Brown tumor is one of the bone complications of hyperparathyroidism. Only a few cases are reported in the literature. We report a case of tertiary hyperparathyroidism following a chronic renal failure who presents multiple brown tumors. This case illustrates the potential usefulness of 99mTc-Sestamibi scan in the noninvasive diagnosis and treatment of hyperparathyroidism with brown tumors.  相似文献

The brown hare (Lepus europaeus) expanded its Swedish distribution since the 1980s northwards and locally to new areas within its former range. Of 115 brown hare populations within the former range reported in a hunter enquiry, those established after 1980 were situated higher above the sea level than older ones and higher than neighbouring (<50 km) older populations. Reports on increased use of forest habitats by brown hares were equally frequent among recent and older populations, suggesting a process promoted solely by less harsh winters. Supposed hare hybrids were more often reported from hunting grounds with recent brown hare establishment, i.e. where the species expands in time and in space. In a 27-year dataset on brown hare observations, the recent increased use of forest habitats was supported in that maximum distances to agricultural land for brown hare sightings were higher in mild winters, whereas the proportions of the annual observations made during winter were lower. In 40-year bag records from two Swedish counties, the dynamics of the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) responded positively to snow parameters, whereas brown hares responded negatively. We suggest that the state of mountain hare populations primarily depends on winter conditions and predation pressure, whereas possible effects of hybridization are unclear. If winter conditions remain as in the last 15 years, mountain hare numbers are not likely to increase in southern Sweden, whereas the brown hare may expand even further. In either case, hybrids will occur in sympatric areas in frequencies probably related to the density of the respective true species.  相似文献

In the native range of the brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) in Europe, the hybridization of native populations by nonnative domesticated strains introduced by stocking is one of the most serious threats to the long-term conservation of diversity within this species. With the objective of conserving and restoring the native gene pool, fishery managers are beginning to implement various management strategies at the local scale. Nevertheless, few case studies have been published that investigate the effectiveness of the various different conservation strategies for native brown trout populations. In the Chevenne Creek, a small French mountain stream, we tested the strategy of removing nonnative individuals by multiple electrofishing carried out by fishery managers in order to evaluate its feasibility and effectiveness for eliminating a nonnative population threatening a native population. Electrofishing produced major reductions in the nonnative population between 2006 and 2009, with 82–100% of nonnative individuals being removed over a period of 4 years. Nevertheless, despite multiple-electrofishing campaigns, this nonnative population was not entirely eradicated, and some natural recruitment persisted. The young of the year and subadults were less effectively removed than the adults. The results suggest that repeated electrofishing campaigns can be used by managers to reduce the nonnative brown trout population with the objective of conserving the native gene pool, but the removal operation must be continued for at least 4 consecutive years. This strategy, which is feasible in small streams, has to be followed by complementary operations to allow the restoration of a new, native, self-sustainable brown trout population.  相似文献

Hatchery‐reared brown trout Salmo trutta stocked in a natural stream in addition to resident wild brown trout grew more slowly than those stocked with an experimentally reduced density of brown wild trout. In both cases, hatchery‐reared brown trout grew more slowly than resident wild fish in control sections. Mortality and movements did not differ among the three categories of fish. The results showed that growth of stocked hatchery‐reared brown trout parr was density‐dependent, most likely as a consequence of increased competition. Thus, supplementary release of hatchery‐reared fish did not necessarily increase biomass.  相似文献

Populations of brown trout in the Mzymta River and its tributaries include anadromous (mainly female) and resident (mainly males) fish. Some resident males in the basin of the Mzymty River attain sexual maturity at the age 1+, and resident females mature at the age 2+ or 3+. The maximum age of resident fish is 4+ in the samples studied. Migrations of anadromous brown trout to the sea occur at the ages 1+, 2+, or 3+. Future spawners spend from 1 to 4 years at feeding grounds in the sea. Smolts of the population are characterized by performing not only spring but also autumn migrations to the sea. One smolt specimen has been detected upstream from the dam in the river where spawners of anadromous brown trout do not migrate; this means that the capability for sea migrations persists long in the population represented only by resident specimens of brown trout. The diversity of life cycles and ecological forms in populations of brown trout is not lower than in populations of brown trout in Northern and Western Europe. The comparison of the data obtained with published data makes it possible to come to the conclusion about the high plasticity of ontogenesis of Black Sea brown trout.  相似文献

Tyrosinase related protein‐1 (TRP‐1) is a melanocyte‐specific gene product involved in eumelanin synthesis. Mutation in the Tyrp1 gene is associated with brown pelage in mouse and oculocutaneous albinism Type 3 in humans (OCA3). It has been demonstrated that TRP‐1 expresses DHICA oxidase activity in the murine system. However, its actual function in the human system is still unclear. The study was designed to determine the effects of mutation at two Typr1 alleles, namely the Tyrp1b (brown) and Tyrp1b‐cj (cordovan) compared with wild type Tyrp1B (black) on melanocyte function and melanin biosynthesis. The most significant finding was that both of the Tyrp1 mutations (i.e. brown expressing a point mutation and cordovan expressing decreased amount of TRP‐1 protein) resulted in attenuation of cell proliferation rates. Neither necrosis nor apoptosis was responsible for the observed decrease in cell proliferation rates of the brown and cordovan melanocytes. Ultrastructural evaluation by electron microscopic analysis revealed that both mutations in Tyrp1 affected melanosome maturation without affecting its structure. These observations demonstrate that mutation in Tyrp1 compromised tyrosinase activity within the organelle. DOPA histochemistry revealed differences in melanosomal stages between black and brown melanocytes but not between black and cordovan melanocytes. There were no significant differences in tyrosine hydroxylase activities of tyrosinase and TRP‐1 in wild type black, brown and cordovan melanocyte cell lysates. We conclude that mutations in Tyrp1 compromise cell proliferation and melanosomal maturation in mouse melanocyte cultures.  相似文献

In species with large geographic ranges, genetic diversity of different populations may be well studied, but differences in loci and sample sizes can make the results of different studies difficult to compare. Yet, such comparisons are important for assessing the status of populations of conservation concern. We propose a simple approach of using a single well-studied reference population as a ‘yardstick'' to calibrate results of different studies to the same scale, enabling comparisons. We use a well-studied large carnivore, the brown bear (Ursus arctos), as a case study to demonstrate the approach. As a reference population, we genotyped 513 brown bears from Slovenia using 20 polymorphic microsatellite loci. We used this data set to calibrate and compare heterozygosity and allelic richness for 30 brown bear populations from 10 different studies across the global distribution of the species. The simplicity of the reference population approach makes it useful for other species, enabling comparisons of genetic diversity estimates between previously incompatible studies and improving our understanding of how genetic diversity is distributed throughout a species range.  相似文献

The brown midrib (bmr) mutants of sorghum have brown vascular tissue in the leaves and stem as a result of changes in lignin composition. The bmr mutants were generated via chemical mutagenesis with diethyl sulfate (DES) and resemble the brown midrib (bm) mutants of maize. The maize and sorghum brown midrib mutants are of particular value for the comparison of lignin biosynthesis across different, yet evolutionarily related, species. Although the sorghum brown midrib mutants were first described in 1978, none of the Brown midrib genes have been cloned. We have used a candidate-gene approach to clone the first Brown midrib gene from sorghum. Based on chemical analyses of the allelic mutants bmr12, bmr18 and bmr26, we hypothesized that these mutants had reduced activity of the lignin biosynthetic enzyme caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT). After a northern analysis revealed strongly reduced expression of the COMT gene, the gene was cloned from the mutants and the corresponding wild types using PCR. In all three mutants, point mutations resulting in premature stop codons were identified: bmr12, bmr18 and bmr26 are therefore mutant alleles of the gene encoding COMT. RT-PCR indicated that all three mutants express the mutant allele, but at much lower levels relative to the wild-type controls. Molecular markers were developed for each of the three mutant alleles to facilitate the use of these mutant alleles in genetic studies and breeding programs.  相似文献

There is a correlation between obesity and the amount of brown adipose tissue; however, the molecular mechanism of brown adipogenic differentiation has not been as extensively studied. In this study, we performed a protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) profiling analysis during the brown adipogenic differentiation of mouse primary brown preadipocytes. Several PTPs, including PTPRF, PTPRZ, and DUSP12 showing differential expression patterns were identified. In the case of DUSP12, the expression level is dramatically downregulated during brown adipogenesis. The ectopic expression of DUSP12 using a retroviral expression system induces the suppression of adipogenic differentiation, whereas a catalytic inactive DUSP12 mutant showed no effect on differentiation. These results suggest that DUSP12 is involved in brown adipogenic differentiation and may be used as a target protein for the treatment or prevention of obesity by the regulation of brown adipogenic differentiation. The gonadogenesis was studied in adult and juvenile females of Japanese mitten crab Eriocheir japonicus (Crustacea: Decapoda, Grapsida) inhabiting the rivers of the Maritime Territory. The morphometric parameters of oocytes at different stages of maturity were determined using the methods of computer morphometry and color characteristics were evaluated using the Munsell Book of Color. As a result, a color table was compiled for the ovaries from the beginning of development to gonad maturity, which included light yellow (sandy), yellow, beige, light purple, light brown, dark purple, brown (chocolate), and dark brown (brown). The regular changes in the ovary color of E. japonicus proved to closely correlate with the gonadogenesis, namely, with the composition of cells at each stage of gonad maturity.  相似文献

Only fragments are known about the functions of leaf litter patches in streams for terrestrial organisms. We investigated the movement patterns of Ezo brown frogs (Rana pirica) on two occasions, in autumn 2014 and summer 2015, and the occurrence of frogs in rivers and along riverbanks on three occasions from summer to autumn 2014 along a 1.5-km stream segment that flows through the Bekanbeushi wetland, northern Japan. Ezo brown frog movement was biased toward the river channel in late autumn and this movement pattern coincided with relatively abundant Ezo brown frogs on the riverbed from autumn to winter 2014. The distribution shift was also supported by decreasing abundance of Ezo brown frogs on riverbanks from autumn to winter (no sighting in winter) during daytime observations. The abundance of overwintering Ezo brown frogs in the channel was associated most positively with leaf litter dry mass and depth, with flow velocity being relatively less important at the quadrat scale (0.063 m2). Our results demonstrated that Ezo brown frogs overwinter in the stream and suggest that leaf litter patches positively affect the quality of the overwintering habitat.  相似文献

Brown adipocytes dissipate chemical energy in the form of heat through the expression of mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (Ucp1); Ucp1 expression is further upregulated by the stimulation of β‐adrenergic receptors in brown adipocytes. An increase in energy expenditure by activated brown adipocytes potentially contributes to the prevention of or therapeutics for obesity. The present study examined the effects of milk by‐products, buttermilk and butter oil, on brown adipogenesis and the function of brown adipocytes. The treatment with buttermilk modulated brown adipogenesis, depending on the product tested; during brown adipogenesis, buttermilk 1 inhibited the differentiation of HB2 brown preadipocytes. In contrast, buttermilk 3 and 5 increased the expression of Ucp1 in the absence of isoproterenol (Iso), a β‐adrenergic receptor agonist, suggesting the stimulation of brown adipogenesis. In addition, the Iso‐induced expression of Ucp1 was enhanced by buttermilk 2 and 3. The treatment with buttermilk did not affect the basal or induced expression of Ucp1 by Iso in HB2 brown adipocytes, except for buttermilk 5, which increased the basal expression of Ucp1. Conversely, butter oil did not significantly affect the expression of Ucp1, irrespective of the cell phase of HB2 cells, ie, treatment during brown adipogenesis or of brown adipocytes. The results of the present study indicate that buttermilk is a regulator of brown adipogenesis and suggest its usefulness as a potential food material for antiobesity.  相似文献

A number of evidence have been accumulated that the regulation of reversible tyrosine phosphorylation, which can be regulated by the combinatorial activity of protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) and protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), plays crucial roles in various biological processes including differentiation. There are a total of 107 PTP genes in the human genome, collectively referred to as the "PTPome." In this study, we performed PTP profiling analysis of the HIB-1B cell line, a brown preadipocyte cell line, during brown adipogenesis. Through RT-PCR and real-time PCR, several PTPs showing differential expression pattern during brown adipogenesis were identified. In the case of PTP-RE, it was shown to decrease significantly until 4 days after brown adipogenic differentiation, followed by a dramatic increase at 6 days. The overexpression of PTP-RE led to decreased brown adipogenic differentiation via reducing the tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor, indicating that PTP-RE functions as a negative regulator at the early stage of brown adipogenesis.  相似文献

Brown adipose tissue of small animals in the cold is able to increase several fold its mass and ability for non-shivering thermogenesis. Adrenergic agonists play a crucial role in the stimulation of the tissue hyperplasia and thermoregulation. In this work, a comparative study of the Ca2+ signaling in mouse and ground squirrel brown preadipocytes was carried out. The goal of this study was to elucidate what features of the Ca2+ signaling in ground squirrel preadipocytes allow the hibernators to control brown fat hyperplasia in the absence of cold stress. This knowledge would enable us to find ways to control human body mass and to treat diabetes mellitus type two. Low concentrations (0.3–3 μM for mouse cells and 1–10 μM for ground squirrel cells) of the selective α1- and β-adrenergic agonists cirazoline and isoproterenol, respectively, induced slow Ca2+ responses with linear kinetics in brown preadipocytes of both species. High concentrations of the agonists (10–500 μM) caused Ca2+ responses with exponential kinetics in ground squirrel brown preadipocytes and suppressed the responses in mouse preadipocytes. Dose-response curves for the agonists were bell-shaped for both mouse and ground squirrel preadipocytes. It should be noted that in preadipocytes of both species β-adrenergic agonist induced stronger responses than α1-adrenergic agonist did. On the other hand, the responses evoked in ground squirrel brown preadipocytes by both agonists were two orders of magnitude stronger than the responses in mouse preadipocytes. Treatment of the cells with forskolin demonstrated that brown preadipocytes of a ground squirrel had a strong positive feedback in Ca2+ signaling, whereas mouse preadipocytes had a negative feedback. The difference found in the preadipocyte Ca2+ signaling may explain the different strategies employed in the two species for the regulation of their body fat mass and survival in the cold.  相似文献

The phycoerythrin-deficient strain (green phenotype) of Hypnea musciformis (Rhodophyta) originated from a green branch, which had arisen as a spontaneous mutation in a wild plant (brown phenotype) collected from the Brazilian coast. The present study describes the growth responses to irradiance, photoperiod and temperature variations, pigment contents, and photosynthetic characteristics of the brown and green strains of H. musciformis. The results showed that growth rates increased as a function of irradiance (up to 40 μmol photons m−2 s−1) but, with further increase in irradiance (from 40 to 120 μmol photons m−2 s−1), became light-saturated and remained almost unchanged. The highest growth rates of the brown and green strains were observed in temperatures of 20–25°C under long (14:10 h LD) and short (10:14 h LD) photoperiods. The brown strain had higher growth rates than the green strain in the short photoperiod, which could be related to the high concentrations of phycobiliproteins. Phycoerythrin was not detected in the green strain. The brown strain had higher concentrations of allophycocyanin and phycoerythrin in the short photoperiod while the green strain had higher concentrations of phycocyanin. The brown strain presented higher photosynthetic efficiency (α), and lower saturation parameter (Ik) and compensation irradiance (Ic) than the green strain. The brown strain exhibited the characteristics of shade-adapted plants, and its higher value of photosynthetic efficiency could be attributed to the higher phycoerythrin concentrations. Results of the present study indicate that both colour strains of H. musciformis could be selected for aquaculture, since growth rates were similar (although in different optimal light conditions), as the green strain seems to be adapted to higher light levels than the brown strain. Furthermore, these colour strains could be a useful experimental system to understand the regulation of biochemical processes of photosynthesis and metabolism of light-harvesting pigments in red algae.  相似文献

The within- and among-population variation in individual growth rate of brown trout Salmo trutta L. was studied in five small neighbouring streams (seven isolated populations) within a distance of 70 km in east Norway. Observed growth rate was only weakly correlated with predicted maximum growth rate based on laboratory models, and there was a significant interaction with site. A generalized linear model showed that growth rate was positively correlated with temperature, but also that growth rate decreased as the summer season progressed. This might indicate either a seasonal decline in food availability or appetite, or a change in energy allocation strategy. Growth rate decreased with increasing fish age, probably as an effect of sexual maturation of older fish, and differential allocation of protein and lipid among different size-groups of brown trout. After adjusting for variation in temperature, season, and fish mass, there was still significant among-site variation in growth rate. A significant part of this variation was due to variation in brown trout density and the presence or absence of Alpine bullhead Cottus poecilopus . Growth rate decreased with increasing brown trout density, and was lower in the presence than in the absence of Alpine bullhead after correcting for variation in brown trout density. This last result may indicate the presence of interspecific competition.  相似文献

X‐ray micro‐computed tomography scans were used to examine the caudal‐fin structure of an unusual double‐tailed deformity in an adult brown surgeonfish Acanthurus nigrofuscus from the Great Barrier Reef. In both this case and in a similar double‐tailed deformity in a juvenile Tomini surgeonfish Ctenochaetus tominiensis from the Philippines, the caudal fin was duplicated along the dorsoventral axis. Detailed examination of the A. nigrofuscus specimen revealed that the deformity was associated with duplication and reflection of the hypural plates and the posterior vertebrae, yet the fish survived to adulthood, indicating that the effects of duplication on survival may be limited.  相似文献

A previous study showed that little brown skinks, Scincella lateralis, from a population in Louisiana, USA were poor at learning to escape to a specific retreat in a series of laboratory trials. The study was repeated on little brown skinks from a population in Oklahoma (650 km from the Louisiana population). The Oklahoma lizards were significantly better at learning to escape to a specific retreat than their Louisiana counterparts. This result demonstrates that geographic variation in the ability to learn an escape behavior exists in this species.  相似文献

The role of enzyme amylase in two germinating seed morphs, i.e. black and brown, of Halopyrum mucronatum in saline and non-saline environment was examined. Both seed morphs of this halophytic grass have variations in their moisture content, total lipid, protein, sugar, phenol and tannin contents. Black seed exhibited higher activity compared to brown in saline medium. Sugar mobilization in both seed morphs was also affected due to the difference in amylase activity. However, exogenous application of GA3 in saline medium enhanced the amylase activity and sugar mobilization. Phenolic contents were similar except for vanillic acid which was found only in brown seeds while catechol was present only in black seeds. Phenols extracted from both seed morphs were applied to determine their effects on amylase activity. Phenolic extracts obtained from brown seeds showed higher degree of inhibition of amylase activity. Results are discussed in relation to seed coat phenols, leaching, amylase activity and sugar mobilization.  相似文献
