Summary Single-species, steady-state chemostat cultures of two freshwater diatoms showed that Fragilaria crotonensis had a lower equilibrial requirement for silicate than did Tabellaria fenestratra. Using this information, resource competition theory predicts that Fragilaria should be able to invade silicate-limited equilibrium populations of Tabellaria, but Tabellaria should not be able to invade silicatelimited Fragilaria. This prediction was supported by a series of invasion experiments. The two species did not have detectable differences in their phosphate requirements. Invasion experiments showed that Fragilaria could invade Tabellaria cultures, but that Tabellaria could not invade Fragilaria cultures under phosphate-limited conditions. These results are consistent with predictions based on previous studies of the phosphate physiology of these genera.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The successional patterns of the dominant phytoplankton species in Lake Maarsseveen (The Netherlands) were very similar in 1980 and 1981. In December/January the diatoms Stephanodiscus hantzschii Grun., Stephanodiscus astraea (Ehr.) Grun. and Asterionella formosa Hass. dominated the algal community (A. formosa had several further population increases during the year). Fragilaria crotonensis Kitt. came to dominance in March/April, followed by the chrysophyte Dinobryon divergens Imhof and the diatom Cyclotella comta (Ehr.) Kütz in May/June. A second appearance of D. divergens was observed in July/August, followed in 1980 by F. crotonensis and a third small increase of D. divergens. In both years S. astraea and S. hantzschii started to grow again in November/December. Cryptophyceae and Chlorophyta were present throughout the year, but did not show a distinct succession. 2. Natural community bioassays, performed under natural light and temperature conditions in a newly developed outdoor bioassay apparatus, showed that phosphate was the major nutrient limiting the growth rate of the phytoplankton. From January till June, during the decline in phosphorus concentration, the diatoms became successively phosphate limited in the sequence: S. hantzschii, S. astraea, F. crotonensis, A. formosa and C. comta. Light limitation was probably the major cause of the relatively late start of F. crotonensis in early spring. 3. D. divergens, increasing after the diatoms from June till September, was stimulated by the addition of a chelator (EDTA). The chelator might stimulate the formation of trace metal species favouring their uptake (e.g. iron). 4. The patterns of succession of the diatoms observed from January till June and from July till December were to a large extent symmetrical. The controlling factors followed opposite trends: declining phosphorus concentrations with increasing irradiance from winter till spring and increasing phosphorus concentrations with decreasing irradiance from summer till late winter.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Surprisingly few data compare the apparent responses of diatoms and macroinvertebrates to metals in streams. We examined variation in metals, diatoms and macroinvertebrates between 51 streams in metal‐mining areas of Wales and Cornwall, U.K., using a survey design with multiple reference and polluted sites. 2. To quantify variations in metals between sites, we calculated cumulative criterion unit (CCU) scores, a recently defined measure of total stream metal concentration and toxicity, to account for additive effects of each metal relative to putative toxic thresholds. We compared assemblage responses among epilithic diatoms and macroinvertebrates to CCU scores or individual metal concentrations using correlation and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). 3. Macroinvertebrate diversity, richness and total abundance declined and evenness increased with increasing copper concentrations. Trends with CCU scores were significant but less pronounced. Some individual macroinvertebrate taxa varied significantly in abundance with CCU scores, copper or zinc, but overall assemblage composition correlated only with manganese, pH and nitrate. 4. Among diatoms, pH and conductivity explained the major variations in assemblage composition, and neither diversity, richness nor evenness varied with metal concentration. Nevertheless, the single strongest predictor of diatom assemblages on ordination axis 2 was the CCU score. The abundances of some macroinvertebrate taxa, particularly grazers, also explained significant variations in diatom assemblages that were linked to both metals and acid–base status. 5. Diatom species apparently tolerant of high metal concentrations included Psammothidium helveticum, Eunotia subarcuatoides, Pinnularia subcapitata and Sellaphora seminulum. Of these, P. helveticum, E. subarcuatoides and P. subcapitata were abundant at lower pH than S.seminulum and might indicate metal enrichment over different pH ranges. Sensitive species included Fragilaria capucina var. rumpens, Achnanthes oblongella and Tabellaria flocculosa. 6. We conclude that macroinvertebrates at these sites reflected metal pollution most strongly through variations in diversity while effects on diatoms were best reflected by changes in assemblage composition. We suggest that, with further refinement, CCU scores might be useful in evaluating the possible effects of metal pollution on benthic organisms in European rivers.  相似文献

The heterotrichous alga Stigeoclonium tenue Küetzing is dominant in many streams with high densities of herbivores. Previous in situ studies in Walker Branch (WB), a woodland stream in eastern Tennessee, indicated that dominance by Stigeoclonium basal cells was “grazer-dependent”; however, Stigeoclonium also appeared to have a lower biomass–specific productivity rate than other species that dominated when snails were experimentally removed. Here, an explicit test of the grazing dependence of Stigeoclonium was made with unialgal cultures established in the laboratory. Five different “assemblage types” were tested: 1 and 2) unialgal cultures of Stigeoclonium at low and high biomass, 3 and 4) a mixed assemblage of diatoms at low and high biomass, and 5) a natural stream community. Reduction in chlorophyll a after exposure to snail grazing was dependent on assemblage type (one-way ANOVA, P < 0.0001); low biomass Stigeoclonium tiles and tiles from the stream (on which basal cells of Stigeoclonium were dominant) were most grazer-resistant. In addition, Stigeoclonium had a lower biomass-specific productivity rate (measured as H14CO3? uptake) than a mixed assemblage of diatoms, regardless of biomass level, suggesting an underlying tradeoff between resistance to herbivory and competitive ability. Additional laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the response of Stigeoclonium to high (approx. 150 μmol quanta ·m?2· s?1)and low (approx. 25 μmol quanta · m?2· s?1) irradiance when nutrients were at 1) ambient WB concentrations and 2) increased 1000× ambient concentrations. There was a positive response of growth to increased irradiance only under high nutrient conditions. This suggests that observed reductions in the abundance of Stigeoclonium under high irradiance/low nutrient conditions that occur on a seasonal basis in WB can be explained in part by autecological resource requirements of this alga. We use these results to model the response of algal communities dominated by basal-regenerating species (e.g. Stigeoclonium) to gradients in herbivory and productivity. The results of our culture studies, combined with an overview of factors affecting communities dominated by grazer-resistant species, illustrate how both broad-scale (e.g. functional form) and species-specific studies can be combined to achieve an understanding of community dynamics.  相似文献

Regulated rivers are novel ecosystems with altered temperature and flow regimes that can be used to test distribution patterns of microscopic organisms, such as diatoms. Our objective was to describe the spatial and seasonal patterns of diatoms in a cold-water, oligotrophic river within a region of warm-water, mesotrophic rivers. The Lower Mountain Fork, in south-east Oklahoma (USA), is maintained as a year-around, stocked fishery by the release of cold, hypolimnetic water from Broken Bow Lake and is the southern-most known site of Didymosphenia geminata in North America. Epilithic diatoms were sampled six times at nine sites over a distance of 15.5 km and, within this area, 27 times at the site of the main Didymosphenia bloom. Percentage composition data were analysed for assemblage composition using multivariate analysis, nutrient specificity using a diatom-based metric, and species associations using similarity profiles. Eighty-eight taxa were found, of which 10 were unidentifiable and included local undescribed species and species clusters. Three species [Gomphonema (parvulum morph), Achnanthidium rivulare and Achnanthidium minutissimum] comprised over 60% of the diatom abundance at all sites, and downstream and seasonal patterns were evident for both these and less abundant taxa. Notably, diatom assemblages in the three sites below the dam were similar to that at the lowermost site, below a much smaller dam. The oligotraphentic diatom assemblage reflected the water chemistry of the river. The Didymosphenia bloom had been scoured by a large spate prior to the study and the species was present at two of the nine sites in low numbers but failed to bloom during the study, possibly because of a trend towards increasing phosphorus concentrations in the reservoir (Didymosphenia blooms under low P concentrations). No other species shared Didymosphenia’s distribution pattern over the study reach, highlighting the novelty of Didymosphenia’s presence in the river.  相似文献

Diurnal variation of phytoplankton in Loch Lomond   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
A study of diurnal variation over a 48 hour period was undertaken in July 1973 to ascertain the extent and timing of some major chemical, physical and biological variables in Loch Lomond. The phytoplankton population was dominated by the diatom Tabellaria fenestrata, with a maximum abundance between 04.00 and 06.00 h in surface waters on both days. A distinct diurnal variation in cell numbers was also recorded. Chlorophyll a values also showed a regular pattern of variation with a single peak between 10.00 and 14.00 h each day. Some chemical changes appeared to be a direct consequence of phytoplankton multiplication. Nitrate-nitrogen showed a decrease in concentration coinciding with the period of cell multiplication, whereas dissolved silica concentrations only fell on the completion of this process. Other common diatoms displayed less distinct patterns of variation although Fragilaria crotonensis attained its maximum abundance in surface waters. Considerable variation was recorded in the number of organisms and chlorophyll a levels at 25 cm intervals in the upper metre of the water column, with large variations in standing-crop and chemical parameters in the space of one hour. Diurnal oscillations in the position of the thermocline were recorded, with the thermal discontinuity being at its greatest depth in the early hours of the morning. The hypolimnion and thermocline regions clearly acted as a source of nutrient supply to the epilimnion. Microphytoplankton populations were studied in shallow coastal water (<60 m) near the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF) and three reference areas in Admiralty Bay in early and late summer (2002–2003). Phytoplankton was diverse (113 taxa), but not abundant (103 cells l−1). The highest abundances (>104 cells l−1) were caused by pennate benthic diatoms (Fragilaria striatula Lyngbye) that occurred mainly in early summer, associated with the presence of ice. In late summer, when the water temperature (−0.4 to 1.5°C), salinity (34 to 35), and phosphate (2.6 to 4.5 μmol l−1) were highest and the dissolved oxygen was lowest (6.4 to 2.9 ml l−1), centric diatoms (Thalassiosira spp.) were more abundant, suggesting an influence of oceanic waters. Phytoplankton abundance (≤102 cells l−1) and chlorophyll a concentrations (0.22 μg l−1) were lowest close to EACF. Pennate diatoms were dominant close to shore and in surface waters elsewhere, probably because of ice melting or sediment resuspension caused by water mixing.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics and the hemodynamic effects (blood pressure, heart rate) of oral organic nitrates have been investigated in healthy subjects after oral single-dose application either in the morning or in the evening. Isosorbide-5- monitrate (IS-SMN, 60 rng) was administered as an immediate-release tablet or as a slow-release formulation. Isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN, 20 mg) was ingested as an immediate-release tablet. After administration of IS-5-MN as an immediate-release tablet, the drug was more rapidly absorbed in the morning (tmax of 0.9 h) than in the evening (tmax of 2.1 h). The rapid absorption led to more pronounced effects in the morning, at which time maximum drug concentrations occurred at the same time as peak effects were observed. After evening administration, however, peak effects were in advance of the maximum drug concentrations. No chronokinetics were observed after application of the slow-release formulation of IS-5- MN. In accordance with the results of the immediate-release formulation, peak effects of the slow-release preparation occurred significantly earlier than peak drug concentrations after evening than after morning dosing. ISDN bioavailability was higher after morning than after evening administration and hemodynamic effects were more pronounced in the evening than in the morning. These results show that daily variations in pharmacokinetics and/or hemodynamic effects can be observed with oral nitrates. In addition, galenic formulation can influence the time-specified pharmacokinetics of IS-5-MN.  相似文献

1. Daily changes in the flight activity of aquatic insects have been investigated in only a few water beetles and bugs. The diel flight periodicity of aquatic insects and the environmental factors governing it are poorly understood. 2. We found that primary aquatic insects belonging to 99 taxa (78 Coleoptera, 21 Heteroptera) fly predominantly in mid‐morning, and/or around noon and/or at nightfall. There appears to be at least four different types of diurnal flight activity rhythm in aquatic insects, characterised by peak(s): (i) in mid‐morning; (ii) in the evening; (iii) both in mid‐morning and the evening; (iv) around noon and again in the evening. These activity maxima are quite general and cannot be explained exclusively by daily fluctuations of air temperature, humidity, wind speed and risks of predation, which are all somewhat stochastic. 3. We found experimental evidence that the proportion (%) P(θ) of reflecting surfaces detectable polarotactically as ‘water’ is always maximal at the lowest (dawn and dusk) and highest (noon) angles of solar elevation (θ) for dark reflectors while P(θ) is maximal at dawn and dusk (low solar elevations) for bright reflectors under clear or partly cloudy skies. 4. From the temporal coincidence between peaks in the diel flight activity of primary aquatic insects and the polarotactic detectability P(θ) of water surfaces we conclude that the optimal times of day for aquatic insects to disperse are the periods of low and high solar elevations θ. The θ‐dependent reflection–polarisation patterns, combined with an appropriate air temperature, clearly explain why polarotactic aquatic insects disperse to new habitats in mid‐morning, and/or around noon and/or at dusk. The diurnal variation of airborne pollen concentrations of Alnus, Betula, Pinus, Poaceae, Urtica and Artemisia was examined at the sampling station in Gdańsk, northern Poland. Diurnal patterns of Alnus and Pinus pollen show distinctly lower values and low frequency of diurnal maxima between midnight and late morning and a clear rise of pollen counts at around noon. The rather high values remain during the afternoon and evening. The Betula pollen counts are almost evenly distributed along day and night and diurnal maxima appear in similar frequency at any time of day. Pollen concentrations of Poaceae increase at about 9.00 hours and remain high till late evening. Diurnal patterns of Urtica and Artemisia show very clear variation with high peaks at around 9.00 hours (Artemisia) and 13.00 hours (Urtica). The comparison of the data from Gdańsk with the data from other aerobiological stations shows very similar general features in the diurnal patterns irrespective the region or the local situation.  相似文献

Inhibition of nitrate uptake by aluminium in maize   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Experiments with two maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids were conducted to determine (a) if the inhibition of nitrate uptake by aluminium involved a restriction in the induction (synthesis/assemblage) of nitrate transporters, and (b) if the magnitude of the inhibition was affected by the concurrent presence of ambient ammonium. At pH 4.5, the rate of nitrate uptake from 240 μM NH4NO3 was maximally inhibited by 100 μM aluminium, but there was little measurable effect on the rate of ammonium uptake. Presence of ambient aluminium did not eliminate the characteristic induction pattern of nitrate uptake upon first exposure of nitrogen-depleted seedlings to that ion. Removal of ambient aluminium after six hours of induction resulted in recovery within 30 minutes to rates of nitrate uptake that were similar to those of plants induced in absence of aluminium. Addition of aluminium to plants that had been induced in absence of aluminium rapidly restricted the rate of nitrate uptake to the level of plants that had been induced in the presence of aluminium. The data are interpreted as indicating that aluminium inhibited the activity of nitrate transporters to a greater extent than the induction of those transporters. When aluminium was added at initiation of induction, the effect of ambient ammonium on development of the inhibition by aluminium differed between the two hybrids. Nutrient recycling is an essential ecosystem process provided by animals. In many aquatic systems, fish have been identified as important in ecosystem nutrient recycling; however, this importance can vary widely between systems. The factors controlling intersystem variation in animal‐mediated nutrient cycling have rarely been examined and as such it remains unclear what impact human landscape changes will have upon these processes. Here we examined rates of nutrient recycling for temperate stream fish assemblages along a gradient of agricultural land use (proportion cropland in the watershed: 1–59%). We quantified nutrient excretion rates of both ammonium–N (NH4+–N) and phosphate (as soluble reactive phosphate: SRP) for fish assemblages at eight streams in southern Ontario, Canada with species‐specific excretion measurements and quantitative assemblage sampling. For both nutrients, total assemblage excretion exhibited a strong positive relationship with riparian cropland. The distance required for fish assemblages to turn over ambient nutrient pools was shorter for cropland systems, indicating that the relative importance of excreted nutrients was higher in these systems. Based on measured uptake rates of NH4+–N in two streams (one higher cropland and one low cropland) and on modeled uptake rates for all streams, the proportion of ecosystem demand that can be satisfied by excretion is generally higher in the more agricultural streams. These patterns appear to be driven largely by disproportionate increases in fish assemblage biomass with increasing stream nutrient concentrations.  相似文献

Population densities and total phosphorus concentrations in samples from different lakes of south-eastern Norway were determined. In addition some transplant experiments with dilute phytoplankton populations were carried out. A laboratory batch culture method was used.The diatoms studied may be divided into three ecological groups based on their cell densities and total phosphorus concentrations in the samples. This classification was supported by the experimental results. Cyclotella spp., Asterionella formosa and Tabellaria fenestrata did not grow or had low growth rates above pH 9. Synedra cf. acus and Fragilaria crontonensis had often high growth rates within the pH 9–10 range, but were not able to grow at pH values above 10. High pH-values had no effect on the growth rate of Oscillatoria. Oscillatoria, Synedra and Stephanodiscus were severely growth-limited in filtered water from oligotrophic lakes. Maximum growth rates of all the populations studied were often obtained after addition of phosphate and chelated iron (FeEDTA) in combination to filtered water samples from oligotrophic/mesotrophic lakes.  相似文献

A field study to determine the precise times of year at which three intertidal species of Fucus start to produce hyaline hairs and cease producing such hairs was conducted on the Isle of Man, U.K. Hairs were first observed during February, and within 6 days of their initial appearance, all tagged plants of all species at all tidal heights on the shore possessed hairs. Hair production continued until the beginning of October, at which time Fucus plants growing at the lowest stations (+ 3.0 m) had glabrous apical growth. Hair production continued later into the year for plants growing higher on the shore, and it was not until mid-November that glabrous apical growth was observed in all plants. Phosphate uptake rates of pilose (hairy) and glabrous (hairless) apical sections were measured in November 1988 for F. spiralis L. and in January 1989 for F. spiralis and F. serratus L., at phosphate concentrations ranging from 0.8 μM (ambient seawater) to 9.0 μM. In ambient seawater, pilose plants of F. spiralis removed phosphate 2–3 times faster than glabrous plants, whereas the uptake rates of pilose plants of F. serratus were about 50% greater than those of glabrous plants. The differences between uptake rates of pilose and glabrous plants of both species were smaller or nonsignificant at higher phosphate concentrations. The field and laboratory data are consistent with the hypothesis that hairs are formed in Fucus as a response to increased nutrient demand and that hairs facilitate the uptake of nutrients from seawater at concentrations typical of natural situations.  相似文献

During adolescence, a shift from morningness to eveningness occurs, yet school continues to start early in the morning. Hence, adolescents are at risk for social jetlag, i.e. a discrepancy between biological and social timing. It remains to be determined whether chronotype associates with daily and daytime-specific eating patterns during this potentially critical period. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether chronotype is decisive for daily eating patterns [total energy intake (TEI, kcal), total macronutrient intake (% of TEI), eating occasion frequency (n/day), meal frequency (n/day), snack frequency (n/day), duration of nightly fasting], or daytime-specific eating patterns [morning (before 11 am) energy intake (% of TEI), morning macronutrient intake (% of morning energy intake), regular breakfast skipping (no morning energy intake at least on 2 of 3?days, yes/no), evening (after 6 pm) energy intake (% of TEI), evening macronutrient intake (% of evening energy intake), regular dinner skipping (no evening energy intake at least on 2 of 3?days, yes/no)] in German adolescents. Chronotype was assessed by use of the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire and is defined as the midpoint of sleep corrected for sleep-debt accumulated over the workweek (the later the midpoint of sleep, the later the chronotype). A total of 223 participants (10–18?years) provided 346 questionnaires and concurrent 3-day weighed dietary records. Associations between chronotype and eating patterns were analyzed cross-sectionally using multivariable linear and logistic mixed-effects regression models. Adolescents with earlier and later chronotypes did not differ in their daily eating patterns. With respect to daytime-specific eating patterns, 1?h delay in chronotype was associated with 4.0 (95% CI 2.5–6.6) greater odds of regular breakfast skipping (p < 0.0001). In addition, later chronotype was associated with higher evening energy intake (p = 0.0009). In conclusion, our data show that a later chronotype among adolescents is associated with a shift of food consumption toward later times of the day. Hence, adolescents’ eating patterns appear to follow their internal clock rather than socially determined schedules.  相似文献

A newly isolated osmo-, salt-, and alkalitolerant Yarrowia lipolytica yeast strain is distinguished from other yeast species by its capacity to grow vigorously at alkaline pH values (9.7), which makes it a promising model organism for studying Na+-dependent phosphate transport systems in yeasts. Phosphate uptake by Y. lipolytica cells grown at pH 9.7 was mediated by several kinetically discrete Na+-dependent systems specifically activated by Na+. One of these, a low-affinity transporter, operated at high concentrations of extracellular phosphate. The other two, high-affinity systems, maximally active in phosphate-starved cells, were repressed or derepressed depending on the prevailing extracellular phosphate concentration and pH value. A distinct vertical zonation was observed among diatoms in a bottom congelation ice community at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica during the 1981 spring bloom. The bottom 20 cm of ice collected in December from four stations with variable snow cover was subdivided into 5 cm sections for analysis of algal distribution. Algal abundance was inversely related to the depth of snow cover, and generally decreased with increasing distance above the ice-water interface. Most diatoms, including the dominant species Nitzschia stellata Manguin, Amphiprora kufferathii Manguin and Fragilaria islandica var. adeliae Manguin showed peak abundance in the bottom 10 cm of the ice, where the proportion of living to empty cells was also highest. Two species, however, an Auricula Castracane sp. and Navicula glaciei van Heurck, reached highest concentrations at depths 10–20 cm above the ice-water interface. We considered two factors as contributing to the observed vertical zonation: (1) successive blooms at the ice-water interface become spatially stratified within the ice by further accretion below; (2) a differential growth of species occurs along physicochemical gradients within the ice column. A comparison of early versus late season profiles suggests the latter mechanism may prevail once ice accretion has ceased.  相似文献

The effect of the sinking rate, or rate of medium flow (φ) on the rate of phosphate incorporation (V) by the planktonic diatoms Thalassiosira fluviatilis Hust. and T. pseudonana Hasle & Heimdal in batch and chemostat cultures was determined by passing medium at defined flow rates (0.5–25.0 mm·min?1) over algae on membrane filters. At concentrations from 1 to 100 μg phosphorus·l?1 V, increases with increasing velocity of flow, approaching a maximum value (Vm) as described by the empirical relationship: where Kφ is the sinking rate value when V = 1/2 Vm+ Vo and Vo is the uptake at 0 rate of flow. By comparing uptake at controlled flow with uptake in a vigorously stirred medium, the phosphate concentration in the cell boundary layer can be determined. The sinking rate that reduces the phosphate concentration in the boundary layer to half of nominal concentration in the medium is much lower for the larger T. fluviatilis than for T. pseudonana. For both diatoms, it is inversely related to the nominal concentration.  相似文献

Daily variation in the number of slugs under and around 25 cm × 25 cm pad‐traps was recorded in plots of crop cultures. Grey field slugs Deroceras reticulatum and garden slugs (Arion distinctus and Arion hortensis) left traps at dusk and came back at the end of the night. The time of day at which the number of trapped slugs was maximal did not occur in the middle of the day, when slugs were inactive, but in the early morning and in the evening, a few hours before dusk. This was due to a rise in temperature under the traps in the middle of the day. A total of 81 taxa were observed from 30 soil samples taken from 5 different vegetation types in Northeast Greenland. Most of the dominant diatoms are well-known cosmopolitan aerophilic taxa; only Caloneis aerophila and Pinnularia lagerstedtii are less widespread species. The valve lengths of P. borealis and Hantzschia amphioxys are correlated with the moisture content of the soils. Average cell number/g dry weight of soil amounts to 1,120,000 ± 740,000. In a TWINSPAN classification, the soils of the different vegetation types are separated, with the exception of the Vaccinium soils, which are grouped partly with the Cassiope samples and partly with the Salix soils. In a CCA ordination diagram, the Navicula atomusFragilaria elliptica assemblage shows a positive correlation with organic content and pH and a negative one with permafrost depth. The Pinnularia divergentissima var. martiniiP. obscura assemblage is positively correlated with moisture. The Pinnularia lagerstedtiiCaloneis aerophila assemblage is positively correlated with permafrost depth and negatively with pH and moisture. Accepted: 27 November 1999  相似文献
