Larval compound (jointed) setae of the polychaete Nereis vexillosa Grube were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy and by polarization microscopy. Long-bladed spinigers and short-bladed falcigers are described. The proximal shaft of each of these types of setae flares distally into a serrated collar and encloses the proximal end of a toothed blade. The collar projects on one side as a boss. The blade and the cortex of the shaft have longitudinal channels. A large excentric cavity in the shaft (the medullary channel) contains a loose meshwork of trabeculae. In the distal part of the shaft these trabeculae are aggregated into diaphragms. The seta is invested with an electron dense layer of enamel. Juvenile setae contain both chitin and protein. With respect to the long axis of the seta, the blade and the cortex of the shaft are positively birefringent and the medullary diaphragms are negatively birefringent. KOH extraction renders the setae negative to a test for protein and reverses the sign of birefringence of the cortical material of the shaft.  相似文献

Ricinuleids are one of the least investigated groups of Arachnida. In particular, knowledge of their ultrastructure is poor. Observations of the distal tarsomeres of ricinuleids show differences in their shape and equipment of surface structures. Legs I and II are used by the Ricinulei to explore their surroundings with tentative movements. The tarsomeres of these legs show similarities in shape and surface structures that distinguish them from those of legs III and IV. In this study, 11 different structures of the tarsomere surfaces of two cave-dwelling species, Pseudocellus pearsei and P. boneti from México, were investigated for the first time with scanning and transmission electron microscopy and discussed regarding their possible function: 1) a single treelike ramifying seta resembles a no pore single-walled (np-sw) sensillum; 2) setae occurring in a small number and possessing a bipartite shaft represent terminal pore single-walled (tp-sw) sensilla. The surface of the proximal half of the shaft shows small branches. The distal half has a smooth surface; 3) long setae with conspicuous longitudinal lamellae show characteristics of chemoreceptive wall pore single-walled (wp-sw) sensilla; 4) frequent small wp-sw sensilla with flat and irregular lamellae; 5) very short wp-sw sensilla occurring solitary or in groups; 6) a few short setae with smooth surface correspond to wp-sw sensilla; 7) a single short clubbed seta articulating in a flat pit is considered to be a np-sw sensillum; 8) common long setae with a pointed tip show characteristics of mechanoreceptive np-sw sensilla; 9) ventral setae with adhesive and mechanosensory function are accompanied by multicellular "class III" glands; 10) slit organs with mechanoreceptive function; and 11) dome-like tubercles with no indication of sensorial function. Several of these sensilla form a sensory field on the dorsofrontal surface which is particularly pronounced on the distal tarsomeres of legs I and II.  相似文献

The fifth pereiopods (P5) in Anomala are specialized appendages used mainly for grooming. We studied the articulated cuticular outgrowths, setae, on the distal segments of the P5 in 40 species from 18 Anomala families using light and scanning electron microscopy. Five general classes of setae can be found on the P5: serrate, serrulate and simple setae which all appear bristle-like, and tooth-like and scale-like cuspidate setae. We classified the bristle-like setae according to criteria of shape and the arrangement of distinct outgrowths – denticles and setules – on the shaft of the seta. In this way we were able to distinguish eleven mainly serrate and serrulate types of seta. Some setal types imply homology due to their distinctness and could thus help to solve problematic phylogenetic questions. One setal type, for example, is only present in pagurid hermit crabs and king crabs, which corroborates the theory that these two morphologically very dissimilar groups are, in fact, closely related.  相似文献

Dinetia nycterobia gen. et sp. n. (Draconematidae, Prochaetosomatinae) is described from a hydrothermal site of the East Pacific Rise. The new genus is characterized by body annulation reaching lip region and including spiral amphids, cuticle not thickened in head region, cephalic adhesion tubes without expanded base located in cervical region, pharynx with terminal bulb provided with a thick cuticularized lumen wall, and posterior adhesion tubes with bell-shaped end. Dinetia nycterobia , the type species, is characterized by the number of cephalic adhesion tubes (19 in male, 15 in female) and of the 4 rows of posterior adhesion tubes (5 tubes lateral, 14–19 subventral in male, 10–15 lateral, 13–20 subventral in female) and the shape and size of the spicules. Cephalochaetosoma pacificum notium subsp. n. from the Fiji deep-sea closely resemble C. pacificum pacificum from Philippines deep-sea but differs in male by the number of sublateral posterior adhesion tubes, the shape and size of the spicules, the number of cloacal setae, the structure of the testis and in both sexes by the spiny cuticular ornamentation, the shorter labial setae and morphometric data. A new genus and new species of Draconematidae is provisionally described, based on the observation of juvenile specimens from the polymetallic nodule formation.  相似文献

Cellular growth in higher plants is generated (powered) by internal turgor pressure. Basic physics shows that the pressure required to deform a plastic tube by elongation is inversely proportional to the tube''s diameter. Accordingly, the turgor required to drive tip growth of very narrow cylindrical plant cells becomes very high, probably too high to be realized in living cells. The non-involvement of turgor in tip growth is demonstrated directly in living diatoms secreting fine tubular spines of silica. In some species, the membrane at the tip of the rigid tube is deformed inwards into its lumen during normal extension, whereas in other species, many cells are partly plasmolysed during normal, active spine (''seta'') extension. Evidence from other cells is consistent with the general conclusion that turgor is not significant in tip growth. We support the alternative hypothesis proposed by M. Harold and colleagues that extension in tip cells can be amoeboid, driven by cycling of the actin cytoskeleton. Actively growing setae display an internal, fibrous, collar-like sleeve, probably of actin at the tip; it is visualized as a molecular treadmill (''nanomachine'') that uses as its support-base the rigid tube that has just been secreted. This scenario can thereby explain how the perfectly even diameter of very long, fine setae is maintained throughout their extension, even when their tips are far distant from the cell body.  相似文献

The theraphosid spider Theraphosa leblondi (Latreille) produces a sibilant, hissing sound during defensive displays. This sound is produced using a previously undescribed method of stridulation: setal entanglement. The opposing surfaces of the femora of the pedipalps, first, and second pair of legs are clothed in unique setae which have their distal portion bearing hooks and a shaft clothed in filaments. Experimental ablations described here showed these plumose setae to be the site of sound production. Based on examination of the fine structure of these setae, we propose that the hissing sound is produced by the entanglement and pulling apart of the hooks at the ends of the setae on one leg surface and the long, plumose filaments on the median part of the setae on the opposing leg surface. Evidence presented suggests that this is a case of an acoustic aposematic display directed at vertebrate predators.  相似文献

Crystals are described which are located in the distal intestinal cells of the fourth stage larva of Haemonchus contortus and in the distal intestinal lumen of both larvae and adults of Ostertagia ostertagi.The crystals are thought to be by-products of degenerative processes in these nematodes. They are irregular hexagonal rod-shaped structures which measure approx. 2.5 × 15 um in H. contortus. In O. ostertagi they are also irregular hexagonal structures commonly reaching dimensions of 25 × 50 μm, but they vary considerably in size and are not rod-shaped.Histochemical tests. X-ray analysis and electron microscope studies reveal that both types of crystal contain protein and the element sulphur and are of uniform composition, being neither hollow nor having a core of different refractive index.They differ in that the crystals of O. ostertagi contain more sulphur, exhibit birefringence under polarized light, stain with methylene blue, toluidine blue and osmium tetroxide. The crystals from H. contortus on the other hand are not birefringent and do not stain with the dyes mentioned above.  相似文献

The mechanoreceptors of the first antennae of Pleuromamma xiphias, a mesopelagic calanoid copepod, are critical for the detection of potential threats. These receptors exceed the physiological performance of other crustacean mechanoreceptors in sensitivity to water velocities as well as in frequency response. A study of these receptors was initiated to elucidate structure–function relationships. Morphologically, the receptors resemble the arthropod scolopidial organs by the presence of a scolopale tube. However, the rigidity of the copepod receptors greatly exceeds those described for crustaceans and other arthropods. The scolopale tube completely encloses the distal dendrites and it is firmly anchored to the cuticle. Microtubules are organized in register and arise from microtubule subfibers associated with crescent-shaped rods which extend from the basal body region to the setal socket. The distal dendrites are filled with a large number of cross-linked microtubules. Termination of the distal dendrites inside the lumen of the setae is gradual with a firm anchoring to the cuticle. A likely mechanism for mechanotransduction would involve a linkage between individual microtubules and mechano-gated channels in the dendritic membrane. The rigidity probably contributes to the high frequency sensitivity, and termination of the dendrite inside the seta increases the overall sensitivity of these receptors.  相似文献

The unusual idiosomal glands of a water mite Teutonia cometes (Koch 1837) were examined by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy as well as on semi-thin sections. One pair of these glands is situated ventrally in the body cavity of the idiosoma. They run posteriorly from the terminal opening (distal end) on epimeres IV and gradually dilate to their proximal blind end. The terminal opening of each gland is armed with the two fine hair-like mechanoreceptive sensilla (‘pre-anal external’ setae). The proximal part of the glands is formed of columnar secretory epithelium with a voluminous central lumen containing a large single ‘globule’ of electron-dense secretory material. The secretory gland cells contain large nuclei and intensively developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. Secretory granules of Golgi origin are scattered throughout the cell volume in small groups and are discharged from the cells into the lumen between the scarce apical microvilli. The distal part of the glands is formed of another cell type that is not secretory. These cells are composed of narrow strips of the cytoplasm leaving the large intracellular vacuoles. A short excretory cuticular duct formed by special excretory duct cells connects the glands with the external medium. At the base of the terminal opening a cuticular funnel strengthens the gland termination. At the apex of this funnel a valve prevents back-flow of the extruded secretion. These glands, as other dermal glands of water mites, are thought to play a protective role and react to external stimuli with the help of the hair-like sensilla.  相似文献

Two new species of the genus Diaphanosoma, D. oligosetum and D. dorotheae, from Louisiana and North Carolina respectively, are described. The former species has large head with protruding dorsal part, large lanceolate spine on the basipodite's distal outer end, an extremely reduced number of antennal setae, up to six in adult specimens, and unique armament of valve margin. On the whole, it shows the pronounced combination of primitive and specialized morphological traits. D. dorotheae is a member of D. brachyurum species group differing from its other known representatives in presence of a small but very conspicuous spine on the end of proximal segment of antennal exopodite and a variable number of setae (seven or eight) on the distal segment of the branch. Adult rat cardiac muscle cells were isolated from the ventricle by a retrograde perfusion technique through the aorta (Nag and Zak, 1979). These single, isolated cardiac muscle cells were cultured for 4 weeks. Throughout the culture period, a small number of muscle cells retained their cylindrical shape, while the rest exhibited alterations in shape and size assuming a flattened body of irregular shape with pseudopodia-like processes and thereby resembling embryonic/neonatal cardiac muscle cells in culture. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the cylindrical muscle cells contained compactly arranged myofibrils and cellular organelles, similar to those of freshly isolated and in vivo cells. A few irregularly shaped cardiac muscle cells were similar to the cylindrical cells in their internal structural organization. Most of the irregular cells exhibited less myofibrillar content than that of the freshly dissociated and in vivo cells. Myofibrils in the irregular cells were widely spaced and myofilament of some of the myofibrils were loosely bunched. In addition, scattered patches of myofibrils and free myofilaments were observed in many of these cells. The internal structural organization of these irregularly shaped cardiac muscle cells closely resembled the embryonic and neonatal cardiac muscle cells in vitro and in vivo. Most of the muscle cells in culture continued to contract spontaneously, and electron microscope studies clearly indicated that they underwent dedifferentiation. Autoradiography studies demonstrated that the cylindrical and irregularly shaped cardiac muscle cells underwent DNA synthesis and cell division in culture.  相似文献

Typical thoracic setae are composed of longitudinally arranged cylinders ending as teeth at the oblique distal surface. Most thoracic 'blades' are rounded in cross section and show bilateral asymmetry. Some have teeth in oblique rows ("cross striations") on the side adjoining the tube wall. Sickle setae found posteriorly on the thorax have distal portions like abdominal setae. These are flat, each composed mainly of a palisade of spatulate units. On one side cylindrical elements may also be present, in patterns which are characteristic of some taxa. Uncini are made of rows (sometimes single) of shorter cylindrical elements with hooked ends pointing anteriorly. Anterior thoracic hooks are usually blunt, but pointed in the genus Janua. The collar setae assist withdrawal into the tube, the abdominal setae help with emergence, whilst other thoracic setae act as distance pieces, pushing the body to anchor the thoracic uncini against the opposite wall. The other uncini are brought into use by the prehensile abdomen. The flaccid ends of the sickle setae are readily lost in some taxa and their development or loss may reflect unimportant variations in strength of the adjacent abdominal field. Fin and blade setae are not very different from simple setae and the natural grouping of the genera into subfamilies shows that changes from one form of collar seta to another have occurred independently several times.  相似文献

The tarsal setae in 97 species of Leiodidae and eight outgroups were examined using SEM imaging and dissections. Modified adhesive setae present in males are referred to as “male tenent setae” (MTS). In most cases, dilated tarsomeres were associated with MTS, which were always present on the protarsi and sometimes the mesotarsi. MTS are reported for the first time on the mesotarsi of Leptodirini and on the metatarsi in two genera of Sogdini. Contrary to reports in the literature, the reduction in the number of the MTS bearing mesotarsomeres is considered a derived condition. Both sexes of Leptinus (Platypsyllinae) have modified setae (referred to as tenent setae in the literature), probably related to their specialised association with mammals, and a patch of MTS was recognized for the first time among those modified setae among males. Four main types of MTS are recognised: (1) a plesiomorphic discoidal type that has a shaft with a round cross-section and maintains a similar diameter throughout its length until forming the expanded discoidal terminal plate; (2) a minidiscoidal type, similar to discoidal but with a relatively small terminal plate, found in Cholevinae; (3) a conical type, present in Leiodinae (excluding Estadiini) where the shaft increases in diameter until forming the terminal plate; and (4) a spatulate type, where an even wider terminal plate has a lateral projection, derived from the conical form and synapomorphic for the leiodine tribes Pseudoliodini, Scotocryptini, and possibly Agathidiini.  相似文献

Zoospores at various developmental stages in Hydrodictyon reticulatum were isolated from parent cells and cultured in Waris medium. Isolated zoospores grew to mature vegetative cells, and were able to reproduce zoo-spores that formed daughter hexagonal nets. Three types of shape appeared in cells 24 h after isolation: cylindrical, Y-shaped and 4-armed type. Protrusions of Y-shaped or 4-armed cells were formed at an angle of about 120° to the long axis of the cell. When cells were isolated at later stages, more cells became cylindrical in shape and fewer ceils became Y-shaped or 4-armed, Direction of cell growth also seemed to depend largely on the developmental stages of the zoospores. The later the isolated stages were, the more the cells elongated along the long axis of the zoospores.  相似文献
