Wetlands have been intensively studied in the Czech Republic for more than 30 years, but the first full-scale constructed wetland (CW) for wastewater treatment was built in the Czech Republic in 1989. By the end of 1999, about 100 CWs were put in operation. The majority of the systems are horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) CWs and are designed for the secondary treatment of domestic or municipal wastewater. The size of CWs ranges between 18 and 4500 m2 and between 4 and 1100 population equivalent (PE). Most frequently used filtration media are gravel and crushed rock with size fractions of 4/8 and 8/16 mm and Phragmites australis is the most commonly used plant. The treatment efficiency is high in terms of BOD5 (88.0% for vegetated beds) and suspended solids (84.3% for vegetated beds). The removal of nutrients is lower for vegetated beds, and averages 51 and 41.6% for total phosphorus and total nitrogen, respectively.  相似文献

Treatment performance of horizontal flow (HF) and vertical flow (VF) constructed wetland planted with Rhynchospora corymbosa were compared. The average porosity of the CW beds were 0.55, hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3?days, hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and Organic Loading rate were 0.058?m/day and 3.96 (g·BOD/m2·day), respectively with a volumetric flow rate of 0.14 m3/day. The pollutant concentration of graywater before and after its introduction to the CWs was measured using standard sampling and analyses methods. The mean removal efficiencies (RE) for HF and VF CWs were BOD, 35% and 35.4%; COD, 61.9% and 56.7%; TN, 87% and 92%; TP, 95% and 65%; TSS, 86% and 59.6%; pH, 8.8% and 12.8%, respectively. The graywater was highly contaminated in terms of nutrient and organic load. The mean values of the parameters tested for different CWs were significantly different (P?≤?0.05). This comparative study favored HF over VF Constructed wetland with HF found to be a viable alternative for graywater treatment for organics, nutrients and suspended solids removal. This paper describes the development and operation of an Environmental Decision Support System (EDSS) to improve the operation and maintenance of horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (EDSS-maintenance). Constructed wetlands (CWs) allow wastewater treatment in a sustainable manner since they involve low energy consumption, low construction and functioning costs and low environmental impact. However, operation and maintenance activities are essential to guarantee reliability in CWs performance. The definition of operation and maintenance protocols depends on several quantitative and qualitative aspects such as wastewater treatment plant configuration, CW design, influent characteristics, sensitivity of the receiving media, etc. Bearing this in mind and considering the limited technical knowledge about CWs, the need for a new tool to support CW performance is clear. In this sense, EDSSs offer a new approach because they can tackle problems of complex and uncertain systems. The EDSS-maintenance provides operation and maintenance manuals specifically defined for every CW. To achieve it, the required knowledge was implemented within a rule-based system, which forms the backbone of the EDSS. Several features presented in this paper demonstrate how the EDSS-maintenance provides a proper platform to support the necessary collaborative work in the ecological engineering problem of horizontal subsurface flow CWs operation and maintenance.  相似文献

Common reed (Phragmites australis) and reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) are two most commonly used plant species in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment in the Czech Republic. Growth characteristics of both plants (biomass, stem count, and length) have been measured in 13 horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetlands since 1992. The results revealed that while Phalaris usually reaches its maximum biomass as early as during the second growing season, Phragmites usually reaches its maximum only after three to four growing seasons. The maximum biomass of both species varies widely among systems and the highest measured values (5070 g m−2 for Phragmites and 1900 g m−2 for Phalaris) are similar to those found in eutrophic natural stands. The shoot count of Phragmites decreases after the second growing season while length and weight of individual shoots increases over time due to self-thinning process. Number of Phalaris shoots is the highest during the second season and then the shoot count remains about the same. Also the shoot length remains steady over years of constructed wetland operation.  相似文献

Background:  Acquisition of Helicobacter pylori occurs mainly in childhood and is significantly influenced by geographical variations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori infection in a population-based sample of asymptomatic children in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, this study aims to identify potential risk factors associated with this infection.
Materials and Methods:  A prospective, cross-sectional, population-based study was undertaken in 1545 asymptomatic Czech children (aged 0–15 years; male 49.3%). Active H. pylori infection was diagnosed by monoclonal antibody-based antigen-in-stool enzyme immunoassay. Socio-demographic details of each subject were analyzed using a self-administered standardized questionnaire. Multiple regression analysis was performed.
Results:  Overall, 7.1% of asymptomatic children were diagnosed with H. pylori infection. Of the infected children, 5.8% lived in the general population. A positive association was found with increasing age, although not with gender. Independent risk factors associated with H. pylori infection in our pediatric population were: the number of children in a household (odds ratio [OR] 4.26; confidence interval [CI] 1.91–9.80); lack of formal education of fathers (OR 0.23; CI 0.18–0.64) and institutionalized children (OR 6.33; CI 2.25–26.50).
Conclusions:  This study of a large cohort of children demonstrated that, independent of gender, H. pylori infection in the Czech Republic is among the lowest reported in Europe. Socioeconomically disadvantaged children, unfortunately, are still at risk of harboring this potentially preventable infection in this low-prevalence region.  相似文献

The effect of hydraulic loading rate (HLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the bioremediation of municipal wastewater using a pilot scale subsurface horizontal flow constructed treatment wetland (HFCTW) vegetated with Cyprus papyrus was investigated. Different HLRs were applied to the treatment system namely 0.18, 0.10, and 0.07 m3/m2. d with corresponding HRTs of 1.8, 3.2, and 4.7 days, respectively. The flow rate was 8 m3/d, and the average organic loading rate (OLR) was 0.037 kg BOD/m3/d. Results showed that the performance of the HFCTW was linearly affected by decreasing the HLR and increasing the HRT. The highest treatment efficiency was achieved at HRT (4.7 days) and HLR (0.07 m3/m2. d). The percentage reductions of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS) were 86%, 87%, and 80%, respectively. Satisfactory nutrient removal was obtained. Also, removal of 2–3 logs of bacterial indicators of pollution was achieved. The dry biomass of Cyperus was 7.7 kg/m2 and proved to be very efficient in nitrification processes due to high diversity of the roots that increase the treatment surface area.  相似文献

The Ahníkov (Miocene, Czech Republic) site represents a concentration of vertebrate skeletal remains in a swamp setting. Autochthonous bone deposits were strongly altered by sedimentary processes and early diagenesis. Biting and gnawing traces recognized on hard animal tissues (bones, teeth, antlers, turtle thoraces) represent seven recurring morphotypes. The following ichnotaxa are erected: Nihilichnus nihilicus n. igen. et n. isp., Nihilichnus mortalis n. isp., Machichnus regularis n. igen. et n. isp., Machichnus multilineatus n. isp., Machichnus bohemicus n. isp., and Brutalichnus brutalis n. igen. et n. isp. Each kind of bones or similar substrates bears a specific proportion of various bite traces but no observed morphotype is specific for a single substrate. Ethologically, traces of sharpening of teeth are principally different from predation traces. The beavers Steneofiber eseri and Steneofiber depereti, the carnivore Amphicyon sp. and the crocodiles are presumed as the tracemakers.  相似文献
