Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity from the brown alga. Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) le Jol. Its molecular mass was 60 kDa as determined by gel filtration. The pH optimum of the carboxylating reaction was 7.9 and the apparent Km for PEP4, ADP and HCO3- were 0.036, 0.0116 and 50 mol · m-3, respectively. Rates of light and dark carbon fixation are also reported for A. nodosum apices and it is shown that rates of in vitro PEPCK activity would account for the observed rate of dark fixation. The physiological role of PEPCK is discussed in relation to light-independent carbon fixation.  相似文献

A new species of eledonid octopus is described from thesouthwesternAtlantic Ocean from depths between 90 and 1000 m off thecoastsof southern Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. This species,Graneledoneyamana is characterized by having a papillose skin, twowelldeveloped 'horns' above the eyes, small gills with 5-7 lamellaeonthe outer demibranch, arms with uniserial suckers, 35-80on femalesand 26-70 on males. The third right arm is hectocotylized,the ligulais small, the calamus is large and well differentiated.Ink sacabsent. The nature and seasonal extent of microbial fouling on Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) LeJol., Fucus vesiculosus L., Polysiphonia lanosa (L.) Tandy and Chondrus crispus Stackh. were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Bacterial filaments and smaller rod and coccoid forms dominated the fouling communities on all species, with pennate diatoms constituting a minor component in contrast to results with plastic substrates on which pennate diatoms dominated and preceded bacterial colonization. The total percent microbial coverage on the surfaces of all four seaweed species was determined by monthly stereological analyses of representative composite micrographs. These showed a simultaneous decline between April and May which could represent the die-off of the cold water bacterial flora when water temperature increased past the threshold for obligate psychrophiles. Microbial colonization patterns were directly correlated (P = 0.005) with maximum coverage in April and November–December and reduced levels from May to October. Significant inverse (P < 0.041) correlations between total percent coverage and water temperature indicate distinct seasonal cycles, however, the patterns of dominance by filamentous bacteria and rod and coccoid forms were markedly different. Total coverage patterns of both rhodophytes showed no apparent seasonal cycle and were not related to water temperature. Rod and coccoid bacteria were apparently suppressed year round on P. lanosa relative to the other species. These interspecific differences in seasonal fouling patterns are discussed in light of possible modes of regulation, especially algal antibiosis.  相似文献

Colonization and growth of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. were investigated in two Maine estuaries from 1972 to 1978. Following denudation of intertidal rock, substrata were initially colonized by Fucus vesiculosus L.; eventually, Ascophyllum supplanted Fucus, and became dominant in terms of percentage cover. Ascophyllum settled first and most densely in the low intertidal zone, but its fastest growth occurred in the mid-intertidal zone. Some, but not all, Ascophyllum germlings produced a vesicle within one year of colonization. The mean annual growth of A. nodosum was variable among sites, zones and years.  相似文献

This paper describes a new genus and species of endolithic microorganism, Cyanosaccus piriformis Lukas and Golubic (Cyanophyta, Pleurocapsales). It is characterized by 1) having one to four spherical to pear-shaped cells within a stalked, gelatinous sheath, 2) its mode of reproduction by release of a large number of baeocytes produced by the proximal daughter cell following transverse binary fission of the parent cell, and 3) its ability to bore into and dwell within carbonate substrates in the marine environment. Its habit of asymmetrical sheath production allies it with the common microboring genera Hyella and Solentia within the family Hyellaceae. Cyanosaccus is a common inhabitant of mollusk shells found in water depths ranging from +0.5 to –75 m MLW on the eastern Florida continental margin and in carbonate sands or rocks in the intertidal and subtidal zones of the Bermuda and Bahama Islands. Its distribution within and among inhabited substrates is patchy due to its mode of reproduction and growth.  相似文献

A new species of marine endolithic cyanophyte, Hyella pyxis Lukas and Hoffman (Order: Pleurocapsales), differs from other species of Hyella in its cell and filament dimensions, the manner in which its branches are initiated and the presence of gloeocapsin in the sheaths of colonies from the intertidal zone. Hyella pyxis colonies consist of a small cluster of coccoid cells located at the substrate surface and long, conspicuously branched filaments composed of cells that are longer than they are wide. Branches are initiated by the reorientation of the distal end of a filament cell or by the elongation of a filament cell, usually at one of its distal corners. Chromatic adaptation was not observed perhaps accounting for the relatively shallow depth limit of this species. Hyella pyxis was found within mollusk shells from the continental margin of eastern Florida to a depth of 50 m and carbonate rocks in the intertidal zone on Bermuda.  相似文献

A new species of endolithic cyanophyte, Hyella gigas Lukas and Golubic (Order: Pleurocapsales), differs from other species of Hyella by its larger cell and filament dimensions and its laminated, often pigmented sheath. It bores into mollusk shells and other marine carbonate substrates on the east coast of North America, the Bahama Islands and the Northern Mediterranean Sea, where it is found from near mean low water down to 25 m depth. This comparatively shallow maximum depth is probably due to the limited capacity of Hyella gigas to adapt to changing light quality and intensity. We reject the suppression of the genus Hyella as proposed by Drouet and Daily.  相似文献

The characteristics of dark carbon fixation by Ascophyllum nodosum were investigated. In longitudinal profile the maximum rates of dark and light dependent fixation are found at the apex. The use of Michaelis-Menten kinetics did not suitably describe the relationship between the uptake rate in the dark and the total inorganic carbon concentration. Dark fixation was saturated at a total inorganic carbon concentration [TIC] of 2.5 mM. The use of the Hill-Whittingham equation to describe the uptake curve indicates that the process is diffusion limited. Comparisons of dark fixation at high (8.0) and low (5.2) pH suggest that bicarbonate ions are used as a source of inorganic carbon. The transfer of 14C, fixed in the dark, from the ethanol soluble to the insoluble fraction was relatively slow irrespective of the light treatment during the chase period. Ascophyllum nodosum displays a small diel fluctuation in the pH of aqueous extracts and titratable acidity similar to that displayed by CAM plants. The significance of dark fixation to the overall carbon budget is discussed.  相似文献

Morphological, demographic and physiological characteristics of Rhode Island intertidal and subtidal populations of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis were compared in order to examine factors influencing vertical distribution. The two populations had distinctive morphologies: subtidal plants were narrower (more terete) and highly branched compared with intertidal plants. The subtidal population showed signs of necrosis and breakage, which was reflected in significantly shorter mean plant size. High survivorship and low recruitment of both population resulted in relatively constant densities, averaging 91 and 50 plants per m2 in the intertidal and subtidal habitats, respectively. Intertidal plants had higher mean annual growth rates (25 cm.yr?1) than subtidal plants (2 cm.yr?1). In general, intertidal plants had higher photosynthetic capacity and nutrient (NO3?) uptake rates than the subtidal population but maintained lower light-harvesting pigment and tissue nitrogen concentrations. Although Ascophyllum nodosum is capable of survival and growth in subtidal as well as intertidal areas, results of this study suggest that different selective pressures affect persistence in each habitat. The scarcity of plants in the subtidal environment may be due to the lack of a critical balance between algal production, allocation of photosynthate, and the negative effects of grazers or competitors.  相似文献

Laminaria saccharina (L) Lamour. Sporophytes were monitored monthly from October 1982 to September 1983 to investigate reproduction phenology and relationshiops to growth paatterns aaat its southern limit of distribution in the northwest Atlantic Ocean (Long Island Soundd). Plants exhibited an annual growth pattern. Growth raate, bladelehgth, maximum width, area, stiipe lehgth an wet weight swhoed the same seasonal pattern and reached maximum values between May and June. Only blade thickness continued to increase tthrooughout the ovservation period. Blade dissintegration occurred dduring August and September. Reproductive sporophytes occurred throughout the observation period; the greatest frequency of appearance occurred in October (43.8%) and June (37.8%). The blade area covered by sori ranged from 2.4% (Janaury) to 6.1% (August). Meiospore release under laboratory conditions was maximum in May and minimum in July. No meio-spores were released in August Sporulation was not correlated with meristematic growth of nitrogen content How ever, reproductive plants were generally larger and thicker throughout the sporulation period, and had a greater carbort content is spring than nonreproductive plants. Fecundity and reproductive success of female gametophytes were maximum in spring and minimum in winter. The growth of early sporophyte stages in the laboratory was greatest in early spring; however, juvenile macroscopic stages were hardly observed in the field during summer months due to warm water temperatures. “Over-summering” of gamelophytes and / or microscopic sporophytes may account for the annual cycle of Laminaria at its southern limit of distribution.  相似文献

Centroceras internitens n. sp. (Rhodophyceae, Ceramiaceae) was found in the Florida Keys and Bermuda only as an epiphyte on Ceramium nitens (C. Agardh) J. Agardh. It is described on the basis of many collections, including an abundance of reproductive material representing all stages of the life history. Laboratory culture has not been successful. The type locality is a well-known limestone platform on the Atlantic Ocean side of West Summerland Key, Florida Keys. In addition to living material, C. internitens was found on eight herbarium specimens of Ceramium nitens at the United States National Museum, thereby establishing records of its occurrence throughout the Caribbean Sea and dating back to 1887.  相似文献

Berthella canariensis is described from Canary Islands. Themantle is smooth and its ground colour is grey, with black andopaque white spots scattered regularly all over the dorsal surface.White spots are less abundant than black ones. The posterior halfof the mantle has areas of with a paler ground colour that are variablein size. Berthella canariensis has several features that distinguishit from other described members of Berthella. It had a broadradula with numerous teeth per half-row. However, other aspectsof its anatomy, such as the absence of a medial buccal glandand the presence of a tuberculate gill, distinguish it fromother species with a broad radula. As the present species has two features found in some speciesof Pleurobranchus and several new higher taxa have been describedrecently, Willan's (1987) phylogenetic hypothesis was re-analysed.This analysis largely supports the hypothesis presented by Willan. The sister-group relationship of B. Canariensis with B. californiais supported by two synapomorphies. The relationship of thesetwo species to other species of Berthella is poorly resolvedin the present analysis and requires additional study of allmembers of the genus. Similarly, questions of the monophylyof Bathyberthella, Polictenidia, Parabathyberthella, Tomthompsoniaand Berthella require the consideration of additional speciesand comparison with other member of Berthella and Berthellina. Despite the need for further study, the mohophyly of the cladecontaining Bathyberthella, Polictenidia, Parabathyberthellais well supported. Similarly, numerous synapomorphic featuresconfirm the monophyly of the clade containing Bathyberthella,Polictenidia, Parabathyberthella, Tomthompsonia, Berthellinaand Berthella, and its sister-group relationship with the Pleurobranchus. The present study reveals that the Notaspidea have three distinctconfigurations of triaulic reproductive systems, not previouslydifferentiated.
