The relationship between monobacterial films and the preference of harpacticoid copepods for such films was investigated using still water multiple-choice assays with natural biofilm and sterile conditions as controls. Adult Schizopera sp. were most attracted by a heterogeneous natural biofilm, followed by monospecies-biofilms of Rhodovulum sp., Vibrio proteolyticus, and Flexibacter sp. The preferred bacterial films stemmed from different phylogenetic and physiological groups. The results indicated that the harpacticoid Schizopera sp. was effectively and differentially attracted by bacterial films. Since bacteria constitute a substantial portion of the organic carbon available at the sea bottom as nutritive sources for harpacticoid copepods, we subsequently examined the influence of 9 bacterial strains and a natural biofilm as a nutrient source on the growth and reproductive performance of ontogenetic stages (nauplii and copepodids) of Schizopera sp. The food value of bacterial strains was assayed in terms of life table data that provided growth parameters. All variables were affected by the type of food offered. A diet on Rhodovulum sp. resulted in optimal growth performance of nauplii and copepodids demonstrating that bacteria can be used as a sole diet to support postembryonic development. The present study is the first to link behavioral preferences to bacterial biofilms with life history parameters when cultivating harpacticoid copepods on the same bacterial strains as the only diet. This study revealed a discrepancy between the biofilm favored (natural biofilm) and the one leading to maximal reproductive performance (monobacterial film of Rhodovulum sp. MB253) as indicated by major life table data as net reproductive rate (Ro), mean generation time (Tm), and capacity for increase (rc).  相似文献

明确底栖动物在时空尺度上的自然变化规律对有效评估和保护水生态系统十分重要。基于2012年季节调查数据,对新薛河典型生境底栖动物群落季节动态进行了研究。共鉴定底栖动物108种,隶属5门10纲74属。短脉纹石蛾、长钝直突摇蚊、拟长跗摇蚊、Neozarelia sp.为研究区域优势分类单元,相对丰度分别为25.1%、9.8%、9.0%、8.6%;各季节间优势分类单元组成差异较大,3个季度共同优势物种仅短脉纹石蛾1种。密度、物种丰度、香农指数表现为4月和12月显著高于10月;均匀度指数10月份最高。非度量多维标度排序表明,不同季节底栖动物群落结构差异显著;对照河段(D河段)群落结构季节间差异相对较小。指示物种法分离出了新薛河及各河段代表性物种41种,但B河段未分离出指示物种;双向聚类分析进一步明确了指示物种的指示属性(特有或者相对丰度最高)。  相似文献

The investigation of the zooplankton community in the upstream part of Stratos reservoir during a 24 months survey (September 2004–August 2006) revealed 26 invertebrate species (14 rotifers, 6 cladocerans, 5 copepods and one mollusk larva). The mean abundance of the total zooplankton was higher in the first sampling period (2004–2005) and ranged between 8.81 and 47.74 ind. L−1, than the second period (2005–2006) when fluctuated between 1.91 and 43.09 ind. L−1. The seasonal variation was strongly influenced by the presence of rotifers, which accounting on average for 68.4% in total. Among them Keratella cochlearis and the order Bdelloidea were numerically the most important, while Macrocyclops albidus prevailed among the copepods and Bosmina longirostris among the cladocerans. Dreissena polymorpha was the only mollusk found in the zooplankton community. Rotifers, copepods and cladocerans showed a seasonal succession with the former preceding in the abundance having their first maximum in spring, while copepods and cladocerans followed, having peaks of abundance in early summer and in autumn, respectively. No seasonal succession among the cladoceran species was observed. The intense water flow in the upstream part of the reservoir, as well as temperature, conductivity, DO, pH, phosphates and silicates, were significant parameters controlling abiotic and biotic elements of the ecosystem and consequently influencing the seasonal variation and the dynamics of the zooplankton community.  相似文献

Pseudopalaemon bouvieri undergoes complete abbreviated development. The reproductive cycle (proportion and size of the sexually mature population and juvenile recruitment), fecundity and egg size of this prawn were examined in three subtropical shallow lakes. The reproductive cycle was seasonal; gonadal maturation occurred during the winter, ovigerous females were abundant in the spring and breeding occurred at the end of spring. Females produced small numbers of eggs (9–55) of relatively large sizes (1.0–2.1 mm). The proportion of ovigerous females with respect to the total number of females, the fecundity and egg size differed among the lakes according to the trophic state of the environments. Pseudopalaemon bouvieri has a reproductive strategy similar to other Palaemonidae species that inhabit nutrient-poor inland waters.  相似文献

The abundance and vertical distribution of micro-metazoans sampledwith fine nets of 0.05 mm mesh size were studied at three stationsin the Arabian Sea during the intermonsoon period (April/May1987) and down to 1850 m depth. In the epipelagic zone (0–100m). values of biomass and metazoan abundance tended to be higherthan those reported for other tropical oceanic areas. In themesopelagic zone, which is characterized by an extreme oxygendeficiency between 100 and 1000 m depth, the abundance of metazoantaxa and species numbers of non-calanoid copepods were largelyreduced. However, intermediate abundance maxima occurred withinthis zone, which were dominated by specific metazoan taxa (copepods.appendicularians) and species of non-calanoids (Oncaea sp. C).In the bathypelagic zone below 1050 m, the species diversityof the dominant copepod family Oncaeidae increased substantially.Two-thirds of a total of 69 oncaeid species recovered were confinedto this layer. As most of them were small in size and occurredin low abundance only, the increase in total oncaeid densityand/or plankton biomass was less conspicuous. Dominant Oncaeaspecies in the bathypelagic zone were O.longipes and O.brodskii.The results are compared with published data from the ArabianSea and other tropical oceanic areas with and without an extrememesopelagic oxygen minimum zone Possible causes of the intermediateabundance maxima within the oxygen deficiency zone are discussed.  相似文献

Egg predation is a major cause of reproductive failure among birds, and can compromise the viability of affected populations. Some egg predators aggregate near colonially breeding birds to exploit the seasonal increase of prey resources. We investigated spatial and temporal variations in the abundance of an egg predator (little raven Corvus mellori; Corvidae) to identify whether ravens aggregate spatially or temporally to coincide with any of three potential prey species: burrow‐nesting little penguin (Eudyptula minor; Spheniscidae), short‐tailed shearwater (Ardenna tenuirostris; Procellariidae), and surface‐nesting silver gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae; Laridae). We derived spatially explicit density estimates of little ravens using distance sampling along line transects throughout a calendar year, which encompassed little penguin, short‐tailed shearwater and silver gull breeding and non‐breeding seasons. High raven abundance coincided temporally with penguin and gull egg laying periods but not with that of shearwaters. The spatial distribution of raven density corresponded with the little penguin colony but not with shearwater or gull colonies. Thus, the presence of little penguin eggs in burrows correlated strongly with little raven activity, and this implies that little ravens may have learnt to exploit the plentiful subsurface food resource of little penguin eggs. Corvid management may be required to maintain the viability of this socially and economically important penguin colony.  相似文献

Kelp forests are highly productive and species‐rich benthic ecosystems in temperate regions that provide biogenic habitat for numerous associated species. Diverse epifaunal communities inhabit kelp sporophytes and are subject to variations in the physical environment and to changes experienced by the kelp habitat itself. We assessed seasonal variations in epifaunal invertebrate communities inhabiting giant kelps, Macrocystis pyrifera, and their effects on this seaweed. Six seasonal samplings were conducted over a year at an upwelling‐dominated site in northern‐central Chile where physical conditions are known to fluctuate temporally. More than 30 taxa were identified, among which peracarid crustaceans stood out in both diversity and abundance. Species richness and abundance differed among sporophyte sections (holdfast and fronds) and throughout the year. The frond community was dominated by two grazers (the amphipod Peramphithoe femorata and the isopod Amphoroidea typa), while suspension feeders, grazers, and omnivores (the amphipod Aora typica, the isopod Limnoria quadripunctata, and polychaetes) dominated the holdfasts. Abundances of the dominant species fluctuated throughout the year but patterns of variation differed among species. The most abundant grazer (P. femorata) had highest densities in summer, while the less abundant grazer (A. typa) reached its peak densities in winter. Interestingly, the area of kelp damaged by grazers was highest in autumn and early winter, suggesting that grazing impacts accumulate during periods of low kelp growth, which can thus be considered as ‘vestiges of herbivory past.’ Among the factors determining the observed seasonal patterns, strong variability of environmental conditions, reproductive cycles of associated fauna, and predation by fishes vary in importance. Our results suggest that during spring and early summer, bottom‐up processes shape the community structure of organisms inhabiting large perennial seaweeds, whereas during late summer and autumn, top‐down processes are more important.  相似文献

Between March 2000 and April 2001, 63 specimens of N. barba from Angra dos Reis, coastal zone of the State of Rio de Janeiro (23 degrees 0' S, 44 degrees 19' W), Brazil, were necropsied to study their infracommunities of metazoan parasites. Fifteen species of metazoan parasites were collected: 2 digeneans, 1 monogenean, 2 cestodes, 1 acantocephalan, 2 nematodes, 6 copepods, and 1 hirudinean. Ninety-six percent of the catfishes were parasitized by at least one metazoan parasite species. A total of 646 individual parasites was collected, with mean of 10.3 +/- 16.6 parasites/fish. The copepods were 37.5% of the total parasite specimens collected. Lepeophtheirus monacanthus was the most dominant species and the only species with abundance positively correlated with the host total length. Host sex did not influence parasite prevalence or mean abundance of any species. The mean diversity in the infracommunities of N. barba was H = 0.130 +/- 0.115 with no correlation with host's total length and without differences in relation to sex of the host. One pair of endoparasites (Dinosoma clupeola and Pseudoacanthostomum floridensis) showed positive association and covariation between their abundances and prevalences. The parasite community of N. barba from Rio de Janeiro can be defined as a complex of species with low prevalence and abundance and with scarcity of interspecific associations. However, because of both the presence of assemblages of sympatric ariid species as well as the spawning behavior characteristic of these fishes, additional comparative studies of the parasite component communities of ariids are necessaries to elucidate this pattern.  相似文献

This study analysed seasonal dynamics of macrophyte abundance in two perennial lowland regulated streams (Stream 1 and 2) in the Danube basin (Slovakia). Assessments of macrophyte abundance and environmental characteristics were accomplished 7 times during the vegetation period in 2005 within a 100 m long section. Statistically significant differences in total abundance of macrophytes as well as an abundance of macrophyte groups (hydrophytes, amphiphytes, helophytes) and Potamogeton nodosus were detected among months within the vegetation period. Abundance fluctuations for individual macrophyte groups and species were moderate in Stream 1 and much stronger in Stream 2. Only amphiphytes showed bimodal temporal distribution in Stream 1, but the abundance of this group was low, reflecting more or less random occurrence of species in vegetation period. Multiple linear regression revealed that water depths and air temperature are the most significant environmental variables affecting the seasonal pattern of total as well as dominating group abundance in Stream 1 and 2, respectively. In all cases, abundances are significantly influenced by the abundance of the respective group in the preceding month. Culmination time differed between streams for all macrophyte groups except helophytes. Total abundance culminated 0.57 month later in the Stream 1 compared to Stream 2.  相似文献

Our understanding of fish feeding interactions at Tijuana Estuary was improved by incorporating estimates of spatial and temporal variability into diet analyses. We examined the stomach contents of 7 dominant species (n=579 total fish) collected between 1994 and 1999. General feeding patterns pooled over time produced a basic food web consisting of 3 major trophic levels: (1) primary consumers (Atherinops affinis, Mugil cephalus) that ingested substantial amounts of plant material and detritus; (2) benthic carnivores (Clevelandia ios, Hypsopsetta guttulata, Gillichthys mirabilis, and Fundulus parvipinnis) that ingested high numbers of calanoid copepods and exotic amphipods (Grandidierella japonica); and (3) piscivores (Paralichthys californicus and Leptocottus armatus) that often preyed on smaller gobiids. Similarity-based groupings of individual species' diets were identified using nonmetric multidimensional scaling to characterize their variability within and between species, and in space and time. This allowed us identify major dietary shifts and recognize events (i.e., modified prey abundance during 1997–98 El Ni no floods) that likely caused these shifts.  相似文献

Synopsis We sampled the littoral-zone fish fauna of Lake Texoma reservoir by electrofishing from January through December 1986 to examine species abundance, species associations and assemblage structure. Although total fish abundance differed significantly across seasons, only one common species (Dorosoma cepedianum) exhibited significant seasonal movement into or out of the littoral zone. Overall littoral-zone assemblage structure (based on rank order of species abundance) was concordant across seasons and habitat types, (vegetation, wood, open). However, within individual seasons and habitat types, assemblage structure was likely influenced by temporal and spatial differences in habitat availability and physicochemical conditions. Associations characteristic of species in natural aquatic environments were not well developed among species in this partly artificial, evolutionarily short-lived reservoir assemblage. Conditions related to water-level fluctuation appeared to deter the formation of persistent species associations and assemblage structure, especially in vegetation and open littoral zone habitats of this multi-purpose reservoir.Senior author  相似文献

Recently, climate change research has emphasized the potential increase in the frequency and severity of climatic extremes. We compared the reproductive effort and output among four species of passerine birds in coastal southern California, USA, a semi-arid region, during a normal precipitation year (2001) and the driest year in a 150-year climate record (2002). Both reproductive effort and output differed dramatically between years. Mean reproductive output among the four species was 2.37 fledglings/pair in 2001 and 88.4% of all pairs observed attempted at least one nest. The birds attempted a mean of 1.44 nests per pair and were successful in 47.7% of those attempts. In 2002, only 6.7% of the pairs even attempted a nest and only 1.8% were successful, for a total output of 0.07 fledglings per pair. The abundance of suitable arthropod prey items in the environment was also much lower in 2002, suggesting that low food availability was the proximal cause of the reproductive failure. The data for one of these species, the rufous-crowned sparrow (Aimophila ruficeps), were combined with reproductive and rainfall data from a previous 3-year study (1997–1999) in the same sites. The combined data sets suggest that the response of reproduction to rainfall variation is linear, and that the low end of the precipitation range brings the population near reproductive failure. Any change in climate that would increase the frequency of extreme dry conditions would likely endanger populations of these species.  相似文献

Summary The zooplankton community of a shallow coastal area in Eastern Antarctica was found to be one of low species diversity dominated by Copepoda. It was comprised of the more common Antarctic oceanic copepod species, medusae, molluscs, euphausiids, several copepod species associated with the ice-water interface and, in summer, benthic fauna larvae. Most species of copepods displayed a marked seasonality in abundance with peak numbers between March and May. It is proposed that several factors, including phytoplankton seasonality contribute to the zooplankton species composition, zooplankton seasonality, and to the temporal differences in the period of maximum abundance between copepod species. Annual vertical migratory behaviour in conjunction with the circulation of Prydz Bay are important determining factors for those species which can be considered as oceanic; Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus, Ctenocalanus citer, Metridia gerlachei, Oithona similis and Oncaea curvata. However, for copepod species which can be classified as inshore residents, such as Stephos longipes, Paralabidocera antarctica and Drepanopus bispinosus, it is their association with the ice water interface that determines their seasonal appearance and abundance. Some differences were established between the zooplankton community of the Vestfold Hills and that of other Antarctic coastal regions. This may be attributed, in part, to the extensive shallow areas of the Vestfold Hills coastal region. Spatial distribution of the zooplankton with depth and between sites was investigated and found to be essentially homogenous. When differences were established, in the majority of cases all species present, all age classes and both sexes contributed to the differences.  相似文献

Summary

Studies over the last 15 years have revealed that deep-sea benthic megainvertebrates show a variety of reproductive patterns that are adapted to the deep-sea, an environment in which the fauna occurs at low densities and resources are sparse. In the NE Atlantic the majority of species reproduce year round whilst a limited number of species reproduce on a seasonal basis believed to be entrained by the deposition of surface derived organic material on the deep-sea bed. A third pattern of rapid growth and early reproduction is found in a limited number of species that utilize unpredictable and ephemeral resources in the deep sea. Examination of the fertilization and behavioural biology of species from the bathyal depths suggest some species enhance fertilization success by forming pairs during their breeding season. However, the same concentration of sperm, as seen in shallow water invertebrates, is required for successful fertilization. At least one deep-sea species of echinoid requires high pressure for successful embryogenesis suggesting a depth-related segregation of deep-sea fauna. The origin of megafaunal populations of deep-sea invertebrates in the N. Atlantic is discussed in the light of these new data in relation to varying reproductive patterns and the environmental changes that have occurred during the last deglaciation.  相似文献

Understanding mechanisms fostering coexistence between invasive and resident species is important in predicting ecological, economic, or health impacts of invasive species. The mosquito Aedes aegypti coexists at some urban sites in southeastern United States with invasive Aedes albopictus, which is often superior in interspecific competition. We tested predictions for three hypotheses of species coexistence: seasonal condition-specific competition, aggregation among individual water-filled containers, and colonization–competition tradeoff across spatially partitioned habitat patches (cemeteries) that have high densities of containers. We measured spatial and temporal patterns of abundance for both species among water-filled resident cemetery vases and experimentally positioned standard cemetery vases and ovitraps in metropolitan Tampa, Florida. Consistent with the seasonal condition-specific competition hypothesis, abundances of both species in resident and standard cemetery vases were higher early in the wet season (June) versus late in the wet season (September), but the proportional increase of A. albopictus was greater than that of A. aegypti, presumably due to higher dry-season egg mortality and strong wet-season competitive superiority of larval A. albopictus. Spatial partitioning was not evident among cemeteries, a result inconsistent with the colonization-competition tradeoff hypothesis, but both species were highly independently aggregated among standard cemetery vases and ovitraps, which is consistent with the aggregation hypothesis. Densities of A. aegypti but not A. albopictus differed among land use categories, with A. aegypti more abundant in ovitraps in residential areas compared to industrial and commercial areas. Spatial partitioning among land use types probably results from effects of land use on conditions in both terrestrial and aquatic-container environments. These results suggest that both temporal and spatial variation may contribute to local coexistence between these Aedes in urban areas.  相似文献

根据2002~2003年珠江口12个航次的调查资料,分析了浮游桡足类种类组成、优势种演替和丰度的时空变化,探讨其影响因素。以表层盐度(S)变化将调查海域划分三个区域:I区(S<25)、Ⅱ区(2530)。结果表明:调查海域共出现桡足类65种,Ⅱ区和Ⅲ区的种类多于I区;桡足类的平均丰度为118ind·m-3,三个区域之间的比较为Ⅱ区(165ind·m-3)>I区(129ind·m-3)>Ⅲ区(62ind·m-3),春、夏季的丰度高于冬季;优势种有明显的时间和区域上的变化。I区9个航次的研究结果表明:I区桡足类种类较少;各月份之间的平均丰度差别大,由河口内往外呈增加趋势。盐度是影响珠江口桡足类种类组成和数量变化的主要因素。  相似文献

Three species of Boeckella (B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata) were reared from copepodite I to adult at three naturally fluctuating food levels and three temperatures in a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design. Development times, lengths, times to produce the first clutch, clutch sizes, egg voumes, interclutch times, infertile clutches, total egg production, total reproductive time and mortality were measured. Development times for the three species were surprisingly similar but mortality differed among the treatments. The three species differed in their reproductive strategies. B. triarticulata, the largest species, produced a few large clutches. B. dilatata, the smallest species, produced many small clutches and invested the most energy per egg. B. hamata produced larger clutches than B. dilatata but not as many. B. hamata was the most tolerant of low, food levels and exhibited the most plasticity across the treatments. Thus, greater plasticity in life history characters is associated with survival in a wider-range of conditions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the community structure and vertical micro‐distribution of testate amoebae and ciliates in a raised bog in eastern Poland, as well as to assess the influence of potential food resources (Chl‐a, bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates) and predators (rotifers and copepods) on protozoa communities. Samples were taken from surface, bottom and interstitial waters. At each type of micro‐habitat and each sampling date water was sampled using a plexiglass corer or mini‐piezometers. Additionally, in order to evaluate grazing pressure, field enclosures were used in which metazoan abundance and composition was manipulated by size‐fractionation. Over experiments, metazoan populations shifted from dominance of rotifers to copepods. In the first experiment, with rotifers dominating, metazoa had only a modest predatory impact on the protozoa. In contrast, the second experiment, with copepods prevailing, demonstrated a clear top‐down control of the protozoa communities by metazoan. The density and biomass of protozoa significantly differed between the studied stations, with the lowest numbers in the interstitial water and the highest in the surface water. Surface sampling were dominated by mixotrophic taxa, whereas the deepest sampling level was characterized by increase in the proportion of bacterivore species. These differences between micro‐habitats may be due to differences in environmental conditions (food resources and grazing pressure). Ordination analysis revealed that bacteria can strongly regulate the abundance and taxonomic composition of protozoa in the bottom and interstitial waters. Suspended and benthic algal communities from a mildly acidic, third-order Rhode Island stream were examined to determine the seasonal distribution, abundance and diversity of the lotic desmids. Within a one-year sampling period, 148 species and 202 subspecific taxa of desmids were identified, representing 23 genera. Species of Cosmarium and Closterium accounted for approximately 70% of the desmids present, and were the most diverse and abundant taxa during all seasons except spring, when Hyalotheca dissiliens was the dominant desmid species. Average abundance and species richness generally were greatest during summer for both suspended and benthic desmids. Most desmids occurred in benthic habitats, and were randomly distributed among substrata. Average seasonal abundance was 7.4 × 104 cells·g?1 dry wt substratum, among 13 types of substrata. Highest desmid abundance was measured among substrata with intricate morphologies, such as Fontinalis spp., which was associated with 1.2 × 106 desmid cells·g?1 dry wt substratum, or 1.7 × 103 cells·cm?2 substratum. Cell division was observed for 70 desmid taxa, and average seasonal reproduction (based on cell numbers) among all substrata ranged from 4% in winter to 20% during summer. In addition, sexually produced zygospores were found occasionally for H. dissiliens. Desmids were distributed among most substrata examined in this stream, with abundance comparable to reported estimates from softwater lakes and acid bogs. In contrast to established dogma, lotic desmids are not incidental drift organisms, but rather comprise a viable and persistent component of the stream periphyton.  相似文献

The seasonal distribution and abundance of benthic macrophytes were characterized from second- and third-order segments of a stream flowing over granite flatrock in the southeastern United States. Eighteen genera were identified over two annual cycles including macroalgae (60% of the total), angiosperms (30%), and bryophytes (10%). Light availability as affected by riparian shading was a major factor influencing community structure. Based on strong agreement among two-way indicator species analysis, detrended correspondence analysis and cluster analysis, we identified four communities characteristic of distinct light regimes and seasons. In shaded sites the red alga Lemanea australis was dominant during cool seasons, and the aquatic moss Fontinalis sp. was dominant during warm seasons. By contrast, in open sites L. australis and the angiosperm Podostemum ceratophyllum were co-dominant during cool seasons, and P. ceratophyllum was also dominant in warm seasons. The prolific macrophyte communities followed a pattern of broad seasonal maxima for dominant species along with rapid fluctuations in ephemerals. The community dynamics suggest that competitive interactions control space partitioning among macrophytes on the granite flatrock.  相似文献
