Physiology studies the functions of different organs, systems and how they maintain the integrity of organisms. Nervous and endocrine systems react to stimulus, causality plays a key role in their activities. Physical and chemical conditions of fluids in the internal environment serve as a background and an active modulator for regulatory influences. Autacoid formation is in many respects based on probable events. It has been proved, that during the formation of regulatory systems in cell evolution the appearance of regulatory molecules was based on statistical probability of quantum events: sporadical appearance in cells during metabolism of peptides, lipids, hydrolysis of larger molecules on fragments, quanta, which received physiological activity in the form of function regulators. These processes in their adapted, according to Darwin's mechanism of natural selection, value were recorded into the genome since synthesis readings of the polypeptides were fixed. The formation of multicellular organisms was promoted by the arise of regulatory systems and their integration under the supervision of the nervous system. 相似文献

- The future of the seed is partly predetermined by events (flower formation, flowering, nutrient flow from mother plant, etc.) preceding fertilization and the formation of the gametophyte.
- The environmental conditions under which the seed matures affect its final physiological constitution. This faet has mostly been neglected by seed physiologists.
- It is not known how far the triantic nature of the diaspore (seed coat, pulp, etc., 2n of mother plant, embryon of δ +n of Φ, endosperm 2n of Φ +n of δ) affects seed development and germination.
- The integuments of the ovules of some species have stomata. It is not known if they are functional in gas exchange or are constitutional non-functioning relics.
- The causes of the growth-degeneration pattern of the nucellus are unknown.
- During the development of the megaspore mother cell into the mature embryo sac dramatic cellular ultrastructural changes take place. This probably signifies a “change of guards” during which the gametophyte is freed from part of the controls by the ultrastructural units of the mother plant, preparing the ground after fertilization for a new, genetically independent sporophyte.
- Upon closer examination, the seemingly simple processes of fertilization and embryogenesis, as described in textbooks, turn out to be very complex and full of problems. Is the role each male nucleus plays preordained or is it left to chance which male nucleus goes where? What causes the degeneration of the synergids and of the vegetative nucleus, and what protects the other two male nuclei from a similar fate? Which ultrastructural organelles are carried by the generative nuclei into their respective receptor cells and what is their role in them? Why do zygotes in some species develop after fertilization immediately into an embryo whereas in other species the zygote remains dormant for some time? What causes the polarity of the egg cell which, after fertilization, divides into one developmentally most active apical cell (giving rise to the embryo) and into another “lazy” basal cell which develops into the suspensor of “unknown function?”
- In the source-sink relationship between photosynthesizing organs and the maturing seed there is one point at which the photosynthates pass from symplast to apoplast to symplast. The mechanism involved is largely unknown as well as the effect which environmental conditions have on this transport.

Young birds and mammals are extremely vulnerable to predators and so should benefit from responding to parental alarm calls warning of danger. However, young often respond differently from adults. This difference may reflect: (i) an imperfect stage in the gradual development of adult behaviour or (ii) an adaptation to different vulnerability. Altricial birds provide an excellent model to test for adaptive changes with age in response to alarm calls, because fledglings are vulnerable to a different range of predators than nestlings. For example, a flying hawk is irrelevant to a nestling in a enclosed nest, but is dangerous to that individual once it has left the nest, so we predict that young develop a response to aerial alarm calls to coincide with fledging. Supporting our prediction, recently fledged white-browed scrubwrens, Sericornis frontalis, fell silent immediately after playback of their parents' aerial alarm call, whereas nestlings continued to calling despite hearing the playback. Young scrubwrens are therefore exquisitely adapted to the changing risks faced during development. 相似文献

Information theoretical approaches to sensory processing in electric fish have focused on the encoding of amplitude modulations in a single sensory pathway in the South American gymnotiforms. To assess the generality of these studies, we investigated the encoding of amplitude and phase modulations in the distantly related African fish Gymnarchus. In both the amplitude- and time-coding pathways, primary afferents accurately estimated the time course of random modulations whereas hindbrain neurons extracted information about specific stimulus features. Despite exhibiting a clear preference for encoding amplitude or phase, afferents and hindbrain neurons could encode significant amounts of modulation of their nonpreferred attribute. Although no increase in feature extraction performance occurred where the two pathways converge in the midbrain, neurons there were increasingly sensitive to simultaneous modulation of both attributes. A shift from accurate stimulus estimation in the periphery to increasingly sparse representations of specific features appears to be a general strategy in electrosensory processing. 相似文献

A inositide-dependent signaling exists in the nucleus. In this review we focused to the nuclear PI-PLC signaling activity, its downstream effects and its role in haematological malignancies. PI-PLC β1 is involved in the physiological control of the cell cycle and by acting on the Cylin D3 promoter plays a crucial role in the process of C2C12 myoblast differentiation. In hematological malignancies recent studies showed that PI-PLC β1 mono-allelic deletion correlates with a higher risk of AML evolution. Moreover it has been shown that PI-PLC β1 promoter is hypermethylated in high-risk MDS patients and that the amount of PI-PLC β1 mRNA could predict the clinical response to azacitidine, a well known demethylating drug. All in all the data reviewed here pave the way to a new prognostic and therapeutic strategy in some haematological malignancies. 相似文献

The burying beetle, Nicrophorus orbicollis, is the first beetle exhibiting parental care for which endocrinological studies have been initiated. Burying beetles bury and prepare small vertebrate carcasses as a breeding resource for their offspring. After emergence as an adult, hemolymph titers of juvenile hormone and ovarian size increase in concert for 2–3 weeks, and both plateau until an appropriate resource is discovered. Upon finding a suitable carcass, titers of juvenile hormone increase extremely rapidly (<20 min), and within 18 h ovarian mass increases threefold and oviposition begins. This rapid reproductive development is hypothesized to be selected by the intense competition for these protein-rich but quickly deteriorating resources. Burying beetle females exhibit an additional juvenile hormone surge at the time young hatch. This peak in juvenile hormone is hypothesized to be associated with either the considerable behavioral demands which accompany care of young larvae or with a female's willingness to oviposit a replacement clutch should brood failure occur early in the care-giving phase. Parental care has evolved in at least 16 additional families within the Coleoptera. Comparative studies of nonparental and parental groups will be important for understanding how the physiology of ancestral groups affects the evolution of complex social behavior. Arch. In the past year, candidates have been identified for two long-sought classes of molecules, insect odorant receptors and mammalian taste receptors. In addition, genes directing receptor gene expression and the development of specific chemosensory neurons have been described in Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. Finally, recent physiological experiments have provided new insights into the mechanisms by which chemosensory information is processed. 相似文献

As it focuses on the integrated behavior of the entire cell, systems biology is a powerful extension of growth physiology. Here, I briefly trace some of the origins of modern-day bacterial growth physiology and its relevance to systems biology. I describe how growth physiology emerged from the foggy picture of the growth curve as a self-contained entity. For this insight, we can thank Henrici, Hershey, Monod, Maal?e, and others. As a result of their work, growth rate is understood to be the unitary manifestation of the response to nutritional conditions and to the control condition for studies on the effect of environmental stresses. For this response to be usefully reproducible, cultures must be in the steady state known as balanced growth. I point out that present-day experimenters are not always aware of this imperative and thus do not always use conditions that ensure the balanced growth of their control cultures. 相似文献

Blood lymphocytes of 15 healthy donors have been investigated for their ability to reduce radiosensitivity after low-dose irradiation-radio-induced adaptive response (AR). The frequency of unstable chromosome aberrations was used to evaluate cell radiosensitivity after the irradiation of cells in low adaptive (5 cGy) and high challenge (1 Gy) doses in comparison with the effect of challenge irradiation only. Three indexes have been used, i.e., (A) the frequency of cells with aberrations per total analyzed cell, (B) the number of chromosome aberrations per one cell, (C) and the number of chromosome aberrations per one aberrant cell. It was found that the donors can be divided in the four following groups: 1. AR was not estimated any of the indexes used; 2. AR was estimated with indexes A and B, but not C; 3. AR was shown by indexes B and C; 4. AR was evident with all three indexes. The generally accepted AR repair model only explains the appearance of group-3 and-4 donors, but not group-2. For the purpose of understanding the AR mechanisms and the difference in AR estimations with various criteria, the metaphase distribution by the number of chromosome aberrations has been analyzed for each donor. It was shown that, in group-2 donors, the number of cells without aberrations after adaptive and challenge irradiations was significantly higher than after irradiation with a challenge dose only. Thus, in this group, AR is formed as a result of the changed frequency of cells in the 0 class (population shift). A similar shift is observed in the metaphase distribution in the donors of group 4, but not in group 3. The data obtained show that AR is probably a result of several processes, including the activation of the reparation of premutational genome damages, population shifts evident in the frequency of undamaged cells, and, possibly, the activation of apoptotic cell death. The complex character of AR is reflected to different degrees in each criterion of radiosensitivity. 相似文献

New insight into how the brain makes a decision has come from a study of the effects of the decision-making process on an eye movement evoked by electrical stimulation of the frontal cortex. The accumulation of sensory evidence was found to cause a gradual commitment toward a choice. 相似文献
