A perspective on aging in rotifers   总被引:1,自引:8,他引:1  
Most research on aging in rotifers has been performed with populations, not with individuals. As a consequence, the dependent variable in these studies is usually either mean lifespan or rate of survivorship. After a brief consideration of the literature published since the last major review (King, 1969), the results of a series of experiments are presented. Males and females of three genetically distinct clones of Brachionus plicatilis were used for a factorial life table analysis at three different temperatures. The results of these experiments indicate several potential problems in using populations to study the aging process of individuals. These problems derive from the fact that lifespan is only one component of fitness, and its relative duration may not reflect the evolutionary success of the clone. That is, lifespan is free to vary in response to both stochastic and deterministic events without significantly reducing fitness. Under these conditions, neither mean lifespan nor pattern of survivorship will provide meaningful data on the determinants of individual senescence.We gratefully acknowledge the aid and advice of William R. Rotifer composition and density, chlorophyll-a content, secchi depth and temperature were investigated with high sampling frequency (every third day in summer, weekly in winter) in the eutrophic lake Bielersee from April 1981 to April 1982. Long intervals between sampling, especially from spring to autumn, lead to contradictory interpretation of abundance dynamics of both total rotifer community and single species. Short intervals between sampling revealed a sequence of mass developments of the different species. As an example, alternating gradation phases are shown for Synchaeta grandis and Synchaeta stylata.  相似文献

Disturbance and population dynamics of rotifers in bed sediments   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Rotifers inhabiting the sediment surface and the hyporheic interstitial of a gravel stream were investigated between October 1991 and October 1992. At the sediment surface, samples were taken with a modified Hess sampler at five randomly chosen sites and at roughly weekly intervals. In the hyporheic interstitial, samples were collected using standpipe traps permanently installed at two sites at four sediment depths (0–40 cm), and every fifteen days. The distribution of five rotifer species revealed different temporal and spatial patterns. Two species, Notholca foliacea (Ehrb.) and Notholca squamula (O.F.M.) co-occurred having their temporal peaks at the beginning of summer and in autumn. Cephalodella gibba (Ehrb.) and Proales theodora (Gosse) occurred throughout the year, while Parencentrum longipes (Wulf.) showed a clear peak during the spring only in the hyporheic interstitial. The effect of variables such as water level, surface discharge and variation of the groundwater level was tested upon the densities of each species. Despite the spring spate, the species are able to persist due to the presence of low-flow refuge habitats or the dispersion into deeper layer of the hyporheic interstitial.  相似文献

本文主要报道了穴蚁蛉 Myrmeleon(Morter) sagax(Walker)幼虫的野外自然种群数量动态。穴蚁蛉 1年发生 1代 ,在自然界其幼虫 3~ 5月份数量平稳略有下降 ,5、6月间数量迅速下降 ,6月初数量最少 ;7~ 9月份数量迅速上升 ,而后下降 ;新一代穴蚁蛉幼虫 (蚁狮 )在 6月份出现。其种群 ,秋季以 1龄幼虫数量为多 ,冬季主要以 2龄幼虫为主越冬 ,春季以 3龄蚁狮占优势。春季野外采集来的蚁狮 ,在每日光照 14小时、每周两饲 (每次饲 1头米蛾 Corcyra cephalonica成虫 )的条件下饲养 ,结果发现 ,采集回时处于 3龄期的蚁狮比自然界大约提前 1个月结茧化蛹和羽化 ;而采集回时处于 2龄期的蚁狮则和自然界中的情况基本一致。  相似文献

本文根据湘北 4 9年水稻三化螟 Tryporyza incertulas( Walker)种群密度消长的历史资料 ,着重分析了 1996~ 1998年连续 3年三化螟在湘北猖獗为害的原因 ,即中稻、一季晚稻面积增加 ,杂交中、晚稻“双两大”的推广 ,晚稻的大面积早插都便于三化螟辗转繁殖为害 ;稻田春收作物——油菜的大面积种植 ,增加了三化螟的有效越冬虫源 ;水稻播期拉长及品种的多元化和栽培方式的多样化 ,使水稻危险生育期与蚁螟盛孵期吻合度加大 ;三化螟对农药的抗性增强和主害代发生期变得不整齐 ,增加了防治的难度  相似文献

Abstract:  Population dynamics of the citrus leaf-miner (CLM) Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, and its major parasitoid Citrostichus phyllocnistoides (Narayanan) were investigated from June to September 1994 at the teaching and research farm of the Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University (FAFU), south-east China. Based on the field investigation, the functional and numerical responses of C. phyllocnistoides were studied in laboratory experiments. During the survey period, four peaks of CLM and C. phyllocnistoides populations were observed in the growing stage of summer shoots and two peaks of CLM and C. phyllocnistoides populations, respectively, in the growing stage of fall shoots. C. phyllocnistoides is the most abundant parasitoid both in seasonal and spatial dynamics, and demonstrates a Holling type III functional response to CLM. Parasitism varied with the densities of both parasitoid and host. A 1 : 10 ratio was recorded to be an optimal proportion of C. phyllocnistoides to CLM.  相似文献

A two year fortnightly collection of data from the 27 m station in the Oresund on the tubificid species Tubificoides amplivasatus was analyzed for population trends and life stages. Recruitment patterns from year to year were consistent in timing but very irratic in magnitude, being similar to patterns seen in other estuarine and marine annelids. Sexually mature T. amplivasatus were found throughout the study period, but mature mated specimens were more abundant during late summer and autumn. It is estimated that from 120 to 150 days is spent, by this species, in the cocoon and individuals may reach maturity in less than one year. There was some indication of individuals with regressed genital organs indicating that they may live longer than one year. At the 27 m station T. amplivasatus is part of a complex and well developed benthic community. Temporal variation in this species was highly correlated to that of other major taxa (bivalves, ophiuroids).  相似文献

The population dynamics and production ecology of the two dominant copepod species, Acanthocyclops robustus and Mesocyclops leuckarti, in Tjeukemeer (The Netherlands) were studied for three successive years. Since copepods in Tjeukemeer show continuous recruitment, a population dynamics model INSTAR was developed and used to integrate field data on population density, population structure and fecundity and laboratory data on development rates and length-weight relationships. The pattern of size specific mortality indicated that both invertebrate and vertebrate predation were important in the regulation of population numbers.  相似文献

以“空间代替时间”的方法,以种群径级结构代替年龄结构,采用静态生命表和生存分析的方法,探讨了天柱山国家森林公园黄山松种群结构和动态规律。结果表明,随海拔升高,黄山松种群密度增大,径级分布范围减小,种群存活曲线由Deevey-Ⅱ型之间过渡到Deevey—Ⅰ型,种群由稳定型过渡为增长型。表明由低海拔向高海拔,黄山松种群处于不同的演替和发展阶段。  相似文献

There are few quantitative data on the role of emergence from diapausing eggs in population dynamics of natural populations of zooplankton species; to our knowledge, all these concern copepods and cladocerans. We present here direct estimates of emergence from bottom resting eggs for another important category of freshwater zooplankton, namely rotifers. Three populations of rotifers of the genus Brachionus were studied in a lake. During the study period 10 population increases, each corresponding to an individual sampling interval, were detected. For each interval, emergence from immediately hatching, parthenogenetic eggs calculated on the basis of the Edmondson-Paloheimo model and emergence from diapausing bottom eggs determined in short-term experiments were estimated and compared to each other. We found that three of the population increases observed are entirely explained by parthenogenetic natality. In contrast, emergence from diapausing eggs can, on its own, account for none of population increases. For two population increases, however, it accounts for that part of population growth which remains unexplained by the parthenogenetic natality. For rotifer populations studied, emergence from diapausing eg eggs is generally less important than parthenogenetic births, when both are regarded as an immediate cause of population growth. This is in sharp contrast to the data available for some crustaceans (De Stasio, 1990) where the role of emergence from diapausing eggs in population dynamics has been clearly shown.  相似文献

The population growth and biomass production of the pitcher-plant (Sarracenia purpurea L.) inquiline, Habrotocha rosa Donner (Rotifera: Bdelloidea), its consumption by other pitcher-plant inqulines, and its excretion of phosphorus (PO4–P) and nitrogen (NO3–N and NH4–N), were investigated in laboratory experiments. Observed population growth and production rate of H. rosa were higher at pH 4 (2.3 rotifers d-1) than at pH 3 (1.3 rotifers d-1), 5 (1.9 rotifers d-1), or 6 (0.8 rotifers d-1). Populations of H. rosa are an abundant and reliable food source for larvae of the dipteran inqulines Wyeomyia smithii (Coq.) and Blaesoxipha fletcheri (Aldrich) that co-occur with H. rosa in S. purpurea pitchers. Abundance of H. rosa within a pitcher is negatively associated with abundance of dipteran larvae, and these larvae consume rotifers in direct proportion to rotifer density (Type I functional response). Habrotrocha rosa may also account for the majority of the plant's supply of N and P. An average population of rotifers in the field (∼400 per pitcher) can excrete ∼5.2 μg NO3-N, ∼3.91 μg NH4-N, and ∼18.4 μg PO4–P per day into a single leaf, and excretion rate is independent of water pH. Over the six-month growing season of pitcher-plants in Massachusetts, U.S.A., we estimate that rotifers could supply 8.8–43 mg of N and 18.2–88 mg of P. These values far exceed the amount of N and P previously estimated to be supplied annually to the plants through insect capture or rainfall. The rotifers of the recently-commissioned Azibo reservoir were studied during two years. The community was similar to that of other portuguese reservoirs with Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra spp., Asplanchna priodonta and Collotheca pelagica dominant, although densities varied strongly. Maximum rotifer density was 640 ind l–1 in 1987 and 315 ind l–1 in 1988. During the first year two density peaks were observed, while in the second year fluctuations were irregular. Phytoplankton availability was considered the main reason for the fluctuation of rotifer density, although temperature, dissolved oxygen and cladoceran interference may also have played a role. A high density of Anabaena flos-aquae might have facilitated the dominance of K. cochlearis in 1988.  相似文献

In the northern part of Lake Peipus, 140 taxa of rotifers were identified, with species of Anuraeopsis, Conochilus, Keratella, Polyarthra and Synchaeta dominating. Two main periods of sexual reproduction occur, in the spring and autumn. Different life cycle patterns are represented. Rotifer number and biomass have two maxima between spring and early autumn. The contribution of rotifers to total zooplankton production varies from 13.6% (Oct.) to 89.8% (May). The average production of grazing rotifers is 485.1 kJ m–2, while that of predatory rotifers (Asplanchna) is 10.0 kJ m–2.  相似文献

In samples collected from different parts of the Republic of Mali (W-Africa), ninety-two taxa of rotifers were identified. Some were present in different forms; 56% were cosmopolitan, 19% thermophilous with a wide distribution, 20% tropicopolitan and 5% cold-stenothermous. 子千沙鼠(Meriones meridianus)是荒漠和半荒漠地区常见的鼠种之一,作者于1991~、995年4~10月每月中旬,在内蒙古达拉特旗中国农业守草原研究所鄂尔多斯沙地草场改良试验站,利用直线夹日法在站内的流动消逝天,半流动消逝一,固定沙地,丘间滩地,林地和农田中开展了种群数量调查。6a共布放124245闪日,捕获鼠7498只,其中子午沙鼠1408只,在各种鼠中占18.77%,居第二位。  相似文献
