The helcionelloid molluscs Oelandiella korobkovi O. sibirica Vostokova are redescribed on the basis of type material from the lowest Cambrian of northern Siberia. Oelandiella is reinstated as a recognizable genus separated from Latouchella Cobbold, of which it has been considered generally to be a junior synonym, by differences in the prominent comarginal plication. The bilaterally symmetrical shells of both of these genera are readily delimited from Oelandia Westergård, originally described from the Middle Cambrian of Sweden, which has a characteristic asymmetrical alternation of plicae.  相似文献

Lower Cambrian helcionelloid molluscs are described from the Pedroche Formation in Sierra de Córdoba, southern Spain. The molluscan fauna occurs together with abundant and diverse Small Shelly Fossils (SSF) in limestone units and limestone nodules within terrigenous units. The molluscs are assigned to three new genera and six new species. Three species are previously known from North Siberia and one occurs in Australia, Altai-Sayan Fold Belt, Siberia, Central Asia, China and eastern Germany. The molluscs and other Small Shelly Fossils indicate close palaeogeographic links to Siberia and other continental blocks during the Early Cambrian.  相似文献

The Early Cambrian helcionelloid mollusc Anabarella australis is described from North-East Greenland, representing the second occurrence of the species outside of Australia. Other Australian molluscs of this age are known from many localities including North China, Siberia, Altai, Transbaikalia, southern Kazakhstan, Mongolia, eastern Germany and Spain. These records, supported now by A. australis, demonstrate the close proximity of continents in the Early Cambrian.  相似文献

One of the oldest known helcionelloid molluscs, Anabarella Vostokova, is redescribed on the basis of type material from the lower Cambrian of north Siberia. Published records of the type species, Anabarella plana Vostokova, show a very wide range in morphology, but studies of variation through ontogeny and in taphonomy confirm assignment to a single variable species. Other described species are reviewed.  相似文献

Abundant specimens of Watsonella crosbyi are here documented for the first time from the Yanjiahe Formation in Three Gorges area, South China. Specimens were collected from siliceous-phosphatic, intraclastic limestones at the base of Bed 5 in the measured Yanjiahe section, indicating a Cambrian Stage 2 position for Bed 5. The widely used, regional Aldanella yanjiaheensis assemblage zone in Three Gorges area is revised herein as the Watsonella crosbyi zone, allowing for greater accuracy and utility when correlating on a global scale. The examination of microstructures of W. crosbyi further confirms that its shell consists of two layers: an outer prismatic layer and an inner lamello-fibrillar layer with a stepwise texture. A pair of muscle attachment sites below the apex provide new soft part information about Watsonella, confirming that Watsonella is an untorted helcionelloid (mollusc) with endogastrically coiled shell. The stratigraphic range of W. crosbyi in the Yanjiahe Formation correlates with the ranges of the taxon elsewhere in South China as well as in Siberia, Mongolia, Avalonia, Australia and France. Its nearly cosmopolitan distribution and its occurrence across a range of facies and palaeolatitudes reinforce the notion that the FAD of W. crosbyi represents the best candidate for defining the base of Cambrian Stage 2.  相似文献

Lamaureriella vizcainoi gen. et sp. nov., from the Montagne Noire region of southern France, is a coiled, laterally compressed, bilaterally symmetrical mollusc in which prominent folds in the apertural margin produce a characteristic spiral plication across each lateral surface. Similar plications are present in technophorid rostroconchs but the prominent coiling and lack of a pegma suggest that Lamaureriella is a helcionelloid. It is the second such genus described from Early Ordovician rocks.  相似文献

Three species ofOcruranus Liu, 1979 are described from the Bastion Formation of North-East Greenland, of late Early Cambrian (middle Dyeran of North American usage) age, representing the youngest record of a genus originally described from the earliest Cambrian Meishucunian Stage of China. An accompanying species, tentatively assigned toXianfengella He &Yang, 1982, seems also to be present in South Australia in strata of late Early Cambrian (Botoman of Siberian usage) age, although also this genus was described originally from the Meishucunian.Ocruranus andXianfengella from China have been interpreted as possibly parts of coeloscleritophoran scleritomes, perhaps halkieriids, rather than individual molluscan shells. Their shell form is not typical of helcionelloids which otherwise dominate the Early Cambrian molluscan record, but conclusive evidence of affinity is not forthcoming from the Greenland records. New taxa:Ocruranus septentrionalis n. sp. andOcruranus tunuensis n. sp.   相似文献

Zones with peculiar microornamentation interpreted as muscle scars were found on the internal molds of the Early Cambrian gastropod genus Bemella Missarzhevsky, 1969 (family Helcionellidae). Shell muscles of helcionellids are reconstructed based on the topographic pattern of muscle scars, i.e., the pedal, cephalic, and mantle retractors are recognized. The reconstruction proposed here of the shell musculature corroborates affinity between ancient gastropod and helcionelloid mollusks.  相似文献

Abstract:  The relationship of a variety of problematic Early Palaeozoic fossils to the true scaphopods (Late Palaeozoic–Recent) is clarified by the recognition that a trend towards the development of a tubular shell is a recurrent theme within Palaeozoic benthic molluscs. This trend is here termed scaphopodization and can be recognized already in the Cambrian in helcionelloids such as Yochelcionella and Eotebenna . The problematic Early Palaeozoic tubular fossils Janospira , Jinonicella and Rhytiodentalium are interpreted as pseudo-scaphopod derivatives of the apparently exogastric ribeirioid rostroconchs. The direction of coiling of the protoconch indicates that they are not closely related to the true scaphopods, which were derived from endogastric concocardioidean rostroconchs in the Devonian or Carboniferous. Scaphopods show a comparable underlying morphological blueprint to these conocardioideans, but they represent a distinct stream-lining to the infaunal habitat.

Berg-Madsen, Vivianne & Peel, John S. 1978 04 IS: Middle Cambrian monoplacophorans from Bornholm and Australia, and the systematic position of the bellerophontiform molluscs
Minute Middle Cambrian monoplacophorans originally reported from Australia are redescribed on the basis of material from the Kalby Clay of Bornholm. A recent classification of Bellerophon. Sinuites and related genera as monoplacophorans is discussed and rejected. Members of the group are returned to the Gastropoda on account of their similarity in ornament, musculature and inferred water circulation patterns, with contemporary fossil helically coiled gastropods. Water circulation patterns are deduced in Protowenella flemingi and support the assignment to the Monoplacophora. Kulhyella poulseni n.gen. n.sp. is described.  相似文献

The shell of marine gastropods conserves and reflects early ontogeny, including embryonic and larval stages, to a high degree when compared with other marine invertebrates. Planktotrophic larval development is indicated by a small embryonic shell (size is also related to systematic placement) with little yolk followed by a multiwhorled shell formed by a free‐swimming veliger larva. Basal gastropod clades (e.g. Vetigastropoda) lack planktotrophic larval development. The great majority of Late Palaeozoic and Mesozoic ‘derived’ marine gastropods (Neritimorpha, Caenogastropoda and Heterobranchia) with known protoconch had planktotrophic larval development. Dimensions of internal moulds of protoconchs suggest that planktotrophic larval development was largely absent in the Cambrian and evolved at the Cambrian–Ordovician transition, mainly due to increasing benthic predation. The evolution of planktotrophic larval development offered advantages and opportunities such as more effective dispersal, enhanced gene flow between populations and prevention of inbreeding. Early gastropod larval shells were openly coiled and weakly sculptured. During the Mid‐ and Late Palaeozoic, modern tightly coiled larval shells (commonly with strong sculpture) evolved due to increasing predation pressure in the plankton. The presence of numerous Late Palaeozoic and Triassic gastropod species with planktotrophic larval development suggests sufficient primary production although direct evidence for phytoplankton is scarce in this period. Contrary to previous suggestions, it seems unlikely that the end‐Permian mass extinction selected against species with planktotrophic larval development. The molluscan classes with highest species diversity (Gastropoda and Bivalvia) are those which may have planktotrophic larval development. Extremely high diversity in such groups as Caenogastropoda or eulamellibranch bivalves is the result of high phylogenetic activity and is associated with the presence of planktotrophic veliger larvae in many members of these groups, although causality has not been shown yet. A new gastropod species and genus, Anachronistella peterwagneri, is described from the Late Triassic Cassian Formation; it is the first known Triassic gastropod with an openly coiled larval shell.  相似文献

A phosphatized bilaterally symmetrical, spirally coiled conch from the Lower Cambrian phosphates of the Meishucunian Stage of eastern Yunnan, China, is composed of two well-preserved layers. The outer one is built of longitudinal mineralized fibres not strictly parallel to each other, but may anastomose or branch. The fibres form comarginal ribs with transversal grooves between them, corresponding to growth stages. In the ribs, the fibres are arranged closely and are steeply inclined towards the apex, while in the grooves the fibres are subparallel to the conch surface and more loosely packed. Small elliptic and triangular holes are situated within and between the fibres of the outer layer. The inner layer consists of transversal fibres running around the conch. They are almost parallel to each other but partly separated by narrow discontinuous slits. Despite overall morphological similarity of the conch to shells of some early Cambrian molluscs, the observed orthogonal configuration of longitudinally oriented fibrous structures of the outer layer and transversal fibres of the inner layer is found in orthothecid hyoliths, phosphatized microstuctures of which have been described from the Lower Cambrian of the Siberian Platform. The new material from the Yangtze Platform supports a conclusion of a distinctive type of microstructure available in hyoliths different from molluscan microstructures available from the Lower Cambrian.  相似文献

Runnegar, Bruce 1981 12 15: Muscle scars, shell form and torsion in Cambrian and Ordovician univalved molluscs. Lethaia, Vol. 14, pp. 311–322. Oslo. ISSN 0024–1164. Well preserved muscle scars have been discovered on one or more specimens of the early Palaeozoic univalved molluscs Pelagiella, Matherella, Sinuites and ?Bucania. From this information it is argued that the bellerophonts Sinuites and ?Bucania were untorted, that Pelagiella had undergone about 10° of torsion, and that Matherella may have been a fully torted, hyperstrophic descendant of Pelagiella. Other early gastropods such as Aldanella could have been independently derived from Pelagiella and therefore the Class Gastropoda may be at least diphyletic. In general, small dextrally coiled archaeogastropods such as Aldanella and the pelagiellids are the most common asymmetrical univalves of the Early Cambrian, but rare ultradextral (hyperstrophic) forms are also known. Only pelagiellids are known from the Middle Cambrian, and ultradextral forms dominate in the Late Cambrian. As a result, slit-bearing archaeogastropods are not common before the Ordovician. Yuwenia bentleyi gen. et sp. nov. is a new taxon proposed in this work. *Mollusca, Gastropoda, Monoplacophora, anatomy, evolution, Cambrian, Ordovician, Yuwenia n.g.  相似文献

Exceptionally well-preserved impressions of two bundles of bristles protrude from the apertures of small, spiral shells of Pelagiella exigua, recovered from the Kinzers Formation (Cambrian, Stage 4, ‘Olenellus Zone’, c. 512 Ma) of Pennsylvania. These impressions are inferred to represent clusters of chitinous chaetae, comparable to those borne by annelid parapodia and some larval brachiopods. They provide an affirmative test in the early metazoan fossil record of the inference, from phylogenetic analyses of living taxa, that chitinous chaetae are a shared early attribute of the Lophotrochozoa. Shells of Pelagiella exhibit logarithmic spiral growth, microstructural fabrics, distinctive external sculptures and muscle scars characteristic of molluscs. Hence, Pelagiella has been regarded as a stem mollusc, a helcionelloid expressing partial torsion, an untorted paragastropod, or a fully torted basal member of the gastropod crown group. The inference that its chaeta-bearing appendages were anterior–lateral, based on their probable functions, prompts a new reconstruction of the anatomy of Pelagiella, with a mainly anterior mantle cavity. Under this hypothesis, two lateral–dorsal grooves, uniquely preserved in Pelagiella atlantoides, are interpreted as sites of attachment for a long left ctenidium and a short one, anteriorly on the right. The orientation of Pelagiella and the asymmetry of its gills, comparable to features of several living vetigastropods, nominate it as the earliest fossil mollusc known to exhibit evidence of the developmental torsion characteristic of gastropods. This key adaptation facilitated an evolutionary radiation, slow at first and rapid during the Ordovician, that gave rise to the remarkable diversification of the Gastropoda.  相似文献

Abstract. Light and scanning electron microscopy were used to examine protoconch form in eight species of planktotrophic heterobranch larvae, including four nudibranch species with a coiled (type 1) protoconch, two nudibranch species with an inflated (type 2) protoconch, and two cephalaspid species with a coiled protoconch. The coiled protoconchs of the cephalaspids and nudibranchs have a similar form at hatching, and shell growth up to metamorphic competence is hyperstrophic. Shell added to coiled protoconchs during the larval stage overgrows all but the left wall of the initial protoconch that exists at hatching. The entire protoconch of cephalaspids, including overgrown areas, is retained through metamorphosis. However, during later larval development in nudibranchs with a coiled protoconch, overgrown shell is completely removed by dissolution. As a result, regardless of whether nudibranch larvae hatch with an inflated or coiled protoconch type, the protoconch is a large, hollow cup at metamorphic competence. The protoconch of nudibranchs is shed at metamorphosis and absence of a post-metamorphic shell is correlated with absence of visceral coiling in this gastropod group. Internal dissolution of the coiled protoconch in nudibranchs allows the left digestive gland to uncoil prior to metamorphic shell loss. Retention of overgrown protoconch whorls in cephalaspids allows the attachment plaque of the pedal muscle to migrate onto the parietal lip of the post-metamorphic shell. Release from this constraint in nudibranchs, in which the larval pedal muscles and the entire protoconch are lost at metamorphosis, may have permitted internal protoconch dissolution and precocious uncoiling of the visceral mass, as well as evolutionary emergence of the inflated larval shell type.  相似文献

Coiled bodies are nuclear organelles that contain components of at least three RNA-processing pathways: pre-mRNA splicing, histone mRNA 3'- maturation, and pre-rRNA processing. Their function remains unknown. However, it has been speculated that coiled bodies may be sites of splicing factor assembly and/or recycling, play a role in histone mRNA 3'-processing, or act as nuclear transport or sorting structures. To study the dynamics of coiled bodies in living cells, we have stably expressed a U2B"-green fluorescent protein fusion in tobacco BY-2 cells and in Arabidopsis plants. Time-lapse confocal microscopy has shown that coiled bodies are mobile organelles in plant cells. We have observed movements of coiled bodies in the nucleolus, in the nucleoplasm, and from the periphery of the nucleus into the nucleolus, which suggests a transport function for coiled bodies. Furthermore, we have observed coalescence of coiled bodies, which suggests a mechanism for the decrease in coiled body number during the cell cycle. Deletion analysis of the U2B" gene construct has shown that the first RNP-80 motif is sufficient for localization to the coiled body.  相似文献
