection analyses, we found that directional selection acted to increase resistance to seven species. Selection was strongest to increase resistance to fruit feeders, followed by flower feeders, then leaf feeders. Selection favored a decrease in resistance to a stem borer. Bootstrapping analyses showed that the plant population contained significant genetic variation for each of 14 measured resistance traits and significant covariances in one‐third of the pairwise combinations of resistance traits. These genetic covariances reduced the plant's overall predicted evolutionary response for resistance against the herbivore community by about 60%. Diffuse (co)evolution was widespread in this community, and the diffuse interactions had an overwhelmingly constraining (rather than facilitative) effect on the plant's evolution of resistance.  相似文献

The evolution of mate preferences can be critical for the evolution of reproductive isolation and speciation. Heterospecific interference may carry substantial fitness costs and result in preferences where females are most responsive to the mean conspecific trait with low response to traits that differ from this value. However, when male traits are unbounded by heterospecifics, there may not be selection against females that respond to extreme trait values in the unbounded direction. To test how heterospecifics affected the shape of female response functions, I presented female Oecanthus tree crickets with synthetic calls representing a range of male calls, then measured female phonotaxis to construct response functions. The species with the fastest pulse rates in the community consistently responded to pulse rates faster than those produced by their males, whereas in the intermediate and slowest pulse rate species there was no significant difference between the male trait and the female response. This work suggests that species with the most extreme signal in the community respond to a greater range of signals, potentially resulting in a higher probability of hybridization during secondary contact, and revealing interactions between mate recognition and other aspects of sexual selection.  相似文献

The genetic and ecological effects of population subdividsion were investigated for two wild strains of Tribolium castaneum and two wild strains of T. confusum and compared with the effects of population subdivision on the synthetic laboratory strain of T. castaneum (c-SM), used extensively in earlier experiments. For the c-SM strain, it has been shown repeatedly, for a variety of different population structures (different combinations of effective numbers, Ne, and migration rates, m), that large heritable differences in population growth rate arise among demes during 10 to 15 generations of population subdivision. Because this laboratory strain was synthesized by mass mating several “inbred” strains in 1973 (80 to 100 generations ago), it is possible that it has genetic variation for fitness (measured as the heritable variance among demes in the rate of population increase) unusually large compared to natural populations of flour beetles. In this paper, I report that natural populations of flour beetle exhibit as much or more phenotypic and genetic variation in the effects of population structure on fitness than the laboratory strain, c-SM. The observation of substantial heritable variation for fitness in natural populations is unexpected under additive theory and may be indicative of nonadditive genetic variance.  相似文献

When replicate cultures ofT. confusum andT. castaneum are husbanded together under identical treatment conditions, sometimesT. confusum eliminatesT. castaneum, and other times,T. castaneum wins (i.e., competitive indeterminacy occurs). While several plausible explanations were advanced, the results of Mertz et al. (1976) implicated demographic stochasticity and not classical genetic founder effect as the predominant factor influencing the identity of the winning species. They also observed, however, that the size of the founding population had an influence on the competitive strength ofT. castaneum. The present study shows that the decline in competitive strength that accompanied decreasing founder size inT. castaneum can be amply explained by simple inbreeding depression. The eggs of inbred adults showed an approximate 15% reduction in hatchability when compared to outbred adults. No evidence was found that the decrease in competitive strength was due either to prior history differences or reduced genetic heterogeneity of the founding adults.  相似文献

The hypothesis that a component of genetic variation for polygenic fitness traits is maintained by environmental heterogeneity was tested using an experimental system involving two species of flour beetles, Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum. Replicated populations of each species from a number of environmental treatments were analyzed for various fitness components following almost 60 generations of natural selection. Environmental differences consisted of flours of cereals commonly invaded by natural populations of these insects.—Tests for adaptation to environments were based on experiments in which populations were reared factorially on each flour, such that population treatment x flour interactions could be detected. Measurements were made of survival, growth rate, larval weight, pupal weight, developmental time, fecundity of individuals at low density and fecundity and cannibalism at high density in both fresh and conditioned media.—Flour differences were found to have significant effects on most traits. Evidence for significant genetic variation and significant genotype x environment interaction was also found. However, no evidence could be found to support the hypothesis that genetic variation was maintained by environmental heterogeneity in food resources. The absence of adaptation to the experimental treatments despite the presence of genetic variation in fitness components suggests that pleiotropy may assume an important role in determining net fitness values of polygenes.  相似文献

The spectra of Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum larval digestive peptidases were characterized with respect to the spatial organization of protein digestion in the midgut. The pH of midgut contents in both species increased from 5.6–6.0 in the anterior to 7.0–7.5 in the posterior midgut. However, the pH optimum of the total proteolytic activity of the gut extract from either insect was pH 4.1. Approximately 80% of the total proteolytic activity was in the anterior and 20% in the posterior midgut of either insect when evaluated in buffers simulating the pH and reducing conditions characteristic for each midgut section. The general peptidase activity of gut extracts from either insect in pH 5.6 buffer was mostly due to cysteine peptidases. In the weakly alkaline conditions of the posterior midgut, the serine peptidase contribution was 31 and 41% in T. castaneum and T. confusum, respectively. A postelectrophoretic peptidase activity assay with gelatin also revealed the important contribution of cysteine peptidases in protein digestion in both Tribolium species. The use of a postelectrophoretic activity assay with p‐nitroanilide substrates and specific inhibitors revealed a set of cysteine and serine endopeptidases, 8 and 10 for T. castaneum, and 7 and 9 for T. confusum, respectively. Serine peptidases included trypsin‐, chymotrypsin‐, and elastase‐like enzymes, the latter being for the first time reported in Tenebrionid insects. These data support a complex system of protein digestion in the Tribolium midgut with the fundamental role of cysteine peptidases. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The present study quantified egg and pupal cannibalism, and interspecific predation on eggs and pupae, by larvae and adults of seven species of flour beetle (Tribolium spp.) under laboratory conditions: T. anaphe, T. brevicornis, T. castaneum, T. confusum, T. destructor, T. freemani, and T. madens. 2. Variation among species in cannibalism and predation propensities did not reflect taxonomic affinities within the genus, indicating that these behaviours were shaped by ecology at species level. 3. Within species, larvae and adults displayed different propensities for cannibalism and predation, leading to the conclusion that these behaviours evolve independently in the two life stages. 4. All species behaved as intraguild predators to some degree, especially in the adult stage. 5. Three general patterns of cannibalism and predation were described by principal component mapping and cluster analysis. 6. The first group comprised three cosmopolitan pest species that were more voracious as adults than as larvae: T. castaneum, T. confusum, and T. destructor. It is proposed that stored product environments select for high adult voracity because the costs associated with emigration from such rare, but resource‐rich, habitats intensifies interference competition among adults. 7. The second group consisted of species that inhabit natural environments and that were more voracious as larvae: T. anaphe, T. freemani, and T. madens. Habitats for these species are probably numerous, but generally poor in quality, a situation that intensifies larval competition, while favouring earlier adult emigration. 8. The largest species, T. brevicornis, demonstrated inconsistent voracity between life stages and was the only species with chemically defended pupae. 9. It is proposed that consumption of eggs provides primarily nutritional benefits, whereas consumption of pupae has a more important role in interference competition.  相似文献

Abstract

Tribolium castaneum T. confusum were washed in HPLC-grade methanol, and the methanolic washes were analyzed by UV spectroscopy, reversed phase HPLC, and GC/MS. The methanolic washes from both species contained methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (MBQ) and ethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (EBQ). The amounts of MBQ recovered from the two species were not significantly different, but the amounts of EBQ and total benzoquinones (MBQ + EBQ) recovered from T. castaneum were significantly greater than for those recovered from T. confusum. The methods described are superior to previous methods for isolating, identifying, and quantifying the benzoquinones in these beetles, since they are relatively simple, fast, do not require handling of the beetles, and are sensitive enough to quantify the benzoquinones of a single beetle.  相似文献

Illus. 1959.—Population samples of grass species were transplanted to Lincoln, Nebraska, from two grassland communities within the general distribution of the true prairie community-type. These represented extensive grassland areas near Watertown, South Dakota, and Manhattan, Kansas. True prairie relicts near Colorado Springs, Colorado and in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota were also studied in the transplant garden. Only in one species, Stipa spartea Trin., were the transplanted populations essentially similar in behavior. In 8 of the species, Koeleria cristata (L.) Pers., Bouteloua gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag., B. curtipendula (Michx.) Torr., Schizachyrium scoparium Nash, Andropogon gerardi Vitman, Panicum virgatum L., Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash, and Sporobolus heterolepis (A. Gray) A. Gray, the Manhattan populations were the latest flowering. In Elymus canadensis L., the Manhattan population was the earliest flowering. The abstraction of two communities into a true prairie type of community with other communities of similar species-populations is a convenient method for discussing distributional phenomena. However, extreme caution must be used in generalizing about characteristics other than distributional. If the 10 species in the present study were designated by letters, the Watertown and Manhattan communities could be compared ecologically as a b' c d e f g h i j and a b c' d' e' f' g' h' i' j'. The use of taxonomic relationship in vegetational studies is convenient for the reduction of sample size, but the vital aspect of studying variation within the species is in the determination of harmony between vegetation and its habitat. The relict communities are in adjustment with their habitats and represent the results of natural selection in favoring early-flowering variants within a number of different species. The key to distribution of the true prairie vegetation, widespread or relict, lies in the harmony between a habitat variable and a vegetation variable. Through natural selection, each stand of true prairie may be fundamentally different from any other stand.  相似文献

The norm of reaction, the set of average phenotypes produced by a genotype in different environments, can be affected by spatial variation in natural selection especially when there exists genotype-environment interaction. In subdivided populations, the greater the genotype-environment interaction variance and the lower the migration rate, the more independent are the possible evolutionary trajectories for local adaptation. I examined genotype-environment interaction in the rate of population increase for lineages randomly derived from a wild population of Tribolium castaneum across a series of ecologically important environments. The lineages were derived from an outbred, wild-caught population by 14 generations of random genetic drift, during which the effective size of each lineage was approximately 22 breeding adults. The environments studied were the classic temperate-wet and cold-dry climates of Park (1954) in factorial combination with two genetic strains of a congeneric competitor, T. confusum. Much among-lineage genetic variation for rate of population increase was found for each of these ecologically important environments of climate and competition. Genotype-environment interaction accounted for 40.5% of the total among-lineage variance in rate of population increase signifying that the performance of a lineage in one environment is not necessarily a good predictor of its performance in another. Changing the genetic identity of the competitor changed the rate of increase of some lineages as much or more than changing the climatic conditions of temperature and humidity. This is the first empirical study to characterize the genotype-environment interaction variance associated with genetic variation in a competing congeneric species. This competitor-specific genetic variation in competitive ability may play an important role in coevolution in subdivided populations.  相似文献

Differential selection in a heterogeneous environment is thought to promote the maintenance of ecologically significant genetic variation. Variation is maintained when selection is counterbalanced by the homogenizing effects of gene flow and random mating. In this study, we examine the relative importance of differential selection and gene flow in maintaining genetic variation in Papilio glaucus. Differential selection on traits contributing to successful use of host plants (oviposition preference and larval performance) was assessed by comparing the responses of southern Ohio, north central Georgia, and southern Florida populations of P. glaucus to three hosts: Liriodendron tulipifera, Magnolia virginiana, and Prunus serotina. Gene flow among populations was estimated using allozyme frequencies from nine polymorphic loci. Significant genetic differentiation was observed among populations for both oviposition preference and larval performance. This differentiation was interpreted to be the result of selection acting on Florida P. glaucus for enhanced use of Magnolia, the prevalent host in Florida. In contrast, no evidence of population differentiation was revealed by allozyme frequencies. FST-values were very small and Nm, an estimate of the relative strengths of gene flow and genetic drift, was large, indicating that genetic exchange among P. glaucus populations is relatively unrestricted. The contrasting patterns of spatial differentiation for host-use traits and lack of differentiation for electrophoretically detectable variation implies that differential selection among populations will be counterbalanced by gene flow, thereby maintaining genetic variation for host-use traits.  相似文献

Observations on behavioural activity involved in the host selection by secondary pests of stored grains, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Linnaeus), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) and Tribolium confusum J. du Val, with respect to intact and mechanically or naturally damaged kernels are reported. Our results indicate that the attraction of secondary pests is facilitated by broken grain kernels, which resulted from either mechanical damage during harvesting and/or binning procedures, or the feeding activity of primary insect pests. Insect damaged kernels were more attractive to O. surinamensis, T. castaneum and T. confusum than whole kernels; in addition insect damaged kernels elicit more attractiveness than mechanically split kernels. The damage caused by primary pests, such as Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) and Sitophilus oryzae (Linnaeus), on whole kernels may facilitate colonization by secondary pests, which continue damaging the cereals. O. surinamensis, T. castaneum and T. confusum utilize the grain volatile odours to distinguish whether the grain kernels of the stored cereals are damaged mechanically or by insects.  相似文献

Community coalescence, the mixing of multiple communities, is ubiquitous in natural microbial communities. During coalescence, theory suggests the success of a population will be enhanced by the presence of species it has coevolved with (relative to foreign species), because coevolution will result in greater resource specialization to minimize competition. Thus, more coevolved communities should dominate over less coevolved communities during coalescence events. We test these hypotheses using the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens which diversifies into coexisting niche‐specialist morphotypes. We first evolved replicate populations for ~40 generations and then isolated evolved genotypes. In a series of competition trials, we determined if using coevolved versus random genotypes affected the relative performance of “communities” of single and multiple genotypes. We found no effect of coevolutionary history on either genotype fitness or community performance, which suggests parallel (co)evolution between communities. However, fitness was enhanced by the presence of other genotypes of the same strain type (wild‐type or an isogenic strain with a LacZ marker; the inclusion of the latter necessary to distinguish genotypes during competition), indicative of local adaptation with respect to genetic background. Our results are the first to investigate the effect of (co)evolution on the outcome of coalescence and suggest that when input populations are functionally similar and added at equal mixing ratios, the outcome community may not be asymmetrically dominated by either input population.  相似文献

Serpentine soils are rich in heavy metals and have a distinctive flora. Silene dioica is a member of the Scandinavian serpentine plant community but is also widespread outside serpentine soils. To study the population genetic consequences of serpentine stress and the origin and evolution of serpentine populations we analyzed the isozyme genetic structure of S. dioica. Seventeen populations located in the mountains of Västerbotten and Jämtland, central Sweden, were investigated by starch gel enzyme electrophoresis. About one half of the populations grow in serpentine soils and the rest on adjacent non-serpentine sites. Analyses of allele frequencies show that both serpentine and non-serpentine populations in the northern part of the studied area (Västerbotten) are genetically similar. Evidently serpentine does not exert strong selection acting upon isozyme loci. In the south (Jämtland), however, the serpentine populations exhibit genetic differentiation. This allozyme divergence is probably not due to direct selection but rather represents the effects of isolation and genetic drift. The results suggest that S. dioica has colonized serpentine repeatedly and that the tolerant populations have a multiple origin.  相似文献

When populations are exposed to different environments, evolutionary processes can lead either to genetically differentiated strains or to the appearance of increased generalism at the individual level. For evolution to occur, genetic variability in performance in different environments is required. Here, intraspecific genetic variation across environments was estimated in the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) by comparing the responses of two strains of T. castaneum to different flour types. Replicated groups from each strain were allowed to develop on either the standard whole wheat medium or on one of four novel flours (wheat, rice, corn and oat). In several of the novel flours, clear differences in mean development time or population size of one or both strains were seen relative to performance in the standard medium. Moreover, the strains differed significantly in their phenotypic responses to the flours. One strain did particularly poorly on oat flour. Reduced oviposition, reduced larval survivorship and increased larval cannibalism were examined as possible causes of the low productivity on oat flour. These three factors accounted for about 70% of the reduction in population size when this strain oviposited and developed in oat flour. The difference between these two outbred strains in response to these five flours suggests that genetic variation in resource use is present within T. castaneum and may also be present within strains and natural populations in grain storage facilities. Such variation would permit an evolutionary response to selection in multiple environments (flours). This process has agricultural implications when several types of grain are stored in a single location because it could eventually lead to the evolution of highly generalized populations of T. castaneum, an important pest of stored products.  相似文献

A series of field trials were conducted in a commercial food storage facility to evaluate exposure of stored‐product insects to aerosol formulations of synergized pyrethrins and the insect growth regulator methoprene. When adults of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), the red flour beetle, and Tribolium confusum (Jacqueline DuVal), the confused flour beetle were exposed with and without a food source to synergized pyrethrin aerosol, there was no difference in adult mortality with respect to availability of food at either 7 or 14 days after exposure (P≥ 0.05). However, mortality was lower in T. confusum (40.4% and 79.3% with flour at 7 and 14 days, 38.9% and 84.8% without flour at 7 and 14 days) compared to T. castaneum (96.5% and 99.8% with flour at 7 and 14 days, 91.0% and 98.7% without flour at 7 and 14 days). Few late‐stage larvae and pupae of either species exposed to the pyrethrin aerosol emerged as adults. In tests with methoprene aerosol, adult emergence of exposed 3‐and 4‐week‐old larvae of T. confusum was less than 2%. Only 0.3% of 4‐week‐old larvae of T. castaneum exposed in open and obstructed areas emerged as adults. Emergence of adults from eggs of Plodia interpunctella (Hübner), the Indianmeal moth, embedded in culture media and exposed to the methoprene aerosol was 13.2%± 3.5%. Results show that the aerosols evaluated in our study could give effective control of some of the major stored‐product insect pests in commercial food storage facilities, and may offer an alternative to fumigation.  相似文献
