Males and females differ physiologically, but they also do different things. Thus, we when we note sex differences in average rates of parasite prevalence, incidence or intensity of infection, or in clinical outcome, we may attribute such differences either to the different physiology, or to different activities, or to some combination of differences between the sexes. Hence the subject of this month's debate-to explore the question of ‘why do certain males or females have higher or lower incidence or prevalence or severity of parasitic infection?’ Don Bundy opens with a discussion of the epidemiological patterns, while Jim Alexander and Bill Stimson explore some of the physiological effects of sex and sex hormones on the host's immune response to infection.  相似文献

Maternally inherited Wolbachia bacteria are extremely widespread among insects and their presence is usually associated with parasitic modifications of host fitness. Wolbachia pipientis infects Drosophila melanogaster populations from all continents, but their persistence in this species occurs despite any strong parasitic effects. Here, we have investigated the symbiosis between Wolbachia and D. melanogaster and found that Wolbachia infection can have significant survival and fecundity effects. Relative to uninfected flies, infected females from three fly strains showed enhanced survival or fecundity associated with Wolbachia infection, one strain showed both and one strain responded positively to Wolbachia removal. We found no difference in egg hatch rates (cytoplasmic incompatibility) for crosses between infected males and uninfected females, although there were fecundity differences. Females from this cross consistently produced fewer eggs than infected females and these fecundity differences could promote the spread of infection just like cytoplasmic incompatibility. More surprising, we found that infected females often had the greatest fecundity when mated to uninfected males. This could also promote the spread of Wolbachia infection, though here the fitness benefits would also help to spread infection when Wolbachia are rare. We suggest that variable fitness effects, in both sexes, and which interact strongly with the genetic background of the host, could increase cytoplasmic drive rates in some genotypes and help explain the widespread persistence of Wolbachia bacteria in D. melanogaster populations. These interactions may further explain why many D. melanogaster populations are polymorphic for Wolbachia infection. We discuss our results in the context of host-symbiont co-evolution.  相似文献

The generative mechanism(s) of predisposition to Ascaris infection are currently unknown. While many factors play a role in interindividual infection intensity, much focus has been placed on the host's immunological response to infection and the underlying genetics. The present review describes the research conducted that has examined various immunological parameters and genetic factors that may play a role in resistance to ascariasis. We also discuss the contribution that animal models have made to our understanding of resistance to the parasitic roundworm and their role in possible future work.  相似文献

The ability of gonadal hormones to influence and induce diverse immunological functions during the course of a number of parasitic infections has been extensively studied in the latest decades. Dehydroepiandrosterone and its sulfate are the most abundant steroid hormones secreted by the human adrenal cortex and are considered potent immune-activators. The effects of orchiectomy on the course of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in rats, treated and untreated with DHEA were examined, by comparing blood and cardiac parasitism, macrophage numbers, nitric oxide and IFN-γ levels. Orchiectomy enhanced resistance against infection with elevated numbers of macrophages, enhanced concentrations of NO and IFN-γ and reduced amastigote burdens in heart when compared to control animals. DHEA replacement exerted a synergistic effect, up-modulating the immune response. Male sex steroids appear to play fundamental role in determining the outcome of disease, through the regulation and modulation of the activity of the immune response.  相似文献

Males generally exhibit reduced immune responses as well as increased intensity and prevalence of infections compared to female conspecifics. Physiologically, these sex differences may reflect the immunosuppressive effects of androgens. In addition to suppressing immune function, androgens maintain several characteristics important for reproductive success. Thus, a dynamic relationship is assumed to exist among hormones, secondary sex traits, and the immune system. Ultimately, the extent to which this relationship exists may be related to the mating system. Because polygynous males generally have higher circulating testosterone concentrations and rely more heavily on testosterone-dependent traits for reproductive success than monogamous males, sex differences in immune function are hypothesised to be more pronounced among polygynous as compared to monogamous species. Additionally, if secondary sex traits are used to advertise infection status, then females should be able to use the condition of male secondary sex traits to discern the immune/infection status of males during mate selection. The purpose of this review is to survey current studies that examine both the proximate mechanisms and ultimate function of variation in immune function and susceptibility to infection and determine whether immunological variation influences mate preference and possibly reproductive success.  相似文献

The current experiments occurred in the context of disputes in the literature concerning whether inescapable stress causes differential changes in sensory reactivity, which could lead to differences in many learning procedures. We tested rats for differences in sensitivity and responsivity to acoustic stimuli through the use of the acoustic startle response (ASR) 2 h after stressor exposure and ambulatory activity 24 h later in the open field. Stressed females showed reduced responsivity to acoustic stimuli with no apparent shift in stimulus sensitivity. Males did not show differences in either reactivity index following stressor exposure. Reduced responsivity did not occur if females had been OVX (OVX alone did not effect stimulus responsivity or sensitivity). All groups that experienced tailshock stress also had reduced open field activity 24 h later. Restraint for 2 h did not reduce stimulus responsivity in the ASR or open field activity in female rats. Acute reductions in ASRs after a painful stressor appear to be a feature specific to females, with an apparent role of ovarian hormones as a modulator of the effect. Possible hormone and/or immunological mechanisms of these sex-specific effects are discussed. Understanding the mechanisms of this stressor-induced reduction in sensory reactivity could advance our knowledge of how individual differences in ovarian hormone levels influence the physical and psychological processes by which females acutely respond and later recover from traumatic events.  相似文献

It is a confirmed fact that in females both the humoral and cell mediated immune response is more active than in males. A large amount of information supports the view that hormones of the endocrine system are intimately involved in this immunological dimorphism. Such hormones include the gonadal steroids, the adrenal glucocorticoids, growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (Prl) from the pituitary, thymic hormones, and substances generated by activated lymphocytes. It is suggested that a complex medley of these hormonal interactions effect both developing lymphocytes within the microenvironment and regulate adult effector cells. The most important of these hormonal interactions leading to immunological dimorphism are the effects elicited by estrogen (E) elaborated at elevated levels from the female ovary after puberty. Elevated E leads to basal GH secretion, increased Prl, and increased thymosin release, all of which are hypothesized to effect lymphocyte development and stimulate adult T- and B-cell function in females. Interactions of hormonal regulatory axes involving the hypothalamus, pituitary, gonads, adrenals, and thymus are also thought to be involved. Factors elaborated by activated immune cells including IL-1 and IL-2 may also play a role in down regulation of these responses. Finally, genetic components are also considered pertinent especially under conditions of pathological disequilibrium leading to autoimmune disease. While the benefits provided by immunological dimorphism are still not entirely clarified, since sex hormones are intimately involved in immunological regulation it is quite possible that the increased immune response in females allows them to compensate for the increased physiological stress which accompanies reproduction. The final outcome would thus be the assurance of reproductive success of the species.  相似文献

Sex differences in mouse models of asthma   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Differences in disease susceptibility and prognosis between men and women are known to occur in the incidence and development of neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, and immunological disorders. In the lung there are also sex-based differences in the incidence, prevalence, and pathogenesis of lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, COPD, and asthma. In the general population, sex-based differences in asthma have been shown by epidemiologic studies, but unfortunately these studies are not consistent in their conclusions. This variability in human epidemiological studies justifies the need for more focused studies of the effects of specific hormones. Such specific mechanistic studies can most easily be performed in animal models, and since mouse models have the potential for separating specific genetic factors from environmental and exogenous factors, this species has become increasingly important in the design, analysis, and interpretation of asthma research. This review will document the male and female differences in airway function of na?ve and sensitized mouse models, as well as the great variability in the functional measurements of airway tone. Until the situation is better understood, this variability between males and females should be kept in mind when designing, analyzing, and interpreting studies of smooth muscle responses in animal models and human subjects.  相似文献

The antennal forms and sensilla of 114 species of bees (Hymenoptera : Apoidea), representing all major lineages, were compared to ascertain the relationship between sensory structures and behavior. For all taxa, males and females of parasitic bee species do not differ significantly in the relative sizes of their antennal structures. For non-parasitic species, females have relatively longer scapes, but relatively shorter flagella. There are significant taxonomic effects in these relationships; the family Megachilidae is aberrant. These findings may relate to similarities in search behavior of males (both parasitic and non-parasitic) and parasitic females, which in general may be more dependent on longer-range olfactory cues, while non-parasitic females also use visual cues and contact or short-range olfactory cues. In the family Halictidae, there is a significant association between body-size and density of sensilla placodea. Among non-parasitic female bees, pollen specialists and generalists do not differ in the relative density of sensilla. Parasitic forms in Halictidae, however, have fewer sensilla placodea per unit aarea than do their hosts.  相似文献

Investigations of parasite-mediated sexual selection have concentratedon the effects of parasites on males. Differences in femalesusceptibility to parasitic infection may also cause variationin reproductive behavior. I propose two alternative hypothesesto explain how infected females may alter their mate samplingbehavior. In the first hypothesis, infected females sample fewerprospective mates because chronic parasitic infection imposesenergetic costs that limit the time and calories that a femalecan expend in mate searching. A novel alternative hypothesisis that females recognize their own susceptibility to infectionand thus invest more time searching for a male phenotype thatindicates he offers genes complementary to her genome. In recombination, these good genes would allow her offspring to better resistparasites despite their mother's susceptibility. I examinedthe mate sampling behavior of experimentally infected wild turkeyhens when presented with an array of males, and compared themto control hens. Infected females did not invest more time assessingindividuals, did not wait longer to choose a male, nor werethey less likely to solicit during the trial. They did differfrom control females in that they visited more males beforesoliciting copulation and exhibited different preference functionsfor snood length. These results suggest that females are notso energetically restricted by latent coccidia infection thatthey must hurry to find a mate. Instead, it appears that infectedfemales assess a larger set of males as prospective mates, perhapsto increase the opportunity to obtain complementary genes forparasite resistance.  相似文献

The ecological theory of adaptive radiation states that differences in ecological circumstances among local populations are the cause of divergence that leads to speciation. The role of parasites in contributing to divergence has seldom been considered, despite their ubiquity and known selective effects. The potential for parasites to contribute to divergence between closely related taxa was examined by quantifying the variation in parasite burdens between sympatric three-spined stickleback species ( Gasterosteus aculeatus complex) in two lakes in coastal British Columbia, Canada. In doing so the relative importance of geographical differences between lakes and trophic or microhabitat differences between species within lakes were evaluated. The entire metazoan parasite burdens of a total of 255 limnetic and benthic sticklebacks in Paxton and Priest lakes were assayed over five time points between spring and autumn. Despite their sympatric distributions, there were large differences in parasite burdens between benthic and limnetic sticklebacks within lakes and these were consistent across both lakes. In particular, limnetics suffered greater burdens of the parasites Schistocephalus solidus and Diplostomum scudderi and benthics had much higher burdens of parasitic glochidia (mollusc larvae). Parasite burdens also differed quantitatively between lakes, but in general such differences were less pronounced than those between the stickleback species. The documented differences in parasite burdens between stickleback species have potential to contribute to divergent selection on life history, immunological and secondary sexual characters that could contribute to reproductive isolation between the species.  相似文献

Asthma has reached epidemic proportions globally. This has been attributed by many to improved hygiene. The frequent failure of conventional pharmaceuticals to manage the disease has led to the introduction of parasites as a potential alternative therapy for asthma and other immunological diseases. In this article, we briefly review the immunological rationale underpinning therapeutic parasitic infection, describe recently initiated trials, and highlight potential risks and benefits of introducing parasites into patient cohorts.  相似文献

The reproductive efficiency, defined as the number of breeding recruits produced per egg laid; of intraspecific nest parasites; of hosts in parasitized nests; and of unparasitized nesting females, was measured for 14 years for lesser snow geese Anser caerulescens caerulescens nesting near Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Relative efficiencies were 0.71–0.88, 0.91, and 1.0 for eggs of parasites, hosts, and unparasitized birds, respectively. Differences in the hatching probabilities of the three classes of eggs produced the efficiency differences. Parasitic success was limited by the parasites' failure to place more eggs than expected by chance into nests at the appropriate time relative to host incubation. Host nesting success was lower when more than one parasitic egg was added to the clutch. No differences in gosling survival and breeding recruitment probabilities were detected among any categories of goslings. Thus, hatching parasitic young are at no disadvantage relative to parental young, and there is no support for the hypothesis that increased success of host young at later stages of reproduction might offset negative effects at the egg stage. The hatching efficiency of parasitic eggs declined more rapidly than that of parental eggs as the parasitism rate increased. Efficiencies were similar when 3–4% of the eggs laid per year were parasitic, but relative parasitic efficiency was significantly lower when the parasitism rate was 8–9% or more. Using ancillary information and assumptions about the fecundity, viability, and behavioral flexibility of parasitic and parental females, we conclude that intraspecific nest parasitism could compete with nesting as a reproductive strategy in this population. The conditional use of parasitism by a large component of the population in certain years, however, combined with negative-frequency dependent success, limits the potential spread of a purely parasitic strategy in this population.  相似文献

Gender differences in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease have been observed both clinically and experimentally. These cardioprotective effects have frequently been attributed to female hormones, however, the underlying mechanisms responsible for this cardioprotection are still poorly understood. Accordingly, this study sought to determine the contribution of ovarian hormones to the prevention of adverse ventricular remodeling and congestive heart failure in chronic volume overload (i.e. aortocaval fistula in intact or ovariectomized female rats). Ovariectomized rats developed more extensive cardiac remodeling than intact females at 21 weeks post-fistula, characterized by significantly greater left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (167 vs. 86%, respectively, p < 0.05) and a substantial increase in LV dilatation (71%, p < 0.05) relative to control. In contrast to the eccentric hypertrophy in ovariectomized females post-fistula, the hypertrophic response in the intact female hearts was essentially concentric. While neither fistula group suffered significant mortality, there was a marked increase in the lung weight of ovariectomized rats (87%, p < 0.05) consistent with the development of pulmonary edema. Overall, the extent of myocardial remodeling and decrease in LV function in the ovariectomized females was comparable to those changes reported for males with symptomatic heart failure, while intact females maintained chronic compensated ventricular function similar to that of controls. The marked ventricular dilatation and symptoms of congestive heart failure seen at 21 weeks post-fistula in the ovariectomized females clearly demonstrate the influence of circulating ovarian hormones on the pattern of myocardial remodeling resulting from a chronic volume overload.  相似文献

Ecological causes of sex-biased parasitism in threespine stickleback   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Males and females can differ in levels of parasitism and such differences may be mediated by the costs of sexual selection or by ecological differences between the genders. In threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus , males exhibit paternal care and territorial nest defence and the costs of reproduction may be particularly high for males relative to females. We monitored levels of parasitism for 15 years in a population of stickleback infected by four different parasite species. Consistent with general predictions, overall parasite prevalence (total parasitism) was greater in males than in females. However, this excess did not occur for each species of parasite. Males had higher prevalence of a cestode Cyathocephalus truncatus and a trematode Bunodera sp. relative to females, while females had higher prevalence of a cestode Schistocephalus solidus and nematodes. This suggested ecological sources to differences in parasitism rather than reproductive costs and therefore we examined diet of unparasitized stickleback, predicting that differences in dietary niche would influence relative parasitism. This was partially confirmed and showed that female stomach contents had increased frequency of pelagic items, the major habitat for the primary host of S. solidus whereas males exhibited increased frequency of benthic items, the dominant habitat of C. truncatus and Bunodera. Temporal shifts in the extent and direction of differential parasitism among years between the sexes were associated with temporal shifts in dietary differences. Our results, combined with those in the literature, suggest that ecological differences between genders could be a more important component to patterns of parasitic infection in natural populations than currently appreciated.  相似文献

Trauma-hemorrhage leads to prolonged immune suppression, sepsis, and multiple organ failure. The condition affects all compartments of the immune system, and extensive studies have been carried out elucidating the immunological events following trauma-hemorrhage. The immune alteration observed following trauma-hemorrhage is gender dependent in both animal models and humans, though some studies in humans are contradictory. Within 30 min after trauma-hemorrhage, splenic and peritoneal macrophages, as well as T-cell function, are depressed in male animals, but not in proestrus females. Studies have also shown that the survival rate and the induction of subsequent sepsis following trauma-hemorrhage are significantly higher in males and ovariectomized females compared with proestrus females. These and other investigations show that sex hormones form the basis of this gender dichotomy, and administration of estrogen can ameliorate the immune depression and increase the survival rate after trauma-hemorrhage. This review specifically elaborates the studies carried out thus far demonstrating immunological alteration after trauma-hemorrhage and its modulation by estrogen. Also, estrogen was shown to produce its salutary effects through nuclear as well as extranuclear receptors. Estrogen rapidly activates several protein kinases and phosphatases, as well as the release of calcium in different cell types. The results of the studies exemplify the promise of estrogen as a therapeutic adjunct in treating adverse pathophysiological conditions following trauma-hemorrhage.  相似文献

We studied the population genetic structure of 360 and 1247 adult Schistosoma mansoni using seven microsatellite and seven random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, respectively. Parasites were collected from their natural definitive host Rattus rattus in Guadeloupe (West Indies). We found a sex-specific genetic structure, a pattern never before reported in a parasitic organism. Male genotypes were more randomly distributed among rats than female genotypes. This interpretation was consistent with a lower differentiation between hosts for males relative to females, the higher genetic similarity between females in the same host and the observed local (i.e. within-individual-host) differences in allele frequencies between the two sexes. We discuss our results using ecological and immunological perspectives on host-parasite relationships. These results change our view on the epidemiology of schistosomiasis, a serious disease affecting humans in African and American intertropical zones.  相似文献

Parasites have been proposed to be fundamental in the evolution of mate choice because differential mating on the basis of heritable disease resistance is expected to lead to progeny with a better genome-environment match than random mating. However, direct empirical data in support of this hypothesis are often lacking, and the relative influences of current and potential infection status (i.e. resistance genotype), and of mate choice versus mate conflict, remain largely unknown. We demonstrate experimentally, using simultaneous hermaphroditic snails (Biomphalaria glabrata) artificially selected for resistance or susceptibility to Schistosoma mansoni infection, that mate choice is influenced by a combination of current and potential parasitic infection status. As predicted by game-theory models, we also found a picture of conflict and cooperation: resistant and susceptible genotypes copulated in either gender and reciprocated (i.e. switched gender) equally when faced with an uninfected partner, but, by contrast, resistant snails actively refused to copulate as females with an infected partner. Such recognition and discrimination has implications for the maintenance of sex and the evolution of recognition systems.  相似文献
